Undertaking Poem Annotated
The poem, Undertaking describes the loss of a women s husband. The wife cleans and treats her
loved one s body as if it is still alive. But she realizes the death, until his body is taken away and
not treated with the love she gave him. Even though her husband has passed away, the speaker
seems to still have a relationship with him through the description of her delicate treatment
towards him. The relationship between the wife and husband is still alive. Through the
description of the poem we see that the wife does not see her husband as a dead body. She treats
her husband s body as something alive that feels every touch. In the middle of the first stanza,
phrases like, She took her time , She washed each finger , and Cleaning underneath

Patriot Act Essays
Patriot Act
We re dealing with terrorists who operate by highly sophisticated methods and technologies, some
of which were not even available when our existing laws were written. The bill before me accounts
for the new realities and dangers posed by modern terrorists. It will help law enforcement to
identify, dismantle, disrupt, and punish terrorists before they strike, (President George W. Bush at
signing of Patriot Act, 2001). The terrorists of today cannot be reasoned with. We must do whatever
necessary to ensure that there never will be another September 11th. Since the enactment of the
Patriot Act, there have not been any major acts of terrorism committed on U.S. soil. If the Act had

By establishing these bills, we will save this nation from another September 11th. If we fail to act
upon our threats, we will be no different from other oppressed nations. Chief Justice Robert Jackson
says, The Constitution is not a suicide pact. Failing to take strong measures to defend our nation
against future attacks would amount to suicide. The U.S.A. Patriot Act is an important part of the
nation s efforts to fight back to defend freedom and liberty.
The ACLU has also influenced Congress to limit the sharing of information obtained through wire
tapping. The Act has removed major barriers between communications of law enforcement,
intelligence and national defense communities from talking and coordinating their work, to
protecting the American people and national security. Senator John Edwards (D NC) said about
the Patriot Act, We cannot prevail in the battle against terrorism if the right hand of our
government has no idea what the left hand is doing. One example of the progress of this law
was when a federal grand jury just recently had indicted an individual in Florida, Sami al Arian,
for allegedly being the U.S. leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the world s most violent
terrorist outfits. Palestinian Islamic Jihad is responsible for the murder of over 100 innocent

Black Men And Public Space By Gloria Naylor
Over the course of history, racial identity was the only thing that could set a person apart from one
another. This has been proved not only in history but in society and people have to live with it in
constant terms. While reading the story of
Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples and Mommy, What Does Nigger
Mean? by Gloria Naylor, it became clear that people of color suffer from this ignorant mindset of
others. It got to a point in which people of color did not know how to react or even look, while
walking down the street, such as Staples.
Other commonalities perceive people of color had faced were attaching the word
Nigger to people of color, or mistaken a Black male as a criminal. All of these examples fall into the
category of ignorance and racist stereotype.
Something like this should not be tolerated, because it s implying more ignorance and racism.
Ignorance creates chaos, and because of a different kind of actions that involved ignorance, chaos
emerge from each of the actions.
Three major themes that surround the experience of Staples and Naylor are racist stereotypes,
ignorant behavior, and inequality of culture.
Staple s states the way racial identity affected his life, from being seeing as a threating to being
confused for a criminal. Unfortunately, this has become a sad/true fact in Staple s life, in his
story Staples implies My first victim was a women white, well dressed probably in her early
twenties (188). The author was doing a social

Firm s Failure Wall Lets Workers Learn From Their Mistakes
In Nita Lelyveld s, Malibu Firm s Failure Wall Lets Workers Learn from their Mistakes, she asks
if we would be able to write our failures for everyone to see, including a boss. She talks about Jeff
Stibel, a chief executive of Dun Bradstreet, who has a Failure Wall that he found more useful and
educational. Stibel wanted to encourage creative risk by embracing failures and the lessons that
come with it. Lelyveld s conclusion was that acknowledging mistakes helps us feel less fear
about mistakes and encourages risk taking, creatively and personally. I couldn t agree more with
what Lelyveld had to say. Failure creates success; we learn from our mistakes and we have to
embrace them. I ve had many failures in my life and I ve learned from... Show more content on

I was the person who bended the needles at a specific angle and covered them with a plastic top.
It was my first week and I was learning very quickly but I had gotten a little cocky and tried to do
everything too fast. My shift after lunch had just started and I was given blue needles to cover, I
covered them with precision and speed. I was given another set of blue needles and covered the
majority of them before I noticed I was mixing two different needles together. I panicked; I rushed
to get a second box and started sorting through about 100 needles. I couldn t sort through all of
them and fessed up that I had made a mistake. I was called to the manager s office and was given a
warning. It didn t take long for me to start paying more attention to my work. A mistake like this
taught me how to be a better employee and make fewer mistakes for the management to worry
about. Failures are something you shouldn t be afraid of its something that you should
acknowledge. Acknowledging your mistakes help you become a more productive person always
striving for the better. Whether the mistakes are big as mine was in high school or small like mine
was at my first job, you learn from them significantly. When you make a mistake you know what

Swinburne s Rebuttal To The Substantial Problem Of Evil In...
I posit that God if [He] does exist is ageless, timeless, omniscient, and omnipresent insofar as He
exists in a dimension outside time and three dimensional space. Because of that, and given the
limits of epistemic accessibility, it seems rather impossible to say with certainty what about God is
objectively true. In fact, to say anything more than that outside of what is possibly or probably the
case concerning God, is akin to poetry, a series of metaphors characterizing a hyper dimensional
being. In fact, it seems odd to attach a gender to the Divine, much less an anthropomorphic form
with such certainty. From hereafter, I propose that we refer to God as either an It or, if one felt so
inclined, seeing as only a mother could incubate life prior to birth, I propose... Show more content

Thereafter, I will attempt to show the falseness of each view in two ways. First, I will present
my theory of knowledge that is currently under development, and which intuits with the limits
of human three dimensional perception. Given the early stages of my developing epistemic
theory, I shall enlist the help of an established epistemic tool in Stephen Wykstra s Condition of
Reasonable Epistemic Access (CORNEA), a principle that intends to serve as an answer to both
Rowe and Swinburne, albeit mostly the latter. Finally, I will briefly explicate a multiverse
solution to the problem of evil whereby I will attempt to show how a multiverse could on
appearances satisfy the conditions set by both the theist and the atheist in a manner that is
conceivable by both able to be understood by the intellect as well as the senses so as to serve as
an anti metaphor. In fact, I aim to show that my prima facie proposal for a multiverse theodicy
could give at least prima facie satisfaction to Richard Swinburne s Christian based

MNCs are likely to be less risky than purely domestic firms because much of the risk faced
overseas is diversifiable.

