Spoiled, but Not a Brat
Diquan Lamar Hubbard Introduction to College Writing Professor Sophie Bradford October 19,
2012 Spoiled, but not a Brat The ideal spoiled child does not come to mind easily. I observed people
around campus, but I think one of the perfect examples of a spoiled child is Angelica Pickles from
the popular Nickelodeon show Rugrats. Angelica showed characteristics that made her stand out as
an antagonist. She would refer to the other characters as "dumb babies." Angelica would show how
selfish she was by convincing the other characters to do plans that would only benefit her, which set
her up most of the time as the antagonist in each episode. She would receive gifts to her heart's
desire and not be the least bit thankful. Her parents set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because, she came to school in Camaros and Corvettes, other students assumed that she was going
to be brat. I worked with her in Student Council, a club that makes decisions for the school and does
community service, for three years. I have seen, just by working with her how hard she works. She
is constantly being taught things from her father that will make her into a well off college student.
She explained that she had to do the same things as most other normal kids and that she got this
philosophy from her father who did not start out as an oil tycoon, but worked his way up. I have also
seen a counter example in a people that may not be rich, but they were brats. I was in program called
Upward Bound, while I was in high school. Upward Bound was created for at–risk teens that may
not have come from the wealthiest of homes and they are usually first–generation college students.
While I was in Upward Bound it was common to see people with nice things, but they had worked
for them. They wore expensive clothes; they had all kinds of expensive technology like MacBook's
and iPads. A lot of them worked too and they would off–set the cost of a lot of their things. There
were some that didn't; that acted like they deserved to have things given to them just for being
present. In Upward Bound they would help us by giving us checks for our mileage and gifts all of
the time. There were some people who were just ungrateful for what they were

Children Are Becoming Extremely Spoiled
Children are being babied way too much. Children are becoming extremely spoiled; to the point of
no return. An end needs to be put to this before an inevitable catastrophe occurs! If ever given the
chance, it is quite frightening to think about where this generations kids will stand a few years from
now, is it not? Something needs to be done.
Our world cannot afford more spoiled children. "A spoiled child is undisciplined, manipulative, and
unpleasant to be with much of the time" (Schmitt). With the way our society is now, kids are
becoming very spoiled which is forming them to be narcissistic children. Do we really want more
people like Donald Trump? For goodness sake, the man believes a loan of one million dollars to be
small! Is that what we want? Well if parenting continues the way it is, that's what society will get.
Spoiling will form youngsters into becoming selfish little pampered brats, and pampered children
are problematic for parents; as well as for future children, adults, or others they will encounter along
the path of their everyday lives in the future. "Spoiled children run into trouble by the time they
reach school age. Other children do not like them because they are too bossy and selfish. Adults do
not like them because they are rude and make excessive demands. Eventually spoiled children
become hard for even parents to love because of their behavior" (Schmitt). This is why it is crucial
for our society to make future parents aware of the need of parenting

Corporate Governance is the relationship between the shareholders, directors, and management of a

Boardrooms are changing. Directors can no longer be passive. They must be alert, accountable and
active. The board's performance has come under more scrutiny. Shareholders, members and staff
expect more from their boards.
Individual directors of the corporate governance board should possess all of the
following characteristics:
Integrity and Accountability
Informed Judgment
Financial Literacy
Mature Confidence
High Performance
Passion
The board as a whole should possess the following core competencies, with each
member contributing knowledge, experience and skills in one or more domains.
Accounting and Finance
Business Judgment
Management
Crisis Response
Industry Knowledge
International Markets
Strategy & Vision
Companies are becoming more involved with corporate governance and they are following more
strict rules and guidelines. One major problem is how board members are being elected. Avoid
employees for the company seems to be one way to eliminate poor corporate governance
committees. They have to try to keep the chief executive officers from loading the board with
friendly directors that are close to them. The most difficult change will be electing board members.

The Removalists Essay
Australian dramas, such as David Williamson's "The Removalists", inclination to depend on
stereotypes is not a weakness, but instead an opportunity to explore personal and societal issues. The
inclusion of stereotypes within the play does not hinder the exploration of these issues, but instead
deepens the audiences understanding and awareness. Through familiar roles, such as the 'Oker'
identity, Williamson heightens the play, and allows a production to focus on the themes being
explored. By using stereotyped characters in contrast with realistic characters and style, Williamson
effectively comment on the faults of society without the distraction of character complexity.
The Oker character is used by Williamson as a tool to allow the ... Show more content on

In this scene we tended to speak loudly, often finding ourselves shouting and making rude
innuendos and racist comments. As we workshopped the scene further, we discussed how this was a
representation of the Australian society that we had seen in the media. It could be concluded from
my workshop, that in a production of The Removalists this familiarity of character was an
opportunity, as it allows the faults within the stereotype to dominate.
As well as emphasise on the faults within the stereotype, the use of recognisable characters in a
production of The Removalists allows for an effective comment on the faults within Australian
society. Through the use of stereotyped characters, the play provides a deeper insight into the serious
personal and societal issues within the Australian community, without the distraction of character
complexity. These themes, which are explored through stereotypes, are violence, abuse of authority,
and sexism and sexuality.
The underlying messages that Australia is an inherently violent society, and that the Australian male
uses violence to resolve their problems is shown in The Removalists through the Oker identity of
Simmonds and Kenny. Stereotypes creating deeper understanding of the themes when staging this
production are presented immediately by Kenny's recognisable personality, which allows the
audience to easily accept that Kenny would abuse his wife

Several firms are focusing on the voting and nominating procedure as one way to improve corporate
governance. The new Nasdaq rule is another way they are looking to improve corporate governance
in the future. According to this rule corporation have to get there act together and buckle down and

two years to make all the appropriate changes or take a chance of getting removed from the NYSE

it will bring a lot of public attention on the companies that are acting according. This attention may
give investors a negative reaction on the company and they may slowly start pulling away from the

happening with the company weather its conflict of interest or other corporate abuse. They also
believe it will give investors more confidence in the companies that they invest their money in.
The new rule should prevent a bad company from showing dishonest behavior. Many agree that

Stock Characters In Tartuffe
A minor character contributes heavily in a play, particularly by revealing information or giving
additional insight about major characters. Tartuffe, by Molière, is a French satire which is over
exaggerated and critical towards the upper class. It also ridicules hypocrisy and the upper class.
Molière's unique choice of using stock characters contributes to the technical development of the
work. Specifically, Dorine holds the role of the Zanni, the servant who provides comedic relief.
Madame Pernelle fits the category of the Pantalone because despite being a woman, she is wealthy
and an upperclassman, meaning she's at the top of the social pyramid. Orgon fits into the category of
the Dottore, as he is the head of the household and also at the top of the social pyramid. While,
Tartuffe is a hypocritical character identified as the Capitano of the play. He convinces Orgon and
Madame Pernelle that he is a devoutly pious and humble man, but behind his facade he is an ...

