The Importance Of Modern Human Progress
Firstly we have to define modern human progress, which is defined as the theory that advances in
technology, science, and social organization inevitably produce an improvement in the human
condition. 1 This means that people become happier in terms of quality of life, economic development
and lack of crime.
It is the culmination of modern technology and freeing yourself from the shackles of society s
previous social preconceptions.
With that said the Catholic church harbours some questionable ethical beliefs; contraception, divorce,
end of life care and their attitude to abortion.
They believe that life begins at conception so undergoing an abortion is a grave moral sin. They argue
that a zygote is not a potential person but a person with potential.
The Catholic church is the world s largest religious group united under one leader (the Pope) so
therefore it has tremendous influence over world politics. This means that when the pope says I
declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave
moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being 2 a lot of people believe
his orders and deny innocent women their right to choose.3
Mother Teresa was also a staunch opponent of abortion saying that If a mother can kill her own child,
what is left but for us to kill each other. 4 She has a tremendous amount of leverage in this matter.
It can be argued that abortion is good for society as a whole as Steven Levitt found a strong link
between legalised abortion and the fall in crime rates in the late 1990s. This is because abortion was
legalised in 1973 in the USA and crime rates fell sharply 20 years later. This is down to the fact that
children more likely to cause trouble (from teenage, single parent households) simply weren t being
born as women in this group were having abortions instead.5
An abortion is a women s right as it benefits her mental well being as having an unwanted child puts
an undebatable amount of strain on a woman. It also affects her financial well being, as a child can
cost around $233,6106 which is a substantial amount of money for anyone. Especially for teenage
mothers who are the most likely group of

The Change Clause In Government Contract Law
Contract clauses can cover many facets of commercial and business interests; whether it be
government or civilian and can take on various forms. Contract clauses are enforceable under federal
and state laws as well as any other part of a contract. Out of all the general clauses confined in
Government contracts, the Change Clause would seem to be the most important. It stands in the focus
of the contractual arrangement with other clauses denoting to and borrowing its basic practice as some
usual way of doing things. By advantage of this clause, the Government is permitted unilaterally to
alter the contract and hold the contractor to perform under the unilaterally changed contract. It is this
important departure from the old concept of mutuality, with its pointed inferences on the non
governmental party, that sets the Government contract different from the standard commercial
contract. Incidentally, this rare arrangement is altogether to the disadvantage of the contractor. The
Changes clause affords for an equitable compensation, if it is fitting. Additionally, the Changes clause,
in linking with the Disputes clause, offers an opening of reprieve if a dispute arises as to what is
reasonable compensation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Charlie Chaplin s City Lights
In the initial scene in Charlie Chaplin s City Lights, the tone is set with an establishing shot of a large
crowd accompanied by a score of trumpets. Following this shot, a title card says To the people of this
city we donate this monument; Peace and Prosperity . (Chaplin, City Lights). This title card
establishes what a large, authoritative man, presumably the mayor, is relaying to the enthusiastic
crowd below him. As he speaks, all that the film s audience hears are inarticulate buzzing noises
(today, often compared to the voices of adults in Peanuts cartoons); however, it can be assumed that
the characters in the film understand him. The woman he introduces speaks in a similar manner,
though in a higher pitch. The two stand on a stage in front of a large monument covered by a sheet.
The woman briefly introduces a bespectacled man, possibly the sculptor. A microphone is very clearly
visible towards the left side of the frame. Trumpets sound, everyone stands, the woman pulls a ribbon
and the monument is unveiled. The monument is a large stone work of three Greco Romanesque
statue figures draped in robes. One figure is seated upon a throne, another is kneeling with hands
displayed, and the third is lying back with a sword pointed toward the middle of the design. After the
sheet is removed, the crowd stirs in astonishment at the Little Tramp, asleep upon the lap of one of the
statues. Unaware of goings on the Tramp scratches and stretches while the crowd is in an upset. He

There Is An Ancient Chinese Proverb, That Goes By “Give
There is an ancient Chinese proverb, that goes by Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach
a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime . Today, I would like to discuss my cousin, Stephanie
Lam, who went to Taiwan one summer to teach English in a two week enrichment program. Her
students, ranging from 12 to 17 year olds, came from low income families around Taiwan, seeking
help in learning English, as they do not normally have the proper resources to do so. Though the
language barrier was a formidable obstacle, Stephanie bonded with her students and other teachers,
and greatly improved their English proficiency. Now, thanks to her, they understand a new language
even better than they did before, and therefore have access to ... Show more content on

There was a time she didn t know how to describe a white board marker in Chinese, so she asked her
class how to say it. One girl, who went by the name of Tracy, eagerly told [Stephanie the word], and
had a huge smile on her face (Lam). Even though the language barrier was difficult, she and her
students overcame it together with pointing and various other universal gestures and facial
expressions. This way, the students were encouraged to understand English better to communicate
with their teacher, and my cousin refined her own oral Chinese skills. The students were kind and
willing to help despite [her] poor Chinese, and didn t judge [her] either (Lam). The students were
happy enough that she came all the way to Taiwan to teach them English. They respected this, and
were eager to help her discover a new culture and improve on her Chinese abilities. The barrier was
still tough for Stephanie, but thanks to the kindness of her students, it was much easier to bear through
and succeed. It was a new and unknown world for my cousin, but she still made the most of her
experience and discovered so much more about East Asian culture. The program itself was quite
informal, and its students were there on a voluntary basis. However, they still showed a great amount
of respect towards [the teachers] (Lam). The students still followed rules and appropriate classroom
procedure, and my cousin was more lighthearted with them, as there were no

Analysis Of The Article Culture And Society
This week s materials seem to give me a huge hit. They give me headache for sure, but they also
enlighten me. Of the three materials, the one I like the most is the one entitled Culture is ordinary. I
really enjoy reading this article. For me, it is like reading a journal or personal experience. It feels so
intimate, especially the experience shared. Compared to the other pieces, the book Culture and Society
or the article the Analysis of Culture, this particular article offers a different impression. True, the
shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does
not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal
information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience.
The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to
travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out
culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the
way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt
to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is
here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is
drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is

Genre Example Of A Brochure Sample
Introduction
The genre samples for the proposal of a new grocery store near the MNSU campus will be explained
below. An email, brochure, questionnaire and a flowchart are among the genre examples explained.
Each will give a brief explanation behind choosing that specific genre example.
Email
The first Genre Sample I chose, was to write an email to Eric Anderson, the mayor of the Mankato
City Council. I decided to write to Eric Anderson because I assumed he would be the best person to
contact about starting a proposal for a new grocery store near the Minnesota State University Mankato
campus. Eric Anderson could then give me some pointers on continuing this proposal and what I
should do next in being able to get this approved for construction. Within the email to Eric Anderson, I
stated the main purpose in writing this email to him. I proceeded to state the reasoning why there is a
need for a grocery store near the MNSU campus. Finally, I asked him for any feedback on the
proposal and that I looked forward to hearing back to him. At the end of the email I tried to be as
professional as possible and listed my name and then some contact information of mine as well.
Brochure
The brochure I created will be available to the entire Mankato Community along with all the students
at Minnesota State University Mankato. This brochure will be available at many locations throughout
Mankato, with a major emphasis of them being around the MNSU campus. Some specific spots
people will be able to find these brochures are on the MNSU campus in the CSU and surrounding
business of the MNSU campus, like Kwik Trip as an example.
I created this brochure to show the reason why we should have a grocery store near the MNSU
campus. I wanted the brochure to be concise, but also wanted it to provide enough information to the
readers. I added some fun colors to the brochure to make it a little more visually appealing. I also
added some pictures throughout the brochure to give the reader some visual aids of the proposed
grocery store plan.
Questionnaire
The questionnaire will be given out to any and every student, first year freshman to a graduate student,
who is walking through the CSU at Minnesota State University Mankato. The

China s One Child Policy Summary
Journal of Medical Ethics(2004).China s one child rule risks social problems. Volume 30, Issue 4 The
journal of medical Ethics is a journal that speaks on topics such as Epidemiology and community
health. This author spoke on the high sex ratio of boys and girls being well known in china, but people
lack knowledge on the ratio of chinese population s living elsewhere. The writer used statistics to back
up her claims. They then relate their claims to social practices that the chinese population has put into
place to control the sex ratio of children. The overload of the statistics is in the text to promote the
article as a credible source. This source was short and more statistics based but still helpful for my
topic. World Future ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The authors make clear the delay of the policy being dropped and the clear effects it had on the
chinese economy. The article is very informative and shows you a detailed timeline over the course of
the policies life. This source was relevant but more opinionated but still provided factual information
to further explain. Globe Mail (2015). Five takeaways from China s one child policy. (Toronto,
Canada), F9 Saunders Doug is an author in Toronto Canada that writes many articles on government
policies around the globe. In this article he sorted the different countries population into two
categories: one being the population is growing so rapidly the government is fighting to keep it under
control, the other carrying a great concern as they try to keep their family sizes from dropping too low.
He then relates china on having this problem based on the implication of the one child policy in 1979.
The author uses a very strong opinion based style using his beliefs and backing them up with ratios
and statistics. The implication is the two child policy is supposed to benefit in some ways but won t be
effective until around 2034. The language the author uses is very easy to understand but he still finds a
way to get his point across and stays on topic. Bryan Walsh(2015). It may be too late to reverse the
damage of China s one child policy. Time Magazine, Vol. 186 Issue 20,

