Taking a Look at Gang Violence
Many American families share similar stories of their loved ones being murdered by violent street
gang members. These victims often had nothing to do with the gangs or gang members that killed
them. A street gang is a group of people who commonly involve themselves in heinous crimes such as
murder, assault, drug dealing, robbery, and car theft. These gangs are present all over the nation and
are starting to spread to other countries. It is imperative for the United States government to put a stop
to gangs and gang violence. Ed Gottesman and Richard Brown agree that for a group to be considered
a gang it needs six key elements: a collection of individuals, the use of symbols, special forms of
communication, permanence, a sense of turf, and involvement in crime. Gottesman and Brown go on
to say, What distinguishes a gang from other groups is its involvement in crime, which is often heavy
and recognized as a key feature of membership. This means that all gangs are involved in crimes, the
number one reason why the United States needs to put a stop to gang violence. Gangs form for four
main reasons: a need for family and companionship, basic needs such as food, a higher social status or
appeal, and protection. When there is a large migration or immigration of people, gangs tend to
increase in size because there are more people looking for these four basic needs. During the 1950s to
the 1970s, gangs grew greatly in the four regions of the United States, the East, Midwest,

The Theory Of An Organization
Organizations are groups of people working together to achieve a common goal. The organizations
theories correlate together in order for organizations to sustain functionality. In all organizations there
is a common unit of power that directs the organization toward a common goal. Within the
Department of Health and Human Resources, the source of power is the commissioner, and the
direction of the department is to have zero child fatalities and maintain safety of children.
The classical model focuses on the structure of the organization. The decision making starts at the top,
with the person in power and trickles down to the employees in the organizations. Hence, the person
in power has the authority and decision making capability. This is also known as bureaucracy, which
occurs within a government institution such as; when meetings occur, the commissioner will make the
final decisions about goals and how to implement those goals. All organizations recognize that
decisions have to be made. The decision theory is similar to the classical model in how decisions are
made and who makes the decisions. The person in power makes the decision, and the ultimate
outcome is to achieve a common goal. Decisions are made on rationale when possible, but achieving a
perfect goal is not the ultimate goal. When conflict occurs it is embraced, and organization work to
accommodate or even coerce members to achieve common goals. Human relations theory is derived
from the machine

Feminism In Angela Carter
Angela Carter does not speak of a Feminism that succumbs to patriarchal pressure. She allows certain
cracks and fissures to become visible in patriarchal structure and roles. Her treatment of the characters
and situations is notably ambitious. Her reworking of myths and weaving of imaginary situations
evoke ideas of liberation and changes. Carter s female heroes in The Passion of New Eve and Nights
at the Circus are not merely victims of sexual harassment or rape. They are masculine females able to
pose a challenge to all patriarchal norms. Both these novels provide Carter opportunities to redefine
masculinity. She succeeds in crediting her female protagonists with strong degree of autonomy and in
making her male protagonists convincingly drawn human beings. Carter s imaginary flights to worlds
where women are installed as beings of power are prophetic in every sense. Both Fevvers and the New
Eve are symbolic representations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To ensure the safe and free future of women, she deconstructs the myth of the creation of Eve. The
events treated in the novel take place in an unspecified future when urban civilization is on the verge
of collapse. The man named Evelyn regards women as inferior, treating them as sex objects. He is
involved in a torrid love affair with the black prostitute Leilah. But he is duly punished by the
feminists. He is captured by band feminist guerilla fighters who deliver him up to their leader mother,
a parodic portrait of matriarchal superwoman (Contemporary Women s Fiction 18). The Mother of
Beulah is certainly a representation of the revengeful and powerful superwoman that Carter envisages
for the future. The mother uses Evelyn as a material in her experiment to create the perfect women. It
very clearly suggests that it id men, not women, who require liberating from the tyranny of gender

Professor Galgano
With the assassination of President William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, not quite 43, became the
26th and youngest President in the Nation s history (1901 1909). He brought new excitement and
power to the office, vigorously leading Congress and the American public toward progressive reforms
and a strong foreign policy. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27, 1858, in a four story
brownstone in Manhattan, New York. Teddy was the second of four children and was an older brother
to Elliot and had an older sister Corinne. He was also the younger brother to Anna. He had a

Iceland Volcano
The bias view of the filmmaker is that it concentrated on the people at the airport instead of the actual
eruption. There was only one interview which was held with an adult called Grace Schofield who was
a stranded traveller. The filmmaker s point of view is that they only considered the lives of the people
in the airport instead of people who got affected by the volcano.
However, even though they showed scenes of children at the airport their perspective wasn t observed
by the filmmaker. If the children s perspective was included younger people would get a better
realisation of how it feels to be at their state.
Another factor is that even though the volcanic eruption was held in Iceland, the filmmaker
concentrated on people in other countries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though the narrator narrates that even though the delays are costing them a fortune, the airport
manager is not included. The airport manager s response would have helped understand the amount of
money which they are spending as well as the tiring work to control people at the airport.
The film was mainly built to explain the effect the volcano had on Iceland, the people around the
world as well as the airports around the world.
In this video, I have learnt that although the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was a small eruption, it affected
23 European countries around the world due to the wind causing the volcanic ash to be spread across
europe.
Another fact that I learnt is that flying into a cloud of ash is dangerous due to the fact that if tiny
particles of rock, sand and glass get subjected to plane s engine, it is hot enough to cause the engine to
melt and solidify again.
I have learnt that Iceland is constituted in the mid atlantic region where tectonic plates meet and cause
molten rock from underneath the earth s surface to rise to the top which causes, hot mud, geysers as
well as volcanoes to

The Birth Of Pregnancy After C Sections
A majority of mothers prepare for their pregnancies with full intention of a vaginal birth at the end of
their third trimester. However, there is a possibility that medical conditions could arise, such as a baby
who is positioned incorrectly, preeclampsia, or toxemia. Therefore, a cesarean delivery is the safest
way. Most believe that subsequent pregnancies require subsequent C sections. Today, many mothers
are opting for VBACs aka vaginal birth after C sections. A C Section, or Cesarean Section, is a major
surgery to deliver a baby who may suffer from complications or could be breech. They may also be
done in response to the mother and the complications that she may have. It is done by cutting through
the wall of the mother s abdomen. It can be life threatening to the mother and the baby. It can raise the
risk to the mother and could even complicate future pregnancies. American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologist suggest offering the opportunity to pursue a VBAC. An evidence review in 2003
found that overall VBAC success rates were greater than fifty percent (Ebelle 1192 4). This study
shows that the success rate of VBACs are improving each year. C Sections are the most common
surgery in the U.S. and account for about one third of all U.S. births today. Since the 1990s, the C
Section rate has risen sixty percent (Shute: Doctors Urge.... ). The risk of a C Section to a mother
include but are not limited to: weakened uterus, bladder injuries, and/or blood

