Scarface The Movie Psychology
In this essay I decided to watch the movie Scarface (1932). This movie is directed by Howard Hawks
and Richard Rosson. Its lead actors are Osgood Perkins, Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, and Karen Morley.
Scarface is a film about guns, gangsters, and pretty woman, it follows a story of a fast rising gangster
who lives by the moto the world is yours, but once he finds himself at the top he is quick to find his
world is tumbling down around him.
Looking at scenes of sexual innuendo the film handled it with showing minor skin or even kissing.
One scene of a sexual innuendo is the dialogue with Tony (Paul Muni) and Poppy (Karen Morley). In
this scene you hear Tony say I m not hungry. Except for you. You got something I like hinting to
Poppy that he is interested in her more than he is food. Even with the films restrictions on not showing
a lot of skin or even a sex scene the directors were able to still put their points across to what the
characters implied, and that there was a sense of romance between the two without having to show
any explicated scenes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You have an anonymous shadow who is Antonio Tony Camonte walking across the wall, then shots
are fired and it pans back to the body of Big Louis Costillo (Harry J. Vejar) not showing the actual
death or blood. This would be an ongoing theme because in the entire film the only blood you really
ever see is on the sleeve of Johnny Lovo (Osgood Perkins) when he is clipped by a bullet. Even with
the restrictions the directors had for the time I found it refreshing to see that I was able to understand
the crisis that was happing but not have it required by the director to have a shock factor of blood and

The Importance of a Kindergarten Teacher
Kindergarten children thrive when they can work independently and cooperatively with a small group
of peers (Gullo, D. F., 2006). A kindergarten teacher who is teaching students to work independently
and in small groups while learning about numbers must understand that the students are very diverse
and have been taught in many different ways. A kindergarten teacher is a very important person in the
life of the children entering elementary school. Teachers at the kindergarten level must keep in mind

using songs, chants, and stories that emphasize the counting sequence, both forward and backwards
and from different points within the sequence, and that focus on the tricky teens when the students are
ready;
providing opportunities to participate in games that emphasize strategies such as one to one
correspondence;
providing support to help them recognize the various counting strategies (e.g., tagging each object as
it is counted); providing opportunities to develop facility with finger pattern counting, so that 5 fingers
and 10 fingers become anchors for the other numbers. Thus, students will recognize that they do not
have to recount the 5 fingers on one hand in order to show 6 fingers; instead, they can automatically
show the 5 fingers, say five , and then count on an additional finger from the other hand to make 6 (A
Guide to effective instruction in mathematics, kindergarten to grade 3 : number sense and numeration,
2003).

Narcissism And The Recent Advent Of A 1 Question Scale
For my discussion paper this week I chose to look at narcissism and the recent advent of a 1 question
scale to determine narcissism. In particular I will look at how this study relates to concepts discussed
in Chapter 2 of our readings. The scale and its development is outlined in Development and Validation
of the Single Item Narcissism Scale. My interest in this subject is sparked by interactions with a
family member growing up, who among other things, could be construed as highly narcissistic. From
Wikipedia: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is
excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see
the destructive damage they are causing to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Reliability and validity seemed to be important concerns for the authors of this paper. They ran 11
different trials in order to rule out confounding variables and ensure that their one item scale was
indeed positively correlated with actual narcissism. In total 2,250 participants were surveyed across a
wide range of scenarios. In study number one participants were also asked to complete scales which
are already known to measure narcissism such as the 40 item narcissistic personality inventory (NPI).
This provides a way to cross check the results of their own SINS scale to make sure that it is valid.
They found that SINS was positively correlated to the NPI with an R value of .40 and a p value of
.001
Study 3 of this paper was used to access the reliability of the scale, that is to say, are the results of the
SINS scale replicable? To accomplish this task 141 undergraduates from the University of Michigan
took the SINS test online and then completed it again 10.9 days later in the presence of the authors of
the study. The test retest correlation the authors found was r=.79. This is a fairly strong correlation,
indicating that their scale is indeed reliable.
In study 7 the authors were afraid that using an 11 point scale had caused some participants to
undervalue their own narcissism because participants were unwilling to rate themselves so high. To
remedy this situation the authors reduced the SINS scale to a 7 point scale and

