Opportunities
What creative opportunities can you see in this project? How could you challenge yourself creatively in
this project? You can refer to your previous experience here.
Most of the tasks that we have been presented with in this project have not been done so far on this
course so will be a challenge in itself. As for creatively pushing myself, I could push myself to make a more
creative and more rounded final product. In previous projects, I have been quick to say that my products
are finished and, at first, maybe haven’t got to a final product I’m entirely happy with. For example, in
recipe cards, I thought my product was finished and couldn’t be improved, however, when I analysed it, I
could add a lot more, therefore wasting time on not pushing myself to keep producing improved versions
of the product. To avoid this, I will keep working and evaluating the product in various stages, while I
push myself to keep improving the product and getting a final product that I’m happy with at the end.
What technical opportunities for development are available in this project? What technical challenges
could you set yourself? You can refer to your previous experience here.
Due to one of the tasks been a web banner and another been the packaging of a product, I will need to
use software that I’m either inexperienced in or haven’t used before. This will be a technical opportunity
to develop my skills on software such as Photoshop and Indesign. I am familiar with Photoshop and most
of its tools, but the packaging and web banner may involve tools that are unfamiliar to me, this is a
technical challenge that I’m setting myself. As for indesign, I have only used it in one previous task and I’m
pretty unfamiliar with the technical side of this software. Due to me using it for layouts, I only used the
text and crop buttons. For this project, I might be required to alter layouts using align tools and various
other editing tools. For that reason, this is one technical challenge I foresee in this project.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a professional context? Consider
the requirements for different job roles.
The first skill we are developing in this project is researching. We are picking various companies and
advertisements and analysing how they are good and what makes a good product and advert in this
particular market. This would help in a professional context by helping us identify key characteristics in
products and adverts that can be universally found in most markets or niche markets such as this one. A
researcher is required to have a look at existing products, see what works, see what doesn’t and presents
his findings back to the design and manufacturing team to try and create a product that will sell well in
the correct market. In essence, this job is fundamental to the success of a product and therefore a
company. Another skill that you can develop here is your initial design work. Learning how to use various
tools in design software is key because the software has been used in this and previous projects will be
the software used in a professional scenario.
What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give you? Which final product
type interests you the most and why?
This project requires us to use different platforms of media. For example, the TV advertisement will be
the foundations for a broadcast piece, the web banner is a template for an e-media piece and the initial
advertisement is a print piece. As for the packaging of the product, when designed, it could be used for
any of the media forms mentioned. The prospect of making products for all the media platforms, an idea
that hasn’t been done yet on this course, is a challenge. In my opinion, the packaging of the product
interests me the most out of all the tasks, due to it been universal and can potentially be used for all
three media platforms. As well as this, it interests me most because it’s the most important task in the
project. Like in industry and on a professional context, if you get the packaging wrong, the advertisement
will be a disaster because the consumers have already made their minds up about the product, due to the
look of it.