Stockholm Syndrome Research Paper
A teenager is taken from her home in early morning. She is so scared that she does exactly what the
kidnapper says and follows him out. As the months go by, the victim and her kidnapper develop a very
close bond and they begin to care for each other in a nurturing relationship. This situation probably
sounds insane, but it turns out that this happens often to a victim. The victim becomes relieved after
the kidnapper threatens her and decides to spare her life. The victim begins to feel gratitude because
the kidnapper has given her life and the kidnapper sees it at a real bond forming. Even though the
victim wants to despise the kidnapper for taking her hostage, her longing to survive overpowers her
hatred and Stockholm Syndrome is developed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hostages do not fully understand what has happened and why they do not hate the kidnappers.
They begin to wonder what could have caused them to have sympathy or to favor the kidnapper. It is
very had for the former hostage to get a complete answer of exactly why the condition occurs because
it is very complicated and hard to understand. Over the years of studying the psychological condition,
several factors have been discovered. The hostages begin to think of the kidnapper in a more positive
way after they are given a good place to stay or even after the kidnapper gives an act of kindness by
not killing the hostage but simply injuring them. The hostages begin to sympathize for the captor or
develop a relationship once they begin to understand what might have made the kidnapper do this
crime, and after living with each other for a long period of time, they realize how much they have in
common. Stockholm Syndrome normally occurs because the hostages feel that they must pretend to be
on the kidnapper s side or even do acts of kindness for them so that the kidnappers are less likely to
harm them or kill them. After the long period of pretending, they begin to believe that it is the right
thing to do and they fall into practice of it. After they develop this condition, they have symptoms of
the following: resisting attempts of rescue, defending the captor, refusing to testify against captor or
running away from them and they become in need of treatment. Treatment is key to adjusting to the
life the captive had before the hostage event. Obtaining counselling from psychiatrists and guidance
counselors can be very effective to help the former hostage remember how life was before and why
they are having these feelings which can help make the feelings go away. Support from family
members and friends and talking about the situation with them can help the former hostage to remove

Eating Industry By Michael Pollan Summary
Eating Industry Critique How are we connected to nature? Michael Pollan, a writer, journalist, and
educator wrote about his experience with the food industry. The beginning of the writing is about
Michael Pollan himself. It is an introductory paragraph. This allows the reader to become familiar with
the writer. It is away for us to understand what we might be reading about and why the author would
write about this exact topic. Michael Pollan has always had an interest in the food industry and other
things that connect us with nature. Most of his writings are about agriculture, gardening, etc. . It is
better for the author to write something that interests them because then they can easily explain it. If
they have an interest, then they will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He uses imagery to show the reader what he saw when he first visited. Using imagery also allows the
reader to kind of experience it too. This use of imagery allows the reader to stay entertained and
thinking. Pollan had the right idea in mind because if the readers get bored then your paper is not
good. He tries to be as descriptive as possible. His first experience to the last experience he has at the
pen is drastically different. He writes that the pen is located is nice place with water for the animals.
He notices how the animals have some freedom to roam around. He then immediately changes his
thoughts and feelings about the place. The saying don t judge a book by its cover comes to mind when
I read this. He sees the water is dirty and the pen is also dirty. Pollan asked the farmers why they did
not use the liquefied manure shows his true passion and interest in this field. Most people probably
would not have asked that unless they knew what they were talking about. Pollan also did his own
research to find out the stuff the farmers used for crops were bad for the environment around the farm.
The chemicals would runoff to water systems around them and kill the fish. He continued to do more
and more research to learn about what he was writing

A miniature of his mother was reported missing
Letters to the Editor
To Whom it May Concern, I have had the privilege of being a part of the Frankenstein family since I
was very young and would like to share my thoughts on Miss Justine Moritz who is on trial for our
brother William. I have been acquainted with Justine Moritz for a total of seven years. She took care
of my aunt until she passed away from the scarlet fever. Shortly after she returned to her family home
where she nursed her ailing mother. Justine has always been an affectionate and caring woman.
Although I have heard the evidence against her, I believe that Justine Moritz is innocent. If she had
wanted the miniature of my aunt I would have given it to her because of her devotion to our family.
Sincerely,
Miss Elizabeth Lavenza, Geneva

no idea what people were, what big cities were, or what the strange noises were. I am sorry for the
way I scared people when they saw me, but I was only taking care of my needs of shelter, heat and
food. I wanted someone to be with. I learned how to speak and read while staying in a hovel outside

Stephen King Rhetorical Analysis
Additionally, King builds his credibility with the utilization of ethos in his text in order to convince
them of his argument. By appealing to the readers ethics, they can see how trustworthy King s words
are and then can let themselves be persuaded by his matter of fact tone and professionalism in writing.
King is a realist, which means that he almost always represents things as they really are, which
profoundly helps establish his honest persona. Most of Stephen King s writing represents more than
one tenet, as his stories that he tells about his childhood and road to recovery from drug addiction and
alcoholism can be seen as not only pathos, but and etho as well, as these stories help the readers to
understand what kind of person he is, and how he accomplished all of his success despite a couple of
major roadblocks. This is why it can be seen that King uses pathos most heavily in his writing, by
telling vivid stories, etc. in order to touch upon human emotion towards human experiences/traits,
while also creating a strong voice in his writing as well. The overlapping of these appeals help support
the ethics and sensibility of King s work. There are scores of times where it can be clearly identified
where ethos have been used in his writing. For example, King says I m a slow reader, but i usually get
through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don t read in order to study the craft; i read
because i like to read. Similarly, I don t read to study the art of fiction, but simply because I like
stories Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more
to teach than the good ones (King, pg 145) This helps to support the idea that writing is learned
through reading, and also is learned through the mistakes of other writers. There is no better way to
learn than to look at a piece of writing that has some minor or even major flaws and to analyze the
piece to see what the issue is, and learn from their mistake to better your own writing in the future.
Another one of King s main arguments is that no writer is perfect. There are always things that you
can do to make your writing even better, no matter how small the adjustment may be. It s a learning
process