Without her, the motif of the truth about Tartuffe would not be revealed. Dorine is the person who
expresses through satire much of the exasperation the audience feels. From the beginning of the
play, we become acquainted with the truth about Tartuffe being a hypocrite, through Dorine. In Act
I, Scene I Dorine says, "if anyone were to listen to him and believe in his maxims, one could not do
anything without committing a sin; for he controls everything, this carping critic". Through
dialogue, Dorine exposes Tartuffe to the audience. This affects our perception of Tartuffe, we
become aware of who Tartuffe really is and what his natural character is like. Dorine not being in
the play would minimize this opportunity for us as an audience. Dorine plays a very significant role
in Tartuffe; if she wasn't a part of the play, the audience would have a harder time navigating the
motif of truth within

Fedex Corp. vs United Parcel Service, Inc Case Study
I. Executive Summary
In this report we focus on the two main competitors in the package delivery industry: Federal
Express Corporation (FedEx) and United Parcel Service of America, Inc.
Studying FedEx, UPS and their competitive relationship in the decade from mid – 80's to mid – 90's
gives a good insight for the companies' and industry's future. The two companies have different
strategic goals and are operating in the same industry but in different main markets: FedEx is
working on "producing outstanding financial returns" and focuses on the overnight air market while
UPS is looking for "earning reasonable profit" and its core business is the two–day ground delivery.

In addition to that, FedEx came up with new services such as Saturday deliveries, delivery by 10:30
A.M., customer interfaces (drop boxes, drive through stations and express delivery stores) and same
day pickup of order. This is to distinguish its services. More on that, FedEx's philosophy of "People–
Service–Profit" was successful in insuring a union free workforce devoted to customer focus. In
1978, deregulation in transportation helped FedEx to acquire larger planes therefore achieve lower
cost. Trade deregulation in Asia–Pacific enabled FedEx to expand further. The acquisition of Gelco
express, Tiger International, and establishment of Airport Hub in Brussels expanded FedEx
internationally. Inflation and rising global competitiveness generated the need for "just–in–time"
supply model, which was the advantage supported by FedEx advanced technologies.
Some inhibiting factors were the competition that has heavily evolved as a number of competitors
(e.g. Emery, USPS, and UPS) entered the overnight delivery market as well as imitate other FedEx
new services. More on that, they were able to acquire similar IT solutions with lower costs and as a
result presented these services with cheaper prices. Moreover, in the attempt to expand
internationally, some acquisitions were over–priced and revealed insufficient market studying.
Europe low demand that resulted in the shutting down of Brussels hub as well as Tiger international
operations caused a loss of $1 billion

With regards to short term solvency Microline appears to be strong. Their current ratio rose from .94
in 2010 to 1.27 in 2011. Their quick ratio also rose from .52 in 2010 to .75 in 2011. The catalyst to
this increase comes mainly from an increase in assets and not a decrease in liabilities. A potential
reason for this increase could be due to the fact that Microline signed a ten year note with a debt
covenant stating that the company needed to maintain a current ratio of 1or the note will mature.
This could have led the company to increase their account receivables and inventory in order to
bump up their assets to meet the debt covenant. There interest coverage increased from 2010 to 2011
from 3.8 in 2010 to 5.75 in 2011. This shows an increase in solvency where the firm can cover the
interest on it loans 5.75 times. However, their solvency in terms of interest coverage comes into
question as their short term equities account for $2500 which is not a reflection of consistent cash
flow generated from sales. Without the presence of short term equities Microlines interest coverage
actually falls from 3.8 in 2010 to 3.25 in 2011.
The long term solvency of Microline in is question as the company recently issued a long term note
and reclassified a short term note to long term which accounted for $7000. The direct result of this
shows an increase in the total debt from 47% in

In 1997, Dunlap fired thousands of employees, shut down factories and warehouses, and streamlined
the company by eliminating products and selling businesses unrelated to its core products. He

Revolutionary Archetype
In both literature and the waking world, the idea of a revolutionary figure has always been one of
wonder and intrigue. It is no coincidence that authors continuously weave revolutionary characters
into their stories to both entice readers and give them a sense of realism. The revolutionary
archetype duplicated throughout fiction is seen as a morally good character openly opposing the
current state of affairs despite the action being against the known laws, this character type is also
often forced to sacrifice something for their cause. Diana Farley from The Red Queen Series by
Victoria Aveyard, Manon Blackbeak from the Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J. Maas, and Linh

when she learns of her heritage and ability to resist the influential powers of their Lunar enemies,
"Checking her gloves, Cinder cast a look toward the road that would take her away from the palace,
back to the safety of being an invisible girl in a very big city. Releasing a slow breath, she turned
and followed the android." (Meyer, Cinder 58) Cinder truly blossoms into her revolutionary
archetype when it is confirmed that she is the lost princess and true heir to the throne, while she is
hesitant to cast away her own dreams of freedom, she knows that they must be sacrificed for the
greater good of all of humanity, "Cinder had no desire to be queen. She didn't want to be a princess
or an heir to anything. All her life–at least, all the life she could remember–all she'd ever wanted was
freedom." (Meyer, Cinder 19) Her ability to cast away her hopes and dreams and become a beacon
of light for the oppressed Lunar people is consistent with Meyer's theme of standing up for what is
right no matter what the cost, "I understand that I am asking you to risk your lives. Levana's

Risk And Return Analysis : Risk
Risk and Return Analysis
Risk has a role in individual's lives around the world and that role can be influenced by an
individual's character and their daily life. Risk and return is affected by time when investing occurs.
Time relates to the amount of time in the market which offers the highest chance of returns. The
investment time frame will determine the amount of impact that investors will see, investment
choices includes stocks and bonds (Kinicki, Cornett, Adair, Nofsinger, 2016).
Risk is when there is an opportunity for a return on an investment that will be not the same as
anticipated. When investing in an investment instrument, there are risks and the level of risk differs
contingent on specific investment, the source of risk also is subject to the investment. The economy
can be a change where the investments can be changed and can drastically increase or decrease.
Investment returns is the total amount that can be earned or lost in any investment. Risk and return
are essentially connected. The relationship between risk and return is the higher the risk there is a
possibility of a larger return. The relationship of risk and return is by quantities of investment.
Between the higher risk and the lower risk is a return that rises with an increase in risk. The high
potential for returns is when there is lower risk (Kinicki, Cornett, Adair, Nofsinger, 2016).

