Lake Forsyth Case Study
Identification of impacting activities on Lake Forsyth
Lake Forsyth has undergone major natural and anthropogenic changes since European settlement (3).
Following the arrival of European settlers during the 1830s deforestation occurred on a large scale.
Prior to this Lake Forsyth would have been surrounded by Podocarp and Conifer hardwood forests.
The ridges and peaks would have been covered with low scrub and tussock. These changes have
increased nutrient inputs above what would have occurred naturally.
Basaltic soils of the Lake Forsyth catchment are naturally high in inorganic phosphorus and removal
of forest has caused an increase in sediment entering the system than would have naturally.
The increased erosion caused the formation ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This included quantifying the water flow into the lake under dry summer conditions for 2011/2012.
The aim of this research project was to gather information on the inputs into the lake, then use this
information to design a phosphorus and sediment budget. The Okana and Okuti were found to be the
dominant inputs (7) shown in figure 4. Below. This study is a good indication of the water budget over
general summer conditions but cannot be extrapolated for the annual water budget. The report also
recommends continuous monitoring of the two river flows the Okana and Okuti for a minimum of one

Finding Inner Happiness In Phil Knight s Shoe Dog
Phil Knight s journey to build the most recognized company, logo, and shoe, was not an easy or short
one. Spending nearly two decades with next to zero equity, on the brink of down fall with one wrong
misstep or investment, Knight leads his team, from being a bunch of nobodies, to the top dog on the
world market. In the memoir Shoe Dog, Knight suggest that, finding inner happiness is one of the
greatest accomplishments in life. Knight, as a 24 year old, fresh out of business school, decides to
travel the world, seeking meaning. His crazy idea back in Stanford comes to mind planning his trip
around the world, how the Japanese shoe market could penetrate the German market, just as how it did
with Cameras. Knight expresses this feeling over

Polonius then, persuade her to leave Hamlet out of her heart, that there will be no love between her
and prince Hamlet. Polonius is being a father and that causes him to be protective of his daughter. He
continues to work his way into stopping daughter Ophelia from loving Hamlet. Polonius comes off as
a dark character, very spiteful towards Hamlet s love. Hamlet comes off as a sincere loving guy in this
scene and his love is shown by the detail Ophelia described to her father. Their love overturns as the
play continues. Hamlet s life becomes complicated as he tries to prove that King Claudius had killed
his father.

Understanding The Wheaton College Culture And Services
Understanding the Wheaton College Culture and Services
Wheaton College is a four year, private liberal arts college with a student body of approximately
1,600. The small size of the campus and student body serve to make Wheaton a close knit and student
centered community. The mission of the institution is to provide a transformative liberal arts education
for intellectually curious students in a collaborative, academically vibrant residential community that
values a diverse world (History and Mission). Wheaton prides itself on its reputation for academic
excellence and fostering a community that supports individual expression and collective
responsibility.

The second part of CORE is the New Student Orientation and Move In. All new students move into
their residence halls in August and participate in activities to acclimate them into the Wheaton
community. CORE August also offers three pre orientation programs to incoming students:
Intercultural, International and Abilities First (New Student Orientation and Move In). Each pre
orientation is designed to give students an opportunity to get acclimated with a new environment,
while meeting members of the college community who will share a common Wheaton experience in
the years to come.
The Abilities 1st! Pre Orientation is designed for students with learning disabilities. Various
workshops are offered for students and their families to ease the transition to college. Workshops
include a writing session, panel discussion, locating classrooms on campus, reviewing a syllabi and
other social activities (Abilities 1st! 2017 Pre Orientation Schedule). Students participating in the
program will also be able to meet individually with the Dean of Accessibility Services, to set up their
accommodations for the Fall semester. While many of the workshops assist students in developing a
better understanding of what to expect in their first year of college, it does not provide much
opportunity for students to develop characteristics and skills that are critical for college persistence.

Biological Weapons Should Not Be Used During War Time
Did you know that biological weapons contain such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and other
microorganisms(ncwiseowl.com). Chemicals weapons is a specialized munition that uses chemicals
formulated to inflict death or harm on humans(ncwiseowl.com). When biological weapons are in use
about 500 million people could die and when chemical weapons are in use anyone in the area could
get hurt/sick(ncwiseowl.com). So the military should not use during war time. Biological/Chemical
weapons are the type of weapons that should not be used in a time of war. When using these weapons
there capable of killing most of the people that are in the area where the weapon has been used. These
weapons are capable of killing thousand possible millions, in other word any living organism that is in
the area. There also the possibility of killing people that aren t even in the war they might just be in
the area. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The weapons could kill ¼ of the population thin the area. So the people can t do anything about the
use of the weapons because they can t control the war. The people just watch their own die or be to
near dead. When the use of the weapons people that weren t in the war can get killed then people can
get involved in a war that isn t theirs. When considering the Good side of the use of the
biological/chemical weapons, you can take out massive amount of people in one go. If you consider a
group of people a threat you can kill most without losing any of you troop or soldiers. You could use
the weapo without the other side knowing that you even used the weapon. You could also use it as a
last resort to kill of the rest of the enemy or the thing you are trying to kill.
My final statement is the biological and chemical weapon should not be used in time of war. Theses
weapons could be unstable and kill many. People that aren t involved in the war could get killed and
no one wants

Should College Tuition Be Free
Imagine having to pay $25,620 just for a college education, research has shown the average bachelor s
degree holder takes 21 years to pay off his or her loans. This leads to the question if college tuition
should be free or not. While some may believe it ought to be others disagree.
People like Arne Duncan believe college tuition should be free. The cost of college should never
discourage anyone from going after a valuable degree. Meanwhile people such as Matt Bruenig
disagree. Making college free for everyone would almost certainly mean giving far more money to
students from richer families than from poorer ones.
To start off, some people strongly concur that college tuition should be free. For example free college
tuition means more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the reasons why people believe that college tuition shouldn t be free is because taxes and fees
will be increased. Many students can afford to pay a considerable amount toward their higher
education. It is wasteful to give them a free ride. Eric Maskin explains. Just because some students can
t pay their college tuition doesn t mean everyone can t therefore there is no need for college tuition to
be free. College loans are often the first major financial dealing that people work with. Paying them
off in a timely manner proves you know how to budget your money, skills people use again and again
when buying cars or houses. Without having to pay for school, that experience won t exist, which
might be trouble down the road for buying that house or car. In reason to college shouldn t be free
because college might not seem as important and private schools may have to be closed. If college
becomes free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and
more students will major in fields with little or no market value. Students may skip class or not try
their hardest of the fact that they don t need to get their cash s worth when they aren t paying for
anything. As enrollment at public schools increases, so do the fees. Either more money would have to
be given to the schools, or they would have to create waitlists. This means that the taxes for education
related purposes might go up, or funding for something else (such as military expenditures). After
consideration some may believe that college tuition shouldn t be

