The Art of Invisible Strength Essay
The Art of Invisible Strength
Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club is a truly rich novel. The concept of invisible strength caught my
interest in particular, so I have chosen to analyze the relationship between Lindo, her daughter
Waverly and Waverly s boyfriend Rich. My questions are how Lindo achieved this strength, why she
did it and how it effected herself, Waverly and Rich.
It is fundamental to the analysis to investigate Lindo s past in China. It is clear that she is a much
loved child. In my case, people could see my value. I looked and smelled like a precious buncake,
sweet with a good clean color (42). In my opinion, that kind of self worth comes from unconditional
love. This helps her when she is left at twelve by her family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Huangs are frightened and Lindo is set free. She has mastered the art of invisible strength.
Consequently, when we then meet Lindo s daughter Waverly, her first words are: I was six when my
mother taught me the art of invisible strength (80). But Waverly plays chess. She never masters the art
of playing with people, the way her mother does. There is a dark side to this invisible force; Lindo
cannot refrain from manipulating even her most loved ones.
In contrast to her mother Waverly is not strong, but when she reaches puberty her mother s
overpowering interest in her career as a chess champion makes her rebel. At one point she screems:
Why do you have to use me to show off? If you want to show off, then why don t you learn to play
chess? (91). This hurts Lindo at the core of her being.
The pain they feel makes the fight fierce; the weapon is ice cold silence, used by both parties. Waverly
stops playing chess and life continues without a word. But she cannot challenge her mother and
decides to play again. Lindo is furious: It is not so easy anymore! (166). The cause of Lindo s anger is
that Waverly is completely unaware of the sacrifices Lindo has had to make, in order to enable her
little girl to play chess in complete freedom. Because Lindo has had to fight so hard, she cannot
endure Waverly s carefree approach to life.
Waverly is severely punished: It was as if she had erected an invisible wall and I was

The Behavioral Perspective Of Human Development
Human development is a process that occurs throughout the lifespan, and lifespan development
theories offer frameworks for which to understand human growth. Different approaches focus on
specific aspects of human life to determine which has the most significant influence on development.
However, one theory usually does not account for all variables of human growth so more than one
perspective may be used to analyze development. Two such perspectives, the behavioral and the
contextual, explain development in different ways. The behavioral perspective focuses on observable
behavior, while the contextual perspective focuses on interrelated systems that influence development.
When applied to the case study in the index, the differences in the behavioral and contextual theories
become evident.
The Behavioral Perspective
The behavioral perspective of development suggests that human development can be understood by
observing how people behave in response to environmental stimuli. This theory denies distinct
universal stages in development and insists that environmental factors influence how a person will
change and adapt in their society. From this perspective, people will have positive developmental
experiences if they grow up in a nurturing environment. B.F. Skinner introduced the operant
conditioning theory which asserts that children develop in response to reinforcement or punishment
(Feldman Landry, 2014, p. 15). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of someone

Abstract
This paper outlines the formation of a vision statement, the mission and the values that JetBlue and
Southwest airlines embrace. A firm can initiate strategic management once it forms a mission
statement. That statement allows forms to aspire to its potential while bearing in mind what it wants to
avoid as it successfully grows. JetBlue and Southwest airlines mission has been primarily to govern
the way they conduct business and the desire to serve customers and give direction to make service
related decisions. This paper will concentrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Recommendations to the leadership: My recommendations for both companies are to keep employee
job satisfaction and workplace environment number 1 priority, provide open forums for employee
concerns Understand that happy employees=happy customers and continue to market Southwest and
Jet Blue as concerned about customer satisfaction and safety.
The Vision: JetBlue s 2005 annual report features a quotation from then CEO David Neeleman that
serves as a summation of company vision: As JetBlue continues to grow, we know our commitment to
friendly, helpful service, combined with amenities customers want, will continue to keep JetBlue #1 in
the eyes of our customers ( JetBlue Annual Report, 2005). That statement reads well within that six
year old annual report. JetBlue has grown substantially since 2005 and Neeleman since has been
replaced by Dave Barger as CEO ( JetBlue Annual Report, 2010). Barger could expand on the
Neelman s vision and offer the following vision in 2011: JetBlue s vision is one of continual emphasis
on providing competitive rates for customers for all of our destinations. We will strive to maintain our
industry standard lowest cost per mile, and will continually seek new strategies and technologies that
keep down the costs for every one of our flight routes. We foresee JetBlue as a value driven leader,
understanding that as a lower cost carrier we will surpass customer expectations by offering

Mills Pleasures
Do you agree with Mill s assertion that some pleasures are higher than others? What would you
consider higher and lower pleasures?
Mental pleasures are intrinsically superior to physical pleasures, as well as circumstantially. The
evidence Mill appeals to in support of his claim that there are different kinds of pleasures and that
some are superior to others is the experience of mankind. Those who are acquainted with both sorts of
pleasures do prefer the higher pleasures. (P.10)
I can somewhat agree with Mills that some pleasures can be considered higher than others. Mills
asserted that mental pleasures were superior to physical pleasures, However, I feel that it is for each
individual to say what is a higher form of pleasure for them.

