Voter Knocking
I asked a young campaign canvasser early on a Saturday morning, What makes you get up early on a
Saturday morning, when you could be sleeping, and door knock for a Presidential candidate for free?
He replied the free donuts and coffee. I laughed, knowing that he had a good point, as I nibbled on my
jelly filled donut. I had experienced this same phenomenon canvassing for a Congressional candidate.
The only difference was I went for the free pizza and drinks, instead of donuts and coffee.
On Saturday, October 29th I was able to shadow the Republican Party of Virginia Beach as they door
knocked for Presidential candidate Donald Trump. I was interested to see what type of door knocking
strategy they would employ over the course of the day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The voters that were targeted were low propensity Republican voters.. The way that these voters were
identified was through voter history, technology that shows which elections you voted in and how
often you voted. We know targeting these voters is an effective strategy to increase voter turnout on
election day. Research conducted by Author Alan S. Gerber and Professor Donald P. Green show how
crucial this face to face interaction could be to getting Republicans who normally don t vote to vote. In
their article, The Effects of Canvassing, Telephone Calls, and Direct Mail on Voter Turnout: A Field
Experiment they concluded that Face to face interaction dramatically increases the chance that voters
will go to the polls. (Gerber and Green, 2010) Talking to these voters face to face in their community
had a positive effect in which Republicans who were not going to vote, will now vote on election day.
After compiling the data, walkbooks were created with these specific low propensity Republican
households shown in the walkbook. About one hundred houses were comprised in one walkbook. All

How Did Germany Lose Ww2
In the beginning of World War II, Germany seemed to be on a path to dominating Europe. Our world
could be vastly different politically, technologically, and socially if this had happened, but it didn t.
Why is this? While Germany led many campaigns during World War II, it seems like one caused it to
lose the war: Germany s loss of North Africa in 1943 eventually led to its downfall. This is because
the North African failure was a massive loss of resources and morale and because it gave the Allies a
geographic advantage. It started Germany on a slow decline that lasted until it finally surrendered in
1945. One of the primary reasons the North African campaign was so damaging was because of the
resources lost by its failure. The Germans lost thousands of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The largest of these was access to the Mediterranean and Italy. Up until this point, routes of delivery
[from the Allies to the USSR] were long, roundabout, and difficult because the Mediterranean and the
Baltic were closed to Allied cargo vessels. (Greenfield, 228) Now, using ports and outposts in Africa,
the Mediterranean was open and the USSR could get the reinforcements it needed to begin its fatal
push into Germany. At the same time, Britain and the US were able to begin the Italian campaign,
overthrowing one of Germany s main allies and supporters and beginning their own push into
Germany. Losing control of Africa provided the Allies with a strategic advantage that Germany didn t
have the resources to cope with. Throughout the second World War, Germany was involved in
campaigns across the world, from Europe to the Pacific to Asia. One of the most influential was the
one in North Africa. The North African campaign began the decline of Germany in World War II
because its failure brought with it large losses of resources, morale, and strategic

accomplish the organization goals. This is where a mission statement becomes useful. A mission

Ultimately, Hyatt and Marriott do not seem to be heading in the same direction, and due to the

Activities In the business world, social responsibility refers to accountability. There is the
accountability of the company to itself, and to the communities where they have a presence.
Especially when a business is as large and far reaching as Marriott, they have a responsibility to give
back and help to improve society. It is also believed that by engaging in socially responsible activities,
the company will improve its image and increase profit. Marriott has done a great job of participating
in a diversified collection of charitable initiatives, events, and organizations. Their main area of focus

Reaction Paper On Jurisprudence
Introduction: To understand the topic of philosophy of law first we have to understand what is law?
Law is nothing but a group or collection of some rules that regulates and control society or country.
Every country has different rules and laws. Like in India we drive a vehicle on the left side of the road
but in America we drive a vehicle on the right side of the road. There are also some international laws
like if you do any bad thing then you will be punished. Laws control human behaviours. They restrict
human to do bad things. Law is also important for equality, justice and fairness.
Now we have developed some sense about what is law? Now look about the philosophy of law. What
is philosophy of law? Philosophy of law basically is a branch ... Show more content on

What is jurisprudence?
Jurisprudence:
Jurisprudence is the study of law. Scholars in jurisprudence try to obtain a deeper understanding of
laws of nature, legal laws and legal institutions. Jurisprudence tries to seek, analyze, explain and
classify the entire body of law. Jurisprudence is the science or philosophy of law. Jurisprudence
creates a body of law, methods for interpreting the law, studies the relationship between law and
society, predicts the effect of legal decisions. We can divide jurisprudence into two parts: (i) analytic
jurisprudence and (ii) normative jurisprudence.
Analytic jurisprudence:
Analytic jurisprudence is the branch of the legal philosophy. The principal objective of analytic
jurisprudence is to find the reasons that are differentiates laws as a system of norms from the other
system of norms as ethical norms. It provides sufficient conditions that distinguish law from the non
law. It attempts to analyze the laws and legal systems. Analytic jurisprudence is a legal theory that
tries to understand the laws of nature. It deals about the basic questions of law. Like what is a law?
What are laws? What is the relationship between law and power? What is the relationship between law
and morality? There are three theories of law that fall under analytic jurisprudence (i) natural law
theory, (ii) legal positivism and (iii) Ronald dworkin s

