Final Reflection
At the beginning of this year I started with the procedures to find three schools
where I had to do the practicum period. I have to say that I was very nervous, in
fact I felt nervous since the moment I knew I had to do the practicum period this
year. It was a big challenge for me because I have to admit that when I started this
journey I thought I would not be able to reach the goal. It sounds sad because I am
a very insecure person and I believe there is a lack of self- confidence on me so I
was really afraid of what was going to happen. This is probably one of the aspects I
have to improve about me.
I visited my town’s Kindergarten, Primary School and Secondary School. The head
teachers of each institution were predisposed to bring me the place and time to do
my practicum period. Even the kindergarten’s director, in which there are not
English lessons, was eager to start. I had to develop a workshop in order to do my
practicum on Kinder, and then in Primary and Secondary school was easier because
I worked with the local teachers of each level. All the people in the different
institutions were great with me and helped me as much as they could.
I can say that I had a great experience in the three periods and the most important
thing for me was that, in general, all the students expressed their affection and
made me feel very comfortable. I developed a beautiful relationship with all of
them and I believe that they all will have a nice memory about me. The most
important moment of the practicum period for me has to do with a little girl in
Kindergarten. The girl suffers from stuttering and she is really shy, she does not
speak a lot and does not show lots of affection for other people, but when we meet
on the streets of my town or somewhere, she always screams ‘señooo’ and says
hello to me really excited. I have to admit this is one of the things I will remember
forever, because I believe I made a difference on her. Although all the kids from
Kindergarten say hello to me and hug me every time they meet me in town, this
girl’s case is special for me.
Although the whole experience was mainly good, I found some difficulties as well.
One of these difficulties was in secondary school when I had to use the book that
the local teacher designed to develop my lesson plan. I found myself on a really
difficult situation because I believe the contents on the book were not connected
well with each other.
On the other hand, one of the things I would like to highlight is the fact that, at the
beginning of each of the periods I was afraid about speaking English in class all the
time because I thought students would not understand or would feel
uncomfortable as this was not the way they usually work with their teacher but,
despite that, they all enjoyed listening to me speaking English and even better,
they could understand. Of course I used lots of gestures and different voice pitch
to make them clear the words they had to pay attention to, but students felt really
confident and liked working this way. This is an aspect I would not change in my
future experiences.
My practicum period was not my first teaching experience. I started in 2015 with
private English lessons at home and I also taught to adults in FinEs, but I had never
worked at school or Kindergarten and I have to admit that both experiences are
very different. Working at school has other responsibilities and you have to adapt
and design your lessons according to the school’s background. For example,
technology nowadays is a great tool for us teachers, but it is difficult to find a
school where you can have a good Internet access or computers, and it happened
to me at secondary school that there was not Wi-Fi connection so I could not do
the activities I would like to. On the other hand, when you work on your own with
private lessons you already know the background, you can prepare the space and
you can work the way you want with your students.
This year was a big challenge for me. As I told before, I was really nervous and
insecure when I started this road. But my feelings were changing as days went by
because the way students of Kinder, Primary and Secondary School reacted to my
teaching style and strategies gave me lots of self- confidence and motivation to
keep working and improving. There were lots of things that helped me grow and
improve the way I teach and of course there are things I would do the same way
and other things that I know I can avoid to do in the future but I have to admit that
the most important thing I learned this year was that If I believe in myself, I will be
able to do whatever I propose. Self- confidence is the most powerful tool we have.