Iraq War Failure
The invasion and the war in Iraq remains a continuous topic of divisiveness and sensitivity in today s
America. One of the negative evaluation of the war is attributed to the false impression of the length
of the war which lasted seven years, not six months as presumed in 2003. As the invasion initiated, the
ideologies of American government then failed to perceive the large number of troops required,
casualties and the financial toll in the interest of the preventive war doctrine. However, when
weighing the failures of this war, there are successes brought home that relate mostly to the lessons the
American military and the government learned with the use of counterinsurgency tactics after winning
the hearts and minds of Iraqis (Young). Nevertheless, with evaluation through levels of analysis, the
accomplished agenda of ending Saddam Hussein s regime justifies success and failure, mutually.
When one thinks of Iraq war, the two key players are perceived to be George W. Bush and Saddam
Hussein. As leaders of the opposing sides, they are also perceived as the decision makers. In the
individual and sub group levels of analysis, toppling of the Hussein s regime in Iraq was a success.

this war for the generation serving, at home and the future generations. The threat of increasing
terrorism after the attack of September 11, 2001 was one of the driving force of invasion of Iraq.
However, in one analysis the increase of global terrorism today is told to be well contributed by the
conflicts that were fueled by the western presence in Iraq and the surrounding

Wooramaroo Personal And Community Identity
Place is important in relation to personal and community identity because where we live, in a way
defines us. If we live in the country, we can identify with tropes of bush living or a rural lifestyle. If
we are in the city, that place and cityscape can determine our way of life and sense of belonging to that
place.
Wooramaroo is the story told from the viewpoint of female protagonist Cara McGeever s ten year old
son, Scott, and their change of place as immigrants from inner city working class Liverpool to
Outback Australia in the 1970s.
The novels that have influenced my story are Mullumbimby, Breath, and Heat and Light. Cara
McGeever has suffered loss of place and identity through moving to Australia. Personal and
community identity through place will be discussed through female characters Jo Breen in
Mullumbimby, Eva Sanderson in Breath, and Pearl and Amy Kresinger in Heat and Light.
Life in rural Australian presents strong community spirit and opportunities for Cara to belong to that
space. Outback regions have a strong sense of place because their people experience commonalities
such as dealing with the vagaries of nature. As Tuan (2001, 131) states, Attachment to place can
emerge from the experience of nature s intransigence. The locals bond together in time of need, as we
see at the end when the storm comes to Wooramaroo. It is this vital connection to the Outback that
Cara needs in order to build a new identity, and find a new sense of place. Tuan goes on to

Humor Definition Essay
What s wrong with this picture, and why does it seem odd looking? It s that feeling when something
seems so wrong it s funny. It s that expression made about the absurdities, an interesting phenomenon
is called humor. Though it doesn t just appear out of the blue, it is the product of the form comedy.
Through comedy, humor can be expressed using different techniques such as sarcasm and irony. All in
all, the importance it serves in society acts as refuge from life s difficult challenges. Without it, life
would become dull.
To understand the mechanisms, it s best to firstly define the terms. So what is humor? Why do people

Sarcasm is one of the more common types of humor, typically the response to something that is
already obvious, and can be used to hurt or offend or can be used for comic effect. Irony is the
expression of an idea only to mean another, or something totally unexpected to what is already known.
An example could be expressed as a dentist giving out candy on halloween. A pun is a form of humor
that takes a word s meanings expressed differently or creates a double meaning. For example, a double
meaning can be seen in the statement, I really wanted a camouflage shirt, but I couldn t find one. Self
deprecating humor is a form that exploits someone s weaknesses, but they aren t afraid to show them
in a comic sense. This kind of humor is used when something normally avoided becomes a joke and
gets brushed off by the victim of the joke. Finally, dark humor is a kind of humor that touches on more
morbid or offensive material. It s not a form that s used often, but when utilized, its something so
absurdly horrible that it becomes funny. For example, A man went into a library and asked for a book
on suicide, only for the librarian to respond not gonna happen, you won t bring it back. These among

Hopefully, the music industry will look at this as a blessing in disguise for the underground labels.
Looking at this in the short term of things, downloading music could hurt the music industry and their
profits. However, later down the line, it will eventually benefit them. In a study done by Ipsos Reid, it
shows that 81% of the public that download music, often spend at least the same on records or even
more than they did before downloading music from the Internet. The record industry must concentrate
on offering value to the user and adapt to the publics needs (Vives, 2004). The music industry should
try to realize that the ideas behind free downloads can benefit them. They should do what they can to
market more from it, rather than turning their noses up at the technology behind it. They should realize
that they waste more money on fighting the sites that offer free downloads and lobbing Congress to
stop the downloading, they should build a system in which all music is readily available free. Making
sites with easy to follow links to other online music store so that the people can buy music from the

rite, called a handparting, which is the Wiccan version of divorce. However, unlike most divorces
where the couple are fighting over who gets what stuff, Wiccans are meant to remain friends when
parting, and always be open to being together again if they choose (Gregory Meyers).
Perhaps one of the most controversial practices of Wicca is skyclad worship...Skyclad means complete
nudity. Those who practice it in a religious manner are not doing so as a form of sexual deviancy, but
rather to bring themselves closer to their gods. Skyclad worship often features in Wiccan rituals
because Wicca is a fertility religion. It is fairly rare for actual sexual acts to be performed as part of a
public ritual; instead the union of the athame and the chalice are used symbolically (Gregory

Learning Diary During term 2, I have developed skills which are essential for diplomatic career
through workshops from the course on General Diplomatic Studies and Practice. What I have leant
from each module; negotiation, mediation, policy analysis, crisis game, and speech training, can be
elaborated as follows.
Negotiation
The negotiation skills workshop gave me both theoretical and pragmatic skills in negotiation.
Beginning with informal multilateral negotiation in groups was a good way to start and break the ice
among participants. The theoretical part on political ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One important thing that I learnt from this skill is that sometimes you might not need to speak a lot or
try to speak all the time, but the important thing is that you should try to see which actor shares the
same opinion as you and whether that actor is strong enough to act on your behalf. This was really
obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where
I played Iraq. I found that Iraq shared a lot in common with the Arab states, especially Iran on the
Syrian issues. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its
interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the
Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group.
However, there was one thing I found quite unrealistic about this activity. That was the rule on
unanimous agreement. I do not think this can be applied in the real world situation. I think that it
would be better if we do not need to stick on this. The unanimous rule made some players concede too
much, and that did not reflect real international negotiations. The role play on Six party talks was both
fun and useful. This role play gave me a chance to practice more skills on negotiation and chairing.
This activity really showed the difficulties of negotiations on issues that are really critical to national
survival. The North Korean issue was very