Home is where Hogwarts is. One of the main themes of Harry Potter is Home and we all know the
saying that home is where the heart is, and Harry s and everyone who read the book or saw the movie,
their heart is at Hogwarts. Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry, is a school located in

Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and the Durmstrang are also rendered unplottable. Children with
magic abilities will get a letter by the School via an owl post when they re eleven years old. And if a

Psychological Disorders
Psychological Disorder
July, 20, 2011
Psychological Disorder Paper Psychological disorders are stated to be abnormalities of the mind,
known as mental disorders (Klasco, 2011). Abnormalities of the mind cause persistent behaviors that
affect an individual’s daily function and life (Klasco, 2011). The different types of psychological
disorders include mood disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders
(Klasco, 2011). The causes of these disorders are unknown, but factors that contribute to these
disorders include childhood experiences, chemical imbalances in the brain, illnesses, heredity, stress,
and prenatal exposures (Klasco, 2011). Psychological disorders can be serious and can be life
threatening ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The anxiety (nervousness) of this disorder causes the individual to feel the urgent need to perform
certain routines or rituals (compulsion) (Chakraburtty, 2009). For example, a person who has an
unreasonable germ fear constantly washes their hands (Chakraburtty, 2009). The rituals are performed
in an attempt to prevent or make the obsessive thoughts go away (Chakraburtty, 2009). The rituals that
are performed are temporarily the person will perform the rituals again once his or her obsessive
thoughts return (Chakraburtty, 2009).
Causes of OCD
The exact cause of obsessive compulsive disorder is not clearly understood, however studies have
shown biological and environmental factors playing a role in this disorder (Chakraburtty, 2009).
Billions of nerve cells are contained in the human brain (Chakraburtty, 2009). These nerve cells are
called neurons. The neurons communicate and work together so the body can function normally
(Chakraburtty, 2009). Research has shown how low levels of serotonin can contribute to OCD
(Chakraburtty, 2009). Environmental stressors can also trigger OCD (Chakraburtty, 2009). Different
environmental factors that can contribute to OCD include abuse, illness, death of a loved one, work or
school related problems, changes in living situations, and relationship concerns (Chakraburtty, 2009).

Langston Hughes Inspiration
There are countless times as one grows up when you just stop for a second and reminisce on random
things. These memories serve for a very special purpose as the things you do in life shapes you into
the person you will become. Today, many authors and poets make use of their memories and
experiences in their work as a way to reflect back on their lives, raise awareness, or just simply to tell
a story. As a prominent contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes was an inspirational
poet who highlighted many aspects of the urban life of African Americans through reflections of his
own life and experiences. As a writer, a poet and a prominent activist of the civil rights movement,
Langston Hughes was a man that was not only ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this mindset, Hughes set out to revolutionize poetry and created such expressive and
inspirational work just by reflecting on his own life. He also takes into account with the existing
racism at this time that was against him and anyone of color. By incorporating his life into his work, it
created a voice for those who were not able to speak up and as a result, life met art (The Harlem
Project).
Throughout his works, especially his poetry, Hughes also draws inspiration from music. He describes
the blues as sad funny songs too sad to be funny and too funny to be sad as the songs hold laughter
and pain, hunger and heartache (Poetry Criticism). This point of view is noticeably reflected onto his
poems when some stanzas are in the form of the typical blues song (Poetry Criticism). In other words,
the stanza had two nearly identical lines followed by a third that contrasts the first two and this is seen
in Same in Blues where he uses the repetition of the word baby in the first two lines. In his poetry,
Hughes captures the voices, experience, emotions and spirit of the African Americans during this time.
His poems have also been influenced by the Afro American life essays written by W.E.B. DuBois and
the black vernacular (DiYanni p.700 705). This is shown in Fine Clothes to the Jew, as Hughes
addresses the hardship and struggle of urban African Americans in Harlem who left the deep south in
hopes of achieving their American Dream. However,

My Brothers By F. Scott Fitzgerald
I felt the dread sink like a rock in my stomach. My two brothers, Ryan and Matthew, were on the
opposite end of the spectrum. My mother had been telling us for weeks that we were going up to the
farm that my family owned, but I didn t quite believe her until today. My brothers were given dirt
bikes last Christmas while I was given a ATV. Both of them had been counting down the days until
they were able to finally ride the dirt bikes and that day had come. After everything was packed, I
crammed myself in the van with my brothers and hoped for this trip to end quickly. After two long
hours of traveling with nothing to look at but the passing trees, we finally arrived at the farm. As we
piled out of the car, I looked at the dirt road we came in on and turned to the house. It was one story
and had a red tin roof, surrounded by a large grassy field and then woods beyond that. Twirling
around, I walked into the house and plopped onto the closes bed. As everyone else unpacked, I locked
myself in the room like a petulant child. Eventually my resolve broke and I crept out of the room to
see what everyone else was up to. All of the food had been unpacked and the dirt bikes and ATV had
been taken off of the trailer. Helmets were promptly passed out and my brothers slung their legs over
the bikes and were gone. Not about to be left behind, I jumped on my ATV and I was on their trail.
The trails were newly cleared in the woods and almost running into the trees served as a

A Day At A Beach In The Bahamas
When the sun begins to hide behind the horizon there is only one environment on the planet that
harnesses the power to leave oneself in complete and utter awe. This one of a kind place captures all
of the elements in their perfect and most striking form. The sky bolsters with eloquent colors, the
warm sand caresses your toes, and the soothing waves break with the most perfect noise as to not
break your focus on the sunset; it is just as captivating as a north poles aurora borealis. A certain

One can agree that during the day, the beach can be a noisy place: music, kids, and talkative
individuals can all make a difference in the pleasantness of your beach day. During the day in the
Bahamas it is quite loud due to the numerous tourists in the area who want to party and have a good
time, but at dusk, it stops. Little by little the beach gets less populated with clamorous people and feels
more like your own oasis. You begin to hone in on the sounds: the rave music is now more calming; it
is maybe playing reggae or something else soothing. The seagulls seem to chirp less, and you are
suddenly all alone. As you walk down the beach waiting for the sun to set you feel the softness of the
sand, and look back to see how your feet have been molded to become one with the beach. When the
sun sets and the sky radiates comforting colors, you begin to feel different: the beach resonates the
warmth of the sky through your feet, up into your heart. You look around and see the landscape of the
beach has been made lively by the colors of the sky. The rocks blush from the sky s red tint, and the
palm trees look to be slow dancing in the warming breeze. Your body is captured by good feelings and
is hypnotized by the sunset s effect on this beach. There is still one last element to the whole picture