Money supply was limited to the amount of gold held by a country s central bank. Any change in its
holdings of gold needed to be matched by a change in the number of local currency units
outstanding. 2.(ESM14, ch2 q5) What are the advantages and disadvantages of the fixed exchange

Achievements Of The Qianlong Emperor
The Qianlong Emperor is one of the most notable emperors in Chinese history due to the
complexity of his reign. Qianlong was the fourth emperor of the Qing Dynasty from 1735 to
1796. This is one of the longest in Chinese History. The first 40 years were some of his greatest
achievements, however the last 20 years were met with fraud, corruption, and a declining
popularity. In this essay, I will argue that despite having a major blemish to his reign, the Qianlong
Emperorwas a successful emperor. I am defining and measuring successfulness based on 1) the
ability to grow the empire 2) whether or not they have good intentions for empire and 3) control
and security over the empire. The Qianlong Emperor s greatest successes shine through his
militaristic campaigns, foreign relations, and his protection and his advocating for art. However, it
is also stained by corruption and bad management.
Qianlong s strong dynasty is formed by his many military achievements and is an example of his
successfulness by the massive growth that he accomplished. In the 18th century under Qianlong,
there was an expansion of arable lands, a population boom, and a good administration. The Qing
Empire was on the rise. Military campaigns from 1755 1760 against the Turks and the Mongols
helped eliminate the danger of invasion. It also led to the creation of New Province (Xinjiang) in
northwest China. This helped enlarge the empire by 600,000 square miles. He also had campaigns
in the south, however they

A Day At Merritt Reservoir
Have you ever smelled 4 day old moldy tube socks that have been soaked in lake water and left
under a bed? As a cabin keeper at Merritt Reservoir I had many bizarre encounters in a mere three
month summer break. Imagine walking into the crammed bait shop on a crisp summer morning.
You clock in for the day and gather all the supplies needed to get the job done. These supplies may
range from the typical cleaning utensils such as rags and window cleaner, extra toiletpaper and
towels, Febreeze, and rubber gloves for sticky situations. However, you also must be sure to
grab mousetraps, a bible, and a strange device that consists of a hook on a long wooden rod. You
will soon learn what these items are for, and how handy they can be throughout the day ahead.
The ongoing task of the day is to heave your massive cleaning cart up and down the slopping old
concrete walkways leading to each cabin. This monster is convenient since it carries all of your
items and you have them handy all at once, but can be a workout on a long day. When cleaning
cabins, you do not have a set amount of hours to look forward to finishing. Every day, you are
given a set amount of cabins, which can vary depending on how busy the lake is. You must
complete that set amount throughout the day, regardless of how fast or slow you work. The first
cabin of the day houses a family of 4 who must rarely rough it in the woods. They have requested
every day this week to be the first to get cleaned out in the

The Scottsboro Trials And Racial Prejudice
Can racial bias have an effect on the verdict of being guilty or innocent? The American judicial
courtroom has been comprised of the nation s many greatest racial discriminatory cases over the
past century, but the most racially upstanding case, when referring to Harper Lee s To Kill a
Mockingbird includes The Scottsboro Trials. Both stories uprise in the 1930s, displaying a white
supremacist mindset, which two cases fall into the conviction of rape. The Scottsboro case started
on a train to northern Alabama to southern Tennessee, when nine African American
boys, ranging in
ages from 13 19, allegedly raped two innocent Caucasian women, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates.
Racial discrimination uprises in American judicial system when shown in To Kill a Mockingbird
and The Scottsboro Trials through the racial prejudice within the jury in the courtroom, easy
accessibility to target African Americans, biased accusations, as well as the social pressure to serve
in one s defense. According to American history, prejudice is shown through the courtroom s jury
when making decisions to send the alleged African Americans to jail. On March 24, 1931, nine
African American lives were jeopardized with the false accusations of rape that further scrutinizes
the nation s controversial look upon justice. Referring to Abigail Thernson and Henry Fetter when
talking about The Scottsboro Trials it states, Represented by unprepared out of date counsel who

prevailing in the Southern states of American in mid 1930 s. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird
racism is a major theme and is relevant between blacks and whites.. Racism can be defined as
prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a dififferent race based n
the belief that one s own race is superior. Racism is a belief that all members of same race possess
characteristics, abilities or qualities speisfic to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as
inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism in To Kill a Mockingbird can be seen in the
case of Tom Robinson and Calpurnia.
The trial of Tom Robinson, a court issue of an innocent
black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The trail clearly showed
Tom Robinson as not guilty, the Jury still decided on a verdict that made him a culprit. The

History Of The Clayton Antitrust Act
When Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated in 1913, he stated in his address that, We shall deal with
our economic system as it is and as it may be modified, not as it might be if we had a clean sheet of
paper to write upon (First Inaugural Address, online). He did just that when he passed the Clayton
Antitrust Act in October 1914. The Sherman Antitrust Actwas passed in 1890, but it was very vague
in the way it described monopolies (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Big business took advantage of
the loopholes, which diminished competition (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Although Roosevelt
and Taft successfully busted about 150 trusts, big businesses continued to grow and our entire
economic system remained in the hands of a few men (Taft Biography, online; T. Roosevelt Section
8, online; Clayton Antitrust, online). Wilson requested Congress to modify the Sherman Antitrust
Act, and the Clayton Antitrust Act was born (Clayton Antitrust, online). It is An Act To supplement
existing laws against unlawful restraints and monopolies, and for other purposes (HR 15657,
online). The Sherman Act simply declared monopolies illegal, while the Clayton Act declared
activities linked with monopolies to be illegal (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Such activities
include mergers and acquisitions that are intended substantially to lessen competition, or to tend to
create a monopoly (HR 15657, online). The Federal Trade Commission Act, passed about a month
before the Clayton Act, banned

Next 11 Research Paper
The purpose of this research paper is to take an in depth investigation of a topic related to
international economics. After taking an in depth investigation of What and Who is the Next 11
we will be able to describe in full an overview of the next 11, differences between next 11 and
BRIC, current consumer trends, N11 business environments, potential drawbacks, and future
scenarios. We will have a full understanding of what defines the Next 11, what composes them and
why they are who they are.
First of all who and what are the Next 11. The Next Eleven, known also as N 11, is a term coined by
Goldman Sachs in late 2005 to represent the eleven countries it thought could potentially have a
BRIC like impact in rivaling in the G7 nations. The N11 countries are Bangladesh, Egypt,
Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey and Vietnam.
Although varied both geographically and economically, these 11 nations have highlights in like
manner that are accepted to single out their high financial potential.
All have extensive and developing populations. Between 1980 and 2008, population development
was most noteworthy in Pakistan at 110.8%, with the least being in South Korea, with 28.4%
period development;
Of the N11 countries, Indonesia had the largest population as of January 2008, with 228.9 million

The Poem †Mother To Son’ By Langston Hughes First
Published
The poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes first published in 1922 and The Road not Taken
by Robert Frost have a number of similarities. These poems are parables in which experienced
people give advice about life choices. In both poems, the personas were initially in some trouble
in life but they currently have no remorse for the way they made choices and lived. Also, both
poems have a moral lesson that life may not always be easy but at the end, the choices that people
make will determine their destiny. However, the poems are considerably different in their writing
style, diction, the point of view, tone and imagery. This essay aims to compare and contrast the two
poems. Though having similarities in the theme and use of symbolism and... Show more content on

He, however, chose the road that was less favorable to people. This road represents a road of hard
work or integrity since majority of people love short cuts to life. In the end, the speaker is not
only relieved but also proud that he took that road. He says I shall be telling this with a sigh
(Frost 16). The reason for him telling the story is to give advice because he is proud of the
decision that he made.
Also, Hughes and Frost both use symbolism and imagery to bring out the picture about life. For
Hughes, the stairs symbolize the life life that has been lived through pressing on because of the
difficulties and uncertainties involved. The mother symbolizes the old generation of people who
are experienced and their role in giving advice. The old generation is familiar with life challenges
that the younger generation, symbolized by the son, are undergoing. They provide hope for the
young generation. The dark corners without light symbolize times of uncertainties, the corner
symbolizes changes experienced in life, and the climbing symbolizes difficult situations requiring
extra effort and so on. Reading through the poem a person can easily picture the life that the
speaker lived.
Conversely, Frost also uses symbolism in his poem. The divergent roads that emerge as the
persona is traveling symbolize a dilemma in life. The persona needed to make a tough choice in life
for it was impossible to live a double life.

