Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
There will not be any cost in making my book because I have access to a computer at college and at home.
Also, I do not need to hire any models. Take a bus trip to any locations to shoot, hire costumes or studios
etc…
Available resources:
I have availability to computers, of which I am able to access Photoshop, the internet, PowerPoint and all the
other sites I require to make my work.
Quantity:
If my book ends up selling loads and becoming popular when it is finished then I will make 100’s, even 1000’s
of copies depending on it popularity. It is well known children’s book and I think a lot of people will be
interested in reading it, therefore I predict at least 100’s of copies would ne necessary.
Audience and Target Market:
I am aiming my book at children, teenagers and adults, but mainly children because it is a folk tale that first
became famous as a children’s book. Both boys and girls would like my book as it has no content that
deliberately appeals to a specific gender. It is for anybody who likes fantasy books and enjoyed the darker
versions of the original Pied Piper; as there was many different versions of the original story that were made.
My story features the Pied Piper escaping from jail and therefore it has an element of bad and dangerous
behaviour. However, he gets punished for this and I think as long as children see that this behaviour is wrong
then it is okay. Furthermore, the violent part at the end when the Pied Piper is hung is extremely make-believe
and unreal, so I don’t feel that the violence is bad enough (graphic or strong) to be unsuitable for children.
Quality Factors:
I will make my book a quality piece of work and production by sticking to my plan because any changes this
late on could confuse me or might not suit the story. I will compare the pages as I make them, for example,
when I am on the third page I will look back at the first two and make sure I am sticking to the same theme
and similar content because it is vital in making a book that it maintains its preciseness from start to finish. I
will make sure I show up to class on time and do not talk to people or become distracted as this will effect the
quality of my work, as a result of me not putting in 100% effect as a result of loosing time and being disturbed.
Codes of Practice:
My book must be made before the deadline because in the real world, if it isn’t I will loose some of the money
the publisher said they would pay me. If the book is significantly late then the publisher might not even be
willing to pay anything for it.
My work must be protected to be free from copyright fraud or manipulation.
In the working world, a publisher will take me through the rights and rules I need to know in order to be an
author and keep my informed on any changes or progress. The publisher is also in charge of the money the
book makes and how much is mine as the author, as well as many other things. The codes of Practise are all
about the publisher. Additionally, the publisher is like an employer to an author.
Regulation:
Copyright:
Anything I copy and use in my work, for example fonts from the website DaFont, are fine to use for college
work but if I intend to use that work for money purposes then it is illegal copyright and I could be sued. It is
important to check work after it has been finished before giving it to a publisher just to be sure no copyright
was used.
Ethical Issues:
My book will be suitable for people regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation etc… This is
because I did not include anything that could be harmful, offensive or discriminating in the content I included. I
am going to make the book for children mainly and therefore I will make it suitable for this age group.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
In session 1 I aim to have my first book page complete with my original intentions of the characters and
script. This includes all text as well.
I aim to have a finished Photoshop pre-production document of my main character and a suitable and
appealing background that relates to the story.
I aim to have a nice looking and simple first background for my book, which will work as the background
for my first few slides.
Session 2:
In session 2 I aim to have a second page complete and a page that accurately leads on from the first
page.
I aim to have the text on this page complete.
I am to have a suitable and detailed pipe made for the Pied Piper to use. I will use Photoshop to do this.
Session 3:
In session 3 I aim to have page 3 complete and a background to use for the settings because at this
part of the story the settings change from a jail cell to a large rock at the side of a river, where the piper
stands and plays a tune on his pipe.
At this point I want people who read the book to be engaged with the story and excited about what is to
happen next.
I aim to have changed the pipers position so as he looks like he is standing up and feeling down.
Session 4:
In this session I want to have made the next character to come into my book, which is the boy.
I am to show that a friendship is starting between the boy and the piper.
I aim to have the text for this page done.
Session 5:
Session 5 I will aim to have a 5th page underway and complete my forth page with the boy and the piper
in it.
I aim to finish page 5 because I will already have the background for it and the characters.
I aim to add the text into the slide and look back through my book to make sure all my slides are working
well together. Also, I want to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes.
Session 6:
In session 6 I aim to have made a third background which I will make a jpeg of so as I can use it for my
next couple of slides and zoom in because this will look more impressive if I can change the setting
appeal.
