The Long Term Effects Of Social Disadvantage Essay
to help industry and commerce make the most of its human resources. However, psychological
test data can also confront us with problems which are difficult to handle. Many of the
controversies which surround test use reflect existing problems in society. For example,
differences in test scores between blacks and whites in the United States are generally
considered to be a reflection of the long term effects of social disadvantage. Research shows that
these differences in test scores are not due to bias in the tests. They are real, and are predictive
of real social outcomes, to differences in academic attainment, differences in job performance,
and so on. Given the potential power of psychological tests as a tool, it is vital that they are used
carefully and appropriately. Use of tests should always be under the supervision of a competent
psychologist, or other suitably qualified, accredited person, and should always be carried out with
due regard for local cultural factors and for professional and ethical codes of practice. In the United
Kingdom, a national system of certification of test user competencies is now in place which is
based on standards for test use. In most countries, the national psychological association can
provide information and guidance covering the supply and use of tests, and standards for test
construction. Across countries, the International Test Commission liaises between national
psychological associations and provides guidance on technical issues

Significance Of The Soweto Uprising
The Soweto Uprising was one of the worst events in the history of education with a lot of young
casualties/ deaths, all this to make a point/ let people see what is wrong in the education system.
Did this event change education in South Africa?
The event of the Soweto Uprising was on the day of June 16th 1976/ June 16th 1976, students from
the township of Soweto gathered in front of their school. The original plan was for student from all
over Soweto to have a march to the Department of Bantu Education, and deliver a message about
their complaint. They complained about the fact that Afrikaans would be the medium of
instructions in all the schools. Learners could not understand the subjects and this created an issue.
Police then got the order to shoot and kill the protesting students. Seven hundred students died that
day and the 13 year old Hector Peterson was the symbol of the uprising. The uprising changed
education and is still in affect after all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this decade a new sense of resistance had been brewing . Black students, led by Steve
Biko, formed the South African Student s Organization (SASO). A lot of events led to the
Uprising: The school children were influenced by the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1970
s; and workers strikes in Durban in 1975; liberation of neighbouring Angola and Mozambique in
1975. (Soweto Student Uprising, n.d.)
Though the children was influenced by the Black Consciousness Movement, they do not remember
any influence from outside organizations that changed their decision to protest the use of Afrikaans.
From 1976, Afrikaans were to be the medium of instructions from grade 7. English and Afrikaans
were on a 50 50 basis. This meant that subjects like maths would be taught in Afrikaans and
subjects like Science would be taught in English. Black people were forced to learn in Afrikaans
because it was believed that Afrikaans would discipline

What Causes Belief In Conspiracy Theory
Amongst Lies and Deception
What causes belief in conspiracy theories? Is it low self esteem, feelings of powerlessness, and
outright paranoia? Or could there be real evidence and substance to validate the claims of
conspiracy theorists? Perhaps just old, everyday distrust in the governing powers of the land?
However, there is one central idea that could be the foundation for all the different views on the
relevant events that inspire such widespread intrigue. This single, overarching idea is that major
and significant events demand marked and specific causes for the aforementioned occurrences. One
of the more common explanations for belief in conspiracy theories, is that the supporters adhere to
the speculations because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, this doesn t validate any and every conspiracy ever garnered, but it does raise some
questions as to the validity of government statements and news reports. But an even more
meaningful origin may yet exist. One that covers both bases of the formerly mentioned motivations.
A far more likely explanation for the formation of these theories and one that plays a part in the
previously stated reasons, is that many people believe that momentous episodes, by default, demand
momentous origins. Conspiracy theorists seek out or accept explanations that are proportional to
the event in question and believe that significant events need significant causes (Botherton and
French).
This concept provides footing for both of the previously mentioned inciters. Paranoid individuals
would demand a significant cause for a strange event and others, who don t take the government at
its word, will not believe ordinary explanations for extraordinary events. Such observations add
weight to the idea that this is a far more likely explanation for conspiracy theories, as it supports
opposing viewpoints on the same issue, which in turn, provide for it. Conspiracy theories are a
large part of our culture. With technological communication, such ideas

Paul Nieuwenburg Learning To Deliberate Analysis
In Learning to Deliberate: Aristotle on Truthfulness and Public Deliberation , Paul Nieuwenburg
discusses Aristotle s concepts of what guides morality and how the public plays a role in this moral
education (464). Nieuwenburg focuses mainly on the partnership of shame and sincerity while
discussing what happens when a matter becomes public and why that publicity matters. Throughout
his article Nieuwenburg bounces from the mentality of both being the person publicly shamed and
being those who shame that person. He does so by using both his own theories and Artistotle to
explain why it is important for a democracyto continually be in a state of deliberation that is public
and widespread.
To understand why it is of importance for deliberation to be public Nieuwenburg uses ... Show more

Shame is the brace of morality and described by Aristotle are a semivirtue because of the role it
plays in the eventual moral education of the previously mentioned learner (456). Aristotle argues
the role of not only our own shame in our own moral learning but also how others shame impacts
us. He advises not defending those with bad character as to not be seen as a reflection of said
bad character while also stating that this defensiveness of bad traits offends the good character
of the community (457). In a sense by doing away with the bad as opposed to trying to
understand the perspective of what is bad the greater good is better met. But if our fear of
shame is wired to be dictated by public opinion of it then it could be said shame would not exist
without public deliberation which is be perceived as the purpose of Nieuwenburg s article. But if
our fear our shame keeps us from speaking against a social concept sincerity is bound to become
less and less genuine. This loss of sincerity would also be met with shame until the speaker
reaches a balance of being sincere about values the public all agree

