Magic In Baseball
Abrar Alrashidi, Cultural Anthropology 211
George Gmelch talked about baseball sport and how supernatural forces influence
Baseball players occupationally. Baseball magic has been observed many years ago,

Women, Oppression, And Treatment Of Young Girls And Women...
From the moment the first American settlers stepped off their musty ship and laid foot on the fertile
soil which makes up our great nation, women in America have almost always been seen as inferior
when compared to their male counterparts. What s more, Americans have a rich history in oppressing
those we deem to be lesser. In terms of women, this oppression has taken on many forms throughout
the years. From not being able to go to school to receive a proper education, to being denied suffrage,
to being criticized for how they look or what they wear, women have encountered obstacles that men
can sometimes only imagine. We as a nation have a defining past in which women were, and
sometimes still are, expected to look or act in a manner defined as appropriate by men and even by
each other. Nowadays, it seems as though we are attempting to compensate for the years of
mistreatment by sending positive messages of acceptance to young girls and women alike. However,
while one half of the population is being praised for their uniqueness, there is still another half who
are being left to fend for themselves in the shadows. Men and boys, though always perceived as the
strong and indestructible members of society, are not given the same encouraging spotlight as women
and girls. We live in a world where problems related to self image and self worth are gender neutral;
they do not merely seek to harm a single sex. Why then, does society typically only remind women
how truly special they

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Women Standing In Towels By Dove
This Dove magazine ad features three women standing in towels. They all have different ethnicities
from left to right there is a black woman, a hispanic woman, and then a white woman. The women are
all standing with big smiles showing their teeth . The black woman is curvier than the other two, and
is shown with her left hand on her waist. The hispanic woman is turned to the side, but is facing the
camera, and her left hand is positioned on her thigh. The white woman is thinner than the rest and her
right hand is touching her right shoulder. Behind them are 2 panels, one with black bold lettering
saying Before positioned on the left side, and on the right side is a panel with the same lettering saying

to be white and go through a process of lightening their skin to look more beautiful in their eyes. Near
the bottom is text that says you will have Visibly more Beautiful skin if you use this product, which is
showing that white women have more beautiful skin because the white woman is standing in front of

Certainty and Flexibility in Judicial Precedent
It is often believed that the relationship between certainty and flexibility in judicial precedent has
struck a fine line between being necessary and being precarious. The problem is that these two
concepts of judicial precedent are seen as working against each other and not in tandem. There is
proof, however, that as contrasting as they are on the surface they are actually working together to
achieve one common goal.
Judicial precedent in its broad definition is the process by which judges follow previously decided
cases to aid in their decision providing that the facts are sufficiently similar. The doctrine of judicial
precedent seeks to provide consistency and predictability in law by virtue of the application of the
principle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obiter dictums are not binding as they do not speak directly to the matter before the court, they do
however still prove useful in legal practice as they can be used as persuasive authority. Judicial
precedent as a whole is the way in which English law provides and maintains consistency and
predictability. This assumption of consistency and predictability through judicial precedent allows the
law to exude a sense of certainty, fairness and by extension some amount of flexibility; but the
question is, how can something which is consistent and predictable to such a degree that it is
considered certain exhibit flexibility? After all one would think that in order to be consistent and
predictable there must be rigidity involved.
Before we can delve into the relationship between certainty and flexibility in judicial precedent, each
element must be explored individually. Unlike legislation and statue which most times speak to
hypothetical situations, judicial precedent is a response to real situation and as such there is a
foundation of pragmatism which holds the principle together. As it relates to certainty, the law is
established in such a way that it is possible to predict what a decision will be and plan accordingly.
There is a sense of security in this element of judicial precedence because once a legal rule has been
established it is binding and cannot changed by a later or lower court, individuals can therefore adjust
their behavior with regard to the legal rule.