Bells for John Whiteside s Daughter by John Crowe Ransom
John Crowe Ransom was one of the most influential writers of his time. As a poet, essayist, and
teacher at Vanderbilt University and Kenyon College, Ransom was one of the prominent leaders of the
Fugitive Agrarians and the founder of the New Criticism school of literary criticism and the literary
journal, Kenyon Review. His works fall into many different literary movements but the majority of his
poems fall within the Fugitive Agrarianism, now known as the Southern Renaissance, movement that
emphasized classicism and traditionalism. The writers that were part of the Southern Renaissance,
including Ransom, gathered to write a collection of essays that promoted and revitalized Southern
literature in the United States. They were known for representing the tensions and paradoxes that
resulted from the collision of Northern and Southern ideologies (Holmgren para. 3). Comparably, the
Fugitive agrarians emphasized traditional poetic forms and techniques, and their poems developed
intellectual and moral themes focusing on an individual s relationship to society and to the natural
world (Davis para. 1). Both groups were especially focused on the intrusion of Northern industrialism
and destruction of Southern agrarian culture. Ransom uses bursts of imagery of rural life that reflects
the agricultural aspects that the Southern Renaissance movement stressed. He channels a lot of natural
scenery in his poem, Miriam Tazewell, but a darker and more gruesome stage in Winter

Decline Roman Empire
In the period circa 600 B.C.E to 600 C.E., imperial decline and collapse was caused partly by over
expansion, a failing economy due to overspending, and external invasions by barbarian tribes as
shown by the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 C.E..
One main cause of the decline and collapse of the Roman Empire was over expansion of territory
which led to the empire becoming too large to govern successfully and overall decentralization. At its
zenith during Pax Romana, the empire extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Euphrates River in the
Middle East and also consisted of parts of North Africa. As the empire began expanding farther from
its administrative center, the Romans were unable to communicate quickly or effectively enough in
order to control their territory. With such a vast empire, Romans struggled to deploy sufficient troops
and resources to defend the borders and frontiers from rebellions and external invasions. This also led
to the emperor, Hadrian, building his famous wall in order to protect the British Isles from foreign
attacks. Furthermore, the Roman Empire became comprised of many different cultures as it expanded.
Some conquered people retained their own individual cultural identity by keeping their own religion ...

Money was spend on constant wars, the extravagant lifestyle of the rich and emperors, and welfare for
the many unemployed Romans. In addition to this, since there was little expansion towards the later
years of the empire, there was no more war plunder to be gained. These factors led to massive
inflation, people buying fewer goods, a lack of trade, and overtaxing the poor. Oppressive taxing of
peasants also led to a wide gap between the rich and the poor. Many jobs done by lower classes were
also lost to slaves and over reliance on free labor led to increased unemployment and further

lawyers engaged in the sale of goods or services related to the practice of law, for example, the sale of

Badland Lyrics Analysis
Something that makes Badlands such a beautiful work of art are the lyrics, which are simple and
beautiful enough to make them relatable to nearly anyone who listens to them. Many people have
criticized Halsey s lyrics for being generic, however, they are creative and carefully written, but may
not appeal to everyone. One of her best lyrics is a fan favorite, you were red, and you liked me
because I was blue. But you touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky, and you decided purple just
wasn t for you. This lyric is from the song Colors, which was written about Halsey s brief relationship
with Matty Healy from the band The 1975. It describes a relationship in which one person changes
another so much that they find they no longer are attracted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

With your face all made up, living on a screen, low on self esteem so you run on gasoline, from her
song Gasoline. This song describes how Halsey feels like she is an outsider to society and she feels
that people are confused by her as she grows more and more popular. The lyric, which is from the
chorus, is her describing what she sees other people as. She is saying that there s pressure to conform
and not be true to whom one really is, and if people don t have much confidence they will follow
popular trends to fit in and be accepted in society. Even though Halsey is very unique and different,
even she still feels the pressure due to fame, and she feels that she s living on a screen. Finally, what is
possibly the best lyric from Badlands is from the song Control: I m bigger than my body; I m colder
than this home. I m meaner than my demons; I m bigger than these bones. Throughout the song,
Halsey describes her struggles with having bipolar disorder since she was a teenager. She has been
very open about having the disorder, even going so far as to discuss it with several interviewers. This
lyric is her assuring herself that she s stronger than everything that s trying to hold her

Compare And Contrast Martin Luther King And Religion
Early on in his famous letter, Martin Luther King Jr. writes: I have the honor of serving as president of
the Southern Christian Leadership conference (King 2). In a similar fashion, Malcolm X states in the
third paragraph of his speech: Although I am still a Muslim, I m not here to discuss my religion (X
24). Both making their religions clear, but the way they approach religion in the two texts are starkly
different from one another. Both, in a way, touch on religion in such a way to respond to a particular
religious organization. King s letter is written in response to a group of mostly Christian clergymen
who published A Call to Unity , a statement made in the newspaper which criticized King and his
methods of causing trouble. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses religion to back up his claims and shows how his actions are morally supported by the Bible,
people fighting injustice beyond their homeland is nothing new, and King argues that by doing so he is
following the religious texts he and the other clergymen live their life by.
King brings in examples from his religion to further his argument that one must oppose unjust laws
using nonviolent direct action. King is accused of being an extremist, to which he responds: Will we
be extremists for hate or for love? (King 26). A bold statement, phrasing action as having two distinct
sides. King strongly disavows the white moderate who stands to the side and waits for justice to come
with time, instead of fighting for justice in the moment. He is quick to refer to the Bible when
addressing the clergymen: Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel? (King 25). Using a
rhetorical question with a biblical reference to make those who consider him an extremist, rethink if
being an extremist is such an ill position to be in. He continues to use biblical imagery to support his
point, citing that he is an extremist for love as so many were before him, including several prominent
figures from Christianity. Even Jesus Christ, he states was an extremist for love, truth and goodness
(King 26). By using this symbolism King is able to converse with his fellow clergymen in a way that
is familiar to them all, pointing out the flaws in their

