Motor neuron disease (MND), also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. It leads to muscle weakness and atrophy due to the degeneration of motor neurons. The majority of cases have no known cause. Currently, riluzole is the only approved treatment shown to modestly prolong survival. Symptomatic treatments are used to manage symptoms like excessive saliva and emotional lability. Prognosis is generally poor, with average survival of 3-5 years after diagnosis.
