The document outlines plans for a poster design. It discusses choosing simple sans serif fonts for readability. Potential color choices are considered, including lighter blues that appeal to all demographics or incorporating the logo's blue. Text amount is debated - too much bores readers but some information is needed to explain the charity's work and goals. Mockups show main copy over or within the logo with social media/website details. The final design may differ from these initial concepts.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Outline of final poster idea
Task 8 (production – poster)
Patrick Gouldsbrough
2. Font
While in my planning documentation, I stated I would use a combination of fonts which may extend to 3, I have experimented with a lot
of fonts over the course of the planning and development stages and have come to the conclusion tat simple fonts will be the best way
to continue in this project. While the stylised and cartoon fonts bring an element of creativity and quality to the product, the sans and
sans serif fontal combination that I am now going to use is easy to read and is clear for all demographic types.
Despite me using sylised fonts for the logo design in a previous task, I believed that emulating this feature on this product wouldn’t
benefit it in any way and would detract from the key information trying to be communicated to the consumer of this product. Even
though I need to think of the font I will use for this design, I have narrowed it down considerably and believe I have made the correct
choice for my poster layout. A combination of serif and sans serif allows the reader to clearly read the copy and the design elements on
the page, while ensuring that it’s still creative enough to entice a younger demographic and one that prefers a more stylised and modern
feel.
On the other hand, I may have cut the font types down, I still need to decide on the many fonts that exist in the serif and sans serif
categories and doing this will take extensive experimentation, time and effort so when initially short listing fonts, I must ensure that even
if I am unsure on the font and might not have it on a final design, it must be considered for the development stages, due to fonts
sometimes looking better when on the page layout. This of course does not mean that I will shortlist fonts that are not suitable for my
design; after going through many design projects, I have an eye for finding fonts that will match other elements on my page and unlike
some projects, I am trying to avoid getting a very definite idea of different elements on my layout too early. This will ensure that I can
develop my product and have many versions because I haven’t thought about a definite idea which is a good thing because sometimes
my development work has lacked at points and I had to alter some features during the production process and then state it in the
evaluation. While my development work was never short or unclear, I just wanted to make sure that I thought of every detail in this
project as I went along and not before the production stage (experimentation with elements helps this process).

These are just a few fonts
that I have collated from
Da Font to try and
establish which font I will
use for my layout. Further
experimentation will be
needed, as well as another
search of Da font for
additional fonts.
3. Colour
Throughout this project, I have been thinking of a colour for my various products I will have to make in this task and others. This can be
seen in planning documentation for other tasks and especially the presentation that accompanies this one (campaign poster.ppt). In this
presentation, all design decisions, such as: colour, font, copy and image have been discussed at length and displayed alongside. While in
this presentation, I consider all the colours that I could use to entice a certain demographic is the focus and no mass market colours are
considered in this part. However, like most products I have produced in similar projects, I have always tried to design mass market
products, unless stated. For this reason, I will have to consider a range of mass market colours that will work with different fonts and
colours on my poster.
On my previous presentation, this is the colour choices I narrowed it down to, due to the
different demographical choices I could have made at this point. With a various selection of
blue, the male demographic column looked bland but would appeal to the target audience
(should I make a product for a male focused group). An exception to this would be the lightest
blue on that column (top) that would appeal to all demographics and would fit in with my logo
colouration as well (continuation of a theme and familiarity of products from this company is
a main concern and this colour feature will allow this to happen). On the other hand, using a
colour that is near to my logo colours could lead to a blending of elements on the layout
which is a disadvantage when constructing a poster, which has the main purpose to inform
and get the consumers attention; a product with all the same colours will not do this.
The female orientated colours were more restrained and toned down compared to the male
ones, despite the blue and the purple looking a bit dark and bland in colouration. However,
the pink and orange colours included on this column fit in with a female demographic and if
used, will successfully target a female demographic.
As past projects have proved, younger demographics respond more effectively to brighter and
bolder colours, which I tried to think back and emulate colours I had used in the past to
try and appeal to this particular target audience. With some colours working better than
others in extensive experimentation, I selected the four that are in the column. After selecting
them though, a few of the colours didn’t translate well on a Photoshop format in pre-
production planning. The orange and the Red were the most effective, with the Turquoise and
Green not pairing well with many text colours (I wanted to try and select a colour that pairs
with as many colours as possible, due to the fact that I don’t know what font I will choose for
this product yet).
After analysing my options for
colouration on this product, I have
decided that I may have to select a
more restrained colour like white or
black and then contrast it with the
one I don’t select as a secondary
colour for my design. I will do this
while adding blue elements to fit in
with my logo design from the
previous task. However, just in case
this is not as effective as first thought
when I start to experiment, I haven’t
ruled out using an image as the
background for my poster; sometimes
they can look effective but the
disadvantage is that sometimes you
can’t read all the text if you put an
image behind, due to the fact that the
image has many colours on it, not just
4. Copy
Before the product can be made, I have to make a decision that will mold this task more than any other; what text, if any, will feature on
the layout? The decision about if there will be text or not might not be relevant but the decision of how much copy to put on the poster
is a big one to male at this stage of the project and could make the difference between a strong and effective piece and a ineffective,
simple piece. Conventionally, consumers from all demographics don’t like reading a lot of text on a poster and the ones that feature such
are ranked boring and ineffective and don’t make the desired effect on the audience. For this reason,. I am looking to add as little text as
possible, even if I know that I have to feature a bit of copy to inform the audience about what SAS have done and what their plans are in
the future.
In previous projects, I have kept layouts on posters relatively clean and clear in terms of copy. However, for this design I feel I may have
to add a bit more information to the poster and tell the consumer about the company a bit, due to the fact that in the previous projects,
we had accompanying informative pieces, where as in this one, the logo or merchandise is not informative and the membership form
only features relevant payment pieces and direct debit information and whatever I decide to add when I get on to the task (I know that it
states that these pieces of information need to be on the membership form from the specification/brief we were given).
In addition, I believe that the right way to go about the copy on the poster piece is to add key information only. However, I think I may
write a full paragraph and then exclude the pieces that are minor and allow the piece to look clean and concise in nature. The pieces that
I think I have to add are:
•Contact information (Telephone/Address/Website)
•What the charity have achieved
•What their goals are
•A rhetorical question to get the consumer thinking (optional)
•Emotive lines
•Facts and figures
•Statistics
•Social media presence of SAS
•Famous supporters of SAS
*All these options are optional and I know I can’t include them all but any of these ideas that I haven’t used for my poster could
potentially be used on my membership form.