Scarlet Letter Rhetorical Analysis
To depict Hester Prynne s inner turmoil, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many different types of rhetorical
devices, such as pathos, simile, and metaphor. He also uses an abundance amount of syntax, irony and
tone. Hawthorne uses metaphors and similes often in chapter five, to exaggerate Hester s chaos inside.
The arrangement of words and phrases Hawthorne uses makes the reader think and try to understand
Hester s tension. Hawthorne describes that Hester feels like the chain that bound her here was of iron
links, and galling to her inmost soul. This doesn t mean that she is bound by actual chains, but instead
it means that she feels as if she is stuck in Boston, and ends up staying in a cottage on the outskirts of
the town. He then continues with, although she hid the secret from herself, and grew pale whenever it
struggled out of her heart, like a serpent from its home. In these statements Hawthorne is using the
metaphor and simile to give the reader a view into Hester s inner turmoil. ... Show more content on

He describes that, the very law that condemned her....had held her up through the terrible ordeal of her
ignominy. This makes zero sense, how could something, or someone, that convicted you, hold you up
through your trials? Hawthorne uses this to give the reader a look into the depth of Hester s thoughts.
Later Hawthorne writes that, her needlework was seen on the ruff of the Governor; military men wore
it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked baby s little cap; it was shut up, to be
mildewed and molder away, in the coffins of the dead. There s irony in this statement, because before
this Hawthorne points out that as Hester walks out of the prison she thinks to herself how she would
become the general symbol at which the preacher and moralist might point, and in which they might
vivify and embody their images of woman s frailty and sinful

Tax Benefits Of The Tax
Under the tax law, certain tax benefits can significantly reduce a taxpayer s regular tax amount. The
alternative minimum tax (AMT) applies to taxpayers with high income by setting a limit on those
benefits. It helps to ensure that those taxpayers pay at least a minimum amount of tax. The AMT is the
excess of the tentative minimum tax over the regular tax. Therefore, the AMT is owed only if the
tentative minimum tax is greater than the regular tax. The tentative minimum tax is figured separately
from the regular tax. In general, compute the tentative minimum tax by:
1. Computing taxable income eliminating or reducing certain exclusions and deductions, and taking
into account differences with respect to when certain items are taken into account in computing
regular taxable income and alternative minimum taxable income (AMTI)
2. Subtracting the AMT exemption amount
3. Multiplying the amount computed in (2) by the appropriate AMT tax rates
4. Subtracting the AMT foreign tax credit (IRS.gov, 2016) (p. 1)
The federal tax law sets the AMT exemption amounts and AMT tax rates. Taxpayers can use the
special capital gain rates in effect for the regular tax if they are lower than the AMT tax rates that
would otherwise apply. Some tax credits that reduce regular tax liability do not reduce AMT tax
liability. If a taxpayer is not liable for AMT this year, but he or she paid AMT in one or more previous
years, they may be eligible to take a special minimum tax credit against their

Representation Of Women In The Media Analysis
We live in an ageist society, which favours youth. Because of this, celebrities age is inherent in the
discourses (Van den Bulck, 2014, p. 63) about their persona and appearance. This is especially true of
female celebrities who come under constant scrutiny because our patriarchal society means that there
are different standards for men s and women s aging (Oberg, 2003, p. 126). MailOnline provides
perfect examples of older women s representations in the media demonstrating the public obsession
with youthfulness and that older female celebrities are rarely represented, but when they are, they are
usually shown as desexualised and unattractive. There are some exceptions, for example the
newspaper s focus on Helen Mirren; however, sexy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
162). MailOnline probably only depicts Mirren as attractive as she is a blonde beauty with a nicely
toned body (Chester Smith, 2015). Sontag states, what makes these women seem beautiful to us is
precisely that they do not look their real age (1972, p. 36). In this way, these apparently positive
representations of older women are still just as bad for shaming women s aged bodies as they starkly
remind the audience that the sustainability of sexual attractiveness is one of the most highly valued
personal commodities in the media market (Garde Hansen, 2012, pp. 161 162). Overall, aging women
tend to be inadequately represented in the media for the reason that these women bear the brunt of
ageism because they are already devalued as female (Cruikshank, 2009, p. 143). Additionally, because
the patriarchy s ideal state for women is docility (Sontag, 1972, p. 38), beauty standards and practices
will continue to be enforced helping to shame any appearance that differs from what society deems
beautiful. Traditionally, this idea of beauty almost always excludes the body fat, wrinkles, and grey
hair typically found on older

how to create a realistic outline of necessary treatment. The plan must both protect your interests and

where people beach pay him to see his birds perform tricks. Don Justo is a lonely man but he has a
story. He had two wives and five children, including Justina, his first, and Ernestina, his fifth.
Suddenly he receives a telegraph; he suspects it is bad news but he cannot read. He hopes the
telegraph is from Justina saying all is forgiven. So as he walks on the beach as usual, he finds a girl
named Rita and asks her to pick her fortune. Don Justo asks the guy next to her to read him the