I would like to particularly observe relating to American culture/values. Some ideas included
interactions between American people, gender differences as well as employees attitude. I wanted to

Before the field trip, I had a few thoughts/assumptions/beliefs about Americans such as I thought

Why Did The Toris Adopt The Reform Act Of 1832
The Tories opposed the Reform Act of 1832 because they didn t want more people being able to Vote

The Arab Civil War And The Destruction Of Ancient Objects...
Since the early twenty first century and even before, museums in the Middle East have had to learn to
cope with conflict. Syria is the best example of a country with many cultural heritage sites and
museums that are in danger due to conflict. The onset of the Syrian Civil War and the destruction of
ancient objects and cultural heritage sites by ISIS have been the most recent manifestation of this. As a
result of the Syrian Civil War and ISIS takeover, sites like Palmyra and the Aleppo historic city center
have been heavily damaged ( The Race to Save Syria s Archaeological Treasures. 2016). Palmyra has
stood for thousands of years, as prominent commercial site in ancient times and as a symbol Syrian

ISIS s motivations revolve around looting and smuggling of ancient artifacts for funding (al Frieh
2016), religious cleansing for the restoration of true Islam, a chance to make news headlines
worldwide to spread fear and intimidation of local populations (Swicord 2016). The dangers of war
have driven away many people who could protect these cultural heritage sites and the objects within
them, and now they are helpless in the face of destruction in conflict and being smuggled for profit.
Palmyra was a victim of this when ISIS captured the city in May of 2015 and controlled it for about
one year. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with remains nearly 2000 years old ( ISIL
captures strategic Syrian city of Palmyra. 2015). During its occupation, the city faced several kinds of
destruction at the hands of its captors. The city had already been damaged from the fighting and
shelling that resulted in its capture. The city s Temple of Ba al was severely damaged by mortar fire.
ISIS also carried out many deliberate acts of violence against the objects and architecture. In the
months following their victory, ISIS militants destroyed the Temple of Ba al s primary building and
other structures, like the nearby Temple of Baalshamin and the decorative arches built by the Romans
in the second century CE. They destroyed and defaced these larger like architecture and sculptures

While the book has one over arching thesis, inform the reader about the changing face of globalization
(12) each section has a thesis which helps to direct the thoughts of the readers and writers in a
particular section. The authors are not attempting to argue for one particular aspect of world missions
but rather they are attempting to provide an overview of the issues which are taking place in world
missions.
The first section deals with the issue of missions within a larger global context. The authors explain
their purpose is to, describe major trends in the world to which we minister (14). The text deals with
globalization, changing demographics, the movement of world religions and the world s shift from
modernity to post modernity. The authors argue for an emphasis on globalization stressing that
globalization changes the context in which we minister. Globalization matters because it
fundamentally changes the contexts in which we minister; the way people and cultures perceive each
other; how people think and the means available to reach them (24). Globalization has affected the
way Christians view the world and also how Christians share the Gospel. The authors identify the
changing demographics and engage the reasons why individuals are moving away from their country
of birth. The authors provide detailed description of the issues facing migration as well as evaluations

Ecology Personal Statement
My decision to pursue graduate study and research in the field of ecology comes from my aspiration to
become a leading researcher. I feel that the knowledge what I have gained in this field is little.
Therefore, to help me acquire a better understanding of this multi faceted field of ecology, I would like
to pursue my doctoral degree major in ecology.
During my undergraduate level, I have been fascinated with the field of biotechnology. It is why I
choose this field as my MS thesis research. However, after deliberate thought and careful study, I
changed my mind and have decided to build my career as an ecologist. My aspiration to pursue a

Pine Island
The poem Lying in a Hammock at William Duffy s Farm in Pine Island, Minnesota has inspired reams
of analysis and debate and still does to this day. We are presented in James Wright s poem with several
images which are actually distinct, though they are loosely connected by situation, but is for us
connected with them by neither logic nor association. A great majority of the images that occur in the
poem are based off of the basic senses such as our auditory and visual senses. Although almost basic
in a sense, the content of the poem uses our own natural, human senses to express this aura of
mediocrity and usualness. At first glance, one would wonder about the unusually long title of this
poem. The title, although extensive, gives readers an exact location. In this case, that would be Pine
Island, Minnesota. Oddly enough, a specific location actually brings about a sense of anonymity,
considering it is somewhere as out of pocket and normal as Minnesota. The author chose such a place
to make readers picture the conceived rural image associated with states like Minnesota, North
Dakota, Nebraska, and so forth. With this image in play, the author begins the poem by speaking of a
bronze butterfly in Line 1. The description of bronze brings rigidity to the softness of the butterfly. It
also initiates the connection of light throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My Son The Fanatic Belonging
Immigrating from one country to another is a challenge that many people face. For some, it may be a
positive change but for others, it is the opposite. The cause for immigrating depends on the
environment and the circumstances that will cause some people to feel they must leave their country
to solve their lives. In doing so, however, they leave everything behind to begin a new journey that
may not be the way they want it to be. The two short stories A Father by Bharati Mukherjee and My
Son the Fanatic by Hanif Kureishi, deal with this issue in the present. These two stories give a clear
perspective on the challenges immigrants might face that is conflicting with their culture and
traditional values. While the characters in both these stories have different viewpoints, they have
similar conflicts with them being generational, religious, and cultural conflicts. In the first story A
Father has immigrated from India to the US. Mr. Bhowmick is a traditional and a religious person who
believes in God and follows his religion sternly. For example, he recited prayers in Sanskrit to Kali,
the patron goddess of his family, the goddess of wrath and vengeance (Mukherjee 837). At one point
his wife nagged that he wasn t praying, instead, he was shutting her out of his life. His religious