Stereotypes In The Simpson
The Simpsons is an animated movie in America, which Matt Groening created to be used in Fox. The
series depicts a satirical of the life experienced by the working class and the family of Simpson
epitomizes the life. The family comprises of five people who are Lisa, Marge, Homer, Bart, as well as
Maggie. The show occurs in a fictional setting of Springfield. In the series, various aspects are
parodied, which consist of the American culture, television, and the condition of humans. In essence,
this paper provides a review of The Simpsons series by looking into different aspects and techniques
depicted that include the author s use of stereotypes, binarisms and metatelevision (Arnold, 2001). The
review Metatelevision is evident in the series The Simpsons and the element brings forth a sense of
self reference, intertextuality, as well as audience awareness. Since its inception, the television tends
to become meta practical. As such, it shows self consciousness and shattering humor to enable the
readers and viewers gain an in depth view of whatever transpires in the series. In the series, the show
acknowledges own creation, and even the artistic creation hence bridging the gap between reality and
fiction. Moreover, The Simpsons show knows how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The series shows the insidiousness of racism across different cultures and the need to do away with it
to promote the best societal outcomes. The show seeps into language to an extent that people fail to
question whatever it brings forth since it seems that has always been the way to go. However, the
various elements used such as metatelevision, use of humor and stereotyping keeps the show lively. As
such, the jokes make people to view whatever the occurrences are going on even though some might
find constraints in establishing a proper view of everything the author tries to talk about in the series

Themes of Shelley s Frankenstein Essay
Mary Shelley discusses the themes of birth and creation, appearance and the necessity of
companionship, love and acceptance in her novel Frankenstein. The themes that are explored in
Frankenstein are relevant to today s modern world. Shelley challenges readers by endorsing and
confronting attitudes and values in her text through the events, circumstances and outcomes that take
place in the novel, thus causing the reader to reflect upon their own lives and in turn the society
around them. Shelley raises in her text an issue that is on the forefront of discussion in the modern
world, that of man taking the place of God and the role of woman in the creation of life. The modern
world is currently grappling over the concerns of cloning, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the main themes in Frankenstein is appearance and acceptance. In today s society and the
society in which Frankenstein is set, people often judge one another solely based on appearance.
Social prejudice is often based on looks. Be it the colour of one s skin, the clothes they wear, facial
features or even ones body expressions. People make snap judgements based on what the eye beholds.
Today s schools are a prime example of this as people are classified instantly and almost unknowingly.
There s a lot of hate around here, Gentry Robler, 16, a sophomore at Santana High. He reels off the
high school cliques: the gothics, the freaks, the dorks, the jocks, the Mexican gangsters, the white
supremacists. Time March 2001 pg. 24 This example of the significance of appearance in modern
society is also echoed in Frankenstein. The parallel between the society in the novel and modern
society is that of snap judgements based solely on appearances. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein is a
perpetrator of such judgements. Victor selected his features as beautiful. Here it is seen Victor s
shallowness as he picked the most perfect body parts and beauteous features, all to be pieced together
in great anticipation. However as one can see, the result is horrific and due to the hideousness of the
wretch that he has created, he abandons him. This same shallowness of judgement due to appearance
again surfaces when Victor accuses the creature of murdering William

The Music Of Music Videos Essay
Music composed for television generate another realm of modes and codes that differ even from the
coding within film. Television has the opportunity to utilise music as an instrument for supporting
narratives within television series and as means for marketing through commercials. Blaine Allan,
explores the relationship between music and television within his journal article, Music Cinema,
Music Video, Music Television. The main focal point of this resource is the function of visual aspects
within the introduction of music videos. However, Blaine Allan does include an interesting insight into
the role of music within other areas of television. Allan s fundamental argument is to highlight the
need for analysis into these music videos in order to gain an understanding of how the visual and
music components are composed and integrated. Individuals researching into the mechanics of music
videos are the primary intended audience, however musicians would benefit from this information as
well. This source, therefore, provides a number of compelling arguments and concepts, especially in
regard to music videos, that explain the differing codes perceived with the addition of the visual
element. Blaine Allan does hold credibility within this field and thus provides a good sense of
reliability which is enhanced by his objective view throughout the article. However, this journal
positions at a low range in regard to usefulness as the arguments within this essay do not focus around

Honors Convocation Speech
Barbara Makeda Blake Hannahand is a Rastafarian woman from Jamaica. She came to TCU to visit
multiple classes, give the Honors Convocation Address, and to give an introduction to a film featuring
herself. She answered many questions in classes to help the students learn more about the Rastafarian
religion, her culture, and a few personal stories of how her culture and religion has made a huge
impact to her life. Her introduction to the film she was featured in was very short and not very
informational, but her part in the film itself was interesting. The speech she gave at the honors
convocation was more informative. She was able to convey her message with personal stories, and
was successful in teaching her beliefs in a short time.

Makonnen, after she was told for 9 years that she could not have a child. These are just two examples
of God answering her prayers. She told the class to stay faithful and to always pray. She also gave her

Multinational Corporations Vs. Small And Medium...
The fundamental goal of every company is to maximise profit to make money. That is the main reason
people create businesses whether it be the large corporations or the small and medium enterprises
(SMEs). Because of gloablisation, firms are competing in a highly competitive market where there is
increasing pressure to find ways to perform better to get that above average returns. However, there is
one thing other than economies of scale that greatly disadvantage the SMEs from the large
multinational corporations (MNCs) and that is profit shifting. First of all, MNCs are organisations that
operate in more than one country. Profit shifting is when MNCs utilise the differences in tax laws to
shift income to low tax affiliates and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a journal article by Bartelsman and Beetsma (2000), they looked at the presence of profit shifting in
response to the disparity of the corporate tax rates among several OECD countries. They used sectoral
data as a method for their analysis. They have found that the magniture of profit shifting is sufficiently
great and worthy of attention. They estimate that a one percent unilateral increase in tax rate will result
in a three percent decline in corporate tax revenues, where the organisation s profit is unchanged.
Moreover, the researchers found that having stricter enforcement in an already high tax jurisdiction
will have a negative impact on their tax revenues and that real activity is transferred to countries with
lower tax rates or more lenient enforcement.
As mentioned previously, increasing pressures of competition and the goal of making more profits are
the reasons why organisations try to find ways to minimise their costs. However, profit shifting is
done because they saw the substantial disparity of corporate tax rates among countries and thus, an
opportunity to minimise costs (Bartelsman Beetsma, 2000; Holtzblatt et al., 2015). Exhibit 1 shows
the corporate tax rates in developed countries (see Appendix). Australia s corporate tax rate is 30%,
which is the 4th highest (tied with Mexico) among OECD countries, where it is topped by the US at
35%, France at 34.43%, and Belgium at 33%. Holtzblatt et