Newport News Shipbuilding And Dry Dock Company Case Study
Facts
Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (NNS) performs designs, construction, repair
and overhaul for ships, primarily for the United States Navy. On February 1987, the Defense Contract
Audit Agency (DCAA) issued a subpoena duces tecum to NNS demanding financial statements,
federal income tax return, Virginia income tax return and associated schedules for the period 1 January
1983 to 1987. NNS provided the state tax returns to DCAA but withheld the reminder of the
subpoenaed documents claiming the demand was unlawful and unenforceable and filed a declaratory
judgement action which the Government moved to dismiss. The district court denied DCAA s order

In its defense, NNS claimed that DCAA may subpoena materials that it is used only for determining
contract costs or data that is utilized for allocating costs to specific Government contracts. However,
these documents provide DCAA with factual data that is used to verify actual cost both direct and
indirect (i.e. G A overhead cost.) The court rejected NNS s argument that proposes that DCAA can

The basis of the rejection is documented in 10 U.S.C. Sec. 2313(a) and 2306a(f)(1) which authorize
DCAA to subpoena objective factual documents that can be used to evaluate the accuracy,
completeness, and currency of cost or pricing

Emphysema Essay
Emphysema
Introduction:
Emphysema is a condition of the lungs that involves the over inflation of the air sacs, otherwise
known as the alveoli. Normal functioning of the alveoli helps breathing in normal respiration. Unlike
other lung diseases this one can be inherited. This is a disease that can affect people of all ages and
genders. In 1994, the number of males with emphysema outnumbered the females by fifty four
percent. However, in the two years that followed the difference between males and females decreased
by ten percent.
Classification:
Emphysema is a lung disease that is classified as a COPD. (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)

Swelling and increased fluid in the lungs may also be a sign to look for. A steady tracking of the
symptoms and health history of the person should be taken into consideration as well.
Prevalence and/or Incidence: Emphysema is a fairly common disease, with two out of one thousand
people reporting cases. Currently, there are 1.8 million Americans in the United States that have
emphysema. Emphysema is ranked 15th among chronic conditions or diseases which limit people s
daily activity. A study by the American Lung Association shows that 44 percent of people with
emphysema have reported that their daily activities have been greatly limited due to the disease.
Ethnical Distribution: Emphysema can be contracted by people of all walks of life and does not favor
any particular ethnic groups. The contraction of emphysema mainly depends on life style.
Geographical Distribution:
Emphysema is a disease that in not only caused by the way you live, but can be contracted through the
area in which a person lives. For example, people who live in urban areas are at higher risk. This is
due to the fact that these areas are more highly populated with factories and cluttered with
automobiles. These factories produce a great deal of smoke which can be very harmful to the lungs of
the people who inhale it. The automobile exhaust has the same affect on the lungs if inhaled for

Christian Leadership Philosophy
The word leadership is defined as a person who directs or guides someone and has the ability to
influence or have an impact on their lives. Christian leadership is distinctively different from other
major leadership conceptions such as instructional, transactional, and transformational leadership
conceptions. Those who live as humble servants of Christ, should assume the position of leadership in
any given community such as CBU s International Service Program (ISP), because you can turn
someone s life around just by your actions and you will be setting an example for believers. In Mark
16:15 Jesus said, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Doing ISP plays a role in
leadership and you would be doing what God s calling all believers to do. In John 10:11 Jesus
declares, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Within this
verse, we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. Jesus is referring to us as sheep, He was not
speaking in affectionate terms. In the bible, sheep rank among the dumbest animals in creation. The
shepherd is the leader of the herd, without him, the sheep are lost, confused, and disoriented. The
shepherd leads, feeds, nurtures, comforts, corrects, and protects his heard. The shepherd of the Lord s
flocks leads by modeling ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Mary McLeod Bethune
Mary McLeod Bethune was an innovative leader because she took a story which was largely latent in
the population, equal education rights for black children, and brought it to national prominence
through the creation of the Bethune Cookman college. She was also a visionary leader because of the
incredible success she was able to attain in advancing the cause of equal education.
Bethune was such an effective leader because both she completely embodied her story and it became
completely central to her life and persona. Bethune was able to embark on her incredible quest
because of the educational opportunities she was provided by missionary teachers and therefore
dedicated her life ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This alone would not qualify as cognitive leadership, but because her rise to power was so closely
linked with her ideology, she was able to empower the equal education movement on a national level.
The trait theory of leadership states that leaders often exude certain traits that make them successful.
While there isn t any physical description of Bethune in this biography, it is clear that her intense
determination was a very effective leadership trait. This determination led her to pick moss from trees
to use as mattress hair and use all the money the school acquired to pay the teacher s salaries without
keeping any of it for herself. This determination also made her very successful at adapting to many
different situations or contingencies that arose. For instance, when the capacity of the existing school
house was exceeded, she talked the owner of a dumping ground into selling to take a five dollar down
payment. This example demonstrates Bethune s effective balance between her task centered
determination and her people skills.
In addition to cognitive theory, I think that this biographical account reveals another model of
leadership. Bethune s story shows how complete belief in one s cause can triumph over incredible
adversity. Strong belief in the ideological nature of a cause is necessary for one to develop the other
leadership traits to be