An Important Aspect Of Purchasing And Selling Goods Whether
An important aspect of purchasing and selling goods whether for trade or personal reasons is to
understand who bears the burden of damage to the goods. This is of great importance, but often
overlooked, determining when risk has passed from one party to the next establishes whether the seller
may still recover the full price of the damaged goods and the buyer be left with damaged goods or not.
In this short note we will briefly look at the consequences of not dealing with these issues in your
contract as well as some brief thoughts on how this may be avoided. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY
RISK PASSING AND WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN? When we talk of the risk passing to the buyer
what is referred to is the burden of having to deal with the damaged goods. ... Show more content on
Helpwriting.net ...
As such, in these types of contracts the risk does not pass until the goods described in the contract are
appropriated to the contract. That is, when the seller has set aside a specific 10 tonnes of maize to be
bought by the buyer. Until the product has been appropriated to the contract the seller is liable to
replace the goods before they are entitled to the purchase price, once they have been appropriated or
distinguished the risk for damage passes to the buyer. What if the sale is subject to a condition? For
example suppose that the contract of sale for a buffalo was made conditional on the buffalo being
tested for, and being found free of, any disease (the sale is suspended until the buffalo is found to be
disease free) and the buffalo dies before this can be determined. In situations like this the risk does not
pass to the buyer until the condition has been fulfilled. On fulfilment of the condition the risk becomes
the buyers from the date of conclusion of the sale. In the above scenario the risk has not yet passed to
the buyer therefore the seller bears the risk of the buffalo dying or being injured. The buyer does not
have to pay the price even when it is later determined that the buffalo was disease free. If the buffalo
had been injured or died after the condition was fulfilled (the vet finding that the buffalo was

Star Formation Research Paper
Stars
Introduction
Those stars in the night sky seem small and tiny, but up close they would be millions of times larger
than the Earth. Stars are the most recognized astronomical objects and are the building blocks of the
galaxies. These luminous spheres made of plasma are responsible for the creation of heavy elements
like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. They were among the first objects in the early universe. Most of the
elements found in the human body originated in stars, this means that we are literally made of stardust.
When you are staring at stars from the night sky, you are actually looking back in time, the light you
see could be from a million years ago. The study of the birth, life and death of stars are the central
field of astronomy today.

when this happens the resulting black hole is known as a Binary Black Hole. The energy emitted from
the collision would be so great it would send ripples through the space time fabric of the Universe.

A Reflection On The Life Of Hereworth Church
It is something of a challenge to write a reflection on the life of the chapel through 2017 when I have
only been there for a small part of it. Suffice it to say that the past year has been one of change and
transition for the role of Chaplain at Hereworth School, and for the life of the chapel. With Reverend
Rosemary Carey s departure at the end of Term Two, the life of the chapel was placed in the hands of
the teaching staff for Term Three, with valiant efforts to continue the spiritual dimension of the school.
While no doubt the experience was enjoyed by staff and students alike, the words uttered to me by one
staff member as I left my first chapel service, Thank God you re here , suggest there is an appreciation
for the unique challenges of the role.
These challenges are what I have been discovering as I have gone, very quickly, through our final term
of 2017. While there are definitely similarities to the parish ministry I was engaged in prior to joining
Hereworth, there are also distinct differences the demographic being a major part of that difference.
How do we translate the great power and truth of our Christian faith into language and practices that
are intelligible and formative for young boys? What are the tools and resources of our faith that not
only form our heritage but the character of those who come under their tutelage? What is it that the
spiritual life of Hereworth School can provide to our boys and our communities that make it
indispensable,

Democracy in Singapore
2. Is there democracy in Singapore?
What is Democracy?
Singapore has been recognized as a representative democratic state since August 1965. However, to
examine if Singapore is in fact democratic, we need to first define the word democracy and its
parameters. The word originated from M.Fr democratis in the 1570s, with demo referring to common
people and cratie to rule of strength. Therefore, by definition, Singapore can be classified as a
democratic country due to the fair elections which enable her people to choose their government.
Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from
time to time , Churchill words immortalize democracy as the way to go, but there is not one ... Show

Further, the time period between each General Election in Singapore is also relatively longer than the
other democratic states, such as the Unite States, where elections are held consistently every four
years. The announcement of the election dates are also only released just before the election itself.
This inflexibility in the political system is detrimental to the opposition parties and also place severe
restrictions on the citizens in terms of their rights to decide when to have an election.
Chief reasons for the PAP s continued dominance
The PAP s ability to maintain its hegemony till date can be attributed to two main reasons, firstly, the
PAP has been introducing schemes in the electorate system to suppress the opposition and secondly,
the PAP s control over the grassroots organizations have established the required link between itself
and the citizens.
Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP)
As mentioned earlier, the NMP scheme has been employed by the PAP to function as an institution to
prevent potential opposition by taking the talented and qualified individual inside their ranks, thus
greatly limiting the pool of talent for the opposition right from the onset. Quoting Bilver Singh, by
bringing these talents into the political system in a safe and non threatening manner, the PAP is
effectively denying the oppositional forces the possibility of recruiting these talents into their ranks.

