The secession of the Confederate states can be attributed to the collapse of a longstanding system of
political compromise. The factors responsible for this collapse were not only economic and political in
nature but also societal. The beginning of the sectional crisis can be attributed to the Market
Revolution and reform movements of the early 19th century. These cultural and economic changes
subsequently influenced American politics, as evidenced by landmark events such as the Compromise
of 1850, the acquisition of Mexican territory in 1858, the Wilmot Proviso, and finally the election of
1860. All of these events can be tied to changes in cultural attitudes throughout the North and South,

With the acquisition of Mexican Territory in 1848, the question of slavery entered the American
political spotlight in a way that had been avoided since the Missouri Compromise. This new territory
threatened the precarious balance of political power between Northern free states and Southern
slaveholding states. Finding a solution to this problem placed great stress on preexisting sectional
tensions. One proposal that was widely supported in the North was the Wilmot Proviso, which called
for the total halt of the expansion of slavery. This meant that no new slaveholding states could be
admitted to the Union, tipping the balance of power in favor of the North, which the South was
vehemently opposed to. Although the Proviso was not adopted it resulted in a total breakdown of the
party system along sectional lines and was indicative of an increasing unwillingness on both sides for
the political compromise that had one been the norm as exemplified by the Missouri Compromise.
Northern opposition to the Fugitive Slave Act, which was introduced by the Compromise of 1850, is
further evidence of this growing animosity between the two main factions of American society.
Southerners saw Northern refusal to comply with the Fugitive Slave Act as an affront to their

The gay community and women s liberation movement were both formed through collective identities
and political/oppositional consciousness. Moreover, both groups were discriminated against by
external social structures and yet, succeeded due to internal factors. Whittier and Taylor describe
collective identity as the shared definition of a group that derives from member s common interests,
experiences, and solidarity (Whittier 105). The gay community was being oppressed for their sexuality
while women were being suppressed based on their gender. Although both communities formed
collective identities, they experienced numerous obstacles in unifying their movements, the most
notable being race and ethnicity. Since both groups were being discriminated against due to factors out
of their control, they formed collective identities and created communities, which propelled their
movements forward.
The shift from agricultural economy to capitalism changed family dynamics, and was directly linked