Self-Esteem In The Ugly Duckling
Self esteem is a huge issue in North American culture, especially within young people. Knowing this
fact, it is not surprising that one of the most well known classic fairy tales, The Ugly Duckling, deals
directly with the very subject. In the story, the ugly duckling goes through a significant inner
transformation based largely on the way the others around him view his appearance. Since he is fully
capable of keeping up and swimming along with his mother and siblings, the ugly duckling is
accepted at first; however his self esteem plummets as others begin attacking and condemning him
based solely on his physical appearance. The transformations from acceptance to extreme prosecution
he faces, along with the eventual acceptance by the flock of swans serves to emphasize that self
esteem is largely influenced by the superficial opinions of those one interacts with, rather than
demonstrations of other skills ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the older duck advises her to just let it lie there since the egg is big and different from the

to discover that he is in fact able to keep up with the rest of the brood. He is my own child and, when
you look closely at him, he s quite handsome... (162) she exclaims, proud to show him off to everyone
now that he s proved himself. Her determination to include and love him continues to be established
once they are in the henyard being confronted by the older aristocratic duck, when she states that he

Innocence In Elizabeth Bowen s The Demon Lover
The Demon Lover, explains a love story from the past that comes back to the protagonist, Mrs.
Drover, which happens to be a fictional character based on the author, Elizabeth Bowen s own life
experience. As the piece describes in detail parts leading up until the shift, when the letter is found, the
reader is left predicting the anonymous person who left it. It is unknown from the shift as to what will
occur, but the reader can assume something may not be good based on the title and the letter itself that
was on the table of her abandoned house. In The Demon Lover, Bowen wrote about a woman who is

which uses modern language rather than conventional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In The Demon Lover, Bowen uses modern and feminist ideas to draw the reader into a deeper
understanding of the piece adding detail, such as imagery and descriptions of the Blitz and the
flashback which lets the reader understand her past romance. Shifts in the story occur as she narrows
down possibilities as to how the letter arrived inside her home. Mrs. Drover remembers her ex fiancé s
promise, I shall be with you, he said, sooner or later. You won t forget that, which leads to her, later
on, talking to herself after his death saying that, he was never kind to me, not really. I don t remember
him kind at all (Bowen, 1332 1335). At the end of the short story, Mrs. Drover was completely in awe
of what she had saw in the cab, being that it was K., Mrs. Drover s mouth hung open for some seconds
before she could issue her first scream, which explains that she did not expect the driver to be her ex

Similarities Between King Jr And Malcolm X
The King Stands Tall The black civil rights movement struggle of the 1960s was a long and sometimes
bloody battle for the rights of African Americans to be recognized as equal to their white counterparts.
The civil rights movement had many organizations that were led by prominent figures whose methods
in fighting for their rights differed. Amongst the most famous and successful contributors are Martin
Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. This paper will examine these two individuals methods and determine
which of their approaches was the most effective towards gaining equality.
Malcolm X was a civil rights leader who advocated for the use of violence when it came to fighting
for equal rights of his people. His most famous quote was whatever means necessary which meant that
a person could do whatever he wanted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Martin grew up in a middle class family which upheld Christian values. The fairly peaceful
environment and Christian values which advocate for turning the other cheek meant that King had the
mind of a nonviolent person, and this was demonstrated throughout his life. For example, when his
house was bombed he did not react violently but instead called for empathy and understanding for the
perpetrators of these actions towards him and other people from the African American community.[1]
Occasionally, one develops a conviction so precious and meaningful that he will stand on it till the
end[2].
So which of the above leaders and methods had the greatest impact in the push for equal rights for
African Americans? Although Malcolm X had a great influence on the outcome of the civil rights
movement, he later renounced his violent ways after a visit to the Middle East and started advocating
for nonviolent activism. Even though he had argued against King s nonviolent methods, he was finally

The Construction Of The Church
As Breuer s career progressed, so did his style and the commissions. His work at the UNESCO
Headquarter had finally given him a strong name outside of the residential realm. At the beginning of
the 1950s the brethren at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville, MN decided
it was time to expand their campus. For the project, they decided to interview a series of architectural
stars at the time, such as Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra, Pietro Belluschi, Barry Byrne, Eero
Saarinen, and Marcel Breuer. In the end, they chose Breuer for his personality, modesty, honesty,
listening skills, and for the fact that he took their needs and wishes seriously.15 The construction of
the campus started in 1953 with the addition of a new dormitory wing for the monks. In addition to the
church and monk dormitory, Breuer would eventually go on to design two student dormitories, a
library, and a natural science research department. Construction of the church began in 1958.
As if his proposed design of the church building wasn t radicle enough, Breuer ended up adding on a
98 foot trapezoidal bell banner to the front of the church. (Fig. 6) The bell tower holds five bells that

Absolute Monarchies Essay
Amanda Dwyer
Mr. Asher
Modern European History W5
29 January 2016
Absolute Monarchies The concept of absolute power was established in the seventeenth century and
was prominent in Europe and Russia. Absolute power enabled kings and queens to have complete
authority and power over their people. The kings and queens believed that through divine right, God
gave them their power to rule over their country, hence their power was unconditional. The idea of
absolute monarchy was a solution to the problem of an unorganized society. When absolute
monarchies were established they began to spread across Europe and Russia. The first and most
influential absolutist was King Louis XIV of France. The absolute monarchy of France was so

Peter made more changes that improved the country, although this meant sharing his power. Peter
reduced the power of the nobility but created a senate to administer to the state, thus making his
absolute power significantly weaker that King Louis . Peter greatly improves Russian finances and
forces landholders to serve in the military which makes it stronger. He uses his power by also forcing
Western traditions into Russian society and this greatly affects the lives of all Russians. This brings an
end to the remote traditions that the Russians were still practicing since the reign of Ivan IV The
Terrible or Terrifying , who was also an absolutist in Russia from 1547 1584. His power was instilled
into the Russian people. He was ruthless and acquired large amounts of land which expanded Russian
boarders. Although intelligent, he was believed to have been mentally ill since he violently killed his
heir to the throne. His absolutism was terrifying, but successful in a bad way. In Poland, Augustus The
Strong has very little absolute power. He was a very unsuccessful leader having provoked a war with
Sweden which ultimately caused the Polish kingdom to split apart. This began the decline of Poland as

Soviet Submarines in Red Star Rogue by Kenneth Sewell
The novel Red Star Rogue is a novel about a particular submarine that served in the Soviet Pacific
Fleet during the Cold War. The book follows the Golf Class submarine K 129 on her final mission
which occurred in the spring of 1968. K 129 was a Soviet ballistic missile submarine whose purpose
was to launch nuclear weapons at the United States in case of the commencement of hostilities
between the two superpowers. The author Kenneth Sewell, who is a former submarine officer
(Hutchinson) does an outstanding job of not only describing the overall picture, but also breaking
down not only the submarine, but also the men who served on her final mission. He provides personal
information about everyone from the commanding officer all the way ... Show more content on