Nonconformism In Manuel Puigan s Kiss Of Spider Woman
In a society governed by straight, cis gender men, the nonconformists have been pushed to the side
and hidden from view. Ashamed by their anomalies, these men have released heteronormative,
patriarchal media to create a conformist society and to label any outsider as strange or other. Although
media about the marginalized exists, they are few and far in between, leaving them to appropriate
other forms of expression. In Manuel Puig s Kiss of Spider Woman, Molina, an effeminate gay man,
recounts the storyline of Jacques Tourner s film, Cat People, through a queer perspective. By
identifying with a nonhuman figure and distorting a heteronormative plotline, Molina recognizes the
animality, or otherness, within himself due to his nonconforming nature. In Molina s narration of
Tourner s film, he often shows admiration towards Irena, a cat person. When introducing her to
Valentín, he expresses that she is not a woman like all the others, indicating her otherness yet
romanticizing her at the same time (Puig 3). She is unlike other women not only because she s non
human but also the heroine (25). This idolization is, furthermore, seen when he bids his cellmate
goodnight. Sweet dreams of Irena, he says, elevating her into an ethereal figure (9). Therefore, Molina
s reverence leads him to place himself in Irena s shoes. Like Irena, he is fond of Oliver because he s
the gentle type, and understanding (17); yet, he loathes the psychiatrist because so does [she],
revealing that his feelings towards the characters are dependent on hers (20). In other instances,
Molina seems to know what Irena is thinking and feeling although the film does not delve into her
mind. He explains how, when seeing Oliver, she [had] such a strong desire to kiss him, on the mouth
(21). Yet, in the film, the viewer is unable to truly know her desires unless they are explicitly said. So,
Molina has assumed her character mentally and emotionally.
However, Molina s identification with Irena is evident in the encounter with the other foreign woman.
In his narration, he explains this scene almost precisely as it is in the film. The only difference is that
Molina can provides a translation for the woman s line. According to

Sheila Mant Quotes
I have read the short story Sheila Mant by W.D. Wetherell. In this story a fourteen year old boy likes a
girl and asks her to go to a concert with him. He takes her there on a canoe and encounters a dilemma
when he has to choose between Sheila and the bass. In this journal, I will be predicting whether the
boy will chose Sheila or the bass.
G: Throughout the short story Sheila Mant, the boy must decide between the bass and Sheila. Y:

The boy knows all about largemouth bass, even their scientific name. He also has all the name brand
equipment for fishing such as Pflueger and Rapala. The name brand equipment is important because it
must mean he is extremely committed to fishing. The last reason he might choose the bass is because
he is extremely dedicated to fishing. As the text states, I say automatically, because I never went
anywhere that summer without a fishing rod (Wetherell 2). The boy was constantly fishing or
practicing his casts. Fishing was not something he had to think about, it was just instinct to grab his
rod anytime he went somewhere. Fishing for bass is tremendously automatic for the boy. Secondly,
the other decision the boy might make is to pick Sheila. He might select Sheila because he creeps on
her constantly. As explained in the story, I had learned all her moods. If she lay flat on the diving
board...Sitting up, arms tucked around her long, suntanned legs, she was approachable (Wetherell 1).
The boy was regularly creeping on Sheila and learning all her poses. He would try to spy on her
parties. He might pick

Peggy McIntosh s White Privilege And Male Privilege Essay
Privileges are things that a person receives that gives them an advantage over most people (Merriam
Webster). These are benefits that only certain people receive for being in a certain group or discourse.
Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote White
Privilege and Male Privilege and states I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white
privileges, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege (605). She argues that whites and males
receive certain privileges, yet they do not even notice them. This shows that different races and
women are still put at a disadvantage, but the people who receive the benefits are blind to the problem.
Many people will argue that she is correct ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also shelter it by keeping it a secret from their own so they never see it as an advantage. Shannon
Sullivan wrote the book Revealing Whiteness: The Unconscious Habits of Racial Privilege . She does
agree with McIntosh that whites do in fact receive these hidden privileges. In her book she wrote
Blithely wrapped up in a white world, white people often do not see their own ignorance and cannot
be faulted for not addressing it... (18). Sullivan explains that white people do not realize that they are
receiving these certain benefits for just being white. They also can t fix this problem until they realize
that they are privileged. The privileges that they receive are mainly social benefits, which probably
why they are hard to see. McIntosh give an example by saying, I can go shopping alone most of the
time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed (607). This is one of the many over
looked privileges that people don t seem to notice. In the book White Teachers/Diverse Classrooms ,
written by Landsman, Julie, and Lewis, they also support this idea by giving an example of this certain
privilege not applying to a person of color, even to the president of Brown University, Ruth Simmons.
Simmons was followed and question as she walk the aisles of a major department store (11). Despite
the fact that she was president of Brown University, she was stilled harassed at clothing store