investment company, Stratton Oakmont. His memoir is the basis for the 2013 Martin Scorsese film
The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo Dicapro.
Born in Queens, New York, on July 9, 1962, Jordan Belfort had a natural talent as a salesman at an
early age, operating a meat and seafood business in the 1980s. After that company went bust, Belfort
began selling stocks in 1987. He was running his own investment operation, Stratton Oakmont, by
1989. The company made millions illegally, defrauding its investors. The Securities Exchange
Commission began efforts to stop the company's errant ways in 1992. In 1999, ... Show more

Life After Prison
In 2008, Jodran Belfort published his memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, using one of his nicknames
as the title. The book explored his meteoric rise and explosive crash in the financial world. The
following year, Belfort released a second memoir, Catching the Wolf of Wall Street, which detailed
his life after his arrest. In 2013, a film adaptation of The Wolf of Wall Street, directed by Martin
Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort, hit the big screen.
These days, Belfort lives in Los Angeles, California, to be close to his two children, Chandler and
Carter, from his second marriage. He now operates his own company, which provides sales training
and markets Straight Line training programs aimed at building wealth. Belfort claims to have
straightened up his act. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he explained, "I'm a wolf who became a
more benevolent character." Belfort has reportedly paid $14 million of the $110 million fine against
him.
JORDAN BELFORT Considered as a Leader
JORDAN BELFORT was a born entrepreneur. When he was eight years old he had a newspaper
round where he was knocking on people's door and making money and building that up and then he
sold that when he was 10. When he was 12 years old he was shovelling snow in driveways and
making 20 bucks per person – they had a lot of snow in the winter and he made a few hundred bucks
out of that.
When he was 16 he hit it big for the first

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Wolf Of Wall Street '
Ethics and Wall Street The Movie that I choose to analyze was the movie The Wolf of Wall Street
this movie is about a guy who is starting off his career wanting to earn money fast so he goes to
Wall Street and works as a broker for a small firm, where he ends up picking up bad advice along
with some bad habits that get him rich fast, but not in a very ethical way. Some of the main
characters that I will be talking about in this essay are Jordan Belfort also referred to as Jordy, he is
played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Donnie Azoff Played by Jonah Hill. There are many other characters
in this movie, but these are the main characters that are faced with difficult dilemmas. A lot of the
choices that are made in this movie are Unethical. Even though it seems that he does everything for
greed you end up understanding the reasons he did those things, but even though they are done for
the right reasons does not mean it is right. The Character that faced with the most dilemmas is
Jordan Belfort. One of the Dilemmas that he is faced with in this movie is when the stock market
crashes on the day that he received his broker license. He loses his Job and has to be a difficult
decision between getting a temporary job in retail or work for a small investment firm with little to
no regulations selling penny stocks. Because of the fact that he is good at selling stocks he ends up
working for the small investment firm. Here he is faced with many difficult decisions and one of
these is to sell

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum : Film...
During the end of the 3rd Century, the Playwright Plautus wrote many of the first Roman comedies.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is a musical comedy film adaptation of Plautus's
comedies.Set in ancient Rome, many aspects of Roman theatre, including stock characters, were
included in the film's production. While the film is based off of multiple comedies, Plautus's
Pseudolus character Calidorus is nearly identical to the film's Hero. During the time Pseudolus was
written, the Crisis of the Third Century led to up to 25% of Roman population being comprised of
slaves(Southern). Of the many stock characters Platus included in his comedies, Calidorus/Hero, the
son of Pseudolus's owner and the stock character adulescens, best ... Show more content on

Although their scheme with Pseudolus takes vastly different measures to achieve their goal, the
behavior and attitudes of Calidorus and Hero are practically identical. Both characters possess such
an intense love that it could be described as torturous, have absolute trust in Pseudolus's advice, and
achieve their goals through deception. Finally, both Calidorus and Hero are depicted similarly; both
being of young adult age and sons to wealthy a father. Homologous to the stock characters first used
in ancient Rome, the "innocent" character type, usually cast as one of the main protagonists or their
close friend, is commonly found in modern American comedy. The innocent character is always
portrayed as being naive, trustworthy, lacking inherently negative qualities, and usually lacking
common sense in some sphere of his or her life. Just as Roman stock characters are, the innocent is
recognizable from many literary and visual works, and is distinguished by a recognizable clichés
often subject to criticism and parody. While Roman stock characters are still utilized today, however
the innocent is a much more commonly utilized character type than many of the stock characters
originating from Roman theatre. In the contemporary animated comedy Rick and Morty, Morty
embodies the role of the innocent entirely. Grandson to the smartest man in the universe Rick

Sally Jameson Case
TEACHING NOTE
Sally Jameson: Valuing Stock Options in a Compensation Package (Abridged)
Objectives
This case has two educational objectives. First, it serves as an introductory case on option valuation
in which students can use market data to place a dollar value on an option they are likely to
encounter in their business careers. As such, the case encourages a discussion of the application of
option pricing models, such as Black–Scholes, and exposes students to popular misconceptions of
how options should be valued. Second, the case permits a discussion of the wisdom and efficacy of
incentive stock compensation plans using options.
Synopsis
This case details a thinly disguised situation faced by a recent Harvard MBA graduate ... Show more

The case suggests to students that they first attempt to value the option assuming that Ms. Jameson
expects to stay at Telstar for the full five years needed to vest, and ignoring taxes and the lack of
tradability of the option grant. The grant gives Ms. Jameson a European call on a non–dividend
paying common stock currently selling at $18.75, with an exercise price of $35.00, and a maturity of
five years. (In practice, this type of option would be structured so as to vest over the five–year
interval, and exercisable over a window from perhaps five to ten years from the date of grant.) The
student has to choose between a cash grant of $5000 or 3,000 out–of–the–money calls. Students '
first impressions will likely be similar to those of the executives quoted in the supplementary The
Wall Street Journal article: "Out–of–the–money options are worthless." However, given the
volatility of Telstar common stock, their analysis should convince them that these options are far
from worthless.1 To value this European call, students need to assess the likely volatility of Telstar
common stock, and they have both data that can be used to calculate the historical volatility (Exhibit
3) as well as all of the options quoted on Telstar (Exhibit 1). Instructors can use the case to discuss
the mechanics of working through Black–Scholes (e.g., how to back out