Deaf Culture Definition
Culture is a term that is not easily defined, not for lack of trying. When considering Deaf culture
however, it gets even more complex. One definition of Deaf culture by M.J. Bienvenu and Betty
Colonomos describe it as the values, languages, traditions, group norms, identities and rules of
social interaction of a group (Bienvenu, M.J. Colonomos, B. 1989). When first being taught about
Deaf culture, many people assume that things such as hand waving, foot stomping or flickering
lights to gain attention, or relying background information about a person when you first meet, are
definitions of Deaf culture. However, those are simply examples of group norms within Deaf
culture, not the culture as a whole. To reduce a culture down to only the norms of its people is
greatly undervaluing it. Culture is the whole of a people, regardless of what their norms or habits
are. That being said, the Deaf population is a part of a unique culture that values visual language,
passed down traditions and community.
Many Deaf individuals may be bi cultural and have experienced acculturation or enculturation.
Acculturation is the adaption of two or more cultures and adoption of bevioural patterns of the

only applies to estates of $5.45 million and over, this tax only applies to the wealthy. Enacted in
1916 to help finance World War I, the estate tax
has come under more scrutiny lately because of our
government s financial situation and the one hundredth anniversary (Caron 825). The intellectual
world is divided on whether to repeal, reform, or keep unchanged the estate tax. Some even argue
that transfers of wealth should not be taxed at all. This essay will contend that the current estate
tax should be replaced with a lifetime accessions tax to encourage donors, reduce concentrations of
wealth, and safeguard equality of opportunity. Additionally, this paper will compare the lifetime
accessions tax to other proposed alternatives. In place for over one hundred years now, the estate
tax was put into place to do more than just finance World War I. In 1916, there were extremely
wealthy families, such as the Vanderbilt s and the Carnegie s, that dominated industries and held a
large portion of the nation s wealth. Part of the purpose of the estate tax was to curb massive
amounts of inter generational wealth that was common amongst these families. The government
saw the money being passed down from generation to generation as an opportunity for more
revenue and a burden upon an

Out Of The Past Themes
Out of the Past is definitely an interesting movie with a lot of things to talk about. I will touch
briefly upon two main things I have noticed during the screen: the film noire genre and the image of
the femme fatale.
Provided the dark theme of the storyline, film noire is definitely the way to go in terms of genre.
The story follows Jeff Bailey in his quest to wrap up his old unfinished businesses, all the while
tangled up in a web of deceit and plotting of a shady businessman and his girlfriend. There are the
underlying themes of lust, betrayal, violence and some deaths. A lot of the scenes also make use of
low key lighting to intensify the drama, thus contributing to the melodramatic and expressionistic
attributes of the film. For example,

Evaluation Of The Early Year s Foundation Stage
This written document will discuss assessments within the early year s foundation stage which I
believe to have the potential of creating positive outcomes for children and families in a
mainstream primary school where I am currently a teaching assistant. Throughout, I will make
reference to reception children which covers ages four and five of the EYFS. I aim to justify this
element of practice using a combination of literature and reflective experiences to evaluate how
this practice contributes to quality outcomes. I aim to develop an action plan (appendix 1) that
supports the improvement of assessment at Foundation stage level and critically and reflectively

After researching, I am aware that the Te Whariki curriculum and the Early Years Foundation

Te Whariki assessment process learning stories seems more enjoyable, however the EYFS use a

Stereotypes Native American Mascots
Stereotyping and Prejudice of Native American Mascots
Introduction
Stereotypes are a natural part of evolutions attempt to survive a constantly changing world.
Originally, psychologists and sociologist believed stereotypes were used to navigate the
dangerous world in order to survive. Stereotypes allowed people to make quick decisions about
rival or threatening groups of people, objects, and animals without having to analyze the costs and
benefits of the situation. As the world has evolved, stereotypes continue to aid the human race in
making decisions, good or bad, about another social group swiftly and usually unconsciously.
Many of the stereotypes used today are not crucial to survival but instead are used to represent
social ideas and images about another group of people. However, as useful as stereotypes were for
evolution, negativity tends to be associated with the stigmas in todays society.
Though there are millions of examples of negative stereotyping, this paper will focus on the
negativity associated with stereotypes concerning Native American mascots used to represent
sports teams across the United States. Mascots, logos, and team chants are a powerful platform that
symbolizes unity and pride. However, when that platform is used to single out and exaggerate
sacred cultural rituals of minority groups through inappropriate stereotypes there are harmful social
and personal consequences. To fully understand the impact Native American mascots have on the

The Purpose of the Federal Reserve System Essay
Over the past few years we have realized the impact that the Federal Government has on our
economy, yet we never knew enough about the subject to understand why. While taking this
Economics course it has brought so many things to our attention, especially since we see inflation,
gas prices, unemployment and interest rates on the rise. It has given us a better understanding of
the effect of the Government on the economy, the stock market, the interest rates, etc. Since the
Federal Government has such a control over our Economy, we decided to tackle the subject of the
Federal Reserve Systemand try to get a better understanding of the history, the structure, and the
monetary policyof the power that it holds.

One form of direct control can be exercised by adjusting the legal reserve ratio (the proportion of
its deposits that a member bank must hold in its reserve account), and as a result, increasing or
decreasing the amount of new loans that the commercial banks can make. Because loans give
rise to new deposits, the possible money supply is, in this way, expanded or reduced. This policy
tool has not been used too much in recent years. The money supply may also be influenced
through manipulation of the discount rate, which is the rate if interest charged by the Federal
Reserve banks on short term secured loans to member banks. Since these loans are typically
sought to maintain reserves at their required level, an increase in the cost of such loans has an
effect similar to that of increasing the reserve requirement. The classic method of indirect control
is through open market operations, first widely used in the 1920s and now used daily to make
some adjustment to the market. Federal Reserve bank sales or purchases of securities on the open
market tend to reduce or increase the size of commercial bank reserves. When the Federal Reserve
sells securities, the purchasers pay for them with checks drawn on their deposits, thereby reducing
the reserves of the banks on which the checks are drawn. The three instruments of control explained
above have been conceded to be more effective in preventing inflation in times of high economic
activity than in bringing about revival from a

Justice Should Not Be A Solution
Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter,
land, or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is
disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the
individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is
to step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think,
What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened
land of the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that
everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its
power to protect the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things
work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be
influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to
remain unrepresented. In efforts to better the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and
the values of America must be preserved. Throughout the history of America, prosecution has
persisted. From the moment that white men arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other
humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as fair, others did not. It wasn t until after many
long years of war, and

Lord Of The Flies Lomb Song Analysis
This song depicts how the boys felt when they first arrived at the island. They saw that there were
no adults and were excited about all the fun they were planning to have together and without
parental supervision. The song paints an island in a positive light saying that it s a paradise, just
like the boy s original fantasies.
Welcome to the Jungle Guns and Roses
This song relates to Lord of the Flies by showing how the boys slowly became more and more
like animals. In the beginning, things were great. The boys had fun, swam, and ate fruit under
Ralph s leadership. But as Jack s obsession with hunting became unmanageable and he replaced
himself as the new leader of the new tribe , the boys became more and more savage. This chaos
and destructive behavior is modeled in Welcome to the Jungle by lyrics such as welcome to the
jungle, it gets worse here everyday, Ya learn to act like an animal.
Mob song Beauty and the Beast
The mob song from the movie Beauty and the Beast is very similar to the boys ritualistic hunting
dance. They both have a leader Gaston/Jack who urge on the mob to kill the beast.
Gaston and Jack understand that fear can perpetuate a mob mentality that is easily controlled
through a form of frightened excitement and through the absence of light. That is why both Simon
and Piggy both died at the hand of the tribe. The Mob Song uses imagery of darkness and shadow,
much like the novel and both a fueled by a frenzied excitement from the mobs.
Ralph A character Sketch
One of the main characters in Lord of the Flies, Ralph is one of the oldest bigguns on the island.
His good looks and confident demeanor quickly makes him the obvious leader to the boys.
Although he lacks Piggy s apparent intelligence, Ralph is relatively logical and responsible, with
sound judgment and a firm moral scale. But, like the other boys, he can fall into the same entraping
instincts that affect the other boys, as demonstrated by his part Simon s murder.
Regardless, Ralph remains the most civilized character throughout the novel, save for Piggy. At the
end of the novel, it was somewhat tragic because Ralph finally understands that evil lives inside of
all the boys. This leaves him depressed