Beethoven and the Classical and Romantic Periods Essay
Out of all of Beethoven s one hundred and ten works, he wrote thirty two piano sonatas. Of those
thirty two piano sonatas, the thirty first piano sonata was one of the most important and was composed
in the year 1821towards the end of Beethoven s life. It is one of Ludwig van Beethoven s final sonatas
for the piano, given the full name: Piano Sonata No. 31 in A flat major, op. 110. I am writing about a
video performance found on YouTube by Richard Goode in 1993. The performance piece is a sonata
which is defined by Kerman as a chamber music piece in several movements (Kerman, 427) The thirty
first sonata came to be in an interesting way. Moritz Schlesinger, in the summer of 1819, had made a
request to Ludwig van Beethoven. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second movement launches itself at 6:48 in the video. Like the end of the first movement, the
second movement is loud. It is sudden and very, very noticeable. The second movement is also
marked allegro because of the quick, lively tempo that it has. Anyone should be able to easily tell
when the first movement transitions into the second movement. The third movement begins at 8:55
within the video. The third movement is an orderly part of the piece in which two slow sections of
arioso and two fast fugues alternate with one another. This movement begins with an arioso, and you
can tell because the beginning of it is quite slow especially when compared to the fast pace ending of
the second movement.
This sonata is based on two motifs, both of which you can find within the first movement. According
to author Charles Rosen, these two motifs are ascending or descending parallel fourths, and rising or
falling sixths in scale motion (Rosen, 235). The most noticeable of these motifs in the sonata are in the
recapitulation of the first movement and in the opening of the second movement which is expressed
with a six note falling scale motif. The ascending or descending parallel fourth motifs are present in
the main themes of the first movement and the fugue and in the popular theme of the scherzo. The
motifs of the rising sixths can be found in the first movement. The descending motifs which are

Canada In The 1950 s And 1960s
The 1950s and 1960s were widely recognized as the second Golden Age after the 1920s. However, it
is questioned whether it really was a period of growth and stability for all the citizens of Canada.
Many French Canadians have brought up the question about if their rights and needs were properly
recognized by Canada during this time period. The needs of French Canadians were met to an extent
by Canada in the 1950s and 1960s because of the inclusion of their culture, the economic standing of
French Canadians, and the unification of Canada as a country.
First, the cultural needs of French Canadian citizens were recognized and worked towards in an effort
to sustain their culture. Canada included the language aspect of French Canadian culture ... Show

Through creating an accepting, unified nation, French Canadians were both more included and
accepted in the country. The introduction of the Canadian flag in the 1960s presented a new view on
French Canadian equality in Canada. Past Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson wanted to create a
national flag for Canada that could act as a unifying force of the country, leading to the creation of the
Maple Leaf flag, which is still used to represent Canada as a whole today. With this request which was
granted by Parliament in 1964 and by Queen Elizabeth II in 1965, French Canadians became a more
unified group along with the rest of Canada due to this new symbol of the country that represented all
of its citizens as a whole instead of only clusters of them. Moreover, unity in Canada was improved
through the Medical Care Act of 1996. This act changed health care from a business for profit under
private agencies into a service for the all of the people of Canada, in addition to extending health care
coverage for doctor services outside hospitals for Canadians. With this act, the prospect of equality
between the citizens of Canada, including citizens of Quebec began to improve, which further
promoted the idea that Canada and its population should act as a more unified force with acceptance
and inclusion between all of the individuals in it. Thus, with the introduction of the national flag, as
well as national health care in Canada, French Canadians became a more respected, established group
that was included in many other rights and laws, showing their equality to and harmony with the rest

Purpose Of Child Discipline
Everyone knows the purpose of child discipline. Parents need to set boundaries for their children and
punish them when they cross the line. Children who do not have these boundaries set for them grow
up with no respect for authority, and likely little to no respect for God. That s why discipline is
important. Proverbs 13:24, He who spares the rod Hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to
discipline him. The Bible clearly says that if someone loves their child they will discipline them.
Hebrews 12:11, For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the
peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. The Bible says that discipline is
painful in the moment but good things will come from it. God is quick to discipline us and he loves us
more that anyone in this world. So, showing good discipline isn t an action of hate (as some people
think today) it is an action of love. Proverbs 23:13 14, Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you
strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.
The Bible says here that discipline will not kill a child but will save the child s soul. Proverbs 22:6,
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. Here the
Bible says that if you train and discipline a child early is life they will remember is forever. Whether
someone is a Christian or not, they can agree that the

Sally Jameson Case
TEACHING NOTE
Sally Jameson: Valuing Stock Options in a Compensation Package (Abridged)
Objectives
This case has two educational objectives. First, it serves as an introductory case on option valuation in
which students can use market data to place a dollar value on an option they are likely to encounter in
their business careers. As such, the case encourages a discussion of the application of option pricing
models, such as Black Scholes, and exposes students to popular misconceptions of how options should
be valued. Second, the case permits a discussion of the wisdom and efficacy of incentive stock
compensation plans using options.
Synopsis
This case details a thinly disguised situation faced by a recent Harvard MBA graduate ... Show more

