'Bad' Painting and the work of Anton HenningJames Clegg
This lecture users the theme of taste to explore the subject of postmodernism, building to a consideration of 'Bad' Painting and the work of German artist Anton Henning. By James Clegg
Postmodernism is a late 20th century movement that departed from modernism, including culture, literature, art, philosophy and other fields. It reacted against tendencies in modernism and is typically marked by a revival of historical elements and techniques. Postmodernism questions absolute truth, views truth and error as the same, and sees traditional authority as false and corrupt while morality is personal. It is increasingly an art of symbolism and gesture alone.
From Object to concept: environment, performance, and installation artDeborahJ
This document provides an overview of postmodern art movements that emerged in response to modernism, including minimalism, conceptual art, performance art, body art, earthworks, and installation art. It discusses how these genres emphasized ideas over visual forms, incorporated elements of theatre and audience participation, and challenged definitions of art. Key artists mentioned include Robert Morris, Joseph Kosuth, Vito Acconci, Chris Burden, Richard Serra, Michael Heizer, Robert Smithson, and Bruce Nauman. It also summarizes Michael Fried's criticism of minimalism and Rosalind Krauss' theory of sculpture's "expanded field."
The document summarizes key buildings representing different architectural styles in Berlin, Germany from the early 20th century to postmodernism. It describes the A.E.G. High Tension Factory as an early example of modern style that gave "architectural dignity" to industry. It also discusses the Hackesche Höfe as an example of Jugendstil/Art Nouveau that combined residential and commercial spaces. Additionally, it provides details on the Bauhaus school founded by Walter Gropius and influential modernist buildings like Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie and Le Corbusier's Unité d'Habitation in Marseille.

Post-Modernism is an art style that emerged in the late 20th century as a departure from modernism. It is characterized by a mix of different art forms, bright colors, irregular shapes with few straight lines, and a twist on conventional design. Rather than logical rational thinking, postmodernism embraces irrational thinking and combines or imitates old art forms. It questions the idea that art must present new ideas or art forms.
Postmodern architecture emerged in the late 1970s as a response to the perceived inadequacies of modernism. It incorporated eclectic design elements, ornamentation, and references to historical architectural styles that had been rejected by modernism. Notable postmodernist architects included Robert Venturi, Charles Moore, Philip Johnson, and Hafiz Contractor. They reintroduced decorative elements like colors, columns, and ornamentation to building facades. Postmodernism also emphasized context, symbolism, and playful references over the functionalism and minimalism of modern architecture.

Postmodernism in architecture emerged in the 1950s-1970s as a rejection of modernism's strict formalism and functionalism. It emphasized ornamentation, contextuality, and eclecticism by incorporating historical elements and references. Some key characteristics included hybridity, contradiction, ambiguity, and inclusion of historical styles. Prominent postmodern architects included Robert Venturi, Philip Johnson, Charles Moore, and Michael Graves, whose works featured classical references and symbolic ornamentation. Postmodernism remains influential today through its emphasis on diversity and contextual design.
Postmodernism emerged in the late 20th century as a departure from modernism in the arts, architecture, and criticism. It is characterized by combining different styles and media rather than pursuing a single pure form, and is skeptical of overarching theories. In architecture, postmodernism rejects the notion of perfect form, instead drawing openly from all available methods and materials. The Sony Building in New York is an example, topping a boxy office tower with a classical broken pediment not typically seen in modern architecture.
The document discusses postmodern architect Robert Venturi and his criticism of Mies van der Rohe's modernist motto "Less is more". It describes Venturi's mother's house in Philadelphia from 1962, which featured ornamental details, and his Guild House from 1966 that included an antenna, challenging the simplicity of modernism. The document examines Venturi's rejection of the Miesian principle "Less is more" with his counter-phrase "Less is a bore" and how his buildings incorporated ornamentation and symbolic elements.
Philip Johnson was an American architect born in 1906 who is known for introducing the International Style of modern architecture to the United States. He began his career focusing on the stark glass and steel styles of Mies van der Rohe but later incorporated more ornamental historical elements. Johnson had a significant influence through his pioneering use of glass in buildings, experimenting with all-glass facades in projects like the AT&T Building, now the Sony Tower. He believed architecture was about organizing interior space and designed notable buildings like the Crystal Cathedral featuring dramatic glass structures.
Postmodernism emerged as an architectural movement in the late 1970s that rejected modernism's focus on newness and avant-garde styles, instead incorporating classical elements from the past alongside modern utility. Examples cited include Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum from 1997, Michael Graves' Portland Building from the 1980s, and Philip Johnson's Sony Building in New York City, which combined classical forms with contemporary design.
Postmodern architecture emerged in the late 1970s as a rejection of the strict functionalism of modernism. It is characterized by (1) a return to decorative ornamentation and references to historical architectural styles, (2) a emphasis on contextualism and addressing the materials and forms of surrounding buildings, and (3) a rejection of modernism's doctrine that "less is more." Influential postmodern architects like Robert Venturi, Philip Johnson, and Michael Graves designed buildings that incorporated historical references and ornamentation in new ways.
13 propositions of Post-Modernism by Charles JencksAnshuman Mishra
This presentation contains the 13 propositions that Charles Jencks had prepared, as a summary, to introduce his students at UCLA, to the topic of Post-Modernism. The Slides were prepared by-Shanya Gupta, Nitin Sahu, Anshuman Abhisek Mishra : 4th sem B. Arch students at SPA, Bhopal.
Postmodernism emerged after World War II as a rejection of absolute truths and universal values. It emphasizes individual interpretations of reality and sees knowledge as culturally constructed rather than objectively determined. Postmodernism is reflected in popular culture through commodified cultural products that people consume to construct their social identities.

This document provides a summary of research on the topic of language and identity in Algeria. It discusses three main points:
1. Language plays a key role in shaping cultural and national identity. The Arabic language connects Algerians to their shared history and culture, while French remains influential due to the colonial past.
2. Younger generations are shifting towards a bilingual or multilingual identity, comfortable navigating both Arabic and French. However, tensions remain as some see French as a threat to preserving Arabic.
3. Scholars debate whether Algeria should promote a monolingual Arabic-based identity or a pluralistic bilingual/multilingual identity. Both perspectives have merits, and the debate influences language policies in education
