Compromise of 1850
At the time of the creation of the Constitution, the issue of slavery had been put off and avoided, a
decision that would later lead to the controversy now known as the American Civil War. The
composition, which was once the solution to problems that the Union was having, had the opposite
effect in the 1850s, when arguments and different interpretations of the Constitution resulted in
sectionalism, threat of secession, and tension between the North and the South. Abolitionists in the
North tried to preserve the Union while abolishing slavery, while southerners supported slavery in the
new territory and threatened to secede; the Compromise of 1850, especially the Fugitive Slave Law,
increased these beliefs. The Compromise of 1850 brought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This man also believed in popular sovereignty, meaning the people should choose whether or not they
want to spread it. This account contradicts Document E and Emerson s views. The government was
unable to come to a compromise so that both sides would be satisfied, hence the sectionalism. The
Constitution s lack of mentioning slavery and the misinterpretations of it made it become a source of
sectional discord rather than an instrument of national unity. President James Buchanan was known to
favor the south, which is evident in his fourth annual message to Congress in 1860, as seen in
Document G. President Buchanan deals with the fact that the states were sovereign, therefore having
the right to manage slavery in their own way. He also states that the states, particularly the South, had
the right to resist the government if all peaceful measures to restore unity did not work. He also makes
the point that Congress is by no means of the Constitution given the power to use force against the
states to prevent secession. He suggests three amendments that elucidate the protection of slavery and
that could help avoid sectionalism within the Union. Poor political decisions contributed the fail of the
Union along with the Constitution. One that would fall under this category is the Kansas Nebraska

Teen Suicides
Teen suicide in Colorado is at an all time high. It has become one of the biggest social problems
affecting all our lives in one way or another. It is a day to day experience and everyday news in our
society. It is the third leading cause of death within today s youth (Collegian). Along with so many
other things in the world that bring tragedy, it can be prevented. Douglas County needs to consider
preventing teen suicide by providing better, safer hotlines and resources, learning how to help peers
when they are down, and changing society s unrealistic expectations.
According to the Denver Post, Colorado s suicide rate, is one of the highest in the country. Statewide,
50 young people ages 10 18 died by suicide in 2014. That number jumped to 72 in 2015 and remained
high at 68 in 2016, according to state health department data. This year, 2017, colorado has already
handled eight teen suicides with three of them happening just last month.

Suicide is a very complex issue to understand. According to Colorado Dept. of Public Health and
Environment, The role social media plays in teen suicide and depression is also complex , she said. It
connects people going through similar problems even when they aren t close geographically, yet, on
the flip side, the filtered selfies and endless posts of others having fun can plummet teens self esteem.

St. Louis, Missouri is famous for the Gateway Arch and the Zoo; however, the Saint Louis Art
Museum (SLAM) is something that can t be overlooked. At a recent trip, I found a landscape painting
that shows the true meaning of human interaction. This panting is called Extensive Landscape With
Travellers on a Country Road and was painted by Jan Brueghel the Elder around 1608 to 1610. Some
background information about the infamous painter Jan Brueghel is that he was born in 1568 in
Brussels, Belgium. He was a painter of immense diversity. His art work includes biblical,
mythological, battle scenes, seascapes, still lifes, portraits, and numerous landscapes. Some of his

It shows the true beauty of a landscape painting with numerous formal elements and principles of
design. The painting is appealing to me because I have always been engaged outside working on our
farm, or hunting with my brother. Knowing the importance a road make for my family when we move
are goods to the local grain elevator. This panting is similar in that regard because it involves the
working class on a winding road. Their dependence on the road to move goods and obtain food from
place to place. Brueghel s painting still hold true today because people depend on roads for interaction
and movement of goods. When gazing at the painting, I can see myself stuck in time; performing the
different tasks alongside the road. When I first saw the painting compared to now, I would say that my
response to the panting has changed. At first glance you see a typical landscape; however, when
analyzing the painting you can find the true meaning of human interactions. As you can see, The
Extensive Landscape With Travellers on a Country Road by Jan Brueghel is a remarkable painting
with numerous elements and principles of design. I hope you enjoyed this painting as much as I have.
I would of never guessed that such a remarkable painting would be located so close to home at the St.

Health Law and Regulations In understanding regulatory agencies the differences between regulation
and legislation needs defining. Legislation is the law that has been passed by a voting process and
regulation is the responsibility of the regulatory board appointed to enforce laws once the law is
passed; it sets forth rules on how the laws are to be implemented and to what degree. In health care the
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has the predominant responsibility to enforce
legislation that impacts the health and well being of Americans. Under the umbrella of HHS there are

