Do Video Games Cause Violence And How Does Video Games...
Many people think video games can cause violence. Most of the people reading this would say yes,
that video games do cause violence because a lot of times you see video games connect with violence
on the news, but how often are video games the main reason that the act of violence someone caused
happened. But what is video game violence and how do these scientists classify it? Most importantly
how do you measure aggression? There have been 300 studies give or take between 2005 to 2013. That
s on average 37.5 studies per year over eight years. Yet none has yielded a good answer on if video
games cause violence or not. When it comes down to the risk factors of violence ¨no single risk factor
consistently leads a person to act out their aggression.¨(Tibi Puiu) Most of these studies were on a time
of two to three hours a day. Along with all of these studies there have been four meta analysis. Meta
analysis is a statistical analysis that combines groups of similar data usually to show the effect size.
With all of this data surely the world would get a good firm answer. Nope, the research has yet to
show a causal relationship. Among kids between the ages of 12 and 17 97% play some sort of game
with violence. (Susan Scuttl) Now violent games can be seen as violent by one person and nonviolent
by another. It s all on perspective People who want to blame video games for real life violence point to
a literary that a person would believe supplies evidence to the association. Counter claim can be
reading a sad book would lead a person to sad thoughts but people say that this doesn t cause
depression. Dr. Christopher Ferguson a professor at Stetson University studies 103 young adults who
were randomized to play no video game, a non violent video game, a violent where they played the
good guy, and a violent video game where they played the bad guy . He found that those kids who had
history of playing violent video games had fewer hostile feeling during a frustration test. Dr.Ferguson
also said that most of the people that show any type of negative thoughts on modern media are much
much older. With that quote most of these so called experiments that show that there a definitive link
between violent behavior and

Essay The Death of Socrates
The Death of Socrates Viewing the painting The Death of Socrates by Jacques Louis David, one can
perceive many different subject matters, both literally and metaphorically. The obvious is seen within
the setting of the painting. The clear illustration of where the event is happening provides the onlooker
with a glimpse into a different time and era. Conversely, the artist has taken the liberty to hide deep
meaning inside the work of art through less apparent means. Symbolism through art work has endured
from early works to contemporized ones, here is no different. Taking the two aforementioned into
consideration gives us a glimpse into both the symbolic and factual significance of the occasion. What
we can term as the Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Given the body of a Greek god, Socrates seems far from frail and is bursting with strength and power.
Furthermore, to give Socrates an air of wisdom, he was given a beard. The beard which is
representative of knowledge and intelligence flows freely upon the great teacher as his time of
execution approaches. While appearing to have the divinity of a god, Socrates is still painted with
physical emotion. The duality of being godly and human at the same time may have been a recurring
theme at the time this was painted. Not only looking at the mere representation of the figure who is
Socrates, but by examining how he is situated among others in the painting also uncovers meaning in
of itself. Studying the way that Socrates body is situated you can see that the artist is trying to make a
statement of nobility in self sacrifice. The finger of Socrates is pointed upward and is in the highest
position in the chamber. Much like a mountain commands the landscape, so does Socrates finger in a
room full of disarray and uncertainty. This can also tells us that although ready to die and in his final
hour, his teachings and beliefs will continue to live on. Although Socrates is on his deathbed he still
continues to teach and philosophize. Something else that should be noted is the posture of Socrates.
His back is completely erect with no support. Everyone else in the picture

Analysis Of Bolsa Familia Springs From A Long Tradition Of...
Bolsa Familia springs from a long tradition of welfare and development strategies in Latin America.
Economic and social development are of central concern to governments and development agencies
worldwide due to their direct link to equality. This can be explained through the well defined link
between income levels and health, education and nutritional outcomes, emphasizing the importance of
addressing inequality in order to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Thus, reducing
inequality is central to the success of policy initiatives, as the Bolsa Familia s strong focus on
developing human capital is what makes it a poverty reduction program rather than a social assistance
one (Fitzbein et al, 2009: 11). Targeting development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Figure 1: Social security, health, and education expenditure in Brazil
Source: Haggard and Kaufmann, 2008: 388.
Welfare can be defined as the minimum level of responsibility of the state for its citizens this is what I
will attribute to social security in Figure one. Welfare can be in the form of a steady base transfer, in
order to provide ongoing, or short term payments to alleviate financial hardship. In contrast, human
capital accumulation (HCA) can be attributed to investments in education and health (Figure 1). HCA
is the increased education, health and productivity of potential workers, to which social security is
only a precondition. It is a central driver of human and economic development. Thus, Bolsa Familia s
conditionality is what distinguishes it from a welfare scheme to a poverty assistance scheme.
Furthermore, the conditionality aspect of cash transfers is what assures requirements regarding human
capital accumulation will be met.
CCTs are a site of convergence of international and statist development policy initiatives, which are
played out at the community level by administrators and agents on the ground. Thus, Bolsa Familia is
led by governments, endorsed by the World Bank, and implemented by local authorities. CCTs are
seen as an alternative to more traditional and paternalistic approaches to social assistance (de la Briere
and Rawlings, 2006: 6). It is this level of decentralisation which contributes to their appeal on both the

The Cause Of Gun Violence
According to the Virgin Islands Police Department s public information officer as quoted in the VI
Consortium (Gilbert, 2016, para. 4), violence is increasing and is expected to continue rising and reach
60 non vehicular homicides by the end of the year in the territory. Within the same VI Consortium
article (Gilbert, 2016, para, 5), the Governor of the Virgin Islands, Kenneth Mapp was quoted as
saying [t]he violence is going to be brought under control, but there is going to be more violence and
there s going to be more homicides and more shootings before we arrest this problem because we have

Many educators might believe that teaching gun safety skills is the role of the parents, while the
parents might assume that the educators are taking on that role. The role of educating children about
gun safety skills should be equally implied by the parents and the educators, both having an outline of
required regulations they should discuss with accurate and modern information. The results of this
research might persuade the Department of Education to implement a course or a mandatory part of
the curriculum to discuss and prevent gun violence and administer proper and firearm safety

The World Is A Beautiful Place Poem Analysis
The world is a beautiful place to live in blissful ignorance. The grassy meadows, the alluring sunset
and the serene waters are a few of many scenery that beguile human beings into believing that the
world is beautiful. Lawrence Ferlinghetti s life experiences as an orphan and a soldier in World War II
had shown him the flaws of society that has existed in many generations such as hunger, death and
inequality. To raise consciousness of the world, he used his literature to achieve this goal. In the
didactic poem, The World is a Beautiful Place , Lawrence Ferlinghetti reveals the brutal truth of the
world in order to break the narrow minded and ignorant outlook people have towards the world. Many
poetic devices were used to emphasize the theme of the poem. Repetition and imagery was used to
remind the readers of the underlying bitter tone of the poem while showcasing the different life scenes
in the world. Enjambment was also used throughout the poem to ... Show more content on

