PhD Defense: Enabling Smart Homes Using Web TechnologiesAndreas Kamilaris
New technological advancements allow the Internet to penetrate in embedded computing. IPv6 envisions to merge the physical and the digital world, through the Internet. The Web of Things interconnects the expanding ecosystem of Internet-enabled embedded devices, by reusing well-accepted and understood Web principles. In this talk, we will present the development of a Web-based application framework for smart homes, supporting concurrent interaction from multiple family members. By employing intermediate request queues, associated with the physical devices of the smart home, our analysis shows that we can mask transmission failures and faults that occur in the wireless environment, thus enhancing the performance of smart home operations by means of fast retransmissions, load balancing and request priority techniques. In our analysis, we also derive formulas for estimating the response time of requests and for setting the request queue retransmission interval, an important design parameter of the system. In this way, reliability and timely responses from the devices are ensured. We demonstrate that, by using the Web as application layer, flexible applications for smart homes can be built, on top of heterogeneous embedded devices, with little effort. We address many issues related to Web-enabling household devices, from their local discovery and service description to the uniform interaction with them. Our technical evaluation indicates that the process of Web-enabling physical devices offers satisfactory performance, mainly in terms of response time and energy consumption, while modern Web techniques such as Web caching and event-based Web messaging can contribute in facilitating smart home operations. Through various case studies, we demonstrate that Web-based, energy-aware smart homes have the potential to provide flexible solutions to challenges such as energy awareness and conservation, and be smoothly integrated with the smart grid of electricity. Finally, this talk discusses some future research challenges, beyond the home environment, in which Web-based smart homes may constitute crucial elements in order to address them effectively.
The project titled ’IoT Home Automation System’ is designed and implemented using Arduino, PHP and MySQL. The project aims provide user with an automated means to control the devices in their homes using a web application from anywhere on the planet.
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to analyze the increasing economic feasibility of smart homes. Rapid improvements in sensors, integrated circuits, transceivers, displays, mobile phones, and wireless networks are causing the cost to fall and the performance to rise for smart home-related features. It is becoming increasingly inexpensive and easy to control a wide number of appliances with mobile phones and to embed intelligence in many of these appliances. Smart homes will have higher energy efficiencies, better safety, more convenience, and better security than existing homes as the improvements in various technologies make them economically feasible.

Smart Home Security and Intrusion Detection Systemijtsrd
Conventional security systems which are the very common form of protection to lives and properties, have certain limitations such as real time monitoring and control of activities such as intruders in the form of human beings, fire, smoke, et cetera. These limitations in most cases result in high financial loss to properties and lives. This work involves the design and construction of GSM intelligent home security system for real time monitoring of different forms of intrusion. It consist of intrusion detection sensors, pressure, Smoke Fire, Gas and PIR motion , wireless sensors, programmable microcontroller in embedded C language, regulated power supply unit, proteus circuit simulator , relays, GSM modem, mobile phone, data acquisition node and an interface program development. The design calculation and analysis was carried out before it was modelled, simulated in proteus electronic simulator environment. When the PIR finds intruders in form of variation in temperature, gas leakage, pressure , the relevant sensing device s respond and the microcontroller sends encoded alarm signal to the wireless sensor network established in home. The moment the alarm signal is received, it will send alarm short message to the users owners of the building through GSM network immediately. The design analysis and calculations were carried out and finally, a positive result was achieved. SECURITY ATTACKS AND COUNTERMEASURES IN SMART HOMESIJCI JOURNAL
The Internet of Things (IoT) application is visible in all aspects of humans’ day-to-day affairs. The demand for IoT is growing at an unprecedented rate, from wearable wristwatches to autopilot cars. The smart home has also seen significant advancements to improve the quality of lifestyle. However, the security and privacy of IoT devices have become primary concerns as data is shared among intelligent devices and over the internet in a smart home network. There are several attacks - node capturing attack, sniffing attack, malware attack, boot phase attack, etc., which are conducted by adversaries to breach the security of smart homes. The security breach has a negative impact on the tenants' privacy and prevents the availability of smart home services. This article presents smart homes' most common security attacks and mitigation techniques.

Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Cosmetic shop management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Buying new cosmetic products is difficult. It can even be scary for those who have sensitive skin and are prone to skin trouble. The information needed to alleviate this problem is on the back of each product, but it's thought to interpret those ingredient lists unless you have a background in chemistry.
Instead of buying and hoping for the best, we can use data science to help us predict which products may be good fits for us. It includes various function programs to do the above mentioned tasks.
Data file handling has been effectively used in the program.
The automated cosmetic shop management system should deal with the automation of general workflow and administration process of the shop. The main processes of the system focus on customer's request where the system is able to search the most appropriate products and deliver it to the customers. It should help the employees to quickly identify the list of cosmetic product that have reached the minimum quantity and also keep a track of expired date for each cosmetic product. It should help the employees to find the rack number in which the product is placed. It is also Faster and more efficient way.

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.
