The lymphatic system is a closed system of lymph vessels and lymph nodes that transports lymph fluid from tissues back to the blood circulation. Lymph fluid is formed from interstitial fluid that leaks from blood capillaries and contains proteins, bacteria, and other waste. The lymph vessels branch extensively and converge to form larger vessels that drain into the subclavian veins. Lymph nodes along the vessels filter the lymph and destroy bacteria. The lymphatic system plays an important role in fluid balance, fat absorption, and immune defense.