Australian Business Media Reported That The Board Of...
I. Introduction In the August 2015, most of the Australian business media reported that the board of
Federation Centre ("FDC") sacked Steven Sewell as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and then
replaced him with Angus McNaughton as a new CEO. This removal subsequently surprised
investors and markets because it occurred just two months after the completion of the merger
between FDC and Novion Property Group ("Novion"). Moreover, there is no further explanation
from the board of FDC about the reason of removal Steven Sewell. Consequently, the shares of the
FDC declined 6% since the replacement. The removal of a director by the board in the FDC case
creates legal and ethical issues, which ultimately led to the onset of commercial issues. Despite the
legal, ethical and commercial issues, this case is strongly indicated that there are some problems in
the mechanism of removal directors stipulated in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) ("Corporations
Act") S 203D and S 203E. This indication is underpinned by some cases in the Australian court in
which directors are removed also by the board. Therefore, this paper will analyse the legal, ethical
and commercial issues regarding with the removal of FDC's director, discuss the problem in the
procedure of removal directors stipulated in the legislation, and compare other regulations in the
common law and civil law countries. Finally, drafts of new mechanism of dismissal directors will be
provided in this research to reform Section 203D

Chief among the many factors was a dramatic change in the ability to create new lines of credit,
which dried up the flow of money and slowed new economic growth and the buying and selling of
assets. There were other factors as well, including the cheap credit which made it too easy for people
to buy houses or make other investments based on pure speculation. Cheap credit created more
money in the system and people wanted to spend that money. The housing market decline also
caused a chain reaction in the economy. Individuals and investors could no longer sell their homes

Friends Stock Character
For paper five, I plan to write my essay about the television show Friends. More specifically, why
this show is still one of the most popular on TV even though the series finale aired 13 years ago. I
think that this show has maintained its popularity due to the nostalgia it invokes, its use of stock
characters, the empathy that viewers feel for the characters, and its ability to stand out amongst the
massive amount of sitcoms that take place in New York City.
One of the main reasons Friends is such a popular TV show is through its capability to transport the
viewer to a different era. Everything about Friends is so overwhelmingly 90's, from the hair and

altered. My fourth source is about the importance of location in TV shows. More specifically, it
discusses how the setting of television shows isn't that important, what matters is that the show has
the ability to transport you into the world of the characters. It also says that when TV shows do this,
the viewer gets much more attached to the show. I plan to use this source to demonstrate that by

The Importance Of Stock Characters In Sense And...
Jane Austen's first book to be published was Sense and Sensibility. Austen's story depicts the life of
a family who loses everything because of the death of their father. The father's wealth goes to his
son, John Dashwood. Mr. Dashwood doesn't help his sisters because his wife, Fannie, doesn't think
it's a good idea. When all hope is lost, Edward Ferrars enters the story and takes an interest in the
eldest daughter, Elinor. Throughout this story, Austen introduces many characters, some of which
have minor roles. Margaret Dashwood, Lucy Steele, and Mrs. Jennings are a few of the characters
that partake in minor roles, but have a huge importance to the plot. A minor character tends to bring
out traits in other characters. Margaret Dashwood is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jennings, Lucy Steele is another important character in the story. Lucy let's Elinor know that she has
been engaged to Edward Ferrars for five years. This creates internal struggles with Elinor because
she had loved Edward. Lucy, Elinor, Marianne, Charlotte, and Mrs. Jennings all go to London for a
trip right after Elinor learns of Lucy's engagement. Marianne is hoping to meet John Willoughby for
an explanation and Lucy and Elinor are hoping to see Edward. While in London, Lucy meets Robert
Ferrars whom she finds to be an exceptional gentleman. Lucy and Robert end up marrying which
frees up Edward for Elinor. If Lucy hadn't been a part in the story she would not have been able to
meet Robert, making Edward and Lucy engaged. Lucy had a very important role in the plot.
Einstein's butterfly theory shows how one little thing can change the outcome of something
completely. If anything had changed in Austen's story nothing would be the same. Each minor
character that is included has a purpose to her story and they are all important. If one character is
taken out then there wouldn't be as much insight to the other characters and there would be drastic
changes to the original plot. Austen does a great job at controlling her characters to give each one

DERIVATIVE is a transaction or contract whose value depends on or, as the name implies, derives
from the value of underlying assets such as stock, bonds, mortgages, market indices, or foreign

The Merger Is A Final Reorganization Essay
1. The merger is a qualifying reorganization. It is a forward triangular merger, §368(a)(2)(D),
because the parent (ODI) created a subsidiary (Atlantic) with the contribution of its stock (the ODI
Nonvoting Preferred Stock), and then the target (CPI) merges into the subsidiary (Atlantic). CPI's
shareholders will receive the nonvoting preferred stock of ODI, and CPI will disappear. The
requirements necessary under §368(a)(2)(D) is that the subsidiary acquires substantially all of the
target's assets, which will be 90% of net and 70% of gross. This does occur because Atlantic
acquires all of CPI's assets and liabilities. Typically, stripping off a target's assets are prohibited, but
in this case the subsidiary is acquiring the cash received from the sale of the tools division. Another
requirement is that the target's shareholders only receive stock of the parent and not the subsidiary,
and in this case, the stock transferred to CPI's shareholders are all ODI's stock. Another requirement
is that the target is merged into the subsidiary, which does occur; CPI merges into Atlantic and
Atlantic survives. The final requirements are the judicial authority requirements. There is a
continuity of shareholder's interest test, just like required in a type "A" merger. Even though not all
three shareholders of CPI receive shares of ODI, Harry's and Teresa's ownership is greater than 50%
of CPI. Harry owns 60% (300/500) of CPI and Teresa owns 22% (110/500) of CPI. It also meets the

Joint-Stock Company: Colonization In The 1600s
joint–stock company
Joint–stock companies provided money for colonization in the 1600's. A joint–stock company was
formed by a number of individuals who each contributed various amounts of money in exchange for
a certain amount of shares. Joint–stock companies established the first profitable colonies. charter A
charter is written authorization that gives an organization permission to do business. The London
Company and the Plymouth Company asked King James I to allow them to create a joint–stock
company to establish colonies. The king allowed them to do so by issuing a charter. The charter was
similar to a constitution for the colony and allowed the two companies to settle on the east coast of
America and control trade. It allowed the London Company to colonize the land from the Potomac
south to South Carolina, and the Plymouth company to colonize land between Maine and New York.
It also stated that colonists were allowed the same powers that the English people had.