Reoccurring Themes Of Evil In The Fellowship Of The Ring
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines evil as morally reprehensible and causes harm . Some will
debate that evil is an inherited trait, while others will argue that evil is acquired over time. Throughout
J.R.R. Tolkien s first part of The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring , there are reoccurring
themes of evil and corruption, most of which surround the One Ring, and can vary depending on who
possesses the Ring. While both natural evilness and developed evilness are demonstrated, The
Fellowship of the Ring suggests that evil is not inherited, but acquired over time. Evil is prominent
throughout The Fellowship of the Ring . Shortly after Boromir suggests that they use the Ring against
Sauron, Elrond responds saying that the Ring, is altogether evil (267). The Ring was crafted with the
sole purpose of evil. This is seen in the inscription on the Ring which says, One ring to bring them all
and in the darkness to bind them (50). This script shows that the ring was created to draw other to
darkness , which is often used to symbolize evil. While the Ring itself is evil, it is the only truly evil
thing in Middle Earth: For noting was evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so. (267).
Throughout The Fellowship of the Ring , there is a close correlation between the one ring and evil, as
Elrond says, The very desire of it corrupts the heart (267). When Gandalf the Grey suggests that Bilbo
leaves the ring behind before he goes on his journey, Bilbo

Abortion Executive Branch
The purpose of this American government research paper is to discuss the topic of abortion and how it
relates to the three branches of the American government. This essay will research the Executive,
Judicial and Legislative branches. I will use research from sources to cover how this topic plays out in
the government along with its effects on the American people. The US Federal Government has dealt
with abortion by different facts between the Executive Branch, the Judicial Branch, and the
Legislative Branch. Abortion is a process that terminates pregnancy. The decisions that the
government are trying to put in play are hard because everyone has different views on abortions.
While, the Supreme Court s, the laws, and the president all are trying to reduce abortion, it is like
taking away from another life that is being created. Still, until this day they are still trying to have
decisions on abortions. It remains a relevant topic on major news stations and as recently with attacks
at a Planned Parenthood.

Grambling State answered with three runs of its own to tie the game. With one out, McKenzie Johnson
homered and Kenyshae Beasley singled. She stole second and scored on Mercedes Williams double.
Tia Coleman followed with the game tying single, but did not advance past first after sophomore
Mackenzie Stewart struck out the final two hitters. With the international tie breaking rule in effect in
the eighth and a runner placed on second, freshman Haley Campbell hit a sacrifice bunt to advance
sophomore Payton LeBlanc to third. Junior Anna Dunn singled home the run and was replaced by
junior pinch runner Kelsey Ancelot. She stole second, and looked to score when senior Mallory Ford
singled. However, Ancelot was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. ... Show more content on

Pressure Mapping
In Behrendt et al (2014) in summary of the article reviewing continuous bedside pressure mapping
(CBPM) devices were studied on the effects of pressure ulcer prevention. It focused on reducing the
number of hospital associated pressure ulcers. Prevention of pressure ulcer is a very important in
nursing, we can provide a better quality life for patients in the hospital. Patient with the CBPM
devices had an occurrence of developing a pressure ulcer in 2 of 213 patients and in patients with no
CBPM the occurrence of developing a pressure ulcer were 10 of 209 patient (Behrendt et al., 2014).

They evaluate if the skin was at risk for developing pressure ulcers after the patient was repositioned
routinely every 2 hours. Measurement of the pressure points were taken every 30 seconds
continuously (Peterson et al., 2013). The study is relevant to my study as well because they use the
same method as far as pressure mapping as Behrendt et al (2014) but they measured pressure points.
Their study showed that patients are still at risk to develop pressure ulcers when repositioned every 2
hours, some area of the body did not relieve from pressure after repositioning. This means that even
after the patient was repositioned to prevent or reduce the risk of pressure ulcer formation, there are
substantial areas of skin that do not get relieved and remain at risk for pressure ulcers regardless of
routine repositioning by experienced nurses (Peterson et al., 2013). The study was done to reduce
pressure ulcers prevention by revealing that other areas of the skin were still at risk after repositioning
the patient. Further studies would reveal inconsistencies in this study whether or not these triple
jeopardy areas will into pressure ulcers, progress a pressure ulcer or occur at specific tissue location
only, these can be tested by expending the testing time to 24 hours rather than 4 to 6 hours. Expansion

