Of Oedipus Rex s Influence On The Number 23
Oedipus Rex s Influence on The Number 23
Julia A. Meade
University of Maine
Oedipus Rex is one of the first tragedies in theatre history to be recorded, and to have survived for
present day society to appreciate. Written by one of three ancient greek playwrights, Sophocles, this
performance has paved the way for many other pieces of work (Brockett Ball, 2014). One such work
from contemporary times, The Number 23, a movie starring Jim Carrey, appears to follow a similar, if
not the same, plot as Oedipus Rex. Both pieces of work start in the middle of the trouble; The play
starts in the middle of a deathly illness that has spread across the kingdom of Thebes, which Oedipus
is ruler of, and the movie starts with Walter reading a book that seems oddly similar to his own life.
Oedipus is tasked with finding out who murdered the previous king, since the god Apollo told Creon,
Oedipus brother in law, that the murderer is the abomination in Thebes that has caused the illness.
Walter becomes obsessed with the main character of the book he received from his wife, whose life
revolves around the number 23. He tasks himself with finding out more about the author of the book,
since he believes the book was somehow written about his own life. Both of these characters become
investigators to find the truth. In Walter s journey he finds more and more details of the book that fit
details in his own life. In the book are characters Fingerling and Isabel whom, both,

I Liked The Feel Of Nudeness Analysis
The Secret Truth to Words
I liked the feel of nudeness (Kidd 134). Every day people use sentences to describe how they re
feeling, to answer questions, including thousands of other reasons. While it may not be apparent,
every word and phrase have a meaning. Each and every simple thing said by humans have their own
stories, their own backgrounds. While some words people speak are bland and unimportant, their
words always express something unique that can be broken into parts to explain the words said as a
whole. Therefore, phrases can be broken down from a grouping of words with little to no meaning, to
single words with many explanations. First, is a very interesting sentence, one with many meanings to
some, and no meaning to others. In the book, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the main
character in the book Lily thinks to herself, I liked the feel of nudeness (134). This quote can be
explained in so many different ways, but the way I interpret it is unique to myself. To me, this quote is
expressing freedom and beauty, and can be connected with ancient Greek art. Nudeness expresses a
person s beauty and freedom. Freedom is the release from the tight chamber of ... Show more content

When one is open and free to what life brings to their plate, it is truly a beautiful trait. As seen in greek
art and in countless of other examples in the world, it is blatant that nudeness is far more than just a
bare human body. It is a symbol for what people on earth work to achieve every day, complete
freedom. Some contradict saying that with too much freedom comes too much pressure, which can
lead to a negative outcome. Yet, what they fail to realize is, when given absolute freedom, one is able
to be live their lives based purly upon what they feel is the right thing for them. In the end, this quote
can be connected with ancient Greek art, and is giving its view on freedom and

Why Are Mayans Important To Today s Society
The Maya have been known as a very important and significant society. There are many resources that
give some information on their society but have you ever really thought about what specific things
make them a significance to today s world? The Maya have made some very significant advancements
in language/numbers, agriculture, and religion. To begin with, the Maya have such a significant impact
on language and writing today. The Maya created and used writing/number systems, as well as their
own language. Both of these are still in use all around the world and are very well developed. For
example, used glyphs, as well as unique number systems that used a combination of bars and dots to
create large numbers, (The Maya Ancient and Modern). The given quote goes further into how
developed these strategies and systems were at that time. These talents of theirs play a very big part in
why they have such a large impact and significance. The Maya also had some good techniques and
strategies for other things like agriculture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They practiced strategies such as draining fields, crop rotation, and house held gardens. Along with
these diverse strategies, they also made sure that nothing was ever wasted and that everything was
done themselves. For example, The Highland Maya grew and harvested the cotton themselves, then
spun and dyed the thread to prepare it for weaving, (Mayan Huipiles). The Maya did have an impact
on these strategies because they are very similar to modern techniques of farming and living as if you
must do it all yourself. As for modern day relations to the Maya, the Maya also had some very
interesting perspectives on religion and

Skilled Immigration Controversy
The discourse on skilled immigration revolves around the controversial H 1B worker visas, the largest
visa program for temporary, skilled immigration to the United States, and the level of the annual cap
of such visas. Proponents pushing to raise the annual visa cap, argue that there exists a shortage of
domestic labor supply in certain industries. Moreover, these workers enable firms to compete globally
by raising their competitiveness, growth, and innovation. Critics of skilled immigration, however,
argue that skilled immigrants are not necessarily skilled, and that the principle use of the H 1B visas is
for firms to minimize their labor costs, which has the effect of undercutting native wages, and
displacing native workers.
The H 1B program grants temporary work visas to workers in specialty occupations, most commonly
in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Firms must pay substantial fees to
apply for a worker, and the worker is tied to the firm for the length of their visa (the initial length
being three years). Law requires that H 1B workers be paid the prevailing wage for the job in the firm
or the geographic region where the person is employed as to discourage worker ... Show more content

