Analysis Of The Poem I A Sad Daughter By Michael Ondaatje
Michael Ondaatje uses a unique approach on how a father can communicate affectionately to his
teenage daughter through the use of dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue, otherwise
known as a persona poem, is a monologue in which the character is talking to an unidentifiable
listener at a dramatic moment in the speaker s life. One of Canada s greatly renowned authors,
Ondaatje, is a native of Sri Lanka, but became a Canadian citizen as a young adult. He is well
known for his novel, An English Patient , which was made into an Academy Award winning movie
(Davis). Ondaatje s poem, To a Sad Daughter, is a first person narrative written in free verse. To a
Sad Daughter , follows the character development of the daughter as she pursues her fascination in
hockey. As the narrator recollects memories concerning his daughter, he describes his admiration
for the type of person that she is; mentioning that he adores her moods, her flaws, and her
eccentricity. He would use the term lovehowever, the daughter is uncomfortable when he expresses
that amount of affection towards her. One of the common fallacies about a father s relationship
with his children is that they are irrationally strict; nonetheless, Ondaatje s use of subtle figurative
language, organic imagery, and tone in To a Sad Daughter contradicts this misconception by
discussing a father and daughter s relationship through the father s perspective. Foremost, Ondaatje
applies sophisticated figurative language through

Impact Of Globalization On The Chinese Economy Essay
Globalization is an important term that is partially responsible for an economic revolution that
took place around the world. Theodore Levitt, a former Harvard Business Review editor, coined
the term globalization and used it for the first time in one of his articles in 1983 (Los Angeles
Times magazine, 2006). According to the Business Dictionary, globalizationcan be defined as the
worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration
(businessdictonary.com). China can be considered as an excellent example to demonstrate
globalization. When Deng Xiaoping was elected as the Communist Party leader, he brought about
economic reforms that opened the Chinese economy to the rest of the world and later introduced
itself into the World Trade Organization(WTO) in 2001 (bbc.co.uk, 2006). Hence, expanding the
growth rate of the Chinese economy, which has been constantly rising over the past decade. As
of 2016, China is the second largest economy in the world with a GDP of $12.9 billion USD,
and will continue to grow following the trail the United States (money.cnn.com, 2016). The
emergence of China and its success as a powerful economy in the world can be partially credited
to globalization. The following paper focuses on both the positive and negative ways in which
China has been affected by globalization and its outcome that has placed China to where it is
today. Globalization has greatly helped the Chinese economy to expand in terms of Gross

A leader is a person who inspires. He brings the best out of his people and they, in turn, follow him

creates a shared passion for a common objective.
In order to be effective, a leader must first believe in his vision so as to be able to convey his
thoughts to others and consequently convince them of the importance of his idea. As a result, such

BIOGRAPHY
Born on September 18, 1971 in Plano Texas, Lance Armstrong began his athletic career by taking
part at the age of 13 in athletic activities such as triathlon. When he turned 16, Lance focused on
cycling, what would later become his passion and point of recognition to the world. Four years
later Lance won the National Amateur Cycling Championship and in 1993 he won the Pro
Cycling Tour s Triple Crown, a major cycling event in the States. At the Olympic Games of 1996,
he suffered from fatigue and bronchitis disappointing his fans by finishing in the twelfth place. The
weariness he felt and the illnesses he suffered were justified later that year when he was diagnosed
with cancer. When the diagnosis was made, Lance was already at the third and final stage of
testicular cancer, where cancer had already spread in his lungs and brain. Five months after the
diagnosis Lance began training again and in 1998 he returned to racing, sponsored by the U.S.
Postal Service. During his two year absence, Lance created the Lance Armstrong Foundation. It was
trough the foundation that Lance met his future wife, Kristin Richard with which he has tree
children. In 1999, just three years after his treatment for cancer, Lance won the Tour de France,
leading the entire race and proving to the world his renewed capabilities. In 2001, Armstrong was
given a clean bill of health which meant that during

A Brief Biography of Antonio Vivaldi
Introduction Vivaldi is one of the most well known composer and conductor in the baroque
period. A search about his life time has been conducted in this research paper. Although he was
forgotten for a couple of years, his most famous music piece The Four Seasons is still played to
this date. The Four Seasons will be analyzed by dividing it into its four different sonnets
Vivaldi s Life Antonio Vivaldiwas a baroque musician born in Venice to a father that was a
violinist. His father was his only important teacher, and they sometimes played the violin
together in church. Antonio was born into a large family. He had four brothers and four sisters.
He was taught to play the violin at a young age with his father who then took him on a playing
tour in Venice. When he was fifteen, he began studying to become a priest. He became a priest
in 1703. Vivaldi was known as the red priest due to his bright red hair. Kings and princes knew
him and he was asked to play for them. He was a violin teacher, composer, and conductor for
most of his life at the music school of Pieta, when he was 25, an orphanage for girls in Venice.
He also wrote for Venetian opera houses. He is best known for his 450 or more concerti grossi
and solo concertos although he has composed operas and church music. He had a suffered from a
medical problem called tightening of the chest, or as we may know it the asthma. However, his

return for 25 years. The Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution (Constitution)

Censorship In China Research Paper
China s Method of Censorship Online In an average, everyday American life after school or work
they would go home and do homework, or eat some kind of snack. If they have any special plans or
a sport so to speak, they would do those sorts of things, but if not this is usually when the
technology starts to come into play. Laptops, computers, tablets, phones, Ipods. All these things
have access to the internet, better yet, they thrive on it. All of these electronic devices almost have
no use without the internet. All this information and knowledge, uncensored and completely open
to the public eye, this is what it is like in one place, but it s slightly different in another. In China
they might follow the same rhyme or reason, but over all the internet, time is generally shortened.
This is because of how limited the internet is. China s internet is censored by a firewall the Chinese
government put up. The Chinese government blocks almost all communication sites, makes large
companies censor their online content if they want to be allowed on the Chinese internet, and is
doing all this without the bulk of their population finding out. Sending an email, posting a selfie,
tweeting, or even just updating your status, these are all things that are not permitted within the
borders of China. On July 7th 2009 China blocked two of the biggest social media... Show more

capture Robin Hood by hosting an archery tournament. The prize of the tournament would be a
golden arrow. Robin went, didn t get caught, won the golden arrow, and sent a small letter to the
Sheriff. The letter said: Now Heaven bless thy Grace this day Say all in sweet Sherwood For thou

Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale
The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of
Athens. Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness;
initially exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters,
Palmon and Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood
brothers, leave each other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is
a very impulsive decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also,
they act like mortal enemies after just seeing her, so this thoughtprocess was completely impulsive
and based on her looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released
from his imprisonment sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye
s chamber. I believe this shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being
honest with her, which shows he was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the
little things that she liked, not her personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the
little conversing they shared, so they learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that
the friendship was growing and not an intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story
goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been released from prison. And they happen to both
decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront each other, each claiming the right to
Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each other. Honestly, I believe they
are being impulsive and violent, they still barely knew Emelye (especially Palmon), and they
decide to go kill each other. Then here shows up Theseus, which a loving and wise duke, but he
can also be a little impulse when it comes to violence (which is fairly normal for a duke in the
1390s). Theseus tries to be loving when he sees the two men fighting, but he changes his mindwhen
he found out it was Palmon and Arcite fighting. And that they were fighting because they love
Emelye. Then Theseus was about to respond by killing them, but his loving wife and Emelye
intervened, pleading for their lives. They pleaded