There are always two sides of the world that shouldn t be ignored, but instead should be noticed and

goodness and wickedness in the world. The World is a Beautiful Place is a didactic poem that uses
various literary devices to emphasize the theme. Repetition and imagery was used to give readers an
extensive view of the scenes in life and reminds them of the underlying message in the poem.
Enjambment was also used to display the poet s never ending train of thoughts of societal problems

Benefits Of Living In A Shared House In College
Living in a shared house while you are in college is for sure your life experience. Either you have
great, good or not that good experience, there is a high possibility that what you experience in a shared
house remain in your memories for the rest of your life. One of the reasons might be the fact that you
have to live with people that probably you had never seen before. Moreover, those people can be from
different parts of the country. But whatever the reason, anyone who study far from his or her
hometown has a strong impact on his or her life, where very positive o very negative.
When a person move to another city because of college, positively influenced by the change. First of
all because it is a great opportunity to expand someone s friendship, for example if the person move to
a house where there are ten other students, which are usually from different towns or cities, it is a
chance to have ten more friends. At the same time, it allows to know more about those owns, because
despite the fact that they are in the same country and even in the same region, there are slight cultural
differences such as different names for the same fruit for example.
On the other hand, people s experience living in a shared house may not be the best, especially for
those ones who had never been left home. For them, it might be really difficult because usually they
are not used to do housework, and as they are on they are on they own, they might experience some

The Man Who Quit Money By Mark Sundeen
Born this way Selfishness is defined as the stinginess resulting from a concern of your own welfare
and the disregard of others. Selfishness, once passing a certain level, is seen as a character flaw by
many people. Where does selfishness come from? Is it a trait in which as humans we pick up over
time, or is it an animalistic trait in which we are born with and have no control over? Author Mark
Sundeen tells us the story of Daniel Suelo, in the book The Man Who Quit Money. Daniel Suelo was a
mid aged man, who decided to drop everything and live on his own without the use of money; he
would no longer live the typical American lifestyle and survive strictly on the kindness of others and
the leftovers he could find in dumpsters. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I didn t truly understand it at the time, but as I grow older and mature I am beginning to understand
more and more. Also, in that same conversation, my father told me about some of the people he works
with and works for, and how they give back but often only in the spotlight. They will donate money
when the attention is on them, or they will do charity events when the media is involved. Looking
back at it, this is a very selfish idea. When do we hit that point in our life where we are so selfish that
we can not help others; is it a conscious decision or are we just not aware of our actions? I have seen
this same of idea of selfishness in my own experiences. I went to a very wealthy private school, with
many students coming very wealthy families. Often these families would donate money to the school,
but in return they expected a plaque or they expected something to be named after them, some kind of
recognition. Some people will say this is not selfish because they are giving back; however, others will
say this is a selfish action because they are only giving looking for a return. People often jump to the
conclusion that Daniel Suelo is very unselfish because he doesn t have any money, and because he
will work jobs for free. In my eyes Daniel Suelo can be seen as a selfish person, not with money
because he

Desert Desert Environment
The deserts of central Australia make up a unique ecoregion. As it may be properly assumed, an arid
desert environment is not easy to adapt to. Many different species, including birds, reptiles, mammals,
and various plants are able to thrive in such conditions. Human impacts on the island continent have
interrupted the success of some of these species. One group of species that have been very negatively
impacted by human interaction are small digging mammals. These mammals are typically small and
almost rodent like. Although small, digging mammals, such as Macrotis lagotis (the Greater Bilby),
have a large impact on the vegetation biodiversity of the ecoregion. They use their front paws to dig
into the ground while they search for food. In the process, diggings capture organic matter, provide
habitat for a diversity of microscopic and macroscopic organisms, and increase nutrient cycling.
Diggings also capture plant seeds, increasing seedling germination, recruitment, and plant growth. The
overall effect of mammal diggings is therefore increased plant vigor and resilience, increased
biodiversity and consequently improved ecosystem functioning (Fleming et al 2014). Due to various
impacts by human, these small mammals have quickly been declining. The large impact humans have
had on the small mammals is the introduction of invasive species. Felis catus (feral cat) and Vulpes
vulpes (fox) are overpopulated invaders who prey on species such as Macrotis lagotis and other small

Process Essay On Unfamiliar Vehicle Driving
As a driver, there is a good chance that at some point you will need to drive an unfamiliar vehicle.
Whether you are renting a car, borrowing a friend s vehicle, or test driving a vehicle, being able to
safely operate an unfamiliar vehicle is important, and there are several steps you can take to driver
safer when operating an unfamiliar vehicle.
Ask the owner or another driver who knows the vehicle well to explain any unusual features.
Familiarize yourself with the vehicle before taking it on any major roads. This is especially important
for a new driver or for someone who has driven the same vehicle for a long time and does not have
experience driving an assortment of vehicles. This may mean driving it around the parking lot a few
times ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Test the brakes before you need them. You may need to hit them sooner or harder than you would with
your usual vehicle. In some cases, the brakes may require less pressure than your normal vehicle.
Understanding the brakes before you take off can help you to apply the right pressure at the right time.
If you are driving a larger vehicle, create a larger pocket of space around your vehicle than you think
you need. If you normally drive a smaller vehicle, you may misjudge the size of your larger vehicle.
You may need to turn off the radio and eliminate other distractions when driving an unfamiliar
vehicle.
If the vehicle has a manual transmission and you have only driven an automatic, make sure someone
teaches you how to drive a manual transmission before you attempt to take it on the road. Empty
parking lots and rural roads are often good choices for learning to drive a manual transmission vehicle.