Student Loan Crisis Is A Crisis
Seventy percent of college graduates left school with almost thirty thousand dollars in student loans.
(Johnson, Student Loans ) There is currently a debate about whether or not student loans are a crisis or
if this crisis is just a myth. In the article, Here s Your Crisis:
Student Loan Debt Isn t A Myth, it describes how student loans are a huge crisis, and the article, The
Myth of the Student Loan Crisis is about how college students loans do not amount to a crisis. The
student loan crisis is a legitimate problem, not a myth. College students do not realize the risks they
take when they acquire student loans. Student loans can and do have negative effects on the economy
and there are also hardships the students will face in the future.
One reason that supports the issue of student loans being a crisis is the negative effects on the
economy. For example, students who are in debt cannot spend money on expensive items.
People who want nice cars, jacked up trucks, enormous boats, and other items will not be able to
afford these items. Also, student loans are responsible for the second highest form of consumer debt.
(Denhart, College Crisis Is Crippling ) Higher national debt means fewer jobs and increased interest
rates. Lastly, is the inability to start new businesses, which would benefit the economy, due to income
debt ratio. These three examples show the negative effects on the economy from student loans.
In addition, students will take on these loans without

Analysis Of The Book A Good Story
A good story, in my opinion, will have certain elements that keep a reader interested. Of course the
most obvious of those is the story line itself. No one will continue to read if they are not intrigued by
the plot. Secondly and equally important are the characters. Even if the story is captivating there is
little interest in continuing on if the characters are not either incredibly likable or easily feared or
hated. A strongly developed character will always keep a reader following along. In this particular
instance its the monsters that makes the play.
When it comes to the topic of monsters, most of us will readily agree that they are bad. Where this
agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of what makes a monster. Although ... Show more

In order to show the importance of a reader response to a story, I will attempt to show how at least
three characters in Shakespeare s The Tempest could have been perceived as the monster of the tale.
Stephen T. Asma writes that good monster stories can transmit moral truths to us by showing us
examples of dignity and depravity without preaching or proselytizing. (pg 64) Considering that people
can live by very different morals, monsters can be seen in so many different forms. The Tempest is a
perfect example of this. There are at least fifteen characters in the play and of those characters there
are at least three that can be viewed as being a monster or at least possessing some monster like
qualities.
One of the most obvious choices as the monster of the play could be Antonio. He can be found to say
Nobel Sebastian, thou lett st thy fortune sleep die, rather; wink st whiles thou art waking. (2.1.210) in
reference to the sleeping King Alonso. Antonio makes this comment to the king s brother, in order to
convince him that murdering the king is his best chance of taking the throne for himself. In Act 3,
scene 3 Antonio can again be seen speaking of the king s murder when he speaks the line, I am right
glad that he s so out of hope. Do not for one repulse, forgo the purpose that you resolved t effect.
(3.3.11) In some opinions a person who is lacking morals and has become so greedy that they are
willing to plot and plan a murder can be viewed as the most

Poverty Is The State Of Having Little Or No Money
Poverty is the state of having little or no money, goods, circumstance of being poor. One out of seven
people in the United States live in poverty, Approximately 50 million Americans one in six people
struggle with hunger, many are children. How is the U.S. poverty line determined? First established in
1965 by the social security administration, the poverty line was based on an assumption that the
average family must spend about one third of its total income on food. The official poverty line was
determined by a family market basket at low cost food budget that contains a minimum level of
nutrition for a family multiplied by three to allow for nonfood cost such as rent and utilities. At a
poverty line of $1.25per day, more than 1.4 billion people live in absolute poverty which is a condition
that exists when people do not have the means to secure the most basic necessities of life. While
others live in relative poverty that is a condition that exists when people can afford basic such as food,
clothing, and shelter but cannot maintain an average standard of living in comparison to that of other
members of their society or group. The United States has a number of class divisions that are
characterized by widely diverse lifestyles and life chances. Upper class is the wealthiest and most
powerful class, Upper middle class is composed of professional s (ex. Attorneys, physicians). Middle

The Status And Perception Of Women
Literature Review Draft 2
For centuries, the status and perception of women has been a disputed and controversial subject. Due
to precarious political or social standings, even women in power were subject to the judgement and
power of men. When considering the portrayal of exceptional women throughout history, rarely has a
woman been able to fully embrace the stage without reservations. An analysis of research texts and
journal articles reveals and connects the way that a queen of ancient times and one of the English
Renaissance controlled their image, were affected by societal views of women, and were ultimately
depicted. Scholarship on Cleopatra and Queen Elizabeth I relays the idea that society and patriarchy
led to their respective authorities and depictions. Mary Hamer, author of Signs of Cleopatra, a
historical research text, investigates Cleopatra s cultural significance from her earliest representations
in her own time to her status as a symbol in modern times. In the chapter, Cleopatra: housewife, she
discusses Cleopatra s image between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, a time that spans the
invention of the printing press and the proliferance of Elizabethan playwright, William Shakespeare.
Hamer uses the work of Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Jan de Bray, which was spread rapidly due to the
printing press, as a lens to view Cleopatra s image. In regards to this image, she notes the changing
attitude towards women, a result of the Reformation creating an

Friendship in the Kite Runner Essay
The line between a friend and an enemy is thinner than one can ever imagine. In the words of Henry
David Thoreau, True friendship is never serene (ThinkExist.com). The job of a friend is so much more
than a companion, to pass the time with. They help us shape our life, and they re responsible to be that
little voice in our ear, to help us analyze our actions and views. Through Amir s relationships, The
Kite Runner shows the true role of a friend to point and guide us even when we don t agree; total
devotion can ruin not only a friendship, but a life. In Hossini s novel, there are plenty of examples of a
true friendship, which isn t afraid to criticize and be truthful. The simplest is Amir s wife, Soraya.