Racism And Racism In Othello
Race plays an important role in William Shakespeare s Othello: an intense tragedy of an admired
military general, who is driven to kill his wife and himself out of jealously. Othello is of Black African
descent, which separates him from many in his Venetian world. Throughout the play, Othello s race is
seen as a negative aspect of his character, which is used by the antagonist, Iago, as a weak point to
initiate chaos. The play depicts racism and uses the influence of radicalized perspective to create a
tragedy. Shakespeare created Othello to be a great leader, a powerful and noble man, to defy Venetian
societal views. He did so effectively through the development of varied interpersonal relationships,
and how racism effects each of them.
When Othello is first introduced into the play, the audience knows that he is a well respected leader.
As the play continues, racist and non racist views become quite evident, which eventually effect the
actions and ways Othello sees himself. Othello s wife, Desdemona, is a young Caucasian woman, who
recognizes Othello for his true self, not his race. She admires the dangers that [he] had passed
(1.3.193. Shakespeare, William. Othello), and his abilities as a valiant leader. Desdemona knows that
her inter racial marriage is not common, or widely approved of, yet she continues to trumpet to the
world (1.3.285. Shakespeare, Othello) her love for him. Her unwavering devotion to Othello is a
critical detail because she stays true to her feelings in a world where she is surrounded by
discrimination towards Othello. Before Iago approaches Desdemona s father, Brabantio, about their
marriage, Othello expresses that [Desdemona s] father loved [him] (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello),
and often invited him into their home (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello). These examples of characters
from the play and their non racist views of Othello prove that Othello is a play that illustrates racism,
not a play meant to offend and segregate against people of colour.
Many critics of Othello have suggested that Shakespeare wrote a racist play, and that Shakespeare
himself wanted to convince others that even a black man in Venetian society will eventually revert to
his violent and animal like ways

How Lean And Lean Approach For Enhancing Organizational...
Obstacles to Implementing Lean
Lean System has become a popular technique used in both local and global markets. More companies
are embracing it to improve efficiency, achieve better quality, and be more competitive. The Lean
thinking was considered to be one potential approach to enhancing organizational performance. It has
evolved into a management approach that improves processes at different levels of the organization.
Nevertheless, the process of implementing lean manufacturing is bound to encounter obstacles.
Besides defining the lean concept, this paper will consider the points that impede lean implementation
and will outline the main two defies that companies are facing when they change their business model
towards implementing a new management system, lean approach. This paper will also provide some
recommendations to overcome these obstacles.
Lean Definition
Todd(2000) defines lean production as initiative, whose goal is to shrink the waste in human effort,
inventory, time to market, and manufacturing space to become highly responsive to customer demand
while producing world class quality products in the most efficient and economical manner . The Lean
approach consists of several practices, which aim to improve efficiency, quality, and responsiveness to
customers. Lean manufacturing is industrialized by Taiichi Ohno at Toyota Motor Company in the

The Origin Of Aboriginal People
The Oxford dictionary defines the stolen generation as: The Aboriginal people forcibly removed from
their families as children between the 1900s and the 1960s, to be brought up by white foster families
or in institutions. But what the Oxford definition cannot tell us is the horrible impacts of the stolen
generation on: the stolen children, their families, the Aboriginal culture and Australia as a Nation. The
stolen generation was caused by European Australians belief that Aboriginal people were inferior to
them, a belief stemming from the fact that the Aboriginal people had not industrialised and therefore
they appeared primitive to European Australians who had industrialised in the 1700s. The European
Australians also believed that the Aboriginal people were dying out, due to the catastrophic population
decline after the European Australians arrived. This decline in the Aboriginal population was mainly
caused by the arrival of the European Australians whom brought diseases that they had no immunity
for and caused conflict, (such as the frontier wars) that took the lives of many Aboriginal Australians,
causing their population to fall from 700 000 in 1788 to 93000 in 1900. This decline in the Indigenous
peoples numbers eventually lead to the creation of policies such as the Aborigines Protection Act of
1909. This and other similar acts in different states gave the members of the Aboriginal Protection
Board the power to forcibly remove Aboriginal children from their

Spanking In Children
Everyday parents are faced with the challenges of disciplining their children. We all wish there was an
instruction booklet that we could magical pull out and get them back on the right path, but no such
thing exists. Often times, your child pushes you to the edge of your personal limitations. At this
moment it is often we correct our child s behavior by spanking. Spanking is considered a form of
discipline that is acceptable by most and an unacceptable to a smaller crowd. Spanking can lead to
psychological problems in early adolescent, which long term can lead to emotional and anger

Many of these parents who support spanking feel it is their right to do so. This is justified by the
simple fact as when they were a child they were spanked and said I turned out okay . This is probably
true for most of them, but 2017 is a different world from when they were children. Supporting parents
often say they know when and where to draw the line. At least 1,200 children are killed every year at
the hands of their parents in the name of physical punishment. (Guidance of Effective Discipline,
online). As I stated early, there is no written guideline to follow, so how do we know when enough is
enough? There is a huge grey area that is undefined and the true answer is they don t. Parents
sometimes forget that it is there duty to teach and educate to help our children reach their full
potential. Parents need to stop justifying their rights to discipline as a parent and focus on changing
the culture by using alternative methods and