Conflict Between Men And Women
Conflict between men and women
Trifles is a short story that Susan Glaspell wrote about between men and women. It s specifically
targeting the way men attitudes were towards women. Trifles talks about a murder that is unsolved, a
country woman suspected of killing her husband in an isolated farm. Men in this short story worry
more about looking for big evidence and judging about Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen instead of
looking in her stuff for evidence. The men think that in the kitchen there is nothing important. Instead
they go to the barn and to the bedroom to find evidence. Meanwhile the women find a dead bird with a
broken neck that could mean why she killed Mr. Wright. At the end the women decide to hide the
evidence. That is because they think she had her own reasons to kill him because Mr. Wright could
have killed the bird and that it was important to Mrs. Wright. In Trifles there is a conflict between the
masculine attitudes towards women.
Men in Trifles are judgmental when they see Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen. They think that Mrs.
Wright should have cleaned up the kitchen before she left. The County Attorney thinks that a woman s
place is in the kitchen and that she should have everything cleaned up. When the County Attorney is
looking around the kitchen he opens the door of a closet and looks on the top shelf. Then he pulls his
hand away sticky and says, Here s a nice mess (1388), criticizing Mrs. Wright s kitchen. He pulls out a

Do Gucci Catalogs Stack Up in Direct Marketing
Case 2: Do Gucci Catalogs Stack Up in Direct Marketing?
Catalogs, one type of direct mail merchandising, have been increasing in popularity as consumers look
toward convenience in their shopping. Catalog business has even been expanding on the international
horizon, Harris Catalog Library has offered 1,250 domestic and international catalogs for patrons to
order from. Catalog libraries can be found close to home in U.S. libraries, and as far away as Japanese
department stores. The Japanese have been especially fond of shopping by catalog, since by ordering
American products directly from catalogs, savings up to 30 or 40 percent can be had over local
retailers. Total U.S. catalog sales were $78.6 billion in 1997 and were expected ... Show more content

This game, therefore, not only benefits Gucci by stimulating readership
(due to the consumer s increased scrutiny of the catalog for lucky numbers); but serves as an
inducement for the customer to make a catalog purchase.
Unfortunately, while the marketing department feels that they have a winning strategy, top
management is not so sure. Before authorizing the implementation of this plan, top management wants
a marketing researcher to discover if the plan is a viable one. Based on the researcher s report,
management will decide whether or not to give marketing the green light.

Examples Of Queer Theory In The Great Gatsby
Ryann Alyssa Peebles

Literally Analysis Paper

ENGL100A_FA_2017
Queer theory is a post structuralist theory that emerged in the early 1990s from the fields of queer and
women s studies. The theory builds on both feminist challenges to the idea that gender is part of the
essential self and upon gay and lesbian studies close examination of the socially constructed nature of
sexual activity and identities. This theory focuses on the mismatches between sex, gender, and desire.
Queerness has been prominently identified as bisexual, lesbian, and gay people, although it also
includes different categories such as cross dressing, intersex bodies and identities, gender ambiguity
and gender corrective surgery. The queer theory is an attempt to expose the different lifestyles that
people may be unaware of and to give them several categories in the LGBTQ community to look at;
correlates sexes, genders, and sexualities out of specifically lesbian and gay. One of these examples of
queer analysis is in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby.
The narrative progression in the novel is stationed around Jay Gatsby s deep love for Daisy Fay
Buchanan and the three overlapping heterosexual love triangles: Gatsby Daisy Tom, Tom Myrtle
George, Myrtle Tom Daisy. This heterosexual plot is indeed shadowed by a homoerotic subtext but
with all the twists and turns of the novel.
I argue that the novel s sexual wrongdoing and the creation of lesbian and gay subtext work in

The Rights Of Gun Control
In the United States the right to keep and bear arms is a right for Americans protected by the Second
Amendment to the Constitution. This Amendment has accounted for many vigorous debates over the
nature of its content. This has led for gun control to become an extremely controversial area of
American politics. It is primarily defined by two different groups, those supporting gun control and
those supporting gun rights. These groups often disagree on the interpretation of laws and court cases
related to firearms. Even more so, they disagree about the effects of gun control on crime and the
overall safety of the public. It is clearly in the interests, of all Americans, to reduce gun violence in the
country. Each day, on an average, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States firearm homicide rate is twenty times higher than the combined rates of twenty two
countries in which are similar in wealth and population with the United States. Also, statistics show
homes containing a firearm are twenty two times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic
homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self defense. Since the 1990s, debates
regarding firearm availability and gun violence in the United States have been characterized by
concerns about the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters believe broad, unrestricted gun rights
inhibit the government from fulfilling their responsibility to protect the safety of the public. Also,
these advocates state keeping guns out of the hands of criminals results in safer communities. Gun
rights supporters promote firearms for self defense, hunting, sporting activities, and security against
tyranny. Gun rights advocates also believe firearm ownership by law abiding citizens reduces crime.
However, many of these beliefs are based on nonfactual evidence and, in fact, are quite false. Perhaps,
one of the greatest myths believed today by this debate is attempts to ban the possession of handguns,
or certain kinds of guns, are a viable option for reducing crime. It has often been proposed more guns
mean more deaths and therefore, fewer guns would equate to fewer deaths. Unfortunately, these
thoughts are all too often