Red Badge of Courage Essay
To Be or Not to Be... A Man The Red Badge of Courage written by Stephen Crane is a prime
example of bildungsroman, or a coming of age story. Crane begins with a cowardly boy, Henry
Fleming, and ends with an experienced war hero who has learned not just what war really is, but
who he really is. Mark Twain once said, The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man
who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. [Epigraph] Although he struggles to learn that being a
soldier means more than just showing up at battle, Henry uses the influences of the attitudes, events,
and his own inner thoughts to complete his metamorphosis psychologically and morally. He also
learns that he may have to sacrifice himself at some point to save... Show more content on

Henry fights with himself on the issue of if he is ready for this war or not when he contemplates
on whether he would run away during battle or stay in combat. He views the war as almost a
dream at first, visioning marches, sieges, conflicts, hoping that he would encounter challenges like
these (Crane 4). He would soon come to find however, that war was nothing like he imagined. This
realization leads to his psychological transformation and growth and sets the stage for Henry s
journey of becoming a man through battles and deaths that prepare him to evolve into the hero he is
later. It is most clearly seen that Henry starts to make this psychological transition from boy to man
at the beginning of his war experience in the story. Henry realizes that a man became another thing
in battle (Crane 19). Although he does not actually demonstrate how he has become another thing
in the first battle when he retreats, Henry becomes more of a fighting man instead of a young boy.
This is shown through his thoughts about how he needs to return to his regiment and stick to what
he committed to. On his journey to escape, the sights he encounters push his development along.
Such sights included were witnessing a dead man in a green chapel and discovering that a red
badge is a sign of honor and an accomplishment in war. It is noticed that he starts to think in terms
of a soldier,

The validity of the informed consent should consist of three factors. First, the patient is competent
to give an informed consent by verbalizing or acknowledging understanding of the nature of the
treatment plans. Second, the patient should give consent willfully without an undue influence or
threat from other individuals. Third, the patient should receive full disclosure, including the risks,
and benefits of the treatment plans from his or her physician (McInroy, 2005).
The ethical principles of beneficence, and nonmaleficence from a patient who is refusing blood
transfusion believed that refusal of this treatment would honor the benefits over harm. Based on
the values practiced among the Jehovah s Witness members, the harm resulting from receiving
the blood transfusion will cause a dismissal in achieving an eternal salvation. Nevertheless, the
harm resulting from refusing the blood transfusion will create less harm, which is the end of one
s mortal life on earth. The belief of the Jehovah s Witness members pertains to a rational decision,
which the eternal salvation preferred substantially compared with the additional years of
temporary life on earth (Macklin, 2003). The ethical principle of justice from a patient pertains to
a fair, and equal provision of respect regardless of the patient s cultural or religious beliefs.

Saying Farewell To A Faithful Pal, By John Grogan
Animals Care for Humans Animals have been there for us, even if we made the choice to leave
them, they still decided to stay by our sides. Every new experience can make a person change,
sometimes the change is negative and other times it is positive. Either way, there is no avoiding
change. Animals are protective, understanding, and very helpful. One positive change of a
protective animal is in the memoir, Saying Farewell to a Faithful Pal, by John Grogan. He
became a primitive killer for lusting for the blood of his enemy, and up to this moment he had
no enemies (Grogan, pg. 146, pp. 4). This quote tells me that Charley murdered a bear for the
safety of his owner. Charley played a role of a hero to protect his owner from the bear, but in John
s eyes, he was a maniac. To conclude, Charley changed from a tolerant and behaved animal, to a
furious protector. But he was still preventative for the safety of others.... Show more content on

The Other Side Of The Sky Farah Ahmedi Analysis
To undertake a mission means to set a goal for yourself means to set a goal for yourself to
accomplish. People are determined and work hard to reach their goals. For example, Farah
Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg to reach freedom. Aengus traveled long and hard
to find love. Rikki Tikki Tavi was determined on killing the snakes and saving his new family.
These characters had different reasons for pursuing their goals and doing what they did. Ahmedi
wanted freedom, Rikki Tikki wanted to protect his new family, and Aengus was set on finding
love; however all three shared the determination to accomplish their goal. Farah Ahmedi The
Other Side of the Sky by Farah Ahmedi is a truly inspiring story about a girl and her mother s
journey to reach freedom. They were Afghans, living in a dangerous city and their only hope was
to escape to Pakistan. Once they finally reached the border, there was already people there ..pushing
and shoving and jostling up against the gate (Ahmedi 11). However, its gates were closed to
refugees, so Ahmedi and her mother were now stranded in the desert. Through that, Ahmedi was
still determined on getting to Pakistan and learned that the secret to getting across the border was to
bribe the guards, but they had no money. During this dire situation, Ahmedi made friends with
another family who took pity on them. Ghulam Ali, the father, learned about a smuggler s path and

Essay Manipulation of Lyrics in Shakespeare s As You Like It
Manipulation of Lyrics in As You Like It
While it is a comedy of the turmoil of love and the experimentation with gender roles and identity,
William Shakespeare s As you Like It is a historical preservation of Renaissance music. The play is
fraught with spontaneous song and poetry, yet Shakespeare strategically manipulates these musical
elements. Specifically, the lyrics and poetry of the play function to establish a soundtrack and a
direct appeal to their Elizabethan audience, while providing Shakespeare with a valuable shorthand
for character development.
It is necessary to understand that music in Shakespeare s time functions as a complete renovation of
sound, voice, and function. Paul Brian emphasizes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

No enemy
But winter and rough weather (1 8).
While this song obviously functions to contrast the sharp melancholy of Jacques, Long suggests its
worthwhile placement on As You Like It s imaginary soundtrack: Its subject and structure suggest a
song suitable for singing by a convivial group. It is, perhaps, a drinking song appropriate for a
group of mock foresters to sing or to enjoy as listeners (143). This incorporation of a song that fits
into the popular communal genre while countering the woeful tone of Jacques is a rather cinematic
choice on Shakespeare s part. It likens him to almost a film director who makes choices on
effective musical selections.
We also must notice Shakespeare s choice of borrowed lyrics when considering the music of the
play as a soundtrack. Much like today s film moguls, Shakespeare seeks to include familiar lyrics
to attract attention to his work. In Act 3, scene 3, Touchstone spouts a fragmented verse: O, sweet
Oliver/O, brave Oliver/Leave me not behind thee [...] (82 84).
Pattison acknowledges that this fragment belongs to a popular Renaissance poem:

Second Grade General Elementary Classroom Observation
For my observation, I observed a second grade general education classroom at Emmanuel
Children s Mission. The day of my observation, I met with Mrs. Cooper, the classroom teacher to
go over the purpose of me examining her classroom, which is to observe three students. I
observed two boys and a girl, one African American boy and the other boy and girl were
Hispanic. They all were seven years old. Student A, the African American boy according Mrs.
Cooper, he is on the spectrum and receives small group instruction through RTI. Student B, who
is the Hispanic boy he is learning well thus far, without any signs of a learning disability and so
is student C, the girl. The math lesson that was taught is addition, the objectives of the lesson
was to add three or more numbers, to decompose a number in three or more addends and to solve
problems by decomposing numbers. For example, the students had to solve how many ways the
penguins can get to the carnival. There were a total of ten penguins and the first problem was to
use four ice bergs, placing the ten penguins on the ice bergs to get the total sum of ten penguins.

concept, they use four ice bergs. They put one penguin on the first ice berg, on the second ice berg
they put two penguins, the third ice berg they put three penguins, and the fourth ice berg they put