The question of whether there is a shortage of skilled labor supply cannot be accurately determined
given the current visa system and the agendas of firms. Since applications of the visas are not accepted
once the cap is reached, there is no exact information on the demand. Furthermore, firms could be
incentivized to hire skilled immigrants to minimize costs rather than the claimed performance
benefits, biasing any data collected. Whether aggregate benefits outweigh the potential losses from the
crowding out of native workers and their lower wages depend on the methodologies

Osteoporosis In Japanese Americans
Osteoporosis
Although there are many diseases that Japanese Americans suffer more from than mainland or
Hawaiian Japanese, Osteoporosis is a disease that Japanese Americans suffer more from than other
ethnic groups. Osteoporosis is a disease where the body looses too much bone proteins or doesn t
make enough which causes the bones to become weak which can be considered also as low bone
mineral density (BMD)(https://www.nof.org/patients/what is osteoporosis). This result can cause
things like hip fractures and shortened height, which are common occurrences in Japanese Americans
as they age. Japanese Americans in addition also experience the lowest BMD which is one of the
reasons they probably have the highest rate of Osteoporosis. In particular, ... Show more content on

Japanese Americans tend to be more work oriented and lead less of a physical lifestyle, resulting in
less movement and strain on the spine and hips. Japanese Americans also tend to be more lactose
intolerant, resulting in calcium deficiency and a lower bone density. Lactose Intolerance also creates a
issue among women, who rely on healthy fats throughout menopause in order to produce efficient
estrogen and conserve bone density. In a study an increase of surgically induced menopause has been
seen in Japanese American women, with a mean age of the menopause seen being now seen at the age
of 51.5 compared to the 55.5 of native Japanese women. (Fujiwara S. et al) which means that their
estrogen levels are depleting faster compared to other ethnicities and subjecting them to a higher risk
of lower bone density and osteoporosis.

Ramps Height
This investigation seeks to determine the distance that a marble can travel after leaving a ramp with
retrospect to the ramps height. This experiment wished to find the relationship between the height of
the ramp and the distance that the marble will travel from the end of the ramp (Diagram 1, value d).
The ramp is positioned on top of a bench with the height of the ramp being the dependent variable.
The reason that this subject is important is because it demonstrates a wide understanding of linear
motion. Secondly, this scenario has some extremely relevant physics components present in many
fields of experience, for example calculating the projectile of an unguided missile, or calculating how
particular objects are going to be affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the experiment is undertaken the distance from the ramp to the landing position of the ball is
recorded (value d in diagram 1). This means that the formula, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 can be used to find
the vertical component, however, (t) time is required for this formula. Using the equation v=dtthe time
can be found. vt=dt(dt=height of the table) t=dv Both the distance (d) and velocity (v) are known so
they can be substituted into the equation to find time (t). Going back to the original equation Xv=
X1+Vvt +12at2 the known values can be added to the equation, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2where X1=
initial position and Vv= initial velocity
∴Xv=12at2(Note X1= 0 and Vv = 0)
This equation now has to be derived to calculate the vertical velocity.
Vv=at
The vertical component therefore has a velocity of the acceleration (gravity = 9.8ms^ 1) multiplied by
the time.
With two sides of a right angle triangle being known a2+b2=c2can be used to find the last velocity. a =

Performance Analysis Of Fso Communication System
Performance Analysis of FSO Communication System: Effects of Fog, Rain and Humidity
Abstract Free Space Optics (FSO) is one of the most promising new access technologies. FSO
provides the transmission of data with unlimited bandwidth. The atmospheric attenuation is caused by
two main factors absorption and scattering. This paper investigates a performance study of free space
optics channel for variable wavelengths 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm at distance range of 1 km. The
simulation reports minimum BER for NRZ OOK modulation technique at different receiver diameters
in presence of fog, rain and humidity attenuation. The results shows how to improve the system to
achieve minimum BER and maximize the power received that can be detect at distance 1 km.
Keywords free space optics (FSO); fog; rain; humidity. Introduction
FSO communication, also termed as optical wireless, is an optical communication technology that
uses line of sight communication system and tries to achieve the need for high bandwidth over short
distances [1]. There are various atmospheric attenuation effects on FSO link such as fog, rain, snow,
humidity and temperature [2]. The majority of FSO systems are using 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm
[3 5] wavelengths. Research studies have shown that fog is the most important factor because the size
of fog particles is comparable to the transmission wavelength of optical and near infrared wave [6].
This paper proposes model for the attenuation due to fog, rain,