The Five Characteristics Of A Good President
Presidents are very important to the country, but the 3 most important requirement to become a
president of the United States include, being the age of 35, a natural born citizen and a resident within
the United States for 14 years. When looking at the American history today and trying to figure out the
best one, it is important to look at individual traits that make a good president. For example, some
presidents were loved by the public but barely made any accomplishment in the office while on the
other hand some presidents made massive accomplishments for the economy and the country but were
overlooked with disregard. The five important traits for a good president are Intelligence/ wisdom,
honesty, leadership quality, respecting and hard working.
Intelligence also known as wisdom means having the quality of experience, knowledge, and good
judgment to make great decisions. Intelligence and wisdom are important due to various reasons.
Firstly, a president must know every criteria and should be very knowledgeable regarding his job.
Also, presidents are people who make decisions and judge for the ... Show more content on

Another important trait is honesty as it is very important for the country to have a trustworthy leader
who doesn t cheat on his people; every president in the history of America has made a false and a fake
promise to his people before being elected as the president to win the heart of the people and later not
complete the promise that he had made. The president should not lie to his people; he should also be
honest to other countries for alliances and unions and without the alliance the country might suffer and
not be well known. For example, if the president of the United States lies to the Chinese government,
there is a high chance for the Chinese government to stop exporting their products which a lot of the
U.S. citizens rely on. Thus, honesty or being honest is an important trait to be in a

Stakeholder Response For Waiting For Superman
Stakeholder Response to Waiting for Superman Stake Holder Group When the word school is
mentioned, often, we first think about students and teachers. These two groups roughly describe the
educational system. This assignment will focus on teachers as stakeholders in public school districts.
Demographic Description In the year of 2011, there were 3.2 million teachers who were employed at
public schools throughout the nation, which served close to 50 million children in grades kindergarten
through twelfth (Feistritzer, 2011). Currently, to be employed as a teacher in the United States, one
must obtain a Bachelor s Degree from an accredited college or university, and be certificated in the
state that one wishes to be employed. The certification serves as a teaching credential, which is needed
for teachers in all states. America has encountered a change within the teaching profession:
concerning, experience, age, credentials, and ethnic background (Feistritzer, 2011). It is almost as if
the year of 2005, overturned the trend of older employed teachers (Feistritzer, 2011). A six year survey
shows that the amount of teachers under the age of thirty has increased drastically, and that most
teachers have earned master degrees. Also, although teaching has been a predominately white
profession, more Hispanic and African American teachers were hired between the years of 2005 and
2011 (Feistritzer, 2011). Role in Education Teachers have many roles within the education system.

Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy
Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module that
Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that he was
also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper, that this
philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would, of course, be
correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain a peaceful and
civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The idea being that I
give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to murder me. You give
up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other people do not harm you
doing those same things.
Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State of
Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and
consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported
by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things as require
much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no Letters; and
which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poor,

Cell Phones As A Moderator For The Relationship Between...
Cell phone dependency as a moderator for the relationship between passive cell phone interaction and
situation awareness INTRODUCTION Klauer et al. (2014) found a positive correlation between the
use of cellular phones (hands free or handheld) and the rate of traffic accidents and distraction. These
mobile phones, which are now capable of not only answering calls, but are also capable of playing
games, text messaging, browsing the internet, etc. are now attainable for a vast number of individuals.
According to the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA; 2015), there were over 377 million
U.S. mobile phone subscriptions by the end of 2015. With the increased availability and technological
abilities of mobile phones, has come the ability of individuals to stay connected to their device and
social networks throughout the entirety of the day. When used during leisure, mobile phones can be
quite useful; however, when mobile phones are used during cognitively demanding situations (e.g.,
driving) there can be many negative results stemming from distraction. Even with myriad data
showing the potential negative effects of phone interaction (e.g., Klauer, Dingus, Neale, Sudweeks,
Ramsey, 2006; Strayer William, 2001; Klauer, et al., 2014), many users still choose to use their phone
while driving. In fact, according to a 2011 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, 33% of
U.S. drivers reported using their mobile phone while driving at least once during the

Theme Of Women In The Victorian Era
During the Victorian Era, women were often seen as inferior compared to men, and throughout the
novel, it is clearly shown and presented through a number of the characters. These include Lady
Bracknell s opinion on marriage and the attitudes of Cecile and Gwendolyn in finding their ideal
husband. Women during the Victorian Era in middle and lower social classes were not encouraged to
have too much education as their main duty was to do domestic work and reproduce.
Queen Victoria once said Let women be what God intended, a helpmate for man, but with totally
different duties. This made a big difference to the position of women during her time of reign, as many
women followed her belief and her belief became the norm during that period of time. Once married,
all the belongings of the women were given by law to men which restricted in what women were
allowed and could do during that era which lead to women being entirely dependent on their
husbands.
In the novel, we are first introduced to Lady Bracknell when she visits Algernon for tea. In the movie
she is portrayed as an arrogant, independent and snobbish women that followed strict rules of the
upper class with what was and what was not acceptable. Lady Bracknell does not allow Gwendolyn to