I want to use the quick selection tool to add some quick additionally detail to the slide in necessary. For
example, the bed. I will use this tool because it would be to hard to use the shape tool and this tool will
enable me to quickly go around the shapes with a lot of uneven parts like the shadow of the bed.
Session 7:
In this session I aim to have a page 7 complete and possible 8 complete with a darker setting of the
room through the use of changing the colour overlay on each layer. This will give the feel of it being
night-time.
I aim to have the boy in a different position from skipping and holding his bag. I want him to just be
stood up as normal.
Session 8:
I aim to have made a children’s book version of the Mayor of Hamelin at this point by finding the right
image and adapting it.
I aim to have moved the positioning of the boys hands upwards because he needs to be holding the
pipe he stole in slide 8.
I aim to have made the pipe a separate jpeg so as it will be easier to place onto the slide. Because at
this point the pipe have off only be seen with the piper holding it.
Session 9:
Session 9 I hope to have completed at least 8 slides and made a start on the final one.
I will take another look back at my book to make sure the colours, texts and detail is all how I want it to
be.
I also want to have made a start at least on the final slides background with a full insight into how I want
it to look.
Session 10:
I hope to have all slides complete.
Look through my work to see if there is anything that I could make better.
Get my teacher to look a it and see what he thinks I could improve.
Work swiftly at any improvements.
Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Water at tables because it could spill and leak onto the
computer causing damage or electrical sparks which
could harm us.
Do not bring water or any worse drinks into class and
have the teacher explain the damages it could cause.
Make sure all materials used, such as the scanner, any
camera’s, scissors etc…are properly stored, handled,
used and transported.
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
Ensure you take care when using, handling, storing or
transporting anything.
People tripping over stuff on the floor.
Do not leave computer or laptop wires on the floor or any
bags or other stuff, which people could potentially trip
over.
Harming your eyes by staring at the computer screen to
long.
This is an act set out by HSE called Working with Display
Screen Equipment (DSE) Take 5 or 10 minute breaks every hour to rest your eyes.

  • 1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents. Considerations: There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that context rather than just as a college project. Costs: There will not be any cost in making my book because I have access to a computer at college and at home. Also, I do not need to hire any models. Take a bus trip to any locations to shoot, hire costumes or studios etc… Available resources: I have availability to computers, of which I am able to access Photoshop, the internet, PowerPoint and all the other sites I require to make my work.
  • 2. Quantity: If my book ends up selling loads and becoming popular when it is finished then I will make 100’s, even 1000’s of copies depending on it popularity. It is well known children’s book and I think a lot of people will be interested in reading it, therefore I predict at least 100’s of copies would ne necessary. Audience and Target Market: I am aiming my book at children, teenagers and adults, but mainly children because it is a folk tale that first became famous as a children’s book. Both boys and girls would like my book as it has no content that deliberately appeals to a specific gender. It is for anybody who likes fantasy books and enjoyed the darker versions of the original Pied Piper; as there was many different versions of the original story that were made. My story features the Pied Piper escaping from jail and therefore it has an element of bad and dangerous behaviour. However, he gets punished for this and I think as long as children see that this behaviour is wrong then it is okay. Furthermore, the violent part at the end when the Pied Piper is hung is extremely make-believe and unreal, so I don’t feel that the violence is bad enough (graphic or strong) to be unsuitable for children. Quality Factors: I will make my book a quality piece of work and production by sticking to my plan because any changes this late on could confuse me or might not suit the story. I will compare the pages as I make them, for example, when I am on the third page I will look back at the first two and make sure I am sticking to the same theme and similar content because it is vital in making a book that it maintains its preciseness from start to finish. I will make sure I show up to class on time and do not talk to people or become distracted as this will effect the quality of my work, as a result of me not putting in 100% effect as a result of loosing time and being disturbed. Codes of Practice: My book must be made before the deadline because in the real world, if it isn’t I will loose some of the money the publisher said they would pay me. If the book is significantly late then the publisher might not even be willing to pay anything for it. My work must be protected to be free from copyright fraud or manipulation. In the working world, a publisher will take me through the rights and rules I need to know in order to be an author and keep my informed on any changes or progress. The publisher is also in charge of the money the book makes and how much is mine as the author, as well as many other things. The codes of Practise are all about the publisher. Additionally, the publisher is like an employer to an author.

