family were forced to use a separate entrance and sit behind them on a balcony. Moody noticed that
her friends whiteness meant they were treated better, but at her age she could not understand why their
skin tone made them better than her: why their whiteness provided them with a pass to downstairs in
that nice section and [her] blackness sent [her] to the balcony .1 She became determined to discover

Patients with the cardiovascular disease tend to have a weak heart muscle. Wahlstrom and Colleagues
(2017) explored the paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) in patients with the cardiovascular disease.
Generally, atrial fibrillation is provoked by stress and anxiety. They found that yoga practiced by their
80 participants for 12 weeks showed an improvement in the heart rate, decreasing the progression of
arrhythmia and the remodeling of atria. By performing yoga regularly, these participants were able to
maintain their stress level low by activating the parasympathetic system. After 12 weeks post study,
the patients who performed yoga afterwards were found to have 24% decrease conducting atrial
fibrillation than those who did not do yoga on regular basis. Their conduction of atrial fibrillation was
only six percent. Yoga practice was shown to decrease blood pressure, improve endothelial function,
and reduce inflammation (Lakkireddy, 2013).
Another study by Jones and Colleagues (2016) concluded in their studies that the 12 weeks of 90
minutes yoga practice done by postmenopausal women increased the heart rate variability. Since
women during the phase of menopause have increased heart rate, by performing yoga, the
parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) dominance caused an increase in the heart rate variability. The
second half of the group performed regular 90 minutes exercise and it was found to be unbeneficial.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (Henry et al., 2016), over
500,000 people were homeless in the United States on one given night in January 2016. The Canadian
Observatory on Homelessness reported that 35,000 people were homeless in Canada around the same

As homelessness became a larger issue in the country, the federal government began to pay more
attention to it. In 1987, Congress passed the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act, which
provided funding for emergency food and shelter programs specifically designed for the homeless
(Padgett et al., 2016). The Act also created the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness
(USICH), which was largely inactive until 2002 (Padgett et al., 2016). At this point, federal
homelessness policy managed homelessness by providing shelters and other short term solutions, as
opposed to preventing homelessness and actually getting people off the street.
Despite millions of dollars from Congress funding services for the homeless, homelessness did not
decrease in he U.S. during the 1980s or 1990s. Since then, an ideology known as Housing First has

prioritizes providing people experiencing homelessness with permanent housing as quickly as possible