Understanding The Modern World
ICC UNDERGRADUATE FOUNDATION PROGRAMME
________________________________________ ICC 2014 15 ASSIGNMENT COVER SHEET
Student name: Anne Tan Shi Yu ICC No: 614346 Term (1,2 or 3): Term 2 Course Title: Understanding
the Modern World (UMW) Title of assignment: What is nationalism, and can it survive in a
globalizing world? Lecturer s name: Kevin Manton Word Count: 1502 words Nationalism is a very
broad concept that only emerged in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before the idea of
nationalism, people were loyal to their own religious spheres. There is therefore a general consensus
that nationalism is a modern invention. (Kidd 1999) In Europe, people were attached to their religion,
mainly Christianity. The concept of a national identity was inexistent. However, ever since the
nineteenth century, people have started to see themselves as nationals of a particular nation. (Kedourie
1960) The shared characteristics of people within countries have created the concept of nationalism,
where people feel bonded within their own nation. The main notion of nationalism stems from the fact
that people share something in common and thus they have a national identity. (Spencer, Wollman
2002) This common bond can come in many forms political, cultural and territorial. Given the ever
changing nature of social relations, powers and political systems around the world due to
globalization, the idea of a nation and people s national identity may be threatened. It can be

Essay On Risk-Dependent Lncrnas
3) Risk dependent lncRNAs transcripts significantly recaptured both neural tube specific enhancers
that were validated in vivo and the neuroblastoma susceptibility variations that were found by
GWASs.
In order to discover oncogenic noncoding loci, we first asked whether deregulated noncoding
transcripts between two distinct risk groups over represent functional enhancers that have been evident
by tissue specific enhancer activities and disease susceptibility alleles in neuroblastoma.
To identify functional enhancers from transcriptome profiling, we have reanalyzed dysregulated
transcripts derived from total RNA seq data (GSE49711, n=498, tumor cell content 60%) pertaining to
neuroblastoma patients with risk stratifications (28). To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Specifically, over 1400 positively validated tissue specific enhancers were downloaded from the
VISTA Enhancer Browser (31). These in vivo validation was tissue specific, thus an empirical p value
was also calculated per type of tissue and enriched for neural tube (empirical P 0.005, Fig 3D). We
conclude that risk group dependent lncRNAs are a powerful metric to indicate tissue specific
functional enhancers. A risk dependent enhancer was hereafter defined from the neuro tube specific
enhancers if its locus overlaps with any risk dependent lncRNAs.
Oncogenic signaling underlying these tissue specific and risk dependent enhancers is ready for
interpretation. We identified 37 neural tube specific risk dependent enhancers, of which we observed
three strong associations to oncogenesis below:
We first inquired the TF binding potency, as the binding of sequence specific TFs to cognate motifs is
typically required by enhancers to regulate gene expression (32). 70 human TFs showed significant
binding potency (odds 1.5, FDR 0.001, with more than 10% instance proportion), with tumorigenic
regulator FoxM1 among the top 5 (Fig 3E).
None housekeeping genes were captured, agreeing with the idea that housekeeping genes are in
general regulated by simple promoters (1). In contrast, these TFs significantly over represent known
oncogenes (P=0.01, odds=5) and tumor suppressor genes (P=0.0003, odds=7.5, Fig

