How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
- 1. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Evaluation – (Alex Townsley)
- 2. The products In the project we had to create a digipak and a poster(s) as well as the music video. We did this to create a full and clear profile for the band chosen. In this representation I am going to display to you the three products and how they combine together to create a good image for the band/artist.
- 3. What do they look like? Below are the posters and digipak. The music video can be seen below this presentation box. Digipak poster Digipak cover Tour poster As you can see there is a certain degree of continuity running throughout the digipak and posters. You can see that the same artwork has been used throughout the pieces of work. Even if it is text or another picture the colours and themes tend to stick the same throughout. I think you will agree there is a theme of uncertainty which is definitely something I aimed to achieve when planning this project; my reasoning for wanting to use this theme of uncertainty was the real band ‘Alt-J’ do have a very mysterious and unique approach to music and I think the continuous artwork reflects that.
- 4. We can see many examples of bands/artists or even standard companies using the continuity approach. I’ve managed to list the reasoning for doing this down to two. Firstly, the connotations which people draw from any form of media is key to attracting the correct target audience – that’s why toy adverts, for example, stick to the primary colours as it is what attracts their audience as it is simple. In this case however, the mysterious artwork on the front cover, which we see complimented on the digipak poster and on the tour poster, gives a very engaging feel to it, people want to know more. My second reason for the point I previously made (why companies/bands use continuity) is so audiences can recognise the product and match the two together; for example – if someone saw the advertisement for the digipak, they would immediately be able to tell and recognise the digipak if they saw it. This can be seen on all media texts. Please look at the example I have found below. As you can see, the TV advert (left) can easily be drawn together with the magazine advert. This is because of the reds used and also the fact they have used a very well known celebrity. This technique is very clear in my work, as I stated previously the same colours and themes run throughout. I think you will agree that this combination has a very positive effect on the audience as it makes the product seem a lot more appealing.
- 5. What about the music video? Although it could be said the digipak doesn’t combine with the music video whatsoever I could argue very much against that. You may have noticed that on the front cover of the digipak there is a face in the top left corner. Admittedly at first this wasn’t purposely done but during the digipak selection stage I thought I could somehow incorporate the face into the music video. I did this by taking the singer of the band and giving him a very superstitious look so the artwork and character could reference one another. Although they aren’t exactly the same you can definitely see some similarities. I chose to put the character in a stripy red top with white stripes. This was not just a coincidence as I thought it would match the pink/red on the white background on the digipak.
- 6. Music video continued Throughout the music video you will notice that there are many shots of the woods. Due to continuity factors I thought it would be a good idea to take on of the key motifs in the music video and incorporate it into the digipak. As you can see, I have taken an image from the music video and heavily edited it so it could fit the colours and themes of the digipak and posters.
- 7. Conclusion In conclusion, we can see a great example of synergy and cross-media convergence. The three media products all compliment each other in some way or another so the audience can clearly see and recognise them when they see them separately. If I was to do the project again I would probably think about redoing the CD design. Not because I think it is bad at the moment, just because I think it could be better if I were to tweak it slightly. I might also think about the singer’s costume more in the video as it isn’t that easy at the moment to put together the idea – face on artwork and singer in the music video. However I do feel that if I was to put the singer in a pink/red top then the connotations I hoped to achieve wouldn’t be successful as pink is not something anyone would commonly associate with superstition.