How To Achieve Goals In Life Essay
Some people are successful because they are destined to be such. But most people are more successful
because they are determined to reach this goal. We just know what we want and how to achieve it. You
would probably have laid out your plans for your life already, and that you would exhaust all efforts
just to attain what you desire. But sometimes, we question, how come no matter how hard you try to
perfect things the way you planned it, circumstances would not allow it? You start thinking, were your
efforts not enough to achieve your goals? Or maybe it is just not meant to be? Some people may be
too controlling of their lives and get burnt out fast. When this happens, your mindset tends to shift and
they turn into a complete opposite of what they used to be. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Just when you think you are good, you can actually be better. Never settle for mediocre, but try
surprising yourself and reach far beyond what you can imagine. Your success in life does not rely on
fate, but it depends on the effort you put in achieving your goals in life. The quote has a similar theme
with the first two lines of the second stanza in the poem If . It is okay to dream and visualize your
goals in life. But do not let it control you without making it into reality. In life, you may experience
the highest of the highs and lowest of the lows, which will both teach you to become a better person.
Know that we all have our strengths and limitations, which defines who we are. Correlating the quote,
the poem If and the poem Still I Rise altogether, they all speak about knowing one s self serving

Subjectivity In Doctor Moreau s The Island Of Doctor Moreau
In The Island of Doctor Moreau, one of the important characters is Moreau, a vivisectionist who has
fled the exposure of his experiments to a remote island with the aim of pursuing his focus on research
in the effort to perfect the Beast Folk . Moreau s claim is that the aim of his experiments and
interactions with the beasts is to raise them into human creatures, buthis true purpose is to preserve the
low status and nature of the beasts by denying any human attributes that are inherent in the animals.
Moreau s focus is on prohibiting the non human animals from having and demonstrating emotions and
attributes that are traditionally anthropocentric (human). Moreau does not allow the non human
animals to feel and demonstrate human emotions and symbolic attributes, including the desire for self
defense, autonomy, and feelings of shame (Wells 95 97). The objective of Moreau seems to be to
create and preserve a gap between the human beings and animal creatures. Nevertheless, in his efforts,
Moreau inadvertently reveals the significance of the nature and status of human beings.
In his efforts to vivisect non human animals and make them rational creatures , Moreau does not
differentiate between animal and rational characteristics. The effect of Moreau s actions and outlook in
the novel is to influence the audience s recognition of subjectivity as an important factor in
differentiating between human beings and animals. In the novel, Wells promotes the notion that while
human beings are animals, human animality represents a threat to progress. Moreau believes that
human perfection is a possibility, aiming to accelerate the process of evolution artificially to transform
animals into human beings mentally, emotionally, and physically. While respecting the aims of
Moreau, the narrator in the novel, Prendick, feels pity for the consequential Beast People , who he
views as failed experiments (Wells 121). Moreau is unable to achieve his objectives, complaining that
the instincts, desires, and cravings that inundate the animals creep back immediately after his
experiment. When Prendick returns to England, he is constantly nervous about human beings.

The creations of new businesses and the contraction or exit of less productive firms are key elements
in the dynamism of modern economies. New firms attract resources to new activities, and when they

countries. On the other hand, young firms seem likely to grow

The House Of Dreams By La Casa Sognata
La Casa Sognata is translated as The House of Dreams . This is what my family named our home
located in Key Largo. When you walked into the house, it was like all of your worries and problems
disappeared. It really did feel like all of your dreams came true in that one moment. The amount of
amazing memories I have in just one place is unbelievable. From relaxing outside and watching the
sunset to tubing on the back of the wave runners. It was truly amazing. The house was bought in
tribute to my grandmother that passed away on new years eve in 2003. My uncle had her ashes placed
in a memorial and placed in the ocean behind the house. The memorial was situated behind the home
to the west, so the sun always set over her. The memorial was tied to a purple buoy with a wreath. On
new years eve, every year, we would spread flowers on her ashes. We would talk to her and then
celebrate her life in the most relaxing place. My uncle always envisioned a place where everyone
could get together and have the time of their lives, and it was a success. I remember the first time I
saw the house. It was like a mansion in paradise. It was a two story, four bedroom home with a guest
house connected to it. When I first arrived, there was a gate that I had to enter. I got out of the car and
there were beautiful flowers and palm trees leading to the house. On the wall there was a plaque that
had my grandmothers face engraved in it and it said mia bella madre . I kept walking, noticing that