Stereotypes In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
Stereotypes exist everywhere, individuals stereotype others as well as themselves. Stereotypes
function in society as a perceived notion of a group of individuals based upon prior experience from
a select few people from aforementioned group. Stereotypes exist within literature as well;
stereotypes can be used to help personify individuals and make the best stock characters. The
stereotype of a character can be used to better exemplify what people may or may not be really like.
In The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, Sinclair stereotypes immigrants to show their initial optimism,
ignorance and finally– the realization of what life is really like.
Immigrants or foreigners are usually shown as being optimistic about coming to a new land,
especially with "living the American Dream". Jurgis is telling others "That is well enough for men
like you," he would say, "silpnas, puny fellows–but my back is broad"(page 20). Jurgis is optimistic
that it would not hurt him, if he were to be beaten, but he is also a young individual with a lack of
true work. Like many others that were coming over to the United States during the time period, their
perceived notion of how work is in the United States is not the same as what is concurrently
occurring. Sinclair uses that opportunity to show how confident Jurgis is feeling about his working
ability and because he worked in Lithuania, it must be the same. Sinclair also uses a group of
foreigners being exposed to new experiences and sights. The

Stock Characters In Roman Comedy
In Roman comedy, the use of stock characters helped to represent common archetypes in society.
Stock characters were also used to allow for audiences to easily understand a production, as the
characters were so commonly seen. In modern movies and specifically American comedy,
stereotypical characters are often used that demonstrate society's beliefs about certain types of
people. These characters are often used satirically to mock the stereotypes that lead people to judge
others. Regardless of when stock characters are utilized, they point to the ideas that a society has
about certain types of people during a specific time period. The stock character of the leno, or
brothel–keeper or pimp, is a character that many, if not all, Romans would have immediately
recognized. The leno is represented in Plautus' Pseudolus by a character named Ballio. He owns the
love interest of Calidorus, master of Pseudolus, and is known for his greed and physical harshness
towards his slaves. He is seen in the play constantly beating his slaves, and he calls them names
such as "whip–spoilers" (139), which indicates that Ballio beats them so much that his whip
becomes spoiled. Ballio fits the classic definition of a leno, as he is extremely greedy and only cares
about money. He compromises his morals constantly in order to make more money, and he almost
seems proud to accept his bad character. The most important example of this is when he sells
Phoenicium, Calidorus' love interest, to a

Menander, Plautus and Terence are playwrights who are recognized for their unique depictions of

new comedy, which was mainly characterized by communal issues and family relationships in
comparison to old comedy which disregarded slavery and focused on political and philosophical
criticism. Thus, the innovative focus of new comedy gave insight into Greek and Roman slave
cultures through the actions and portrayal of slave characters. However, it is often debated whether
or not these playwrights truly portrayed slavery within their comedies, due to their comedic
exaggerations. Although, these playwrights did introduce some distortion with the portrayal ... Show

In the play The Grouch, the degree to which punishment is enforced appears to be dependent on the
characterization of the master. For instance, when Daos is asked to approach Knemon's house, a
nasty grouch, he fearfully states, "If he catches me coming up his door, hell hang me on the spot"
(O'Bryhim, 119). Yet, Gorgios character, a poor citizen, hardly demonstrates any form of physical
and verbal infliction upon the same slave (Daos), besides reaffirming that Knemon has the right to
strike, he affirms, "Against force he has the law" (119). In other words, Gorgios lack of punishment,
yet awareness of authority, highlights a different Greek slave owning citizen. One who he kept his
integrity through his mindfulness of power, but considered his slave to be part of the household. In
addition, Sostratos is another character whose ideal of punishment is reflected by his
characterization. Although, Sostratos is a decent young man, his wealthy background immediately
implies he is spoiled (Tordoff and Akrigg, 154). His treatment of Pyrrhias differs from that of
Gorgias in the way he automatically assumes that's Pyrrhias has done something wrong for Knemon
to have inflicted punishment. This is seen in the following

Stock Characters In The Princess By William Goldman
According to Dictionary.com, a stock character is defined as "a character in literature, theater, or
film of a type quickly recognized and accepted by the reader or viewer and requiring no
development by the writer". Stock characters are widely seen as stereotypical and cliche. This
simple and standard type of character is well known and reappears throughout literature, no matter
the time period or genre. A common stock character is the damsel in distress. This is an age old
example of a stock character and can be found in countless stories, fables, myths, and novels, dating
back to some of the earliest pieces of literature. A damsel in distress is typically an unmarried
woman in some sort of trouble who is in need of saving. She is often times trapped, lost, and
hopelessly passive. She requires a savior to rescue her from the grave danger in which she has found
herself in. When all hope seems to be lost, this "knight in shining armor" enters the scene in a
blazing trail of glory, saves the dame, defeats the villain, and usually ends up with her in the end. ...

saves her. According to Goldman, the couple do indeed end up together, living happily ever after.
This is a prime example of a damsel in distress. The fair maiden is put in grave danger and is saved

Air France Financial Analysis
Introduction to Finance
Air France – KLM Financial Analysis.
Before reading I chose Air France as a company to analyze it financially–speaking. But, as my
major is in economy in ENPC, I will also include strategic information in this report. I based the
financial accounting on the data provided by Yahoo! Finance, which are the three statements, back
to March 31, 2007 for the oldest report base. I also reviewed some of other companies in the same
business line, especially for main indicators (EBIT, ROC, ROA, P/E...). It will be mentioned when
done so.

Pixar Merger Essay
Walt Disney has agreed on February 17th agreed to acquire Pixar, the animated film studio, in a $7.4
billion deal ($6.3 billion in stock plus $1.1 billion of the company's cash) it hopes will give new life
to its animation department and better position the company to compete in the digitalized media,
while noting that the price tag may water down Disney's profits in the near term. The deal also gives
Pixar and Jobs unprecedented access into what is perhaps the world's most renowned entertainment
brand, bringing together Disney's historic franchise of animated characters, such as Mickey, Minnie
Mouse and Donald Duck, with Pixar's stable of cartoon hits, including the two "Toy Story" films,
"Finding Nemo" and "The Incredibles."
Disney and Pixar can now collaborate without the barriers that come from two different companies
with two different sets of shareholders. Several Pixar executives will oversee Disney's animation
unit along with their own operations. Risks include: The issuance of shares of Disney common stock
to Pixar shareholders in the merger will initially have a negative impact on the earnings per share of
the combined company and will decrease the aggregate voting power of current Disney stockholders
and certain directors and executive officers of Pixar have interests in the merger that may be
different from, or in addition to, the interests of Pixar shareholders. Steve Jobs, ... Show more

Essay on Capsim Simulation Grading Guide
How the Simulation is Scored How performance in the Capstone Simulation results in a simulation
grade The base Capstone Simulation point score is generated as outlined below. You may access
your Round and Cumulative score during Team Competition on the CapSim website at Reports

will be used. Your grade for the team or Individual Competitions will be simply your total points