Falsettos originally began as two different musicals, March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland
until the original Broadway run when they were combined and each musical was turned into its
own act. The story explains the lives of Marvin, his son Jason, the psychiatrist Mendel, Marvin s
ex wife Trina and his boyfriend Whizzer. The two opening numbers Four Jews in a Room
Bitching and A Tight Knit Family give the audience an introduction into the lives of the
characters and some of the issues that are going to be dealt with throughout the course of the
show. Marvin has recently left his wife Trina to be with his lover Whizzer which has greatly
disrupted the life of his 10 year old son. Due to this, Trina and Marvin try to get Jason to see the

Greed In The Arabian Nights
The consumption of greed
The First story I decided to focus my analysis on is The Arabian Nights also referred to as A
Thousand and One Nights by an unknown author. This story begins with the sultan shahrayar and
his wife. When shahrayar finds out his wife is unfaithful he kills her and vows to Mary a new
woman every night prior to killing her every morning to avoid betrayal. His vizier s daughter,
Scheherazade comes up with a plan to stop shahrayar. She marries him and tells him a story that
night. Although, she doesn t finish it so he will be eager to hear the rest the next night. The next
night comes and she finishes the story and starts another. She tells story s such as The Story of the
Merchant and the Demon , The first old man s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagery is the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things, or of such images
collectively. In the story The Arabian Nights there wasn t much imagery because the style of
writing in the collection of short stories seems to include more dialect rather than imagery.
However, in the story In a Grove the imagery that stood out was the way the weapons showed
greed. An expression of this was the testimony of the policeman when he caught Tajomour. He
stated You say that this bow and these arrows look like the ones owned by the dead man? Then
Tajomour must be the murderer. (Akutagawa,1922). This quote shows us that Tajomour was
greedy for those weapons resulting in him killing an innocent man to get them. comparable to
imagery is the characters in these two stories actions towards the greed they feel. The action that
lead to greed in The Arabian Nights was expressed when the king felt compelled to let Shahrazad
live. The king thought to his self I will spare her until I hear the rest of the story; then I will have
her put to death the next day. (unknown, 23). The king is so greedy to hear the next section of the
story he is willing to go against his rules and extend her execution.
Cohesive with this story Takehiko also shows the same greed that the king shows in the story in
a grove with this expression in his confessional. He expressed I went on to tell them id buried the
things in a grove behind the mountain, and that I d like to sell them at a low price to anyone
who would come to have them . . . you see, isn t greed terrible? He was beginning to be moved by
my talk before he knew it. (Akutagawa ,1922). This shows how Takehiko let his greed for the
treasure at a lower price lure him into his own

The Ecstasy of Reason Essay
In the Bacchae, Euripides questions the authority of god versus man and man s allegiance to the
gods. Pentheus is caught in a unique struggle of maintaining authority in his own kingdom and
keeping allegiance to his favored god Apollo. The appearance of Dionysus in Thebes raises a
conflict for Pentheus in that he can not accept the authority of a god other than the one he has
chosen to revere within his kingdom. Pentheus resists Dionysussupreme authority as a show of
solidarity with Apollo and the laws of reason versus Dionysus and the disruption of civil order.
Pentheus is worshiped and revered in Thebes just as he reveres Apollo. Apollo represents
rationality, law, order, harmony and philosophical enlightenment. Dionysus is... Show more content

The sex life of the female citizens should be regulated, bound to laws and customs and have no
contact with the filthy mysteries (ln 260) that Dionysus commands. The Bacchae represent a force
that Pentheus cannot control and this loss of control over his city is the ultimate unmanning of
Pentheus as a leader. The prospect of expressed female sexuality infuriates Pentheus who refers to
the spreading eroticism as obscene disorder (ln 232). Pentheus vows to destroy Dionysus, that
effeminate stranger, the man who infects our women with this strange disease and pollutes our
beds. (ln 353) In Pentheus view there is no room for Dionysus licentiousness. Dionysus offends
Pentheus sense of balance and order on both a civic and a personal level.
Dionysus has long hair, rosy cheeks and displays no overtly frightening qualities yet Pentheus takes
an instant dislike to the strange, beautiful and charming stranger that has appeared in his land.
Pentheus tries to reestablish his authority over the stranger during a verbal battle upon their first
encounter. Dionysus baits Pentheus to try and reestablish his rule and Pentheus asserts his position
as a great and powerful ruler by announcing, But I say: chain him. And I am the stronger here. (ln
503). He denounces the god as a fake and decides that hanging is a just punishment for the imposter
who dares to challenge Pentheus rule. Dionysus is

How America s High Tech Sweatshops could lead to Brain Drain in the tech industry
Economic globalization has created an international skilled labor race, where developed countries,
compete for best and brightest human capital to advance their economies. By utilizing selective
immigration policies, these economically advanced countries target highly educated, and skilled
labor in foreign countries to meet their changing economic needs. The United States is no different
and has utilized special guest worker programs to strengthen its workforce. These guest worker
programs have sparked a host of controversial debates, especially during the 2016 presidential
election.

been hiring a large number of cheaper skilled labor from India. These skilled laborers are often

many proposed legislations to revamp the program in order to better protect American
workers.[footnoteRef:4] It is undeniable that domestically, the protections of American workers
need to be prioritized, but a hidden dimension to the debate is the potential for a massive exodus of
foreign workers since; the current U.S. climate and legislation, mainly through the current president

Metaphors In Their Eyes Were Watching God
This novel is the story of Janie Crawford s quest for love, told, as noted prior, as a casing. The
novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, presents numerous topics, for example, love and marriage,
discourse and hush, and gender parts. Zora Neale Hurston makes a radiant showing of making
what men like Joe Starks felt the run of the mill parts were for the female African American. In this
exposition I will introduce an outline of the loveexperienced by the real character Janie with her
husbands, examination of characters of Janie, Joe, Phoeby and porch sitters, Furthermore I will
likewise examine the metaphors, symbols utilized by the Hurston alongside my sentiment about the

Their Eyes Were Watching Godis a content lavishly invested with importance and reason which
utilizes idyllic dialect and folkloric symbolism to pass on its messages. Hurston utilizes
numerous symbols and metaphors as a part of Their Eyes Were Watching God to add to Janie s
story. Symbols stand for, speak to, or recommend something else. A metaphor, in any case, is a
more interesting methods of expression containing a suggested examination, in which a
statement or expression conventionally and fundamentally utilized for one thing is connected
to an alternate. One of the common metaphors in the novel is the picture of the skyline. As Janie
ascensions the pear tree to see what exists around her, she sees the skyline. The skyline
additionally plays a part at dusk, a period when the patio sitters sit outside toward the end of a
working day to watch the sun set. Janie needs to make an excursion to the skyline, and her trip
turns into a primary metaphor in the story. At dawn, Janie goes not far off to the train station to
meet and wed Tea Cake, trusting that this experience will take her to the skyline. The skyline is
an image of Janie s long lasting quest for happiness. Toward the end of the story, Pheoby is on
edge to look for her own particular skyline with her husband, as an aftereffect of listening to Janie s