The Outsiders Analysis
While most teens do not accomplish much by the end of their high school journey, Susan Eloise
Hinton outranked most teens by publishing her first novel by the age of seventeen. Born in 1950,
in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hinton had always been one for reading. Although, as an article from
Contemporary Literary Criticism Select clarified, Hinton had little to no options of novels to read
for young adults. This helped to inspire her to write her first story in that she would then have
something to read that contrasted from the Mary Jane Goes to the Prom junk, as Hinton had
described many of the popular books for her age. She wrote numerous stories throughout her
writing career, such as The Outsiders, That Was Then, This Is Now, and Rumble Fish, among
others. Many of these novels were later created into film to further spread the phenomenal works of
Hinton. Her story of a gangrivalry quickly became a success. Krischer from the New York Times,
states that since the novel had first been published, over fifteen million copies have been sold. The
Outsiders follows the perspective of a young teen, Ponyboy (Pony) Curtis, as he tells his story of
brotherly love within the gang, as well as recognizing the similarities between the rival gangswithin
the town. Hinton portrays these strong themes through her beautiful characterdevelopment and
intriguing plot that resulted in a timeless classic, The Outsiders. One of the defining features of
Hinton s novel has been her themes presented in the

How Did Humanism Contribute To The Renaissance
The Renaissance era was a time of coming out of the dark , implying that it was a time of
reestablishment. The Humanism theory contributed to the Renaissance period considerably for the
rebirth of education, science, art, literature, music, and a better life for people in general. The
theory of Humanismin the Renaissanceperiod is a concept that arose in the 14th century, Humanism
was established in response to Utilitarian Approach. Utilitarian Approach is a theory known to be
one of the most influential theories before Humanism, classical utilitarianism s two most influential

A Report On My Mortar Platoon
It was a rainy morning in mid October. My mortar platoon was able to do a week s worth of
dismounted patrols tasked with clearing compounds of interest of IED factories, weapons
caches, and drug stockpiles (mainly marijuana). The patrol from the previous day ended with an
hour s worth of small arms and several IEDs. I knew that today would most likely be the same.
At around 0600 we mounted in our MRAPs and Strykers and also picked up the Sappers and
EOD. Before leaving FOB Zangabad we linked up with the ANA that we were doing a joint patrol
with and then left our start point. We drove north on RTE Quebec and made a right onto RTE
Hyena near checkpoint 17, which was an ANA checkpoint. My convoy continued down the road for
another 500 meters... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The rain started to come down extremely heavy so we strong pointed inside a building for
roughly 30 minutes. As soon as we began to step off again one of the ANA shot into the sky
right next to us. We yelled at him and got him to stop but he would not tell us why he did it. The
other ANA began joking and just saying he was an idiot and we started moving again. I
remember jumping a small stream and one of the sappers fell onto his back and was rolling side
to side saying I can t get up ugh . All the ANA were pointing and laughing and so were we. We
were all having a pretty good time up until now, joking around and what not. Continuing on we
are about to leave the compound to walk alongside a mud wall that ran north and south. We turn
south and start walking down and an ANA soldier looks at me and says RPG good and shoots a
random building with his RPG. Baffled we all just keep moving forward and then one explosion
goes off. A few seconds after another. I look out just in front of me and see a potpourri of dirt,
rocks, and body parts with some hitting me in the face. Machine gun fire starts to our 11 o clock
position and more to our 2 o clock. It s about 100 200 meters away. We use the mud wall as quick
cover and start returning fire. We start taking more fire from our 1230 position and I head 4
enemy 100 meters. I started laying down whatever fire I could but ultimately I couldn t see
anyone. Every time I popped my head up a whiz went right by my head. At this point

Teacher and National Development
LITERATURE REVIEW
It is a known fact today that, there is fall, degradation, lost of value in the nation. There is increase
in level of immorality, crime, self centeredness e.t.c which slows down the pace of national
development.
Many people attributed this to our system of education as people say No nation can grow above
the level of her education . This is to bring to light the significant of the correlation between the
three key concepts Education Teacher and National Development .
EDUCATION
Education in its broadest, general sense is the means through which the aims and habits of a group
of people lives on from one generation to the next. Generally, it occurs through any experience that

The division between primary and secondary education is somewhat arbitrary, but it generally
occurs at about eleven or twelve years of age. Some education systems have separate middle
schools, with the transition to the final stage of secondary education taking place at around the age
of fourteen. Schools that provide primary education, are mostly referred to as primary schools.
Primary schools in these countries are often subdivided into infant schools and junior school.
Secondary school
In most contemporary educational systems of the world, secondary education comprises the formal
education that occurs during adolescence. It is characterized by transition from the typically
compulsory, comprehensive primary education for minors, to the optional, selective tertiary, post
secondary , or higher education (e.g. university, vocational school) for adults. Depending on the
system, schools for this period, or a part of it, may be called secondary or high schools,
gymnasiums, lyceums, middle schools, colleges, or vocational schools. The exact meaning of any
of these terms varies from one system to another. The exact boundary between primary and
secondary education also varies from country to country and even within them, but is generally
around the seventh to the tenth year of schooling. Secondary education

Assault On Campuses
Over the past decade, sexual assault on college campuses has been overlooked due to failed
communication from the victims of the attack, which also allowed many schools around the world
to become oblivious to the epidemic. A survey commissioned by the Association of American
Universities brought forth results which were released in September 2015, stating that more than
27.2 % of female college seniors reported having experienced some form of unwanted sexual
contact entering college. The dynamics of college life seems to fuel the problem; many are abused
while they are under the influence of drugs or otherwise incapacitated. Most victims are assaulted
By someone they know. Husbands, former partners, and even friends. Victims of sexual assault
survivors often suffer from a wide range of physical and mental health problems such as PTSD,

Many studies have calculated the economic costs of rape, counting for medical and victim services,
loss of productivity, decreased the quality of life, and law enforcement resources. Each used a
slightly different methodology, but all found the cost to be significant: ranging from 87,000to
240,776 per rape. Arrest rates of sexual assault cases have dropped according to the National
Crime Victimization survey roughly around 12% of the 283,200 annual rape or sexual assault
victimization between 2005 2010 resulted in an arrest at the scene or during a follow up
investigation. Many elements come into play causing little arrests rates, and theses cases can be
demanding to investigate. Still, research shows that some police officers still believe certain rape
myths many women falsely claim rape to get attention which may account for the low rates. Sexual
assault cases can also be difficult to investigate because of the effects of the trauma itself. Victims
of rape and sexual assault often have difficulty remembering the