Night s Senior Awards Ceremony
This may not be the most fascinating story, but it s a story that I believe many students can relate to.
When it comes to school, we are always exposed to feelings of jealousy and envy towards students
who are smarter and have better grades than us. However, not because someone has more of
something, makes what you have any less significant and special.
On May 28th in my AP Literature class, my teacher handed out note cards for that night s Senior
$#$#1$#$# ceremony. My card had three numbers on it 7,9 and 21. Each number represents the order
in which a group of awards would be given out. For instance, since I had number 7 first, I was part of
the seventh group to go up on stage and receive an award. I was ecstatic to see which awards I would

the ceremony more. I observed as the number ten group received their award for having over 1,000
hours of community service, the group eleven, then group twelve and so on. Patiently, I awaited for
Mr. Bravo to hold up the twenty one in order to receive my last award. When he finally did, I stood up
and began to walk toward the stage s stairs, but I noticed that I was the only one there. The times I
went up before, I could hear the sound of chairs folding up and students chattering as they walk to get
in line. But not this time. All you could here were the clicks of my heels. I began to feel even more
nervous now. I had absolutely no clue what the award was for. Why was I the only one here. Is it a
special award? Did I read the number wrong? Was I in line for the wrong number? My mind began to
overflow with these questions. This time my principle began with Our next award is being presented
to a special student whom the counseling staff has chosen as this years Champion of Character for her
extraordinary high school growth. She then continued with Congratulations to Ms. Leslie Ruiz. I
proceeded to walk on stage and receive my award. I was very nervous as I stood on stage alone, but I
also felt very honored and ecstatic to receive such a special award. From a distance I could see my

Abstract In this paper two set of edge texture features is proposed such as Discriminative Robust
Local Binary Pattern (DRLBP) and Discriminative Robust Local Ternary Pattern (DRLTP) for object
recognition. The proposed DLBP and DRLTP are derived from the drawback of the Local Binary
Pattern (LBP), Local Ternary Pattern (LTP) and Robust LBP (RLBP).The LBP code and the RLBP
code are mapped in the same block .The proposed feature solves the problem of discrimination
between a bright object against dark background and vice versa. The proposed feature retains contrast
information for representation of object contours the LBP, LTP and RLBP discards. By this proposed
features the objects in the image can be further analyzed for the exact location of the object in the

Treasure Coast Food Bank Case Study
The Salvation Army in Red Bank New Jersey is just one of many locations for the organization. Since
the Salvation Army is an international charity that helps people, not only across the United States but
in many countries as well, it was hard to find an organization that was only in one other state that
someone could compare it to because of its magnitude. Instead, this paper will focus on an
organization that was on the same level as the Salvation Army s as well as similar to its cause. Feeding
America is a national charity that helps to feed the hungry across the nation. However, this paper will
focus on one of its locations in Fort Pierce, Florida, called Treasure Coast Food Bank. Both of these
organizations offer similar aide to those in need and have the same goals of feeding America s hungry.
This article will compare and contrast the entirety of the organizations, as well as the amount of
people in need in the chosen areas of focus, their financial records, and their advertising strategies.

Financial statistics of the overall organizations will help to compare the statistics of the two specific

fundraising is reported to be 99% effective. ( The 50 Largest U.S. Charities , n.d.) A lot of these
statistics show that Feeding America has higher percentages in most areas compared to the Salvation
Army. This is because, again looking at 2014, The Salvation Army received $344 million from the
government because they are a religious organization. ( The 50 Largest U.S. Charities: Salvation

Salvation Army only has a 70% rate. ( The 50 Largest U.S. Charities ,

Epistemological Assumptions Focus On What Can Be Acquired...
Epistemological assumptions focus on what can be known and how knowledge can be acquired (Bell,
8). I am a positivist; we believe that knowledge is found via empirical observations (obtained through
the senses). Positivism follows an identical approach as the study of natural sciences in the testing of a
theory. Though their is a difference between the two fields the deductive approach works just as well
in both. You create a theory, generate a hypothesis, test with empirical data, and see whether or not it
confirms or rejects it (6). If it is confirmed by empirical means, then it is knowledge (9). I believe that
the world can be objectively experienced and described, via quantitative research: collecting data,
transforming it into statistics which then formulate into facts and uncover patterns (14). Ontology as
Bell states is split up into two camps, by two questions, firstly: is social reality real, or is it a set of
mental constructions? (12) Secondly, is social reality pre existing or is it created through our actions?
(12) I am an objectivist; I believe there is a pre existing social reality, were social phenomena exist
outside the influence of social actors. My assumptions, would impact my choice of research design by
limiting my selection. For me to research a social phenomenon, I would need a research design that
would allow me to study it as a physical object. Something that provides a lot of quantitative data, and
that if given to other researchers would reveal the

