Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs: One of the things I have to consider when making the children’s book is cost. When drawing the
illustrations, equipment like pencils and specialist pens may be required which I’d have to pay for. Ink and
paper has to be thought about as well, and printing costs so I can get my book in its physical form. If I was
doing a photo shoot for my book, I’d need to hire people to be models, buy any props I needed and get
transport to the location. However, I am doing my children’s book digitally using Photoshop on a computer so I
will not have any production costs.
Available resources: The resources I need for this project are a computer and Photoshop. I will need internet
connection on the computer so I can download fonts, as I may not want to use a font that is readily available
in Photoshop. Photoshop is the program I am using to create my children’s book. All of these resources are
available to me at college.
Quantity: Goldilocks and the Three Bears is very well known children’s story and has had many different
versions of it done before. I would sell this as a special edition book and create a few hundred copies of it. It
would sell well because a lot of people know the story, but I wouldn’t sell it for mass market because there are
competitors that also sell books with the same story, and it is also available to see online, so it’s unpredictable
how many copies I would sell if I produced thousands.
Audience and Target Market: The audience for my book is children aged 5-7, as this is the stage where
children tend to build up their reading skills. It is targeted towards parents who might want to buy the book for
their children. It is aimed at any gender, but it may appeal to girls more than boys because of the female main
character. It is aimed towards middle class families.
Quality Factors: I need to make sure the quality of my book is the best I can make it. One of the ways I can
achieve this is by making sure my images are good quality and are fit for purpose and accurately follow what
is going on in the story. I need to make sure that the language of my script is easy to read for the age of my
audience, and the text font is clear.
Codes of Practice: One code of practice, which can be considered in this context, is the Publishers
Association code of practice. This only applies in agreements where an author licenses the interest in the
copyright of a book to a publisher. It focuses on the relationship between the author and publisher, which is
crucial for successful publishing. This code of practice makes sure there are no causes for misunderstandings
by addressing areas that may lead to conflict. For example, one of the guidelines is that a publisher must not
cancel a contract without good and proper reason, and focuses on time, standard and quality, and also
defamation or illegality. These guidelines are not relevant in my project, and they cover financial and legal
issues that don’t apply to me.
Regulation: If a children’s book fits the definition of a toy, it will have to comply with the new Toy Safety
Directive 2009/48/EC. Children’s books can be very interactive, and have pop up features and different
textures, and these interactive features can classify it as a toy. This means that there are risks and hazards
and pieces of it could come apart, and there is a possibility of it causing harm to a child, so there are
regulations to try and prevent this.
Copyright: Since I am working with a story that someone else has created and isn’t my own, copyright law
could be an issue. However, I am changing the script slightly by shortening it and changing words to make it
easier for my target audience of children aged 5-7 to understand. For my illustrations, I have used images I
found on the internet to use as templates to rotascope with, and haven’t taken someone’s images to include in
my book, so there shouldn’t be copyright issues.
Ethical Issues: Ethical issues are an important thing to consider, especially when creating a book for a young
audience. The story of my book shows the actions of a girl who doesn’t have good morals; she enters
someone else’s house without permission, eats their food, uses their chairs and sleeps in their beds. These
are all bad actions that would require punishment and lesson teaching, which isn’t shown in my work.
However, the three bears end up coming home and catching her in the act, and in the end she runs away and
doesn’t return.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Computer/laptop Yes
These are easy accessible as I have a computer available to
me at college and a laptop to use at home, so I can continue
any work I have left to finish.
Photoshop Yes This is available to me at college and I can use it in lessons.
Storyboard Yes
I have completed my storyboard, and it is on my computer and
also saved on the website I created it on, so I can access it
easily when I need to.
Script Yes
My script is on my computer, and I have also saved everything
on a memory stick which makes it easier for when I need to
continue with work at home.
Flat plans Yes I can look at these on my computer when I need to see them.
Internet Yes I can access the internet at college and home.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
I have previously started to create the background for my first page on Photoshop. I need to add some
finishing touches, such as more leaves for the trees, and then it should be completed.
I will create my main character, Goldilocks, in Photoshop. This will be done by finding a goldilocks
character on the internet, pasting it into my Photoshop document and then rotascoping the image to
make it my own. This will most likely take up the rest of the session as she is the central character so I
need to make sure the quality looks good.