The case suggests to students that they first attempt to value the option assuming that Ms. Jameson
expects to stay at Telstar for the full five years needed to vest, and ignoring taxes and the lack of
tradability of the option grant. The grant gives Ms. Jameson a European call on a non dividend paying
common stock currently selling at $18.75, with an exercise price of $35.00, and a maturity of five
years. (In practice, this type of option would be structured so as to vest over the five year interval, and
exercisable over a window from perhaps five to ten years from the date of grant.) The student has to
choose between a cash grant of $5000 or 3,000 out of the money calls. Students first impressions will
likely be similar to those of the executives quoted in the supplementary The Wall Street Journal
article: Out of the money options are worthless. However, given the volatility of Telstar common
stock, their analysis should convince them that these options are far from worthless.1 To value this
European call, students need to assess the likely volatility of Telstar common stock, and they have
both data that can be used to calculate the historical volatility (Exhibit 3) as well as all of the options
quoted on Telstar (Exhibit 1). Instructors can use the case to discuss the mechanics of working through

Foucault’s Panopticism and Its Application Within Modern...
Panopticism, a social theory based on Jeremy Bentham s Panopticon and developed by Michel
Foucault describes a disciplinary mechanism used in various aspects of society. Foucault s Discipline
and Punish discusses the development of discipline in Western society, looks in particularly at
Bentham s Panopticon and how it is a working example of how the theory is employed effectively.
Foucault explains, in Discipline and Punish that this book is intended as a correlative history of the
modern soul and of a new power to judge (Foucault, 1977) and opens with accounts of public
execution and torture revealing how law and order is created because of the shift from these to prison
rules and discipline. Foucault describes the quarantining and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this way, the surveillance is permanent in its effects, even if it is discontinuous in its action
(Foucault, 1977, p201) meaning that the individual is internalised with a conscious state that he is
always being watched, and so no guards are needed as self regulation is achieved, this was best
described by Foucault when he defined the major effect of the Panopticon; to induce in the inmate a
state of conscious and permanent visibility that assures the automatic functioning of power (Foucault,
1975). Supporting one of the key panoptic principles that visibility is a trap (Foucault, 1977, p200).
Foucault goes on to explain that its strength is that it never intervenes (Foucault, 1977, p206), as it
constitutes a mechanism whose effects follow from one another , (Foucault, 1977, p206), there is the
possibility that one could intervene at any given moment, but this is never necessary due to
internalisation of a state of awareness. The inhabitants of the cells become Docile Bodies (Foucault,
1977, p135), something which he describes in full; explaining that it is achieved through mental,
rather than physical discipline, the type of discipline which is created within the Panopticon, but could

Examples Of Prejudice In A Passage To India
A Passage to India: Race, Inequlity and Suppression
A rape trial unveils more than an ethic issue, but an ethnic opposition. In A Passage to India, the rape
trial of Adela Quest to Dr. Aziz aggravates the opposition between the British and Indians, at the same
time, crystalising how nationalism as well as colonialism thoroughly lead everyone in India to be
powerless. Under the colonial system, no room is for individuality or individualism with everyone
struggling for defining themselves, not by the complexity and diversity of personalities and mindsets,
but a collective identity of being either British or Indian. In other words, in colonized India,
individuality is highly suppressed by the prejudiced stereotypes and social norms caused by the ...

