This document provides a planning booklet for a digital graphic narrative project. It includes considerations for costs, available resources, quantity, audience, quality factors, codes of practice, regulations, copyright, ethical issues, and a production schedule. The production schedule outlines 10 sessions to complete the project, with tasks for each session like planning pages, creating artwork in Photoshop, and improving work based on feedback. Health and safety risks of computer work like eye strain and trip hazards are also addressed, with precautions like taking breaks and keeping work areas uncluttered.

1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs: The main costs I would have to worry about when creating my book is printing costs. On average I
found that a ten page long book like mine would cost £2 to print. However for my task I will not need to print
my work and I will be creating all of my work digitally which means there will be no costs.
Available resources: I have been set with the exact resources I need to create a professional looking
children’s book. I have suitable facilities such as MACs and computers, on these I have all sorts of programs
at my own use such as all the Adobe software like Photoshop and Illustrator. I also of course have the internet
that I can use to research and help me discover more information about creating a book and what people look
for in a children’s book.

2. Quantity: I am aiming to create a children’s book that’s sold in mass production, so I will be aiming to produce
copies in the 1,000s. This is because my book won’t be a special edition it will be only be sold as a regular
book so I will be producing a large amount of them in a large mass and shipped out all in one to be
purchased.
Audience and Target Market: The audience I am aiming to target will be that of a young generation,
preferably around the ages of 4-6 year olds, this is because the story I’m creating is a children’s book that
appeals to a younger age then other books. The book itself features a young girl as its main character
meaning that my book will possibly appeal to young girls more then boys however my intentions are to create
a book that appeals to both genders, I think this is possible as in my book it features space travel and
adventure which means my book will also appeal to any kids that are interested in the topic of space.
Quality Factors: For the quality factor to ensure my work is done to the best of my ability and the end product
is made to a high quality, there are a few things I will need to ensure, firstly making sure that I am in on all my
lessons, making sure I don’t miss out on any productive time or waste any. Ensuring that I work to the best of
my ability to produce work I am proud of, this can be done by being fully focused in class time and if need be
making sure work gets done in my own time to meet deadlines and ensure I stay on top of my work.
Codes of Practice: codes of practice are a set of guidelines put in place for publishers to state to the authors,
they state the things you can do and things you cant, it is important to ensure you do not make your self
become liable when creating a story like I am, this can come be done by producing information on a person
that is untrue.

3. Regulation:
When creating a children’s book there can be issues when publishing, for instance if my book falls under the
definition of a toy then I will make sure my book is complaint with the new Toy Safety Directive, this means
checks will be put in place to ensure it is safe to sell to children. My book does not fall under this category so I
don’t need to worry. The Obscene publications act of 1959 also can become an issue when producing a book,
however this only becomes an issue when the content in your book features graphic content or adult only
suited content, however mine wont feature any content like this as it only contains illustrations and text
suitable for a younger audience.
Copyright: When creating a children’s book like I am, where you are taking an existing story and adapting it
to be your own it is important to take copyright laws into consideration as they may result in you having pay
out a lot of money to the person who originally created the story. I have done this, I have researched the
copyrights to the story I am adapting ‘The well at the world’s end’, thankfully I found that there is no copyright
to the story meaning I am free to use it as my own and adapt it how I please without having to pay any
copyrights to the originally creator William Morris as he made the story in the 1800’s before copyright laws
were in place.
Ethical Issues: I do not have to worry about any ethical issues in my story, as it does not feature any, my
book is suitable for young children to read without any offensive language, unsuitable content or irresponsible
text.

4. Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

5. Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
Start on creating the first page of children’s book:
Plan out any ideas I have for the first page,
Decide what the first will look like,
Go on to Photoshop and begin creating my first page and aim to finish at the end of the session
Finish off creating my test pages as I missed a lesson the week before
Begin with creating the background for the first page, start with background for sky and mountain scape,
then start on implementing the house and space ship.
Once the first page is ready begin with character creation for the 2nd page. Start with main character
then start on creation of evil step mother.
Session 2:
Start on creating my second page:
Plan out initial ideas for the look of the 2nd page,
Decide on final idea for 2nd page