Another strange occurrence is that 15 extra sailors boarded shortly before departure. This was rare in
that the crew of 83 men was already at full muster. The submarine set sail, and things appeared to be
going smoothly. The submarine is heading to its assigned patrol area in the central Pacific. Suddenly,
on March 1st, after a week at sea, the first indication that something is amiss aboard the submarine
comes... (77) K 129 failed to send its regularly scheduled message to fleet headquarters. Four days
later, on March 5th, another signal that something is wrong on board. The submarine instead of
slowing down to begin the usual silent patrolling in the mission, K 129 keeps sailing towards Pearl
Harbor. (78) After two weeks at sea, the submarine surfaces and then proceeds to attempt a nuclear
missile launch at Pearl Harbor. The author points out that what exactly happened will never be known
unless Russian files are declassified and the CIA release what documents they recovered from the
submarine. Although Mr. Sewell cannot provide a first hand account, he can relate with a fair degree
of certainty what happened based on his experience as a submariner and his experience in dealing with
the Soviet navy. Also with the use of recently declassified documents, Mr. Sewell can provide more
accurate descriptions of what possibly happened then anyone before. The last section of the book is
something that thrill writers like Tom Clancy or

Technology And The Security Of The Public Confidence
Introduction
Imagine going about your weekly errands, making purchases like you normally would when you hand
the cashier your card for payment and it declines. You call the bank only to find out that your account
has been drained of all its funds. This experience leaves you confused, who, how and why has this
happened, and for the most part the answers do not come as quickly as you would, like or even at all.
This issue plays out day after day for thousands of consumers as merchant data breaches and
compromises have left millions of consumer information exposed. These recent compromises in
merchant systems and cyber attacks have exposed a deficiency in the security used to protect the
public. This largely in part to outdated technology and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hackers use those footholds to crawl through corporate networks until they gain access to the in
store cash register systems. From there, criminals collect payment card data off the cash register
systems and send it back to their servers abroad . (Perloth, N. (2014, August 22, P6). This has led to
fall out both from the public as well as industries scrambling to fix the situation before it gets any
worse.
The recent compromise of Target has exposed a more underlying issue of merchant s inability to
monitor and secure the payment systems and the databases that store consumer card information.
When it comes to the technology in place that monitors and secure customer information, there are no
active monitoring of the systems. There will need to be an overhaul of the current technology in place
by these organizations, if they hope to combat fraud and protect consumers from data breaches and
merchant compromises. (Heun, D. (2013).
Fall Out From Data Breaches
Cyber Attacks have forced industries to assess many areas of security as well as policies and
procedures currently in place that protect sensitive information. Companies have lost billions of
dollars as part these breaches, as they are forced to reimburse consumers for transactions and exposure
of their identities. A report by the

This requires the person to be also engaged in the moment with sound decision making as a response

Chicago Carl Sandburg Analysis
Carl Sandburg s Chicago is describing a mental image: a flourishing city. Chicago is a new residence
for citizens; it was only seventy years old when this poem was published. The poem gives us plenty of
imagery in it: the city being a young man, the city being a hard working man, and the city being a man
with many supporters. First, the city is a young man. With Chicago being a fresh city imperfection can
occur. A young man would not know how to properly punish women giving themselves to grown men
for money, would not know where to place murderers, and would not know how to provide a shelter
or food for homeless families. A man has to go through several obstacles before reaching his ultimate
goal of what he should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All the jobs listed in the poem, Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player of Railroads, and
Nations Freight Handler (lns. 1 3) require you to be virile workers. The man has to build, demolish, re
build, and plan. With this building came new jobs for more diligent men. Building the railroads come
into place and the city finally becomes the prosperous place every man had strived for it to be. No one
could make fun of the city because it would become even better than it was. Every day the city would
become bigger and better. Lastly, the city is a man with many supporters. The man was standing
strong and the residents were praising him. They were so happy to be part of something so special
with Chicago becoming successful. According to Sean Robisch, Chicago was piling job on job. They
loved how the man had created countless of jobs inside the new buildings. Bragging and laughing that
under his wrist is the pulse, and under his ribs the heart of the people, Laughing! (lns. 27 28) Without
the people living in the city and wanting it to improve, the city would have never thrived. It needed
everyone to play a role of supporting Chicago. In conclusion Carl Sandburg had a vision of making
Chicago a living man. He wanted to make readers think of the city has something more. Carl

framework for semantic information management and retrieval is presented. It contains three coherent
components, namely multimedia semantic representation, multimedia concept classification and
summarization, and multimedia temporal semantics analysis and ensemble learning. These three
components are seamlessly integrated and act as a coherent entity to provide essential functionalities
in the proposed information management and retrieval framework. More specifically: egin{itemize}
item A novel correlation based feature analysis method is presented to derive HCFGs for multimedia
semantic retrieval on mobile devices. The proposed framework explores the mutual information from
multiple modalities by performing correlation analysis for each feature pair and separating the original
feature set into different HCFGs by using the affinity propagation algorithm at the feature level. Then,
a novel fusion scheme is proposed to fuse the testing scores from selected HCFGs to obtain optimal
performance. Finally, an iPad application is developed based on our proposed system with a user

Chesapeake Colonies Vs New England Colonies Dbq Essay
Although the Massachusetts (New England) and the Chesapeake (Virgina, Maryland) region colonies
were both ruled and settled by the English, as time progressed, there are some blatant major and minor
differences that are apparent between the time period of 1607 and 1700. This caused the two regions
to foster colonies that evolved into two distinct societies by 1700. The differences between the two
colonies can be represented through their differing geographic, economic, political, religious, and
social views.
By 1700, the economics of both colonies were quite different. Virginia was dependent upon a singular
cash crop known as tobacco, while the Massachusetts colonies had a diverse economic system going
on that was dependent upon trade, ship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Virginia developed a society in which the aristocratic planters were at the top of the social ladder, then
farmers, then indentured servants and slaves. In comparison, Massachusetts had much more equality
in their social ladders, with the elect being their highest influential and powerful group. Virginia was
focused on man who had nothing but their freedom, and Massachusetts settlers focused lives around
their friends and families. These differences between the two colonies are justified when looking at the
two different Ship Manifests given in Document 2 and 3. In The Ship s List of Emigrants Bound for
New England, the people who are coming to Massachusetts are large families. (Document 2).
However in the Ship s List for Emigrants Bound for Virginia, there are many more young men

reasons for establishment. Puritans developed their society around the church, and John Winthrop

however, they were more concerned about making money than having everyone be equal, and thus

amateur, Mt. Stone s experience in the area of human interactions shown through in every part of the
movie. But let me say that the movie was of course not perfect. The main character of Paid in Full,