turn out to be one of the quickest cathartic realizations for Amir, as he realizes the true nature of his
country. Farid becomes friends with Amir as he learns his true purpose for being in Afghanistan, and
his friendship is extremely useful to Amir. It isn t the happiest, and it doesn t last very long, but it
helps him find Sohrab, and more importantly, find himself. Farid is completely truthful with Amir, to
the point of being blunt, and probably saves Amir s life many times. Saying farewell, Amir tells him I
didn t know how to say thank you... You ve done so much for me (Hosseini 792). Amir realizes that
their friendship, though rocky, was true and did so much good in both their lives. Perhaps the longest
best example of a true friend throughout the novel is Amir s godfather, Rahim Kahn. Even before his
true relationship with Amir, he is Baba s greatest friend. Even when it means standing up to Baba, he
points him in the right direction many times. After hearing a particularly vehement rant about Amir, he

Moll Flanders As A Realist Characters
When looking at John Gass article, Moll Flanders and the Bastard Birth of Realist Character, he
approaches the conflicting question about how the audience is meant to feel about the main
protagonist, Moll, and whether we are meant to respect her or not. While heavily focusing on the
aspects of genre theory and irony, Gass argues that it is the multiple genre expectations that give Moll
the reputation of being deep and complex, which leads to her controversial character. He uses
historical context to show how Moll can be seen as a villain, but continues to argue that it is primarily
the expectations brought on by genre theory that make people see her as a villain, based on those
certain expectations. Gass interpretation using genre theory analysis, irony, and historical context to
deeply analyze the novel strengthen his argument that our feelings towards Moll aren t the main
argument, but instead, that Moll is a true realist character. Gass discusses Moll Flanders and the text s
complexity involving the main protagonist, Moll, questioning whether the audience is supposed to feel
she is evil and villainous, or just someone has the ability to grow from her past as a criminal. He
begins his argument by stating, in both life and literature, we tend to think of persons as existing in
excess of stereotype: as real selves that subsist apart from their special roles and the attempts of others
to define them (111). Being a woman in the 1700 s, Moll is expected to be married to

