The document provides a planning booklet for a digital graphic narrative project. It includes sections for considerations, costs, available resources, quantity, audience, quality factors, codes of practice, regulation, copyright, ethical issues, and a production schedule.
The production schedule outlines 9 sessions of work. Each session includes background creation, character development, and special effects for different pages of the graphic narrative.
The health and safety section identifies potential risks like loose wires, free chairs, eye strain, and paper cuts. It explains how to prevent issues by securing wires, stowing chairs, taking breaks, and handling materials carefully.
1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
My booklet wont cost anything because I will be using resources from the internet.
Available resources:
I will have a Mac available , Google Images, Graphics Tablet, Photoshop and the Internet.
2. Quantity:
I will be creating about 100 books due to the fact my children’s story is quite different to the other fairy tales so
it would be risky to do more than this amount in case my book doesn’t go well.
Audience and Target Market:
I will be aiming my book at older kids around the age of 6 -8 years old. I want to base the book around the
ABC1 demographic due to the fact they will have a higher income.
Quality Factors:
Distractions form other people or I could fall ill and not be in for college, which could effect production. Stress
could effect the quality of my work or I could become aggravated or annoyed at creating the same image I
could get sick of doing the actual production its self making it look worse.
Codes of Practice:
I will make sure that my book follows the code of practice for example the publishers association code this is
when the publishers will get in contact with the author and give them a deadline for when the book is due if the
book is submitted late then the author would not get paid, If the author doesn’t get finished in time or feel like
they will meet the deadline then they can contact the publishers and submit the first chapter if the publishers
like it then they can stretch the deadline as they would like to see the rest of the book.
3. Regulation:
My book will not follow the regulation code of the toy safety directive 2009/48/EC regulation as the book does
not come with a toy any toy. My book dose not contain any obscure content that will deprave or corrupt
anyone so it will not have to follow the obscene publications act.
Copyright:
My book will not face any copyright issues as I have created the characters and visual imagery different to the
story I based mine product on. I used a similar art style to the one I based my product on but not the same, I
have changed the way it looks around enough not be claimed as copyright. I have followed the same storyline
in a similar way I have change the story but it is still noticeable by the original product I used for my idea. I
would have to contact the original producers to see if they would allow the story I created to be published as I
have based my story off of theirs and it follows that plot in some ways.
Ethical Issues:
My book will not contain any ethical issues as the characters in my book are not of a certain race, religion or
country my book contains a vampire and a talking dog as two of its character which are no existent so nobody
will feel offended by them.
4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
Mac Yes College
USB Stick Yes Myself
Photoshop Yes Mac
Internet Yes College Wifi
5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Gathered images I needed to rotoscope
Created the background for my first page added clouds, and the environment like the ocean, peer and
basket ball hoop
Created my characters for my first page using the shape tool
Finished little effects like the shadow and clipping mask tool to give the peer a realistic wood effect
Session 2:
Began the creation of my second page by angling the peer in a direction that looked as if it was heading
straight on
6. Added in the background like the template of the ruined city and the clouds, ocean and basket ball hoop
Created the characters from a different angle to fit the angle of the peer
Used the clipping mask tool to make the wood effect fit in with the angle of the peer
Session 3:
Began creating my second page by making the background look like it was set in a room, I also added
the bed and other items to make it look as if it was a bedroom
Created the character again but instead I had to make them look younger than they were in the
previous pages as the third page is a flash back
Created the sneeze and added a colour overlay and stroke to make the word fit in with the image to
make it seem as if one of the characters was sneezing
I added the affect on the pitcher in the background of the dots using a brush tool affect
Session 4:
Began creating my fourth page by adding the background of the environment
7. Worked on making the hanging cupboard on the wall giving it the 3d effect and making it look as if the
door had been opened
Added in the image of the pigeon and roterscoped it adding the shade on the wings and placing it in the
position to make it look like it was emerging from the cupboard
Created the character and put him in the position of been scared changing the facial expression to
shocked/terrified
Session 5:
Made the background again to like the sky road and road markings
Placed the image of a van and roterscoped it placed a shape and added a gradient tool and placed it at
an angle to give it the look of it fading into the dark
Created the soup can and placed it on the side of the van making it seem as if it was a soup van
Created my character in the position as if he was looking through the van searching for soup
Session 6:
Created the background like the window and the template of the city to make it seem as if they were
inside a building and the counter in the shop
8. Created the soup can and roterscoped a can opener and placed them next to each other
Used the shape tool to create the monster in the shop and gave him an angry emotion
Created the character giving him a scared look to make him seem like he is frightened of the monster
Session 7:
Loaded up the psd of my third page and resized the bed to make it seem like it was zoomed in
Change the emotion of the character from sneezing to happy
Created the character in the position of him feeding soup to the girl
Roterscoped a wooden spoon and added a liquid look to make it seem as if their was soup in the spoon
Session 8:
Began to create my final page containing illustrations re opened the first page
9. Changed the characters into the positions I wanted them to be in like sitting down and laid back as if
they were relaxed
Changed the emotion on the characters faces like on the vampire I made it look as if she was talking
due to the fact she was telling the story
Altered the final touches like the shadow from vampire for example I stretched it out to fit the vampires
position and moved the clouds/ added more in to make it seemed like they had shifted
Session 9:
Created pages to add text on
Coloured the backgrounds to the same colour as the colours on the illustrations page they went with
Added in effects like snot on the corner of the page with text to make it bond with the illustration as if the
text was part of the image itself
Saved all the files that were psd to JPEGS so I could place them in my PowerPoint
Session 10:
Got the teacher to check my work see if I could alter any of the images to help make them look better
10. Asked the teacher to look at my grammar to see if there were any mistakes fixed and altered the text
and made it correct
Re saved all the psd files over the one that had mistakes
Placed all the final book pages onto my development pro forma
11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Loose wires from may cause a trip hazard I will make sure that all tucked wires a out of the way
Free chairs I will make sure that all the chair are tucked in the tables
Drinks or food
I won’t bring any food or drink into lesson time only when
I am out of lesson
12. Eye strain
Take regular brakes which last around 5 minuets this way
it gives your eyes the opportunity to relax
Paper cuts
Handle the books with care or use digital research as
often as possible