African American religious music is the foundation of all contemporary forms of so called black
music. African American religious music has been a fundamental part of the black experience in this
country. This common staple of the African American experience can be traced back to the cruel
system of slavery. It then evolved into what we refer to today as gospel music. The goal of this paper
is to answer three main questions. What are the origins of African American religious music? How did
this musical expression develop into a secular form of music? What is the future of African American
religious music? These questions will be answered through factual research of African American
traditions, artists, and various other sources. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A spiritual journey dominates these songs, but the concern for physical freedom is there as well. The
most pervasive image in the spirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that they had
been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better than
anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters
that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the
same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of slavery. The
wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example,
Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang
meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of the promised land in
a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these
sacred songs as secret communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a
secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs,
such as Wade in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual
emancipation of the slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently

  • 2. The Art of Invisible Strength Essay The Art of Invisible Strength Amy Tan s The Joy Luck Club is a truly rich novel. The concept of invisible strength caught my interest in particular, so I have chosen to analyze the relationship between Lindo, her daughter Waverly and Waverly s boyfriend Rich. My questions are how Lindo achieved this strength, why she did it and how it effected herself, Waverly and Rich. It is fundamental to the analysis to investigate Lindo s past in China. It is clear that she is a much loved child. In my case, people could see my value. I looked and smelled like a precious buncake, sweet with a good clean color (42). In my opinion, that kind of self worth comes from unconditional love. This helps her when she is left at twelve by her family. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Huangs are frightened and Lindo is set free. She has mastered the art of invisible strength. Consequently, when we then meet Lindo s daughter Waverly, her first words are: I was six when my mother taught me the art of invisible strength (80). But Waverly plays chess. She never masters the art of playing with people, the way her mother does. There is a dark side to this invisible force; Lindo cannot refrain from manipulating even her most loved ones. In contrast to her mother Waverly is not strong, but when she reaches puberty her mother s overpowering interest in her career as a chess champion makes her rebel. At one point she screems: Why do you have to use me to show off? If you want to show off, then why don t you learn to play chess? (91). This hurts Lindo at the core of her being. The pain they feel makes the fight fierce; the weapon is ice cold silence, used by both parties. Waverly stops playing chess and life continues without a word. But she cannot challenge her mother and decides to play again. Lindo is furious: It is not so easy anymore! (166). The cause of Lindo s anger is that Waverly is completely unaware of the sacrifices Lindo has had to make, in order to enable her little girl to play chess in complete freedom. Because Lindo has had to fight so hard, she cannot endure Waverly s carefree approach to life. Waverly is severely punished: It was as if she had erected an invisible wall and I was ... • 3. The Behavioral Perspective Of Human Development Human development is a process that occurs throughout the lifespan, and lifespan development theories offer frameworks for which to understand human growth. Different approaches focus on specific aspects of human life to determine which has the most significant influence on development. However, one theory usually does not account for all variables of human growth so more than one perspective may be used to analyze development. Two such perspectives, the behavioral and the contextual, explain development in different ways. The behavioral perspective focuses on observable behavior, while the contextual perspective focuses on interrelated systems that influence development. When applied to the case study in the index, the differences in the behavioral and contextual theories become evident. The Behavioral Perspective The behavioral perspective of development suggests that human development can be understood by observing how people behave in response to environmental stimuli. This theory denies distinct universal stages in development and insists that environmental factors influence how a person will change and adapt in their society. From this perspective, people will have positive developmental experiences if they grow up in a nurturing environment. B.F. Skinner introduced the operant conditioning theory which asserts that children develop in response to reinforcement or punishment (Feldman Landry, 2014, p. 15). Reinforcement increases the likelihood of someone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A firm can initiate strategic management once it forms a mission statement. The Vision: JetBlue s 2005 annual report features a quotation from then CEO David Neeleman that serves as a summation of company vision: As JetBlue continues to grow, we know our commitment to friendly, helpful service, combined with amenities customers want, will continue to keep JetBlue #1 in the eyes of our customers ( JetBlue Annual Report, 2005). That statement reads well within that six year old annual report. JetBlue has grown substantially since 2005 and Neeleman since has been replaced by Dave Barger as CEO ( JetBlue Annual Report, 2010). Barger could expand on the Neelman s vision and offer the following vision in 2011: JetBlue s vision is one of continual emphasis on providing competitive rates for customers for all of our destinations. We will strive to maintain our industry standard lowest cost per mile, and will continually seek new strategies and technologies that keep down the costs for every one of our flight routes. Mental pleasures are intrinsically superior to physical pleasures, as well as circumstantially. The evidence Mill appeals to in support of his claim that there are different kinds of pleasures and that some are superior to others is the experience of mankind. Those who are acquainted with both sorts of pleasures do prefer the higher pleasures. (P.10) I can somewhat agree with Mills that some pleasures can be considered higher than others. • 7. Bells for John Whiteside s Daughter by John Crowe Ransom John Crowe Ransom was one of the most influential writers of his time. As a poet, essayist, and teacher at Vanderbilt University and Kenyon College, Ransom was one of the prominent leaders of the Fugitive Agrarians and the founder of the New Criticism school of literary criticism and the literary journal, Kenyon Review. His works fall into many different literary movements but the majority of his poems fall within the Fugitive Agrarianism, now known as the Southern Renaissance, movement that emphasized classicism and traditionalism. The writers that were part of the Southern Renaissance, including Ransom, gathered to write a collection of