Many times, when an individual discusses Christ s sacrifice, they word it as defeating sin, as in
winning a battle. In the poem Dream of the Rood, the author explains the sacrifice through the point of

is, I beheld Glory s trunk / garnished with grandeur (14 15). However, further on the author then

image has been an issue in our society for a very long time. A lot of points were made by Dr. Cohan to
help her audience understand obesity and body image in relation to the sociology view of things. For
most of us, our body is very private. It s something that we cherish and respect and take care of. It is
our home and our responsibility is to take care for it. But like Dr. Cohan pointed out, as private as our
body is to us it is actually a public issue that relates to social structure. She states that the body is
socially and culturally constructed. I can agree with this statement. Society and different cultural
aspects definitely influence and determine the decisions we make in regards to our body and body
image. I found it interesting in knowing the different ways a body could be viewed, in terms of how it
can be percieved, valued, and treated. The way Milian King suggested that the body becomes a sight
for asserting, imposing, performing, challenging, and destabilizing categories of gender, race ethnicity,

the difficulty. From the smallest of objectives to the greatest, never has anyone achieved anything
important for their lives without commitment and hardship. In Sean Armstrong s short story, Eros and
Psyche , these very same attributes are presented in order to acquire love. By Psyche agreeing to

First, the tasks that are given are not at all simple. One of the most dangerous of them requires her to
obtain some of Persephone s beauty by traveling to the underworld which is considered to be a
sentence of death (229). Even with the knowledge that she could possibly be risking her life to fulfill
this task, Psyche still undertakes it. This is because she is aware that by completing this task, she will
be able to be with the love of her life and giving up now would mean that all her hard work would be
in vain. By incorporating a character such as Psyche who displays a persistent characteristic in such an
impossible task, Armstrong implies that having a willingness to do something despite its difficulty and
pursuing it until the end will always have a reward. Second, Psyche is not only rewarded with Eros,
but she is also given the status of a god. When Eros takes Psyche to Olympus after completing her
tasks, he convinces Zeus that Psyche has proven her love for [Eros] and therefore let her stay in
heaven (230). Psyche earns herself a seat on Olympus due to the fact that she stays committed to
accomplishing her given tasks, and in doing so has proven that she is prepared to undergo any task in
order to be with Eros which is rewarded with a rightfully earned spot on Olympus. By rewarding
Psyche for seeing her tasks through, Armstrong implies that there is a reward in diligence and hard
work.

American Football Vs Rugby Research Paper
Rugby versus American Football: Same Origin, Very Different Game
The roots of American football can be found in early versions of rugby. In the mid nineteenth century,
in Britain, both games have their origin in varieties of football played, in which a football is kicked at
a goal or kicked over a line. In the modern version of rugby and American football, a team of players
is required to carry an elliptical ball over the goal line to score points. In American football, the rules
are regulated by the National Football League. In rugby, it is regulated by the World Rugby Council.
Despite the similar aim of these sports, there are remarkable differences in how the ball is moved to
the goal and points are scored. American football consists of a game played between two teams that
has eleven players in the field in each team. This is a game of intense physical play to advance the ball
to the opponent s end zone and requires a calculated strategy. Tackling other players is key in both
sports and the physically of American football is arguably heavier thanks to the amount of protective
equipment worn.
Rugby is best described as a blend of the running of soccer and the contact of American football.