Zara Is A High End Street Store
Zara is a high end street store offering the latest tastes in fashion for women, men, and children
alike. Amancio Ortego, Zara s founder, has made the store grow with rapid success in both its
home country, Spain, and internationally. One of the distinct reasons why Zara is such a unique
company compared to its competitors is its foundation of the quick response system. Today, Zara
s cycle time is six weeks, in which it responds to its customers demand very quickly, unlike most
stores that take half a year. Overall, Zara is distinct from most apparel stores in its ability to travel
globally and from its international strategy. Zara has been expanding into new territories since its
initial expansion into Portugal in the 1989. Throughout its international development, Zara has kept
its central distribution center in Arteixo, Spain, where the satellite distribution centers are sourced
from the centralized center in Spain. All of Zara s products go through this distribution center, and
this strategy has its costs and benefits. The distribution center in Arteixo allows Zara to manage its
inventory all in one place, and the warehouse [is] a place to move merchandise rather than to store
it . This allows Zara to be efficient and respond quickly to customer demands, given that none [of
the merchandise] ever stayed at the distribution center more than three days . Through this
warehouse, Zara has ease of access of providing for Spain and its neighboring countries; however,

Project on Employee Attitude
IntroductionThe world economy nowadays is increasingly characterized as a service economy.
This is primarily due to the increasing importance and share of the service sector in the economies
of most developed and developing countries. In fact, the growth of the service sector has long been
considered as indicative of a country s economic progress.Economic history tells us that all
developing nations have invariably experienced a shift from agriculture to industry and then to the
servicesector as the main stay of the economy. This shift has also brought about a change in the
definition of goods and services themselves. No longer are goods considered separate from
services. Rather, services now increasingly represent an integral part of the... Show more content on

Natural Resource Depletion And The Sustainability Of...
While human fertility does appear to be declining, world population is expected to reach ten times
that of year 1800, with an expected 10 billion people by the late 21 century (Bongaarts 2009). An
increase in human population and related natural resource depletion and environmental degradation
are cause for global concern. There are a number of challenges to managing natural resources given
the increases in human population today and into the future. The relationship between population
growth and environmental degradation is apparent in the increasing energy demands, air and water
pollution and loss of biodiversity. Additionally important is the necessity to maintain sustainable
food crops for growing populations. Meeting the needs of a growing population has enormous
bearing on how and where this resource retrieval will affect biodiversity and the sustainability of
natural resources. Increasing global human population will have interchanging effects on ecosystem
services; create difficulties in the ability to produce adequate levels of sustainable food through
crop production and hunting; place increasing pressures on land for human habitation; create a
greater potential for human wildlife conflict; and most urgently, increase the potential for climate
change effects as a result of human induced activities that result in emissions of greenhouse gases.

Analysis A Look behind the Veil
Analysis Project of A Look Behind the Veil
Thesis statement: Middle Eastern and North African clothing culture is distinguished from other
cultures by the veil, a clothing that provokes many reactions from authors and debates between the
Western and Eastern people.
Subject:
The main topic of this text is the veil in North African and Middle Eastern regions. Western people
and Middle Eastern people do not share the same opinion about its use, while the occidental region
considers it as a simple cloth, sometimes it is even considered as humiliating, the Middle Eastern
region gives an important value to it due to its religious and historical significance. Many authors
from different countries debated about the pros and cons of wearing ... Show more content on

Concerning the social context, honor and respect are two significant values that the hijab
represents. By wearing the hijab, a woman is less likely to be attractive to men and being
approached by them, she creates a barrier that implements respect between her and another person,
by consequent, she preserves her sexual chastity and keeps the family s honor intact. This is an
important detail in the Middle East culture; honor is more a group matter than an individual matter,
and in this case, honor s family is related to women s sexual abstinence before marriage; in case
the honor is lost, it can t be regained.
Another aspect of the veil is the identity value, many women from different countries affirmed
they feel that the veil is part of them; it is so important for them that many women [...] feel self
conscious, vulnerable, and even naked when they first walked on a public street without the veil
[...] as if they were making a display of themselves paragraph 22
Despite all the values that the hijab is representing in different countries of the world, the only value
that is demanded is the egalitarianism and justice value, whether a woman is wearing the veil or
not, they are calling for equal access to divorce, child custody, and inheritance; equal opportunities
for education and employment; and abolition of

Analysis Of The Negro Question And John Stuart Mill
Carlyle and Mill And Their Differences Of Opinion On Nature, Agriculture, and Humanity
Thomas Carlyle s Occasional Discourse On The Negro Question and John Stuart Mill s responding
essay, The Negro Question, primarily deal with the implications of a liberated black population in
the West Indies. However, the texture of their respective arguments lends itself to rhetoric of nature
and agriculture. Carlyle and Mill could not see humanity s relationship with nature more differently.
Due to different understandings of humanity s relationship with nature,
Carlyle and Mill s evaluation of agricultural productivity varies, thus informing their representation
of blacks in the West Indies.

Instead, Mill derives satisfaction from nature s action, citing its
spontaneous activity as the source of his enjoyment. In this sense, it could be suggested that
Mill sees the betterment of humanity as tethered to the betterment in nature, as increased action
from nature provides increased satisfaction to humanity. Unlike Carlyle, this sets up humanity s
relationship with nature as mutual, if not subservient. To Mill, it is essential that humanity aids and
works with nature, rather than extract from it.
The differences in Carlyle and Mill s understandings of nature reflect themselves in their represented
approaches to agriculture in Occasional Discourse On The Negro Question and The
Negro Question, respectively. Carlyle sees agriculture as the system capable of producing items that
are valuable to humans. Mill, on the other hand, recognizes agriculture as an ongoing and hopefully
mutually beneficial relationship between earth and human. Their differences in opinions are best
represented in their respective treatments of commodities and land use.
Throughout the Occasional Discourse Carlyle harps on the shame of cultivating pumpkins. In fact,
there is a moment in the text when Carlyle uses the phrase merely pumpkinish as a means to belittle
the efforts of the West Indies farmers. Instead of pumpkins,
Carlyle seeks commodities of bright, blaring, obvious value from the West Indies. He emphasizes

types of history occurred: political, economic, and military. The conclusion of the paper will be a
restatement of the main ideas, and my personal opinion on the film.
In the beginning of the movie, Michael Apted introduces William Wilberforce as a young
abolitionist. William lives in a society that is racist and prejudice to anyone not of their skin
color. Great Britain in the late 1700 s, was a society dominated by the upper class who opposed
changes in their way of life. To achieve this they lived a glamorous life, looking down on those
below them in the social order. At first William does not outright show his feeling about slaverybut
subtly shows it by being a worker of God. To him a worker of God was one who made decisions
and based their actions upon what they believed God wanted. In the beginning of the film, As a
game of poker occurs with other members of Parliament in a bar, William plays against the Duke
of Clarence a strong believer in slavery. The duke gambles off his young black coach driver, and
Wilberforce slams down his cards in anger and storms off. Although he

the requirements to become a mortician, also called funeral director or undertaker, the duties the job

A lot of the time the mourners will vent their pent up anger on the funeral director and will blame
you for their problems. Some of time you ll need to deal with religions new to you and that seem
strange, but you ll have to be understanding and willing to let the mourners carry out their forms of
burial and mourning. In other words, can you handle a career that requires constant sensitivity to
needs and wants of other people?
One of the duties of a mortician is to embalm the corpse for show. quot;If the body is not to be
buried within twenty four hours, most communities require that it be embalmed quot;(IRN 6). After
the body is brought to the funeral home, you would see first of all that the body and hair are
cleaned and washed for embalming. A small incision is made at the base of the neck or in the
groin to secure access to a major artery or vein. quot; The object in embalming is to pump our the
body fluids, or blood, and to replace it with special long lasting chemicals which will keep the
body from decaying for a long period of time and which will prevent it from further disease or
decay, if death has been caused by a specific infectious disease. quot;(Lamers 420). Tubes are then
inserted in the artery or vein. The tube in this artery is connected to a mechanical pump that injects