Persuasive Essay On The Declaration Of Independence
A treasure that we should continually use for our decisions on the new challenges we face. (Esposito)
Frank J. Esposito echos the purpose of The Declaration of Independence(DOI)in this new era and how
it should be implemented in a modern government. The DOI is the most influential piece of writing
that has ever come to be. It served it s purpose in 1777 by uniting the colonists against Great Britain in
a bold declaration of independence. This persuasive essay was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited
by important figures, which are now known as the founding fathers. Not only, is the DOI an important
part of history, but it has also become the model for many other persuasive writings. Thomas Jefferson
used techniques like siding with the acrimonious reader, considering the historical precedent and the
conceding of a point, to create a compelling argument to persuade the reader s of The Declaration of
Independence. Thomas Jefferson used persuasion with the acrimonious reader by siding and
understanding the opposing view of The Declaration of Independence. To comprehend why this
technique was so effective, there should be an understanding of what is meant by an acrimonious
reader. An acrimonious reader is one who will not agree with the author s writing. Jefferson reaches
the acrimonious reader by siding, with the purpose to, declare the causes which impel them to the
separation. Jefferson wants the disagreeing side to question their opposing beliefs, all this by
presenting evidence, which is unarguable and cannot be set aside. Essentially, it become a
demonstration that the author is considering the opposing view and understands that the opposite is a
valid argument. If I am charged with microscopic views, I shall treat the charge as captious, unless its
author is able to show, that a different lens would lead to different conclusions. (Droit and Richard)
Both Droit and Seldon, when criticising the DOI, understood that there must be an understanding of
the arguments of both sides in order for persuasion to take place. If a writer s argument is one sided,
then it becomes impossible to hook the acrimonious reader, who serves as the target for persuasion.
Persuasion only works if the reader keeps reading,

Purpose Of Art And Cubism
Art is a general term for the expression of ideas. There are various forms of art, ranging from painting
and drawings, to writing, to music, as well as theatre. Through each of these art forms, they have a
purpose of expressing concerns the artists face as well as world issues. Art is important as it helps
people improve themselves (Armstrong, 2013). Defining the purpose of art is personal and unique to
each individual. From the Renaissance ages art was a reflection of ideas that concerned men s mind.
Michelangelo believed that the truth of any matter existed in nature. It was the job of the artist to seek
the truth within the world and capture it in his art. This way of thinking is what made Michelangelo a
great artist. The quote great artists have the social function of constantly renewing the appearance of
nature in the eyes of the public was mentioned by Apollinaire, a French poet and an art critic (The
Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2017). Apollinaire focused on the subject of modern painting,
during 1880 1918, Cubism. Cubism was considered to be pure art, it was a new way to view reality
(TATE , 2017). It was a major style during the 20th century, a modern twist to depictions of nature.
Pablo Picasso was a major contributor to Cubism art style. Through this new style, it was also a new
interpretation of the world. Many people did not agree with the art style while others found it pleasing
to the eye. Apollinaire argued that cubism painters no longer imitate

The horizon is closely related to the symbol of hopes and dreams. The horizon represents better things
the possibility for change and improvement. The horizon is mentioned in the opening page of the
novel. Ships at a distance have every man s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For
others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the watcher turns his
eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time (1). The author compares the hopes
and dreams of man to a ship on a sea. The ships that come in with the tide are ended dreams and the
ships that stay sailing on the horizon are the ones that are still believed in. That is, until the dreamer
realizes their dreams and leave, being mocked by the time they had wasted. Janie s dream sails on the
horizon for most of her life. She can wish and hope for better things but the reality she lives in is very
different. At the end of the novel, Janie realizes her dream. Her wish is to come in with the tide. So
Hurston writes that Janie pulled in her horizon like a great fishnet (193). The author includes this
quote to show that Janie had realized her dream. She pulled it from the ocean to stop it from sailing
any further. The horizon is Janie s place for dreams, as seen throughout the

Brief Summary Of The Book The Gift By Mauss
In the book The gift , Mauss demonstrates how in all societies, individuals should have the rights and
freedom to choose whether they want to give gifts, however, he notices that giving gifts are
compulsory in most societies. Mauss speaks about a study that explains how giving gifts is done as a
whole rather than between individuals. The gifts were not only materialistic such as possessions and
prosperity but through festivities and events such as rituals and dances. These type of gifts resemble
peace, respect, and honor. Mauss describes this as a system of total services which indicates that the
gifts represented are beneficial to the whole society through reciprocation. In this book, Mauss

Potlatch is to give, to accept and receive, and to reciprocate. If any of the rules are broken, a

Summary Of Butler s Speech Sounds By William Butler
As indicated in the quotation through the little boy s gesture of covering up Rye s mouth when she
spoke, communication is rare in the dystopian society that Butler s Speech Sounds took place in.
Communication was rare due to an illness that caused language impairment which triggered the loss of
skills such as reading and writing, and the loss of other intellectual abilities. It is indicated that due to
the illness, society broke down, as shown by the lack of vehicles and the dissolution of law
enforcement. Towards the beginning of the short story, fights erupt on the bus that Rye is in because of
a disagreement, and with no form of communication available to solve the issue, the men on the bus
resort to their fists. Eventually, the fight is broken up by an individual wearing a Los Angeles Police
Department uniform, who throws gas into the bus to disperse people out of it. After this, the man who
dispersed the crowd motioned to Rye to come with him, prompting the bystanders to group Rye with
him, and they started making gestures accusing Rye of sexually being with the man. It is telling that
even without a voice to speak, the bystanders automatically objectified Rye as a sexual object, and that
objectification could be done with gestures. Historically, the dissolution of a society tends to change
the power structures within it, here Butler shows how the association of women as sexual objects goes
beyond the power structures of society, and how it is inherent in the

Commerce Clause
The United States Constitution bestows to Congress the power to oversee matters involving commerce
with foreign Nations and between the several States while vesting authority to the states to regulate
intrastate commerce (U.S. Const. art. I, § 8, cl. 3). While the Commerce Clause of the Constitution
provides Congress with such federal authority, it does not explicitly provide a meaning or description
of the words interstate commerce. Conflicts concerning what actions and activities constitute interstate
commerce and the perceived limitations on Congress to enact regulatory laws arose before the United
States Supreme Court. Particularly, individuals began to rely on the Supreme Court s rulings to verify
if regulations and laws enacted by Congress pass constitutional muster under the Commerce Clause.
Over time, the Supreme Court s interpretation of what power the Commerce Clause grants to the
congress changed, thereby altering the activities, definition, and the Congress s regulatory power of
interstate commerce. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, the Supreme Court established an expansive meaning of the word commerce, thereby
holding that the Commerce Clause allows Congress to prescribe the rules necessary for carrying out
any commercial exchange intermingled, among, and between states and nations (Gibbons v. Ogden,
1824). Therefore, Chief Justice Marshall far reaching interpretation of the Commerce Clause
permitted Congress to regulate commerce beyond the external boundaries of a State and into the
interior when such commercial activity extends or affects other States (Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824). It is
from the ruling in Gibbons v Ogden (1824) that the federal government s power to regulate commerce
expanded over the states so that rules and actions of the federal government supersedes those of the