Analysis Of Autumn By John Keats Essay
To Autumn by John Keats exemplifies a poem full of imagery that showcases the scenery of a typical
Autumn ensemble. The name itself is something worth analyzing. The To Autumn deems autumn as
the recipient of the rhetoric. The title is pregnant with personification. It is structured in three eleven
line stanzas that follow the chronological progression of autumn with autumn (personified)
performing three distinct occupations at each level/stanza. Personification is habitually present
throughout the poem and serves as an indirect character. Autumn is exemplified metaphorically as one
who conspires with the sun, labors the land s crops, and a talented musician. It personifies premature
autumn when all naturalistic beings have ultimately reached maturity and face the inevitable life cycle
of conception, birth, maturity, and death. It achieves this through its use of imagery, and figurative
language such as personification. The overarching theme exemplifies autumn as an ambiguous
abstract that is conducive to connoting several meanings in literature. It can be seen as maturity and
wisdom. It can be seen as elderly age, but before morbidity and fatality, the harvest of a lifetime of
learning and the imminent conclusion of existence. Keats opens his first stanza by addressing autumn
which serves as a source of personification where the author extends human qualities to an ecological
manifestation. Keats elucidates autumn s vibrant abundance and its familiarity with the sun,

The Economic Problems Of The Reconstruction Era
Equality and freedom between blacks and whites were very different, causing problems to breakout.
The Reconstruction Era went on from 1863 to 1877. It was taken place in the South, it was the greatest
problem that still remained after the Civil War and had to be solved. In general, the changes made
after the Civil War did not help African Americans move closer to achieving the American Dream due
to the economic, political and social problems that they faced due to the reconstruction. The problems
that southerners produced around the Reconstruction Acts stopped blacks from having any say
economically in the Reconstruction Era, distancing them away from the economic freedom they had
always wanted and achieving the American Dream. One of the biggest economic problems they faced
was sharecropping. A sharecropper was a tenant farmer especially in the southern US who is provided
with credit for land, tools, living quarters, and food, who works on the land, and who receives an agreed
share of the value of the crop minus charges(Sharecropping Worksheet). The landowners soil was not
guaranteed to be good as well, and if it was bad then it made it harder for the farmers to grow crops.
Dealing with all of this made it very hard for farmers to actually make enough money to pay the
landowner back and have enough money to do tenant farming. Which made it nearly impossible to get
out of sharecropping and achieve the American Dream. The Black Codes also impacted African
Americans

Macbeth Tragic Hero
In Shakespeare s play Macbeth, the main character goes from being a virtuous war hero at the
beginning of the story to a malevolent tyrant towards the end. This defines Macbeth as a tragic hero
throughout the play. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably
leads to his/her own destruction. Not only does he fit the definition of a tragic hero, but he also
exhibits many important characteristics that shape this description. These characteristics include being
an individual of high noble birth and incorporating many admirable heroic qualities. Further, tragic
heroes are doomed to make a serious error in judgement and are responsible for their own fate. As
well as this, they have a tragic flaw, leading them ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In response to the first murderer telling Macbeth that Fleance had escaped the murder, Macbeth states,
The young snake that escaped will in time become poisonous and threatening (3.4.32 33). This shows
how Macbeth realized how he made an irreversible mistake as he knew that the witches predicted
Banquo s sons to eventually become king. Therefore, Fleance could be a threat to his throne. Before
this occurred, Macbeth also says, Then comes my fit again. I had else been perfect, Whole as the
marble, founded as the rock, As broad and general as the casing air. But now I am cabined, cribbed,
confined, bound in To saucy doubts and fears (3.4.23 27). This event proves how Macbeth is worried
about his throne as confidence in safety and innocence collapses. Now that Fleance has escaped as
well, Macbeth is put up with the greater threat of trying to find him again later on in order kill him.
This allows Fleance to stay safe for a while, and become a larger threat to Macbeth as he is becoming
more prepared and older for the throne if something were to happen to Macbeth. After he realizes that
he had made an irreversible mistake, Macbeth then accepts responsibility for his own fate. Upon
seeing the ghost of Banquo at his banquet, Macbeth says, You can t say I did it. Don t shake your
bloody head at me (3.4.59 60). This highlights how Macbeth is unconsciously facing and accepting
the responsibility for his own fate. Since Macbeth saw a ghost of his best friend that he killed, this
shows how guilt is definitely on his mind, and how he must be ashamed of his actions. If Macbeth
honestly didn t face and accept responsibility for his own fate, he would have disregarded the ghost
altogether and probably would have went with the assumption of having too much wine when he first
came in contact with the ghost. Towards the end of the play, Macbeth decides to leave his castle and

in connection with the merger to be approximately $1.285 billion (less the amount of rolled equity) .
While many of the implied equity values for Seagate s operating businesses summarized in the table

opinion that the consideration to be received by holders of Seagate common stock in connection with
the merger was fair, from a financial point of view, to those holders, by considering all of its analyses
of the merger and the leveraged buyout, taken as a whole.
The passages show that Morgan Stanley fear value was $2 billion for the business operation. This
value is 43% lower than our valuation of $3.48 billion for the deal. The passages and the published

Paraphernalia For The Lottery Essay
The Lottery: Thesis How blindly following makes horrible acts seem humane How traditionalism
overpowers the strongest of morals and emotions The Mindless following of traditionalism ignores
one s morals.
Ideas:
The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the
stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born. Mr.
Summers spoke frequently to the villagers about making a new box, but no one liked to upset even as
much tradition as was represented by the black box. (5)
The villagers are extremely resistant to change, although as seen in other passages, the lottery is not
without its detractors.
There had been, also, a ritual salute, which the official of the lottery had had to use in addressing each
person who came up to draw from the box, but this also had changed with time, until now it was felt
necessary only for the official to speak to each person approaching. (7)
The lottery has evolved over time, yet there are fundamental elements of it that the villagers would
never consider changing

use stones. (76)

the rising costs of electrifying rail infrastructure stands as of 2003 at $2 Million per mile, ballooning

The lack of growth observed in the state of California with the Hydrail project sparks question as to

Sean Armstrong s Eros And Psyche
To earn a good mark on a test, one must be willing to study continuously, in spite of the hassle of
doing so. To win gold in the Olympics, one must be dedicated to the sport and train constantly, despite
the difficulty. From the smallest of objectives to the greatest, never has anyone achieved anything
important for their lives without commitment and hardship. In Sean Armstrong s short story, Eros and
Psyche , these very same attributes are presented in order to acquire love. By Psyche agreeing to
accomplish Aphrodite s tasks and facing the jealousy and wrath of the goddess in order to gain back
the love of her life, Eros, she has introduced herself to a journey of trials and tribulations. In Eros and
Psyche , Sean Armstrong uses the three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, the tasks that are given are not at all simple. One of the most dangerous of them requires her to
obtain some of Persephone s beauty by traveling to the underworld which is considered to be a
sentence of death (229). Even with the knowledge that she could possibly be risking her life to fulfill
this task, Psyche still undertakes it. This is because she is aware that by completing this task, she will
be able to be with the love of her life and giving up now would mean that all her hard work would be
in vain. By incorporating a character such as Psyche who displays a persistent characteristic in such an
impossible task, Armstrong implies that having a willingness to do something despite its difficulty and
pursuing it until the end will always have a reward. Second, Psyche is not only rewarded with Eros,
but she is also given the status of a god. When Eros takes Psyche to Olympus after completing her
tasks, he convinces Zeus that Psyche has proven her love for [Eros] and therefore let her stay in
heaven (230). Psyche earns herself a seat on Olympus due to the fact that she stays committed to
accomplishing her given tasks, and in doing so has proven that she is prepared to undergo any task in
order to be with Eros which is rewarded with a rightfully earned spot on Olympus. By rewarding
Psyche for seeing her tasks through, Armstrong implies that there is a reward in diligence and hard
work.