Atheism And The Existence Of God Essay
The question of who bears the burden of proof frequently comes up in debates between theists and
atheists. In some cases, the theists claim that the atheists bear the burden of proof as it is a self
evident fact that God exists. Whereas some atheists would claim that the theists bear the burden of
proof since they are making supernatural claims. In the following essay I will be discussing both
opinions on this matter, and perhaps show how the burden of proof lies on both of them and neither
of them.
I will begin this discussion by defining the recurring terms during the discussion on the existence of
God. Traditionally the three attitudes one could hold towards the existence of God are theism,
atheism and agnosticism. The belief in the existence of God or Gods, in specific of one that
intervenes in the matters of the universe is defined as theism (Oxford Dictionaries, English,
2016). Atheism as defined in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Spring 2013 Edition)
refers to the negation of theism or in other words, the denial of the existence of God. Agnosticism
is referred to one the maintains that the nothing is known of the belief of God or cannot be known
(Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). A burden of proof is seen as an obligation on a party in a
dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their position (En.wikipedia.org, 2016).
In debates on this subject matter, often times when theists are asked for the basis of their belief in
God, they respond that their

Apprenticeship Skills Analysis
Which key skill would you be the best at doing in an apprenticeship this summer?
I think that I would be the best at is that I work well in teams. I can easily play a part in a big
team because I am really good in some things, but I might need help with other things. In a team,
someone else who is good at the things that I am bad at can do those things while I work really
hard at the specific things that I am good at.
What do you believe would be your first real job in a professional kitchen?
I think that, if I were going to take a job in a kitchen, it would be when I am in college. I would
work in a fast food restaurant and I would be one of the people in charge of making the fries. I do
not think that I am ever going to dive more deeply than that into the food business because It does
not pay very well and I do not enjoy making food. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Symbols and Oppression
In 1927 one of the greatest national disasters in American History occurred, the great Mississippi
flood. Thousands lost their homes, livelihoods, and their lives. The disaster drew worldwide
attention, and created in some an enhanced sense of community. However, despite the hope that the
urgency would change relations between southern blacks and whites that did not occur; in fact,
many feel like violence reached a new high during the disaster. Additionally, the Great flood
disproportionately affected African Americans in the communities, furthering the distrust held by
both races towards each other. In the short story Down by the Riverside, Richard Wright argues...

To many African Americans of the time, whites seemed like a force of nature, something inevitable
that had complete control over what happened to them. There is a moment before Mann is
sentenced to death where he could have spoken his side of the story and he does not: Nigger, do
you know the meaning of this? Mann opened his mouth, but no words came Do you know this
means your life (Wright 161). In this moment Mann knows that nothing he can say will change his
fate, instead he silently accepts that. Like the currents in the rushing water nothing can change
them. In fact, racism is as powerful and unpredictable and as much to be feared as the violence of
nature itself, and the authors juxtaposing of the two forces is a means of illustrating social evil
by measuring it against the more familiar concept of natural danger (Howard 47). The violence
of nature is a force that cannot be changed, weather will occur not matter how much society
would rather it not. Racism on the other hand is something that people can control, the idea that
it had just as large of an effect on the blacks displaced by the great flood as the flood itself;
speaks volumes of the amount of racism that occurred in the 1920s. It is understandable that many
blacks would feel like whites were a force that could be controlled as well as

Listeria is a genus of small, facultative anaerobic, Gram positive motile bacilli which infect many
types of animals and contaminates numerous foods, including vegetables, milk, chicken and beef.
The most important species of the genus, Listeria monocytogenes, is an important cause of
foodborne illness which disproportionately affects pregnant women and their newborns. Due to its
high mortality rate, ongoing efforts are needed to further reduce the incidence of listeriosis.
Proper storage and handling of refrigerated ready to eat foods can help reduce the risk of

The differences of approval is completely evident in the way that their aunt, Baby Kochamma ,
pressures both Estha and Rahel into recitations of prayer and English songs to please Sophie Mol
(Roy, 83) . With the artistic style of the passage on page 33, Roy uses simile, wordchoice, and

how their lives had changed. That the hell in which they were to live in would become preserved,
and would be accounted for, because Estha and Rahel s family would make sure of it. In the second
paragraph, Roy uses the sentence fragment, Little events, ordinary things, smashed and

things would amount to such huger problems in the end. That those small events would become a

Thesis: Vasudeva, Young Siddartha, and Govinda all help Siddartha achieve enlightenment because
they taught him the Four Noble Truths.
Vasudeva, the Ferryman, taught Siddartha about the Fourth Noble Truth, the eightfold path.
Though Vasudeva does not directly teach each individual aspect of the eightfold path, it can be
argued that since the eightfold path is visualized as a wheel Vasudeva teachings are all connected
to each aspect. An important characteristic of Vasudeva is that he is a listener, he rarely talks. His

The Chemical Ingredient Of Acetylsalicylic Acid Essay
Acetylsalicylic acid is the active pharmaceutical ingredient that is found in aspirin and is used to
treat inflammation, pain and fever. It is created by an esterification reaction of salicylic acid with
acetic anhydride in the presence of an acid catalyst. At the end of the reaction, a product and
unreacted salicylic acidand acid catalyst was created. The product contains impurities, such as acetic
anhydrideand salicylic acid, which needs to be removed. Crystallization, a technique used to
purify substances, produces crystals and the impurities get filtered under the vacuum. Adding
water after the crystals are made but before the crystals are vacuumed helps to purify the crystals
and get rid of some impurities. Melting the crystals can determine the purity of the product that
was made. When performing the experiment, salicylic acid will be in a flask and in a water bath.
It is important that it sits in the water bath for at least eight minutes but no more than ten
minutes. If it is in the water bath for more than ten minutes, the salicylic acid could decompose.
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the presence of salicylic acid and starch in
acetylsalicylic acid. The presence of salicylic acid can be determined by performing a ferric
chloride test. The presence of starch can be determined by performing an iodine test. In order to
find the percent yield, the following formula was used:
Percent yield= (Mass of product obtained experimentally)/(mass of product