High School Athletes Should Be Required
The NCAA states, Nearly eight million students currently participate in high school athletics in the
United States. More than 460,000 compete as NCAA athletes, and just a select few within each sport
move on to compete at the professional or Olympic level ( Estimated Probability ). Everyone agrees
that Americans have to improve academic achievement in schools today; however, it is hard to do so
with a barrage of athletic activities. Students are focusing more on sports then academics, and this
diversion seems to be costly. In order to fix this, high school athletes should be required to maintain a
2.3 grade point average in order to participate in sports because the primary mission of any serious
academic institution must be to develop the young person s intellectual and cognitive skills and help
one get recruited; also, there is a very low chance of athletes continuing their careers at the college or
professional level.
The primary purpose of any academic institution is to develop and prepare a young person for after his
schooling years. In, The Purpose of Schools, Michael Peterson states the two goals of any school: to
teach students who have specific skills to perform jobs, and introduce students to active citizenry
(Peterson). In other words, Peterson argues how a school must prepare one for his or her future instead
of preparing them for a career in sports. John Dewey writes, Education should create an interest in all
persons in furthering the general good, so

Summary Of The Book The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton

Most people would have just let him get attacked, and try not to get involved, but his gang members

ll be okay, I pleaded. I ll get hold of a little one, okay? (131).This shows that Ponyboy is pleading with
Darry to let him go to the rumble, and be by their side even when he is sick. He could have stayed
home, and be safe, but instead he is loyal to his gang members and goes to the rumble.Their he got hit
in the head, and was bleeding, but still went with Dally to go see Johnny. Ponyboy said, I reached up
to scratch the side of my head where it d been itching for a while, and when I looked at my hand it
was smeared with blood. (151). Ponyboy is bleeding, and he still goes with Dally to go, and try to help
Johnny stay awake at the hospital. This shows Ponyboy is always at his friend s side and would never

Alan Turing s Impact On Modern Day World
Life of Imitation Father of Artificial Intelligence, inventor, Enigma breaker, war hero. The life of
mathematician Alan Turing is one of extreme feats and tragedy. Even from a young age, Turing was
misunderstood and unappreciated, and this became a common theme all the way to his death at the
young age of 41. Alan Turing envisions a digital world centuries ahead of his time. Everything he did
still has a major impact on our modern day world. Yet his impact is still unrecognized. Alan Mathison
Turing was born on June 23, 1912 in Maida Vale, London. Even from a young age Turing showed
signs of a genius, so his parents father Julius Mathison Turing (1873 1947) and mother Ethel Sara
Stoney (1881 1976) enrolled him to St. Michael s Starting School at the age of six. His teachers
noticed his intellect early on, but didn t necessarily appreciate it. At the age of 13 he attended an

to be as Turing Machines. This was all published in his paper called: On Computable Numbers, with
an Application to the Entscheidungsproblem (1936). Turing proved that a theoretical universal

The Nacirema Analysis
While reading the Nacirema I could not help to think how different they were and question the
different rituals and customs they practiced. After finding out the meaning behind the allegory I was
shocked and surprised. I was surprised int the similarities that are visible after knowing that the
parable of the Nacirema was actually about America. My brain started making connections to the
American culture. One of the first connections that immediately made to the reading was the part
where Miner talked about how the human body was viewed as disease and an ugly thing. How could
someone view this of their own body? But that is exactly the way Americans consciously or not view
our bodys. The way that we go to the doctor often and take vitamins or shots against viruses and
disease. Often we are even required by schools that we have certain vaccinations. This could appear
different to people who do not get vaccinated as often as Americans do. People grow up viewing
everything they do on a daily basis as normal and what s correct. That when we see different from one