Babe Ruth s Career
BABE RUTH Career through 1927
What a year for Babe Ruth, he had 60 home runs in one season! He had 540 attempts and hit 192 of
them. That is a little bit better than his season before where he had 47 home runs and 184 hits. Also
this year he had 164 RBI s compared to his 146 the year before. Which clearly shows improvement in
his game. And on the defensive side of the field he is also a pitcher and an outfielder. In 1927 he had
89 strikeouts. He also led them to the World Series and won it. Which makes the Boston Redsoxs even
more frustrated since Harry Fraze (Agent for the Red Sox) sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees for
$425,000 in the year 1919 and was soon fired in 1922.

A Musical Called The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz With An All...
In 1974, a musical called The Wiz opened in Baltimore at the Morris A. Mechanic Theatre and on
Broadway in 1975. The Wiz was an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum s The Wonderful Wizard of
Oz with an all African American cast placed within the context of 1960 s and 1970 s African American
society. The musical kept the rural Kansas setting and agrarian Oz as well as many of the other central
plot devices from the novel. In 1978 Motown released a movie loosely based on the musical which
starred Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the Tinman, and
Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion. The movie moved the story from Kansas to Harlem and Oz to
fantastical dystopian version of New York City.
The Wiz has several female characters that are central to the storyline: Aunt Em, Miss One the Good
Witch of the North, Evillene the Wicked Witch of the West, Evamean the Wicked Witch of the East,
Glinda the Good Witch of the South, and Dorothy. All of them except for Dorothy are representative
of some form of the motherly family oriented place African American woman hold in society. Dorothy
represents a new type of female role for African American woman in society, one that is independent
and has choices about what role she wants to play in society. This paper argues that Motown s
production of The Wiz shows the creation of a new role for black women in society, one independent
from the motherly family oriented role society previously expected of them.

According to Greenspan (2015), in Starbucks coffee s case, the following external factors contribute to
the strong force of competition. First is a large number of firms (strong force), the second is the lower

Starbucks business development strategies are focusing mainly on geographic extension around the

Threat of Substitute of Products According to Greenspan (2015), in the five forces analysis model, this
force pertains to the impact of substitute goods or services. In Starbucks coffee s case, the following
external factors contribute to the stronger force of the threat of substitution. First strong force is the
availability of substitutes. Second is the lower switching cost which is a strong force and the third
force is the low cost of substitutes (strong force) (Greenspan, 2015). The threat of customers selecting
on substitute items is another huge business sector power. There is a virtually endless list of food and
beverages that can be good replacement of Starbucks coffee. This market power is fortified by the fact
that there is no exchanging cost or switching cost required

This decision raised controversy with regard to the exclusion of illegally acquired evidence across all
levels of the United States court system. In Gideon v Wainwright (1963), the court dealt with the issue
of right to counsel for non capital and capital cases. The court was to determine whether states need to
appoint lawyers for defendants who could not pay in both capital and non capital offenses. In a
unanimous 9 0 decision, the court held that the Sixth Amendment applied to all states by virtue of the
14th Amendment, implying that states had to provide counsel to defendants in state criminal trials
involving serious criminal offenses. As a result of this decision, two significant issues were raised: the
right to counsel as provided by the Sixth Amendment and the stages in the criminal justice system at
which the defendant should be allowed counsel. These issues were based on the standards of effective
counsel for purposes of establishing whether the right has been denied to the defendant (Pollak, 1979).
The case of Miranda v Arizona concerned the issue of whether police interrogatory practices on
persons without notifying such persons on their protection against self incrimination and their right to
counsel amounted to the violation of the 5th Amendment. In an unusual decision of 5 4, the court
ruled that incriminating evidence stated by the accused cannot be admissible in a court

Gerald Ford Biography
Following his defeat in the 1976 presidential election, Gerald Ford retired to Rancho Mirage,
California. Thereafter, Ford appeared frequently in public as a speaker, lecturing for private audiences
and on university campuses. In his post presidential years, Ford wrote a number of books, including an
account of his presidency, A Time to Heal (1979), and Humor and the Presidency (1987). Always very
athletic, Ford continued to enjoy the game of golf.
However, Ford s exit from Washington did not immediately end his political ambitions. He surprised
most observers when he entered into discussions with Ronald Reagan in 1980 about running on the
Republican ticket with the former governor of California. However, Ford took the offer to the media
(specifically to CBS anchor Walter Cronkite in a convention interview); feeling betrayed, an angry
Reagan withdrew the offer, which ultimately went to George H.W. Bush. During the 1980s and 1990s,
Ford emerged as an elder statesman in the Republican Party. Likewise, Ford wrote extensively on
domestic and foreign policy issues of the day. He also served on a number of corporate boards and