Strength Of Tensile Strength
2.1.8.4. Tensile strength:
Lightweight and normal weight concretes have similar tensile strengths, though lightweight
exhibits greater variability. The tensile strength of normal weight concrete of equal compressive
strength may vary within a wide range depending, among other parameters, on the shape and
surface texture of the aggregate. Experimental tests indicate that the tensile strength of concrete is
highly variable and ranges from a bout 8 12% of its compressive strength. The actual value depends
on the type of the test and crack propagation pattern at failure. (Ghoneim and El Mihlmy, 2008)
(Fabian, 2010), the tensile strength of concrete is important when considering cracking. For
specimens loaded under uniaxial compression, cracking parallel to the line of action of the load
implies some influence of the tensile strength of the specimens units. Depending on the load
impact, tensile strength can be divided into flexural tensile strength, splitting ... Show more content

Oppression Of Women And Women Of Color
For my Final project in WS, I have chosen to talk about the oppression of women, and women of
color. To narrow more in on the topic, I have chosen to discuss the oppression of women in the
work force and all the different forms of oppression women face. Oppression is defined as, A
situation in which people are governed in an unfair and cruel way and prevented from having
opportunities and freedom, (dictionary.cambridge.org). Oppression can be caused by many
different things. People can feel oppressed because they are being compared to the opposite gender.
People can be oppressed being compared to other age groups. And people can feel oppressed
when being compared to different races. Women of color feel oppressed because they are
constantly being compared to white women, and some may say they do not always have the
same privileges as others. I have enjoyed reading and researching about this topic, but at the same
time have had a hard time truly understanding it. To be completely transparent I am a privileged
white girl and throughout my whole life I have never felt that I faced oppression. I have witnessed
it, but never experienced it. The oppression I have witnessed has only been in the work force;
which I will discuss later on.
In our first reading in this class we read a book called Sisters in Spirit which was about the
differences between the Haudenosaunee women and White women. When I was first reading this I
kept thinking how unfair the situation was and that I

What A Difference A Week Makes Lake Air Montessori
Week #7, what a difference a week makes. Lake Air Montessori is definitely a different world
from the traditional classroom I had been in the prior six weeks. Upon entering the room I
introduced myself to the aide, Mrs. Rodriguez. While we waited on Mrs. Cannon to join us, she
asked the children to make their behavior choice for the day and she added their clip to their
choice. After Mrs. Cannon came to the room, she introduced herself and then introduced me to
the classroom. Another Mrs. Rodriguez, so we had to decide what the students were to call us
on Tuesdays. We decided that on Tuesdays, we would call the other Rodriguez, Ms. Epie. Now,
she turned on the CD player and we did a few warm up songs and the days of the week and
months of the year. Next, she called a meeting with the students because she had been gone to a
workshop the day before. She started off by telling them she was pleased with the way they had
acted while she was out. However, it quickly turned into how disappointed she was in the fact
that several students had not turned in their projects, and many of the ones that had turned in the
project did not do them according to directions. She then proceeded to tell them that when they
get older and had jobs they would get fired for not completing projects. I was taken back by her
demeanor because these children are 3, 4, and 5 years old. WOW! Talk about holding kids to high
expectations. Once she was done with her rant, she grabbed a bag of

Short Analysis for The Raven and “What Troubled Poe’s...
The Raven
I feel the title suggests that the poem might entail a story about a raven. Ravens are often
associated with death, due to their dark, eerie features, as well as with trickery, thus the title
clues that the story will most likely be shadier. The speaker of the poem is a man who is
troubled by the memories of his lost love, Lenore, and of his impending death. And my soul from
out that shadow that lies floating on the floor shall be lifted nevermore! (106, 107) indicates the
speaker knows he has the possibility of dying soon. The line, Quaff, oh quaff this kind repenthe
and forget this lost Lenore! (81), shows that the speaker is having great difficulty letting go of
Lenore and may be even guilty over her death as he is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He carries on asking if the dark forces will clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name
Lenore , but the Raven replies, as always, Nevermore meaning he will be separate from his love
in the afterlife. The understanding developed in the poem is not particularly important, in my
opinion, as it is not necessarily experienced in the same sadness, as the speaker of the poem
understands. Nonetheless, the overall thought of the poem is very deep. The author pulls an idea
that people wouldn t generally consider and uses many layers of thought to create intricate
meaning and profundity. Being that my own father passed away a few years ago, I understand
how elements of the physical world can provoke unwanted thoughts. The poem encourages its
reader to see the world from his point of view. He deeply explains how thoughts can be prompted
because of something in your atmosphere it forces readers to think about their own circumstances
and reflect on their surroundings. The Raven is a complex piece of literature that leaves its readers
with a new sense of reality.
What Troubled Poe s Raven
The title of this poem, What Troubled Poe s Raven , hints on its meaning due to what appears to
be mild sarcasm over the poem, The Raven , written by Edgar Allan Poe. In The Raven , the Raven
is a creature of death that tormented the soul of the speaker, yet the title of this poem calls the
creature Poe s Raven even though Poe s character hated the Raven. Knowing that, you

Journey Of Truth In John Cheever s The Swimmer
Journey of Truth The short story The Swimmer by John Cheever, is about a man s swimming
journey home after a long night of drinking. Cheever uses the man s journey home as a metaphor
for the journey of alcohol. Cheever shows the parallels between the man s journey home and the
journey alcohol takes a person in many ways. The main two are the way he feels after each new
pool, and the time that lapses on his journey. The first way Cheever uses to show the parallels, is
the way the main character feels after each pool. The man, in the beginning, is strong and
energetic, feels good about his life, and is looked up to by his friends. The man thinks of himself
as a legendary figure (Cheever, Pg1). As if there was nothing he could not do. As his journey
progresses he changes. Physically, he gets weaker, and is unable to pull himself out of the pool
without the use of the pool ladder and is unwilling to dive into the pool, as before. He goes from
being warm to being chilled to the bone. The man would also start feeling bad if he did not drink.
A person who uses alcohol in a continuous manner, and then tries to give up drinking for a
prolonged amount of time, can go through withdrawals from the alcohol. The reason that this
shows parallels between the man s journey home and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Time in the beginning of the story went by slowly. Then, towards the middle of his journey home
he realizes that the leaves have started to change colors, and that it was getting cooler. The journey
of alcohol and the man s journey are tied together. When the man started his journey he was warm
and happy, and by the time the story ended the man was cold and miserable. So what Cheever is
trying to illustrate is that the man s journey started in the summer, and ended getting close to
winter. This was obtained by describing the seasons changing from summer to fall and then to

Physical And Psychological Effects Of Depressants
Drugs are substances that have physical and psychological effects on the body. Once an individual
has taken drugs multiple times they start to build a tolerance. When tolerance is built an individual
will up the dosage of the drug. Now the individual will be addicted to the drug. People are addicted
to drugs to compliment physical and psychological dependence. There are many different types of
drugs such as psychoactive drugs, stimulants, and hallucinogens. Psychoactive drugs are drugs that
affect conciseness, mood, and your thoughts. Depressants are a type of psychoactive drug. Physical

Some of the most common stimulants are methamphetamine, caffeine, nicotine, cocaine, and
Ecstasy. Methamphetamine is a highly addictive stimulant drug. Its physical effects include
disturbed sleep patterns, Nausea, and Bizarre, erratic, sometimes violent behavior.
Methamphetamine increases the amount of dopamine, which results in increased chemicals in the
brain. Methamphetamine is a dopamine agonist. Caffeine is a CNS stimulant. It is the world s most
consumed drug. Some physical effects include high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and
hyperglycemia. Caffeine binds to our brain s adenosine receptors; preventing the chemical from
binding with the receptors and making us tired. (This is what caffeine does to your brain, 2014)
Caffeine is a receptor antagonist. Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical substance present in
tobacco. Some physical effects include heart disease, stroke, and depression. The nicotine molecule
is shaped like a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine and its receptors are involved
in many functions, including muscle movement, breathing, heart rate, learning, and memory. They
also cause the release of other neurotransmitters and hormones that affect your mood, appetite,
memory, and more. When nicotine gets into the brain, it attaches to acetylcholine receptors and
mimics the actions of acetylcholine. (How Does Nicotine Act in the Brain? 2015) Nicotine is an
agonist to ACH. Cocaine is a highly addictive drug synthetically derived from coca. Some physical
effects of cocaine include increased heart rate, body temperature, and increased rate of breathing.
Normally, dopamine is then recycled back into the transmitting neuron by a specialized protein
called the dopamine transporter. If cocaine is present, it attaches to the dopamine transporter and
blocks the normal recycling process, resulting in a buildup of dopamine in the synapse, which
contributes to the pleasurable effects of cocaine.

