This document provides planning details for a digital graphic narrative project. It includes considerations for costs, available resources, quantity of copies, audience, quality factors, codes of practice, regulations, copyright, ethical issues, and a production schedule. Health and safety risks like tripping hazards, muscle pains, eyestrain, and spills are also addressed, along with ways to prevent issues from arising. The production schedule outlines the tasks to be completed in each half-day college session, such as creating backgrounds, characters, and adding text.

1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
For me to produce my book it will costs me no expense as college provide me with all the
equipmentthat I need to create my book. This includes computer,laptops, printers, scanners
and software such as Photoshop.
Available resources:
The resources that are available are MacBook’s, Laptops,Cameras, software e.g. Photoshop,
internet, paper, pens, scanners, printers and books.All of these resources are free for me to
use from college.I can use any of these to help create my book.

2. Quantity:
For my book I would not publish many copies of it as I would want it to be special edition were
the books are limited as I believe would make the book more specialas only a certain amount
of people can buy it and be able to read it. It would also make it more desirable as there are
not many copies and you wouldn’t be able to buy it from anywhere. I would create 500 copies
of the book.
Audience and Target Market:
The audience of my book would be for both genders as it is not aimed at any specific gender
so both boy and girl would be able to enjoy it. The book is based on a reading age of 5-8. This
has changed from my original planning as I have wrote a script for it I find it would be difficult
for 3-4 years old to read. The book it stilled aimed at working class,as it is quite basic and
would be sold at a fairly cheap price so they would be able to buy it comfortable.
Quality Factors:
The things that make me work well are planning my work before hand so I can have a step to
step guide of what I need to do, this helps me focus of which parts need doing and keeps me
in order. Another thing is the software with the best up to date software given to my college I
am able to produce the best work possible. Things that can disrupt my work are storage and
memory sticks. Forgetting or losing my memorystick can put me back as I have not go my
work so storing it in lots of differentplaces is a good thing in case you lose your work you can
still carry on without losing any time.
Codes of Practice:
There are set of rules of how the publisher should interact with the author.
The publisher should not cancel a contract without a good reason.
Time- If the author fails to produce a complete scriptby the deadline the publisher has set the
published can be entitled to a refund of the advance already paid on account.
Quality- If the author presents a really good quality piece of practice work to show the
publisher how his book will turns out then does not make the rest of the bookthe same quality

3. and produce not so good piece the publisher can decide not to publish the book.
Illegality-The publisher does not have to produce the book if they believe it is defamatory or
illegal. This can involve racism, discrimination and sexism.
Regulation:
Anything that is a toy but is also a book must fall under the Toy Safety Directive. This is to
ensure the toy is safe for example for pop up books making sure there are no sharp edge or
part that kids, babies can choke on.
Copyright:
Make sure my book is not copyrighted.Ensure that the fonts that I use are aloud for
commercialuse as fonts can be free to download for personal use but not commercialuse and
this can make your book copyrighted.Also when creating characters for your book to make
sure they are you own designs and not using unknown cartoon animals off line that other
people have made or well known ones form movies as this can also lead to your book being
copyrighted.
Ethical Issues:
In your book cultural sensitivity could apply to your work. This means making cultural
differencewithout assigning them a value or positive/negative look. Depending on your
audience and story you can be limited to what you can use.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

to be able to access it.

Be a student at york college and they are provided for you for
free but if you want to work outside of college to will have to buy
your own.

Scanner are accessible with a student id card you scan it
thought to be able to use it.
Internet Yes
To use the internet you need to login with your student
username and password.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will

5. also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1: Monday
I would start by creating the background for my first page (the kitchen) I will use the
shape tool to be able to create the background I want.
Then I would start to add colour and texture to the kitchen to make it look more realistic.
To do this I will use the clipping mask tool.
After the basic of the background in created I would start working on the little detail that
goes into the kitchen for example the window with the background and the pans. I will use
the shape tool and clicking mask for this.
To complete my background I need to add the floor I will do this with the shape tool as
the floor is checker so I will use squares. And then add colour to each square.
Session 2: Monday
After completing my background I can start working on the character. First I will use roto
scoping to create my penguin by using the polygon tool.
After creating the outline of my penguin I can add texture to make it look more realistic.
I will add my finished character into the background and place it in the positionthat looks
best.
Finally I will add text to my 1st
page by choosing which font I want and colour and placing
it at the top left side on the page.
Session 3: Tuesday