The Departed Comparison
The movies Infernal Affairs (2002, directed by Andrew Lau) and The Departed (2006, directed by
Martin Scorsese), the latter being an adaptation of the former, are surprisingly similar films overall.
The discrepancies between the two motion pictures are only easily seen when analyzing the difference
in the narrative, plot and cinematography used within each film, while taking into account the
influences of the differing cultures that the two films were created in (i.e. location of creation). Due to
the differing locales: China (Hong Kong) for Infernal Affairs and the United States (Boston) for The
Departed, the unique and different cultures influenced the modification that took place in the
adaptation from the former into the latter. The difference ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Romance, as seen in Infernal Affairs and The Departed, are highly different. In the former, it is barely
touched at all and most love interests are chaste whereas in the latter it is much more explicit.
Throughout The Departed, it is apparent that sexuality goes hand in hand with masculinity: as
expressed by Sullivan mocking the firemen for being gay when the police department loses to a
football game. Most insults and threats invariably involve sexual references unlike Infernal Affairs.
One interesting thing to analyze between the two films, is the psychological stress that is shown and
acted out by the characters in the films. While The Departed is a longer film, it is slightly less
psychologically nuanced than Infernal Affairs. Sullivan is not shown as truly evil, but his speculations
are never really scrutinized. Costigan is easily seen conflicted, but that stems from his fear of being
discovered and killed. In Infernal Affairs, it is somewhat clear that both Lau and Chen are feeling a
disconnection between their internal and external self, stemming from their involvement in spying.
The borderline between a police officer and a triad member becomes easier to cross. This shows the
influence of culture on the overall film, and the subsequent narrative, plot and use of cinematic

The term balance of payments refers to the accounting record of the country s monetary transaction
with the rest of the world. These transactions include the exports and imports of goods and services of
the country, financial capital and financial transfers. The balance of payment record is a way to allow
countries to recognize potential business partners for trade and to evaluate a country s performance in

Causes of Mexico s balance of payments difficulties prior to Peso devaluation
With the large capital surplus largely arising from foreign investments to support the huge trade
deficits in the Mexican current account, all seemed to go well for the Mexican economy until several
political crises erupted and several macroeconomics mistakes were left exposed in 1994 which
affected foreign investor s confidence.
The year 1994 marks the final year of Carlos Salinas de Gotari s administration in Mexico. In order to
boost the popularity of the party in hope of garnering more votes, Salinas went a high spending
splurge which led to high deficits. Mexico s trade deficit further deteriorated due to trade liberalization
through the participation in North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1992, Organisation for
Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) and World Trade Agreement (WTA) in 1994.
Fuelled by the overvalued peso and trade liberalization, Mexico was importing at a rate much faster
than it could, leading to rising trade deficits. Along with the large spending incurred by the Salinas
administration, the Mexican economy was further burdened by the excessive consumer spending due
to the overvaluation of the peso. The peso was left unchecked as devaluation of the peso would
weaken the Mexican citizens buying power, causing displeasure and thus risking

The Importance Of Environmental Conservation In Colorado
Environmental conservation, particularly waste diversion, is an important social problem for the
reason that it not only affects people but the planet as a whole. The shocking reality is that the United
States produces the greatest amount of waste in the world, while it only makes up five percent of the
overall world population as stated in Recycle Across America (as cited by Worldwatch Institute).
When people think of Colorado, they probably tend to think of its capital Denver, however, when I
think of Colorado, I think of the city Boulder due to its zero waste initiatives. Boulder is leading the
initiative to recycle and reduce waste while Denver is the big city and capital of Colorado and it only
has a diversion rate of nearly twenty percent ( We Are Zero Waste, 2017). This means that less than
twenty percent of used products are composted or recycled while the other eighty plus percent goes to
landfill. Boulder is leading the initiative with a diversion rate of thirty nine percent as of 2015 and has
a company called Eco Cycle and other companies similar which handle recycling and volunteer at
events throughout Colorado to make events a green event ( We Are Zero Waste, 2017). Based on the
Factfinder Census, it is important to note that there are a few key reasons as to why Denver has a
lower waste diversion rate than Boulder. To elaborate, Denver has an estimated 2016 population of
693,060 while Boulder has only an estimated population of 322,226 (United States

The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay
The Domestication of the Last Frontier
In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the Mississippi
River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska. Beyond this thin edge
of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the foothills of the Rocky
Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of mountain ranges, many rich in
silver, gold and other metals. On the far side, plains and deserts were part of this region; here laid the
Last Frontier the Great Plains . For a long time, the region had been called the Great American

By 1890 the frontier had disappeared.
Settlement was spurred by the Homestead Act of 1862, which granted free farms of 64 hectares to
citizens who would occupy and improve the land. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer could
either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it for years, or
by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for the would be
farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880 nearly
22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads.
In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward from
Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the same time, the
Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California, relying heavily on
Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines steadily approached each
other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah. The months of laborious travel
hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days. The continental rail network grew
steadily, and by 1884, four great lines linked the central Mississippi Valley area with the Pacific.
The first great rush of population to the Far West was drawn to the mountainous regions, where gold
was found in California in 1848, in Colorado

future generations of kids to enjoy. This paper covers the main reasons why I wanted swimming to be