Lowry s True Colors System
When first reading about Lowry s True Colors system, I immediately assumed that the results of
this quiz would have little to no effect on my understanding of not only my personality type and
behavioral style, but others as well. After completing this quiz, I can honestly say that my initial
assumption was utterly wrong. Admittedly, my opinion was altered when I received a high score of
19 in the bluecolorspectrum category, and was able to affiliate almost all of the general
descriptions of the color blue with myself. Even though I was able to connect with most of the
blue color descriptions, there happened to be a few that practically popped off the scream and
screamed my name. These attributes include my specialty of valuing close relationships, staying
true to myself, and getting involved in causes. As I was reading the blue description list, one
quality particularly caught my eye; the ability to value close relationships. I believe that this
attribute most closely relates to my personality and behavior because of how much I appreciate
and love my family and friends. For instance, even though I am a freshman in an unfamiliar
town, far away from all the people I care about, I still make time everyday to get in touch with
them and check up on them. To tell the truth, it isn t the easiest task, as a busy college student, to

The Legacy Of The United States
Democracy is the feat on which the united states prides itself. This democracy was built over the
ages and over many events through trial and error. By analyzing the history of the Monroe
Doctrine, the two elections in which Andrew Jackson was voted a president, the theory of John C.
Calhoun, and the Cherokee Nation vs Jackson trail we can arrive at the strengths and shortcomings
of the American democracyin the period between 1820 and 1836.
After the revolutionary war and the war of 1812 the United States had to enforce their independence
and establish themselves as a political entity. This declaration of their political influence came in

The democratic republican party which ran uncontested in the elections of 1824 had split due to a
rift which was created between the ideas of nationalism and sectionalism. On one side Andrew
Jackson ran with his Jacksonian Democracy platform and Adams who has now been considered
and elitist. However, the expansion of democracy came from the states new relaxed voting laws
which in Pennsylvania went as far as allowing all adult males, while in other states had a
requirement of being a taxpayer like in the case of Tennessee. This is clearly the main factor in
the doubling of the voter participation rising from 26.9 to 57.6 percent. At the same time states
were abolishing appointment and moving into popular vote for many positions like state officials
and judges. In fact, South Carolina was the only state in which appointment prevailed by 1832.
These two changes also inspired a reform in the political thinking and electioneering bringing a
new type of politician on the pedestal: the politician who has good popular appeal, a powerful
voice, and great leadership skills. The politician who can rally the people and excite them.
During the next elections in 1832 a third part joined in response to a despotic conspiracy which was
theorized against the Masonic fraternal order. This party called themselves the Anti Masonic party,
and believed that the masons are puppeteering the government. Their goals and ideas aside, they

Pros And Cons Of Anarchy
Over the course of human events, philosophers have presented their ideologies about what roles a
government should have as well as what are the functions of that said government. At many times,
these philosophers have clashed in their ideologies however, each philosopher recognizes one
possible state of being; anarchy. Anarchy is a stateof disorder in which there is no official form of a
systematic governmentrule. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Mearsheimer,
Ikenberry, and Gilpin all acknowledge and agree that a state of anarchy can exist but they
disagree in whether anarchy is good or bad. Anarchy in a state of nature is conflictual, thus it is
a problem. Politics in a state of anarchy is either conflictual by nature or can lead to prospects for
cooperation. Aristotle argue that anarchy, in a state of nature, is conflictual, and Locke argues
that anarchy can lead to cooperation. In an anarchic society there are no laws, limitations, or
regulations and as a result there is chaos which lead to arguments and disputes. In a systematic
government, there is stability and security; you have someone of a higher status to go to find a
solution to your troubles but when you get rid of the hierarchy people lose that sense of security
and stability and as a result are forced to provide these securities form themselves. From what
Aristotle states Hence it is evident that the state is a creation of nature, and that man is by nature a
political animal. And he who by

Rhetorical Analysis Of Jamaica Kincaid
Rhetorical Analysis Essay Jamaica kincaid: rough draft
Jamaica Kincaid successfully convinces her audience that post colonial impact still remains.
Through the use of rhetorical appeals such as pathos, logos and imagery she successfully
explains her claim. Through this novel she gives an insightful explanation of what antigua is like
from a person who comes from that area. Kincaid being born in antigua, she gives us a view from
her eyes on what antigua is really like while going through post colonial impact. Kincaid
incorporates historical background in text to convince her audience that this impact is holding back
antigua from the good and enjoyable place it can really be. She develops a connection with the
audience when she makes them feel like the tourist that is figuring out what s going on in the
background of antigua. This connection serves as pathos as it makes the audience feel the emotion
of anger and disappointment for not knowing what mess is really going on in this small island. This
demonstration shows how cultures everywhere are affected by postcolonialism and how there is a
negative global commonality between tourist and natives.
It was very impactful being put in the tourist seat while reading this novel. In the beginning of
the story as the tourist i am being exposed to all this negativity which i came here in the first

Life And Dedication Of An Organization
As I peered through the window of opportunity, which I thought would be an easy adventure,
time and dedication surely proved me mistaken. One average senior high day, I walk into the
Human Services classroom and sit down at my desk. The class writes the daily five minute prompt
about the service we are hoping to be involved in for FCCLA (Family Career and Community

prompt, the class sets up the desks to have our monthly FCCLA meeting. I, being the President,

discussion to our chapter s current funds and finally begin to go into detail about STAR events. In
an organized manner, we list the events and information pertaining to which people are planning on

I decide to work with Angela, who happens to be our chapter s Vice President, and Molly, the

The Milgram Experiment Violates Three Of The Five...
The Milgram Experiment violates three of the five principles outlined in the Five General
Principles of Ethics. Milgram wanted to see if there was a connection between the conflict
between obedience to authority and personal conscience (McLeod, 2007). Milgram s hypothesis
that he based his experiment on was How the German people could permit the extermination of
the Jews? (Dan Chalenor, 2012). The first one that Milgram s experiment violated was Principle
A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence which is where psychologists strive to benefit those with
whom they work and take care to do no harm (Ethical principles, 2013, p. 3, para. 3). The second
principle that was violated was Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility which is where... Show

Lastly, this experiment violated Principle E because it caused people to question if they were a
good person or not considering they were causing harm to another person that could have been
avoided. The moderators of the experiment were not respecting the subjects due to the fact that
are causing unnecessary stress. Personally, researching this experiment made me extremely
uncomfortable just because I do not believe in causing unnecessary harm to someone who does
not deserve it. In this case, harm is the unnecessary stress since the accomplice of the experiment
was not actually shocked, he just acted like it. I think that the moderators of the experiment,
especially Milgram, should have been upfront in the ad placed in the newspaper over what was
going to actually be happening to the people who volunteered. The way the readings and the
video made it sound was that it was just a surprise over what actually happened to the subjects. It
is shocking to me that he thought that this was something that was morally and ethically right.
This Stanford Experiment violated a few of the Five General Principles of Ethics. The young

Failing or profitable government? There are various types of economies in the the world, of the
various types they can be narrowed down to the two most common which are capitalist and
socialist economies. Capitalism is a way of organizing an economy so that the things that are used
to make and transport products are owned by individual people and companies rather than by the
government (Merriam Webster). Socialismis a way of organizing a society in which major
industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and
companies (Merriam Webster). Every economic systems has pros and cons. Type of organization,