How The Kidneys Serve The Primary Functions Of Plasma Volume
The kidneys serve the primary functions of regulating plasma volume, electrolyte balance, producing
hormones, acid and base balance, removing waste, and retaining water to produce urine. These wastes
come from the breakdown products of metabolically active muscle, and from food consumed. Your
body utilizes what it needs, and the waste is sent into the urine. The body will regulate water volume
within the body by helping the body retain water when plasma osmolarity decreases, as well as excrete
water when plasma osmolarity is high. Water and other materials are reabsorbed or excreted as it
passes through the tubules of the nephron in the kidney to help maintain the composition of the blood.
The Kidney consists of two layers, the outer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Loop of Henle is the area of greater ion concentration due to higher amounts of ion absorption
(primarily on the ascending limb). Because the ascending limp of the loop of Henle is in the renal
medulla, it makes the renal medulla much more concentrated than the renal cortex. This then moves
into the distal convoluted tubule, which is responsible for more absorption, just not as extensive as the
proximal tubule. Following the distal tubule are the collecting ducts, which gives the kidney its striped
appearance. We also reabsorb urea and water in the collecting ducts. Urea is usually what is mainly
excreted in urine. The peritubular capillaries and vasa recta that branch across the nephron itself will
filter materials back into the efferent arterioles to be reabsorbed back into the blood stream.
The three main responsibilities of the kidney include, filtration (movement of ¬¬¬¬¬ things out of
glomerulus to Bowman s space), absorption (movement of things from tubular lumen into the blood
via the peritubular capillaries), and secretion (movement of things into the tubular lumen from areas
other than the glomerulus).
The nephron, the functional unit of the kidney, is the site where filtering, absorption, and secretion
actually occur. There are around 1 million nephrons in each kidney. This filtration is carried out in
what is called the renal corpuscle (the glomerulus and Bowman s capsule). The filtration of fluid is
ideal at the

Alternative Methods of Resolving Legal Disputes
A legal dispute is a disagreement over the existence of a legal duty or right. Usually most legal
disputes are resolved in a court of law. However, there are alternative methods of resolving legal
disputes other than by a court. Such methods include Tribunals as well as Arbitration. There are
different Tribunals which exist to resolve a variety of disputes. Generally, a tribunal is known to be
any person or institution with the authority to judge, to pass that particular judgment, or to determine
claims or disputes. For example the industrial tribunal sits to dertermine statutory employment law
disputes such as wrongful dismissal, unfair dismissal and redundancy. However industrial tribunals

The process of arbitration is governed by the arbitration act which provides a flexible method of
resolving disputes. Advantages | Disadvantages | Cheaper | No right of appeal | Speedy, informal and
flexible | No jury for claimant | Private proceedings | Awards may be based upon justice and equity
rather than evidence | Arbitrator is an appropriately qualified expert | Unknown bias and competency
of the arbitrator | The arbitration award is final | May be highly complex |
Other alternative methods of resolving legal disputes are negotiation, mediation and conciliation.
Mediation is a way of resolving disputes between two or more parties with concrete effects. Typically
a third party assists the parties to negotiate a settlement. The term mediation broadly refers to any
instance in which a third party helps others reach agreement. The process is private and confidential,
possibly enforced by law. Participation is typically voluntary. Conciliation is a less formal form of
arbitration. This process does not require an existence of any prior agreement. Any party can request
the other party to appoint a conciliator. One conciliator is preferred but two or three are also allowed.
In case of multiple conciliators, all must act jointly. Parties may submit statements to the conciliator
describing the general nature of the dispute and the points at issue. Negotiation is the most basic
means of settling our differences. It is back and forth

Summary Of The Rooftop Of The Creek
Mary split with Lovienthal and Steaks as they left the rooftop in search of Laura and Pamela. She
wanted to inform them of the zombies breaching the creek, and to help gather the children because it
looked imperative that they would be leaving the school immediately. Steaks and Lovienthal set off
for the bus garage to get Albert. They both hoped that he, Johnny, and the McAllisters had made it
farther along in their fortification of a couple of buses than what the time had allotted them to work.
When Mary found Laura she was in the teachers lounge with Sarah and Pamela playing a board game.
Mary quickly and frantically told them what had happened. A wave of panic than set over Laura
leaving her speechless and visibly shaking. Pamela stepped up and told her to take Sarah and go with
Mary to the gymnasium to retrieve her sons and the other children. After that they should meet back at
the cafeteria where she would be with James packing up supplies. Laura still stood frozen and Pamela
had to snap at her yelling, Go now! in order to get her to break out of her coma like state. Laura then
grabbed her daughter by her arm, and together with Mary they ran for the gym. As soon as Pamela left
the teachers lounge she ran into Blake and Mitch. They had seen the McAllisters leave the school and
then return in Albert s golf cart with a subsequent mass of the living dead giving chase to them.

Social Capital In Post-Disaster Recovery Summary
Every day the world continues to spin no matter what happens to the people in it. While most of those
days occur without a major incident, every once and a while an event happens that captures the world
s attention. Some events, like Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the public was aware of the storm
approaching New Orleans, Louisiana. Others, like the Tokyo Earthquake of 1923, came as a surprise.
Time, distance, and awareness all separate these two traumatic natural disasters. Rather, what does not

An important part of being able to rebuild after a natural disaster, according to Daniel Aldrich, is to
build social capital (Building Resilience 2). Throughout Building Resilience: Social Capital in Post
Disaster Recovery, Aldrich uses examples from both Hurricane Katrina and the 1923 Tokyo
Earthquake to show how effective strong societal bonds can be in repopulating cities that have
suffered large natural disasters. A clear example, Aldrich articulates, is the difference between
rebuilding efforts in the Village de L Est and the Lower Ninth Ward. Originally these areas had
roughly the same levels of poverty but Village de L Est rebuilt a majority of the area while the Lower
Ninth Ward is still mostly deserted (Building Resilience 1). The strong bonds that existed between the
Village de L Est residents allowed them to become more committed to reestablishing their community.
For many of the areas in both conflicts, the reliance on societal bonds prompts an understanding that
allows all members of the community to feel tied to the area and keeps the desire to rebuild

The Importance Of Happiness Is The Key To A Perfect Life
I once was told by my mother, happiness is the key to a perfect life . Throughout my life, I have
carried that statement in my heart. Those few words have taught me how valuable the little things in
life truly are. Some of the little things in life that allow me to be the happiest person I can be are the
following: My boyfriend Dominic, family, my dog Riley, and Netflix. Dominic brings out my
happiness by always makes sure I don t go a minute without smiling. If it wasn t for my family, I
wouldn t be where I am today and I m incredibly happy with how much they push me to be the best I
can be. When I m sad, my dog always knows how to cheer me up by licking my tears away or she lays
next to me and watches Netflix. Netflix makes me happy due to the fact that I don t have to do
anything but lay back and enjoy a funny movie or show with the people I love. These things are what
make my world go around every day.
Anytime that I am feeling stressed or down, Netflix cheers me up. Netflix allows me to sit back and
relax. Watching the tv provider, allows me to forget all my problems, and allows me to watch other
people have problems. Netflix to me is like a bottle of milk to a baby because its calms me down,
takes the stress away, and overall just makes me a happier person. The best part about watching
Netflix is when my dog Riley lays next to me to watch the other animals on the tv.
The best part of life, is owning an animal. Animals, such as dogs, are proven to help relieve stress