However Murden (2012) argues that such a relationship would be rewarding to both of them. When
CEO needs mentoring, the chair would offer valuable counsel. Robert (2002, p.493) states that the
chairman positively contributes to CEO performance. The chair being the performance evaluator of
the CEO, the trust and respect between them cannot be overemphasized (Kiel 2012, p. 233). Likewise
CEO would be genuinely disclosing the important matters to the chair, without last hour surprises. It is
the responsibility of chair to get to know from the CEO, of current transactions on matters concerned
to the board (Kiel 2012, p.233). A harmonious relationship between chairman and CEO can help an
organization to resolve even severe issues (Kakabadse et al. 2006, p.147) (Murden 2012). On the
contrary, if their relationship turns bitter with frequent clashes, it may lead to poor board decisions
(Conger 2009, p.53). Absence of a sound relationship

Packaging And Labelling Are Two Important Aspects Of...
Introduction:
Packaging and Labelling are two very important aspects of modern marketing, which puts a
significant effect on the success of the business. Labelling is considered as a wrapper or container of
the product whereas a part of the printed or written note that is put on the package is considered as the
label.
Colourful paper labels, the first form of commercial art was first brought forward by a European artist.
It is both used as a product identifier and an eye catcher for the consumers since 1880.This art, which
later became a profession of lithography, was used on packaging cases of fruits, boxes of cigars and on
cans of vegetables. The world s first self adhesive labels was established by an entrepreneur,
R.Stanton Avery and it turned to a very profitable business.
In the recent days, all sorts of companies takes huge interest in packaging and labelling their products,
keeping their targeted customers on mind and these have now become a very successful business
entity. Nevertheless, these have to be continuously innovated and recreated to keep the mass
consumers attracted towards the product. Packaging and labelling help marketing the product in a
numerous ways and thus through these the companies can reach the targeted consumers, ultimately
making a strong place in the retail market. Still, the Australian market of packaging and labelling is
comparatively minor in terms of international standards.

Kreyòl, the language of my birthplace, is a mystery. this example shows that he wants to inform the
reader that he is a true American, not a Haitian and that he only and will speak English. Overall all of
these stories conclude that language is a big challenge immigrants face because they have to deal with
a form of communication. In the U.S immigrants struggle with adapting to English. Another important
topic immigrants struggle with is adapting to through culture. Maya in (MFC) struggles with this
because when she wants to fit in like an American such as, hanging with boys, not having many

My Happy Life
I was always such a happy kid growing up. Not only was I extremely happy, I had no care in the world
other than my mother making me take a bath. If she did not make me take a bath that day then I would
be ecstatic. Who knew that in only a few years, my life would be turned upside down. It all started
pretty much the very first day of 6th grade when all my happiness and care free attitude went away.
This I would not be who I am today without this experience. It all started in 6th grade. I began taking
showers every day, doing my hair, makeup, and trying to impress guys. Middle school was already a
huge change from who I came from. I never cared about what I wore, what I looked like, or about
guys, I used to cringe at the thought of marrying someone. That all changed when l I got to middle
school. I am not sure why I changed so much, but I know it was a difficult time. Including the already
struggle of self image I had, around the middle of 6th grade my parents randomly got a divorce. I
never saw them fight once, so it was a huge surprise to me. I was devastated; I remember vividly them
telling me once that they would never get a divorce. All I could think about is, how could they lie to
me? During the divorce I had no voice, my sister said and chose everything for me. I was too scared to
tell my mom that I did not want to sleep on an air mattress for months, that I did not want to leave my
dad alone. With no confidence or even any knowledge that I could say and do what I

Essay on Sociological Perspectives to Understand Society
WITH REFERENCE TO THE RANGE OF SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES, EXPLAIN HOW
SOCIOLOGISTS ATTEMPT TO UNDERSTAND SOCIETY.
The main aim of sociology is to seek an understanding or explanation as to how society functions or
operates. There are numerous sociological theories, some dating back as early as the 19th century,
these include Structural and Marxist Functionalism and Social Action theories. Throughout the years
these perspectives have gradually been modernised due to the changes that have occurred in society.
In this assignment I shall be looking at the key theories of the more notable exponents of the different
sociological perspectives from pre industrialisation times to the modern age and their interpretation of
how society works.

