Anticipation is the ability to act
in preparation of a certain effect
or future state of the world.
Act without User
intervention
Nest Thermostat can grab data from your daily
activities, understand your behaviour and predict
future actions, it learns and fixes temperature inside
the house without programming.
Nest Thermostats and other smart objects have some
common key features like Learning, prediction and
connectivity.

Learning Prediction Connectivity
Smart Objects can learn actions,
habits, behaviours and
preferences.
Algorithms can analyse big
amounts of data, find patterns
and predict future actions.
Smart Objects are always on, they
constantly exchange data
between networks.

IoT UX Design
The anticipatory design is the conjunction of
Machine Learning, IoT, and UX design:
• IoT: objects can understand the world,
connect and share data between a
network;
• Machine Learning: systems can analyse
data and predict future;
• Ux Design: understand needs and goals of
the user during, before and after the
interaction with an object, a service or a
system;

Anticipatory Design is always
one step ahead.
The anticipation is possible because:
• We are the always-on generation;
• Bandwidth increases day by day;
• Machine learning is effective;
• Commoditization of smart
technology.
Feasibility
There are already a lot of applications in
many fields like:
• Entertainment;
• Security;
• Medical;
• Transportations.
Applications
There are several aspects to understand like:
• Less cognitive load;
• Less privacy;
• More reliability on devices;
• Lack of Transparency & Control;
• Alienation.
Implications
Artificial Intelligence will redesign
healthcare. Google Deepmind is able to
process hundreds of thousands medical
information within minutes in order to
provide better and faster health services.

Spotify is a data-driven company.
One example is the Discover Weekly
feature; every user gets a personalized
playlist every week from Spotify of
music. The playlists is composed by songs
the users never heard, but that probably
would enjoy. It is the modern version of
best friend’s personalized mix tapes.