Session 2:
I will put the Goldilocks character I made onto the first background, and add text and then the first page
will be completed. I will make a start on the house for the second page and add the sky and the grass.
I will add the forest trees in the background, and add a path leading up to the house.
I will then create a side view of goldilocks as she walks towards the house.
Session 3:
I will rotascope the shape of a floor and walls to show that the next part takes place inside the house. I
will then rotascope a table with bowls of porridge on it.
I will create the goldilocks character with a spoon in her hand to show she tastes the porridge. I will also
add facial expressions to show her reaction, with matches with her dialogue, which I will add on the page
using the text tool.
Finally, I will add finishing touches to the page, such as a window and a clock in the background.
For the next 2 pages, I will keep everything the same apart from move golidlocks to the 2nd bowl, and
then to the 3rd bowl to show how she is eating from each bowl.
Session 4:
To start the 6th page, I’ll rotascope 3 chairs; a big chair for Papa bear, a medium chair for Mama bear,
and the smallest chair for Baby bear.
I will rotascope a side view of goldilocks sitting on the biggest chair. Then for the 7th page and 8th page i
will move her to the 2nd chair, and the last chair. On the 9th page, I will create something that looks like a
pile of wood in place of the 3rd chair to show that she has broken it. These pages will take me the whole
session to do.
Session 5:
For the 10th page, I will rotascope 3 beds; a big bed, a medium bed, and the smallest bed.
I will create the goldilocks character and show that she is lying down on the biggest bed.
Session 6:
On the 11th page I’ll move her to the 2nd bed, and then on the 12th page she will move to the last bed.
While goldilocks is on Papa bear and Mama bear’s bed, I will create an upset/angry facial expression
for her to show that she isn’t satisfied with those 2 beds. Then when she is on Baby bear’s bed, I will
change it to a happy expression, but also show that she has fallen asleep.
Session 7:
For the 13th page, I will use the scenery from where golidlocks is in the house and tastes the porridge. I
will rotascope Papa bear, Mama bear, and Baby bear stood next to each other looking at their porridge
bowls with a shocked and angry expression. Baby’s porridge bowl will be empty to show golidlocks had
finished it.
When creating the 14th page, I’ll use the same setting as the 9th page, with the 2 chairs and Baby bear’s
broken one. Then I will place the three bears on the side of it.
Session 8:
For the 15th page, the same setting as the 12th page will be used, which shows goldilocks sleeping in
Baby bear’s bed, and I will add the bears to this page for the scene where they realise someone’s been
sleeping in their beds, and goldilocks is discovered.
I will add text to this page, and play around with where it will be placed, as there is quite a lot going on
in this page, so there is limited room for text.
Session 9:
The 16th and final page is where goldilocks is running through the forest away from the bears’ house. I
will rotascope trees and create a similar setting to the first page to show it is the same forest where she
is first seen.
It will take some time to do this as I will need to draw a lot of trees and use the leaves paint brush tool to
make them look identical the first page. This is likely to take up the whole session time.
Session 10:
During the last session, I will rotascope the back view of goldilocks as she is running away back through
the forest.
Once this is done, I will add the last part of text from the script.
Once I’ve completed all the pages, if I have time, i will will go back through each of them to see if
anything needs to be refined or improved.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you f rom
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Headaches/damaging eyesight
Don’t sit too close to the computer/laptop, and use
glasses to see the screen if needed. 10 and 20 minute
breaks will be take after each lesson so no one will be at a
computer for no more than an hour and a half.
Tripping over wires(specifically laptop charger leads)
Make sure all the leads and computer wires are tucked
away safely and not on the classroom floor where people
can trip over them easily.
Spilling drinks on computers/laptops
Make sure all liquids are kept well away from any
electronics to prevent anything being spilt and damaging
them.
Body/back pain
Make sure to hold the correct posture and don’t slouch
whilst using the computers. If you have to see something
on the screen more clearly, it can be zoomed in, or wear
glasses for better vision whilst working.