Regulation: Copyright: Anything I copy and use in my work, for example fonts from the website DaFont, are fine to use for college work but if I intend to use that work for money purposes then it is illegal copyright and I could be sued. It is important to check work after it has been finished before giving it to a publisher just to be sure no copyright was used. Ethical Issues: My book will be suitable for people regardless of their race, gender, religion, sexual orientation etc… This is because I did not include anything that could be harmful, offensive or discriminating in the content I included. I am going to make the book for children mainly and therefore I will make it suitable for this age group.
  • 4. Resources: A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project. If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production. Resource: Do you have it? What do you need to do to get it? Final script that I mad in the planning process. Yes I need to open up my development pro-forma and find the slide it is on, which will be easy. My proposal Yes I need to open up the word document that it is on. The internet to help out with words I might want to use if they have the right definition and meaning. Yes Go onto my computer or the college one and open up Safari. The original version of the Pied Piper to help me if I need help knowing what the backgrounds of places or characters look like. No Go to the library and issue out the book or order it from an only source such as Amazon. Google to get the images I want to create my characters. Yes Go on the computer
  • 5. Production Schedule: Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are. Each session is a half day of college. Session 1: In session 1 I aim to have my first book page complete with my original intentions of the characters and script. This includes all text as well. I aim to have a finished Photoshop pre-production document of my main character and a suitable and appealing background that relates to the story. I aim to have a nice looking and simple first background for my book, which will work as the background for my first few slides. Session 2: In session 2 I aim to have a second page complete and a page that accurately leads on from the first page.
  • 6. I aim to have the text on this page complete. I am to have a suitable and detailed pipe made for the Pied Piper to use. I will use Photoshop to do this. Session 3: In session 3 I aim to have page 3 complete and a background to use for the settings because at this part of the story the settings change from a jail cell to a large rock at the side of a river, where the piper stands and plays a tune on his pipe. At this point I want people who read the book to be engaged with the story and excited about what is to happen next. I aim to have changed the pipers position so as he looks like he is standing up and feeling down. Session 4: In this session I want to have made the next character to come into my book, which is the boy.
  • 7. I am to show that a friendship is starting between the boy and the piper. I aim to have the text for this page done. Session 5: Session 5 I will aim to have a 5th page underway and complete my forth page with the boy and the piper in it. I aim to finish page 5 because I will already have the background for it and the characters. I aim to add the text into the slide and look back through my book to make sure all my slides are working well together. Also, I want to make sure that there are no spelling mistakes. Session 6: In session 6 I aim to have made a third background which I will make a jpeg of so as I can use it for my next couple of slides and zoom in because this will look more impressive if I can change the setting appeal.
  • 8. I want to use the quick selection tool to add some quick additionally detail to the slide in necessary. For example, the bed. I will use this tool because it would be to hard to use the shape tool and this tool will enable me to quickly go around the shapes with a lot of uneven parts like the shadow of the bed. Session 7: In this session I aim to have a page 7 complete and possible 8 complete with a darker setting of the room through the use of changing the colour overlay on each layer. This will give the feel of it being night-time. I aim to have the boy in a different position from skipping and holding his bag. I want him to just be stood up as normal. Session 8: I aim to have made a children’s book version of the Mayor of Hamelin at this point by finding the right image and adapting it.
  • 9. I aim to have moved the positioning of the boys hands upwards because he needs to be holding the pipe he stole in slide 8. I aim to have made the pipe a separate jpeg so as it will be easier to place onto the slide. Because at this point the pipe have off only be seen with the piper holding it. Session 9: Session 9 I hope to have completed at least 8 slides and made a start on the final one. I will take another look back at my book to make sure the colours, texts and detail is all how I want it to be. I also want to have made a start at least on the final slides background with a full insight into how I want it to look. Session 10: I hope to have all slides complete.
  • 10. Look through my work to see if there is anything that I could make better. Get my teacher to look a it and see what he thinks I could improve. Work swiftly at any improvements.
  • 11. Health and safety: Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life. Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from happening. Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it? Water at tables because it could spill and leak onto the computer causing damage or electrical sparks which could harm us. Do not bring water or any worse drinks into class and have the teacher explain the damages it could cause. Make sure all materials used, such as the scanner, any camera’s, scissors etc…are properly stored, handled, used and transported. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 Ensure you take care when using, handling, storing or transporting anything. People tripping over stuff on the floor. Do not leave computer or laptop wires on the floor or any bags or other stuff, which people could potentially trip over.
  • 12. Harming your eyes by staring at the computer screen to long. This is an act set out by HSE called Working with Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Take 5 or 10 minute breaks every hour to rest your eyes.