Rhetorical Analysis of Colin Fletcher s The Man Who Walked...
The story, The Man Who Walked through Time, by Colin Fletcher, is depicting a situation where
he takes over the role of a non existent Indian. Fletcher is trying to experience things the same way
the Indian man used to. Fletcher lets the audience see this by using rhetorical devices such as word
choice, tone, and descriptive examples. In Fletcher s style of writing he sometimes makes the
reader think that he is actually experiences some of the same things that the Indian experienced.
Fletcher, at first makes the reader believe that he actually lives in the dwelling. Choosing such
sentences as, I climbed back to my pink apartment house, unpacked, and settled in, (Fletcher 81,
2000), this helps the reader to understand that this is no ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cubical showed every sign of having been built for a man just about my size, (p 81). Again
Fletcher is assuming that the cubical was built for a man of his size. I dwelt in my cliff dwelling
for twenty four hours. And, hour by hour conscious of my vast ignorance, yet curiously confident I
began to focus on my cave dweller more sharply, (p 82). In this sentence Fletcher reassures the
reader that the man knows he s not really experiencing anything with the Indian. We know this
because he tells the audience that he is aware of his own ignorance. By choosing those words,
Fletcher lets the reader know that the man is imagining being with the Indian.
Fletcher has an expository tone. Throughout the essay Fletcher tries to explain to the audience
what it must have been like to live like an Indian. There are very few factual statements in this
writing. Fletcher makes many assumptions and gives his opinion to try to explain to the reader
what it must have been like to live in a cliff dwelling. By only assuming he does a pretty good job
of making the reader believe.
The descriptive examples that Fletcher uses really let s the audience picture it. Throughout the
writing when the man speaks of events, he explains in great detail. first I pictured him building his
home. I saw him chipping patiently away at the roof of the cave, so that there would be headroom
when he sat up in his cubical, (Fletcher 82).

Reverend Hale Beliefs
The Changing Of Moral Beliefs
Arthur Miller has his own ideas of tragic hero and he says that a tragic hero is someone who
stands up to there own person dignity and has a flaw (Miller 1). Truth is when someone does not
lie and only says what is true. In reality truth can cause problems with people in a society. Identity
is who someone is there qualities and beliefs. In the real world many people change who they are
for others. The important thing is to only change for ourselves and not for others. Our identity is
who we are and we have the power to change our own beliefs for ourselves only. The character
Reverend Hale is symbolized as a tragic hero in order to preserve his integrity by changing his
identity and being truthful because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reverend Hale was a priest so he was all about honesty and did not want anyone to lie. Hale once
said, cleave to no faith when faith brings blood (Miller 132). In this quote Reverend Hale warns
Elizabeth and tells her that she should not lie because that is bad and it could lead to death. This
connects to Reverend Hale as a tragic hero because he changed his beliefs as he left the court
and left Salem. Then Reverend Hale returned to Salem because he wanted to help save the rest
of the people of Salem since he was not there to directly help John Proctor. Hale went from being
someone all about honesty to basically a liar. The only way to help save the people of Salem
would be to tell them to lie. Reverend Hale was only able to do this because he left the court. If
he was still part of the court he would have to follow what they do and he would not have a voice
or a say. When it came to John Proctor s trial, he decided to tell the truthbut that unfortunately did
not work out for him. This is because they sent Elizabeth into the court and asked he the same
question they asked John Proctor, however, Elizabeth lied for her husband. Because he did not
say the same thing as John Proctor he would most likely be killed for this. When this was
happening, Reverend Hale was still part of the court so he did not have say about what would
happen to John Proctor. This is one of the reasons why Reverend Hale

Joint Infringement Defense Paper
Federal Circuit Upholds Joint Infringement Defense Recently, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the
Federal Circuit announced its 2 1 decision in Akamai Techs., Inc. v. Limelight Networks, Inc.,
upholding the joint infringement defense under which a patent cannot be infringed upon if the
infringement relies on two or more parties acting independently. A June 2014 ruling by the U.S.
Supreme Court in Limelight Networks v. Akamai reversed a 2012 decision by the Federal Circuit
that had held Limelight liable for infringing an Akamai patent that covered methods for storing and
delivering large files via the Internet. In defending the suit, Akamai alleged that Limelight had

The Supreme Court struck down this concept of divided infringement, saying that for infringement
to apply, all the steps must be performed by a single entity or entities joined together via contract or
other arrangements. Applying the June 2014 Supreme Court decision, the Federal Circuit found
that Limelight did not control or direct the actions of its clients. Although a contract existed
between Limelight and its clients, the contract did not require clients to perform certain steps that
Limelight did not itself perform. Consequently, Limelight committed no direct infringement and
therefore, there was no indirect infringement. The Akamai case has potential wide ranging
implications in patent litigation and transactional law pertaining to joint technology ventures. The
case has been litigated since 2006. Following this latest Federal Circuit decision, Akamai
announced that it would seek a Federal Circuit en banc review of the most recent ruling and, if
necessary, take the joint infringement issue to the U.S. Supreme

Low Voter Turnout Essay
As the decline in voter turnout affects Canada and most western democracies, there is an
increasing urgency to find a solution to this trend. This paper will evaluate whether civic education
is indeed a solution to the trend, in hopes of re engaging citizens. I would argue that civic
education is a crucial measure to be taken in order to inform and mobilize voters. It is said, without
question, that a politically savvy population is more inclined to engage in political participation.
However, believing that civic education alone is the silver bullet solution to declining voter turnout
is overly optimistic.
Why is low voter turnout a concern? Simply put, non participatory citizens are disengaged from an
important aspect of political life. One s decision to to participate can be linked to several issues.
The concern facing the pattern of disengagement is that it lowers our collective ... Show more