Example Of Predatory Pricing Strategies
Predatory pricing: It s actual effectiveness
Predatory pricing is an anticompetitive strategy that indents to drive competitors out of the market and
gain monopolistic profits. The predatory firm first lowers its price, to an extent which the revenue of
the product does not cover the costs. Their competitors must then lower their prices below their
average cost, thereby losing money as their products are sold. If they do not cut their prices, they will
lose customers due to higher prices; if they do cut their prices, they will eventually go bankrupt.
(DiLorenzo, 1992)
If the predatory firm manages to survive longer, which in most cases they will, they will eventually
gain a monopolistic position. The modern antitrust law intends to prevent damage to consumer welfare
and reduce the incentive of achieving excellence by outlawing anticompetitive behaviors. However,
presently some people still believe that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Koller, the author of The Myth of Predatory Pricing, after judging 23 cases that contains enough
information, found out that actual predation was attempted in seven cases (30 percent) and succeeded
in only four (17 percent). However other researchers did not come up with similar results. For
example, Zerbe and Cooper examining the same cases beginning in 1940 and updated to 1982
concluded that predatory pricing was present in 27 out of 40 studied cases. (Bolton, P. and Joseph, B.
and Riordan, M., 1999). These studies are only based on court cases and the settlements, which are
more likely to be strong cases, have not been accounted in the study. So, the actual number of cases of
a business conducting predatory pricing will be even more. Even Koller, who is against the legitimacy
of predatory pricing, have to admit that 17% of predatory pricing actually worked. Considering the
more recent study, more advanced techniques, like econometric measures, have been

The Santa Fe School District has over four thousand students, as a result there is quite a large school

students to say or give a speech before home varsity football games of their school. The policy was to

(Eilers, 2000) This policy was taken by families of Mormon and Catholic descent who started this

Human Psychology And Market Efficiency
Abnormal return describes the difference between the estimated and actual return of a security. For
example, an investor owns shares of GE stock that produce an average yearly return of 5%, but one
year the investor earns a return of 15%. The 10% difference is considered an abnormal return.
Active investing describes an investment strategy that involves frequent buying and selling of
securities in an attempt to outperform the market. An active investor may use strategies such as
technical analysis, fundamental analysis, or other advanced trading techniques.
Algorithmic trading also known as black box trading involves using a computer platform to buy or sell
securities using predetermined variables including timing and price. When the market exhibits the
desired characteristics the transaction will automatically execute.
Behavioral finance is a relatively new field of modern finance concerned with studying the
relationship between human psychology and market efficiency.
Capital asset pricing model is a statistical test that measures the difference between risk and reward.
The main idea behind the test is that an investor should be compensated either by the amount of time

Lewis Carroll s On The Restriction Of Expression
Lewis Carroll s Commentary on the Restriction of Expression
Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who prefered to keep his identity
secret. Dodgson was born on the 27th of January, 1832 to Charles Dodgson and Frances Jane
Lutwidge in the small village of Daresbury, located in England (Smith, Karen). Carroll authored tales
of fiction geared towards children and works of nonfiction focused on the specifics and complications
of mathematics. Carroll began writing at a young age; one of his first poems, My Fairy , spoke of a
restrictive fairy who continuously censors Carroll s emotions (Smith, Karen). The restriction of

The hunter kills the Jabberwock, and returns to his father to hear rejoice at his doing, the father saying
Come to my arms, my beamish boy! / O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! (Carroll Jabberwocky). One
important thing to note is how the hunter is described as boy , a child, who was sent to slay a terrifying
and deadly beast. This represents how society expected upper and middle class children in the
Victorian era to act as adults did (Price, Paxton). Carroll ends the poem with repetition of the first
stanza, symbolizing the recurring cycle of Victorian children being treated as small adults, who are
prefered to be seen rather and heard. The wealthier children of Victorian England were expected to
behave as if they were adults. They were taught manners and proper etiquette from an early age by
their nanny, because their parents are often absent from their lives. Adults constantly prodded them to
be polite, and they were to be seen rather than heard (Price, Paxton). Carroll creates a literal mirror
world in Through the Looking Glass by writing the adults, such as the Red and White Queens, as
being childish, contrasting and ridiculing reality where children were expected to be adults. Alice
herself is apart of the upper class, something the reader knows because of her nanny (Carrol 10
Looking Glass) and the way she has been taught to restrict her feelings from showing is evident, as
she says to herself Come,

A Theory Of Change Process
Introduction A theory of change is a method used in community or organizational planning that
identifies preconditions for a desired change to occur. The theory of change process works by first
articulating an ultimate goal; the desired change. The next step is to work backwards from the ultimate
goal by identifying outcomes that lie along the road to change. Outcomes occurring in both the short
term and long term are defined, as are the prerequisites to arrive at them. Next, a proposed
intervention for initiating action that will theoretically lead to the short term and long term outcomes,
and eventually the ultimate goal, is clearly outlined. The resources required to support the success of
the proposed intervention are then identified. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to their newsletter, GTC (2007) recaptured their mission statement that was developed at
the 1998 tribal member planning meeting. The first line of the mission statement is to re settle the
traditional village of Georgetown as a tribal communal place (GTC, 2007, p.2). This theory of change
will strategize a series of events that will assist GTC in planning to achieve this goal.
Long term outcomes Long term outcomes are essentially checkpoints situated along the road to the
change which immediately precede the ultimate goal. When the long terms outcomes are achieved, the
condition for the desired change to occur becomes present. A long term outcome GTC should plan to
arrive at along the road to change is for several tribal members to be residing in Georgetown for at
least six months per year. Establishing residency in Georgetown leads to an increase in population
which leads the goal of a being a successful, inhabited community. A second long term outcome that
will enhance the conditions for achievement of the ultimate goal is for GTC to own and operate a
small business in Georgetown. Tribal members residing in Georgetown will benefit by having an
opportunity to earn a small income to help with living expenses. The community of Georgetown and
surrounding villages will benefit from the creation of jobs and stimulated economy. Georgetown
Tribal Council will benefit by earning unrestricted funds to continue developing and improving the

Existentialism as Exemplified in ‘the Seventh Seal’
Existentialism as Exemplified in The Seventh Seal
The Seventh Seal is a 1957 Swedish film written and directed by Ingmar Bergman. The film offers
interwoven storyline. It starts with a game of chess between a medieval knight, Antonius Block, and
Death in which if Block won, Death will prolong the knight s life. This game goes on in intermittent
times.
The knight is accompanied by his squire, Jöns, as they go back to the knight s castle to be reunited
with his wife. Throughout their journey, they come across various characters and people in the village
who are struggling amidst the impending death brought about by the Black Plague.

The existence of a Supreme Being is being summoned in situations where people are in need of such
assistance. Truly a remarkable film, The Seventh Seal effectively portrays this question in sight of
existentialism. God, neither the devil, was not present. There was even a scene where Block asked the
woman accused of having contact with the devil to summon the devil so that Block will be able to ask
about the about the existence of God. Block was not able to see anything. As it turns out, the woman
was falsely accused by the priest.
Block came to a point where he asked the existence of God when he confesses to Death, disguised as a
priest but Death himself did not give answers to this. Even at the end of the film, Death did not
explain this to Block. Quoting Block, My life has been a futile pursuit, a wandering, a great deal of
talk without meaning. I feel no bitterness or self reproach because the lives of most people are very
much like this. In what pursuit did he wasted his time into? Perhaps he was pertaining to his search for
the existence of God.
Aside from Block, a more existential character than him is introduced his squire, Jöns. In Jöns
conversation with the painter in the church, he mentioned that, This is squire Jöns. He grins at Death,
mocks the Lord, laughs at himself and leers at the girls. His world is a Jöns world, believable only to
himself, ridiculous to all including himself, meaningless to Heaven and of no

of the main themes in this movie is the acceptance of people for who they truly are. In this movie we

the unbearable lightness of being Essay
The Unheard Voice of Commitment nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; What the reader understands of the
infidelity of Milan Kundera s characters in The Unbearable Lightness of Being is a mere distraction
from the real substance of the story and of the character s real purpose. Kundera offers the reader a red

character s thread that links them to one another in this story. For it is not clearly seen: in fact, it can
not be seen at all. It is the fierce absence of the word commitment that is so blatantly seen in each
individual, yet the word itself is buried so deeply inside of Tomas and Tereza that it takes an animal s