In the state lead economy, the government owns the means of production, but the organization is
ran by capitalists methods. Capitalism promotes competition in the economy which has positive
outcomes. Competition generates higher quality products and more effective techniques in
businesses. Competition is the only reason the government plays a role in capitalism, and that role
is protection from fraud and force. The only purpose of government would be to protect its citizens
from force or fraud (Reisman, George).
Socialism is considered the weak; less effective form of economy. By failing to emphasize
incentives, socialism is a theory inconsistent with human nature and is therefore doomed to fail
(Mark Perry, 1995). It is the type of organization that involves the government owning and
controlling the major industries and prosperous companies in the country. The fact that socialism
disregards private property rights in establishing incentives for economic development and growth
is another reason why socialism fails. Socialism robs citizens of their human rights to private
property, but it does grant the right to an education, to work, and free health care and transportation.
Unlike capitalism that is based on supply and demand, in a socialist economy, the government
regulates the quantity of products produced and distributed. The government also

Ethnic Differences Between The United Kingdom And America
Throughout this paper I will focus on data from the United Kingdom and America and focus solely
on the disadvantages that ethnic minority groups endure which effect their health status. In doing
this, I will highlight several explanations put forth by social scientists, such as cultural,
socioeconomic and racial approaches whilst incorporating different literature, such as the works of
Bartley (2004), Nettleton (2013) and Nazroo (1997). Before exploring the many explanations that
social scientists offer to explain the ethnic differences in health status, it is important to
acknowledge that gathering data on racial or ethnic minorities is extremely problematic. This is
because there are not any universally agreed definitions of ethnic or racial groups and definitions
change over time (Aspinall, 2002). Such problems of the lack of conceptual clarification stem from
whether researchers presume that raceand ethnicity are a biological or a social characteristic. To
overcome this problem, throughout this paper, I will use the term racial or ethnic minority to refer
to any group of people who are exposed to unfavourable treatment because of their national origins,
shared social histories, or religion as outlined in the works of Bartley (2004: 151). Until recent years
there has not been a huge amount of literature exploring the patterns between ethnicity and health
status. The literature that was available often focussed on biomedical explanations or focused on

Why Did The Soviet Union Fail
At the beginning of the Atomic Age, the Soviet Union was perhaps one of the greatest superpowers
in the world. By 1991, it had completely collapsed, splitting into 15 independent states, each with
their own unique national and cultural identities. There were a multitude of factors that led to the
Soviet Union s downfall. Economic stagnation, anti communist sentiment, and nationalist
movements finally brought the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union.
When Mikhail Gorbachev became Secretary of the Communist Party, he had to deal with an ailing
and frail Soviet Union. The country had entered a state of serious economic decline and the Soviet
people, discontent with their political party, looked to Gorbachev to solve their problems. Spurred
by patriotic duty, Gorbachev introduced democratic reforms known as perestroika and glasnost.
These sought to free businesses and Soviet peoples from harsh government regulation and
censorship, respectively. While Gorbachev believed these policies would strengthen the Soviet
government, this was not the case. Perestroika did not do anything to ... Show more content on

As said by Mark R. Beissinger in Nationalism and the Collapse of Soviet Communism , By spring
and summer of 1989, large scale nationalist demonstrations involving hundreds of thousands of
participants had spread across republics and became a relatively frequent affair...The collapse of
communism in Eastern Europe enormously accelerated. 6 After glasnost, people of differing ethnic
identities and religions, who were once united under the tenets of Soviet communism, now felt
disconnected and alienated from one another. These people sought to create nationalist movements
and define their country on their own accords, rather than live under a philosophy that did not apply
to them.7 Considering how rapidly they spread, these nationalist movements sped the fall of Soviet

The, Man And Woman
Ever since Adam and Eve were banished from Eden, man and woman have needed each other to
survive in this world. Unlike in Eden, where both Adam and Eve were created by God to be perfect
beings, once banished, both man and woman were put into a state of dependence; standing alone as
individuals, they would never thrive. This advertisement depicts womanwearing the same pair of
jeans as man. Both are standing on a white fur rug, staring with intense gazes. The man s hand is
bandaged, while the woman is standing with her arms around the man. What is the significance
of the bandage that is wrapped around the man s hand? At first glance, the man seems to be
playing the dominant role in an advertisement for woman s jeans. The man is standing with his
hand bandaged, with a bandage not unlike one that a boxer would wear under his boxing gloves.
The woman s arms are around the man s neck, as if begging for protection. With closer
observation, however, both man and woman are on top of this rug, a rug made out of soft fur,
which could have come from an animal. Woman looks like she is emerging from man; as if man is
Adam, and woman is Eve. In Chapter 1 of Genesis, Rabbinical commentaries hold that man and
woman were originally one entity man was one side of the body, while woman was the other.
Subsequently in Genesis Chapter 2, woman took on her own form, and was created from a bone
of Adam s rib cage. The woman in this advertisement is standing in a position that looks like she is a

George Stein s Role At Eastern Diary Essay
George Stein grew up in the suburbs of a major East Coast city. Inevitably, every summer
between school semesters George likes to work so he can continue he interest saturated lifestyle
which includes showing his girlfriend, Cathy, around to fun events and spending money on his
love of hot rods. This semester, after his freshmen year at college, George managed to secure
himself a comfortable union job which offers overtime and a paycheck far larger than he could
have ever received any previous summer. George s new role at Eastern Diary situated him on
the nightshift team where there were no managers, just a team leader, Paul, who everyone on
the shift looked to for direction. Although Paul and the nightshift crew held a sense of
responsibility for getting their work done, the visible artifacts of horseplay tended to supersede
the overall company s element of culture which includes the safety of the employees and
customers. Their role was to follow the production order of ice cream handed to Paul by the day
shift s superintendent. One night in particular, George found the ice cream production line halted
by maggots clogging up the piping. On an occasion in certain bags of ingredients, likely those of
which were left and forgotten, maggots would get in. In order to save the company money, finish
the shift on time and on order, Paul advised George to release the filters and effectively let the
maggots into the ice cream. Staring down the filters of ice cream and

Essay on Internet Addiction Disorder
The World Wide Web is an intriguing information highway. Its beginnings only date back to the
1990 s, but it has quickly become a major staple in our lives. As with anything there is a good and
bad side. Americans and people around the world are becoming more and more reliant on using the
internet for their informational, academic, social, entertainment, organizational, and connectional
needs. Along with all of the good that this has brought a new disorder is arising, internet addiction

Her definition for internet addiction is excessive internet over use which disrupts a person s sleep
patterns, work productivity, daily routines, and social life (Hardie Ming Yi., 2007).
Others have defined internet addiction in other words. Oktan (2011) has used certain criteria to
describe internet addiction. He says that it is failure to control, decrease or stop internet use, and
staying logged on longer than expected (Oktan, 2011). Both Yen, Yen, Wu, Huang Ko (2011) and
Chak Leung (2004) give characteristics for internet addiction. Yen, et al, (2011) list the
characteristics as: impaired decision making, impairment of control, tolerance, preoccupation,
withdrawal, uses more than one intends, excessive time and effort devoted to the internet. Chak
Leung (2004) list their characteristics of internet addiction as the following: concealment, risk to
education, risk of loss of job, risk of loss of relationship, and lying to friends, family, the therapist,
and others. Weinstein Lejoyeux (2010) believes there are 4 components to internet addiction and in
each component there are different parts to the component. The four components are excessive use,
tolerance, adverse consequences, and withdrawal. The parts to excessive use entail loss of time
and neglect of duties. Tolerance is when more and more of time and effort are needed for
satisfaction and the need for better more extensive equipment. Withdrawal occurs as anger,

The Roaring 20 s And The Great Depression
During my investigation I had a difficult time finding sources for my question. At the beginning
of my research I began searching for the styles of art during the Great Depression and Roaring
Twenties. I did this because I intended to base my research on the question ; What was the change
in visual art from the Roaring 20 s and the Great Depression in the United States? . After finding
information of the question, I realized that my question was mostly about the historyof art and I
could not go into depth about it as a historian would. This is when I changed my question to What
was the impact of the Roaring 20 s and the Great Depression on visual art in the United States? .
After I altered my question I started researching for more sources