Advantages Of Trade And Specialization
Before the industrial revolution, most economic growth came from trade and specialization rather than
technological growth. But trade had its advantages and its disadvantages. In pre modern trade, the
major defect was the principal agent problem, and this problem would prevent any rise of trade, but
since early, people could manage to find some ways to deal with the principal agent problem in order
to exchange goods and services and to trigger economic growth.
In pre modern era, some societies started getting benefits from long distance trade and specialization
rather than technological change. Trade was encouraged by the similarities such as religion, currency
and language in addition to proximity of societies. Due to a lack in a proper legal system and contract
enforcement, principal agent problems were significant but societies always found indirect rules and
informal mechanisms, in order to continue exchanging goods and services.

preschool years, development is truly integrated: The biological, psychological, and social changes
occurring at this time are interrelated. A theory that will work for this stage in life is from the graph on
page 22 in Exploring Lifespan Development, behaviorism, and social learning. This theory is
continuous and basically, means to learn from right and wrong. This specifically pertains to this stage
in life because during this time the child s brain, gross and fine motor skills, and health are all trying
to mature into the next stage in life. Children begin to learn how to interact with others around their
age and how they should act. A study ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A major theory that works well with this stage is Piaget s cognitive developmental theory. His theory
focuses on the mental activities such as thinking, perceiving, remembering, believing, and reasoning.
Piaget believed that children go through four universal stages of cognitive development. Apparently, a
child goes through these four stages of cognitive development because they are trying to construct a
mental model of the world. In this stage of life, a child is in the third stage, the concrete operational
stage. The concrete operational stage is just as it sounds, children at this point think more logically, but
cannot grasp abstract and hypothetical concepts. Interestingly, this is also the door to when the child
starts to think about what people say of him. This concrete way of thinking helps to let the child
understand their thoughts and how they are unique to their environment. Around this stage, most
children begin to lose their childlike imagination and start to see the world for how it really is, even if
they fully understand everything. For school age children, the beginnings of cognitive self regulation
are shown to be understood yet not fully followed through. Cognitive self regulation is the process of
continuously monitoring progress toward a goal, checking outcomes, and redirecting unsuccessful
efforts (Berk 2014). Piaget s theory works best with this stage in life because it pertains to school age
children that start their way into

Essay On Marco Polo
I have not told half of what I saw Marco Polo. Marco Polo was a world famous traveler and trader.
The introductions of China and Asia, for many, was all thanks to him. Polo is most known for his
travels to China and his book. His book describes the basis of the descriptions of places that were not
really discovered. Polo s childhood was rough and unordinary. Polo was born around 1254 in Venice.
Polo s mother died when Polo was young, leaving him with his father, Niccolo. Niccolo and Polo s
uncle, Maffeo, however, left on a long expedition to Asia. This circumstance left Polo to be raised by
his uncle and aunt. His uncle and aunt taught Polo how to read, write, calculate arithmetic, and to
become a merchant (McNeese; History.com Staff). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Polo and the brothers arrived at Khan s summer palace, in Shangdu, China, Polo was in his 20

parts of India and Southeast Asia. Polo s travels gave him great knowledge of the Mongol empire, and
he introduced paper money to Europe. When Polo returned he started to govern a city in China
because Khan was so impressed by his work. Khan later promoted him to an official of the Privy
Council and to a tax collector in Yanzhou. (Marco Polo Biography.com;

Quest For The Holy Grail
Lancelot, Galahad and their
Quest for the Holy Grail
In the Arthurian Legend, Sir Lancelot is viewed as the powerful and skilled White Knight , however,
he is also considered as the Sinful Adulterer for his disobeyment to the knights code of chivalry.
Despite his innocence, these corrupt sins led to his unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail. Instead,
Galahad, the illegitimate son of Sir Lancelot, is destined to achieve the Holy Grail, his devotional
purity making him a greater warrior than even his prominent father.
For one thing, Sir Lancelot du Lac is viewed to be the greatest and worst knight of king Arthur s
Round Table. Firstly, Lancelot is widely known to be the greatest swordsman of the Round Table.
Legend tells that as a child, Lancelot is left by the lake, where he is found by Vivian, the Lady of the
Lake. She raises and fosters him, and in time Lancelot became one of legend s most powerful knights.
Additionally, he never failed in gentleness, courtesy, or in courage. He is said to be the bravest and
most pure of heart and is always willing to help others, saving a tremendous amount of people during
his lifetime. Nonetheless, Lancelot is also conflicted as the ill made knight who commits the horrible
sin of adultery. Queen Guinevere, King Arthur s wife, and Lancelot fall deeply in love and have an
affair that is eventually revealed by Mordred. Lancelot betrays the trust of Arthur and goes against his
vows as a knight. Because of this sin, Lancelot feels

DACA Damnation
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival program (DACA) has helped stimulate the United States
financially; by canceling it the Trump Administration has doomed our economy. Lawmakers have
quite a task ahead of them as they try to traverse the tumultuous territory that is the DACA
cancelation. However, one of the largest, if not the largest, problems that this move has created is the
threat it poses to the nation s economy. Bombastically, the Trump Administration made a move that
seemed to be supported by its followers. Yet, further analysis of the cancelation seems to greatly
cripple the United States, estimating that the nation stands to lose $215 billion if the former DACA
recipients are deported.