Also he believed that society should be studied from a scientific objective. He argued that sociology
should be based on the methodology of natural science and claimed that this would result in positive
science of society. (Giddens 1997)
Talcott Parsons was an American sociologist whose main contribution was to add to the view of
society the notion that functional relationships within and between institutions contributed to harmony
in the system thus society involves at least a level of integration between the parts. Parsons stated that
the central value of the system of a society provides the basic glue that shapes and holds the society
together and therefore provides the base for integration. He continued in saying that members of
society share the same goals, thus persons may have different roles and perform different functions,
but once they all agree on the values that underpin the goal to be attained, they are likely to have equal
commitment to attain the common goal. (Baert, Carreira da Silva 2010) According to Parsons, society
is based on a value consensus, which is a set of agreed goals, values and roles that standardise and
determine behaviour. This value consensus is established and maintained within the institutions of
society. Society is therefore a system and has to meet certain

Managing Public Transport Using Customer Satisfaction Data
Public transport in an era where sustainability matters are thoroughly concern and have to comply
with customer needs and expectation, challenges certain research on how customers perceive service
quality at this sector (Fonseca et al. 2010). For instance, in service quality concept, reliability

was a new drug in testing that held promise to control the cancer, but although the drug s clinical

Auden was not given access to it and he died. His anguish over his lack of time is evident when he

Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book
The representation of animals within Rudyard Kipling s The Jungle Book is symbolic of the
colonisation of India, advocating the agenda of the British colonisers through the theme of imperialist
oppression. This is particularly evident within the Mowgli story Kaa s Hunting as well as the animal
story Rikki Tikki Tavi . Within the Mowgli story, the theme of imperialist oppression is conveyed
primarily through the Law of the Jungle as Kipling uses Baloo, the Bandar log and Shere Khan
symbolically as justification. Animals within Rikki Tikki Tavi embody this representation also,
reflecting this demonstration of imperialist oppression despite the lack of pronounced law. The Law of
the Jungle is essentially a set of rules devised to govern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like Shere Khan, Nag and Nagaina represent the resisting of colonial imposition yet are presented as
antagonists despite their celebrated significance within Eastern culture (Veloso de Abreu 690). The
portrayal of these characters as the enemy epitomises Kipling s connotation of resistance as adverse.
Both Nag and Nagaina meet the same fate as Shere Khan to further reinforce this notion as they die
and imperial oppression triumphs. The character of Rikki Tikki Tavi also holds symbolism within the
scheme of Indian colonisation as he is subject of colonial rule, employed to protect and defend his
white masters (Nyman 207). The mongoose sacrifices his traditional role to live under colonial rule, a
choice encouraged as the narrator states that every well brought up mongoose always hopes to be a
house mongoose some day (Kipling). For both Rikki Tikki Tavi and his masters to live, the
antagonists, those who resist imperial oppression, must die. This is explicit as Nag knows that
mongooses in the garden meant death sooner or later for him and his family (Kipling), once again
justifying imperial oppression even without the Law of the Jungle . The advocating of the agenda of
British colonisers through imperial oppression even extends to the character of Chuchundra as he is
afraid of both the coloniser and of standing up to the coloniser, represented

Han and Rome both believed that technology should be utilized for public works as seen in documents

The Origins Of The Tattoo
I am planning on getting a new tattoo in the next six months and have been carefully thinking about
what type of symbolism I want this specific tattoo to have. I am looking for something that represents
motherhood, love, feminism and the pure joy I have for being the mother of three amazing children. In
this paper, I will be exploring the origins of the tattoo, a style of tattoo I am interested in, the colors
and symbols of what I want to get and their meanings.
There appears to be no specific date to when tattooing was actually created . It is thought, however,
the art of tattooing was founded by accident. The theory is that a prehistoric man cut himself and
accidentally rubbed soot from a fire into it. Once the cut healed, the realization that the mark remained
behind was enough for these men and women to experiment with what they had just learned.
Tattooing then became a version of sacrifice. It involved pain, fire and blood. Since bloodletting was a
common way for the early humans to sacrifice to the gods, I suppose it is not too surprising that they
viewed this new practice as such. These early tattoos symbolized the alignment to their gods will, the
increase of fertility and a person s virility, the preservation of one s body after death and was the
ranking system among the early tribes. It was considered bad luck for a common person to have the
same tattoo as the chief.
Wherever tattooing was truly discovered, we do know it was around during ancient Egypt.