Family, Friends And Lovers
In the film, The Emotional Life there was a very interesting episode called Family, Friends and
Lovers . Family, Friends and Lovers reminded me of situations that I have experienced in the past.
I can honestly relate to this episode in so many ways, such as my outlook on family and friends.
The first few people that babies ever know are their family. Infants value their mother/caregiver
more than anyone. From birth they tend to form a bond with their caregiver, in which is known
as attachment. Due to their family members being the first people they interact with they learn
how to relate with people at home. Family relationship is practice to what is next; meaning the
relationships people gain with their family helps them prepare for future relationship with others.
Friendships can be very helpful because no one wants to be lonely. It is quite nice to have
someone else to hang and interact with besides family. It is great to have a friend that you can
connect with. In the episode, Family, Friends and Lovers Harry Harlow Monkey LoveExperiment
was mentioned. In this experiment, he separated infant monkeys from their mothers a few hours
after birth, and then arranged for them to be raised by two kinds of surrogate monkey mothers.
One mother was made out of bare wire mesh and the other was a wire mother covered with cloth.
Given a choice, the infant monkeys preferred the mother covered with soft terry cloth, and they
spent a great deal of time cuddling with them.

The Pantheon Research Paper
The Architectural Significance of the Pantheon
The Pantheon is a magnificent temple that was built during ancient roman times and still stands
today. The design of the Pantheon and the significance of it are directly related to a sun dial and
understanding the way the sun works with the structure. It was originally built by Agrippa around
27 BC but was partially destroyed by a fire. During Hadrian s reign, he rebuilt the Pantheon
enhancing its architecture along with its meaning. This temple was dedicated to all the Gods of
Rome and used as a place to worship them. Hadrian also held judicial court in the temple at times.
The Pantheon became a church specifically, a station church, where the pope would hold special
masses during Lent, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One reason for this is the walls of the Pantheon reach up to 20ft thick making it impossible for
windows. The specific construction of the Pantheon also made it impossible for light to enter at the
entrance when the front doors opened. No direct sunlight can enter from the door in the course of
the whole year, owing to the northward orientation of the entrance doorway (Hannah). This was
unusual for roman temples, as they normally were set to face the south so the sun could illuminate
the temples year round. One explanation of the northern orientation is that the project of the
building was to some extent inspired by a particular type of sundial, which captured the sunlight
within a shadowy interior (Harris). With the Romans giving great significance to the sun and the
detailed position and measurements made in building the Pantheon, researchers have made many
findings to give reason that the Pantheon was some form of a sun dial or astronomical instrument.
At the autumn equinox [September 22n d], the spot of sunlight touches the interior springing of the
upper hemisphere. Then at winter solstice [December 22nd] the spot of sunlight moves up to a
maximum height in the roof over the entrance. Thereafter, it moves down, touching again the base
of the dome at the spring equinox [March 21st]. From the summer solstice [June 21st] the beam
turns back , re crossing the entrance between the end of August and the

Sarah Sorenson Narrative
I learned it too late. Everyone s life matters, even mine. Or at least it did, but now I have no life.
I was ready to give up when I took that bottle of pills, but The Angel knew me better. When I
finally left my human body, The Angel was the one who gave me a new life, a new body, and a
new purpose: save them. In my past life, I was Sarah Sorenson. I was a pretty, popular teenage
girl who could turn heads just by breathing. I was that one girl everyone either wanted to be or be
with. To everyone, I had the perfect life, although no one saw who I truly was. Growing up in New
York City, it is easy for people to just look at the outside and not care what is going on in the
inside. No one saw the girl who was top of her class, or the musical genius, they only saw the
cheerleader who went shopping every weekend on 5th Avenue and dated the cutest guy at school.

Truus Shroder Childhood
All of us together, of course are the words of Truus Schroder that live on today through the house
that she designed alongside Gerrit Rietveld, the renowned Dutch furniture designer and architect.
As a widow, Truus had ideas of family life, specifically that of her children s upbringing, with
which her late husband didn t necessarily agree. Soon after his death she designed her own home
with Rietveld that would embody her ideals fully. She designed her home in a way that contained
both unique special arrangement and visual qualities. She decided that she wanted to live without
walls, as one single family unit. In 1924, with her home in Utrecht completed, Rietveld moved in
with her and her three children, becoming her life partner. Rietveld... Show more content on

It became not only a place of living, but also a place that celebrated creative work and innovative
thinking. Living without walls opens the door to many possibilities. It is much easier to
connect with your children, as was important to Schroder. She felt her children had been
neglected while living with their father since every time she left they were then taken care of
by a housemaid; she thought this must have been horrible for them and wanted them all to live
together. She also wanted to have space in her house in order to celebrate created work. This
was accomplished through the design of the upstairs. It itself was a gallery of ideas ever
changing each time it was experienced. This atmosphere was very stimulating and put forth a
sense of happiness, which was important to her in how she wanted raise her children. Schroder
wrote about this atmosphere she wanted to create in one of her letters stating, This house exudes a
strong sense of joy, of real joyousness. [...] And that s absolutely a question of proportions, and
also of the light; the light in the house and the light outside. I find it very important that a house
has an invigorating atmosphere, that it inspires and supports happiness. Using open space, natural
light, and a modest scale she created a space that embodied happiness and made her children feel
comfortable. Also, she felt the way that her children can move and change the space in order to suit
their needs gives them the sense that it is their home. The act of designed the space and making it

Blood Typing And The Blood Of The Donor Blood
INTRODUCTION:
Blood typing is one of the tests that will determine a person s blood type. Although, all blood is
made of the same basic elements but they are not same by their blood typing. In fact, there are
eight different common blood types. Based on certain substances of antigen presence or absence
and Rh factors we will able to identify the person blood types. Those substances can trigger an
immune response if they are foreign to the body. Blood typing is important when you need a
blood transfusion or planning to have an organ transplant. As we know not all blood types are
compatible due to their antigen and antibodies they have. Since some antigens can react with
person immune system to attack the donor blood, It is very important to know the person s blood
typing and cross matching to ensure that your body doesn t make antibodies to attack the donor
blood or organ. Blood typing is especially important to pregnant mothers when the mother is Rh
and the father has Rh+ and a child born with Rh positive. So, it is important to be an early
cautious in order to avoid reactive consequences. In the medical sector small mistake can take
patient life. In this lab experiment though using the anti A serum, anti B serum, and anti Rh serum,
we were able to identify the blood types of each sample that we had.
MATERIAL AND METHODS:
In order to prepare for this experiment, our professor had given us four different samples of
unknown synthetic blood type. We also had 3 different

Comparing Dziga Vertov s Film, Man with a Movie Camera...
Comparing Dziga Vertov s Film, Man with a Movie Camera and Run Lola Run
The main and essential thing is : the sensory exploration of the world through film. We therefore
take as a point of departure the use of the camera as a keno eye, more perfect than the human eye,
for the exploration of the chaos of visual phenomena that fills space.
Dziga Vertov , Manifesto The Council of Three (1923)
The innovative theories and filmmaking techniques of Dziga Vertov revolutionized the way films
are made today. Man With a Movie Camera (1929), a documentary that represented the peakof the
Soviet avant garde film movement in the twenties, displayed techniques in montage, creative
camera angles, rich imagery, but most importantly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not filming life unawares for the sake of the unawares , but in order to show people without masks,
without makeup, to catch them through the eye of the camera in a moment when they are not
acting... (41 Vertov)
His original ways of thinking, isolated him from all other filmmakers. Even his style of using
montage (editing style commonly used by Soviet directors) in Man with a Movie Camera was
very different. In this film, hours of footage are edited together in many cuts, which is the style
that Vertov is well known for. His cuts are very rapid and he displays them accordingly to music to
add excitement to the sequence. The sequences act on all three levels of montage: narrative,
intellectual, and emotional. For example in the beginning of Man with a Movie Camera, there is a
sequence in a theatre where the cameraman sets up the film for the audience to watch (appendix 1).
The lights come on, the seats go down, the cameraman sets up the projector, the audience enters, the
lights dim, the orchestra awaits and then the manifest begins. The narration comes from the editor
throughout the whole film. The cameraman cannot possibly be the narrator since he is randomly
out of frame and it is a silent film.
From the very beginning... the centrality of the cameraman s vision is put into question, since he
moves out