However, the reality one faces when observing the outcome of such an initiative proves that it is
not so cut and dry. Civic education in Canada has been met with a number of challenges. One
primary issue is the lack of parity. As stated in Canada s Constitution Act of 1867, there is no
federal department of education and no integrated national system of education. Therefore, in each
province, the legislature makes education laws exclusively. They are therefore responsible for the
organization, delivery and assessment of education at the elementary, secondary and even
postsecondary level. Moreover, it is difficult to immediately assess the impact of civic education on
voter turnout. This is mainly because the majority of students who take civic education are not yet
of voting age. Therefore, the benefits of civic education can only be evaluated objectively at a later

How Did Dmitri Mendeleev Show Honor
Honor means to hold with high respect or esteem. My view of honor is to give respect to those
who deserve it. Dmitri Mendeleev, the creator of the first periodic table, is one of those who
deserve the respect honor has to offer. Dmitri Mendeleev was born February 8, 1834. When he
was young, his father went blind and couldn t work. Since his father couldn t work, his mother
re opened the glass factory that his father owned. When he was 13, his father died. Then, the
glass factory burned down when he was 15. Mendeleev had trained as both an academic chemist
and a teacher at his father s old college, partly because the college had known his father. He
suffered from Tuberculosis at 20 and had to work mostly from his bed. When he graduated, he...

It made finding the elements easier and it was able to be altered for the better of the science
community. His table was able to accurately predict the missing elements in his chart. Mendeleev
was very successful in his scientific career after he created the periodic table and is most famous
for that discovery. Mendeleev s periodic table had some flaws, but he used his periodic table to:
Propose that some of the elements, whose behavior did not agree with his predictions, must
have had their atomic weights measured incorrectly. Predict the existence of eight new
elements. Mendeleev even predicted the properties these elements would have. Later it was
found that Dmitri did measure some atomic properties incorrectly. Dmitri Mendeleev s
discovery of the periodic table fulfilled the criteria for honor worthy. His discovery is honor
worthy because the science world would be having a hard time today if it wasn t for his work in
chemistry. All in all, Dmitri Mendeleev is honor worthy because he made the science world more
organized and was unbiased while doing so. Works Cited Dmitri Mendeleev Biography, Facts and

Relationship Between Parents And Parents Spend More Time...
Simple causal relationship tells of the varied effects to society when parents spend more time with
their children. Again, the report by Gerard Clark from New Zealand puts into words some of these
effects. He pointed out how secure attachment formed in the early months, between parent and
child, is a predictor of resilience in later life . He also pointed to how many adolescent issues like
crime, drug abuse, and mental health have their roots in early childhood.
In an article for The Washington Post, author Jane Waldfogel pointed us to a study in Norway
linking the reduction in high school dropout rate to the country s generous parental leave statute.
This lower dropout rate, they claimed, is because of parental involvement in the early months of the
child s life, a very crucial stage when fathers connect with their children and form the foundations of
future relationship; when mothers get to provide the nourishment that their baby needs through
breastfeeding and the emotional connection this practice forms. Again, a properly designed parental
leave can encourage mothers to nurse their babies, a practice that apparently not only helps make
healthy babies now but also well rounded adults later (n. pag.).
Perhaps another reason more involved parents discourage children from dropping out of school is
the amount of support and guidance they are able to relay to their children. This perceived interest
from parents encourages children to achieve more to make their parents proud.

Electronic Mediated Communication In Relationships
Using electronic mediated communication, such as text messages can be a great way to
communicate. However, when beginning a relationship, face to face contact can be the most
intimate way to get to know each other. When a person pours their all (everything about them
including life events) in a text message, one cannot be taken serious. You have to find common
ground. For many people, texting is a major source of relationship communication. People age 17 to
25 tend to text their romantic interests more than older individuals do, (Coyne, Stockdale, Busby,

When you like someone, you make plans to meet, have dinner, or meet for coffee. The simple fact
that he refuses or avoid this could mean he is not disclosing something, such as another
relationship. He does not necessarily have to disclose everything about himself because your
interaction is just text message. How can you tell he likes you when you have never seen him smile
at you? Or wink at you? Or even kissed you? Self disclosure increases the needs to reduce any
uncertainties in a relationship. In your case, you are not in a relationship, not even in a situation
however, the lack thereof should determine whether you should continue pursuing your work crush

other party in order to reduce their uncertainty. In gaining this information people are able to predict
the other s behavior and resulting actions, all of which according to the theory is crucial in the
development of any relationship, (Berger Calabrese, 1975). Your letter has indicated you have made

My Writing By Nancy Sommers
Over the course of first semester in college I have learned how to read, write, and learn again.
That sentence may be hard to understand, since when getting to college you are already supposed
to know how, but it is true. Starting off with I Stand Here Writing by Nancy Sommers, I have
learned how to enhance my writing by using personal sources to combine personal and academic
writing. With the help of The Mindat Work by Mike Rose I got an example of how the teachings of
Sommers can be applied in writing. We ended the semester off with learninghow to read again. In
James Gee book Semiotic Domains: Is Playing Video Games a Waste of Time ? I got another
look at how to view literacy, which I was not aware that there was another way to look at.
Literacy should not be the ability to read and write but thought of as a semiotic domain. All that is
saying is that from what is written, categorizing the text to certain domain and producing and
adding meaning adds depth to what is written while we also get a better understanding as well.
Overall I have a gained an alternative perspective on learning and when experiencing new things,
changing your mindset will lead you to success in that domain. Learning is a hard thing to do in
some cases. It is never just an instructor teaching you that particular topic and learning it
automatically. Over time I realize there are quirks to think about when learning specific subjects.
For example in The Mind at Work, instead of finding research the

Missing Child Actuarial Approach
When investigating a missing child, a criminal investigative analyst can approach the case using
either a clinical approach, an actuarial approach, or both. The circumstances regarding the child
and how the child became missing will determine the best approach to use for locating the child in
question. A clinical approach would use insights from an investigator s understanding of psychiatry
and clinical psychology to aid the investigation (Bartol Bartol, 2010) of the missing child. This
would include a clinical assessment of the victim or potential offender and whether either of them
have any predisposed mental illnesses or other psychological abnormality (Turvey, 2012). An