Hepatitis C Essay
Hepatitis C Virus Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver, which can be caused by several different
viruses. It can also be acute or chronic, depending on the particular virus and stage of the disease. The
different types of hepatitis are hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis B associated delta
(HDV), hepatitis C (HCV) (Porth 2005). These viruses are capable of being transmitted in many
different ways but each one will instigate a viral response and inflammation within the liver itself.
HAV presents as an acute infection and does not become chronic (CDC 2011). HBV and HCV may

Cedars Sinai Medical Center (2011) asserts, Hepatitis C is curable in more than 50 percent of patients.
Management and treatment can include medications, lifestyle changes and possible organ transplant.
Pegylated interferon injections weekly and ribavirin daily therapy are the most common medication
used in the treatment of HCV. The interferon boosts the immune system to attack liver cells infected
with the hepatitis C virus and inhibit the virus replication within the cell. The ribavirin is a broad
spectrum of antiviral activity and inhibits replication and infectivity of the virus. Lifestyle changes can
include abstaining from the use of alcohol, as it is a proven factor, which can be damaging to the liver.

anyone of any age. It is most notably seen in adults in between the ages of 20 39. The CDC (2011)

Professional Writing Reflection
.
This course has afforded me the ability to improve my professional writing skills in the working field.
The various writing assignments from the first assignment of writing a memo to the final assignment
of a nursing exemplar has been a challenge. The learnings of a variety of elements that go alone with
professional writing has heighten my knowledge and skills of writing. The remainder of this paper
will give readers a view of what and how the writing assignments assisted me with this skill.
The learning I received from memo writing assignment would be to assure they are short, direct and
remain within inside the company; anything longer than a page the reader loses interest. The
assignment of composing a meeting agenda was one of my most pleasurable assignments, although it
carried some complicatedness for me. I have never been required to formulate a professional agenda
in my career; so, therefore, it required a lot of effort. In my opinion, the best element of the
assignment was devising discussion question. Formulating these questions caused me to think
critically and bring about my creativity. I do feel the need to continue practicing this skill in view of
the fact that I have never been required to draw one up, and will possibly be experiencing this in the
future. Therefore, I will continue to perfect this skill. With this assignment, I have learned how to
create a professional agenda and how to integrate nursing literature into a professional meeting. The
job research journal was one of my best learned assignments. I thoroughly enjoyed the research
portion, identifying each job mission and values and noting if they align with those of my own values.
This also allowed me to profoundly research the advantages and benefits of the top two jobs chosen.
This assignment I will carry throughout my career. For the resume and cover letter assignment, there
wasn t much new information for me to learn as I was very familiar with the contents of a resume and
cover letter. However, with this being so, I will continue to remember the significance of a resume and
will continue to utilize them throughout my career. The mock interview and elevator speech will be

Historical Information About The Lovely Bones
Historical information about the setting:
The Lovely Bones takes place in a small town near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The plot begins
December 6, 1973 with the rape and murder of Susie Salmon. As Susie herself says, It was still back
when people believed things like that didn t happen. (Sebold 1) During the 1970s most serial killers
and rape were unheard of. The fact that many people weren t aware led to the very criminals living
amongst them. Awareness to these crimes started to rise with the feminist movement and technology.
The inspiration to the setting in this novel also comes from where the Sebold herself grew up. She
grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia and she called it Nowhere, USA. She lived in some look alike
homes when she was an adult and made the same design for the setting in The Lovely Bones.
Biographical information about the author:
Alice Sebold was born on September 6, 1968 in Madison, Wisconsin. She moved and grew up in the
suburbs of Philadelphia. She many times called it Nowhere, USA. She graduated from Great Valley
High School in Malvern, Pennsylvania. She also graduated from Syracuse University in 1984. Alice
was raped when she was freshman in college. She was walking through an off campus park when she