The Fish By Elizabeth Bishop
The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop is a very colorful poem filled with lots of different outcomes than
our usual expectations. The poem is very symbolic through its use color and the fish it describes.
The poem is also written in free verse, which you could relate to the nature of the fish. It is set on a
boat in the middle of the ocean, with the ocean symbolizing chaos, the nature of the poem. The fish
causes some conflict within this poem. First, the fish changes the speaker s expectation of how
events will occur. We can infer that the speaker did not find catching the fish as fulfilling as she
thought she would have. Based on the long debating and dangling of the fish, it is obvious that the
speaker feels at least moderately conflicted about

  • 2. Undertaking Poem Annotated The poem, Undertaking describes the loss of a women s husband. The wife cleans and treats her loved one s body as if it is still alive. But she realizes the death, until his body is taken away and not treated with the love she gave him. Even though her husband has passed away, the speaker seems to still have a relationship with him through the description of her delicate treatment towards him. The relationship between the wife and husband is still alive. Through the description of the poem we see that the wife does not see her husband as a dead body. She treats her husband s body as something alive that feels every touch. In the middle of the first stanza, phrases like, She took her time , She washed each finger , and Cleaning underneath ... • 5. Patriot Act Essays Patriot Act We re dealing with terrorists who operate by highly sophisticated methods and technologies, some of which were not even available when our existing laws were written. The bill before me accounts for the new realities and dangers posed by modern terrorists. It will help law enforcement to identify, dismantle, disrupt, and punish terrorists before they strike, (President George W. Bush at signing of Patriot Act, 2001). The terrorists of today cannot be reasoned with. We must do whatever necessary to ensure that there never will be another September 11th. Since the enactment of the Patriot Act, there have not been any major acts of terrorism committed on U.S. soil. If the Act had been established earlier, perhaps the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By establishing these bills, we will save this nation from another September 11th. If we fail to act upon our threats, we will be no different from other oppressed nations. Chief Justice Robert Jackson says, The Constitution is not a suicide pact. Failing to take strong measures to defend our nation against future attacks would amount to suicide. The U.S.A. Patriot Act is an important part of the nation s efforts to fight back to defend freedom and liberty. The ACLU has also influenced Congress to limit the sharing of information obtained through wire tapping. The Act has removed major barriers between communications of law enforcement, intelligence and national defense communities from talking and coordinating their work, to protecting the American people and national security. Senator John Edwards (D NC) said about the Patriot Act, We cannot prevail in the battle against terrorism if the right hand of our government has no idea what the left hand is doing. One example of the progress of this law was when a federal grand jury just recently had indicted an individual in Florida, Sami al Arian, for allegedly being the U.S. leader of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, one of the world s most violent terrorist outfits. Palestinian Islamic Jihad is responsible for the murder of over 100 innocent people including a young American, Alisa Flatow, who was killed in a tragic bus bombing incident in the Gaza ... • 6. Black Men And Public Space By Gloria Naylor Over the course of history, racial identity was the only thing that could set a person apart from one another. This has been proved not only in history but in society and people have to live with it in constant terms. While reading the story of Black Men and Public Space by Brent Staples and Mommy, What Does Nigger Mean? by Gloria Naylor, it became clear that people of color suffer from this ignorant mindset of others. It got to a point in which people of color did not know how to react or even look, while walking down the street, such as Staples. Other commonalities perceive people of color had faced were attaching the word Nigger to people of color, or mistaken a Black male as a criminal. All of these examples fall into the category of ignorance and racist stereotype. Something like this should not be tolerated, because it s implying more ignorance and racism. Ignorance creates chaos, and because of a different kind of actions that involved ignorance, chaos emerge from each of the actions. Three major themes that surround the experience of Staples and Naylor are racist stereotypes, ignorant behavior, and inequality of culture. Staple s states the way racial identity affected his life, from being seeing as a threating to being confused for a criminal. Unfortunately, this has become a sad/true fact in Staple s life, in his story Staples implies My first victim was a women white, well dressed probably in her early twenties (188). • 7. Firm s Failure Wall Lets Workers Learn From Their Mistakes In Nita Lelyveld s, Malibu Firm s Failure Wall Lets Workers Learn from their Mistakes, she asks if we would be able to write our failures for everyone to see, including a boss. She talks about Jeff Stibel, a chief executive of Dun Bradstreet, who has a Failure Wall that he found more useful and educational. Stibel wanted to encourage creative risk by embracing failures and the lessons that come with it. Lelyveld s conclusion was that acknowledging mistakes helps us feel less fear about mistakes and encourages risk taking, creatively and personally. I couldn t agree more with what Lelyveld had to say. Failure creates success; we learn from our mistakes and we have to embrace them. I ve had many failures in my life and I ve learned from... It was my first week and I was learning very quickly but I had gotten a little cocky and tried to do everything too fast. I was given another set of blue needles and covered the majority of them before I noticed I was mixing two different needles together. I panicked; I rushed to get a second box and started sorting through about 100 needles. I couldn t sort through all of them and fessed up that I had made a mistake. I was called to the manager s office and was given a warning. It didn t take long for me to start paying more attention to my work. A mistake like this taught me how to be a better employee and make fewer mistakes for the management to worry about. Failures are something you shouldn t be afraid of its something that you should acknowledge. Acknowledging your mistakes help you become a more productive person always striving for the better. Whether the mistakes are big as mine was in high school or small like mine was at my first job, you learn from them significantly. • 8. Swinburne s Rebuttal To The Substantial Problem Of Evil In... I posit that God if [He] does exist is ageless, timeless, omniscient, and omnipresent insofar as He exists in a dimension outside time and three dimensional space. Because of that, and given the limits of epistemic accessibility, it seems rather impossible to say with certainty what about God is objectively true. In fact, to say anything more than that outside of what is possibly or probably the case concerning God, is akin to poetry, a series of metaphors characterizing a hyper dimensional being. In fact, it seems odd to attach a gender to the Divine, much less an anthropomorphic form with such certainty. From hereafter, I propose that we refer to God as either an It or, if one felt so inclined, seeing as only a mother could incubate life prior to birth, I propose... First, I will present my theory of knowledge that is currently under development, and which intuits with the limits of human three dimensional perception. Given the early stages of my developing epistemic theory, I shall enlist the help of an established epistemic tool in Stephen Wykstra s Condition of Reasonable Epistemic Access (CORNEA), a principle that intends to serve as an answer to both Rowe and Swinburne, albeit mostly the latter. Finally, I will briefly explicate a multiverse solution to the problem of evil whereby I will attempt to show how a multiverse could on appearances satisfy the conditions set by both the theist and the atheist in a manner that is conceivable by both able to be understood by the intellect as well as the senses so as to serve as an anti metaphor. • 10. Achievements Of The Qianlong Emperor The Qianlong Emperor is one of the most notable emperors in Chinese history due to the complexity of his reign. Qianlong was the fourth emperor of the Qing Dynasty from 1735 to 1796. This is one of the longest in Chinese History. The first 40 years were some of his greatest achievements, however the last 20 years were met with fraud, corruption, and a declining popularity. In this essay, I will argue that despite having a major blemish to his reign, the Qianlong Emperorwas a successful emperor. I am defining and measuring successfulness based on 1) the ability to grow the empire 2) whether or not they have good intentions for empire and 3) control and security over the empire. The Qianlong Emperor s greatest successes shine through his militaristic campaigns, foreign relations, and his protection and his advocating