Analysis Of The Poem I A Sad Daughter By Michael Ondaatje Michael Ondaatje uses a unique approach on how a father can communicate affectionately to his teenage daughter through the use of dramatic monologue. A dramatic monologue, otherwise known as a persona poem, is a monologue in which the character is talking to an unidentifiable listener at a dramatic moment in the speaker s life. One of Canada s greatly renowned authors, Ondaatje, is a native of Sri Lanka, but became a Canadian citizen as a young adult. He is well known for his novel, An English Patient , which was made into an Academy Award winning movie (Davis). Ondaatje s poem, To a Sad Daughter, is a first person narrative written in free verse. The Chinese government blocks almost all communication sites, makes large companies censor their online content if they want to be allowed on the Chinese internet, and is doing all this without the bulk of their population finding out. • 12. Violence, Foolishness, And Impulsiveness In The Knight s Tale The Knight s Tale is one of many tales from the Canterbury Tales. This story sets in the city of Athens. Which opens into the theme of violence, foolishness, impetuousness, and impulsiveness; initially exceedingly emotional responses. One example is when two of our main characters, Palmon and Arcite, both fall in love with Theseus s sister in law (Emelye). These two blood brothers, leave each other after seeing Emelye out of the window of the tower. Which, I believe is a very impulsive decision, for they have not got time to know who she is and her personality. Also, they act like mortal enemies after just seeing her, so this thoughtprocess was completely impulsive and based on her looks. And later, Arcite tries to get to know her better after he was released from his imprisonment sentence by disguising himself, so he can take a job as a page in Emelye s chamber. I believe this shows that he wants to know her, but also it shows he is not being honest with her, which shows he was being impulsive and deceiving. He only learned about the little things that she liked, not her personality. Emelye learned a little bit about Arcite after the little conversing they shared, so they learned a little of each other s personality. This shows that the friendship was growing and not an intimate relationship, like Arcite wanted. So the story goes on and both Palmon and Arcite have been released from prison. And they happen to both decide to wander in the woods. Then they confront each other, each claiming the right to Emelye. The next day, they were brutally hacking away at each other. Honestly, I believe they are being impulsive and violent, they still barely knew Emelye (especially Palmon), and they decide to go kill each other. Then here shows up Theseus, which a loving and wise duke, but he can also be a little impulse when it comes to violence (which is fairly normal for a duke in the 1390s). Theseus tries to be loving when he sees the two men fighting, but he changes his mindwhen he found out it was Palmon and Arcite fighting. And that they were fighting because they love Emelye. Then Theseus was about to respond by killing them, but his loving wife and Emelye intervened, pleading for their lives. They pleaded ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Red Badge of Courage Essay To Be or Not to Be... A Man The Red Badge of Courage written by Stephen Crane is a prime example of bildungsroman, or a coming of age story. Crane begins with a cowardly boy, Henry Fleming, and ends with an experienced war hero who has learned not just what war really is, but who he really is. Mark Twain once said, The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time. [Epigraph] Although he struggles to learn that being a soldier means more than just showing up at battle, Henry uses the influences of the attitudes, events, and his own inner thoughts to complete his metamorphosis psychologically and morally. He also learns that he may have to sacrifice himself at some point to save... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Henry fights with himself on the issue of if he is ready for this war or not when he contemplates on whether he would run away during battle or stay in combat. He views the war as almost a dream at first, visioning marches, sieges, conflicts, hoping that he would encounter challenges like these (Crane 4). He would soon come to find however, that war was nothing like he imagined. This realization leads to his psychological transformation and growth and sets the stage for Henry s journey of becoming a man through battles and deaths that prepare him to evolve into the hero he is later. It is most clearly seen that Henry starts to make this psychological transition from boy to man at the beginning of his war experience in the story. Henry realizes that a man became another thing in battle (Crane 19). Although he does not actually demonstrate how he has become another thing in the first battle when he retreats, Henry becomes more of a fighting man instead of a young boy. This is shown through his thoughts about how he needs to return to his regiment and stick to what he committed to. On his journey to escape, the sights he encounters push his development along. Such sights included were witnessing a dead man in a green chapel and discovering that a red badge is a sign of honor and an accomplishment in war. Every new experience can make a person change, sometimes the change is negative and other times it is positive. Either way, there is no avoiding change. Animals are protective, understanding, and very helpful. One positive change of a protective animal is in the memoir, Saying Farewell to a Faithful Pal, by John Grogan. He became a primitive killer for lusting for the blood of his enemy, and up to this moment he had no enemies (Grogan, pg. 146, pp. 4). Essay Manipulation of Lyrics in Shakespeare s As You Like It Manipulation of Lyrics in As You Like It While it is a comedy of the turmoil of love and the experimentation with gender roles and identity, William Shakespeare s As you Like It is a historical preservation of Renaissance music. The play is fraught with spontaneous song and poetry, yet Shakespeare strategically manipulates these musical elements. Specifically, the lyrics and poetry of the play function to establish a soundtrack and a direct appeal to their Elizabethan audience, while providing Shakespeare with a valuable shorthand for character development. This incorporation of a song that fits into the popular communal genre while countering the woeful tone of Jacques is a rather cinematic choice on Shakespeare s part. It likens him to almost a film director who makes choices on effective musical selections. While human fertility does appear to be declining, world population is expected to reach ten times that of year 1800, with an expected 10 billion people by the late 21 century (Bongaarts 2009). An increase in human population and related natural resource depletion and environmental degradation are cause for global concern. There are a number of challenges to managing natural resources given the increases in human population today and into the future. The relationship between population growth and environmental degradation is apparent in the increasing energy demands, air and water pollution and loss of biodiversity. Additionally important is the necessity to maintain sustainable food crops for growing populations. Meeting the needs of a growing population has enormous bearing on how and where this resource retrieval will affect biodiversity and the sustainability of natural resources. Increasing global human population will have interchanging effects on ecosystem services; create difficulties in the ability to produce adequate levels of sustainable food through crop production and hunting; place increasing pressures on land for human habitation; create a greater potential for human wildlife conflict; and most urgently, increase the potential for climate change effects as a result of human induced activities that result in emissions of greenhouse gases. The differences in Carlyle and Mill s understandings of nature reflect themselves in their represented approaches to agriculture in Occasional Discourse On The Negro Question and The Negro Question, respectively. By analyzing the history of the Monroe Doctrine, the two elections in which Andrew Jackson was voted a president, the theory of John C. Calhoun, and the Cherokee Nation vs Jackson trail we can arrive at the strengths and shortcomings of the American democracyin the period between 1820 and 1836. After the revolutionary war and the war of 1812 the United States had to enforce their independence and establish themselves as a political entity. The democratic republican party which ran uncontested in the elections of 1824 had split due to a rift which was created between the ideas of nationalism and sectionalism. On one side Andrew Jackson ran with his Jacksonian Democracy platform and Adams who has now been considered and elitist. However, the expansion of democracy came from the states new relaxed voting laws which in Pennsylvania went as far as allowing all adult males, while in other states had a requirement of being a taxpayer like in the case of Tennessee. This is clearly the main factor in the doubling of the voter participation rising from 26.9 to 57.6 percent. At the same time states were abolishing appointment and moving into popular vote for many positions like state officials and judges. In fact, South Carolina was the only state in which appointment prevailed by 1832. These two changes also inspired a reform in the political thinking and electioneering bringing a new type of politician on the pedestal: the politician who has good popular appeal, a powerful voice, and great leadership skills. The politician who can rally the people and excite them. During the next elections in 1832 a