  • 2. Do Video Games Cause Violence And How Does Video Games... Many people think video games can cause violence. Most of the people reading this would say yes, that video games do cause violence because a lot of times you see video games connect with violence on the news, but how often are video games the main reason that the act of violence someone caused happened. But what is video game violence and how do these scientists classify it? Most importantly how do you measure aggression? There have been 300 studies give or take between 2005 to 2013. That s on average 37.5 studies per year over eight years. Yet none has yielded a good answer on if video games cause violence or not. When it comes down to the risk factors of violence ¨no single risk factor consistently leads a person to act out their aggression.¨(Tibi Puiu) Most of these studies were on a time of two to three hours a day. Along with all of these studies there have been four meta analysis. Meta analysis is a statistical analysis that combines groups of similar data usually to show the effect size. With all of this data surely the world would get a good firm answer. Nope, the research has yet to show a causal relationship. Among kids between the ages of 12 and 17 97% play some sort of game with violence. (Susan Scuttl) Now violent games can be seen as violent by one person and nonviolent by another. It s all on perspective People who want to blame video games for real life violence point to a literary that a person would believe supplies evidence to the association. Counter claim can be reading a sad book would lead a person to sad thoughts but people say that this doesn t cause depression. Dr. Christopher Ferguson a professor at Stetson University studies 103 young adults who were randomized to play no video game, a non violent video game, a violent where they played the good guy, and a violent video game where they played the bad guy . He found that those kids who had history of playing violent video games had fewer hostile feeling during a frustration test. Dr.Ferguson also said that most of the people that show any type of negative thoughts on modern media are much much older. With that quote most of these so called experiments that show that there a definitive link between violent behavior and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay The Death of Socrates The Death of Socrates Viewing the painting The Death of Socrates by Jacques Louis David, one can perceive many different subject matters, both literally and metaphorically. The obvious is seen within the setting of the painting. The clear illustration of where the event is happening provides the onlooker with a glimpse into a different time and era. Conversely, the artist has taken the liberty to hide deep meaning inside the work of art through less apparent means. Symbolism through art work has endured from early works to contemporized ones, here is no different. Taking the two aforementioned into consideration gives us a glimpse into both the symbolic and factual significance of the occasion. What we can term as the Roman ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given the body of a Greek god, Socrates seems far from frail and is bursting with strength and power. Furthermore, to give Socrates an air of wisdom, he was given a beard. The beard which is representative of knowledge and intelligence flows freely upon the great teacher as his time of execution approaches. While appearing to have the divinity of a god, Socrates is still painted with physical emotion. The duality of being godly and human at the same time may have been a recurring theme at the time this was painted. Not only looking at the mere representation of the figure who is Socrates, but by examining how he is situated among others in the painting also uncovers meaning in of itself. Studying the way that Socrates body is situated you can see that the artist is trying to make a statement of nobility in self sacrifice. The finger of Socrates is pointed upward and is in the highest position in the chamber. Much like a mountain commands the landscape, so does Socrates finger in a room full of disarray and uncertainty. This can also tells us that although ready to die and in his final hour, his teachings and beliefs will continue to live on. Although Socrates is on his deathbed he still continues to teach and philosophize. Something else that should be noted is the posture of Socrates. His back is completely erect with no support. • 4. Analysis Of Bolsa Familia Springs From A Long Tradition Of... Bolsa Familia springs from a long tradition of welfare and development strategies in Latin America. Economic and social development are of central concern to governments and development agencies worldwide due to their direct link to equality. This can be explained through the well defined link between income levels and health, education and nutritional outcomes, emphasizing the importance of addressing inequality in order to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. Thus, reducing inequality is central to the success of policy initiatives, as the Bolsa Familia s strong focus on developing human capital is what makes it a poverty reduction program rather than a social assistance one (Fitzbein et al, 2009: 11). Targeting development ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Figure 1: Social security, health, and education expenditure in Brazil Source: Haggard and Kaufmann, 2008: 388. Welfare can be defined as the minimum level of responsibility of the state for its citizens this is what I will attribute to social security in Figure one. Welfare can be in the form of a steady base transfer, in order to provide ongoing, or short term payments to alleviate financial hardship. In contrast, human capital accumulation (HCA) can be attributed to investments in education and health (Figure 1). HCA is the increased education, health and productivity of potential workers, to which social security is only a precondition. It is a central driver of human and economic development. Thus, Bolsa Familia s conditionality is what distinguishes it from a welfare scheme to a poverty assistance scheme. Furthermore, the conditionality aspect of cash transfers is what assures requirements regarding human capital accumulation will be met. CCTs are a site of convergence of international and statist development policy initiatives, which are played out at the community level by administrators and agents on the ground. Thus, Bolsa Familia is led by governments, endorsed by the World Bank, and implemented by local authorities. CCTs are seen as an alternative to more traditional and paternalistic approaches to social assistance (de la Briere and Rawlings, 2006: 6). Either you have great, good or not that good experience, there is a high possibility that what you experience in a shared house remain in your memories for the rest of your life. One of the reasons might be the fact that you have to live with people that probably you had never seen before. Moreover, those people can be from different parts of the country. • 9. The Man Who Quit Money By Mark Sundeen Born this way Selfishness is defined as the stinginess resulting from a concern of your own welfare and the disregard of others. Selfishness, once passing a certain level, is seen as a character flaw by many people. Where does selfishness come from? Is it a trait in which as humans we pick up over time, or is it an animalistic trait in which we are born with and have no control over? Author Mark Sundeen tells us the story of Daniel Suelo, in the book The Man Who Quit Money. Daniel Suelo was a mid aged man, who decided to drop everything and live on his own without the use of money; he would no longer live the typical American lifestyle and survive strictly on the kindness of others and the leftovers he could find in dumpsters. ... Also, in that same conversation, my father told me about some of the people he works with and works for, and how they give back but often only in the spotlight. They will donate money when the attention is on them, or they will do charity events when the media is involved. Looking back at it, this is a very selfish idea. When do we hit that point in our life where we are so selfish that we can not help others; is it a conscious decision or are we just not aware of our actions? I have seen this same of idea of selfishness in my own experiences. I went to a very wealthy private school, with many students coming very wealthy families. Often these families would donate money to the school, but in return they expected a plaque or they expected something to be named after them, some kind of recognition. Some people will say this is not selfish because they are giving back; however, others will say this is a selfish action because they are only giving looking for a return. People often jump to the conclusion that Daniel Suelo is very unselfish because he doesn t have any money, and because he will work jobs for free. Many different species, including birds, reptiles, mammals, and various plants are able to thrive in such conditions. Human impacts on the island continent have interrupted the success of some of these species. One group of species that have been very negatively impacted by human interaction are small digging mammals. These mammals are typically small and almost rodent like. Although small, digging mammals, such as Macrotis lagotis (the Greater Bilby), have a large impact on the vegetation biodiversity of the ecoregion. They use their front paws to dig into the ground while they search for food. In the process, diggings capture organic matter, provide habitat for a diversity of microscopic and macroscopic organisms, and increase nutrient cycling. Diggings also capture plant seeds, increasing seedling germination, recruitment, and plant growth. The overall effect of mammal diggings is therefore increased plant vigor and resilience, increased biodiversity and consequently improved ecosystem functioning (Fleming et al 2014). Due to various impacts by human, these small mammals have quickly been declining. The large impact humans have had on the small mammals is the introduction of invasive species. • 13. Analysis Of Autumn By John Keats Essay To Autumn by John Keats exemplifies a poem full of imagery