If there are other children in the area reported missing, then begin to gather information from
those cases. I would gather data regarding proximity of where the other children went missing to
where this current child is missing from. Gathering data of children that went missing in route to
school within the area or neighboring areas would be important. Per Bartol Bartol (2010), the
actuarial method is based largely on evidence obtained from the scene, for this case evidence
would be obtained from the home specifically the missing child s room. Further, evidence could
be obtained on the route the missing child walks to get to school each day since she was
supposed to be heading for school. I would begin to review case files for children that may have
been missing and found in recent years. Quinsey, et al. (2006), indicates this would help to
ascertain if this is an ongoing issue in an area as well as allow a profiler to gather information on
potential offenders that could have committed similar crimes. Information gathered would be
placed into categories by specific characteristics, the data gathered on missing children that have
been found in recent years would be separated from any cases of missing children that are
unsolved. Characteristics of offenders in the solved cases would be separated into categories as

The Polygraph
A lie detector test is commonly called a polygraph. They are used to record a subjects natural
reactions, such as an increase in heart rate, to questions. The polygraph tracks and records these
factors using multiple smaller devices. It has been built and developed since 1878 (CГґtГ©,
Michel, Sergeant). The polygraphhas its advantages and disadvantages, some people even claim it
can be tricked. The United States uses them, but scientist are still uncertain of their accuracy. Many
other countries do not use them out of concern for accuracy. In recent years, their use has decreased
due to the uncertainty. Polygraphs have always been, and might always be, controversial.

A lot of things about them have their ow positives ad negatives to them. It seems to be most
successful in getting guilty subjects to confess out of fear. Others countries, such as Europe,
have deemed the polygraph as far too unreliable for any evidence to be used in court. ( Palmer,
Alun.) Part of why they are unreliable traces back to the fact that people fear them. This is an
advantage and a disadvantage. It has been considered an advantage because guilty subjects likely
to confess out of fear for the test. At the same time, an innocent subject could fail the test out of
fear. Polygraph tests, in a way, detect nervousness. This can lead to false results. (Robinson, Bryan.)
Another disadvantage already mentioned earlier is that businesses, companies, and corporations

Smoke Signals
In Amanda J. Cobb s article titled This is What It Means to Say Smoke Signals, the author
elucidates the significance of this film by showcasing the uniqueness of its story, creators, and
contemporary representation of Native Americans in Hollywood film. Cobb brings to light the idea
that this film was not only the first filmto be written and directed by Native artists, but that it was
the first to exercise the idea of self definition and cultural sovereignty (207). The paper goes on to

As the segment put it, the movie is a classic Hollywood roadtrip/buddy cinema that uses humor
to tell a story of loss and redemption about the two main protagonists, Thomas Builds the Fire
and Victor Joseph (208). The author goes on to more clearly contend the singularity of the film
in comparison to other films such as Powwow Highway in the sense that Smoke Signals did not
center around an Indian and white conflict, but instead it focused on Victor s internal struggles
with his father (210). This, combined with the fact that Native Americans were not only in the
film, but also a part of the outside, introduced the reasons why the film had a unparalleled plot
and a set of different standards to meet in comparison to past films. As Cobb put it, the film had
to find a balance in creating a film that had an implicit political goal, while also being a relaxing
American and Native cinema that appease both audiences and was able to achieve some
commercial value. According to the writer, the film was able to achieve this in the comedic
conversations between Victor and Thomas, highlighting a famous scene of a bus that challenges the
stereotypical images of the Indian warrior and medicine man (214). The film wasn t all breaking of

comfortable at all to rest in (Life in a Medieval Castle). They are described as gloomy, wet
places. The fireplaces filled the rooms with smoke, the only lights used were from lights that

There are some misconceptions with ADA and most people believe that ADA has become a
history on the day it was signed on July 26, 1990 which it was not the case. It started by the people

