This project provides opportunities for creative and technical challenges. Creatively, the student can challenge themselves by incorporating a can of Irn Bru into famous Scottish historical moments. Technically, the student aims to learn new Photoshop techniques like filters. The skills developed, such as problem solving and time management, translate well to professional roles like graphic design. The project allows design for different media, and designing the can is most interesting as it requires accounting for curvature.

What creative opportunities can you see in this project? How could you challenge yourself

This project gives me the opportunity to try new techniques to further my skill level on
PhotoShop. It will be a creative challenge to design a successful advert that incorporates
humour as well as professionalism. I will need to develop if I am going to deign a successful
advert, as their will be lots of example of editing the theme of Irn Bru into famous Scottish
moments such as: Braveheart, Chris Hoy’s Olympic triumph and Sean Connery as James Bond.
What technical opportunities for development are available in this project? What technical
challenges could you set yourself? You can refer to your previous experience here.
To challenge myself technically I will look to try new techniques that I haven’t on previous
projects. I may try using many of the different filter options that I haven’t previously used such
as: blur, distort, sharpen and pixelate. Not only is incorporating the can of Irn Bru into the
image of famous Scottish historical moments, a creative challenge, but it is also a technical one
too.
How could the skills you are using and developing here be useful in a professional context?
Consider the requirements for different job roles.
In a professional context, this can design project encompasses many skill factors that are
relevant in a professional workplace. I will be problem solving, adapting to new ideas, whilst
working to a schedule which is an example of time management and working to a deadline
which is needed in all workplaces. Regarding specific workplaces that use a similar skill set to
this project, these include: graphic designer, mac operator and a page setter.
What opportunities for designing for different media does this project give you? Which final
product type interests you the most and why?
I will have the opportunity to design for three different media types for this project. I will be
designing a poster, web banner and an drink can. The product that gives me the most interest
in designing is the can. This is because the poster and web banner are fairly similar in that they
are both flat deigns, where as the can is curved to look more realistic.