Intaglio can be used with a variety of different materials such as glass, wood, and stone, but zinc
seems to be the favorite. Intaglio is used in a variety of different methods such as etching, drypoint,
line engraving and aquatint. The process may seem a little lengthy, but it s well worth the effort. A
gooey black waxy material is spread all over the material used. When it is dries, the designer scratches
into it and then placed in an acid bath. The ink is then applied and ran through a press where
duplicates can be made. There are a variety of hard grounds that can be used such as aquatint, sugar
lift and spit bit. Intaglio pictures are so unique and interesting due to the simple fact of how unique the
process is. The pieces are elegant, beautiful and permanent. Intaglio is an art that only certain people

  • 2. Of Oedipus Rex s Influence On The Number 23 Oedipus Rex s Influence on The Number 23 Julia A. Meade University of Maine Oedipus Rex is one of the first tragedies in theatre history to be recorded, and to have survived for present day society to appreciate. Written by one of three ancient greek playwrights, Sophocles, this performance has paved the way for many other pieces of work (Brockett Ball, 2014). One such work from contemporary times, The Number 23, a movie starring Jim Carrey, appears to follow a similar, if not the same, plot as Oedipus Rex. Both pieces of work start in the middle of the trouble; The play starts in the middle of a deathly illness that has spread across the kingdom of Thebes, which Oedipus is ruler of, and the movie starts with Walter reading a book that seems oddly similar to his own life. Oedipus is tasked with finding out who murdered the previous king, since the god Apollo told Creon, Oedipus brother in law, that the murderer is the abomination in Thebes that has caused the illness. Walter becomes obsessed with the main character of the book he received from his wife, whose life revolves around the number 23. He tasks himself with finding out more about the author of the book, since he believes the book was somehow written about his own life. Both of these characters become investigators to find the truth. In Walter s journey he finds more and more details of the book that fit details in his own life. In the book are characters Fingerling and Isabel whom, both, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. I Liked The Feel Of Nudeness Analysis The Secret Truth to Words I liked the feel of nudeness (Kidd 134). Every day people use sentences to describe how they re feeling, to answer questions, including thousands of other reasons. While it may not be apparent, every word and phrase have a meaning. Each and every simple thing said by humans have their own stories, their own backgrounds. While some words people speak are bland and unimportant, their words always express something unique that can be broken into parts to explain the words said as a whole. Therefore, phrases can be broken down from a grouping of words with little to no meaning, to single words with many explanations. First, is a very interesting sentence, one with many meanings to some, and no meaning to others. In the book, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the main character in the book Lily thinks to herself, I liked the feel of nudeness (134). This quote can be explained in so many different ways, but the way I interpret it is unique to myself. To me, this quote is expressing freedom and beauty, and can be connected with ancient Greek art. As seen in greek art and in countless of other examples in the world, it is blatant that nudeness is far more than just a bare human body. It is a symbol for what people on earth work to achieve every day, complete freedom. Some contradict saying that with too much freedom comes too much pressure, which can lead to a negative outcome. Yet, what they fail to realize is, when given absolute freedom, one is able to be live their lives based purly upon what they feel is the right thing for them. • 4. Why Are Mayans Important To Today s Society The Maya have been known as a very important and significant society. There are many resources that give some information on their society but have you ever really thought about what specific things make them a significance to today s world? The Maya have made some very significant advancements in language/numbers, agriculture, and religion. To begin with, the Maya have such a significant impact on language and writing today. The Maya created and used writing/number systems, as well as their own language. Both of these are still in use all around the world and are very well developed. For example, used glyphs, as well as unique number systems that used a combination of bars and dots to create large numbers, (The Maya Ancient and Modern). The given quote goes further into how developed these strategies and systems were at that time. These talents of theirs play a very big part in why they have such a large impact and significance. They practiced strategies such as draining fields, crop rotation, and house held gardens. Along with these diverse strategies, they also made sure that nothing was ever wasted and that everything was done themselves. For example, The Highland Maya grew and harvested the cotton themselves, then spun and dyed the thread to prepare it for weaving, (Mayan Huipiles). The Maya did have an impact on these strategies because they are very similar to modern techniques of farming and living as if you must do it all yourself. As for modern day relations to the Maya, the Maya also had some very interesting perspectives on religion and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Skilled Immigration Controversy The discourse on skilled immigration revolves around the controversial H 1B worker visas, the largest visa program for temporary, skilled immigration to the United States, and the level of the annual cap of such visas. Proponents pushing to raise the annual visa cap, argue that there exists a shortage of domestic labor supply in certain industries. Moreover, these workers enable firms to compete globally by raising their competitiveness, growth, and innovation. Critics of skilled immigration, however, argue that skilled immigrants are not necessarily skilled, and that the principle use of the H 1B visas is for firms to minimize their labor costs, which has the effect of undercutting native wages, and displacing native workers. The H 1B program grants temporary work visas to workers in specialty occupations, most commonly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Firms