that showcases the scenery of a typical Autumn ensemble. The name itself is something worth analyzing. The To Autumn deems autumn as the recipient of the rhetoric. The title is pregnant with personification. It is structured in three eleven line stanzas that follow the chronological progression of autumn with autumn (personified) performing three distinct occupations at each level/stanza. Personification is habitually present throughout the poem and serves as an indirect character. Autumn is exemplified metaphorically as one who conspires with the sun, labors the land s crops, and a talented musician. It personifies premature autumn when all naturalistic beings have ultimately reached maturity and face the inevitable life cycle of conception, birth, maturity, and death. It achieves this through its use of imagery, and figurative language such as personification. The overarching theme exemplifies autumn as an ambiguous abstract that is conducive to connoting several meanings in literature. It can be seen as maturity and wisdom. It can be seen as elderly age, but before morbidity and fatality, the harvest of a lifetime of learning and the imminent conclusion of existence. Keats opens his first stanza by addressing autumn which serves as a source of personification where the author extends human qualities to an ecological manifestation. The Reconstruction Era went on from 1863 to 1877. It was taken place in the South, it was the greatest problem that still remained after the Civil War and had to be solved. In general, the changes made after the Civil War did not help African Americans move closer to achieving the American Dream due to the economic, political and social problems that they faced due to the reconstruction. The problems that southerners produced around the Reconstruction Acts stopped blacks from having any say economically in the Reconstruction Era, distancing them away from the economic freedom they had always wanted and achieving the American Dream. One of the biggest economic problems they faced was sharecropping. A sharecropper was a tenant farmer especially in the southern US who is provided with credit for land, tools, living quarters, and food, who works on the land, and who receives an agreed share of the value of the crop minus charges(Sharecropping Worksheet). The landowners soil was not guaranteed to be good as well, and if it was bad then it made it harder for the farmers to grow crops. Dealing with all of this made it very hard for farmers to actually make enough money to pay the landowner back and have enough money to do tenant farming. Which made it nearly impossible to get out of sharecropping and achieve the American Dream. The Black Codes also impacted African Americans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In response to the first murderer telling Macbeth that Fleance had escaped the murder, Macbeth states, The young snake that escaped will in time become poisonous and threatening (3.4.32 33). This shows how Macbeth realized how he made an irreversible mistake as he knew that the witches predicted Banquo s sons to eventually become king. Therefore, Fleance could be a threat to his throne. Before this occurred, Macbeth also says, Then comes my fit again. I had else been perfect, Whole as the marble, founded as the rock, As broad and general as the casing air. But now I am cabined, cribbed, confined, bound in To saucy doubts and fears (3.4.23 27). This event proves how Macbeth is worried about his throne as confidence in safety and innocence collapses. Now that Fleance has escaped as well, Macbeth is put up with the greater threat of trying to find him again later on in order kill him. This allows Fleance to stay safe for a while, and become a larger threat to Macbeth as he is becoming more prepared and older for the throne if something were to happen to Macbeth. After he realizes that he had made an irreversible mistake, Macbeth then accepts responsibility for his own fate. Upon seeing the ghost of Banquo at his banquet, Macbeth says, You can t say I did it. Don t shake your bloody head at me (3.4.59 60). This highlights how Macbeth is unconsciously facing and accepting the responsibility for his own fate. Since Macbeth saw a ghost of his best friend that he killed, this shows how guilt is definitely on his mind, and how he must be ashamed of his actions. If Macbeth honestly didn t face and accept responsibility for his own fate, he would have disregarded the ghost altogether and probably would have went with the assumption of having too much wine when he first came in contact with the ghost. The Wiz was an urbanized retelling of L. Frank Baum s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz with an all African American cast placed within the context of 1960 s and 1970 s African American society. The musical kept the rural Kansas setting and agrarian Oz as well as many of the other central plot devices from the novel. In 1978 Motown released a movie loosely based on the musical which starred Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow, Nipsey Russell as the Tinman, and Ted Ross as the Cowardly Lion. The movie moved the story from Kansas to Harlem and Oz to fantastical dystopian version of New York City. In Gideon v Wainwright (1963), the court dealt with the issue of right to counsel for non capital and capital cases. The court was to determine whether states need to appoint lawyers for defendants who could not pay in both capital and non capital offenses. In a unanimous 9 0 decision, the court held that the Sixth Amendment applied to all states by virtue of the 14th Amendment, implying that states had to provide counsel to defendants in state criminal trials involving serious criminal offenses. As a result of this decision, two significant issues were raised: the right to counsel as provided by the Sixth Amendment and the stages in the criminal justice system at which the defendant should be allowed counsel. These issues were based on the standards of effective counsel for purposes of establishing whether the right has been denied to the defendant (Pollak, 1979). • 26. Gerald Ford Biography Following his defeat in the 1976 presidential election, Gerald Ford retired to Rancho Mirage, California. Thereafter, Ford appeared frequently in public as a speaker, lecturing for private audiences and on university campuses. In his post presidential years, Ford wrote a number of books, including an account of his presidency, A Time to Heal (1979), and Humor and the Presidency (1987). Always very athletic, Ford continued to enjoy the game of golf. However, Ford s exit from Washington did not immediately end his political ambitions. He surprised most observers when he entered into discussions with Ronald Reagan in 1980 about running on the Republican ticket with the former governor of California. However, Ford took the offer to the media (specifically to CBS anchor Walter Cronkite in a convention interview); feeling betrayed, an angry Reagan withdrew the offer, which ultimately went to George H.W. Bush. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ford emerged as an elder statesman in the Republican Party. Likewise, Ford wrote extensively on domestic and foreign policy issues of the day. • 27. How The Kidneys Serve The Primary Functions Of Plasma Volume The kidneys serve the primary functions of regulating plasma volume, electrolyte balance, producing hormones, acid and base balance, removing waste, and retaining water to produce urine. These wastes come from the breakdown products of metabolically active muscle, and from food consumed. Your body utilizes what it needs, and the waste is sent into the urine. The body will regulate water volume within the body by helping the body retain water when plasma osmolarity decreases, as well as excrete water when plasma osmolarity is high. Water and other materials are reabsorbed or excreted as it passes through the tubules of the nephron in the kidney to help maintain the composition of the blood. The Loop of Henle is the area of greater ion concentration due to higher amounts of ion absorption (primarily on the ascending limb). Because the ascending limp of the loop of Henle is in the renal medulla, it makes the renal medulla much more concentrated than the renal cortex. This then moves into the distal convoluted tubule, which is responsible for more absorption, just not as extensive as the proximal tubule. Following the distal tubule are the collecting ducts, which gives the kidney its striped appearance. We also reabsorb urea and water in the collecting ducts. Urea is usually what is mainly excreted in urine. The peritubular capillaries and vasa recta that branch across the nephron itself will filter materials back into the efferent arterioles to be reabsorbed back into the blood stream. The three main responsibilities of the kidney include, filtration (movement of ¬¬¬¬¬ things out of glomerulus to Bowman s space), absorption (movement of things from tubular lumen into the blood via the peritubular capillaries), and secretion (movement of things into the tubular lumen from areas other than the glomerulus). The nephron, the functional unit of the kidney, is the site where filtering, absorption, and secretion actually occur. There are around 1 million nephrons in each kidney. This filtration is carried out in what is called the renal corpuscle (the glomerulus and Bowman s capsule). The filtration of fluid is ideal at the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Time, distance, and awareness all separate these two traumatic natural disasters. Throughout Building Resilience: Social Capital in Post Disaster Recovery, Aldrich uses examples from both Hurricane Katrina and the 1923 Tokyo Earthquake to show how effective strong societal bonds can be in repopulating cities that have suffered large natural disasters. A clear example, Aldrich articulates, is the difference between rebuilding efforts in the Village de L Est and the Lower Ninth Ward. Originally these areas had roughly the same levels of poverty but Village de L Est rebuilt a majority of the area while the Lower Ninth Ward is still mostly deserted (Building Resilience 1). The strong bonds that existed between the Village de L Est residents allowed them to become more committed to reestablishing their community.