  • 2. Taking a Look at Gang Violence Many American families share similar stories of their loved ones being murdered by violent street gang members. These victims often had nothing to do with the gangs or gang members that killed them. A street gang is a group of people who commonly involve themselves in heinous crimes such as murder, assault, drug dealing, robbery, and car theft. These gangs are present all over the nation and are starting to spread to other countries. It is imperative for the United States government to put a stop to gangs and gang violence. Ed Gottesman and Richard Brown agree that for a group to be considered a gang it needs six key elements: a collection of individuals, the use of symbols, special forms of communication, permanence, a sense of turf, and involvement in crime. Gottesman and Brown go on to say, What distinguishes a gang from other groups is its involvement in crime, which is often heavy and recognized as a key feature of membership. This means that all gangs are involved in crimes, the number one reason why the United States needs to put a stop to gang violence. Gangs form for four main reasons: a need for family and companionship, basic needs such as food, a higher social status or appeal, and protection. When there is a large migration or immigration of people, gangs tend to increase in size because there are more people looking for these four basic needs. During the 1950s to the 1970s, gangs grew greatly in the four regions of the United States, the East, Midwest, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Theory Of An Organization Organizations are groups of people working together to achieve a common goal. The organizations theories correlate together in order for organizations to sustain functionality. In all organizations there is a common unit of power that directs the organization toward a common goal. Within the Department of Health and Human Resources, the source of power is the commissioner, and the direction of the department is to have zero child fatalities and maintain safety of children. The classical model focuses on the structure of the organization. The decision making starts at the top, with the person in power and trickles down to the employees in the organizations. Hence, the person in power has the authority and decision making capability. This is also known as bureaucracy, which occurs within a government institution such as; when meetings occur, the commissioner will make the final decisions about goals and how to implement those goals. All organizations recognize that decisions have to be made. The decision theory is similar to the classical model in how decisions are made and who makes the decisions. The person in power makes the decision, and the ultimate outcome is to achieve a common goal. Decisions are made on rationale when possible, but achieving a perfect goal is not the ultimate goal. When conflict occurs it is embraced, and organization work to accommodate or even coerce members to achieve common goals. Human relations theory is derived from the machine ... • 4. Feminism In Angela Carter Angela Carter does not speak of a Feminism that succumbs to patriarchal pressure. She allows certain cracks and fissures to become visible in patriarchal structure and roles. Her treatment of the characters and situations is notably ambitious. Her reworking of myths and weaving of imaginary situations evoke ideas of liberation and changes. Carter s female heroes in The Passion of New Eve and Nights at the Circus are not merely victims of sexual harassment or rape. They are masculine females able to pose a challenge to all patriarchal norms. Both these novels provide Carter opportunities to redefine masculinity. She succeeds in crediting her female protagonists with strong degree of autonomy and in making her male protagonists convincingly drawn human beings. Carter s imaginary flights to worlds where women are installed as beings of power are prophetic in every sense. Both Fevvers and the New Eve are symbolic representations ... The events treated in the novel take place in an unspecified future when urban civilization is on the verge of collapse. The man named Evelyn regards women as inferior, treating them as sex objects. He is involved in a torrid love affair with the black prostitute Leilah. But he is duly punished by the feminists. He is captured by band feminist guerilla fighters who deliver him up to their leader mother, a parodic portrait of matriarchal superwoman (Contemporary Women s Fiction 18). The Mother of Beulah is certainly a representation of the revengeful and powerful superwoman that Carter envisages for the future. The mother uses Evelyn as a material in her experiment to create the perfect women. It very clearly suggests that it id men, not women, who require liberating from the tyranny of gender ... There was only one interview which was held with an adult called Grace Schofield who was a stranded traveller. The filmmaker s point of view is that they only considered the lives of the people in the airport instead of people who got affected by the volcano. However, even though they showed scenes of children at the airport their perspective wasn t observed by the filmmaker. In this video, I have learnt that although the Eyjafjallajokull volcano was a small eruption, it affected 23 European countries around the world due to the wind causing the volcanic ash to be spread across europe. Another fact that I learnt is that flying into a cloud of ash is dangerous due to the fact that if tiny particles of rock, sand and glass get subjected to plane s engine, it is hot enough to cause the engine to melt and solidify again. • 7. The Birth Of Pregnancy After C Sections A majority of mothers prepare for their pregnancies with full intention of a vaginal birth at the end of their third trimester. However, there is a possibility that medical conditions could arise, such as a baby who is positioned incorrectly, preeclampsia, or toxemia. Therefore, a cesarean delivery is the safest way. Most believe that subsequent pregnancies require subsequent C sections. Today, many mothers are opting for VBACs aka vaginal birth after C sections. A C Section, or Cesarean Section, is a major surgery to deliver a baby who may suffer from complications or could be breech. They may also be done in response to the mother and the complications that she may have. It is done by cutting through the wall of the mother s abdomen. It can be life threatening to the mother and the baby. It can raise the risk to the mother and could even complicate future pregnancies. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist suggest offering the opportunity to pursue a VBAC. An evidence review in 2003 found that overall VBAC success rates were greater than fifty percent (Ebelle 1192 4). This study shows that the success rate of VBACs are improving each year. C Sections are the most common surgery in the U.S. and account for about one third of all U.S. births today. Since the 1990s, the C Section rate has risen sixty percent (Shute: Doctors Urge.... ). They begin to wonder what could have caused them to have sympathy or to favor the kidnapper. It is very had for the former hostage to get a complete answer of exactly why the condition occurs because it is very complicated and hard to understand. Over the years of studying the psychological condition, several factors have been discovered. The hostages begin to think of the kidnapper in a more positive way after they are given a good place to stay or even after the kidnapper gives an act of kindness by not killing the hostage but simply injuring them. The hostages begin to sympathize for the captor or develop a relationship once they begin to understand what might have made the kidnapper do this crime, and after living with each other for a long period of time, they realize how much they have in common. Stockholm Syndrome normally occurs because the hostages feel that they must pretend to be on the kidnapper s side or even do acts of kindness for them so that the kidnappers are less likely to harm them or kill them. After the long period of pretending, they begin to believe that it is the right thing to do and they fall into practice of it. After they develop this condition, they have symptoms of the following: resisting attempts of rescue, defending the captor, refusing to testify against captor or running away from them and they become in need of treatment. Treatment is key to adjusting to the life the captive had before the hostage event. Obtaining counselling from psychiatrists and guidance counselors can be very effective to help the former hostage remember how life was before and why they are having these feelings which can help make the feelings go away. Michael Pollan has always had an interest in the food industry and other things that connect us with nature. Most of his writings are about agriculture, gardening, etc. . • 11. Stephen King Rhetorical Analysis Additionally, King builds his credibility with the utilization of ethos in his text in order to convince them of his argument. By appealing to the readers ethics, they can see how trustworthy King s words are and then can let themselves be persuaded by his matter of fact tone and professionalism in writing. King is a realist, which means that he almost always represents things as they really are, which profoundly helps establish his honest persona. Most of Stephen King s writing represents more than one tenet, as his stories that he tells about his childhood and road to recovery from drug addiction and alcoholism can be seen as not only pathos, but and etho as well, as these stories help the readers to understand what kind of person he is, and how he accomplished all of his success despite a couple of major roadblocks. This is why it can be seen that King uses pathos most heavily in his writing, by telling vivid stories, etc. in order to touch upon human emotion towards human experiences/traits, while also creating a strong voice in his writing as well. The overlapping of these appeals help support the ethics and sensibility of King s work. There are scores of times where it can be clearly identified where ethos have been used in his writing. For example, King says I m a slow reader, but i usually get through seventy or eighty books a year, mostly fiction. I don t read in order to study the craft; i read because i like to read. Similarly, I don t read to study the art of fiction, but simply because I like stories Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones (King, pg 145) This helps to support the idea that writing is learned through reading, and also is learned through the mistakes of other writers. There is no better way to learn than to look at a piece of writing that has some minor or even major flaws and to analyze the piece to see what the issue is, and learn from their mistake to better your own writing in the future. Another one of King s main arguments is that no writer is perfect. There are always things that you can do to make your writing even better, no matter how small the adjustment may be. It s a learning process ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Iraq War Failure The invasion and the war in Iraq remains a continuous topic of divisiveness and sensitivity in today s America. One of the negative evaluation of the war is attributed to the false impression of the length of the war which lasted seven years, not six months as presumed in 2003. As the invasion initiated, the ideologies of American government then failed to perceive the large number of