must pay substantial fees to apply for a worker, and the worker is tied to the firm for the length of their visa (the initial length being three years). Law requires that H 1B workers be paid the prevailing wage for the job in the firm or the geographic region where the person is employed as to discourage worker ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The question of whether there is a shortage of skilled labor supply cannot be accurately determined given the current visa system and the agendas of firms. Since applications of the visas are not accepted once the cap is reached, there is no exact information on the demand. Osteoporosis is a disease where the body looses too much bone proteins or doesn t make enough which causes the bones to become weak which can be considered also as low bone mineral density (BMD)(https://www.nof.org/patients/what is osteoporosis). This result can cause things like hip fractures and shortened height, which are common occurrences in Japanese Americans as they age. Japanese Americans in addition also experience the lowest BMD which is one of the reasons they probably have the highest rate of Osteoporosis. In particular, ... Japanese Americans also tend to be more lactose intolerant, resulting in calcium deficiency and a lower bone density. In a study an increase of surgically induced menopause has been seen in Japanese American women, with a mean age of the menopause seen being now seen at the age of 51.5 compared to the 55.5 of native Japanese women. • 7. Ramps Height This investigation seeks to determine the distance that a marble can travel after leaving a ramp with retrospect to the ramps height. This experiment wished to find the relationship between the height of the ramp and the distance that the marble will travel from the end of the ramp (Diagram 1, value d). The ramp is positioned on top of a bench with the height of the ramp being the dependent variable. The reason that this subject is important is because it demonstrates a wide understanding of linear motion. Secondly, this scenario has some extremely relevant physics components present in many fields of experience, for example calculating the projectile of an unguided missile, or calculating how particular objects are going to be affected by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the experiment is undertaken the distance from the ramp to the landing position of the ball is recorded (value d in diagram 1). This means that the formula, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 can be used to find the vertical component, however, (t) time is required for this formula. Using the equation v=dtthe time can be found. vt=dt(dt=height of the table) t=dv Both the distance (d) and velocity (v) are known so they can be substituted into the equation to find time (t). Going back to the original equation Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2 the known values can be added to the equation, Xv= X1+Vvt +12at2where X1= initial position and Vv= initial velocity ∴Xv=12at2(Note X1= 0 and Vv = 0) This equation now has to be derived to calculate the vertical velocity. Vv=at The vertical component therefore has a velocity of the acceleration (gravity = 9.8ms^ 1) multiplied by the time. • 9. Performance Analysis Of Fso Communication System Performance Analysis of FSO Communication System: Effects of Fog, Rain and Humidity Abstract Free Space Optics (FSO) is one of the most promising new access technologies. FSO provides the transmission of data with unlimited bandwidth. The atmospheric attenuation is caused by two main factors absorption and scattering. This paper investigates a performance study of free space optics channel for variable wavelengths 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm at distance range of 1 km. The simulation reports minimum BER for NRZ OOK modulation technique at different receiver diameters in presence of fog, rain and humidity attenuation. The results shows how to improve the system to achieve minimum BER and maximize the power received that can be detect at distance 1 km. Keywords free space optics (FSO); fog; rain; humidity. Introduction FSO communication, also termed as optical wireless, is an optical communication technology that uses line of sight communication system and tries to achieve the need for high bandwidth over short distances [1]. There are various atmospheric attenuation effects on FSO link such as fog, rain, snow, humidity and temperature [2]. The majority of FSO systems are using 850 nm, 950 nm and 1550 nm [3 5] wavelengths. Research studies have shown that fog is the most important factor because the size of fog particles is comparable to the transmission wavelength of optical and near infrared wave [6]. The Departed Comparison The movies Infernal Affairs (2002, directed by Andrew Lau) and The Departed (2006, directed by Martin Scorsese), the latter being an adaptation of the former, are surprisingly similar films overall. The discrepancies between the two motion pictures are only easily seen when analyzing the difference in the narrative, plot and cinematography used within each film, while taking into account the influences of the differing cultures that the two films were created in (i.e. location of creation). Due to the differing locales: China (Hong Kong) for Infernal Affairs and the United States (Boston) for The Departed, the unique and different cultures influenced the modification that took place in the adaptation from the former into the latter. In the former, it is barely touched at all and most love interests are chaste whereas in the latter it is much more explicit. Throughout The Departed, it is apparent that sexuality goes hand in hand with masculinity: as expressed by Sullivan mocking the firemen for being gay when the police department loses to a football game. Most insults and threats invariably involve sexual references unlike Infernal Affairs. One interesting thing to analyze between the two films, is the psychological stress that is shown and acted out by the characters in the films. While The Departed is a longer film, it is slightly less psychologically nuanced than Infernal Affairs. Sullivan is not shown as truly evil, but his speculations are never really scrutinized. Costigan is easily seen conflicted, but that stems from his fear of being discovered and killed. In Infernal Affairs, it is somewhat clear that both Lau and Chen are feeling a disconnection between their internal and external self, stemming from their involvement in spying. The borderline between a police