Southeast Asi Disaster Response Paper
Southeast Asia includes the countries of Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar,
Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and East Timor. These countries are comprised of both developed
and developing countries and are among the most densely populated countries in the world with a total
population exceeding 620 million people. United States foreign policy as well as significant global
attention can attest to the strategic, economic, and political importance of this region (Gursky, Burkle,
Hamon, Walker, Benjamin, 2014). Arguably, the critical link connecting the two major oceans of the
region and some of the most important waterway transits in the world, it is not difficult to understand
why the United States and its military organizations have long been a part of Humanitarian Assistance
and Disaster Relief (HADR) efforts in this region. This paper will examine the disaster preparedness

Europe (ESCAP: 2013). If history is any indicator of what the future has in store, the area will
continue to suffer natural disasters at a pace that far surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. The
strategic, economic and humanitarian impact of such disasters are devastating and improving our

The Simpsons Reflection
Whether you love them, or hate them, The Simpsons a key piece to young adulthood in many homes
around the world. From depicting things such as struggling with disorders, problems with the boss, or
average family life, most North American families are able to relate to the The Simpsons and that is
why we keep crawling back each Sunday night. In the episode Mypods and Boomsticks, Bart Simpson
meets a new friend from Jordan named Bashir. After learning they share many common interest,
especially coming to food, Bart and Bashir become such good friends, Bart learns that Bashir is a
muslim. After learning this, Marge is proud of Bart for meeting new people and stepping outside a
comfort zone to meet and share new experiences. Homer s reaction is quite the opposite. Once word
gets out that Homer s son has befriended a muslim, Homer s friends begin to spit stereotypes in
Homer s face about muslims and the culture behind Islam. After long, persuasive conversations, half
witted Homer decides to invite Bashir and his family to a dinner in an attempt to Assimilate them to
American culture, this includes offering them Pork Back Ribs and a large american flag cake that
Homer later states is Poisonous. This shows Homer s apparent inability to make decisions for himself
and for the sake of his family. After this assimilation attempt, Bashir s family realizes it is best if they
leave. Upon leaving, Homer recognizes the mistakes and decides to go to Bashir s home to apologize

Analyze the security mechanisms needed to protect the DMS systems from both state employees and
users accessing over the internet:
Department of Management Services (DMS) has chosen to expand their applications and services via
TCP/IP and Internet access. DMS uses a widely used proprietary scheme: IBM s Systems Network
Architecture (SNA) which provides support for TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet

Thus, all distributed applications, including remote logon, client/server, email, file transfer, Web
access, and so on, can be secured (Stallings, 2009). Finally, Stallings (2009) has noted, another
relatively general purpose solution is to implement security just above TCP by using Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL) and the follow on Internet standard Transport Layer Security (TLS). For full generality,
SSL, (TLS) could be provided as part of the underlying protocol suite and therefore be transparent to
applications. Alternatively, SSL can be embedded in specific packages.
Critique the transition process performed by the DMS in the case study. Then, recommend two (2)
alternatives to the IP Infrastructure or applications not already mentioned in the case study: By the
early 1990s, the Florida department of management services (DMS) had built up a large information
systems network that serve state government agencies in 10 regional sites and connected these to the
data center in Tallahassee. The network was based on the use of the proprietary systems network
architecture (SNA) from IBM and mainframe at the data center that housed most of the applications.
Although relatively happy with the SNA application and services by providing TCP/IP capability and
internet access. The goal was met in a remarkably short time. Over the course of 30 months, DMS

Ernest Hemingway s Experiences
Hemingway used his written work as a depiction of his own life experiences in a number of ways.
Like many other author s he uses his stories and his poems to show his life. In stories such as Soldier s
Home , A Farewell to Arms, and In Another Country he portrays the characters as a reflection of
himself. In each of these examples Hemingway explains multiple different aspects of his own life
including, his life prior, during, after the war, and his love of a woman named Agnes. Although these
stories aren t exact descriptions of his life, they can be interpreted as depictions of his experiences. In
the story titled, In Another Country , Hemingway speaks with an Italian major at a hospital. He uses
the character named Nick to portray his own self. One example of this is My knee did not bend and
the leg dropped straight from the knee to the ankle without a calf, and the machine was to bend the
knee and make it move as riding a tricycle. But it did not bend yet, and instead the machine lurched
when it came to the bending part. (Hemingway, Ernest. In Another Country. ) Hemingway uses this to
depict his own real life leg injury that he went through when fighting in war. Another example in this
story is when Hemingway has his character talk to the Italian Major. He conveys his own message
through him speaking with the man. Why must not a man marry? He cannot marry. He cannot marry,
he said angrily. If he is to lose everything, he should not place himself in a

