What is Lecture Method?
 Lecture is derived from Latin word Lectare which
means to read aloud.
 A lecture is an oral presentation intended to
present information or teach people about a
particular subject, for example by a university or
college teacher.
 Lectures are used to convey critical information,
history, background, theories, and equations.
 Teacher talks more or less continuously to class.
 The class listen and takes notes.
DEFINITION
 Oxford Dictionary : “Lecture method is
talk giving specified information to class
or long serious speech”.
 L . Ghanshyam Das: “The lecture method
is an attractive and easy method of
teaching. It gives both teacher and pupils
a great sense of satisfaction with their
progress”.
PURPOSE OF LECTURE
The objectives of lecture may be to,
1.To give overview of a large topic
2.To give background of new topic
3.To clarify the terms and faulty ideas
4.To develop the interest in the students
5.To save time of both teacher and students
6.To make summaries and give review
Advantages of lecture Method
1. It is quite economical method because it is
possible to handle a large number of students
at a time & no laboratory equipments, aids,
materials are required.
Advantages of lecture Method
2. Using this method the knowledge can be imparted to
students quickly & prescribed syllabus can be
covered in short time.
Advantages of lecture Method
3. Some good lectures , delivered by the teacher may
motivate, instigate and inspire a student for
creative thinking.
Advantages of lecture Method
4. It is very- very useful for teachers to introduce
new topics in the higher classes.
Advantages of lecture Method
5. It develops the habit of concentration and
taking rapid notes in the class room.
Advantages of lecture Method
6. More information can be imparted by the
teacher in a short time period.
Advantages of lecture Method
.It is quite attractive & easy to follow and also by
this method teacher can develop his own style of
teaching and exposition.
Disadvantages
In this method the students participation is
negligible and students become passive
recipients of information.
Disadvantages
In this method we are never sure if the students
are concentrating and understanding the subject
matter being taught to them by teacher.
Disadvantages
In this method knowledge is imparted so
rapidly that weak students developed a hatred
for learning.
Disadvantages
In this method there is no place of ‘learning
by doing’ and thus teaching by this method
strikes at the very root of science.
Disadvantages
It is an undemocratic and authoritarian
method as students cannot challenge or
question the verdict of the teacher.
Disadvantages
It does not provide for corrective feedback
and remedial help to slow learners.
Disadvantages
 Due to one way teaching- learning process, it
is not helpful in developing the logical and
analytical power in the students.
Disadvantages
It doesn’t take into the account of previous
knowledge of students and it does not take
cater to individual needs and differences of
students.