for art. However, it is also stained by corruption and bad management. Qianlong s strong dynasty is formed by his many military achievements and is an example of his successfulness by the massive growth that he accomplished. In the 18th century under Qianlong, there was an expansion of arable lands, a population boom, and a good administration. The Qing Empire was on the rise. Military campaigns from 1755 1760 against the Turks and the Mongols helped eliminate the danger of invasion. It also led to the creation of New Province (Xinjiang) in northwest China. This helped enlarge the empire by 600,000 square miles. He also had campaigns in the south, however they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. A Day At Merritt Reservoir Have you ever smelled 4 day old moldy tube socks that have been soaked in lake water and left under a bed? As a cabin keeper at Merritt Reservoir I had many bizarre encounters in a mere three month summer break. Imagine walking into the crammed bait shop on a crisp summer morning. You clock in for the day and gather all the supplies needed to get the job done. These supplies may range from the typical cleaning utensils such as rags and window cleaner, extra toiletpaper and towels, Febreeze, and rubber gloves for sticky situations. However, you also must be sure to grab mousetraps, a bible, and a strange device that consists of a hook on a long wooden rod. You will soon learn what these items are for, and how handy they can be throughout the day ahead. The ongoing task of the day is to heave your massive cleaning cart up and down the slopping old concrete walkways leading to each cabin. This monster is convenient since it carries all of your items and you have them handy all at once, but can be a workout on a long day. When cleaning cabins, you do not have a set amount of hours to look forward to finishing. Every day, you are given a set amount of cabins, which can vary depending on how busy the lake is. You must complete that set amount throughout the day, regardless of how fast or slow you work. The first cabin of the day houses a family of 4 who must rarely rough it in the woods. They have requested every day this week to be the first to get cleaned out in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Scottsboro Trials And Racial Prejudice Can racial bias have an effect on the verdict of being guilty or innocent? The American judicial courtroom has been comprised of the nation s many greatest racial discriminatory cases over the past century, but the most racially upstanding case, when referring to Harper Lee s To Kill a Mockingbird includes The Scottsboro Trials. Both stories uprise in the 1930s, displaying a white supremacist mindset, which two cases fall into the conviction of rape. The Scottsboro case started on a train to northern Alabama to southern Tennessee, when nine African American boys, ranging in ages from 13 19, allegedly raped two innocent Caucasian women, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. Racial discrimination uprises in American judicial system when shown in To Kill a Mockingbird and The Scottsboro Trials through the racial prejudice within the jury in the courtroom, easy accessibility to target African Americans, biased accusations, as well as the social pressure to serve in one s defense. According to American history, prejudice is shown through the courtroom s jury when making decisions to send the alleged African Americans to jail. On March 24, 1931, nine African American lives were jeopardized with the false accusations of rape that further scrutinizes the nation s controversial look upon justice. Referring to Abigail Thernson and Henry Fetter when talking about The Scottsboro Trials it states, Represented by unprepared out of date counsel who had no more than a half an hour consult ... Racism: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee highlights many social upheaval prevailing in the Southern states of American in mid 1930 s. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird racism is a major theme and is relevant between blacks and whites.. Racism can be defined as prejudice, discrimination or antagonism directed against someone of a dififferent race based n the belief that one s own race is superior. Racism is a belief that all members of same race possess characteristics, abilities or qualities speisfic to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races. Racism in To Kill a Mockingbird can be seen in the case of Tom Robinson and Calpurnia.
The trial of Tom Robinson, a court issue of an innocent black man wrongly accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. The trail clearly showed Tom Robinson as not guilty, the Jury still decided on a verdict that made him a culprit. He did just that when he passed the Clayton Antitrust Act in October 1914. The Sherman Antitrust Actwas passed in 1890, but it was very vague in the way it described monopolies (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Big business took advantage of the loopholes, which diminished competition (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Although Roosevelt and Taft successfully busted about 150 trusts, big businesses continued to grow and our entire economic system remained in the hands of a few men (Taft Biography, online; T. Roosevelt Section 8, online; Clayton Antitrust, online). Wilson requested Congress to modify the Sherman Antitrust Act, and the Clayton Antitrust Act was born (Clayton Antitrust, online). It is An Act To supplement existing laws against unlawful restraints and monopolies, and for other purposes (HR 15657, online). The Sherman Act simply declared monopolies illegal, while the Clayton Act declared activities linked with monopolies to be illegal (Clayton Antitrust Act, online). Such activities include mergers and acquisitions that are intended substantially to lessen competition, or to tend to create a monopoly (HR 15657, online). The Poem †Mother To Son’ By Langston Hughes First Published The poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes first published in 1922 and The Road not Taken by Robert Frost have a number of similarities. These poems are parables in which experienced people give advice about life choices. In both poems, the personas were initially in some trouble in life but they currently have no remorse for the way they made choices and lived. Also, both poems have a moral lesson that life may not always be easy but at the end, the choices that people make will determine their destiny. This road represents a road of hard work or integrity since majority of people love short cuts to life. In the end, the speaker is not only relieved but also proud that he took that road. He says I shall be telling this with a sigh (Frost 16). The reason for him telling the story is to give advice because he is proud of the decision that he made. Also, Hughes and Frost both use symbolism and imagery to bring out the picture about life. For Hughes, the stairs symbolize the life life that has been lived through pressing on because of the difficulties and uncertainties involved. The mother symbolizes the old generation of people who are experienced and their role in giving advice. The old generation is familiar with life challenges that the younger generation, symbolized by the son, are undergoing. They provide hope for the young generation. The dark corners without light symbolize times of uncertainties, the corner symbolizes changes experienced in life, and the climbing symbolizes difficult situations requiring extra effort and so on. Reading through the poem a person can easily picture the life that the speaker lived. Conversely, Frost also uses symbolism in his poem. The divergent roads that emerge as the persona is traveling symbolize a dilemma in life. The persona needed to make a tough choice in life for it was impossible to live a double life. ... • 19. Deaf Culture Definition Culture is a term that is not easily defined, not for lack of trying. When considering Deaf culture however, it gets even more complex. One definition of Deaf culture by M.J. Bienvenu and Betty Colonomos describe it as the values, languages, traditions, group norms, identities and rules of social interaction of a group (Bienvenu, M.J. Colonomos, B. 1989). When first being taught about Deaf culture, many people assume that things such as hand waving, foot stomping or flickering lights to gain attention, or relying background information about a person when you first meet, are definitions of Deaf culture. However, those are simply examples of group norms within Deaf culture, not the culture as a whole. To reduce a culture down to only the norms of its people is greatly undervaluing it. Culture is the whole of a people, regardless of what their norms or habits are. That being said, the Deaf population is a part of a unique culture that values visual language, passed down traditions and community. Many Deaf individuals may be bi cultural and have experienced acculturation or enculturation. Acculturation is the adaption of two or more cultures and adoption of bevioural patterns of the surrounding culture and social confluences (Howard, Nigel. 