Her feeling was rather that, given the nature of the human couple, the love of man and woman is a
priori inferior to that which can exist (at least in the best instances) in the love between man and dog,
that oddity of human history probably unplanned by the creator (297). Tereza knew as the dog lay
dying that the reason why she snuggled so close to Karenin was her commitment. That same
commitment was the reason why she still slept next to Tomas every night. Love, whether we perceive
it or not, has a hold that stitches souls together in the patchwork of life. It was not until after the dog s
death that Tomas grasped this idea as well. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Karenin proved to be a

both had the same image in their eyes: a limping dog who represented ten years of their lives (293). In
the existence of a dog there was a light. This light did not fade when the dog s existence was ceased,
yet grew brighter in the eyes of a man. Tomas learned that in his years of endless escapades and

The Importance Of Making Valid Decision And Strategizing...
1
I still remember the days in my universities as if it were yesterday. In those days I worked with lot of
national and international organizations, which are working in varied sectors and bringing change by
modern methodologies. In second year of my under graduate, I founded a Non Governmental
Organization named Fep Si (Forum for Empowering people through Social Innovation and
Entertainment) and worked with another organization named Alexis Foundation as research associate
for designing public policy driven by Big Data. From the experiences of working in these
organizations I learnt about the importance of making valid decision and strategizing on business,
polity and market front by providing accurate and up to date information and performing data driven
decision making at minor level. On the other hand exposure of working with United Nations Envoy on
Youth also helped me in evolving as a leader who has the quality of thinking analytically towards
global problems. During these days I have felt many times that a lot of these problems can be solved
by integrating computer technology into data collection and management of resources, energy, capital
and various other things which are generally done by old methodologies. These instances motivated
me to believe that in the complex and interconnected world of international business and its
strategizing, the science of information management is ever more important.
My interest in analytical thinking and science dates back to my

Kootney Bicycle Case
Case Study:
Kootenay Bicycle Company
Prepared for:
Cam Shackelton
Feb 13, 2007
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Kootenay Bicycles (Kootenay) build custom frame or bike in a large metropolitan area in western
Canada since 2002. Although sales have been steadily increasing since inception, it has not been
successfully translated to profits. Signs of operational inefficiencies, lack of financing and limited
expandability limits its growth.
This report analyzes Kootenay s current strategic alternatives, with a diagnosis of the company at all
levels to formulate the best strategic direction the company should undertake. As a result, the
following strategic options were considered and Kootenay is recommended to: ... Show more content

External Environment Multiple alternatives have surfaced for Kootenay including facility expansion,
financing and channel distribution. These opportunities can assist Kootenay to address the growing
demand in Canada and North American for high quality customized frame bicycle market. Externally,
Kootenay must compete with the low cost mass manufacturer, custom bike makers at all levels and
unexpected demands in the market.
Financial Analysis As shown in Exhibit, profitability has been a concern to Kootenay gross margins
are below industry average of 28 50% for its complete bike products (Entrée; 0.83%, Dlux; 7.76%,
and Ultra; 6.73%) where materials have represented a high percentage of the costs (58 74%). Selling
frame alone has shown stronger profitability (23.33%) but overall returns needs to be improved
(ROA/ROE are 14%/ 22%). Activity ratio has shown the benefit of order to make or no overstocking
of selling products (inventory turnover is 13.07 days) but Kootenay has an extended collection period
(18.96 days). Its shortage of cash ($780) discourages any short tem obligations. As for its coverage
ratios, a large part of the equity is financed through owner s investment. Also, the allocation of 100%
salary to direct labour cost has masked any labour that should be regarded as manufacturing overhead.

Beethoven Biography Essay
Many questions go around about what day Ludwig Van Beethoven was born. Most do not know and
most likely will not ever know. They say that he was born a day or two before he was baptized on
December 17th, 1770. That was the beginning of one of the greatest musicians alive. Ludwig had two
younger brothers that had survived into adulthood. One was named Casper and the other was named
after their father Johann. His mother was a woman who stuck to her morals and his father was a man
who was a court singer, but he was more known for being an alcoholic than a musician. This is one of
the reasons Beethoven was closer with his mother rather than his father. Also, Beethoven s grandfather
was a well known musician which was a source of endless pride ... Show more content on

His father, Johann, taught him how to play instruments day in and day out. When March 28th 1778
rolled around, Beethoven performed for the first time in front of a crowd in Cologne. At that time
Beethoven was seven and a half years old, but his father said he was six years old. This always made
Beethoven think he was younger than he actually was. Beethoven s father could only teach him so
much, though, so he went to go be taught by a professional musician named Gottlob Neefe. Neefe
noticed how talented Beethoven was, so he decided to not only teach him about music but about the
works of philosophers as well. As Beethoven grew, he created pieces of music that became very
popular. His first piece, published before the age of twelve, was Nine Variations of C Minor. After that
piece came out, his teacher wrote in a magazine article about him saying he s to be, The next Mozart if
he keeps his work up. Prince Maximillian Franz, who was the prince of Austria at the time, knew
about Beethoven s music and decided to send him to Vienna to go meet Mozart in 1787 so he could
further his music education. When Beethoven and Mozart met, Mozart was said to have spoken, Do
not forget his name! It will be spoken often! . Sadly, whilst Beethoven was in Vienna, he received a
letter saying that his mother was dying. She was the only person Beethoven had a strong relationship

Essay 3: The Myth of the Melting Pot
13 November 2015
The Myth of the Melting Pot
It is popularly believed that America is the biggest and most famous melting pot in the world.
American history began with waves of immigrants bringing their own traditions, and culture to a new
country. America is not the only country that is known as a melting pot, other countries like Russia are
also practicing the melting pot; however, America is the only place that has such a diverse population
and manages to make it work. Social media around the world, especially public relations of the
American government has been working hard for years to make a uniform state that works equally for
everybody, without taking in to consideration who they are or where they came from. However, since
the beginning of that theory, we have seen a lot of prejudice between social, religious, and national
aspects around the world. Let s us consider whether or not the melting pot truly works in both
countries or if it is just a myth?
First of all, let us try to understand what it means to be prejudice. The dictionary defines prejudice as
unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial,
social, or religious group. According to the article Causes of prejudice by Vincent N. Parrillo
prejudicial attitudes combine negatively and positively in society. Additionally, he considers prejudice

we were seeing it from a milder point of view, more like the view from someone who works for those

The ideal family has a father and mother with children living in a home full of happiness. That may be
true in a movie but the reality is not every child has both of their parents. The number of incarcerated
parents has been rising for years now, so why have teachers brainwashed themselves along with the
students, that if you don t have a father and mother, it is not normal. In the story, The Night Dad Went

His life has changed with his father being away. The story of Sketch touches on many different aspects
of children going through struggles of having a parent or parents in prison. The story should be
allowed in library for children to read because there are hundreds of other children just like Sketch.
Educators need to understand that not all children have both parents in their household. There are
large groups of kids who have parents in person. From The Night Dad Went to Jail, Higgins presents a
statistic that states, One in every 43 kids in the United States has a mom or dad in prison. Sixty five
percent of men in prison are dads and 75 percent of women in prison are moms . (Higgins). Clearly,
this shows there are more children with incarcerated parents then some people assume. Since the 1980
s, there s been a steady increase in the amount of people sent tor prison, and there is not a sign of the
number of prisoner decreasing. Making this a perfect opportunity to help those children with parent in
prison to understand there are other children going to same experience. An easy way to start assisting
those children is by having them read a story that is relatable to them and make feel less isolated.
Having a connection with a book and having it be comparable to an event that a child id going through
can affect them tremendously.

The theme of the Little Golden Book Cinderella is very similar to the theme represented in the film,
Cinderella. The central theme in the film is that courage and kindness can help overcome the evils and
struggles faced in life. The kindness element in both of these stories is similar as explained before.
The kindness of Cinderella is displayed specifically in the Little Golden Book version because
Cinderella was described as the author as being kind to everyone even Lucifer (4). Lucifer was the
dark black cat who was very selfish and would exploit Cinderella because of her graciousness. The
careful illustration and depiction of Lucifer was also very significant. The illustrator decided to make
the cat a dark black color because it is an archetype that represents evil. The representation expressed
through the illustration directly overlaps with the description of the character which means that it is
very powerful for Cinderella to have the power to show kindness to the cat. Cinderella also displays
hospitality and generosity towards her Stepmother and Stepsisters in both of these versions. The
Stepmother is depicted in both of these stories as torturing and severely lacerating Cinderella.
However, Cinderella still finds a way to remain kind and overcome the anguish and hardships that she
faces. She also portrays these traits in the Grimm Brother s version of Cinderella . However, the

Globalization Nation-State
Globalization is the process through which events and decisions in one part of the world have come to
affect people in another part of the world and therefore have led to greater inter locking of different
parts of the world. It has often been claimed that globalization poses challenges about the validity of
the concept of the nation state. Some believe that because of liberalization and globalization, the need
of nation state or the concept of sovereignty within the nation state has diminished. I strongly disagree
with this statement and therefore will like to prove my point in the upcoming paragraphs.
According to Grotius, Sovereignty is the supreme political power vested in him whose acts are not
subject to any other and whose will cannot be over ridden . It shows that Sovereignty is the exclusive,
all comprehensive or universal, inalienable, permanent and indivisible power of the state.
Furthermore, the concept of the nation state is well defined by Grossberg. He claims that nation state
is one which provides some securities to people such as physical security, economic and social
security. He went further that the nation state also means that sovereign is under control of its own
leadership or people, but not under control of some other external aspects. Therefore nation state is
identified as a political community in which the country has the power to set its own laws in order to
make sure that its territorial autonomy is integrated and political sovereignty is not

