INTRODUCTION
Lecture method is the most commonly used method of
teaching science. It is a teacher-controlled and information
centered approach in which the teacher works as a sole-
resource in classroom instruction.

MEANING AND DEFINITION
 The word lecture comes from the Latin word lectus, from the 14th
century, which translates roughly into “to read”. It wasn’t until the 16th
century that the word was used to describe oral instruction given by a
teacher in front of an audience of learners.
 The lecture method is defined as the method of teaching in which the
presenter or the teacher teaches orally to a group of class
participants. Lectures are used to convey critical information theories
and enquiries.
4
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
• The lecture method is most commonly followed in colleges
and schools in big classes. This method is not quite suitable
for to realise the real aim of teaching biological science
5
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
Wasley, Edgar B, Wronski, Stanley suggested that the lecture method serves
four basic purposes:-
 To motivate
 To clarify
 To review
 To expand
6

PLANNING THE LECTURE
Before starting to prepare a lecture, the teacher must be able to
answer four basic questions:-
 Who is your audience?-WHO
 What is the purpose of your lecture?-WHY
 How much time is available?-HOW LONG
 What is the subject matter?-WHAT
7

PURPOSE OF LECTURE
The objectives of lecture may be to,
1.Give general information on a subject.
2.Gain acceptance for a new point of view.
3.Change basic attitude
4.Teach a particular skill.
8

SITUATIONS WHERE LECTURE METHOD CAN BE USED
 In the introduction of a new topic.
 In the introduction of new instruments.
 Revising and summarising lessons.
 Covering the syllabus quickly.
 Presenting the history of plants and animals.
9

PHASES OF LECTURE METHOD
• 1. Preparatory Phase (Warm up Phase)
• 2. Development Phase
• 3. Consolidation Phase
10
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
PREPARATORy PHASE (WARM UP PHASE)
Students are to be prepared to receive the contents of a
lecture
To arouse the interest level of students, variety of formal
& informal techniques can be used for motivation
In this phase the teacher relates the contents of the
lecture to the previous knowledge of the students
11
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
2. DEvELOPMENT PHASE
Entire body of the lecture is delivered in this phase
Activities are conducted
Proper illustration, suitable examples, comparison,
differentiation and audio visual technology are used
12
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
3. CONSOLIDATION PHASE
It’s an end part of the lecture
In this phase the lectures pin points the important aspects of the
lectures once again by summarizing
Proper reviewing can be done to check the level of
understanding by asking questions.
Provide assignments, feedback and can relate the topic to the
future learning content.
13

SKILLS ASSOCIATED WITH GOOD LECTURE
14
1. Use of body language
2. Use of
communication
boosters
3. Varying the stimulus
4. Voice modulation
5. Use of proper
language
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
AREA OF APPLICATION OF LECTURE METHOD
To introduce new and difficult topic
To revise the topics already covered
To give some background of a certain topic
To present the life histories of great scientist and their struggles
and achievement in life
To explain about certain procedures
To impart factual knowledge
To explain too deep theoretical factors
15

A GOOD LECTURER MUST TAKE CARE OF……….
16
 TIME
 AUDIENCE
 SUBJECT MATTER
 POSTURE
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
17
• APPEARANCE • MANNERS
• GESTURE
• VOICE
• VOCABULARY
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
The speaker’s content expertise.
The language used.
Use of audio visual aids.
Attention and intellectual participation of pupils.
18
HOW TO EvALUATE A LECTURE…
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
ADvANTAGES OF LECTURE METHOD
It is quite economical method because it is possible to
handle a large number of students at a time & no laboratory
equipment, aids, materials are required.
Using this method the knowledge can be imparted to
students quickly & prescribed syllabus can be covered in
short time.
It simplifies the task of teacher as he/she dominates the
lesson for 70-85% of the lesson time & students just listen to
him.
19
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
DISADvANTAGES OF LECTURE METHOD
Students participation is negligible and students
become passive recipients of information.
In this method knowledge is imparted so rapidly that
weak students developed a hatred for learning.
No place for “Learning by doing”.
20
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani
DEMERITS ARE ….
21-05-2021 Dr. C. Beulah Jayarani 21
• MEMORY BASED
• SPOON FEEDING
• TOO RAPID
• TEACHER CENTERED
• NO CRITICAL THINKING
CONCLUSION
This method of teaching can be made more beneficial if the
teacher encourages his students to take notes during the
lesson
After the lesson, teacher can give his students sometime for
asking questions and answer their queries without any
hesitation.
If a teacher can introduce some humour in his/her lesson it
would keep students interested in his lesson