Essay about apeuro dbq on the poor
The Europeans between the 1450 s and 1700 s held many negative attitudes towards the poor
themselves and the idlers who they believed were a menace to society. Also during this time period the
Europeans had many responses like in England where they put them in poorhouses or tried to heal
them or in others places where they tried to give them alms.
During this time period many Europeans held negative attitudes toward helping the poor due to the
idle and lazy who go around begging as if they are poor. Emperor Charles V in a royal decree wrote
how indiscriminately giving alms will result in idleness which is the root of all evils (Document 4).

actually couldn t get jobs due to illness causing a distaste of them by the Europeans.
Even though many Europeans saw only the idlers as the problems, many others had negative attitudes
to all poor people. Juan Luis Vives who was a Spanish humanist wrote in, On Assistance to the Poor,
that when a family becomes poor that the men begin to steal, the women become prostitutes, and their
children grow up and become accustomed to this lifestyle while those with money believe the poor to
not deserve their alms (Document 3). The POV of Vives is that of a humanist who feels they know the
deeper meaning of all human, and he sees them as deplorable creatures who when pushed against a
wall become thieving animals while those with money don t even try to better these poor peoples lives
by thinking that the poor don t deserve their charity. Jean Maillefer, a wealthy French merchant, wrote
to his children that the poor have grown accustom to being poor and they cannot leave due to them
having no cares, bills, and fears while they feel great independence (Document 11). Maillefer s POV is
that the poor have no worries and are independent because they have no job which comes from him

The Role Of Women In Female Fences, By August Wilson
Female Fences Fences took place in the 1950 s, during that time the role of women in the 1950 was
repressive and constrictive in a lot of ways. The 1950s is often viewed as a period of conformity, when
both men and women observed strict gender roles and complied with society s expectations (Women
in 1950 s). Society placed a very high significance on different expectations on behavior in public as
well as at home. Women were to be homemakers, caring mothers, and to be an obedient wife to their
husbands. A wife was only considered a good wife if she did anything and everything her husband
asked for and agreed with everything the man would say. This was the type of way Troy treated Rose

Wilson shows his audience two ways he portrays women throughout the play and he stressed the
significance of their roles in that time period.
August Wilson made his audience aware of the issues blacks were going through during that time
period. For instance, Wilson shows the struggle Troy has with allowing his son Corey to play sports
and get recruited. Troy goes on to say I decided seventeen years ago that boy wasn t getting involved
in no sports. Not after what they did to me in the sports (Wilson 1.3.111). Troy is referring to how the
whites would not let him play in the major league because of his skin color and he believes they will
do the same to Corey. Wilson expresses another theme of color discrimination when Troy talks to
Bono about how only whites drive the garbage trucks while the coloreds do the picking. Troy states,
...Why? Why you got the white men driving and the colored lifting? ... What s the matter, don t I
count? You think only white fellows got sense enough to drive a truck... (Wilson 1.1.10). This was a
big problem for many companies in the 1950 s the African Americans played minor roles at the time
only whites held the special privilege jobs. Many black men like Troy just wanted a change they
wanted equal job opportunities like the white men were getting.

Analysis Of Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree Essay
Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree explores the opinions of average and lower class citizens on public
hangings on England from 1770 until 1868 rather than the opinions of bureaucrats, royalty, and other
elites as many similar histories do. He argues that the opinions of lower class citizens grew more and
more unfavorable during this time, and the movement of executions to a private setting in the 1860s
was a direct result of the diminishing support for public executions. At the same time, the gradual shift
among elites and other government officials toward the abolishment of public executions was a
reaction against increasingly unruly crowds and the squeamishness toward the spectacle of the
execution (67). This book is organized into six sections with a total of 21 chapters. The first section
describes the mentality of the audience present at public executions, and the second section covers the
private opinions of plebian, or lower class citizens on execution. The third section defends Gatrell s
argument that the outlawing of public executions was more of a solution to large rioting crowds than it
was for humanitarian purposes. The fourth and fifth sections offer detailed accounts of specific court
cases that demonstrate the unfairness and ineffectiveness of the Blood Code and public execution in
England. Finally, the sixth section contains Gatrell s argument against those who deem themselves
reformers who, in Gatrell s opinion, only reformed out of self interest to dispel