I believe that my students should feel comfortable to have their say and be in charge, to an extent of
their learning. Students should be flourishing and growing in their classrooms, not being hounded and
manipulated to conforming to the teachers beliefs. How this applies to my classroom management
approach: For students to become ethical people, as opposed to people who do merely what they are
told, we cannot just tell them what to do. We have to guide and support these students to figure this
out for themselves so they can learn from each other. Whenever possible, simply ignore the covert
hostility of a student. By ignoring the behaviour, you will diffuse the situation. Remember, what you
really want is for the student to comply with your request. Whether or not the student does it in an
angry manner is not the issue. (Assertive discipline approach, 2008) I believe that this strategy of
classroom behaviour management does not suit, or compliment my beliefs as a teacher. I believe the
students should feel comfortable and supported in their learning environment and I feel as though
assertive discipline does not allow for this. I can see the positives that could arise from a management
plan such as this, but to punish children for making natural childhood mistakes is to punish them for
being children. 2. Applied Behaviour Analysis Characteristics

Essay on Green Healthy Lawns and Lots of Toxic Chemicals
Spring brings many things. A host of these are very desirable, especially for those of us who have been
cooped up in our homes for the past several months. How many of us have feverishly wished for a
favorable weather forecast so that we can plant flowers, ride bikes, walk dogs, orchestrate lawns, and
listen to chirping birds? Yet, spring also brings us a medley of a different sort a toxic soup of
chemicals. Much of this soup isn t thrust upon us from the outside; disturbingly, we choose to expose
ourselves, our children, our neighbors, and our pets to these harmful chemicals. In 2013, Americans
spent over $700,000,000 on pesticides (cumulatively weighing over sixty five million pounds) for use
on their lawns alone (1). One would think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You see, most of the chemicals that we use on our lawns and gardens are neurotoxins, endocrine
disrupters, immune inhibitors, teratogens, or carcinogens in other words, they interfere with our
brains, our hormone and antibody production, and/or cause birth defects or cancer. Shockingly, many
of them haven t even been tested to determine exactly what impact they do have on us. According to
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most pesticides have not been adequately tested to
determine their effects on people or the environment (2). How is this possible? Simply put, when it
comes to thousands of chemicals, the U.S. government largely puts the onus on us (the citizens) to
show that they are too dangerous rather than asking companies that manufacture them to show that
they are safe. In the area of pesticide production, chemicals do not need to (and therefore generally
don t) undergo a battery of safety tests. Unfortunately, an increasing body of evidence suggests that
these chemicals would fail such tests.
We should be suspicious of the chemicals recommended for lawns and gardens for three reasons. First,
key elements of the chemical industry have violated public trust in the past. Second, many chemicals
that were once considered safe have been subsequently been banned or restricted in use. And third, as
a general principle we should avoid introducing toxic

Symbols In The Destructors
Graham Greene s The Destructors (1954) is set in London nine years after the end of World War II.
The protagonist is Trevor who is the new leader of the Wormsley Common Gang. Trevor leads the
gang to destroy an old house that belongs to an old gentleman named Mr. Thomas, whom the boys call
Old Misery. Symbol is one element that supports the plot. The Glossary of Terms defines symbol as
follows: Something that means more than what it is; an object, person, situation, or action that in
addition to its literal meaning suggests other meanings as well (1647). Two symbols from the story
that support the plot are the burning of the money and the house itself. These two symbols play a huge

Old Misery lives in an old beautiful house built by Christopher Wren. The special thing about this
house is that it is the only house still standing on its block after the bombing attacks on London from
September 1940 to May 1941. This house represents Trevor s old upper class lifestyle. This is why
Trevor is so driven to destroy it. The destruction has nothing to do with popularity for their gang.
Trevor wants to get rid of all ties to his old way of living that he feels has betrayed him. It is seen in
this quote when he calls the house beautiful, T. said, It s a beautiful house, (114). In the preceding
quote we see Trevor use the word beautiful , and this is a definitely not a word used by the Wormsley
Common Gang. As seen in this in this part of the story when Greene gives insight on Blackie s
thoughts, It was the word beautiful that worried him that belonged to a class world that you could still
see parodied at the Wormsley Common Empire (115). This house being called beautiful is unfamiliar
to the gang and this house represents the upper class society that the gang often makes fun of. This
house also represents Trevor in a particular way as a beautiful and noble thing that has been broken
and ripped apart from the inside out. When Trevor moves from the upper class society, he becomes
much like this house after the destruction broken and useless. Greene makes the symbolic connection
clear: he looked round the room crowded with the unfamiliar shadows of half things, broken things,
former things (119). One of the broken things in the room is

The Garden
One of the most influential places in my life was my grandmothers garden; the garden was on half of
an acre and was large by California standards. The majority of the houses had very little space for a
yard if there was even a yard at all. My grandma wanted a garden when they bought the house: so my
grandpa dug up all the sod in the backyard, to make a space for the garden. I learned a lot about
gardening from my grandma, also a lot of analogies could be made about the garden.
The garden was very beautiful although it had no flowers. I was always impressed that there were
never any weeds to be seen. The soil was very dark and very rich; it was also very sandy, which meant
it drained well. The garden also had a very nice path that was throughout the garden, around every
plant so it was easier to take care of, I am not sure who put the path in, my grandpa or my uncle. My
grandma also taught me what plants not to grow together, she found out that when two squashes were
planted together; they cross pollinated. She had pumpkins and yellow squash that she grew together in
the same place that cross pollinated. When she planted the seeds the next year that she had saved from
the previous year: she got a cross between a pumpkin and a yellow squash. I also learned that I liked

The merit principle means that appointment and promotion decisions must be made without

Diversity and Age
In order to maintain a competitive edge the legal profession and the clients for whom they represent,

By making a healthy business case for age diversity, many employers have driven significant change
within their organization. The business case is based on a simple premise; people are living longer

Employee Training And Thermal Resistance
Overall, my strategy entering into the company was to focus more narrowly on specific market
segments because it is important for a CEO to understand that a company cannot be all things to all
customer. Consequently, I focused the company s attention on two main market segments, segments A
and C, which tended to purchase motors in larger volumes. The customers within segment A believed
power to size ratio and the support from our sales department were the most important aspect for
purchasing decisions. Then, segment C customers were willing to pay a higher price point as long as
the motors provided the needed thermal resistance and power to size ratio. As you can tell both
segments placed significant importance on the power to size ratio, which allowed the company to
easily place this as a necessary budget item. Another important aspect to make the strategy work was
to invest in employee training and thermal resistance since these were important factors to the targeted
customers. Lastly, the strategy focused heavily on the existing customers within the targeted markets
since it is important to develop positive relationships with customers to ensure they increase their
purchases and keep coming back for more motors.
Now, in order to ensure success of the strategy I needed to make some important decisions. The first
decision was to keep the price for the motors at $142 because the company s customers tended to react
negatively to price changes. Then, I lowered the discounts

Objective Racism
Objective Racism:
An essay on how segregation affected the USA, and its lingering effect on the nation
The United States of America is one of the best countries in the world. The country considers its start
as a nation to be 1776, and since then, America has stood for freedom all around the world. The USA
has had military supremacy for years; considered one of the only superpowers in the world currently.
Most importantly, however, is that it is a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures. Sadly,
most places in America do not contain this important standard of no prejudice. After the Plessy v.
Ferguson case, subtle racism became more abundant throughout the south, and although the
government resolved main problem in the 60 s, racism still abides on both ends today. In 1863,
President Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. This act freed thousands of slaves,
and enacted the abolition of slavery after the north won the Civil War. In turn, legislation passed many
amendments prohibiting any discrimination of blacks. In 1883, the Supreme Court ruled against this
amendment, they ruled that, The 14th Amendment did not give Congress authority to prevent
discrimination by private individuals. So when the states got the power to decide, most states decided
to pass laws known as Jim Crow laws. These laws segregated blacks and whites in almost all ways of
life, from schools to railroad carts. In 1892, Homer Plessy, a mixed man, sat in a white

Rhetorical Analysis Of Jfk Inaugural Address
In John F. Kennedy s Inaugural Address on January 20, 1961, Kennedy addresses the citizens of the
United States as well as the country s allies in regards to his plans on how he will run the country
during his time as president. He speaks with passion about hope for an improved United States, as
well as an improved planet overall. To deliver his message profoundly and clearly, Kennedy uses
many rhetorical devices in his speech that give his message a conversational tone as well as a clear
and compelling structure. Firstly, Kennedy uses many metaphors to place a meaningful emphasis on
his words. When he speaks to members of the audience who have just become freed from tyranny,
Kennedy uses a metaphor to describe why this will not occur in the United States when he states, ...
we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom and to remember that, in the
past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside . Kennedy
speaks of dictators who attempted to overtake a country and ultimately were destroyed by this choice.
The use of diction here promises that he understands the limits to his own power as president, and will
not push such important boundaries. Another excellent metaphor appears when the president says, ....
we offer a special pledge... to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty
. Here, Kennedy stresses the idea that poverty prevents people from advancing in society. The chains
are not physical nor visible, but can be felt heavily across the bodies of the less fortunate as they
struggle to make enough money to survive. While both of these metaphors are compelling to readers,
Kennedy also chooses to use the word we in each statement. This choice allows the listener to feel
connected personally with the president, and creates a sense of a personal relationship as Kennedy
continues. Secondly, Kennedy also uses the rhetorical devices of polysyndeton and asyndeton in his
speech. These devices create a rhythm throughout the speaker s words that work to entrance the
listener. Within the first few paragraphs of the infamous address, Kennedy employs polysyndeton. ...