Symbols In The Crucible
Puritan societies in the late 17th century were very strict and when someone stepped out of line, they
were severely punished. The first thing that often comes to mind when one thinks of a crucible is the
little ceramic pot that is heated to high temperatures. However, the word crucible has three different
meanings. The first is the familiar ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may
be melted or subjected to very high temperatures. The other two are less familiar a crucible is also a
place or occasion of severe test or trial as well as a place or situation in which different elements
interact to produce something new. In Arthur Miller s The Crucible, all three of those definitions are
explored through plot. While readers follow the Salem Witch trials, it is understood how severe tests

exactly what happened in Salem. It is shown in the crucible a disorderly society of people being

Dropping Of Nagasaki Research Paper
Dropping of the bomb Nagasaki
On August 9th, 1945 at 11:02 A.M., another B 29 bomber, Bock s Car, piloted by Charles Sweeney
was sent by the United States to drop over Nagasaki. The bomb, called Fat Man, was dropped because
of the devastation at Hiroshima being insufficient in persuading the Japanese War Council to accept
Potsdam Conference s demand for unconditional surrender. Planning to drop the atomic bomb on
August 11th, the United States had to push forward the date to August 9th because of bad weather. At
1:56 A.M., Bock s Car took off, dropping the bomb at 11:02 A.M. at 1650 feet above the city. The
equivalent force of the atomic bomb explosion was equal to 22,000 tons of TNT. Although the
surrounding hills around Nagasaki contained a good amount of the destructive force, about 60,000 to
80,000 people were killed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

10,800 lbs, and had a length of 10 ft 8 in with a 60 inch diameter. The bomb was roughly the size of a

The Greek Temple
The architecture of ancient Greece is the architecture produced by the Greek speaking people whose
culture flourished on the Greek mainland, the Peloponnese, the Aegean Islands, and in colonies in
Anatolia and Italy for a period from about 900 BC until the 1st century AD, with the earliest
remaining architectural works dating from around 600 BC. Nikolaus Pevsner refers to the plastic
shape of the temple.....placed before us with a physical presence more intense, more alive than that of

The propylon or porch, formed the entrance to temple sanctuaries and other significant sites with the
best surviving example being the Propylaea on the Acropolis of Athens. The bouleuterion was a large
public building with a hypostyle hall that served as a court house and as a meeting place for the town
council . Remnants of bouleuterion survive at Athens, Olympia and Miletus, the latter having held up
to 1200 people. Every Greek town had an open air theatre. These were used for both public meetings
as well as dramatic performances. The theatre was usually set in a hillside outside the town, and had
rows of tiered seating set in a semicircle around the central performance area, the orchestra. Behind
the orchestra was a low building called the skênê, which served as a store room, a dressing room, and
also as a backdrop to the action taking place in the orchestra. A number of Greek theatres survive
almost intact, the best known being at Epidaurus, by the architect Polykleitos the Younger. Greek
towns of substantial size also had a palaestra or a gymnasium, the social centre for male citizens

Although there was some variation in the number of days of a Festival, they were always completed
within seven days of the dances and the eating Prayers were said that God might bless the corn and
meat during the year and make the people healthful. The preliminary Green Corn Feast was held in
August and the main Corn Feast was held in the middle or latter part of September, when the corn was
ripe.
It was believed that at this festival each person might look into a crystal to see if he would live
through the next year. If they could see themselves erect as they looked into the stone, it was believed
they would live, but if they appeared to be lying down, they would die before the first spring moon.
Those who were to die fasted all day and then had the priest consult the crystal again. If on the second