Joseph Smith s Contributions to the Development of Mormons
Mormons were created by Joseph Smith in 1820, when Smith was 14 and lived in New York. During
that time God supposedly came to him and told him not to join any of the churches in his town.
Instead God told Smith to start a new religion that was based on One Lord, One Faith, and One
Baptism . God also said that no other churches were leading and teaching their people the right way,
by God s way. Smith believed that the figure speaking to him was God so he went out and began this
new religion he named Mormon. In 1830, Joseph Smith published The Book of Mormon . Also Smith
began the Latter Day Saints Church in 1830 in Palmyra, New York. Brigham Young was the successor
to Smith and the second President of the Latter Day Saints Church. Ezra Taft Benson was also a friend
of Smith s and a former United States Secretary of Agriculture under President Eisenhower and
thirteenth President of the Latter Day Saints Church. George Albert Smith was the 8th President of the
Mormon Church. At the moment, Thomas S. Monson is the President and he is the 16th President of
the Latter Day Saints Church of Christ. Each President has the assistance of a group of contemporary
apostles. The Church of Latter Day Saints or any other Church of Mormons estimates between eleven
million and twelve million followers. Mormon beliefs are very different from Christian beliefs,

Common and Scientific Name of Species:
The Burmese Python is commonly known as the Python Molurus Bivittatus (Reed).
Physical Characteristics:
Burmese python s grow rapidly, are excellent tree climbers when young, and are known as one of the
largest snakes on Earth. They are also excellent swimmers, and can stay submerged for up to 30
minutes before surfacing for air (National Geographic). On average, they can reach up to lengths of 23
feet, and a weight of 200 pounds; they also have a large diameter. Average life span in the wild: 20 to

Original habitat and Current Location:
The Burmese python is native to Southeast Asia and is established in natural areas in southern Florida
such as Everglades National Park (ENP) (Snow et al. 2007a) (Frank J. Mazzotti). The only breeding
populations of Burmese pythons in the U.S. are found in the Everglades National Park and Big

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ( Ptsd )
PTSD in Catcher in the Rye Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is most commonly thought of as an illness
men and women acquire from experiences while serving in the wars. Some do not even know what it
is or how much it affects people s lives. In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger helps to
convey what Post Traumatic Stress Disorder really is. PTSD is a curable condition triggered by a
traumatic event with many types, causes, and symptoms displayed by Holden Caulfield.
All of the people who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder have described the events causing
this condition as frightening and stressful. PTSD develops in about 1 in 3 people who experience
severe trauma ( Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Causes ). It is a common disorder and different
people come upon it in a variety of ways. In most cases, events responsible for Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder occur in the person s early life and in people who have a history of mental illnesses such as
depression or anxiety. Also, most patients have always had trouble coping with tragedies and do not
have very much support around the time of the trauma ( Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) ).
This condition can develop in different amounts of time following the situation, depending on the
person. It can begin immediately after, weeks, months, or even years later ( Post traumatic Stress

Copper And Zinc Reaction Lab Report
In retrospect, the practical was very easy to follow and achieved the desired results. In order to
quantify the amount of electricity generated through the spontaneous redox reaction, a multimeter was
used to measure the follow of electricity between the Copper and the anode. This gave us an increased
reliability and accuracy than using an analogue voltmeter. When it was calculated, the reaction
between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The Copper and
Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v whilst the Copper
and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions, the electron transfer
direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses electrons and the place of
reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the electron flow direction is from
the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization agents, to the Copper cathode, the
reduction agent. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These differences across all three reactions ranged from 0.056 volts and 1.58 volts. The potential
cause for these inaccuracies are numerous. The occurrence of these inaccuracies may have been due to
random errors such as the sizes of the filter paper and meta strips, inaccurate measurements of the
solutions, weight of the metal strips. In addition, the introduction of systematic errors may have also
increased the inaccuracies in the results. Some systematic errors which occurred were: not sanding any
of the metal strips as well as not having a specified amount of time for soaking the filter paper. These
errors both random and systematic may have been minimised or highlighted through conducting

Napoleon Bonaparte And George Washington
In the middle of three significant historical events, we find two notable men, Napoleon Bonaparte, and
George Washington. The U.S American Revolution, 1775 1783(History Online) the end of the French
Revolution, 1789 1799 the commencement of the Napoleonic Era, 1804 1815(Bonjour la France).
Two Revolutions, two Generals, on two Continents. Bonaparte and Washington fought for equality,
freedom, and fraternity for their homelands. This essay will compare and contrast Napoleon Bonaparte
and George Washington by their education, most significant battle, and achievements.
The question is, was Napoleon Bonaparte a dictator, or one of the most remarkable military strategist?
Opinions are diverse about the man who crowned himself as an Emperor. In fact, this explains
Napoleon s words when he said: Circumstances what are circumstances? I make circumstances

treasure to establish, we must drive far away the demon of party spirit and local reproach George
Washington. (Forbes/Online).