  • 2. The Long Term Effects Of Social Disadvantage Essay to help industry and commerce make the most of its human resources. However, psychological test data can also confront us with problems which are difficult to handle. Many of the controversies which surround test use reflect existing problems in society. For example, differences in test scores between blacks and whites in the United States are generally considered to be a reflection of the long term effects of social disadvantage. Research shows that these differences in test scores are not due to bias in the tests. They are real, and are predictive of real social outcomes, to differences in academic attainment, differences in job performance, and so on. Given the potential power of psychological tests as a tool, it is vital that they are used carefully and appropriately. Use of tests should always be under the supervision of a competent psychologist, or other suitably qualified, accredited person, and should always be carried out with due regard for local cultural factors and for professional and ethical codes of practice. In the United Kingdom, a national system of certification of test user competencies is now in place which is based on standards for test use. In most countries, the national psychological association can provide information and guidance covering the supply and use of tests, and standards for test construction. Across countries, the International Test Commission liaises between national psychological associations and provides guidance on technical issues ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Significance Of The Soweto Uprising The Soweto Uprising was one of the worst events in the history of education with a lot of young casualties/ deaths, all this to make a point/ let people see what is wrong in the education system. Did this event change education in South Africa? The event of the Soweto Uprising was on the day of June 16th 1976/ June 16th 1976, students from the township of Soweto gathered in front of their school. The original plan was for student from all over Soweto to have a march to the Department of Bantu Education, and deliver a message about their complaint. They complained about the fact that Afrikaans would be the medium of instructions in all the schools. Learners could not understand the subjects and this created an issue. Police then got the order to shoot and kill the protesting students. Seven hundred students died that day and the 13 year old Hector Peterson was the symbol of the uprising. The uprising changed education and is still in affect after all ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this decade a new sense of resistance had been brewing . Black students, led by Steve Biko, formed the South African Student s Organization (SASO). A lot of events led to the Uprising: The school children were influenced by the Black Consciousness Movement in the 1970 s; and workers strikes in Durban in 1975; liberation of neighbouring Angola and Mozambique in 1975. (Soweto Student Uprising, n.d.) Though the children was influenced by the Black Consciousness Movement, they do not remember any influence from outside organizations that changed their decision to protest the use of Afrikaans. Or could there be real evidence and substance to validate the claims of conspiracy theorists? Perhaps just old, everyday distrust in the governing powers of the land? However, there is one central idea that could be the foundation for all the different views on the relevant events that inspire such widespread intrigue. This single, overarching idea is that major and significant events demand marked and specific causes for the aforementioned occurrences. One of the more common explanations for belief in conspiracy theories, is that the supporters adhere to the speculations because they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of course, this doesn t validate any and every conspiracy ever garnered, but it does raise some questions as to the validity of government statements and news reports. But an even more meaningful origin may yet exist. One that covers both bases of the formerly mentioned motivations. A far more likely explanation for the formation of these theories and one that plays a part in the previously stated reasons, is that many people believe that momentous episodes, by default, demand momentous origins. Conspiracy theorists seek out or accept explanations that are proportional to the event in question and believe that significant events need significant causes (Botherton and French). This concept provides footing for both of the previously mentioned inciters. Paranoid individuals would demand a significant cause for a strange event and others, who don t take the government at its word, will not believe ordinary explanations for extraordinary events. Such observations add weight to the idea that this is a far more likely explanation for conspiracy theories, as it supports opposing viewpoints on the same issue, which in turn, provide for it. Conspiracy theories are a large part of our culture. With technological communication, such ideas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Paul Nieuwenburg Learning To Deliberate Analysis In Learning to Deliberate: Aristotle on Truthfulness and Public Deliberation , Paul Nieuwenburg discusses Aristotle s concepts of what guides morality and how the public plays a role in this moral education (464). Nieuwenburg focuses mainly on the partnership of shame and sincerity while discussing what happens when a matter becomes public and why that publicity matters. Throughout his article Nieuwenburg bounces from the mentality of both being the person publicly shamed and being those who shame that person. He advises not defending those with bad character as to not be seen as a reflection of said bad character while also stating that this defensiveness of bad traits offends the good character of the community (457). • 6. The Outsiders Analysis While most teens do not accomplish much by the end of their high school journey, Susan Eloise Hinton outranked most teens by publishing her first novel by the age of seventeen. Born in 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hinton had always been one for reading. Although, as an article from Contemporary Literary Criticism Select clarified, Hinton had little to no options of novels to read for young adults. This helped to inspire her to write her first story in that she would then have something to read that contrasted from the Mary Jane Goes to the Prom junk, as Hinton had described many of the popular books for her age. She wrote numerous stories throughout her writing career, such as The Outsiders, That Was Then, This Is Now, and Rumble Fish, among others. Many of these novels were later created into film to further spread the phenomenal works of Hinton. Her story of a gangrivalry quickly became a success. Krischer from the New York Times, states that since the novel had first been published, over fifteen million copies have been sold. The Outsiders follows the perspective of a young teen, Ponyboy (Pony) Curtis, as he tells his story of brotherly love within the gang, as well as recognizing the similarities between the rival gangswithin the town. Hinton portrays these strong themes through her beautiful characterdevelopment and intriguing plot that resulted in a timeless classic, The Outsiders. • 11. Atheism And The Existence Of God Essay The question of who bears the burden of proof frequently comes up in debates between theists and atheists. In some cases, the theists claim that the atheists bear the burden of proof as it is a self evident fact that God exists. Whereas some atheists would claim that the theists bear the burden of proof since they are making supernatural claims. In the following essay I will be discussing both opinions on this matter, and perhaps show how the burden of proof lies on both of them and neither of them. I will begin this discussion by defining the recurring terms during the discussion on the existence of God. Traditionally the three attitudes one could hold towards the existence of God are theism, atheism and agnosticism. The belief in the existence of God or Gods, in specific of one that intervenes in the matters of the universe is defined as theism (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). Atheism as defined in the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy (Spring 2013 Edition) refers to the negation of theism or in other words, the denial of the existence of God. Agnosticism is referred to one the maintains that the nothing is known of the belief of God or cannot be known (Oxford Dictionaries, English, 2016). A burden of proof is seen as an obligation on a party in a dispute to provide sufficient warrant for their position (En.wikipedia.org, 2016). Mann opened his mouth, but no words came Do you know this means your life (Wright 161). In this moment Mann knows that nothing he can say will change his fate, instead he silently accepts that. It is created by an esterification reaction of salicylic acid with acetic anhydride in the presence of an acid catalyst. At the end of the reaction, a product and unreacted salicylic acidand acid catalyst was created. The product contains impurities, such as acetic anhydrideand salicylic acid, which needs to be removed. Crystallization, a technique used to purify substances, produces crystals and the impurities get filtered under the vacuum. Adding water after the crystals are made but before the crystals are vacuumed helps to purify the crystals and get rid of some impurities. Melting the crystals can determine the purity of the product that was made. When performing the experiment, salicylic