KFD is a viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted through tick bites which was first recognized in 1957 in India. It is caused by the Kyasanur Forest disease virus and primarily affects humans who visit forests for work. Ticks of the genus Haemaphysalis transmit the virus between small mammal reservoirs and humans, with monkeys amplifying the virus. Symptoms include fever, headache, and hemorrhaging, and the case fatality rate is 5-10%. There is no specific treatment, but supportive care and vaccination can help control outbreaks.