He has an unshaven face and wears rugged bush gear. Jones and his other tracker continue on their
mission. When they enter the tomb the screen widens making the tombs seem narrow. The camera
concentrates on Jones s feet, and follows him through the tomb making the viewer feel involved. They
are soon aware that they have tarantulas attached to their backs, a high pitched music starts to play,
which sounds like creepy crawlies, and it makes the viewer panic. Jones warned his tracker to stay out
of the light; this shows us he has experience. They come to a deep hole, there is a camera shot from
the bottom of the drop, which make the audience realise how dangerous it is, they manage to get over
it. They are standing about ten feet from the Idol, and Jones has to control his excited companion.
Indiana goes forward alone, he was calm about the situation, and knew all the traps. The music starts
to crescendo building up tension during the scene. Jones swapped the Idol for a bag of sand. This
shows us he was prepared. The music stopped, making us feel suspense. The rocks start crumbling
down, the viewers feel urgency. They try to escape, his companion jumps over the drop and refuses to
give Jones the whip unless he gives him the Idol, but once he s received the Idol he leaves saying,
Adios amigo . When Indiana tries to jump over the drop there are rapid camera shots from different

The Two Modes of Cognitive Processing Essay
The Two Modes of Cognitive Processing
Models and experiments presented throughout the Cognitive Psychology course indicate that within
the Information Processing framework, 2 distinct modes of cognitive processing exist. The first,
concerned with low level cognition is characterised by processing which is parallel, automatic, bottom
up and not very limited by capacity. This is most clearly demonstrated by the number of things we can
hear simultaneously, see simultaneously, smell, taste and feel simultaneously. This type of low level
cognition, along with skills which have been proceduralised, can also be performed automatically;
performed without conscious attention. Automatic tasks do not ... Show more content on

The distinction between these two modes of cognitive processing, however, is not that clear cut. For
instance, tasks are not usually totally automatic nor totally attentional; when automatically swimming
up and down a pool, we may be focusing our attention on a piece of music, but we are also aware of
other swimmers and we usually pay enough attention to avoid swimming in to them. Neither is
processing usually exclusively top down or bottom up, most tasks involve both types of processing in
combination. Except maybe, when asleep, we are constantly receiving bottom up data through our 5
senses. We are also constantly reacting to these stimuli by applying top down interpretations from our
stored general knowledge representations.
On the face of it, perception would seem to depend heavily on bottom up processing (receiving data
from stimuli) and memory on top down, conceptually driven processing, as remembering depends on
retrieval of stored information. But in fact, perception can be affected by the perceiver s expectations
or by general principles such as size constancy, and remembering is performed in context, taking
account of environmental cues.
Gregory (1973) made use of visual illusions, such as the Ponzo perspective illusion to show how top
down processes affect perception. His view was that perceptions

Colonial Motivations
There were various motivations for establishing colonies in the New World. From the perspective of
the settlers, one could conclude there were two primary motivations, religious freedom, and wealth.
Depending upon one s status in the colonial times, one could consider wealth as having an abundance
of land and natural resources, not necessarily power or an abundance of gold per say. Therefore, the
poor, rich, and middle class had their own expectations of wealth and religious freedom that motivated
establishing the colonies. Similarly, the European powers that were sending supplies and funding the
colonial establishments were driven to expand their wealth and impose their religious principles. In
discussion regarding the motivations of

The Exorcist Is One Wacky Series
The Exorcist franchise is one wacky series. You had the amazing original film, which was one of the
most intense horror films to come out at the time. Then, X years later we got the crazy, shitty Exorcist
II: The Heretic, that had James Earl Jones flying on the back of a bug through the desert or something
equally stupid. It wasn t until X years later that we finally got a proper sequel, The Exorcist III, but
that too was plagued with issues, with both Director/Author William Peter Blatty and the studio not
agreeing on what they wanted as a final product. I haven t even mentioned the even crazier Exorcist:
The Beginning, directed by Renny Harlin, which was later re released as the slightly superior version

Although the book tells you that Detective Kinderman was a big time friend with Karras, but honestly,
I never felt that when reading the original The Exorcist novel.
The story behind Legion focuses on a murder investigation involving the deceased Gemini Killer and
Kinderman trying to figure who exactly is behind these most recent killings, which bear the true MO
of the Gemini Killer. He eventually ends up interviewing a psych patient who says he is the Gemini
Killer, but when Kinderman visits him, he is completely thrown for a loop when he sees the definitely
should be dead Father Damien Karras, who is being possessed by the Killer. The rest of the novel,
unfortunately, features pages and pages of Blatty s theories on evaluation and random nonsense that
has nothing to do with the main story. Honestly, the book ended up being awful because of that.
When 1990 was approaching, a sequel to The Exorcist was being demanded. Blatty came on as
writer/director and went to work adapting his once screenplay, now book, Legion. The original idea
for Exorcist III, at the time called Legion, was to follow the original story pretty closely and not have
any sort of exorcism at all. Blatty hired actor Brad Dourif to play Damien Karras, as Jason Miller was
indisposed at the time and the film pretty much was wrapped up before the studio was like Hey, why

Why Do Marine Animals Use Sign Language
Humans communicate by making sounds that are part of an entire language that can be spoken,
written, and read, using body language, and, in some cases, using sign language. Marine animals have
a slightly different approach, although they use sound to communicate as well. There are many things
that affect the messages marine animals send to each other. The main factors are the rate, pitch, and
structure of the sounds they make. Whales and dolphins can use echolocation to locate food and other
objects. Echolocation is the process in which an animal makes a sound and listens to see how long it
takes to make it be reflected back to them when it comes into contact with an object. This tells the
animals many things about the object, such as how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Salinity, temperature, and the depth of the water can affect the speed of sound in the ocean. The ways
in which humans and marine animals produce sound is very different. Humans produce sound by
expelling a lot of air over their vocal chords. Dolphins and other marine animals cannot afford to
waste such precious oxygen, so they have engineered other ways to accomplish this goal. Whales and
dolphins pass air through air sacs they have in their heads to produce noises. Some fish vibrate their
swim bladders, crustaceans close their claws at high speeds to make air bubbles that pop and produce
noise, and seals and sea lions move their larynx to produce growling sounds. Humans and marine
animals also hear noises differently. Humans can hear sounds when sound waves strike our ear drums,
causing bones in our ears to vibrate. This then makes the fluid in our inner ear vibrate, and vibrates the
hair cells as well. The hairs that are vibrating are connected to neurons that lead to the auditory nerve
and sends signals to our brain. Our brain then interprets the signals into information from the sound
waves. Dolphins and whales have a different process for interpreting sound. Their lower jaw, called a
mandible, carries sound to the bones in their middle ear and from there the vibrations follow the same
path as the human hearing

Analysis Of The Estrangement By Jamaica Kincaid, My Speech...
One s judgement of others is a commonality amongst all people; however, to admit one is wrong about
one s perceptions is infrequent. In both essays, The Estrangement by Jamaica Kincaid, and My Speech
at West Point by Marjane Satrapi in the book The Writer s Presence, the writers make comment on
their life experiences particularly about their bad judgment of others and the impact that has had on
them. Kincaid s essay is about the rough relationship she had with her mother and how her criticism of
her changed after her experience as a mother. Similarly, Satrapi writes about the point in her life she
began learning one she realizes that the view she had of the people in her country was wrong during
her time at West Point. Both provide ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, she accepts her mistake and learns from her experience by acknowledging it, I don t
know anything (Kincaid 249). Ultimately, Satrapi conveys that there not only needs to be progress in
her country, but in her thinking as well. This brings to light how the only way to diminish social
issues, our opinions need to be altered.
Likewise, Kincaid wrongly judges her mother. In her essay, The Estrangement she tells that she
stopped talking to her mother after she spoke unkindly about her in a conversation they had through
the phone. She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not by her nor her
younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often than not and that
the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). In other words, her
mother was unaffectionate to them. A statement she makes evident when she tells about the time his
step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he would have liked that
based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be dead than spend eternity
lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother for the treatment she gave
them. However, later in the text, there is a shift in tone: from hate to acknowledgement and love. Her
perception of her mother changes after she realizes how

Toyota Motor Corporation
Toyota Motor Corporation Ivan Ruiz DeVry University Toyota Motor Corporation has a long and
interesting history behind it. In 1933, Kiichiro Toyoda traveled to the United States. There he visited
many car companies that produces automobiles (Toyota Motor Corporation Company Profile,
Information, Business Description, History, Background Information on Toyota Motor Corporation,
2015) there he learned about the production lines on how to build cars. Then shortly upon his return to
Japan, he decided that he wanted to establish an automobile establishment with in his father s factory.

