This document discusses how hormones act as mediators in development. It describes how hormones secreted by glands like the pituitary, thyroid, and sex organs play an important role in growth. The pituitary gland secretes growth hormone and controls other glands. Thyroid hormone is necessary for normal growth and brain development. Sex hormones like testosterone and estrogens influence sexual development and characteristics during puberty. The brain controls the pituitary and the timing of sexual maturity.

Vitellogenesis (also known as yolk deposition) is the process of yolk formation via nutrients being deposited in the oocyte, or female germ cell involved in reproduction of lecithotrophic organisms. In insects, it starts when the fat body stimulates the release of juvenile hormones and produces vitellogenin protein.
Yolks is the most usual form of food storage in the egg.
Yolks appear in the oocyte in the secondary period of their growth called vittelogenesis.
Thus,the formation and deposition of yolks is known as vittelogenesis

Depending upon these component yolks is distinguished into protein yolks and fatty acid

It is done because the correct interpretation of gastrulation is impossible without the knowledge of the position which are the presumptive germinal layers (Ectoderm, Mesoderm and Endoderm) occupy in blastula.
Fate mapping is a method used in developmental biology to study the embryonic origin of various adult tissues and structures. The "fate" of each cell or group of cells is mapped onto the embryo, showing which parts of the embryo will develop into which tissue. When carried out at single-cell resolution, this process is called cell lineage tracing. It is also used to trace the development of tumors.

The first issue that an egg and a sperm of any organism type face in successfully producing an embryo is the possibility of polyspermy. Polyspermy is the fertilization of an egg by multiple sperm, and the results of such unions are lethal.
If multiple sperm fertilize an egg, the embryo inherits multiple paternal centrioles. This causes competition for extra chromosomes and results in the disruption of the creation of the cleavage furrow, thus causing the zygote to die. As an important model organism in the study of fertilization and embryonic development, polyspermy in sea urchins has been studied in detail. The sea urchin’s methods of polyspermy prevention have been broken down into two main pathways. These two primary pathways are known as the fast block and the slow block to polyspermy
After the sperm’s receptors come into contact with the egg’s jelly layer and the acrosomal enzymes are released and break down the jelly layer, the sperm head comes into contact with the vitelline and plasma membranes of the egg. When the two plasma membranes contact one another, signals in the egg are initiated.
First, Na+ channels in the egg open, allowing Na+ to flood into the egg. This causes a depolarization of the egg from it’s normal resting potential of -70 mV.
While depolarization is occurring, the remainder of the jelly layer is dissolving. With the dissolution of the jelly layer and the depolarization of the plasma membrane, the first block to preventing fertilization by multiple sperm is put into place.

5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

A hormone is a chemical released by a cell or a
gland in one part of the body that sends out
messages that affect cells in other parts of the
organism.
Like messenger molecules in the body.

4. Pituitary gland Hormones
The pituitary gland is a controlling gland, and the
hormones that it secretes into the blood stream will
control the actions of many other glands within the
body. For this reason the pituitary is also known as
the “master gland”
Adult function is not clear.
But in the child it is necessary for growth; without it
dwarfism results.
Secretion by the Pituitary is controlled by a
substance sent to it from an adjacent part of the
brain.
Children who lack it are fat as well as small
5. Growth Hormone
Human growth hormone (somatotropin) is the
pituitary released hormone that is essential for
the normal growth and development of a child to
an adult.
Without sufficient levels of the hormone, a child
will never reach their full growth potential.
Adults also produce GH, and the hormone
continues to play an important regulatory role
throughout our lives.
GH is produced from the pituitary, which is found
within the hypothalamus in the brain.
With insufficient levels of GH, the crucial
metabolic processes within the body will not work
well.
6. Thyroid hormones
Thyroid hormone from the thyroid gland in the
neck is necessary for normal growth.
Without thyroid hormone, however, cells do not
develop and function properly, especially in
the brain.
Babies who lack thyroid hormone at birth are
small and have insufficiently developed brains.
they are known as cretins.
if the condition is diagnosed and they are treated
with thyroid hormone at once, they recover
completely.
7. Thyroid hormones cntd….
Thyroid lack may also develop later in childhood,
when it causes a slowing of growth rate.
If longer they go without treatment, the more
likely it is that the brain damage will be
permanent.
8. Testosterone
Testosterone, secreted by the interstitial cells of
the testis, is important not only at puberty but
before.
Its secretion by the fetal testis cells is responsible
for the development of certain parts of the male
genital apparatus.
If testosterone is not secreted at a particular and
circumscribed time, the genitalia develop into the
female form.
9. Estrogens
The female sex hormones, collectively
called estrogens are first secreted in quantity at
puberty by cells in the ovary.
They cause growth of the uterus, vagina,
and breast.
They act also on the bones of the hip, causing the
specifically female widening.
10. Sex Hormones
The pituitary secretes two other hormones
concerned in development of Sex Hormones.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), causes
growth of the main portions of the ovary in the
female and the sperm-producing cells in the testis
of the male.
Luteinizing hormone (LH), causes growth and
secretion of the testosterone-secreting cells of the
male and has an action in controlling the
menstrual cycle in the female.
11. Brain in Sex Hormone
The signal to start the sequence of events is
given by the brain, not the pituitary.
Just as the brain holds the information on sex, so
it holds information on maturity.