officer and a triad member becomes easier to cross. Causes of Mexico s balance of payments difficulties prior to Peso devaluation With the large capital surplus largely arising from foreign investments to support the huge trade deficits in the Mexican current account, all seemed to go well for the Mexican economy until several political crises erupted and several macroeconomics mistakes were left exposed in 1994 which affected foreign investor s confidence. The year 1994 marks the final year of Carlos Salinas de Gotari s administration in Mexico. In order to boost the popularity of the party in hope of garnering more votes, Salinas went a high spending splurge which led to high deficits. Mexico s trade deficit further deteriorated due to trade liberalization through the participation in North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 1992, Organisation for Economic Co operation and Development (OECD) and World Trade Agreement (WTA) in 1994. Fuelled by the overvalued peso and trade liberalization, Mexico was importing at a rate much faster than it could, leading to rising trade deficits. • 12. The Importance Of Environmental Conservation In Colorado Environmental conservation, particularly waste diversion, is an important social problem for the reason that it not only affects people but the planet as a whole. The shocking reality is that the United States produces the greatest amount of waste in the world, while it only makes up five percent of the overall world population as stated in Recycle Across America (as cited by Worldwatch Institute). When people think of Colorado, they probably tend to think of its capital Denver, however, when I think of Colorado, I think of the city Boulder due to its zero waste initiatives. Boulder is leading the initiative to recycle and reduce waste while Denver is the big city and capital of Colorado and it only has a diversion rate of nearly twenty percent ( We Are Zero Waste, 2017). This means that less than twenty percent of used products are composted or recycled while the other eighty plus percent goes to landfill. Boulder is leading the initiative with a diversion rate of thirty nine percent as of 2015 and has a company called Eco Cycle and other companies similar which handle recycling and volunteer at events throughout Colorado to make events a green event ( We Are Zero Waste, 2017). Based on the Factfinder Census, it is important to note that there are a few key reasons as to why Denver has a lower waste diversion rate than Boulder. To elaborate, Denver has an estimated 2016 population of 693,060 while Boulder has only an estimated population of 322,226 (United States ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Domestication of the Last Frontier Essay The Domestication of the Last Frontier In 1865 the frontier line generally followed the western limits of the states bordering the Mississippi River, bulging outward to include the eastern sections of Kansas and Nebraska. Beyond this thin edge of pioneer farms, lay the prairie and sagebrush lands that stretched to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Then, for nearly 1,600 kilometers, loomed the huge bulk of mountain ranges, many rich in silver, gold and other metals. Under the homestead Act of 1862 a farmer could either realize the old dream of free land and simply by staking out a claim and living on it for years, or by buying the land at $1.25 an acre after six months. (Tindall 878) Unfortunately for the would be farmers, the land itself was suited more for cattle ranching than farming, and by 1880 nearly 22,400,000 hectares of free land was in the hands of cattlemen or the railroads. In 1862 Congress also voted a charter to the Union Pacific Railroad, which pushed westward from Council Bluffs, Iowa, using mostly the labor of ex soldiers and Irish immigrants. At the same time, the Central Pacific Railroad began to build eastward from Sacramento, California, relying heavily on Chinese immigrant labor. The whole country was stirred as the two lines steadily approached each other, finally meeting on May 10, 1869, at Promontory Point in Utah. The months of laborious travel hitherto separating the two oceans was now cut to about six days. She has won praise and acclaim for her ability to incorporate humor, biting wit, irony and symbolism into her writing style. Her themes usually depict the very nature of human behavior and issues of power between men and women as it relates to society ( The Writer. New York Times). So far, it seems like Europe s strategies are far ahead than North America who has not yet executed any strategies to reduce antibiotic resistance despite the heavy usage of antibiotics as mentioned earlier. Finally, new guidelines are in place by Europe s government: NG15 and KTT9. According to Hossack (2006, p.1), the ultimate beneficiary of a strong chair CEO relationship is their company, as they are performing distinct roles, while supporting each other. However Murden (2012) argues that such a relationship would be rewarding to both of them. When CEO needs mentoring, the chair would offer valuable counsel. Robert (2002, p.493) states that the chairman positively contributes to CEO performance. The chair being the performance evaluator of the CEO, the trust and respect between them cannot be overemphasized (Kiel 2012, p. 233). Likewise CEO would be genuinely disclosing the important matters to the chair, without last hour surprises. It is the responsibility of chair to get to know from the CEO, of current transactions on matters concerned to the board (Kiel 2012, p.233). A harmonious relationship between chairman and CEO can help an organization to resolve even severe issues (Kakabadse et al. 2006, p.147) (Murden 2012). There appears to be no specific date to when tattooing was actually created . It is thought, however, the art of tattooing was founded by accident. The theory is that a prehistoric man cut himself and accidentally rubbed soot from a fire into it. Once the cut healed, the realization that the mark remained behind was enough for these men and women to experiment with what they had just learned. Tattooing then became a version of sacrifice. It involved pain, fire and blood. Since bloodletting was a common way for the early humans to sacrifice to the gods, I suppose it is not too surprising that they viewed this new practice as such. These early tattoos symbolized the alignment to their gods will, the increase of fertility and a person s virility, the preservation of one s body after death and was the ranking system among the early tribes.