Reflection Paper On Painting
Before you even start painting you have to decide what type of material you will be painting on. In
modern days you will most likely land on paper as the material you choose to paint on. After choosing
to paint on paper you should decide on what type of paint to use. The artist s painting, I am looking at
choose to use watercolor paints on a watercolor paper. Apparently watercolor paper is made with
linters or cotton rags unlike how printer paper is made. Cotton rags are supposedly stronger than wood
fibers or linters, as a result the paper is relatively strong. An additional advantage to using cotton rages
is it makes the paper flexible, therefor less likely to rip. If you use older pieces of cotton rages you
would be recycling, which I consider is another advantage. I assume that the artist used watercolor
paper that was made a similar way, but I don t know for sure.
Once you choose the material and paint you are using you might start thinking about what you re
going to paint and how to make it look the way you want it to. One way to make your paintings look
like how you want is using visual elements. There are several types of visual elements an artist can
use, including line and color. For the painting I am analyzing the artist ended up using the elements
value, and texture mostly. The element value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Green has a
variety of different values, and the artist utilizes these different values in his watercolor painting. For
the tree leaves, he has a darker green closer to the center of the tree, then a light color or value of
green as the leaves branch out farther away from the center of the tree. As he painted the grass, he
made it a different value of green than the trees. I believe that the artist used different values of green
to represent different implied textures. However, since he used values of the same color all the green
items in the painting seemed to belong together. As a result of the different greens there doesn t seem
too be one color that sticks out the most, they all seem to be in harmony. Even though value is very
evident in the painting, texture is also used considerably in this painting. It is used in the grass, tree
leaves, and even the

different and very much the alike at the same time. On the other hand, some similarities also lie
between two nations. While the culture of America is a mixture of different cultures, the Indian culture
is unique and has its own values. There are many types of differences lies between American culture
and Indian culture in terms of Religions, Languages, Rituals and Cuisines. Religious is a set of
common beliefs and practices generally held by a group of people that is usually separated by rituals
and religious laws. There are so many cultures within each country. India is one of the most
religiously diverse country in the world with one of the most deeply religious societies and cultures.
Religion plays a central and definitive role in the life of many of its people. The religions that
originated in the Indian subcontinents are Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism and

I was about to leave then I thought to myself I can do this, but I was wrong. When I went after them
down the hill, I had too much weight on the back of my skate board. The board slipped out from under
me and I fell backwards and tried to stop myself with my hand but the was a stupid decision. When I
landed my arm snapped, I didn t know what happened but it hurt so I took off after my house. By the
time I got to my house I was balling my eyes out. I tried to tell her what happened but not a lot of
words came out. But when she saw my wrist to told my dad and told him to get the car ready. She sat

Susan Griffin The Banking Concept Of Education Analysis
Rigid top down cultures exist over the course of history and throughout the world. These cultures have
been seen in World War II Germany and in education in Brazil. It has been shown throughout history
that these cultures can and will cause many problems to fester as a result. These issues include the
manufacturing of sheep like masses that simply follow what they are told and taught, the culture
losing its ability to distinguish between what is morally right and wrong, and the forced masking of
emotions and true feelings. The only way to prevent a culture from simply manufacturing sheep like
masses is by encouraging people to not be afraid to stand out in a crowd and allowing, and even
embracing, free thinking.
In Our Story by Susan Griffin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe this can be done through two main ideas. The first, which can be seen in Griffin s writing is
to instill the idea that it is not a bad thing to stand out in a crowd. The second is by encouraging free
thinking and learning as Freire helps to call to mind through his writings on the education system. The
way people act today is not always who they are. People act in a way that they think is normal and the
way that they think they are expected to be. This normalization is essentially brainwashing in and of
itself and this automatically creates the people that do not know how to do anything but follow
authority. When people are not worried about standing out in the crowd, then they are able to think
freely and for themselves, rather than for the oppressive people above them. This is the first step in
breaking the structure of the rigid top down society. The second step is encouraging free thinking. Free
thinking is one of the greatest way to overcome the rigid top down society model because when you
allow people to freely think and express themselves you cannot have oppression by radical leaders
who choose to implement ideas and plans that do not follow the moral code of the people. The free
thinkers can create doubt throughout society and opens the door for others to think for themselves
creating a large group of people who can think for themselves and decide whether the

Dissection Of Easter Morning By Robert Frost
Dissection of Easter Morning The poem Easter Morning is a part of the poetry produced by A.R.
Ammons in 1981. A.R. Ammons was interested in the sciences but also held a love for literature. He
liked to involve nature in his work. Easter Morning is very abstract, has tropes that further the images
presented, and is not confined to form. The perception of human ambiguities and abstract possibilities
in homely bits of nature may have originated in Robert Frost. (N.A. 288) His work like most other
authors of his time is influenced by others like Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams. This poem
is heavily influenced by Robert Frost. Frost likes to create poetry that helps you bring some meaning
out of a situation presented in nature. For close inspection, the form, sentence structures, and syntax
are a highlight of what he wants to convey to the reader. Easter Morning is in written free verse and
divided into verse paragraphs. (enotes.com) Along with the other literary figures of his time that have
an influence on his work, this poem is truly free verse. It doesn t have any syllabic pattern, or run on
sentences. The syntax is very clear, coherent. It is almost childlike in its simplicity. This adds to the
overall feeling Ammons wants to convey to the reader. The sentence structure is very precise. He
leaves some words all alone that are to cause a break in the reading. They also leave the reader
thinking why he did that. ...all in the graveyard assembled, done for,

currency transactions are converted into SGD at exchange rates, which follow bank rates prevailing at
dates of transactions. This year they lose $15.3 million because of the effect of the exchange rate
changes.
As can be seen in Singapore Airline Cash Flow Statement, the net cash of SIA operating activities is a