Today consumers are more aware of the negative effects (air pollution) caused by cars. They know
what the affects can cause to the earth and therefore consumers are more likely to buy hybrid cars
instead of a regular car. This will limit the amount of CO2 pumped into the earth s atmosphere. 2.
Increasing fuel prices. One other advantage that Toyota has working for them is the fuel prices
incising at a high rate. With the fuel prices increasing consumers are looking for fuel friendly vehicles
that will cost less at the pump (Jurevicius, 2013). Threats 1. Decreasing fuel prices. Then there is a
possibility of fuel prices decreasing at a future time. Therefore, hybrid car and electric cars will
become less favored. 2. Rising raw material prices. Rising raw material prices increase so will the the
price of the cars. The prices are important to manufactures because this means that they will need to
increase the sales and so their profits will decrease. 3. Natural disasters. Natural disasters can be a
huge impact on Toyota s manufacturing facilities. Recent events have proved it in countries such as
China, Thailand, and Japan (Jurevicius, 2013). Competition Of course Toyota Motor s isn t the biggest
name out there. Any company who is in the car business becomes Toyota s competitor. However, the
three biggest competitors Toyota has are Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company, and Honda

The Causes And Impact Of The Transcontinental Railroad
The Transcontinental Railroad was a technological breakthrough that managed to make the USA feel
smaller to travelers. Railroad systems had been in place decades before the transcontinental railroad
had been constructed. However, these systems were not in synch as there were many different railroad
companies and even more laws in place from state to state. This was in part due to the civil war,
during this period both governments wanted better transportation of goods and troops. This caused
many factors like track gauge (spacings of the rails) lengths to differ vastly. These differences in
factors caused the slowing of transportation as, many of the times, people and goods being transported
had to move trains where these railways met up. Also, many railways would not intersect towns,
causing them to board trains on the other side of town. The Transcontinental Railroad was one of the
stepping stones towards standardization as these factors were enforced by law for uniformity, and
towns began to be built around these railways. This allowed people to travel from the eastern coast to
the western coast without having to swap railways many times and would bring people and their ideas
closer together, and, most importantly, caused the massive increase in western expansion. The
transcontinental railroad was brought forth due to the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862, Chinese laborers,
and western migration allowing for decreased travel times, bulk movement of resources and products,
and