In Capstone's industry, this translates to a 10% ROS, 20% Net Margin, and 30% Contribution
Margin. Finally, consider your detailed Income Statement in your Annual Report. Typically, some of
your products are producing healthy margins, while others are slim to negative. Your task is to
improve How the Simulation is Scored Pg. 3 of 19 the margins on the poor performers. Are Period
Costs too high? Are Sales, and therefore the Contribution Margin, too low? Profits The Profit
category examines the rate at which wealth is being created. Where margins look at percentages, this
category examines the actual value of the profit. Because the industry is growing, the profit required
to earn 100 points increases each year. Year 5 $16 million Year 1 $6 million Year 6 $21 million Year
2 $8 million Year 7 $27 million Year 3 $10 million Year 8 $35 million Year 4 $12 million For
example, if this is Year 1, and your Net Profit is $3 million, you earned $3M/$6M or 50 points. Of
course, negative profits earn no points. You want your profits to be as high as possible. If you are
not earning 100 Profit Points, begin your diagnosis by examining your margins. 1. If your ROS is

but your Net Margin Percentage is above 20%,

Stereotypes Of Stock Characters In Film And Modern Family
A stock character is a fictional character in literature, film, theatre or television that is based on a
stereotype that is familiar to many people. Stock characters rely heavily on cultural types, manner of
speech, and other characteristics. They are an important component of any play or story because it
provides relationships and interactions that people will recognize immediately. People can
summarize the characters' role in the story in a sentence or less and people will know exactly what
you are talking about. They vary from widely known cultural types and mannerisms, and every
culture has its own set of stock characters. An example of a stock character is a Jewish Mother. She
nags, is overprotective and is a controlling figure.

One reason is because all the characters are stock characters.
The audience can be very entertained by "The Soldier "in Roman comedy because he is not bright
and easily misled by flattery, which makes his character pretty hilarious to watch. He is always
chasing after women, even if they are married, he thinks he is extremely handsome, and believes
that all of the women are in love with him. This character is very amusing to watch because he is so
"airheaded" that he could never actually be a real and respected soldier in an army.
The Slave in Roman comedy also plays a very large part in the humor aspect of the show. He may
not seem like a stock character in this present style of sitcoms, but back then the slave was a very
popular character. He is very smart, clever, always up to some scheme, and he is always plotting to
be made free. I find this very ironic because the slave should be the character who is dumb and
stupid but instead, he portrays himself as the one with the higher status rather than lower status
because he knows that he is smarter than the soldier and he always succeeds when he tricks the
Soldier into doing

Management Cisco Systems
Case Assignment, Chapter 6 (Short Answer)
Management
What Would You Do?
Cisco Systems, Palo Alto, California.
Your board of directors wants to know: How should Cisco grow? Your response was, "Well, the way
we've grown in the past is. . . ." "No. That's not the question. Looking backward is easy. How should
we grow in the future? Should we build or buy?" And with the next board meeting in only 3 months,
you don't have much time to come up with the answer. Cisco started in 1984 as the plumbers of the
Internet by making the switches and routers that direct data traffic over corporate networks and then
later, the Internet. Its products weren't sexy, but every company with an expanding network needed
them. So Cisco became the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Should we focus on products that businesses buy? After all, that's who we sell to now. Or, should we
take our expertise in routers and switches and focus on consumer products? Finally, while Cisco is
growing 15 percent per year, that's down significantly from the 40 percent growth that we've had
since inception, save for 2001. So we need to identify high–growth markets and products that we
could design and build.
If we grow by purchasing technology firms with already established products or services, should we
stick to our knitting by buying firms with products and services closely related to our existing
business? Or should we diversify by buying firms that are very different from our basic business,
routers and switches? For instance, Cisco has the opportunity to acquire a firm that specializes in
technology security (spam, viruses, malware, and other Internet threats), an area in which it has no
experience. What's more likely to work and be less risky, buying firms with similar products or
services (like Cisco's) or buying firms with different products or services? Basically, should Cisco
move beyond its core business? Finally, if we do decide to buy firms with already established
products or services, how can we make sure those acquisitions work? Study after study shows that
most mergers and acquisitions have no better than a 50–50 shot of working. In other words, buy
another firm, try to merge its products and services and culture and