He continued to be involved in scientific discussions and continued writing. In 1623, he published his
book The Assayer Il Saggiatore, which was a great attack on the Aristotelian philosophers who base
their theories on Aristotle s authority rather than their observations. In this book Galileo claimed that
the language of nature s book is mathematics and that the way to understand nature is through
mathematics. The book was highly successful, even with the new Pope Urbanus XIII, and among the
higher echelons of the Christian church. Encouraged by his success, Galileo began writing his
comprehensive book on the Copernican theory, The Dialogue A Bout Two Ch ief World Systems,
which was published in 1632. The book presents the claims favoring the Copernican theory and shows
that the motion of the earth is possible. The book is full of harsh attacks against Aristotelian

How Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Changed My Life
Through Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I grew to fear no man. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art all about the
smaller opponent using leverage to defeat the larger foe. Learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has improved my
life in many aspects. Before my life on the mat I was a unconfident, chubby kid who couldn t stand up
for himself, but Brazilian Jiu Jitsu would sculpt me in the confident, strong, and leading person I am
today. Before learning martial arts, I didn t feel like my life had meaning. Without a purpose I went
aimlessly around day to day without a goal in sight. I was overweight, self conscious and miserable.
Every morning I woke up just to perform the same routine: wake up, go to school, come home, do
homework, then repeat the next day. Physical education (P.E) was one of the worst parts. I always felt
inadequate because I couldn t keep up with the other kids, and I was constantly ridiculed. I sulked
around the halls ashamed by my own self, allowing myself be pushed around. I was weak, ... Show

how to take initiative for the advantage and work through disadvantages. Friendly confrontation
carried me out of my timid to be myself and speak out. Enduring many competitive matches has lead
to be in control of my nerves. I m able to stay calm under pressure and still make rational decisions.
Now I have a goal in my life: to further better myself in the art. Becoming a martial artist has brought
me great self discipline, whether to use force or following a weight cut plan. All of this skills that I ve

MODERN WARFARE. To secure peace is to prepare for war said Carl Von Clausewitz. This means if
a nation is well armed, other nations will be wary of attacking it and hence peace will be preserved.
Many governments do not like to be engaged in warfare or receive their soldiers in a black bag. Many
families would prefer loved ones alive and not dead after a war. Even so, all countries in the world
take actions to prepare their military forces to be ready in case they are needed. In recent wars, the use
of technology has been one of the most important means to obtain the advantage over the enemy.
Therefore, electronic warfare, as part of modern warfare, has become not only a concept but an
effective tool to reinforce combatant soldiers on the ground. The control of the electromagnetic
spectrum has now a significant role in military forces having an advantage over the enemy. Electronic
attack, electronic protection and electronic warfare support are elements of electronic warfare.
An electronic attack is the employment of energy to localize, interfere and destroy enemy assets,
Department of the Army (2009). New weapons usually demand the use of a small segment of the
electromagnetic spectrum, that is called the frequency at which every weapon works. If the frequency
of a particular weapon (radar, radios, air defense batteries, etc.) is localized, then that particular
weapon can be intercepted and destroyed. The more enemy weapons

Shawshank Redemption Corrections
The 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont, presents a complex and
brutal prison environment for both its guards and inmates. Andy Dufresne, an inmate who is wrongly
convicted of murder, is faced with several facets of the grim and isolated nature of Shawshank
penitentiary. Throughout the film, several correctional concepts are illustrated that present inimitable
challenges for both Dufresne as well as other inmates in the prison. The major correctional concepts
that shaped the inmates prison experiences include: prison economy, prisonization and
institutionalization, adaptive roles, and prison violence. Together, these concepts provide the
multifaceted foundation of the prison environment in the film as well as depict current correctional
concepts that are present in America s prisons. The prison economy plays an important role for ...

An adaptive role is described as how inmates become accustomed to prison (283). The four
fundamental roles that an inmate can embrace include: doing time, gleaning, jailing, or becoming a
disorganized criminal. (283) Upon arriving to Shawshank, Tommy Williams learns that Dufresne had
been helping other inmates to pass their General Educational Development tests. He convinces
Dufresne that he is committed to studying for the tests and ultimately passes with a C+ average.
Williams took advantage of the educational resources that were available to him in hopes of bettering
his situation once he was released. By doing so, he had been gleaning. (283) In addition to adaptive
roles, the film also portrays many instances and forms of prison violence. Prisons provide all of the
necessary conditions to host violence (288). The film depicts instances of prisoner prisoner violence in
the form of sexual victimization, prison gangs, and illicit violence by officers against

perspective of how life was like growing up for a 10 year old African American girl by the name of
Myop. The title of the story is The Flowers. When you think about flowers, you instantly compare
them to being beautiful, pure, and innocent. The title of the The Flowers is a symbolism that correlates
to Myop who is the protagonist of the story. Myop is just like a flower in the beginning of the story.