Mandate Of Heaven Analysis
Throughout pre unification China, the Mandate of Heaven was used as a justification in the
acquisition and eradication of dynasties. The Mandate of Heaven, the idea that a ruler reigned only
with the blessing of the heavens, was seen as a way to legitimize a dynasty and its ruler. Although it
may seem as if a heavenly mandate gives a ruler absolute power, this is actually not the case. Instead,
Mencius, a philosopher who emphasizes benevolent governance, asserts that a ruler can both acquire
and lose the heavenly mandate based on his behavior and the treatment of his subjects. If a ruler is not
equitable, in other words, the Mandate of Heaven can be withdrawn and bestowed upon a more
qualified ruler. Thus, although the mandate sounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Essentially, the heavens bestow the mandate upon the ruler, but the people are a factor in whether the
mandate stays with the ruler or not. Hence, Mencius emphasizes the importance of just rule in order to
please the people and keep the Mandate of Heaven.
Mencius once again underscores the people s role in the heavenly mandate and declares their right to
either abide by or revolt against a ruler. Mencius claims that rulers only possessed the Heavenly
Mandate to rule so long as they retained the hearts of the people . . . For Mencius, the human heart
was endowed with the ability to judge between right and wrong and constituted a bridge linking man
with Heaven (Glanville 331). Mencius s belief in the ability of the heart to determine right or wrong
gives the common people authority and power to identify whether a ruler is worthy of the mandate and
the favor of the heavens. Consequently, it is imperative that the ruler retains the people s support as
negative sentiments can lead to dissent and organized revolt amongst the people. This emphasis on the
intimate and powerful link between the people and the heavens is translated in Mencius s concept of
the ultimate supremacy of the people. Mencius declares that The people are of supreme importance;
the altars to the gods of earth and grain come next; last comes the ruler (Glanville 332). Mencius
prioritizes the