third part joined in response to a despotic conspiracy which was theorized against the Masonic fraternal order. • 35. Pros And Cons Of Anarchy Over the course of human events, philosophers have presented their ideologies about what roles a government should have as well as what are the functions of that said government. At many times, these philosophers have clashed in their ideologies however, each philosopher recognizes one possible state of being; anarchy. Anarchy is a stateof disorder in which there is no official form of a systematic governmentrule. Philosophers such as Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Mearsheimer, Ikenberry, and Gilpin all acknowledge and agree that a state of anarchy can exist but they disagree in whether anarchy is good or bad. Anarchy in a state of nature is conflictual, thus it is a problem. Politics in a state of anarchy is either conflictual by nature or can lead to prospects for cooperation. Aristotle argue that anarchy, in a state of nature, is conflictual, and Locke argues that anarchy can lead to cooperation. In an anarchic society there are no laws, limitations, or regulations and as a result there is chaos which lead to arguments and disputes. In a systematic government, there is stability and security; you have someone of a higher status to go to find a solution to your troubles but when you get rid of the hierarchy people lose that sense of security and stability and as a result are forced to provide these securities form themselves. From what Aristotle states Hence it is evident that the state is a creation of nature, and that man is by nature a political animal. And he who by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through the use of rhetorical appeals such as pathos, logos and imagery she successfully explains her claim. Through this novel she gives an insightful explanation of what antigua is like from a person who comes from that area. Kincaid being born in antigua, she gives us a view from her eyes on what antigua is really like while going through post colonial impact. Kincaid incorporates historical background in text to convince her audience that this impact is holding back antigua from the good and enjoyable place it can really be. She develops a connection with the audience when she makes them feel like the tourist that is figuring out what s going on in the background of antigua. This connection serves as pathos as it makes the audience feel the emotion of anger and disappointment for not knowing what mess is really going on in this small island. This demonstration shows how cultures everywhere are affected by postcolonialism and how there is a negative global commonality between tourist and natives. It was very impactful being put in the tourist seat while reading this novel. Milgram wanted to see if there was a connection between the conflict between obedience to authority and personal conscience (McLeod, 2007). Milgram s hypothesis that he based his experiment on was How the German people could permit the extermination of the Jews? (Dan Chalenor, 2012). The first one that Milgram s experiment violated was Principle A: Beneficence and Nonmaleficence which is where psychologists strive to benefit those with whom they work and take care to do no harm (Ethical principles, 2013, p. 3, para. 3). The second principle that was violated was Principle B: Fidelity and Responsibility which is where... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The moderators of the experiment were not respecting the subjects due to the fact that are causing unnecessary stress. Personally, researching this experiment made me extremely uncomfortable just because I do not believe in causing unnecessary harm to someone who does not deserve it. In this case, harm is the unnecessary stress since the accomplice of the experiment was not actually shocked, he just acted like it. I think that the moderators of the experiment, especially Milgram, should have been upfront in the ad placed in the newspaper over what was going to actually be happening to the people who volunteered. The way the readings and the video made it sound was that it was just a surprise over what actually happened to the subjects. It is shocking to me that he thought that this was something that was morally and ethically right. This Stanford Experiment violated a few of the Five General Principles of Ethics. There are various types of economies in the the world, of the various types they can be narrowed down to the two most common which are capitalist and socialist economies. Capitalism is a way of organizing an economy so that the things that are used to make and transport products are owned by individual people and companies rather than by the government (Merriam Webster). In the state lead economy, the government owns the means of production, but the organization is ran by capitalists methods. Capitalism promotes competition in the economy which has positive outcomes. Competition generates higher quality products and more effective techniques in businesses. Competition is the only reason the government plays a role in capitalism, and that role is protection from fraud and force. The only purpose of government would be to protect its citizens from force or fraud (Reisman, George). Socialism is considered the weak; less effective form of economy. By failing to emphasize incentives, socialism is a theory inconsistent with human nature and is therefore doomed to fail (Mark Perry, 1995). It is the type of organization that involves the government owning and controlling the major industries and prosperous companies in the country. The fact that socialism disregards private property rights in establishing incentives for economic development and growth is another reason why socialism fails. Socialism robs citizens of their human rights to private property, but it does grant the right to an education, to work, and free health care and transportation. Unlike capitalism that is based on supply and demand, in a socialist economy, the government regulates the quantity of products produced and distributed. The government also ... • 41. Ethnic Differences Between The United Kingdom And America Throughout this paper I will focus on data from the United Kingdom and America and focus solely on the disadvantages that ethnic minority groups endure which effect their health status. In doing this, I will highlight several explanations put forth by social scientists, such as cultural, socioeconomic and racial approaches whilst incorporating different literature, such as the works of Bartley (2004), Nettleton (2013) and Nazroo (1997). Before exploring the many explanations that social scientists offer to explain the ethnic differences in health status, it is important to acknowledge that gathering data on racial or ethnic minorities is extremely problematic. This is because there are not any universally agreed definitions of ethnic or racial groups and definitions change over time (Aspinall, 2002). Such problems of the lack of conceptual clarification stem from whether researchers presume that raceand ethnicity are a biological or a social characteristic. To overcome this problem, throughout this paper, I will use the term racial or ethnic minority to refer to any group of people who are exposed to unfavourable treatment because of their national origins, shared social histories, or religion as outlined in the works of Bartley (2004: 151). Until recent years there has not been a huge amount of literature exploring the patterns between ethnicity and health status. Family, Friends and Lovers reminded me of situations that I have experienced in the past. I can honestly relate to this episode in so many ways, such as my outlook on family and friends. The first few people that babies ever know are their family. Infants value their mother/caregiver more than anyone. From birth they tend to form a bond with their caregiver, in which is known as attachment. Due to their family members being the first people they interact with they learn how to relate with people at home. Family relationship is practice to what is next; meaning the relationships people gain with their family helps them prepare for future relationship with others. Friendships can be very helpful because no one wants to be lonely. It is quite nice to have someone else to hang and interact with besides family. It is great to have a friend that you can connect with. In the episode, Family, Friends and Lovers Harry Harlow Monkey LoveExperiment was mentioned. In this experiment, he separated infant monkeys from their mothers a few hours after birth, and then arranged for them to be raised by two kinds of surrogate monkey mothers. One reason for this is the walls of the Pantheon reach up to 20ft thick making it impossible for windows. The specific construction of the Pantheon also made it impossible for light to enter at the entrance when the front doors opened. No direct sunlight can enter from the door in the course of the whole year, owing to the northward orientation of the entrance doorway (Hannah). This was unusual for roman temples, as they normally were set to face the south so the sun could illuminate the temples year round. One explanation of the northern orientation is that the project of the building was to some extent inspired by a particular type of sundial, which captured the sunlight within a shadowy interior (Harris). With the Romans giving great significance to the sun and the detailed position and measurements made in building the Pantheon, researchers have made many findings to give reason that the Pantheon was some form of a sun dial or astronomical instrument. At the autumn equinox [September 22n d], the spot of sunlight touches the interior springing of the upper hemisphere. Then at winter solstice [December 22nd] the spot of sunlight moves up to a maximum height in the roof over the entrance.