acid will be in a flask and in a water bath. It is important that it sits in the water bath for at least eight minutes but no more than ten minutes. If it is in the water bath for more than ten minutes, the salicylic acid could decompose. Let s go, Kwan declared as he begun taking the stairs. Boys, can I a moment with you, a determined Giselle spoke. Giselle s profile came visible from the shadows of the hallway. Tim noticed Giselle s eyeliner was smudged. Giselle never looked out of place. Did she cry? Where was Daniel? Had Daniel upset Giselle? It s kind of boring here, so Tim and I are heading out, Kwan said. Tim was startled with Kwan s assertiveness as he looked to Kwan. Without warning, the three of them heard a quarrel below them. They recognized Ms Loren and Coach Russell s voices overlapping. The three begun downward and at the midway landing, they saw Cara and Bryan with the other students behind their chaperones. It was an heated exchange. Giselle observed two rifle carrying men blocking the group s exit from the Grand Foyer. There was Ms. Loren, in her matronly manner readjusting her glasses, while Coach Russell trying to resolve the situation. They continued. Giselle reached the last step, she asked, What s the problem? Ms Loren said, These gentlemen here are asking us to pay an admission fee before we can leave the Palace. I think they are bandits. Someone tell me how much do they want? Bryan declared. • 29. Low Voter Turnout Essay As the decline in voter turnout affects Canada and most western democracies, there is an increasing urgency to find a solution to this trend. This paper will evaluate whether civic education is indeed a solution to the trend, in hopes of re engaging citizens. I would argue that civic education is a crucial measure to be taken in order to inform and mobilize voters. It is said, without question, that a politically savvy population is more inclined to engage in political participation. However, believing that civic education alone is the silver bullet solution to declining voter turnout is overly optimistic. Why is low voter turnout a concern? Simply put, non participatory citizens are disengaged from an important aspect of political life. One s decision to to participate can be linked to several issues. The concern facing the pattern of disengagement is that it lowers our collective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the reality one faces when observing the outcome of such an initiative proves that it is not so cut and dry. Civic education in Canada has been met with a number of challenges. One primary issue is the lack of parity. As stated in Canada s Constitution Act of 1867, there is no federal department of education and no integrated national system of education. Therefore, in each province, the legislature makes education laws exclusively. They are therefore responsible for the organization, delivery and assessment of education at the elementary, secondary and even postsecondary level. Moreover, it is difficult to immediately assess the impact of civic education on voter turnout. This is mainly because the majority of students who take civic education are not yet of voting age. Therefore, the benefits of civic education can only be evaluated objectively at a later ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dmitri Mendeleev, the creator of the first periodic table, is one of those who deserve the respect honor has to offer. Dmitri Mendeleev was born February 8, 1834. When he was young, his father went blind and couldn t work. Since his father couldn t work, his mother re opened the glass factory that his father owned. When he was 13, his father died. Then, the glass factory burned down when he was 15. Mendeleev had trained as both an academic chemist and a teacher at his father s old college, partly because the college had known his father. Mendeleev s periodic table had some flaws, but he used his periodic table to: Propose that some of the elements, whose behavior did not agree with his predictions, must have had their atomic weights measured incorrectly. Predict the existence of eight new elements. Mendeleev even predicted the properties these elements would have. Later it was found that Dmitri did measure some atomic properties incorrectly. • 31. Relationship Between Parents And Parents Spend More Time... Simple causal relationship tells of the varied effects to society when parents spend more time with their children. Again, the report by Gerard Clark from New Zealand puts into words some of these effects. He pointed out how secure attachment formed in the early months, between parent and child, is a predictor of resilience in later life . He also pointed to how many adolescent issues like crime, drug abuse, and mental health have their roots in early childhood. In an article for The Washington Post, author Jane Waldfogel pointed us to a study in Norway linking the reduction in high school dropout rate to the country s generous parental leave statute. This lower dropout rate, they claimed, is because of parental involvement in the early months of the child s life, a very crucial stage when fathers connect with their children and form the foundations of future relationship; when mothers get to provide the nourishment that their baby needs through breastfeeding and the emotional connection this practice forms. Again, a properly designed parental leave can encourage mothers to nurse their babies, a practice that apparently not only helps make healthy babies now but also well rounded adults later (n. pag.). Perhaps another reason more involved parents discourage children from dropping out of school is the amount of support and guidance they are able to relay to their children. This perceived interest from parents encourages children to achieve more to make their parents proud. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, when beginning a relationship, face to face contact can be the most intimate way to get to know each other. For many people, texting is a major source of relationship communication. People age 17 to 25 tend to text their romantic interests more than older individuals do, (Coyne, Stockdale, Busby, Iverson, Grant, 2011). That sentence may be hard to understand, since when getting to college you are already supposed to know how, but it is true. Starting off with I Stand Here Writing by Nancy Sommers, I have learned how to enhance my writing by using personal sources to combine personal and academic writing. With the help of The Mindat Work by Mike Rose I got an example of how the teachings of Sommers can be applied in writing. We ended the semester off with learninghow to read again. In James Gee book Semiotic Domains: Is Playing Video Games a Waste of Time ? I got another look at how to view literacy, which I was not aware that there was another way to look at. Literacy should not be the ability to read and write but thought of as a semiotic domain. All that is saying is that from what is written, categorizing the text to certain domain and producing and adding meaning adds depth to what is written while we also get a better understanding as well. Overall I have a gained an alternative perspective on learning and when experiencing new things, changing your mindset will lead you to success in that domain. The circumstances regarding the child and how the child became missing will determine the best approach to use for locating the child in question. A clinical approach would use insights from an investigator s understanding of psychiatry and clinical psychology to aid the investigation (Bartol Bartol, 2010) of the missing child. This would include a clinical assessment of the victim or potential offender and whether either of them have any predisposed mental illnesses or other psychological abnormality (Turvey, 2012). I would gather data regarding proximity of where the other children went missing to where this current child is missing from. Gathering data of children that went missing in route to school within the area or neighboring areas would be important. Per Bartol Bartol (2010), the actuarial method is based largely on evidence obtained from the scene, for this case evidence would be obtained from the home specifically the missing child s room. Further, evidence could be obtained on the route the missing child walks to get to school each day since she was supposed to be heading for school. I would begin to review case files for children that may have been missing and found in recent years. Quinsey, et al. (2006), indicates this would help to ascertain if this is an ongoing issue in an area as well as allow a profiler to gather information on potential offenders that could have committed similar crimes. The author goes on to more clearly contend the singularity of the film in comparison to other films such as Powwow Highway in the sense that Smoke Signals did not center around an Indian and white conflict, but instead it focused on Victor s internal struggles with his father (210). This, combined with the fact that Native Americans were not only in the film, but also a part of the outside, introduced the reasons why the film had a unparalleled plot and a set of different standards to meet in comparison to past films. As Cobb put it, the film had to find a balance in creating a film that had an implicit political goal, while also being a relaxing American and Native cinema that appease both audiences and was able to achieve some commercial value. According to the writer, the film was able to achieve this in the comedic conversations between Victor and Thomas, highlighting a famous scene of a bus that challenges the stereotypical images of the Indian warrior and medicine man (214).