Women s Fashion During The Great Depression
Fashion during the Great depression was very different from before because poor people struggled and
used cheap resources as clothing, men s fashion was pointed towards the job they worked, and women
s fashion was practical, yet simple. Poor families had to use their resources to make necessities for
them to live, like clothes. Clothing in poor families were usually made from flour sacks. Women
during the Depression had an elegant style, yet made cheaper and more practical for the work they do
to survive. Men always looked sharp, but their pieces were usually made of cheaper fabrics to save
money because of the depressing loses during the difficult times. There were many styles for different
families, working women, and men with specific needs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Men went overseas and women worked more during WWII after the Depression (Eberhardt). Clothes
for men was a lot more fashionable than it was in the 20 s, unlike women (Tucker). Although, the
colors were like the women s because they were still dark and plain (Sessions). Men were said to be
overdressed for all occasions in this decade (Tucker). It was popular for men too to have very athletic
build and looked good in a v neck coat with very broad shoulders. Men wore plain white button downs
for a regular, everyday outfit, or also for under a suit because men sweat a lot at work (Tucker).
Younger men usually wore sweaters to make their own fashion statement. Everything a man wore was
usually worn with tall, high waisted pants. They were easy and looked good with just about any outfit.
They usually cuffed the bottom of their pants if they wanted to go for a more casual look. Another
fashion statement for a guy was to wear a fedora almost everywhere. Gangsters wore suits with a
monogrammed shirt, and always a fedora. Men just picked up on that style for everyday. Shoes for
men were very simple. They were always nice looking with a toe cap and looked similar to bowling
shoes. They always wore bright socks to make a statement since their outfits and shoes were very
plain. For men in the evening,

Samurai In Japan Essay
One of the most belligerent and successful samurai warlords, Takeda Shingen, grew up and reigned
over the prefecture where I met my wife 400 years later. The Sengoku Warring State, 1467 to 1603,
was not, as aficionados assume, a world of lasting honor. Loyalties exchanged like yen coins.
Ambitious warlords allowed family members to be kidnapped, and murdering young innocents was
commonplace. An entire ruling clan, the Taira, was dispatched when rival children, spared rather than
extinguished, grew and enacted revenge, finishing off Taira youths. My entry into Japan was accident.
I rolled dice on a job teaching English in a Japanese village of 900 in the mountains that hiccuped
west of Tokyo. I met my future partner, Yumiko, and Japan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

She spoke English and French, had lived in three countries, and studied philosophy. When I saw her, I
wanted nothing but her, became alive in that way only animals know. She had four other suitors that
night, one of them a woman. Friends are shocked when I recall the plans I went through to ruin the
competition. Cock blocking, it s called, a parrying of penises. I had never done anything like this
before, but I performed out wooing maneuvers with uncanny success. I stirred one a too strong drink;
watched him cough it back up. I loudly interrupted one s conversation as he was trying to ask Yumiko
for her phone number. I persuaded one away on an extraneous errand. I monopolized Yumiko s time,
danced with her, took shots together. I was aggressive, assertive, territorial. Yumiko was skeptical me

have taken much to persuade her away. Unknown to me was that Yumiko was three years out of a
violent relationship with a controlling Frenchman she d met at an airport. He, among other things, had
raped his own sister when they were younger. She d grown depressed, suicidal, swore off men for
three years, and had only decided, weeks before the party, to begin meeting potential partners. She

Political Corruption And Political Scandals
Corruption has always been present, not just in the government, but in other institutions too. Although
corruption has always existed, it has not been prevalent nearly as much in the past as it is today.
Political corruption is when people at the highest levels of the political system misuse their power in
order to make private gains. Political leaders are figures that are supposed to be looked up to and are
supposed to make moral and rational decisions, not like the kind of decisions that are increasingly
being made today. Considering that most of these political leaders work for the government, and the
government is what this country ultimately depends on, this makes for a terrible situation. A slight bit
of corruption is inevitable, but it does not have to be as extreme as it is today. The Watergate scandal,
the Lewinsky affair, and the corrupt bargain are political scandals that have played a huge role in
defining political corruption in America, and they have had an enormous impact on trust, people, and
elections. Political corruption has undermined the American public s trust in government and politics.
A recent Gallup analysis asked Americans of the confidence level that they have in their nation s
governmental institutions (Gingrich 1). According to the results, a stifling thirty percent was very
confident in the Supreme Court, twenty nine percent felt positively about the Executive Office, and
only seven percent felt assurance in Congress (Gingrich 1). Another

Benefits Of Castor Oil
Natural Benefits of Castor Oil for Skin:
Castor oil is the go to traditional cure for all kinds of skin and hair problems, as well as for a variety of
health issues such as joint pains and upset stomach. Castor oil has been used for as long as since the
ancient Egytians to induce labour.
The oil is extracted from crushing the seeds and has been used as a centuries old remedy use by
traditional healers for inflammation and bacterial infections. In the present time, its anti oxidant
properties have been vastly studied and thus it is more commonly used for its medicinal and
therapeutic benefits.
As a beauty care agent for the skin and hair, it is one of the most widely used ingredients in cosmetics,
soaps, massage oils etc.

The ideal quantity for single use is two to three drops. Be careful to use the castor oil available in
health or medicine stores only, as the industrial variety is not very refined and may cause more
damage to your skin.
Cleansing
According to some dermatologists, Oil Cleansing Method is an effective cleansing, toning,
moisturizing regime that aims to deep clean the pores and get rid of blackhead causing debris. In order
to use castor oil to deep clean pores, mix it with a light oil like apricot oil, olive oil or jojoba oil and
massage it into your facial skin gently and thoroughly.
The good fatty acids in castor oil displace the waxy debris that would otherwise cause blackheads and
acne. After massage, soak a clean washcloth in lukewarm water, wring out the excess water and apply
the hot cloth over your face until it cools.
This will help to remove pore clogging materials better. Be careful not to burn your face. You can
repeat this steaming process a few more times. This way you remove make up, dirt, moisturizers and
excess oil from the pores and deep clean them while ensuring that the skill does not dry out.