essays that promoted and revitalized Southern literature in the United States. They were known for representing the tensions and paradoxes that resulted from the collision of Northern and Southern ideologies (Holmgren para. 3). Comparably, the Fugitive agrarians emphasized traditional poetic forms and techniques, and their poems developed intellectual and moral themes focusing on an individual s relationship to society and to the natural world (Davis para. 1). Both groups were especially focused on the intrusion of Northern industrialism and destruction of Southern agrarian culture. Ransom uses bursts of imagery of rural life that reflects the agricultural aspects that the Southern Renaissance movement stressed. He channels a lot of natural scenery in his poem, Miriam Tazewell, but a darker and more gruesome stage in Winter ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Decline Roman Empire In the period circa 600 B.C.E to 600 C.E., imperial decline and collapse was caused partly by over expansion, a failing economy due to overspending, and external invasions by barbarian tribes as shown by the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 C.E.. One main cause of the decline and collapse of the Roman Empire was over expansion of territory which led to the empire becoming too large to govern successfully and overall decentralization. At its zenith during Pax Romana, the empire extended from the Atlantic Ocean to the Euphrates River in the Middle East and also consisted of parts of North Africa. As the empire began expanding farther from its administrative center, the Romans were unable to communicate quickly or effectively enough in order to control their territory. With such a vast empire, Romans struggled to deploy sufficient troops and resources to defend the borders and frontiers from rebellions and external invasions. This also led to the emperor, Hadrian, building his famous wall in order to protect the British Isles from foreign attacks. Furthermore, the Roman Empire became comprised of many different cultures as it expanded. Some conquered people retained their own individual cultural identity by keeping their own religion ... • 11. Badland Lyrics Analysis Something that makes Badlands such a beautiful work of art are the lyrics, which are simple and beautiful enough to make them relatable to nearly anyone who listens to them. Many people have criticized Halsey s lyrics for being generic, however, they are creative and carefully written, but may not appeal to everyone. One of her best lyrics is a fan favorite, you were red, and you liked me because I was blue. But you touched me and suddenly I was a lilac sky, and you decided purple just wasn t for you. This lyric is from the song Colors, which was written about Halsey s brief relationship with Matty Healy from the band The 1975. With your face all made up, living on a screen, low on self esteem so you run on gasoline, from her song Gasoline. This song describes how Halsey feels like she is an outsider to society and she feels that people are confused by her as she grows more and more popular. The lyric, which is from the chorus, is her describing what she sees other people as. She is saying that there s pressure to conform and not be true to whom one really is, and if people don t have much confidence they will follow popular trends to fit in and be accepted in society. Even though Halsey is very unique and different, even she still feels the pressure due to fame, and she feels that she s living on a screen. Finally, what is possibly the best lyric from Badlands is from the song Control: I m bigger than my body; I m colder than this home. I m meaner than my demons; I m bigger than these bones. Throughout the song, Halsey describes her struggles with having bipolar disorder since she was a teenager. She has been very open about having the disorder, even going so far as to discuss it with several interviewers. Compare And Contrast Martin Luther King And Religion Early on in his famous letter, Martin Luther King Jr. writes: I have the honor of serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership conference (King 2). He uses religion to back up his claims and shows how his actions are morally supported by the Bible, people fighting injustice beyond their homeland is nothing new, and King argues that by doing so he is following the religious texts he and the other clergymen live their life by. King brings in examples from his religion to further his argument that one must oppose unjust laws using nonviolent direct action. King is accused of being an extremist, to which he responds: Will we be extremists for hate or for love? (King 26). A bold statement, phrasing action as having two distinct sides. King strongly disavows the white moderate who stands to the side and waits for justice to come with time, instead of fighting for justice in the moment. He is quick to refer to the Bible when addressing the clergymen: Was not Paul an extremist for the Christian gospel? (King 25). Using a rhetorical question with a biblical reference to make those who consider him an extremist, rethink if being an extremist is such an ill position to be in. He continues to use biblical imagery to support his point, citing that he is an extremist for love as so many were before him, including several prominent figures from Christianity. Even Jesus Christ, he states was an extremist for love, truth and goodness (King 26). We are presented in James Wright s poem with several images which are actually distinct, though they are loosely connected by situation, but is for us connected with them by neither logic nor association. A great majority of the images that occur in the poem are based off of the basic senses such as our auditory and visual senses. Although almost basic in a sense, the content of the poem uses our own natural, human senses to express this aura of mediocrity and usualness. At first glance, one would wonder about the unusually long title of this poem. The title, although extensive, gives readers an exact location. In this case, that would be Pine Island, Minnesota. Oddly enough, a specific location actually brings about a sense of anonymity, considering it is somewhere as out of pocket and normal as Minnesota. The author chose such a place to make readers picture the conceived rural image associated with states like Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, and so forth. The cause for immigrating depends on the environment and the circumstances that will cause some people to feel they must leave their country to solve their lives. In doing so, however, they leave everything behind to begin a new journey that may not be the way they want it to be. The two short stories A Father by Bharati Mukherjee and My Son the Fanatic by Hanif Kureishi, deal with this issue in the present. • 25. Racism And Racism In Othello Race plays an important role in William Shakespeare s Othello: an intense tragedy of an admired military general, who is driven to kill his wife and himself out of jealously. Othello is of Black African descent, which separates him from many in his Venetian world. Throughout the play, Othello s race is seen as a negative aspect of his character, which is used by the antagonist, Iago, as a weak point to initiate chaos. The play depicts racism and uses the influence of radicalized perspective to create a tragedy. Shakespeare created Othello to be a great leader, a powerful and noble man, to defy Venetian societal views. He did so effectively through the development of varied interpersonal relationships, and how racism effects each of them. When Othello is first introduced into the play, the audience knows that he is a well respected leader. As the play continues, racist and non racist views become quite evident, which