  • 2. Voter Knocking I asked a young campaign canvasser early on a Saturday morning, What makes you get up early on a Saturday morning, when you could be sleeping, and door knock for a Presidential candidate for free? He replied the free donuts and coffee. I laughed, knowing that he had a good point, as I nibbled on my jelly filled donut. I had experienced this same phenomenon canvassing for a Congressional candidate. The only difference was I went for the free pizza and drinks, instead of donuts and coffee. On Saturday, October 29th I was able to shadow the Republican Party of Virginia Beach as they door knocked for Presidential candidate Donald Trump. I was interested to see what type of door knocking strategy they would employ over the course of the day. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The voters that were targeted were low propensity Republican voters.. The way that these voters were identified was through voter history, technology that shows which elections you voted in and how often you voted. We know targeting these voters is an effective strategy to increase voter turnout on election day. Research conducted by Author Alan S. Gerber and Professor Donald P. Green show how crucial this face to face interaction could be to getting Republicans who normally don t vote to vote. In their article, The Effects of Canvassing, Telephone Calls, and Direct Mail on Voter Turnout: A Field Experiment they concluded that Face to face interaction dramatically increases the chance that voters will go to the polls. (Gerber and Green, 2010) Talking to these voters face to face in their community had a positive effect in which Republicans who were not going to vote, will now vote on election day. After compiling the data, walkbooks were created with these specific low propensity Republican households shown in the walkbook. About one hundred houses were comprised in one walkbook. All sixteen volunteers were given one walkbook to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. How Did Germany Lose Ww2 In the beginning of World War II, Germany seemed to be on a path to dominating Europe. Our world could be vastly different politically, technologically, and socially if this had happened, but it didn t. Why is this? While Germany led many campaigns during World War II, it seems like one caused it to lose the war: Germany s loss of North Africa in 1943 eventually led to its downfall. This is because the North African failure was a massive loss of resources and morale and because it gave the Allies a geographic advantage. It started Germany on a slow decline that lasted until it finally surrendered in 1945. One of the primary reasons the North African campaign was so damaging was because of the resources lost by its failure. The Germans lost thousands of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The largest of these was access to the Mediterranean and Italy. Up until this point, routes of delivery [from the Allies to the USSR] were long, roundabout, and difficult because the Mediterranean and the Baltic were closed to Allied cargo vessels. (Greenfield, 228) Now, using ports and outposts in Africa, the Mediterranean was open and the USSR could get the reinforcements it needed to begin its fatal push into Germany. At the same time, Britain and the US were able to begin the Italian campaign, overthrowing one of Germany s main allies and supporters and beginning their own push into Germany. Losing control of Africa provided the Allies with a strategic advantage that Germany didn t have the resources to cope with. Throughout the second World War, Germany was involved in campaigns across the world, from Europe to the Pacific to Asia. One of the most influential was the one in North Africa. The North African campaign began the decline of Germany in World War II because its failure brought with it large losses of resources, morale, and strategic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Law is nothing but a group or collection of some rules that regulates and control society or country. Every country has different rules and laws. There are also some international laws like if you do any bad thing then you will be punished. Laws control human behaviours. They restrict human to do bad things. • 9. Scarlet Letter Rhetorical Analysis To depict Hester Prynne s inner turmoil, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses many different types of rhetorical devices, such as pathos, simile, and metaphor. He also uses an abundance amount of syntax, irony and tone. Hawthorne uses metaphors and similes often in chapter five, to exaggerate Hester s chaos inside. The arrangement of words and phrases Hawthorne uses makes the reader think and try to understand Hester s tension. Hawthorne describes that Hester feels like the chain that bound her here was of iron links, and galling to her inmost soul. This doesn t mean that she is bound by actual chains, but instead it means that she feels as if she is stuck in Boston, and ends up staying in a cottage on the outskirts of the town. He then continues with, although she hid the secret from herself, and grew pale whenever it struggled out of her heart, like a serpent from its home. In these statements Hawthorne is using the metaphor and simile to give the reader a view into Hester s inner turmoil. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He describes that, the very law that condemned her....had held her up through the terrible ordeal of her ignominy. This makes zero sense, how could something, or someone, that convicted you, hold you up through your trials? Hawthorne uses this to give the reader a look into the depth of Hester s thoughts. Later Hawthorne writes that, her needlework was seen on the ruff of the Governor; military men wore it on their scarfs, and the minister on his band; it decked baby s little cap; it was shut up, to be mildewed and molder away, in the coffins of the dead. There s irony in this statement, because before this Hawthorne points out that as Hester walks out of the prison she thinks to herself how she would become the general symbol at which the preacher and moralist might point, and in which they might vivify and embody their images of woman s frailty and sinful ... • 10. Tax Benefits Of The Tax Under the tax law, certain tax benefits can significantly reduce a taxpayer s regular tax amount. The alternative minimum tax (AMT) applies to taxpayers with high income by setting a limit on those benefits. It helps to ensure that those taxpayers pay at least a minimum amount of tax. The AMT is the excess of the tentative minimum tax over the regular tax. Therefore, the AMT is owed only if the tentative minimum tax is greater than the regular tax. The tentative minimum tax is figured separately from the regular tax. In general, compute the tentative minimum tax by: 1. Computing taxable income eliminating or reducing certain exclusions and deductions, and taking into account differences with respect to when certain items are taken into account in computing regular taxable income and alternative minimum taxable income (AMTI) 2. Subtracting the AMT exemption amount 3. Multiplying the amount computed in (2) by the appropriate AMT tax rates 4. Subtracting the AMT foreign tax credit (IRS.gov, 2016) (p. 1) The federal tax law sets the AMT exemption amounts and AMT tax rates. Taxpayers can use the special capital gain rates in effect for the regular tax if they are lower than the AMT tax rates that would otherwise apply. Some tax credits that reduce regular tax liability do not reduce AMT tax liability. If a taxpayer is not liable for AMT this year, but he or she paid AMT in one or more previous years, they may be eligible to take a special minimum tax credit against their ... • 11. Representation Of Women In The Media Analysis We live in an ageist society, which favours youth. Because of this, celebrities age is inherent in the discourses (Van den Bulck, 2014, p. 63) about their persona and appearance. This is especially true of female celebrities who come under constant scrutiny because our patriarchal society means that there are different standards for men s and women s aging (Oberg, 2003, p. 