Following the arrival of European settlers during the 1830s deforestation occurred on a large scale. Prior to this Lake Forsyth would have been surrounded by Podocarp and Conifer hardwood forests. • 9. Should College Tuition Be Free Imagine having to pay $25,620 just for a college education, research has shown the average bachelor s degree holder takes 21 years to pay off his or her loans. This leads to the question if college tuition should be free or not. While some may believe it ought to be others disagree. People like Arne Duncan believe college tuition should be free. The cost of college should never discourage anyone from going after a valuable degree. Meanwhile people such as Matt Bruenig disagree. Making college free for everyone would almost certainly mean giving far more money to students from richer families than from poorer ones. To start off, some people strongly concur that college tuition should be free. For example free college tuition means more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the reasons why people believe that college tuition shouldn t be free is because taxes and fees will be increased. Many students can afford to pay a considerable amount toward their higher education. It is wasteful to give them a free ride. Eric Maskin explains. Just because some students can t pay their college tuition doesn t mean everyone can t therefore there is no need for college tuition to be free. College loans are often the first major financial dealing that people work with. Paying them off in a timely manner proves you know how to budget your money, skills people use again and again when buying cars or houses. Without having to pay for school, that experience won t exist, which might be trouble down the road for buying that house or car. In reason to college shouldn t be free because college might not seem as important and private schools may have to be closed. If college becomes free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and more students will major in fields with little or no market value. Students may skip class or not try their hardest of the fact that they don t need to get their cash s worth when they aren t paying for anything. As enrollment at public schools increases, so do the fees. Either more money would have to be given to the schools, or they would have to create waitlists. This means that the taxes for education related purposes might go up, or funding for something else (such as military expenditures). After consideration some may believe that college tuition shouldn t be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Psychological Disorders Psychological Disorder July, 20, 2011 Psychological Disorder Paper Psychological disorders are stated to be abnormalities of the mind, known as mental disorders (Klasco, 2011). The different types of psychological disorders include mood disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders (Klasco, 2011). The rituals are performed in an attempt to prevent or make the obsessive thoughts go away (Chakraburtty, 2009). The rituals that are performed are temporarily the person will perform the rituals again once his or her obsessive thoughts return (Chakraburtty, 2009). • 12. Langston Hughes Inspiration There are countless times as one grows up when you just stop for a second and reminisce on random things. These memories serve for a very special purpose as the things you do in life shapes you into the person you will become. Today, many authors and poets make use of their memories and experiences in their work as a way to reflect back on their lives, raise awareness, or just simply to tell a story. As a prominent contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, Langston Hughes was an inspirational poet who highlighted many aspects of the urban life of African Americans through reflections of his own life and experiences. Through this mindset, Hughes set out to revolutionize poetry and created such expressive and inspirational work just by reflecting on his own life. He also takes into account with the existing racism at this time that was against him and anyone of color. By incorporating his life into his work, it created a voice for those who were not able to speak up and as a result, life met art (The Harlem Project). Throughout his works, especially his poetry, Hughes also draws inspiration from music. He describes the blues as sad funny songs too sad to be funny and too funny to be sad as the songs hold laughter and pain, hunger and heartache (Poetry Criticism). This point of view is noticeably reflected onto his poems when some stanzas are in the form of the typical blues song (Poetry Criticism). In other words, the stanza had two nearly identical lines followed by a third that contrasts the first two and this is seen in Same in Blues where he uses the repetition of the word baby in the first two lines. In his poetry, Hughes captures the voices, experience, emotions and spirit of the African Americans during this time. His poems have also been influenced by the Afro American life essays written by W.E.B. DuBois and the black vernacular (DiYanni p.700 705). This is shown in Fine Clothes to the Jew, as Hughes addresses the hardship and struggle of urban African Americans in Harlem who left the deep south in hopes of achieving their American Dream. • 13. My Brothers By F. Scott Fitzgerald I felt the dread sink like a rock in my stomach. My two brothers, Ryan and Matthew, were on the opposite end of the spectrum. My mother had been telling us for weeks that we were going up to the farm that my family owned, but I didn t quite believe her until today. My brothers were given dirt bikes last Christmas while I was given a ATV. Both of them had been counting down the days until they were able to finally ride the dirt bikes and that day had come. After everything was packed, I crammed myself in the van with my brothers and hoped for this trip to end quickly. After two long hours of traveling with nothing to look at but the passing trees, we finally arrived at the farm. As we piled out of the car, I looked at the dirt road we came in on and turned to the house. It was one story and had a red tin roof, surrounded by a large grassy field and then woods beyond that. Twirling around, I walked into the house and plopped onto the closes bed. As everyone else unpacked, I locked myself in the room like a petulant child. Eventually my resolve broke and I crept out of the room to see what everyone else was up to. All of the food had been unpacked and the dirt bikes and ATV had been taken off of the trailer. Helmets were promptly passed out and my brothers slung their legs over the bikes and were gone. Not about to be left behind, I jumped on my ATV and I was on their trail. • 17. Self-Esteem In The Ugly Duckling Self esteem is a huge issue in North American culture, especially within young people. Knowing this fact, it is not surprising that one of the most well known classic fairy tales, The Ugly Duckling, deals directly with the very subject. In the story, the ugly duckling goes through a significant inner transformation based largely on the way the others around him view his appearance. Since he is fully capable of keeping up and swimming along with his mother and siblings, the ugly duckling is accepted at first; however his self esteem plummets as others begin attacking and condemning him based solely on his physical appearance. Similarities Between King Jr And Malcolm X The King Stands Tall The black civil rights movement struggle of the 1960s was a long and sometimes bloody battle for the rights of African Americans to be recognized as equal to their white counterparts. At the beginning of the 1950s the brethren at the Benedictine Abbey of Saint John the Baptist in Collegeville, MN decided it was time to expand their campus. For the project, they decided to interview a series of architectural stars at the time, such as Walter Gropius, Richard Neutra, Pietro Belluschi, Barry Byrne, Eero Saarinen, and Marcel Breuer. With Chicago being a fresh city imperfection can occur. The DOI is the most influential piece of writing that has ever come to be. It served it s purpose in 1777 by uniting the colonists against Great Britain in a bold declaration of independence. This persuasive essay was written by Thomas Jefferson and edited by important figures, which are now known as the founding fathers. Not only, is the DOI an important part of history, but it has also become the model for many other persuasive writings. Thomas Jefferson used techniques like siding with the acrimonious reader, considering the historical precedent and the conceding of a point, to create a compelling argument to persuade the reader s of The Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson used persuasion with the acrimonious reader by siding and understanding the opposing view of The Declaration of Independence. To comprehend why this technique was so effective, there should be an understanding of what is meant by an acrimonious reader. An acrimonious reader is one who will not agree with the author s writing. Jefferson reaches the acrimonious reader by siding, with the purpose to, declare the causes which