  • 2. The Importance Of Modern Human Progress Firstly we have to define modern human progress, which is defined as the theory that advances in technology, science, and social organization inevitably produce an improvement in the human condition. 1 This means that people become happier in terms of quality of life, economic development and lack of crime. It is the culmination of modern technology and freeing yourself from the shackles of society s previous social preconceptions. With that said the Catholic church harbours some questionable ethical beliefs; contraception, divorce, end of life care and their attitude to abortion. They believe that life begins at conception so undergoing an abortion is a grave moral sin. They argue that a zygote is not a potential person but a person with potential. The Catholic church is the world s largest religious group united under one leader (the Pope) so therefore it has tremendous influence over world politics. This means that when the pope says I declare that direct abortion, that is, abortion willed as an end or as a means, always constitutes a grave moral disorder, since it is the deliberate killing of an innocent human being 2 a lot of people believe his orders and deny innocent women their right to choose.3 Mother Teresa was also a staunch opponent of abortion saying that If a mother can kill her own child, what is left but for us to kill each other. 4 She has a tremendous amount of leverage in this matter. It can be argued that abortion is good for society as a whole as Steven Levitt found a strong link between legalised abortion and the fall in crime rates in the late 1990s. This is because abortion was legalised in 1973 in the USA and crime rates fell sharply 20 years later. This is down to the fact that children more likely to cause trouble (from teenage, single parent households) simply weren t being born as women in this group were having abortions instead.5 An abortion is a women s right as it benefits her mental well being as having an unwanted child puts an undebatable amount of strain on a woman. It also affects her financial well being, as a child can cost around $233,6106 which is a substantial amount of money for anyone. Especially for teenage mothers who are the most likely group of ... • 3. The Change Clause In Government Contract Law Contract clauses can cover many facets of commercial and business interests; whether it be government or civilian and can take on various forms. Contract clauses are enforceable under federal and state laws as well as any other part of a contract. Out of all the general clauses confined in Government contracts, the Change Clause would seem to be the most important. It stands in the focus of the contractual arrangement with other clauses denoting to and borrowing its basic practice as some usual way of doing things. By advantage of this clause, the Government is permitted unilaterally to alter the contract and hold the contractor to perform under the unilaterally changed contract. It is this important departure from the old concept of mutuality, with its pointed inferences on the non governmental party, that sets the Government contract different from the standard commercial contract. Incidentally, this rare arrangement is altogether to the disadvantage of the contractor. The Changes clause affords for an equitable compensation, if it is fitting. Additionally, the Changes clause, in linking with the Disputes clause, offers an opening of reprieve if a dispute arises as to what is reasonable compensation. ... • 4. Analysis Of Charlie Chaplin s City Lights In the initial scene in Charlie Chaplin s City Lights, the tone is set with an establishing shot of a large crowd accompanied by a score of trumpets. Following this shot, a title card says To the people of this city we donate this monument; Peace and Prosperity . (Chaplin, City Lights). This title card establishes what a large, authoritative man, presumably the mayor, is relaying to the enthusiastic crowd below him. As he speaks, all that the film s audience hears are inarticulate buzzing noises (today, often compared to the voices of adults in Peanuts cartoons); however, it can be assumed that the characters in the film understand him. The woman he introduces speaks in a similar manner, though in a higher pitch. The two stand on a stage in front of a large monument covered by a sheet. The woman briefly introduces a bespectacled man, possibly the sculptor. A microphone is very clearly visible towards the left side of the frame. Trumpets sound, everyone stands, the woman pulls a ribbon and the monument is unveiled. The monument is a large stone work of three Greco Romanesque statue figures draped in robes. One figure is seated upon a throne, another is kneeling with hands displayed, and the third is lying back with a sword pointed toward the middle of the design. After the sheet is removed, the crowd stirs in astonishment at the Little Tramp, asleep upon the lap of one of the statues. Unaware of goings on the Tramp scratches and stretches while the crowd is in an upset. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime . Today, I would like to discuss my cousin, Stephanie Lam, who went to Taiwan one summer to teach English in a two week enrichment program. Her students, ranging from 12 to 17 year olds, came from low income families around Taiwan, seeking help in learning English, as they do not normally have the proper resources to do so. Even though the language barrier was difficult, she and her students overcame it together with pointing and various other universal gestures and facial expressions. This way, the students were encouraged to understand English better to communicate with their teacher, and my cousin refined her own oral Chinese skills. The students were kind and willing to help despite [her] poor Chinese, and didn t judge [her] either (Lam). The students were happy enough that she came all the way to Taiwan to teach them English. They respected this, and were eager to help her discover a new culture and improve on her Chinese abilities. The barrier was still tough for Stephanie, but thanks to the kindness of her students, it was much easier to bear through and succeed. It was a new and unknown world for my cousin, but she still made the most of her experience and discovered so much more about East Asian culture. • 6. Analysis Of The Article Culture And Society This week s materials seem to give me a huge hit. They give me headache for sure, but they also enlighten me. Of the three materials, the one I like the most is the one entitled Culture is ordinary. I really enjoy reading this article. For me, it is like reading a journal or personal experience. It feels so intimate, especially the experience shared. Compared to the other pieces, the book Culture and Society or the article the Analysis of Culture, this particular article offers a different impression. True, the shortness of the article first grabbed my attention. However, it does not necessarily mean that it does not provide a poignant information. On the contrary, it gives me a more contextual and personal information about what culture is. In addition, this article reminds me of my own cultural experience. The title of the article, Culture is ordinary, somewhat brings me the message that one does not need to travel far just to find out what culture is because as emphasized by Williams we can easily find out culture from where they live; from the common thing in life, straight from your own door. For me, the way Williams begins his discussion by giving the readers the description of his hometown (trip) is apt to give a sense that culture is ordinary; that culture is not something unreachable or unseen, for it is here, around us. The introduction also serves to reinforce how ordinary and simple culture is that it is drawn from the everyday life. The bus route is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Genre Example Of A Brochure Sample Introduction The genre samples for the proposal of a new grocery store near the MNSU campus will be explained below. An email, brochure, questionnaire and a flowchart are among the genre examples explained. Each will give a brief explanation behind choosing that specific genre example. Email The first Genre Sample I chose, was to write an email to Eric Anderson, the mayor of the Mankato City Council. I decided to write to Eric Anderson because I assumed he would be the best person to contact about starting a proposal for a new grocery store near the Minnesota State University Mankato campus. Eric Anderson could then give me some pointers on continuing this proposal and what I should do next in being able to get this approved for construction. Within the email to Eric Anderson, I stated the main purpose in writing this email to him. I proceeded to state the reasoning why there is a need for a grocery store near the MNSU campus. Finally, I asked him for any feedback on the proposal and that I looked forward to hearing back to him. At the end of the email I tried to be as professional as possible and listed my name and then some contact information of mine as well. Brochure The brochure I created will be available to the entire Mankato Community along with all the students at Minnesota State University Mankato. This brochure will be available at many locations throughout Mankato, with a major emphasis of them being around the MNSU campus. Some specific spots people will be able to find these brochures are on the MNSU campus in the CSU and surrounding business of the MNSU campus, like Kwik Trip as an example. I created this brochure to show the reason why we should have a grocery store near the MNSU campus. I wanted the brochure to be concise, but also wanted it to provide enough information to the readers. I added some fun colors to the brochure to make it a little more visually appealing. I also added some pictures throughout the brochure to give the reader some visual aids of the proposed grocery store plan. Questionnaire The questionnaire will be given out to any and every student, first year freshman to a graduate student, who is walking through the CSU at Minnesota State University Mankato. The ... • 9. Example Of Predatory Pricing Strategies Predatory pricing: It s actual effectiveness Predatory pricing is an anticompetitive strategy that indents to drive competitors out of the market and gain monopolistic profits. The predatory firm first lowers its price, to an extent which the revenue of the product does not cover the costs. Their competitors must then lower their prices below their average cost, thereby losing money as their products are sold. If they do not cut their prices, they will lose customers due to higher prices; if they do cut their prices, they will eventually go bankrupt. (DiLorenzo, 1992) If the predatory firm manages to survive longer, which in most cases they will, they will eventually gain a monopolistic position. The modern antitrust law intends to prevent damage to consumer welfare and reduce the incentive of achieving excellence by outlawing anticompetitive behaviors. For example, Zerbe and Cooper examining the same cases beginning in 1940 and updated to 1982 concluded that predatory pricing was present in 27 out of 40 studied cases. (Bolton, P. and Joseph, B. and Riordan, M., 1999). These studies are only based on court cases and the settlements, which are more likely to be strong cases, have not been accounted in the study. So, the actual number of cases of a business conducting predatory pricing will be even more. Lewis Carroll s On The Restriction Of Expression Lewis Carroll s Commentary on the Restriction of Expression Lewis Carroll is the pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, who prefered to keep his identity secret. Dodgson was born on the 27th of January, 1832 to Charles Dodgson and Frances Jane Lutwidge in the small village of Daresbury, located in England (Smith, Karen). Carroll authored tales of fiction geared towards children and works of nonfiction focused on the specifics and complications of mathematics. The hunter kills the Jabberwock, and returns to his father to hear rejoice at his doing, the father saying Come to my arms, my beamish boy! / O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! (Carroll Jabberwocky). One important thing to note is how the hunter is described as boy , a child, who was sent to slay a terrifying and deadly beast. This represents how society expected upper and middle class children in the Victorian era to act as adults did (Price, Paxton). Carroll ends the poem with repetition of the first stanza, symbolizing the recurring cycle of Victorian children being treated as small adults, who are prefered to be seen rather and heard. The wealthier children of Victorian England were expected to behave as if they were adults. They were taught manners and proper etiquette from an early age by their nanny, because their parents are often absent from their lives. Adults constantly prodded them to be polite, and they were to be seen rather than heard (Price, Paxton). Carroll creates a literal mirror world in Through the Looking Glass by writing the adults, such as the Red and White Queens, as being childish, contrasting and ridiculing reality where children were expected to be adults. Alice herself is apart of the upper class, something the reader knows because of her nanny (Carrol 10 Looking Glass) and the way she has been taught to restrict her feelings from showing is evident, as she says to herself Come, ... The theory of change process works by first articulating an ultimate goal; the desired change. The next step is to work backwards from the ultimate goal by identifying outcomes that lie along the road to change. Outcomes occurring in both the short term and long term are defined, as are the prerequisites to arrive at them. Next, a proposed intervention for initiating action that will theoretically lead to the short term and long term outcomes, and eventually the ultimate goal, is clearly outlined. The resources required to support the success of the proposed intervention are then identified. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This theory of change will strategize a series of events that will assist GTC in planning to achieve this goal. Block was not able to see anything. As it turns out, the woman was falsely accused by the priest. It s a movie that not only entertains, but it also teaches valuable lessons. Shrek puts the viewers in awe and gets them excited, so this movie is definitely worth watching! Kundera offers the reader a red herring and only through close examination can one dissect and abstract the true essence of each character s thread that links them to one another in this story. Tereza knew as the dog lay dying that the reason why she snuggled so close to Karenin was her commitment. That same commitment was the reason why she still slept next to Tomas every night. • 19. The Importance Of Making Valid Decision And Strategizing... 