automatic trait that we, as humans carry; go back to a place where you feel protected. As Myop is on
her way back home, she stepped smack onto his eyes (Walker, 76.) Myop stumbled upon a dead man s
body but she isn t afraid of the body, she s more startled and confused at the sighting. She still hasn t
yet quite understood what she was actually seeing because she decides to get closer to pick up a wild
pink rose that was near the head of the corpse. Myop deciding to pick up the wild pink rose despite her
seeing the man s body still shows that she still has her innocence and how she doesn t quite fully
understand what was going on. That quickly changes when she sees the rotted remains of a noose
(Walker 77.) When Myop discovered the noose, she realized what had happened. Myop realized that
this man was lynched. It all made sense now. From Myop seeing the man s broken and cracked teeth

McPherson and Hearn on Abraham Lincoln Essay
The presidency of Abraham Lincoln came during a highly radical and chaotic period of American
history. For historians such as James McPherson, they see Lincoln as the greatest leader in American
history. For McPherson, Lincoln succeeded in combining military pragmatism with the political
ideologies of the North, as well as Lincoln s own idealism, thus assuring Northern victory. However,
not all historians agree that Lincoln was a masterful tactician. Chester Hearn, believes that although
Abraham Lincoln was one of America s most venerable statesmen, his presidency was marked by
flaws and a general misunderstanding of how war is waged. McPherson s Tried by War and Hearn s
Lincoln, The Cabinet and the Generals, make the argument for each of ... Show more content on

Although Hearn does not entirely refute the commonly view of Lincoln as a brilliant tactician and
morally inspired leader, he also provides many examples of Lincoln s failures. Many of the policies,
which McPherson celebrates, Hearn depicts as misguided and desperate.
Although James McPherson presents Lincoln as having numerous qualities that defined him as a
brilliant leader, he wastes no time in revealing what he believes to be Lincoln s greatest strength. In
his Introduction, McPherson states regarding Lincoln s political leadership: In a civil war whose
origins lay in a political conflict over the future of slavery and a political decision by certain states to
secede, policy could never be separated from national strategy.... And neither policy nor national
strategy could be separated from military strategy (McPherson, p.6). Lincoln could not approach the
war from a purely martial standpoint instead, he needed to focus on the issues that caused it. For the
catalyst of the war was also the tool for its solution; a war started by differing ideologies could only be
resolved through the military application of ideology. This non objective approach to the waging of
the war almost resembles the inspired approach McPherson brings to his examination of Lincoln
himself.
For Hearn, Lincoln s true level of tactical skill is hard to discern due to the legendary status that
history has given him. In response to this confusion, Hearn