Spoiled, But Not A Brat

  • 1. Spoiled, but Not a Brat Diquan Lamar Hubbard Introduction to College Writing Professor Sophie Bradford October 19, 2012 Spoiled, but not a Brat The ideal spoiled child does not come to mind easily. I observed people around campus, but I think one of the perfect examples of a spoiled child is Angelica Pickles from the popular Nickelodeon show Rugrats. Angelica showed characteristics that made her stand out as an antagonist. She would refer to the other characters as "dumb babies." Angelica would show how selfish she was by convincing the other characters to do plans that would only benefit her, which set her up most of the time as the antagonist in each episode. She would receive gifts to her heart's desire and not be the least bit thankful. Her parents set ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Because, she came to school in Camaros and Corvettes, other students assumed that she was going to be brat. I worked with her in Student Council, a club that makes decisions for the school and does community service, for three years. I have seen, just by working with her how hard she works. She is constantly being taught things from her father that will make her into a well off college student. She explained that she had to do the same things as most other normal kids and that she got this philosophy from her father who did not start out as an oil tycoon, but worked his way up. I have also seen a counter example in a people that may not be rich, but they were brats. I was in program called Upward Bound, while I was in high school. Upward Bound was created for at–risk teens that may not have come from the wealthiest of homes and they are usually first–generation college students. While I was in Upward Bound it was common to see people with nice things, but they had worked for them. They wore expensive clothes; they had all kinds of expensive technology like MacBook's and iPads. A lot of them worked too and they would off–set the cost of a lot of their things. There were some that didn't; that acted like they deserved to have things given to them just for being present. In Upward Bound they would help us by giving us checks for our mileage and gifts all of the time. There were some people who were just ungrateful for what they were ... • 10. Children Are Becoming Extremely Spoiled Children are being babied way too much. Children are becoming extremely spoiled; to the point of no return. An end needs to be put to this before an inevitable catastrophe occurs! If ever given the chance, it is quite frightening to think about where this generations kids will stand a few years from now, is it not? Something needs to be done. Our world cannot afford more spoiled children. "A spoiled child is undisciplined, manipulative, and unpleasant to be with much of the time" (Schmitt). With the way our society is now, kids are becoming very spoiled which is forming them to be narcissistic children. Do we really want more people like Donald Trump? For goodness sake, the man believes a loan of one million dollars to be small! Is that what we want? Well if parenting continues the way it is, that's what society will get. Spoiling will form youngsters into becoming selfish little pampered brats, and pampered children are problematic for parents; as well as for future children, adults, or others they will encounter along the path of their everyday lives in the future. "Spoiled children run into trouble by the time they reach school age. Other children do not like them because they are too bossy and selfish. Adults do not like them because they are rude and make excessive demands. Eventually spoiled children become hard for even parents to love because of their behavior" (Schmitt). This is why it is crucial for our society to make future parents aware of the need of parenting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Removalists Essay Australian dramas, such as David Williamson's "The Removalists", inclination to depend on stereotypes is not a weakness, but instead an opportunity to explore personal and societal issues. The inclusion of stereotypes within the play does not hinder the exploration of these issues, but instead deepens the audiences understanding and awareness. Through familiar roles, such as the 'Oker' identity, Williamson heightens the play, and allows a production to focus on the themes being explored. By using stereotyped characters in contrast with realistic characters and style, Williamson effectively comment on the faults of society without the distraction of character complexity. The Oker character is used by Williamson as a tool to allow the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this scene we tended to speak loudly, often finding ourselves shouting and making rude innuendos and racist comments. As we workshopped the scene further, we discussed how this was a representation of the Australian society that we had seen in the media. It could be concluded from my workshop, that in a production of The Removalists this familiarity of character was an opportunity, as it allows the faults within the stereotype to dominate. As well as emphasise on the faults within the stereotype, the use of recognisable characters in a production of The Removalists allows for an effective comment on the faults within Australian society. Through the use of stereotyped characters, the play provides a deeper insight into the serious personal and societal issues within the Australian community, without the distraction of character complexity. These themes, which are explored through stereotypes, are violence, abuse of authority, and sexism and sexuality. The underlying messages that Australia is an inherently violent society, and that the Australian male uses violence to resolve their problems is shown in The Removalists through the Oker identity of Simmonds and Kenny. Stereotypes creating deeper understanding of the themes when staging this production are presented immediately by Kenny's recognisable personality, which allows the audience to easily accept that Kenny would abuse his wife ... Tartuffe, by Molière, is a French satire which is over exaggerated and critical towards the upper class. It also ridicules hypocrisy and the upper class. Molière's unique choice of using stock characters contributes to the technical development of the work. Specifically, Dorine holds the role of the Zanni, the servant who provides comedic relief. Madame Pernelle fits the category of the Pantalone because despite being a woman, she is wealthy and an upperclassman, meaning she's at the top of the social pyramid. Orgon fits into the category of the Dottore, as he is the head of the household and also at the top of the social pyramid. In Act I, Scene I Dorine says, "if anyone were to listen to him and believe in his maxims, one could not do anything without committing a sin; for he controls everything, this carping critic". Through dialogue, Dorine exposes Tartuffe to the audience. This affects our perception of Tartuffe, we become aware of who Tartuffe really is and what his natural character is like. The catalyst to this increase comes mainly from an increase in assets and not a decrease in liabilities. A potential reason for this increase could be due to the fact that Microline signed a ten year note with a debt covenant stating that the company needed to maintain a current ratio of 1or the note will mature. This could have led the company to increase their account receivables and inventory in order to bump up their assets to meet the debt covenant. There interest coverage increased from 2010 to 2011 from 3.8 in 2010 to 5.75 in 2011. This shows an increase in solvency where the firm can cover the interest on it loans 5.75 times. However, their solvency in terms of interest coverage comes into question as their short term equities account for $2500 which is not a reflection of consistent cash flow generated from sales. Without the presence of short term equities Microlines interest coverage actually falls from 3.8 in 2010 to 3.25 in 2011. Risk And Return Analysis : Risk Risk and Return Analysis Risk has a role in individual's lives around the world and that role can be influenced by an individual's character and their daily life. When investing in an investment instrument, there are risks and the level of risk differs contingent on specific investment, the source of risk also is subject to the investment. The economy can be a change where the investments can be changed and can drastically increase or decrease. Investment returns is the total amount that can be earned or lost in any investment. Risk and return are essentially connected. The relationship between risk and return is the higher the risk there is a possibility of a larger return. The relationship of risk and return is by quantities of investment. Between the higher risk and the lower risk is a return that rises with an increase in risk. Some of the main characters that I will be talking about in this essay are Jordan Belfort also referred to as Jordy, he is played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Donnie Azoff Played by Jonah Hill. There are many other characters in this movie, but these are the main characters that are faced with difficult dilemmas. A lot of the choices that are made in this movie are Unethical. Even though it seems that he does everything for greed you end up understanding the reasons he did those things, but even though they are done for the right reasons does not mean it is right. The Character that faced with the most dilemmas is Jordan Belfort. One of the Dilemmas that he is faced with in this movie is when the stock market crashes on the day that he received his broker license. He loses his Job and has to be a difficult decision between getting a temporary job in retail or work for a small investment firm with little to no regulations selling penny stocks. As such, the case encourages a discussion of the application of option pricing models, such as Black–Scholes, and exposes students to popular misconceptions of how options should be valued. Introduction In the August 2015, most of the Australian business media reported that the board of Federation Centre ("FDC") sacked Steven Sewell as a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and then replaced him with Angus McNaughton as a new CEO. This removal subsequently surprised investors and markets because it occurred just two months after the completion of the merger between FDC and Novion Property Group ("Novion"). Moreover, there is no further explanation from the board of FDC about the reason of removal Steven Sewell. Consequently, the shares of the FDC declined 6% since the replacement. The removal of a director by the board in the FDC case creates legal and ethical issues, which ultimately led to the onset of commercial issues. Despite the legal, ethical and commercial issues, this case is strongly indicated that there are some problems in the mechanism of removal directors stipulated in the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) ("Corporations Act") S 203D and S 203E. This indication is underpinned by some cases in the Australian court in which directors are removed also by the board. Therefore, this paper will analyse the legal, ethical and commercial issues regarding with the removal of FDC's director, discuss the problem in the procedure of removal directors stipulated in the legislation, and compare other regulations in the common law and civil law countries. Finally, drafts of new mechanism of dismissal directors will be provided in this research to reform Section 203D ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A number of economic factors in the United States during 2008 might have accelerated Deloitte & Touche's decision to issue an audit opinion modified to disclose going–concern uncertainties. Chief among the many factors was a dramatic change in the ability to create new lines of credit, which dried up the flow of money and slowed new economic growth and the buying and selling of assets. There were other factors as well, including the cheap credit which made it too easy for people to buy houses or make other investments based on pure speculation. Cheap credit created more money in the system and people wanted to spend that money. The housing market decline also caused a chain reaction in the economy. Individuals and investors could no longer sell their homes for a quick profit causing massive losses in mortgage backed securities and many banks and investment firms began bleeding money. 