1 I still remember the days in my universities as if it were yesterday. In those days I worked with lot of national and international organizations, which are working in varied sectors and bringing change by modern methodologies. In second year of my under graduate, I founded a Non Governmental Organization named Fep Si (Forum for Empowering people through Social Innovation and Entertainment) and worked with another organization named Alexis Foundation as research associate for designing public policy driven by Big Data. From the experiences of working in these organizations I learnt about the importance of making valid decision and strategizing on business, polity and market front by providing accurate and up to date information and performing data driven decision making at minor level. On the other hand exposure of working with United Nations Envoy on Youth also helped me in evolving as a leader who has the quality of thinking analytically towards global problems. During these days I have felt many times that a lot of these problems can be solved by integrating computer technology into data collection and management of resources, energy, capital and various other things which are generally done by old methodologies. These instances motivated me to believe that in the complex and interconnected world of international business and its strategizing, the science of information management is ever more important. They say that he was born a day or two before he was baptized on December 17th, 1770. That was the beginning of one of the greatest musicians alive. Ludwig had two younger brothers that had survived into adulthood. One was named Casper and the other was named after their father Johann. His mother was a woman who stuck to her morals and his father was a man who was a court singer, but he was more known for being an alcoholic than a musician. Beethoven s father could only teach him so much, though, so he went to go be taught by a professional musician named Gottlob Neefe. Neefe noticed how talented Beethoven was, so he decided to not only teach him about music but about the works of philosophers as well. The Myth Of The Melting Pot Elina Manukyan Professor Lianna Manukyan ESL 101 Essay 3: The Myth of the Melting Pot 13 November 2015 The Myth of the Melting Pot It is popularly believed that America is the biggest and most famous melting pot in the world. American history began with waves of immigrants bringing their own traditions, and culture to a new country. America is not the only country that is known as a melting pot, other countries like Russia are also practicing the melting pot; however, America is the only place that has such a diverse population and manages to make it work. Social media around the world, especially public relations of the American government has been working hard for years to make a uniform state that works equally for everybody, without taking in to consideration who they are or where they came from. However, since the beginning of that theory, we have seen a lot of prejudice between social, religious, and national aspects around the world. Let s us consider whether or not the melting pot truly works in both countries or if it is just a myth? First of all, let us try to understand what it means to be prejudice. The dictionary defines prejudice as unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, especially of a hostile nature, regarding an ethnic, racial, social, or religious group. From The Night Dad Went to Jail, Higgins presents a statistic that states, One in every 43 kids in the United States has a mom or dad in prison. Sixty five percent of men in prison are dads and 75 percent of women in prison are moms . (Higgins). Clearly, this shows there are more children with incarcerated parents then some people assume. Lucifer was the dark black cat who was very selfish and would exploit Cinderella because of her graciousness. The careful illustration and depiction of Lucifer was also very significant. The illustrator decided to make the cat a dark black color because it is an archetype that represents evil. The representation expressed through the illustration directly overlaps with the description of the character which means that it is very powerful for Cinderella to have the power to show kindness to the cat. Cinderella also displays hospitality and generosity towards her Stepmother and Stepsisters in both of these versions. Some believe that because of liberalization and globalization, the need of nation state or the concept of sovereignty within the nation state has diminished. I strongly disagree with this statement and therefore will like to prove my point in the upcoming paragraphs. According to Grotius, Sovereignty is the supreme political power vested in him whose acts are not subject to any other and whose will cannot be over ridden . It shows that Sovereignty is the exclusive, all comprehensive or universal, inalienable, permanent and indivisible power of the state. Furthermore, the concept of the nation state is well defined by Grossberg. He claims that nation state is one which provides some securities to people such as physical security, economic and social security. He went further that the nation state also means that sovereign is under control of its own leadership or people, but not under control of some other external aspects. Therefore nation state is identified as a political community in which the country has the power to set its own laws in order to make sure that its territorial autonomy is integrated and political sovereignty is not ... How many of us have feverishly wished for a favorable weather forecast so that we can plant flowers, ride bikes, walk dogs, orchestrate lawns, and listen to chirping birds? Yet, spring also brings us a medley of a different sort a toxic soup of chemicals. Much of this soup isn t thrust upon us from the outside; disturbingly, we choose to expose ourselves, our children, our neighbors, and our pets to these harmful chemicals. Shockingly, many of them haven t even been tested to determine exactly what impact they do have on us. According to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), most pesticides have not been adequately tested to determine their effects on people or the environment (2). How is this possible? Simply put, when it comes to thousands of chemicals, the U.S. government largely puts the onus on us (the citizens) to show that they are too dangerous rather than asking companies that manufacture them to show that they are safe. In the area of pesticide production, chemicals do not need to (and therefore generally don t) undergo a battery of safety tests. Unfortunately, an increasing body of evidence suggests that these chemicals would fail such tests. We should be suspicious of the chemicals recommended for lawns and gardens for three reasons. This house represents Trevor s old upper class lifestyle. This is why Trevor is so driven to destroy it. The destruction has nothing to do with popularity for their gang. Trevor wants to get rid of all ties to his old way of living that he feels has betrayed him. It is seen in this quote when he calls the house beautiful, T. said, It s a beautiful house, (114). • 36. Employee Training And Thermal Resistance Overall, my strategy entering into the company was to focus more narrowly on specific market segments because it is important for a CEO to understand that a company cannot be all things to all customer. Consequently, I focused the company s attention on two main market segments, segments A and C, which tended to purchase motors in larger volumes. The customers within segment A believed power to size ratio and the support from our sales department were the most important aspect for purchasing decisions. Then, segment C customers were willing to pay a higher price point as long as the motors provided the needed thermal resistance and power to size ratio. As you can tell both segments placed significant importance on the power to size ratio, which allowed the company to easily place this as a necessary budget item. Another important aspect to make the strategy work was to invest in employee training and thermal resistance since these were important factors to the targeted customers. Lastly, the strategy focused heavily on the existing customers within the targeted markets since it is important to develop positive relationships with customers to ensure they increase their purchases and keep coming back for more motors. Now, in order to ensure success of the strategy I needed to make some important decisions. The first decision was to keep the price for the motors at $142 because the company s customers tended to react negatively to price changes. Then, I lowered the discounts ... • 37. Objective Racism Objective Racism: An essay on how segregation affected the USA, and its lingering effect on the nation The United States of America is one of the best countries in the world. The country considers its start as a nation to be 1776, and since then, America has stood for freedom all around the world. The USA has had military supremacy for years; considered one of the only superpowers in the world currently. Most importantly, however, is that it is a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures. Sadly, most places in America do not contain this important standard of no prejudice. After the Plessy v. Ferguson case, subtle racism became more abundant throughout the south, and although the government resolved main problem in the 60 s, racism still abides on both ends today. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation. This act freed thousands of slaves, and enacted the abolition of slavery after the north won the Civil War. In turn, legislation passed many amendments prohibiting any discrimination of blacks. In 1883, the Supreme Court ruled against this amendment, they ruled that, The 14th Amendment did not give Congress authority to prevent discrimination by private individuals. So when the states got the power to decide, most states decided to pass laws known as Jim Crow laws. These laws segregated blacks and whites in almost all ways of life, from schools to railroad carts. In 1892, Homer Plessy, a mixed man, sat in a white ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Rhetorical Analysis Of Jfk Inaugural Address In John F. Kennedy s Inaugural Address on January 20, 1961, Kennedy addresses the citizens of the United States as well as the country s allies in regards to his plans on how he will run the country during his time as president. He speaks with passion about hope for an improved United States, as well as an improved planet overall. To deliver his message profoundly and clearly, Kennedy uses many rhetorical devices in his speech that give his message a conversational tone as well as a clear and compelling structure. Firstly, Kennedy uses many metaphors to place a meaningful emphasis on his words. When he speaks to members of the audience who have just become freed from tyranny, Kennedy uses a metaphor to describe why this will not occur in the United States when he states, ... we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside . Kennedy speaks of dictators who attempted to overtake a country and ultimately were destroyed by this choice. The use of diction here promises that he understands the limits to his own power as president, and will not push such important boundaries. Another excellent metaphor appears when the president says, .... we offer a special pledge... to assist free men and free governments in casting off the chains of poverty . Here, Kennedy stresses the idea that poverty prevents people from advancing in society. The chains are not physical nor visible, but can be felt heavily across the bodies of the less fortunate as they struggle to make enough money to survive. While both of these metaphors are compelling to readers, Kennedy also chooses to use the word we in each statement. This choice allows the listener to feel connected personally with the president, and creates a sense of a personal relationship as Kennedy continues. Secondly, Kennedy also uses the rhetorical devices of polysyndeton and asyndeton in his speech. These devices create a rhythm throughout the speaker s words that work to entrance the listener. Within the first few paragraphs of the infamous address, Kennedy employs polysyndeton. ... we shall pay any price, bear any ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Two Modes of Cognitive Processing Essay The Two Modes of Cognitive Processing Models and experiments presented throughout the Cognitive Psychology course indicate that within the Information Processing framework, 2 distinct modes of cognitive processing exist. The first, concerned with low level cognition is characterised by processing which is parallel, automatic, bottom up and not very limited by capacity. This is most clearly demonstrated by the number of things we can hear simultaneously, see simultaneously, smell, taste and feel simultaneously. This type of low level cognition, along with skills which have been proceduralised, can also be performed automatically; performed without conscious attention. Automatic tasks do not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The distinction between these two modes of cognitive processing, however, is not that clear cut. For instance, tasks are not usually totally automatic nor totally attentional; when automatically swimming up and down a pool, we may be focusing our attention on a piece of music, but we are also aware of other swimmers and we usually pay enough attention to avoid swimming in to them. Neither is processing usually exclusively top down or bottom up, most tasks involve both types of processing in combination. Except maybe, when asleep, we are constantly receiving bottom up data through our 5 senses. We are also constantly reacting to these stimuli by applying top down interpretations from our stored general knowledge representations. On the face of it, perception would seem to depend heavily on bottom up processing (receiving data from stimuli) and memory on top down, conceptually driven processing, as remembering depends on retrieval of stored information. But in fact, perception can be affected by the perceiver s expectations or by general principles such as size constancy, and remembering is performed in context, taking account of environmental cues. Gregory (1973) made use of visual illusions, such as the Ponzo perspective illusion to show how top down processes affect perception. His view was that perceptions ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why Do Marine Animals Use Sign Language Humans communicate by making sounds that are part of an entire language that can be spoken, written, and read, using body language, and, in some cases, using sign language. Marine animals have a slightly different approach, although they use sound to communicate as well. There are many things that affect the messages marine animals send to each other. The main factors are the rate, pitch, and structure of the sounds they make. Whales and dolphins can use echolocation to locate food and other objects. Echolocation is the process in which an animal makes a sound and listens to see how long it takes to make it be reflected back to them when it comes into contact with an object. This tells the animals many things about the object, such as how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Salinity, temperature, and the depth of the water can affect the speed of sound in the ocean. The ways in which humans and marine animals produce sound is very different. Humans produce sound by expelling a lot of air over their vocal chords. Dolphins and other marine animals cannot afford to waste such precious oxygen, so they have engineered other ways to accomplish this goal. Whales and dolphins pass air through air sacs they have in their heads to produce noises. Some fish vibrate their swim bladders, crustaceans close their claws at high speeds to make air bubbles that pop and produce noise, and seals and sea lions move their larynx to produce growling sounds. Humans and marine animals also hear noises differently. Humans can hear sounds when sound waves strike our ear drums, causing bones in our ears to vibrate. This then makes the fluid in our inner ear vibrate, and vibrates the hair cells as well. The hairs that are vibrating are connected to neurons that lead to the auditory nerve and sends signals to our brain. Our brain then interprets the signals into information from the sound waves. Dolphins and whales have a different process for interpreting sound. Their lower jaw, called a mandible, carries sound to the bones in their middle ear and from there the vibrations follow the same path as the human hearing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In her essay, The Estrangement she tells that she stopped talking to her mother after she spoke unkindly about her in a conversation they had through the phone. She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not by her nor her younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often than not and that the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). In other words, her mother was unaffectionate to them. A statement she makes evident when she tells about the time his step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he would have liked that based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be dead than spend eternity lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother for the treatment she gave them. • 51. The Causes And Impact Of The Transcontinental Railroad The Transcontinental Railroad was a technological breakthrough that managed to make the USA feel smaller to travelers. Railroad systems had been in place decades before the transcontinental railroad had been constructed. However, these systems were not in synch as there were many different railroad companies and even more laws in place from state to state. This was in part due to the civil war, during this period both governments wanted better transportation of goods and troops. This caused many factors like track gauge (spacings of the rails) lengths to differ vastly. These differences in factors caused the slowing of transportation as, many of the times, people and goods being transported had to move trains where these railways met up. Also, many railways would not intersect towns, causing them to board trains on the other side of town. The Transcontinental Railroad was one of the stepping stones towards standardization as these factors were enforced by law for uniformity, and towns began to be built around these railways. This allowed people to travel from the eastern coast to the western coast without having to swap railways many times and would bring people and their ideas closer together, and, most importantly, caused the massive increase in western expansion. The transcontinental railroad was brought forth due to the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862, Chinese laborers, and western migration allowing for decreased travel times, bulk movement of resources and products, and ...
