The lymphatic system consists of lymph capillaries that drain into vessels, lymph nodes, and two main ducts. It returns excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream, transports fats from digestion, and provides immune surveillance. Lymph capillaries originate in tissues and converge into vessels containing valves that drain into lymph nodes before emptying into the right or thoracic duct. The system also includes diffuse and nodular lymphatic tissues as well as organs like the spleen, thymus, tonsils, and lymph nodes that filter lymph and produce immune cells.