5. More specifically, why this show is still one of the most popular on TV even though the series finale aired 13 years ago. I think that this show has maintained its popularity due to the nostalgia it invokes, its use of stock characters, the empathy that viewers feel for the characters, and its ability to stand out amongst the massive amount of sitcoms that take place in New York City. One of the main reasons Friends is such a popular TV show is through its capability to transport the viewer to a different era. More specifically, it discusses how the setting of television shows isn't that important, what matters is that the show has the ability to transport you into the world of the characters. It also says that when TV shows do this, the viewer gets much more attached to the show. Austen's story depicts the life of a family who loses everything because of the death of their father. The father's wealth goes to his son, John Dashwood. Mr. Dashwood doesn't help his sisters because his wife, Fannie, doesn't think it's a good idea. When all hope is lost, Edward Ferrars enters the story and takes an interest in the eldest daughter, Elinor. Throughout this story, Austen introduces many characters, some of which have minor roles. Marianne is hoping to meet John Willoughby for an explanation and Lucy and Elinor are hoping to see Edward. While in London, Lucy meets Robert Ferrars whom she finds to be an exceptional gentleman. Lucy and Robert end up marrying which frees up Edward for Elinor. If Lucy hadn't been a part in the story she would not have been able to meet Robert, making Edward and Lucy engaged. Lucy had a very important role in the plot. Einstein's butterfly theory shows how one little thing can change the outcome of something completely. If anything had changed in Austen's story nothing would be the same. Each minor character that is included has a purpose to her story and they are all important. • 112. The Merger Is A Final Reorganization Essay 1. The merger is a qualifying reorganization. It is a forward triangular merger, §368(a)(2)(D), because the parent (ODI) created a subsidiary (Atlantic) with the contribution of its stock (the ODI Nonvoting Preferred Stock), and then the target (CPI) merges into the subsidiary (Atlantic). CPI's shareholders will receive the nonvoting preferred stock of ODI, and CPI will disappear. The requirements necessary under §368(a)(2)(D) is that the subsidiary acquires substantially all of the target's assets, which will be 90% of net and 70% of gross. This does occur because Atlantic acquires all of CPI's assets and liabilities. Typically, stripping off a target's assets are prohibited, but in this case the subsidiary is acquiring the cash received from the sale of the tools division. Another requirement is that the target's shareholders only receive stock of the parent and not the subsidiary, and in this case, the stock transferred to CPI's shareholders are all ODI's stock. Another requirement is that the target is merged into the subsidiary, which does occur; CPI merges into Atlantic and Atlantic survives. The final requirements are the judicial authority requirements. There is a continuity of shareholder's interest test, just like required in a type "A" merger. Even though not all three shareholders of CPI receive shares of ODI, Harry's and Teresa's ownership is greater than 50% of CPI. Harry owns 60% (300/500) of CPI and Teresa owns 22% (110/500) of CPI. A joint–stock company was formed by a number of individuals who each contributed various amounts of money in exchange for a certain amount of shares. Joint–stock companies established the first profitable colonies. charter A charter is written authorization that gives an organization permission to do business. The London Company and the Plymouth Company asked King James I to allow them to create a joint–stock company to establish colonies. The king allowed them to do so by issuing a charter. The charter was similar to a constitution for the colony and allowed the two companies to settle on the east coast of America and control trade. It allowed the London Company to colonize the land from the Potomac south to South Carolina, and the Plymouth company to colonize land between Maine and New York. Stereotypes function in society as a perceived notion of a group of individuals based upon prior experience from a select few people from aforementioned group. Stereotypes exist within literature as well; stereotypes can be used to help personify individuals and make the best stock characters. The stereotype of a character can be used to better exemplify what people may or may not be really like. In The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, Sinclair stereotypes immigrants to show their initial optimism, ignorance and finally– the realization of what life is really like. Immigrants or foreigners are usually shown as being optimistic about coming to a new land, especially with "living the American Dream". Jurgis is telling others "That is well enough for men like you," he would say, "silpnas, puny fellows–but my back is broad"(page 20). Jurgis is optimistic that it would not hurt him, if he were to be beaten, but he is also a young individual with a lack of true work. Like many others that were coming over to the United States during the time period, their perceived notion of how work is in the United States is not the same as what is concurrently occurring. Sinclair uses that opportunity to show how confident Jurgis is feeling about his working ability and because he worked in Lithuania, it must be the same. • 129. Stock Characters In Roman Comedy In Roman comedy, the use of stock characters helped to represent common archetypes in society. Stock characters were also used to allow for audiences to easily understand a production, as the characters were so commonly seen. In modern movies and specifically American comedy, stereotypical characters are often used that demonstrate society's beliefs about certain types of people. These characters are often used satirically to mock the stereotypes that lead people to judge others. Regardless of when stock characters are utilized, they point to the ideas that a society has about certain types of people during a specific time period. The stock character of the leno, or brothel–keeper or pimp, is a character that many, if not all, Romans would have immediately recognized. The leno is represented in Plautus' Pseudolus by a character named Ballio. He owns the love interest of Calidorus, master of Pseudolus, and is known for his greed and physical harshness towards his slaves. He is seen in the play constantly beating his slaves, and he calls them names such as "whip–spoilers" (139), which indicates that Ballio beats them so much that his whip becomes spoiled. Ballio fits the classic definition of a leno, as he is extremely greedy and only cares about money. He compromises his morals constantly in order to make more money, and he almost seems proud to accept his bad character. The most important example of this is when he sells Phoenicium, Calidorus' love interest, to a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Plautus and Terence from Rome and Menander from Greece, were all part of new comedy, which was mainly characterized by communal issues and family relationships in comparison to old comedy which disregarded slavery and focused on political and philosophical criticism. Thus, the innovative focus of new comedy gave insight into Greek and Roman slave cultures through the actions and portrayal of slave characters. In the play The Grouch, the degree to which punishment is enforced appears to be dependent on the characterization of the master. For instance, when Daos is asked to approach Knemon's house, a nasty grouch, he fearfully states, "If he catches me coming up his door, hell hang me on the spot" (O'Bryhim, 119). Yet, Gorgios character, a poor citizen, hardly demonstrates any form of physical and verbal infliction upon the same slave (Daos), besides reaffirming that Knemon has the right to strike, he affirms, "Against force he has the law" (119). In other words, Gorgios lack of punishment, yet awareness of authority, highlights a different Greek slave owning citizen. One who he kept his integrity through his mindfulness of power, but considered his slave to be part of the household. In addition, Sostratos is another character whose ideal of punishment is reflected by his characterization. Although, Sostratos is a decent young man, his wealthy background immediately implies he is spoiled (Tordoff and Akrigg, 154). Stock Characters In The Princess By William Goldman According to Dictionary.com, a stock character is defined as "a character in literature, theater, or film of a type quickly recognized and accepted by the reader or viewer and requiring no development by the writer". Stock characters are widely seen as stereotypical and cliche. This simple and standard type of character is well known and reappears throughout literature, no matter the time period or genre. A common stock character is the damsel in distress. This is an age old example of a stock character and can be found in countless stories, fables, myths, and novels, dating back to some of the earliest pieces of literature. A damsel in distress is typically an unmarried woman in some sort of trouble who is in need of saving. She is often times trapped, lost, and hopelessly passive. She requires a savior to rescue her from the grave danger in which she has found herself in. He may not seem like a stock character in this present style of sitcoms, but back then the slave was a very popular character.