What s more, Americans have a rich history in oppressing those we deem to be lesser. In terms of women, this oppression has taken on many forms throughout the years. From not being able to go to school to receive a proper education, to being denied suffrage, to being criticized for how they look or what they wear, women have encountered obstacles that men can sometimes only imagine. We as a nation have a defining past in which women were, and sometimes still are, expected to look or act in a manner defined as appropriate by men and even by each other. Nowadays, it seems as though we are attempting to compensate for the years of mistreatment by sending positive messages of acceptance to young girls and women alike. However, while one half of the population is being praised for their uniqueness, there is still another half who are being left to fend for themselves in the shadows. Men and boys, though always perceived as the strong and indestructible members of society, are not given the same encouraging spotlight as women and girls. We live in a world where problems related to self image and self worth are gender neutral; they do not merely seek to harm a single sex. Why then, does society typically only remind women how truly special they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Certainty and Flexibility in Judicial Precedent It is often believed that the relationship between certainty and flexibility in judicial precedent has struck a fine line between being necessary and being precarious. The problem is that these two concepts of judicial precedent are seen as working against each other and not in tandem. There is proof, however, that as contrasting as they are on the surface they are actually working together to achieve one common goal. Judicial precedent in its broad definition is the process by which judges follow previously decided cases to aid in their decision providing that the facts are sufficiently similar. The doctrine of judicial precedent seeks to provide consistency and predictability in law by virtue of the application of the principle of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obiter dictums are not binding as they do not speak directly to the matter before the court, they do however still prove useful in legal practice as they can be used as persuasive authority. Judicial precedent as a whole is the way in which English law provides and maintains consistency and predictability. This assumption of consistency and predictability through judicial precedent allows the law to exude a sense of certainty, fairness and by extension some amount of flexibility; but the question is, how can something which is consistent and predictable to such a degree that it is considered certain exhibit flexibility? After all one would think that in order to be consistent and predictable there must be rigidity involved. Before we can delve into the relationship between certainty and flexibility in judicial precedent, each element must be explored individually. Unlike legislation and statue which most times speak to hypothetical situations, judicial precedent is a response to real situation and as such there is a foundation of pragmatism which holds the principle together. As it relates to certainty, the law is established in such a way that it is possible to predict what a decision will be and plan accordingly. There is a sense of security in this element of judicial precedence because once a legal rule has been established it is binding and cannot changed by a later or lower court, individuals can therefore adjust their behavior with regard to the legal rule. ... Christian leadership is distinctively different from other major leadership conceptions such as instructional, transactional, and transformational leadership conceptions. Those who live as humble servants of Christ, should assume the position of leadership in any given community such as CBU s International Service Program (ISP), because you can turn someone s life around just by your actions and you will be setting an example for believers. In Mark 16:15 Jesus said, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Doing ISP plays a role in leadership and you would be doing what God s calling all believers to do. In John 10:11 Jesus declares, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Within this verse, we see the perfect description of a Christian leader. • 13. Subjectivity In Doctor Moreau s The Island Of Doctor Moreau In The Island of Doctor Moreau, one of the important characters is Moreau, a vivisectionist who has fled the exposure of his experiments to a remote island with the aim of pursuing his focus on research in the effort to perfect the Beast Folk . Moreau s claim is that the aim of his experiments and interactions with the beasts is to raise them into human creatures, buthis true purpose is to preserve the low status and nature of the beasts by denying any human attributes that are inherent in the animals. Moreau s focus is on prohibiting the non human animals from having and demonstrating emotions and attributes that are traditionally anthropocentric (human). Moreau does not allow the non human animals to feel and demonstrate human emotions and symbolic attributes, including the desire for self defense, autonomy, and feelings of shame (Wells 95 97). The objective of Moreau seems to be to create and preserve a gap between the human beings and animal creatures. Nevertheless, in his efforts, Moreau inadvertently reveals the significance of the nature and status of human beings. In his efforts to vivisect non human animals and make them rational creatures , Moreau does not differentiate between animal and rational characteristics. The effect of Moreau s actions and outlook in the novel is to influence the audience s recognition of subjectivity as an important factor in differentiating between human beings and animals. In the novel, Wells promotes the notion that while human beings are animals, human animality represents a threat to progress. Moreau believes that human perfection is a possibility, aiming to accelerate the process of evolution artificially to transform animals into human beings mentally, emotionally, and physically. While respecting the aims of Moreau, the narrator in the novel, Prendick, feels pity for the consequential Beast People , who he views as failed experiments (Wells 121). Moreau is unable to achieve his objectives, complaining that the instincts, desires, and cravings that inundate the animals creep back immediately after his experiment. A major theory that works well with this stage is Piaget s cognitive developmental theory. His theory focuses on the mental activities such as thinking, perceiving, remembering, believing, and reasoning. Piaget believed that children go through four universal stages of cognitive development. Apparently, a child goes through these four stages of cognitive development because they are trying to construct a mental model of the world. In this stage of life, a child is in the third stage, the concrete operational stage. The concrete operational stage is just as it sounds, children at this point think more logically, but cannot grasp abstract and hypothetical concepts. Interestingly, this is also the door to when the child starts to think about what people say of him. This concrete way of thinking helps to let the child understand their thoughts and how they are unique to their environment. Around this stage, most children begin to lose their childlike imagination and start to see the world for how it really is, even if they fully understand everything. For school age children, the beginnings of cognitive self regulation are shown to be understood yet not fully followed through. • 32. Mandate Of Heaven Analysis Throughout pre unification China, the Mandate of Heaven was used as a justification in the acquisition and eradication of dynasties. The Mandate of Heaven, the idea that a ruler reigned only with the blessing of the heavens, was seen as a way to legitimize a dynasty and its ruler. Although it may seem as if a heavenly mandate gives a ruler absolute power, this is actually not the case. Instead, Mencius, a philosopher who emphasizes benevolent governance, asserts that a ruler can both acquire and lose the heavenly mandate based on his behavior and the treatment of his subjects. Hence, Mencius emphasizes the importance of just rule in order to please the people and keep the Mandate of Heaven. Mencius once again underscores the people s role in the heavenly mandate and declares their right to either abide by or revolt against a ruler. Mencius claims that rulers only possessed the Heavenly Mandate to rule so long as they retained the hearts of the people . . . For Mencius, the human heart was endowed with the ability to judge between right and wrong and constituted a bridge linking man with Heaven (Glanville 331). Mencius s belief in the ability of the heart to determine right or wrong gives the common people authority and power to identify whether a ruler is worthy of the mandate and the favor of the heavens. Consequently, it is imperative that the ruler retains the people s support as negative sentiments can lead to dissent and organized revolt amongst the people. This emphasis on the intimate and powerful link between the people and the heavens is translated in Mencius s concept of the ultimate supremacy of the people. Mencius declares that The people are of supreme importance; the altars to the gods of earth and grain come next; last comes the ruler (Glanville 332). Mencius prioritizes the ...