  • 2. Compromise of 1850 At the time of the creation of the Constitution, the issue of slavery had been put off and avoided, a decision that would later lead to the controversy now known as the American Civil War. The composition, which was once the solution to problems that the Union was having, had the opposite effect in the 1850s, when arguments and different interpretations of the Constitution resulted in sectionalism, threat of secession, and tension between the North and the South. Abolitionists in the North tried to preserve the Union while abolishing slavery, while southerners supported slavery in the new territory and threatened to secede; the Compromise of 1850, especially the Fugitive Slave Law, increased these beliefs. The Compromise of 1850 brought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This man also believed in popular sovereignty, meaning the people should choose whether or not they want to spread it. This account contradicts Document E and Emerson s views. The government was unable to come to a compromise so that both sides would be satisfied, hence the sectionalism. The Constitution s lack of mentioning slavery and the misinterpretations of it made it become a source of sectional discord rather than an instrument of national unity. President James Buchanan was known to favor the south, which is evident in his fourth annual message to Congress in 1860, as seen in Document G. President Buchanan deals with the fact that the states were sovereign, therefore having the right to manage slavery in their own way. He also states that the states, particularly the South, had the right to resist the government if all peaceful measures to restore unity did not work. He also makes the point that Congress is by no means of the Constitution given the power to use force against the states to prevent secession. He suggests three amendments that elucidate the protection of slavery and that could help avoid sectionalism within the Union. Poor political decisions contributed the fail of the Union along with the Constitution. One that would fall under this category is the Kansas Nebraska ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a day to day experience and everyday news in our society. It is the third leading cause of death within today s youth (Collegian). Their dependence on the road to move goods and obtain food from place to place. Brueghel s painting still hold true today because people depend on roads for interaction and movement of goods. • 8. Conflict Between Men And Women Conflict between men and women Trifles is a short story that Susan Glaspell wrote about between men and women. It s specifically targeting the way men attitudes were towards women. Trifles talks about a murder that is unsolved, a country woman suspected of killing her husband in an isolated farm. Men in this short story worry more about looking for big evidence and judging about Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen instead of looking in her stuff for evidence. The men think that in the kitchen there is nothing important. Instead they go to the barn and to the bedroom to find evidence. Meanwhile the women find a dead bird with a broken neck that could mean why she killed Mr. Wright. At the end the women decide to hide the evidence. That is because they think she had her own reasons to kill him because Mr. Wright could have killed the bird and that it was important to Mrs. Wright. In Trifles there is a conflict between the masculine attitudes towards women. Men in Trifles are judgmental when they see Mrs. Wright s messy kitchen. They think that Mrs. Wright should have cleaned up the kitchen before she left. The County Attorney thinks that a woman s place is in the kitchen and that she should have everything cleaned up. When the County Attorney is looking around the kitchen he opens the door of a closet and looks on the top shelf. Then he pulls his hand away sticky and says, Here s a nice mess (1388), criticizing Mrs. Wright s kitchen. He pulls out a roll of towels ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Examples Of Queer Theory In The Great Gatsby Ryann Alyssa Peebles November 8, 2017 Literally Analysis Paper Ernie Abyetia ENGL100A_FA_2017 Queer theory is a post structuralist theory that emerged in the early 1990s from the fields of queer and women s studies. The theory builds on both feminist challenges to the idea that gender is part of the essential self and upon gay and lesbian studies close examination of the socially constructed nature of sexual activity and identities. This theory focuses on the mismatches between sex, gender, and desire. Queerness has been prominently identified as bisexual, lesbian, and gay people, although it also includes different categories such as cross dressing, intersex bodies and identities, gender ambiguity and gender corrective surgery. The queer theory is an attempt to expose the different lifestyles that people may be unaware of and to give them several categories in the LGBTQ community to look at; correlates sexes, genders, and sexualities out of specifically lesbian and gay. One of these examples of queer analysis is in F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby. The narrative progression in the novel is stationed around Jay Gatsby s deep love for Daisy Fay Buchanan and the three overlapping heterosexual love triangles: Gatsby Daisy Tom, Tom Myrtle George, Myrtle Tom Daisy. This heterosexual plot is indeed shadowed by a homoerotic subtext but with all the twists and turns of the novel. This Amendment has accounted for many vigorous debates over the nature of its content. This has led for gun control to become an extremely controversial area of American politics. It is primarily defined by two different groups, those supporting gun control and those supporting gun rights. These groups often disagree on the interpretation of laws and court cases related to firearms. Even more so, they disagree about the effects of gun control on crime and the overall safety of the public. It is clearly in the interests, of all Americans, to reduce gun violence in the country. Also, statistics show homes containing a firearm are twenty two times more likely to be used to kill or injure in a domestic homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting than to be used in self defense. Since the 1990s, debates regarding firearm availability and gun violence in the United States have been characterized by concerns about the right to bear arms. Gun control supporters believe broad, unrestricted gun rights inhibit the government from fulfilling their responsibility to protect the safety of the public. Also, these advocates state keeping guns out of the hands of criminals results in safer communities. Gun rights supporters promote firearms for self defense, hunting, sporting activities, and security against tyranny. Gun rights advocates also believe firearm ownership by law abiding citizens reduces crime. However, many of these beliefs are based on nonfactual evidence and, in fact, are quite false. Perhaps, one of the greatest myths believed today by this debate is attempts to ban the possession of handguns, or certain kinds of guns, are a viable option for reducing crime. It has often been proposed more guns mean more deaths and therefore, fewer guns would equate to fewer deaths. Unfortunately, these thoughts are all too often ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When it was calculated, the reaction between the Copper and Magnesium in theory had a potential difference of 2.58v. The Copper and Zinc reaction was also calculated to have the expected potential difference of 1.1v whilst the Copper and Lead had 0.7v. When looking at the half equations of the various reactions, the electron transfer direction can be gathered. The place of oxidation is the side which loses electrons and the place of reduction, which gains them. Therefore, it can be determined that the electron flow direction is from the anodes [ which are Zinc, Magnesium, and Lead], the oxidization agents, to the Copper cathode, the reduction agent. ... The occurrence of these inaccuracies may have been due to random errors such as the sizes of the filter paper and meta strips, inaccurate measurements of the solutions, weight of the metal strips. In addition, the introduction of systematic errors may have also increased the inaccuracies in the results. Some systematic errors which occurred