impel them to the separation. Jefferson wants the disagreeing side to question their opposing beliefs, all this by presenting evidence, which is unarguable and cannot be set aside. Essentially, it become a demonstration that the author is considering the opposing view and understands that the opposite is a valid argument. If I am charged with microscopic views, I shall treat the charge as captious, unless its author is able to show, that a different lens would lead to different conclusions. (Droit and Richard) Both Droit and Seldon, when criticising the DOI, understood that there must be an understanding of the arguments of both sides in order for persuasion to take place. Defining the purpose of art is personal and unique to each individual. From the Renaissance ages art was a reflection of ideas that concerned men s mind. Michelangelo believed that the truth of any matter existed in nature. It was the job of the artist to seek the truth within the world and capture it in his art. This way of thinking is what made Michelangelo a great artist. The quote great artists have the social function of constantly renewing the appearance of nature in the eyes of the public was mentioned by Apollinaire, a French poet and an art critic (The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica, 2017). Apollinaire focused on the subject of modern painting, during 1880 1918, Cubism. Cubism was considered to be pure art, it was a new way to view reality (TATE , 2017). It was a major style during the 20th century, a modern twist to depictions of nature. Pablo Picasso was a major contributor to Cubism art style. Through this new style, it was also a new interpretation of the world. Many people did not agree with the art style while others found it pleasing to the eye. Apollinaire argued that cubism painters no longer imitate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Zora Neale Hurston s writing is full of metaphors that illustrate the complex concepts that are significant in the novel. Hurston s compelling use of these symbols help clarify the deeper meaning of Janie s travels, thoughts, and experiences. The author s tells the story by using copious amounts of symbols, some of which are Janie s hair, the pear tree, and the horizon. The symbol of Janie s hair is a strong recurring symbol that gives off many impressions. Janie s hair has strong effect on almost every character written. The biggest impression her hair gives is a sense of identity and power. The young girl ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The horizon is closely related to the symbol of hopes and dreams. The horizon represents better things the possibility for change and improvement. The horizon is mentioned in the opening page of the novel. Ships at a distance have every man s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time (1). The author compares the hopes and dreams of man to a ship on a sea. The ships that come in with the tide are ended dreams and the ships that stay sailing on the horizon are the ones that are still believed in. That is, until the dreamer realizes their dreams and leave, being mocked by the time they had wasted. Janie s dream sails on the horizon for most of her life. She can wish and hope for better things but the reality she lives in is very different. At the end of the novel, Janie realizes her dream. Her wish is to come in with the tide. So Hurston writes that Janie pulled in her horizon like a great fishnet (193). The author includes this quote to show that Janie had realized her dream. She pulled it from the ocean to stop it from sailing any further. The horizon is Janie s place for dreams, as seen throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Brief Summary Of The Book The Gift By Mauss In the book The gift , Mauss demonstrates how in all societies, individuals should have the rights and freedom to choose whether they want to give gifts, however, he notices that giving gifts are compulsory in most societies. Mauss speaks about a study that explains how giving gifts is done as a whole rather than between individuals. The gifts were not only materialistic such as possessions and prosperity but through festivities and events such as rituals and dances. These type of gifts resemble peace, respect, and honor. Mauss describes this as a system of total services which indicates that the gifts represented are beneficial to the whole society through reciprocation. One of the many terms he mentions, the term kudu which means that a gift must be given and must be reciprocated at an equal value. The three important rules that need to be followed in a Potlatch is to give, to accept and receive, and to reciprocate. If any of the rules are broken, a punishment comes along with it in a form of slavery. Mauss speaks as well about different religions and cultures and about their gift giving. He explains in the law of Hindu that the gift given to an individual is beneficial to their present life and in their next life. • 40. Summary Of Butler s Speech Sounds By William Butler As indicated in the quotation through the little boy s gesture of covering up Rye s mouth when she spoke, communication is rare in the dystopian society that Butler s Speech Sounds took place in. Communication was rare due to an illness that caused language impairment which triggered the loss of skills such as reading and writing, and the loss of other intellectual abilities. It is indicated that due to the illness, society broke down, as shown by the lack of vehicles and the dissolution of law enforcement. Towards the beginning of the short story, fights erupt on the bus that Rye is in because of a disagreement, and with no form of communication available to solve the issue, the men on the bus resort to their fists. Eventually, the fight is broken up by an individual wearing a Los Angeles Police Department uniform, who throws gas into the bus to disperse people out of it. After this, the man who dispersed the crowd motioned to Rye to come with him, prompting the bystanders to group Rye with him, and they started making gestures accusing Rye of sexually being with the man. It is telling that even without a voice to speak, the bystanders automatically objectified Rye as a sexual object, and that objectification could be done with gestures. Historically, the dissolution of a society tends to change the power structures within it, here Butler shows how the association of women as sexual objects goes beyond the power structures of society, and how it is inherent in the ... • 43. Commerce Clause The United States Constitution bestows to Congress the power to oversee matters involving commerce with foreign Nations and between the several States while vesting authority to the states to regulate intrastate commerce (U.S. Const. art. I, § 8, cl. 3). While the Commerce Clause of the Constitution provides Congress with such federal authority, it does not explicitly provide a meaning or description of the words interstate commerce. Conflicts concerning what actions and activities constitute interstate commerce and the perceived limitations on Congress to enact regulatory laws arose before the United States Supreme Court. Particularly, individuals began to rely on the Supreme Court s rulings to verify if regulations and laws enacted by Congress pass constitutional muster under the Commerce Clause. Over time, the Supreme Court s interpretation of what power the Commerce Clause grants to the congress changed, thereby altering the activities, definition, and the Congress s regulatory power of interstate commerce. ... Therefore, Chief Justice Marshall far reaching interpretation of the Commerce Clause permitted Congress to regulate commerce beyond the external boundaries of a State and into the interior when such commercial activity extends or affects other States (Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824). • 47. Political Corruption And Political Scandals Corruption has always been present, not just in the government, but in other institutions too. Although corruption has always existed, it has not been prevalent nearly as much in the past as it is today. Political corruption is when people at the highest levels of the political system misuse their power in order to make private gains. Political leaders are figures that are supposed to be looked up to and are supposed to make moral and rational decisions, not like the kind of decisions that are increasingly being made today. Considering that most of these political leaders work for the government, and the government is what this country ultimately depends on, this makes for a terrible situation. A slight bit of corruption is inevitable, but it does not have to be as extreme as it is today. The Watergate scandal, the Lewinsky affair, and the corrupt bargain are political scandals that have played a huge role in defining political corruption in America, and they have had an enormous impact on trust, people, and elections. Political corruption has undermined the American public s trust in government and politics. A recent Gallup analysis asked Americans of the confidence level that they have in their nation s governmental institutions (Gingrich 1).