6. Begin work on 2nd page and aim to finish before end of session
Begin by making the floor to the inside of the house, working on to the walls then windows and door.
Once interior is done start on making the furniture and props inside the house e.g. flowers, paintings,
tables and chairs.
Once the scene has been made begin to add in the characters and position them where looks best,
once done add in the text.
Session 3:
Start creation of 3rd page:
Begin by planning out the look of the page and decide what I will be creating,
Create 3rd page and finish before session ends.
The page takes place in a different scene so will need to create a new page entirely, start by creating the
side page in the corner presenting main character searching for the well. Start by making the
background e.g. stars and asteroids. Then start on adding in the space ship, which the main character is
flying.
Once corner page has been made start on creating page 3 itself. Begin by creating the location, firstly
the moon which the well is on, add details to moon e.g. moon craters and crevices. Then I will start on
creating the backdrop of the page, similar to the other page e.g. stars and asteroids. Add in the well and
then finally Sammy trying to get space gunk with the sieve.
Start on 4th page:
Plan what the page is going to look like,
If I have time start on creation of 4th page
Session 4:
For page 4 a new character will be introduced so I will need to firstly create the three eyed space frog.
Once character created I can use the same page as before as it is in the same location. Once ive added
the frog to the page I then have to change the expression on main characters face to present her crying.

7. If I have time before the session ends I will start on the 5th page of my book, beginning with page
planning which will involve idea generation for the look of the 5th page, once this is done I will start on
creating the page in Photoshop.
Page 5 is also set in the same location so do not need to make new page. Will need to create corner
image presenting the frog giving Sammy some clay and moss, so create this before starting on page 5.
Once corner image made, all I will need to do for page 5 is create a new expression on the frog and
Sammy’s face, presenting her happy as she blocks off the sieve from leaking.
Session 5:
Finish off page 5 design and creation; once this is done I will start on the 6th page of my book.
Start page 6 planning for the look I want, once I’ve decided what page 6 will look like I will start on
designing it in Photoshop. Finish page 6 before end of session.
Page six will take place back at the house so will not need to make a new page, will need to make
second image to put in the corner showing the frog in the door step after the step mother opens door.
Page 6 itself will consist of Sammy showing evil stepmother the sieve full of space gunk, will, need to
change expression on both Sammy’s face and also her stepmothers. Once page is made and characters
in correct place add correct text for the page.
Session 6:

8. Start page 7 planning for the look I want, how I’m going to present my characters. Once I’ve decided
what page 7 will look like I will start on designing it in Photoshop.
Page 7 takes place in the same scene so will not need to spend time making a new location so I will use
the same on again, changing the characters expressions e.g. Sammy looking sad, the step mother
grinning evilly and also adding the space frog to the scene. I will also add in speech bubbles along with
the text showing Sammy speaking to her stepmother.
Session 7:
Begin on planning for page 8; plan the look, feel and design of the page, once decided begin creation
on Photoshop.
Page 8 again takes place in the same scene so there’s no need to create new page, instead I will use
same one again, perhaps changing the placement of characters in the scene. I will need to create a
second page to be placed in the corner, the second page will involve Sammy placing the frog in her bed
to go to sleep.
Session 8:
Page 9 will take place in a different scene so will need to plan out the new page design.
Start on page 9 creation, the page will be set inside Sammy’s bed room, start by placing down a floor
and walls, including window and other furniture within the room e.g. beds. There will be a second image
again the corner presenting the frog sat upon her pillow while she is asleep, along with a speech bubble
saying “kiss me, kiss me as quick as you can, remember the promise you made me’. Once second page
is made begin to make new character of the prince.
Once prince character has been made add him into the scene, changes will need to be made to
Sammy’s expression.

9. Session 9:
Page 9 will feature a location I have already made in the shape task process, the scene will feature a
sun set that both the prince and Sammy are walking towards, surrounded by a line of trees on either
side of the path and her space ship at the end. Presenting Sammy and the prince leaving to live happily
ever after.
Will to design new versions of characters, showing them with backs turned walking away holding hands.
Session 10:
Spend time improving any outstanding work, also make alterations where needed to pages after given
feedback.

10. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Long excessive periods of time spent working on a
computer can cause harm to your eyes, blood flow and
posture.
To prevent this I must only spend an hour working on a
computer maximum until I should have a break.
There can be health risks with people leaving chairs and
bags lying around the class, as these can become trip
hazards.
To prevent this I must ensure that I tuck chairs under
tables once I’ve finished with them and make sure I put
my bag under my desk once I sit down.
Computer cables and electrical wires can become a
health risk when left untidy, wires flowing across the class
freely can become a trip hazard and also a fire hazard.
To prevent this from being a danger wires and cables are
tucked neatly out of the way and any power cords running
across the class will be covered to prevent them
becoming a tripping hazard.

11. Open bottles and spillages can become health risks as I
am constantly working around electrical devices, liquids
can come into contact with them which could cause a fire
or damage the equipment.
To prevent this I must follow the class rules by only
bringing water as a drink to my lessons and ensuring the
lid is kept on while I’m not drinking from it.