were: not sanding any of the metal strips as well as not having a specified amount of time for soaking the filter paper. These errors both random and systematic may have been minimised or highlighted through conducting various repetitions of the practical investigation so that results can be averaged to be more accurate and for more definitive conclusions to be ... Two Revolutions, two Generals, on two Continents. Bonaparte and Washington fought for equality, freedom, and fraternity for their homelands. This essay will compare and contrast Napoleon Bonaparte and George Washington by their education, most significant battle, and achievements. The question is, was Napoleon Bonaparte a dictator, or one of the most remarkable military strategist? Opinions are diverse about the man who crowned himself as an Emperor. In fact, this explains Napoleon s words when he said: Circumstances what are circumstances? I make circumstances (Biography/Online). On the other hand, George Washington the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army was the first President of the United States of America (The White House), who said, If we mean to support the liberty and independence which have cost us so much blood and treasure to establish, we must drive far away the demon of party spirit and local reproach George Washington. • 21. Reflection Paper On Painting Before you even start painting you have to decide what type of material you will be painting on. In modern days you will most likely land on paper as the material you choose to paint on. After choosing to paint on paper you should decide on what type of paint to use. The artist s painting, I am looking at choose to use watercolor paints on a watercolor paper. Apparently watercolor paper is made with linters or cotton rags unlike how printer paper is made. Cotton rags are supposedly stronger than wood fibers or linters, as a result the paper is relatively strong. An additional advantage to using cotton rages is it makes the paper flexible, therefor less likely to rip. If you use older pieces of cotton rages you would be recycling, which I consider is another advantage. I assume that the artist used watercolor paper that was made a similar way, but I don t know for sure. Once you choose the material and paint you are using you might start thinking about what you re going to paint and how to make it look the way you want it to. One way to make your paintings look like how you want is using visual elements. There are several types of visual elements an artist can use, including line and color. For the painting I am analyzing the artist ended up using the elements value, and texture mostly. The element value refers to the lightness or darkness of a color. Green has a variety of different values, and the artist utilizes these different values in his watercolor painting. For the tree leaves, he has a darker green closer to the center of the tree, then a light color or value of green as the leaves branch out farther away from the center of the tree. As he painted the grass, he made it a different value of green than the trees. I believe that the artist used different values of green to represent different implied textures. However, since he used values of the same color all the green items in the painting seemed to belong together. As a result of the different greens there doesn t seem too be one color that sticks out the most, they all seem to be in harmony. Even though value is very evident in the painting, texture is also used considerably in this painting. It is used in the grass, tree leaves, and even the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Susan Griffin The Banking Concept Of Education Analysis Rigid top down cultures exist over the course of history and throughout the world. These cultures have been seen in World War II Germany and in education in Brazil. It has been shown throughout history that these cultures can and will cause many problems to fester as a result. These issues include the manufacturing of sheep like masses that simply follow what they are told and taught, the culture losing its ability to distinguish between what is morally right and wrong, and the forced masking of emotions and true feelings. The only way to prevent a culture from simply manufacturing sheep like masses is by encouraging people to not be afraid to stand out in a crowd and allowing, and even embracing, free thinking. In Our Story by Susan Griffin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe this can be done through two main ideas. The first, which can be seen in Griffin s writing is to instill the idea that it is not a bad thing to stand out in a crowd. The second is by encouraging free thinking and learning as Freire helps to call to mind through his writings on the education system. The way people act today is not always who they are. People act in a way that they think is normal and the way that they think they are expected to be. This normalization is essentially brainwashing in and of itself and this automatically creates the people that do not know how to do anything but follow authority. When people are not worried about standing out in the crowd, then they are able to think freely and for themselves, rather than for the oppressive people above them. This is the first step in breaking the structure of the rigid top down society. The second step is encouraging free thinking. Free thinking is one of the greatest way to overcome the rigid top down society model because when you allow people to freely think and express themselves you cannot have oppression by radical leaders who choose to implement ideas and plans that do not follow the moral code of the people. The free thinkers can create doubt throughout society and opens the door for others to think for themselves creating a large group of people who can think for themselves and decide whether the ... Ammons was interested in the sciences but also held a love for literature. He liked to involve nature in his work. Easter Morning is very abstract, has tropes that further the images presented, and is not confined to form. The perception of human ambiguities and abstract possibilities in homely bits of nature may have originated in Robert Frost. (N.A. 288) His work like most other authors of his time is influenced by others like Robert Frost and William Carlos Williams. This poem is heavily influenced by Robert Frost. Frost likes to create poetry that helps you bring some meaning out of a situation presented in nature. For close inspection, the form, sentence structures, and syntax are a highlight of what he wants to convey to the reader. Easter Morning is in written free verse and divided into verse paragraphs. (enotes.com) Along with the other literary figures of his time that have an influence on his work, this poem is truly free verse. It doesn t have any syllabic pattern, or run on sentences. The syntax is very clear, coherent. It is almost childlike in its simplicity. This adds to the overall feeling Ammons wants to convey to the reader. The sentence structure is very precise. He leaves some words all alone that are to cause a break in the reading. They also leave the reader thinking why he did that. ...all in the graveyard assembled, done for, ... This means if a nation is well armed, other nations will be wary of attacking it and hence peace will be preserved. Many governments do not like to be engaged in warfare or receive their soldiers in a black bag. Many families would prefer loved ones alive and not dead after a war. Even so, all countries in the world take actions to prepare their military forces to be ready in case they are needed. In recent wars, the use of technology has been one of the most important means to obtain the advantage over the enemy. Therefore, electronic warfare, as part of modern warfare, has become not only a concept but an effective tool to reinforce combatant soldiers on the ground. The control of the electromagnetic spectrum has now a significant role in military forces having an advantage over the enemy. Electronic attack, electronic protection and electronic warfare support are elements of electronic warfare. An electronic attack is the employment of energy to localize, interfere and destroy enemy assets, Department of the Army (2009). New weapons usually demand the use of a small segment of the electromagnetic spectrum, that is called the frequency at which every weapon works.