126). MailOnline provides perfect examples of older women s representations in the media demonstrating the public obsession with youthfulness and that older female celebrities are rarely represented, but when they are, they are usually shown as desexualised and unattractive. There are some exceptions, for example the newspaper s focus on Helen Mirren; however, sexy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 162). MailOnline probably only depicts Mirren as attractive as she is a blonde beauty with a nicely toned body (Chester Smith, 2015). Sontag states, what makes these women seem beautiful to us is precisely that they do not look their real age (1972, p. 36). In this way, these apparently positive representations of older women are still just as bad for shaming women s aged bodies as they starkly remind the audience that the sustainability of sexual attractiveness is one of the most highly valued personal commodities in the media market (Garde Hansen, 2012, pp. 161 162). Overall, aging women tend to be inadequately represented in the media for the reason that these women bear the brunt of ageism because they are already devalued as female (Cruikshank, 2009, p. 143). Additionally, because the patriarchy s ideal state for women is docility (Sontag, 1972, p. 38), beauty standards and practices will continue to be enforced helping to shame any appearance that differs from what society deems beautiful. • 14. An Important Aspect Of Purchasing And Selling Goods Whether An important aspect of purchasing and selling goods whether for trade or personal reasons is to understand who bears the burden of damage to the goods. This is of great importance, but often overlooked, determining when risk has passed from one party to the next establishes whether the seller may still recover the full price of the damaged goods and the buyer be left with damaged goods or not. In this short note we will briefly look at the consequences of not dealing with these issues in your contract as well as some brief thoughts on how this may be avoided. WHAT DO WE MEAN BY RISK PASSING AND WHEN DOES THIS HAPPEN? When we talk of the risk passing to the buyer what is referred to is the burden of having to deal with the damaged goods. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As such, in these types of contracts the risk does not pass until the goods described in the contract are appropriated to the contract. That is, when the seller has set aside a specific 10 tonnes of maize to be bought by the buyer. Until the product has been appropriated to the contract the seller is liable to replace the goods before they are entitled to the purchase price, once they have been appropriated or distinguished the risk for damage passes to the buyer. What if the sale is subject to a condition? For example suppose that the contract of sale for a buffalo was made conditional on the buffalo being tested for, and being found free of, any disease (the sale is suspended until the buffalo is found to be disease free) and the buffalo dies before this can be determined. In situations like this the risk does not pass to the buyer until the condition has been fulfilled. On fulfilment of the condition the risk becomes the buyers from the date of conclusion of the sale. In the above scenario the risk has not yet passed to the buyer therefore the seller bears the risk of the buffalo dying or being injured. The buyer does not have to pay the price even when it is later determined that the buffalo was disease free. Stars are the most recognized astronomical objects and are the building blocks of the galaxies. These luminous spheres made of plasma are responsible for the creation of heavy elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. They were among the first objects in the early universe. Most of the elements found in the human body originated in stars, this means that we are literally made of stardust. When you are staring at stars from the night sky, you are actually looking back in time, the light you see could be from a million years ago. Suffice it to say that the past year has been one of change and transition for the role of Chaplain at Hereworth School, and for the life of the chapel. With Reverend Rosemary Carey s departure at the end of Term Two, the life of the chapel was placed in the hands of the teaching staff for Term Three, with valiant efforts to continue the spiritual dimension of the school. While no doubt the experience was enjoyed by staff and students alike, the words uttered to me by one staff member as I left my first chapel service, Thank God you re here , suggest there is an appreciation for the unique challenges of the role. However, to examine if Singapore is in fact democratic, we need to first define the word democracy and its parameters. Chief reasons for the PAP s continued dominance The PAP s ability to maintain its hegemony till date can be attributed to two main reasons, firstly, the PAP has been introducing schemes in the electorate system to suppress the opposition and secondly, the PAP s control over the grassroots organizations have established the required link between itself and the citizens. • 20. Nonconformism In Manuel Puigan s Kiss Of Spider Woman In a society governed by straight, cis gender men, the nonconformists have been pushed to the side and hidden from view. Ashamed by their anomalies, these men have released heteronormative, patriarchal media to create a conformist society and to label any outsider as strange or other. Although media about the marginalized exists, they are few and far in between, leaving them to appropriate other forms of expression. In Manuel Puig s Kiss of Spider Woman, Molina, an effeminate gay man, recounts the storyline of Jacques Tourner s film, Cat People, through a queer perspective. By identifying with a nonhuman figure and distorting a heteronormative plotline, Molina recognizes the animality, or otherness, within himself due to his nonconforming nature. In Molina s narration of Tourner s film, he often shows admiration towards Irena, a cat person. When introducing her to Valentín, he expresses that she is not a woman like all the others, indicating her otherness yet romanticizing her at the same time (Puig 3). She is unlike other women not only because she s non human but also the heroine (25). This idolization is, furthermore, seen when he bids his cellmate goodnight. Sweet dreams of Irena, he says, elevating her into an ethereal figure (9). Therefore, Molina s reverence leads him to place himself in Irena s shoes. Like Irena, he is fond of Oliver because he s the gentle type, and understanding (17); yet, he loathes the psychiatrist because so does [she], revealing that his feelings towards the characters are dependent on hers (20). In other instances, Molina seems to know what Irena is thinking and feeling although the film does not delve into her mind. He explains how, when seeing Oliver, she [had] such a strong desire to kiss him, on the mouth (21). Yet, in the film, the viewer is unable to truly know her desires unless they are explicitly said. So, Molina has assumed her character mentally and emotionally. However, Molina s identification with Irena is evident in the encounter with the other foreign woman. In his narration, he explains this scene almost precisely as it is in the film. The only difference is that Molina can provides a translation for the woman s line. According to ... Children who do not have these boundaries set for them grow up with no respect for authority, and likely little to no respect for God. That s why discipline is important. Proverbs 13:24, He who spares the rod Hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. The Bible clearly says that if someone loves their child they will discipline them. Hebrews 12:11, For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. The Bible says that discipline is painful in the moment but good things will come from it. God is quick to discipline us and he loves us more that anyone in this world. So, showing good discipline isn t an action of hate (as some people think today) it is an action of love. Proverbs 23:13 14, Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.