2014). ... • 21. The Tax Should Be Replaced With A Lifetime Accessions Tax... The estate tax is a tax upon your right to transfer property at the time of your death. It is often called the death tax and it has been a partisan point of disagreement for quite some time. As the tax only applies to estates of $5.45 million and over, this tax only applies to the wealthy. Enacted in 1916 to help finance World War I, the estate tax has come under more scrutiny lately because of our government s financial situation and the one hundredth anniversary (Caron 825). The intellectual world is divided on whether to repeal, reform, or keep unchanged the estate tax. Some even argue that transfers of wealth should not be taxed at all. This essay will contend that the current estate tax should be replaced with a lifetime accessions tax to encourage donors, reduce concentrations of wealth, and safeguard equality of opportunity. Additionally, this paper will compare the lifetime accessions tax to other proposed alternatives. In place for over one hundred years now, the estate tax was put into place to do more than just finance World War I. In 1916, there were extremely wealthy families, such as the Vanderbilt s and the Carnegie s, that dominated industries and held a large portion of the nation s wealth. Part of the purpose of the estate tax was to curb massive amounts of inter generational wealth that was common amongst these families. The story follows Jeff Bailey in his quest to wrap up his old unfinished businesses, all the while tangled up in a web of deceit and plotting of a shady businessman and his girlfriend. Stereotypes Native American Mascots Stereotyping and Prejudice of Native American Mascots Introduction Stereotypes are a natural part of evolutions attempt to survive a constantly changing world. Originally, psychologists and sociologist believed stereotypes were used to navigate the dangerous world in order to survive. Stereotypes allowed people to make quick decisions about rival or threatening groups of people, objects, and animals without having to analyze the costs and benefits of the situation. As the world has evolved, stereotypes continue to aid the human race in making decisions, good or bad, about another social group swiftly and usually unconsciously. Many of the stereotypes used today are not crucial to survival but instead are used to represent social ideas and images about another group of people. The Purpose of the Federal Reserve System Essay Over the past few years we have realized the impact that the Federal Government has on our economy, yet we never knew enough about the subject to understand why. While taking this Economics course it has brought so many things to our attention, especially since we see inflation, gas prices, unemployment and interest rates on the rise. It has given us a better understanding of the effect of the Government on the economy, the stock market, the interest rates, etc. Since the Federal Government has such a control over our Economy, we decided to tackle the subject of the Federal Reserve Systemand try to get a better understanding of the history, the structure, and the monetary policyof the power that it holds. The Federal Reserve System ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One form of direct control can be exercised by adjusting the legal reserve ratio (the proportion of its deposits that a member bank must hold in its reserve account), and as a result, increasing or decreasing the amount of new loans that the commercial banks can make. Because loans give rise to new deposits, the possible money supply is, in this way, expanded or reduced. This policy tool has not been used too much in recent years. The money supply may also be influenced through manipulation of the discount rate, which is the rate if interest charged by the Federal Reserve banks on short term secured loans to member banks. Since these loans are typically sought to maintain reserves at their required level, an increase in the cost of such loans has an effect similar to that of increasing the reserve requirement. The classic method of indirect control is through open market operations, first widely used in the 1920s and now used daily to make some adjustment to the market. Federal Reserve bank sales or purchases of securities on the open market tend to reduce or increase the size of commercial bank reserves. When the Federal Reserve sells securities, the purchasers pay for them with checks drawn on their deposits, thereby reducing the reserves of the banks on which the checks are drawn. The three instruments of control explained above have been conceded to be more effective in preventing inflation in times of high economic activity than in bringing about revival from a ... • 36. Justice Should Not Be A Solution Justice Is Up To Us From the very beginning, people have fought. Rather it be over food, shelter, land, or money, these disagreements have remained ever present in our societies. Where there is disagreement, there must eventually be a solution. Most of the time this solution can come from the individual, or individuals, involved in the disagreement. When necessary, a third, impartial party is to step in and fairly decide what is to happen. Out of all the commotion, no one ever stops to think, What do I want to happen here, or better yet, How do I want this to happen? In a country christened land of the free, home of the proud, it is appropriate to assume that everyone gets a fair trial, that everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law, and that the government does everything in its power to protect the innocent and prosecute the bad guys. But that s not exactly the way things work in America. In the land of the free, home of the proud, the court rooms continue to be influenced by personal prejudice and the poor, the uneducated, and the mentally ill continue to remain unrepresented. In efforts to better the nation, the principle of the nation must be upheld and the values of America must be preserved. Throughout the history of America, prosecution has persisted. From the moment that white men arrived, confrontation over the ownership of other humans has existed. Some saw this ownership as fair, others did not. • 39. Lord Of The Flies Lomb Song Analysis This song depicts how the boys felt when they first arrived at the island. They saw that there were no adults and were excited about all the fun they were planning to have together and without parental supervision. The song paints an island in a positive light saying that it s a paradise, just like the boy s original fantasies. Welcome to the Jungle Guns and Roses This song relates to Lord of the Flies by showing how the boys slowly became more and more like animals. In the beginning, things were great. The boys had fun, swam, and ate fruit under Ralph s leadership. But as Jack s obsession with hunting became unmanageable and he replaced himself as the new leader of the new tribe , the boys became more and more savage. This chaos and destructive behavior is modeled in Welcome to the Jungle by lyrics such as welcome to the jungle, it gets worse here everyday, Ya learn to act like an animal. Mob song Beauty and the Beast The mob song from the movie Beauty and the Beast is very similar to the boys ritualistic hunting dance. They both have a leader Gaston/Jack who urge on the mob to kill the beast. Gaston and Jack understand that fear can perpetuate a mob mentality that is easily controlled through a form of frightened excitement and through the absence of light. That is why both Simon and Piggy both died at the hand of the tribe. The Mob Song uses imagery of darkness and shadow, much like the novel and both a fueled by a frenzied excitement from the mobs. Ralph A character Sketch One of the main characters in Lord of the Flies, Ralph is one of the oldest bigguns on the island. His good looks and confident demeanor quickly makes him the obvious leader to the boys. Although he lacks Piggy s apparent intelligence, Ralph is relatively logical and responsible, with sound judgment and a firm moral scale. But, like the other boys, he can fall into the same entraping instincts that affect the other boys, as demonstrated by his part Simon s murder. Regardless, Ralph remains the most civilized character throughout the novel, save for Piggy. At the end of the novel, it was somewhat tragic because Ralph finally understands that evil lives inside of all the boys. This leaves him depressed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Oppression is defined as, A situation in which people are governed in an unfair and cruel way and prevented from having opportunities and freedom, (dictionary.cambridge.org). Oppression can be caused by many different things. People can feel oppressed because they are being compared to the opposite gender. People can be oppressed being compared to other age groups. And people can feel oppressed when being compared to different races. Women of color feel oppressed because they are constantly being compared to white women, and some may say they do not always have the same privileges as others. Cheever uses the man s journey home as a metaphor for the journey of alcohol. Cheever shows the parallels between the man s journey home and the journey alcohol takes a person in many ways. The main two are the way he feels after each new pool, and the time that lapses on his journey. The first way Cheever uses to show the parallels, is the way the main character feels after each pool. The man, in the beginning, is strong and energetic, feels good about his life, and is looked up to by his friends. The man thinks of himself as a legendary figure (Cheever, Pg1). As if there was nothing he could not do. As his journey progresses he changes. Physically, he gets weaker, and is unable to pull himself out of the pool without the use of the pool ladder and is unwilling to dive into the pool, as before. He goes from being warm to being chilled to the bone. The man would also start feeling bad if he did not drink.