eventually effect the actions and ways Othello sees himself. Othello s wife, Desdemona, is a young Caucasian woman, who recognizes Othello for his true self, not his race. She admires the dangers that [he] had passed (1.3.193. Shakespeare, William. Othello), and his abilities as a valiant leader. Desdemona knows that her inter racial marriage is not common, or widely approved of, yet she continues to trumpet to the world (1.3.285. Shakespeare, Othello) her love for him. Her unwavering devotion to Othello is a critical detail because she stays true to her feelings in a world where she is surrounded by discrimination towards Othello. Before Iago approaches Desdemona s father, Brabantio, about their marriage, Othello expresses that [Desdemona s] father loved [him] (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello), and often invited him into their home (1.3.149. Shakespeare, Othello). These examples of characters from the play and their non racist views of Othello prove that Othello is a play that illustrates racism, not a play meant to offend and segregate against people of colour. Many critics of Othello have suggested that Shakespeare wrote a racist play, and that Shakespeare himself wanted to convince others that even a black man in Venetian society will eventually revert to his violent and animal like ways ... The Origin Of Aboriginal People The Oxford dictionary defines the stolen generation as: The Aboriginal people forcibly removed from their families as children between the 1900s and the 1960s, to be brought up by white foster families or in institutions. But what the Oxford definition cannot tell us is the horrible impacts of the stolen generation on: the stolen children, their families, the Aboriginal culture and Australia as a Nation. The stolen generation was caused by European Australians belief that Aboriginal people were inferior to them, a belief stemming from the fact that the Aboriginal people had not industrialised and therefore they appeared primitive to European Australians who had industrialised in the 1700s. The European Australians also believed that the Aboriginal people were dying out, due to the catastrophic population decline after the European Australians arrived. This decline in the Aboriginal population was mainly caused by the arrival of the European Australians whom brought diseases that they had no immunity for and caused conflict, (such as the frontier wars) that took the lives of many Aboriginal Australians, causing their population to fall from 700 000 in 1788 to 93000 in 1900. • 33. Stakeholder Response For Waiting For Superman Stakeholder Response to Waiting for Superman Stake Holder Group When the word school is mentioned, often, we first think about students and teachers. These two groups roughly describe the educational system. This assignment will focus on teachers as stakeholders in public school districts. Demographic Description In the year of 2011, there were 3.2 million teachers who were employed at public schools throughout the nation, which served close to 50 million children in grades kindergarten through twelfth (Feistritzer, 2011). Currently, to be employed as a teacher in the United States, one must obtain a Bachelor s Degree from an accredited college or university, and be certificated in the state that one wishes to be employed. The certification serves as a teaching credential, which is needed for teachers in all states. America has encountered a change within the teaching profession: concerning, experience, age, credentials, and ethnic background (Feistritzer, 2011). It is almost as if the year of 2005, overturned the trend of older employed teachers (Feistritzer, 2011). A six year survey shows that the amount of teachers under the age of thirty has increased drastically, and that most teachers have earned master degrees. Also, although teaching has been a predominately white profession, more Hispanic and African American teachers were hired between the years of 2005 and 2011 (Feistritzer, 2011). • 34. Thomas Hobbes And The Political Philosophy Thomas Hobbes was, as we know, a 17th century British philosopher. We learn in this module that Hobbes was the creator of the political philosophy known as social contract theory and that he was also an egoist. By the revelation of the latter one could easily infer, before diving deeper, that this philosophical theory is based on the inherent selfishness of man. This assumption would, of course, be correct. Hobbes believed that all of mankind is inherently selfish and that to obtain a peaceful and civilized society we had to give up those base desires in the name of security. The idea being that I give up my right to murder my neighbor so that my neighbor is not allowed to murder me. You give up your right to do things that could possible harm other people so that other people do not harm you doing those same things. Hobbes argued that, without an authority to enforce this social contract, man would revert to a State of Nature in which there would be no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by Sea; no commodious Building; no Instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no Knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of Time; no Arts; no Letters; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; And the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short . • 35. Cell Phones As A Moderator For The Relationship Between... Cell phone dependency as a moderator for the relationship between passive cell phone interaction and situation awareness INTRODUCTION Klauer et al. (2014) found a positive correlation between the use of cellular phones (hands free or handheld) and the rate of traffic accidents and distraction. These mobile phones, which are now capable of not only answering calls, but are also capable of playing games, text messaging, browsing the internet, etc. are now attainable for a vast number of individuals. According to the Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA; 2015), there were over 377 million U.S. mobile phone subscriptions by the end of 2015. With the increased availability and technological abilities of mobile phones, has come the ability of individuals to stay connected to their device and social networks throughout the entirety of the day. When used during leisure, mobile phones can be quite useful; however, when mobile phones are used during cognitively demanding situations (e.g., driving) there can be many negative results stemming from distraction. Even with myriad data showing the potential negative effects of phone interaction (e.g., Klauer, Dingus, Neale, Sudweeks, Ramsey, 2006; Strayer William, 2001; Klauer, et al., 2014), many users still choose to use their phone while driving. In fact, according to a 2011 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control, 33% of U.S. drivers reported using their mobile phone while driving at least once during the ... Queen Victoria once said Let women be what God intended, a helpmate for man, but with totally different duties. Once married, all the belongings of the women were given by law to men which restricted in what women were allowed and could do during that era which lead to women being entirely dependent on their husbands. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A spiritual journey dominates these songs, but the concern for physical freedom is there as well. The most pervasive image in the spirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line I am bound for Canaan in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret communication. Some songs, such as Steal Away to Jesus, were used to call a secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as Wade in the Water served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently ...