troops required, casualties and the financial toll in the interest of the preventive war doctrine. However, when weighing the failures of this war, there are successes brought home that relate mostly to the lessons the American military and the government learned with the use of counterinsurgency tactics after winning the hearts and minds of Iraqis (Young). Nevertheless, with evaluation through levels of analysis, the accomplished agenda of ending Saddam Hussein s regime justifies success and failure, mutually. When one thinks of Iraq war, the two key players are perceived to be George W. Bush and Saddam Hussein. As leaders of the opposing sides, they are also perceived as the decision makers. Wooramaroo is the story told from the viewpoint of female protagonist Cara McGeever s ten year old son, Scott, and their change of place as immigrants from inner city working class Liverpool to Outback Australia in the 1970s. The novels that have influenced my story are Mullumbimby, Breath, and Heat and Light. Cara McGeever has suffered loss of place and identity through moving to Australia. Through my research, I found out that Wicca draws from the Old Traditions of Witchcraft (Herne) and that they are pretty similar, but they are not the same. The Celtic Connection explains that, one can be a Witch, without being a Wiccan, just as a person can be a Christian, without being a Baptist (Herne). Also, Wicca is considered a religion, but Witchcraft is not. The Celtic Connection describes the Wicca Religion as a very peaceful, harmonious and balanced way of life which promotes oneness with the divine and all which exists (Herne). If a couple is still serious after this, they may go through a second rite of handfasting, which usually involves a legal marriage agreement. There is also a third rite, called a handparting, which is the Wiccan version of divorce. However, unlike most divorces where the couple are fighting over who gets what stuff, Wiccans are meant to remain friends when parting, and always be open to being together again if they choose (Gregory Meyers). Perhaps one of the most controversial practices of Wicca is skyclad worship...Skyclad means complete nudity. Those who practice it in a religious manner are not doing so as a form of sexual deviancy, but rather to bring themselves closer to their gods. One important thing that I learnt from this skill is that sometimes you might not need to speak a lot or try to speak all the time, but the important thing is that you should try to see which actor shares the same opinion as you and whether that actor is strong enough to act on your behalf. This was really obvious in the activity of multilateral negotiations on negotiating intervention in a civil conflict where I played Iraq. I found that Iraq shared a lot in common with the Arab states, especially Iran on the Syrian issues. Balancing interests in the negotiation through the Arab countries helped Iraq protect its interests. Without speaking much, but allying very well with Iran and balancing the interests with the Arab states, it turned out that I gained the highest score in my group. However, there was one thing I found quite unrealistic about this activity. That was the rule on unanimous agreement. I do not think this can be applied in the real world situation. I think that it would be better if we do not need to stick on this. The unanimous rule made some players concede too much, and that did not reflect real international negotiations. In today s society and the society in which Frankenstein is set, people often judge one another solely based on appearance. Social prejudice is often based on looks. Be it the colour of one s skin, the clothes they wear, facial features or even ones body expressions. People make snap judgements based on what the eye beholds. Today s schools are a prime example of this as people are classified instantly and almost unknowingly. There s a lot of hate around here, Gentry Robler, 16, a sophomore at Santana High. The parallel between the society in the novel and modern society is that of snap judgements based solely on appearances. In the novel, Victor Frankenstein is a perpetrator of such judgements. Victor selected his features as beautiful. Here it is seen Victor s shallowness as he picked the most perfect body parts and beauteous features, all to be pieced together in great anticipation. The main focal point of this resource is the function of visual aspects within the introduction of music videos. That is the main reason people create businesses whether it be the large corporations or the small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Because of gloablisation, firms are competing in a highly competitive market where there is increasing pressure to find ways to perform better to get that above average returns. However, there is one thing other than economies of scale that greatly disadvantage the SMEs from the large multinational corporations (MNCs) and that is profit shifting. First of all, MNCs are organisations that operate in more than one country. Profit shifting is when MNCs utilise the differences in tax laws to shift income to low tax affiliates and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In a journal article by Bartelsman and Beetsma (2000), they looked at the presence of profit shifting in response to the disparity of the corporate tax rates among several OECD countries. They used sectoral data as a method for their analysis. They have found that the magniture of profit shifting is sufficiently great and worthy of attention. They estimate that a one percent unilateral increase in tax rate will result in a three percent decline in corporate tax revenues, where the organisation s profit is unchanged. Moreover, the researchers found that having stricter enforcement in an already high tax jurisdiction will have a negative impact on their tax revenues and that real activity is transferred to countries with lower tax rates or more lenient enforcement. As mentioned previously, increasing pressures of competition and the goal of making more profits are the reasons why organisations try to find ways to minimise their costs. However, profit shifting is done because they saw the substantial disparity of corporate tax rates among countries and thus, an opportunity to minimise costs (Bartelsman Beetsma, 2000; Holtzblatt et al., 2015). In the article, Here s Your Crisis: Student Loan Debt Isn t A Myth, it describes how student loans are a huge crisis, and the article, The Myth of the Student Loan Crisis is about how college students loans do not amount to a crisis. The student loan crisis is a legitimate problem, not a myth. College students do not realize the risks they take when they acquire student loans. Student loans can and do have negative effects on the economy and there are also hardships the students will face in the future. One reason that supports the issue of student loans being a crisis is the negative effects on the economy. For example, students who are in debt cannot spend money on expensive items. People who want nice cars, jacked up trucks, enormous boats, and other items will not be able to afford these items. Also, student loans are responsible for the second highest form of consumer debt. (Denhart, College Crisis Is Crippling ) Higher national debt means fewer jobs and increased interest rates. No one will continue to read if they are not intrigued by the plot. Secondly and equally important are the characters. Even if the story is captivating there is little interest in continuing on if the characters are not either incredibly likable or easily feared or hated. A strongly developed character will always keep a reader following along. In this particular instance its the monsters that makes the play. In order to show the importance of a reader response to a story, I will attempt to show how at least three characters in Shakespeare s The Tempest could have been perceived as the monster of the tale. Stephen T. Asma writes that good monster stories can transmit moral truths to us by showing us examples of dignity and depravity without preaching or proselytizing. There are at least fifteen characters in the play and of those characters there are at least three that can be viewed as being a monster or at least possessing some monster like qualities. One out of seven people in the United States live in poverty, Approximately 50 million Americans one in six people struggle with hunger, many are children. How is the U.S. poverty line determined? First established in 1965 by the social security administration, the poverty line was based on an assumption that the average family must spend about one third of its total income on food. • 31. The Status And Perception Of Women Literature Review Draft 2 For centuries, the status and perception of women has been a disputed and controversial subject. Due to precarious political or social standings, even women in power were subject to the judgement and power of men. When considering the portrayal of exceptional women throughout history, rarely has a woman been able to fully embrace the stage without reservations. An analysis of research texts and journal articles reveals and connects the way that a queen of ancient times and one of the English Renaissance controlled their image, were affected by societal views of women, and were ultimately depicted. Scholarship on Cleopatra and Queen Elizabeth I relays the idea that society and patriarchy led to their respective authorities and depictions. Mary Hamer, author of Signs of Cleopatra, a historical research text, investigates Cleopatra s cultural significance from her earliest representations in her own time to her status as a symbol in modern times. In the chapter, Cleopatra: housewife, she discusses Cleopatra s image between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries, a time that spans the invention of the printing press and the proliferance of Elizabethan playwright, William Shakespeare. Hamer uses the work of Petrarch, Boccaccio, and Jan de Bray, which was spread rapidly due to the printing press, as a lens to view Cleopatra s image. • 33. Moll Flanders As A Realist Characters When looking at John Gass article, Moll Flanders and the Bastard Birth of Realist Character, he approaches the conflicting question about how the audience is meant to feel about the main protagonist, Moll, and whether we are meant to respect her or not. While heavily focusing on the aspects of genre theory and irony, Gass argues that it is the multiple genre expectations that give Moll the reputation of being deep and complex, which leads to her controversial character. He uses historical context to show how Moll can be seen as a villain, but continues to argue that it is primarily the expectations brought on by genre theory that make people see her as a villain, based on those certain expectations. Gass interpretation using genre theory analysis, irony, and historical context to deeply analyze the novel strengthen his argument that our feelings towards Moll aren t the main argument, but instead, that Moll is a true realist character. Gass discusses Moll Flanders and the text s complexity involving the main protagonist, Moll, questioning whether the audience is supposed to feel she is evil and villainous, or just someone has the ability to grow from her past as a criminal. He begins his argument by stating, in both life and literature, we tend to think of persons as existing in excess of stereotype: as real selves that subsist apart from their special roles and the attempts of others to define them (111).