It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college. Session 1: I have previously started to create the background for my first page on Photoshop. I need to add some finishing touches, such as more leaves for the trees, and then it should be completed. I will create my main character, Goldilocks, in Photoshop. This will be done by finding a goldilocks character on the internet, pasting it into my Photoshop document and then rotascoping the image to make it my own. This will most likely take up the rest of the session as she is the central character so I need to make sure the quality looks good. Session 2: I will put the Goldilocks character I made onto the first background, and add text and then the first page will be completed. I will make a start on the house for the second page and add the sky and the grass.
  • 6. I will add the forest trees in the background, and add a path leading up to the house. I will then create a side view of goldilocks as she walks towards the house. Session 3: I will rotascope the shape of a floor and walls to show that the next part takes place inside the house. I will then rotascope a table with bowls of porridge on it. I will create the goldilocks character with a spoon in her hand to show she tastes the porridge. I will also add facial expressions to show her reaction, with matches with her dialogue, which I will add on the page using the text tool. Finally, I will add finishing touches to the page, such as a window and a clock in the background. For the next 2 pages, I will keep everything the same apart from move golidlocks to the 2nd bowl, and then to the 3rd bowl to show how she is eating from each bowl. Session 4: To start the 6th page, I’ll rotascope 3 chairs; a big chair for Papa bear, a medium chair for Mama bear, and the smallest chair for Baby bear.
  • 7. I will rotascope a side view of goldilocks sitting on the biggest chair. Then for the 7th page and 8th page i will move her to the 2nd chair, and the last chair. On the 9th page, I will create something that looks like a pile of wood in place of the 3rd chair to show that she has broken it. These pages will take me the whole session to do. Session 5: For the 10th page, I will rotascope 3 beds; a big bed, a medium bed, and the smallest bed. I will create the goldilocks character and show that she is lying down on the biggest bed. Session 6: On the 11th page I’ll move her to the 2nd bed, and then on the 12th page she will move to the last bed.
  • 8. While goldilocks is on Papa bear and Mama bear’s bed, I will create an upset/angry facial expression for her to show that she isn’t satisfied with those 2 beds. Then when she is on Baby bear’s bed, I will change it to a happy expression, but also show that she has fallen asleep. Session 7: For the 13th page, I will use the scenery from where golidlocks is in the house and tastes the porridge. I will rotascope Papa bear, Mama bear, and Baby bear stood next to each other looking at their porridge bowls with a shocked and angry expression. Baby’s porridge bowl will be empty to show golidlocks had finished it. When creating the 14th page, I’ll use the same setting as the 9th page, with the 2 chairs and Baby bear’s broken one. Then I will place the three bears on the side of it. Session 8: For the 15th page, the same setting as the 12th page will be used, which shows goldilocks sleeping in Baby bear’s bed, and I will add the bears to this page for the scene where they realise someone’s been sleeping in their beds, and goldilocks is discovered.
  • 9. I will add text to this page, and play around with where it will be placed, as there is quite a lot going on in this page, so there is limited room for text. Session 9: The 16th and final page is where goldilocks is running through the forest away from the bears’ house. I will rotascope trees and create a similar setting to the first page to show it is the same forest where she is first seen. It will take some time to do this as I will need to draw a lot of trees and use the leaves paint brush tool to make them look identical the first page. This is likely to take up the whole session time. Session 10: During the last session, I will rotascope the back view of goldilocks as she is running away back through the forest.
  • 10. Once this is done, I will add the last part of text from the script. Once I’ve completed all the pages, if I have time, i will will go back through each of them to see if anything needs to be refined or improved.
  • 11. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you f rom working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it? Headaches/damaging eyesight Don’t sit too close to the computer/laptop, and use glasses to see the screen if needed. 10 and 20 minute breaks will be take after each lesson so no one will be at a computer for no more than an hour and a half. Tripping over wires(specifically laptop charger leads) Make sure all the leads and computer wires are tucked away safely and not on the classroom floor where people can trip over them easily. Spilling drinks on computers/laptops Make sure all liquids are kept well away from any electronics to prevent anything being spilt and damaging them.
  • 12. Body/back pain Make sure to hold the correct posture and don’t slouch whilst using the computers. If you have to see something on the screen more clearly, it can be zoomed in, or wear glasses for better vision whilst working.
