• Rough measure: mark the
number of widths around
each wall of the room;
three marks = one roll of paper.
• Accurate measure: area of all
walls minus area of any windows,
doors, etc.
• Work out your starting point.
• Use a plumb line to give a perfect vertical line.
How much should you allow for wastage?
Before you start

Adhesives come ready-mixed or in powder form.
• Ready-mixed have low moisture content, and
contain PVA.
• Powder form can be starch-based (medium
moisture) or cellulose-based (high moisture).
Some wall coverings, such as Lincrusta, need
specific adhesives.

Pasting
To paste with a brush:
• place length reverse side upwards
• make a short overlap aligned with
furthest edge from you
• apply paste down centre
• keep applying from centre to
furthest edge
• move length to nearest edge of
pasteboard and continue, from centre to
edge.

Folding techniques

• Choose starting point.
• Take the first length up to the
plumb line, and slide into
place.
• Smooth paper down with
brush, from centre to edges.
• Fold down bottom fold and
apply as before.

Papering vertically

• Choose starting point.
• Measure positions and
check with spirit level.
• Line up first length
horizontally, then
second length.
• Repeat on each wall,
always starting with a
plumbed mark.
Cross-lining

Papering a ceiling
• Choose starting point and make
plumb chalk line to work from.
• Use a concertina fold.
• Allow 20 mm overlap at wall edge.
• Rest spare folds on a decorator’s
crutch.
• Apply first fold fully, then open one more
fold, and so on.
• Line up first length to one side, then second length.
• Repeat on each wall, always starting with a plumbed mark.
Why should you work away from any light source?

• Hang paper on one side of the
window.
• Hang above window.
• Hang below window.
• Patch the underside of the
reveal in the corner.

If the wallpaper has a set pattern
and the pattern match is
horizontally set, the first length
of wallpaper should be placed in
the centre of the chimney breast
to create a balanced effect.