6. Start off Tuesday by creating my second page. I will do this by starting on the
background using the shape tool to create hills and the sea. Then add colour and texture
to them with the clipping mask tool.
Then I will start to create the igloo by rotoscoping a real image of a igloo of the internet.
After my background is finished start creating another characters mummy penguin and
baby penguins. Using rotoscoping but I will not add texture, as I want them to look as
cartoon as possible.
Finally finished the page by adding the text “lets go for swim so our fish cools down.” In a
speechbubble above daddy penguin.
Session 4: Thursday
Start of Thursday by adding the same background from page 2 but add sun texture (by
using the clipping mask tool) to it to page 3 as we are still on the same background
scene.
Start to create another character, the women. I will do this using the rotoscope technique
by outlining real life women from the internet and make a cartoon version of her.
Colour her in by double clicking the empty area of the layer and clicking on it and
choosing colour overlay the using the tool clock the pat of the real life women o get the
most accurate colour to her.
Session 5:
Use the same background from page 1 and the explorerenters the house. But start to
create a table using shapes and also create bowls for this page.

7. Start to create the food that the explorer finds,the fish by using the rotoscope technique.
Then place the fish over the bowls I would of earlier created.
Use the women from the previous page but change her hand and face actions to suit the
scene.I will do this by moving her arm in the positionof the bowls and making her face
suit the experience she is having so a smile would be added as she is enjoying the
porridge.
Session 6:
I will start to create a new background in a living room. I will do this by using shapes but
also rotoscoping as the chairs will be tricky to make my self.
I will recreate the women as I will have to create her sat down for this I will rotoscope a
personsat down off the internet but do her clothing and face my self-using shapes and
the warp tool.
I will then add colour to the women and the background.
Finally adding the text to finish it off that I will place at the bottom of the page.
Session 7:
Create a new background for the bedroom using shapes and warp tool to make sure
they are the perfectshape I want. Add in texture to the background using the clipping
mask tool.
Then I will create 3 separate beds 3 differentsizes using the rotoscope tool.
Create the women sat not wearing a coat as she will be in one of the beds I will also use
the rotoscoping toolfor this.
Session 8:

8. Use the same background from page 1 as the page will be set in the kitchen.
Recreate the bowls as they will have changed in the story I will do this with the rubber
tool to create a eaten look.
I will change the penguin face expressionto fit the scene so I will make him look shocked
as he finds he’s food to be eaten.
Session 9:
Use the bedroom background from page 6 as page 9 will be set in the bedroom but the women will not
be lying in the bed.
Re create the women face so she looks scared of the penguins that come into the room.
Use the penguins from previous pages but change daddy penguins face to anger as he will be annoyed
at the girl. And add text to show the penguin is angry and to show the moral of the story.
Session 10:
In the final page I will create a new background that shows the outside using the shape tool and adding
texture to shows what each object is and make it look more realistic.
Also create the women again to make her look like she is running I will do this by making her legs more
far away and in a diagonal place to make it look like she is running also change her face to make her
look sorry/scared.
Finally add text using the text tool to shows she is sorry about breaking a entry and that’s the end of the
book.

9. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

10. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Tripping hazard- chairs & bags.
Make sure you chairs are tucked in and your bags are out
under the desk and not in the way of people walking so
they do not trip.
Muscle pains.
The chairs are adjustable so you can place it so your
back is comfy so it does not cause back pain.
Eyestrain.
The computers screen are movable so you can push
them back and tilt the screen this can help with eye strain
as you are not as close.
Drinks can cause electrical issues.
Water is only allowed in the computer rooms and has to
be ceiled container so it does not spill onto anything as
this can cause the computer to break or electricate you.