Essay On Lower House Of Government
The United States and France are two countries with similar ways of electing the lower house of
government. Both countries are divided into districts with single member representation. However, the
United States uses a majority system, first past the post, while France uses a majority plurality, two
round system. With each system there are separate advantages and disadvantages. Nonetheless, the
first past the post system used in the United States is more efficient, cost effective, and
comprehendible to the average person. The United States of America elects the lower house of
government using simple majority. This system can also be described as a plurality, or first past the
post. The United States is divided into 435 different districts by population, with one individual
representing each constituency. Members of the House of Representatives, the lower house of
government in the United States, are elected every two years. (Parline Database, 2016) The methods
by which candidates are brought to the ballot vary by state. However, most states use a partisan
primary to bring candidates to the final ballot. For example, Washington State uses the top two method
to bring candidates to the ballot. Under this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Under plurality, the individual who receives the most votes receives the seat in the House of
Representatives. The individual may not always receive the majority of votes because more than two
individuals may receive votes. This leads to wasted votes in that everyone who voted for the losing
candidate does not have their vote represented. In addition, more seats may be given to a political
party than votes received. If a political party receives a plurality of votes with thirty percent
nationwide, they may be the new majority party but seventy percent of the country still voted for
somebody else. (Hoard,

The Main Types Of Exchange Rate
China s Central Bank had devalued the Yuan by nearly 2% for the second time in August 2015.
Having a currency called the Yuan , China has one of the most successful economies of our time.
Their structural reform in the late 1970 s and their integration with the WTO (World Trade
Organisation) has enabled them to fully integrate with the world market and obtain several advantages
leading to them being an export oriented economy (Yang Yao, 2011). China s devaluation has had
significant effects on its own economy and the rest of the world such as making its exports cheaper
and affecting the aggregated demand of China. The devaluation of the Yuan will also have an effect
upon the imports by making them more expensive. In this essay these effects will be analysed to a
greater extent. Theoretically speaking there are three main types of exchange rates. The first type of
exchange rate is the floating exchange rate. According to Sloman (2015, p. 457) a floating exchange
rate system can be defined as When the government does not intervene in the foreign exchange
markets, but simply allows the exchange rate to be freely determined by demand and supply . The
second type of exchange rate is the fixed exchange rate whereby the government fixes its currency to
that of another currency. Most countries which have a fixed exchange rate system usually fix their
currency to the US dollar. The Chinese currency can be said to be a managed floating exchange rate
regime (Spence.,2015) which

Use Of A Theory And Pagerank Algorithm
Mathematics in Football
The purpose of this report is to research the use of mathematics in football. In particular, we have
researched the use of network theory and PageRank algorithm. The report aims to consider which
strategies are optimal and discuss whether teams ought to adopt a more mathematical approach to on
field play.
Introduction
Network theory is becoming more and more used within football to help teams analyse and change
their style of play. It consists of a collection of nodes, with edges joining them that are weighted
depending on how frequent a path is used. In football, the nodes represent the players of a team, the
edges will be the passes between them and the weight will be the amount of passes between them. We
will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The PageRank algorithm gives more weight to a link if it comes from a high ranking page. In terms of
football this means a pass from a popular player is more valuable than a pass from a player who is
hardly involved in the game. Player s statistics constantly change throughout the game and the
PageRank score of a player depends on the score of his teammates so all scores must be computed at
the same time and the algorithm is only finished once the game has ended. In summary, PageRank
algorithm roughly assigns to each player the probability that he will have the ball after a reasonable
number of passes have been made. [8]
Mathematical Background
One way to analyse players position is closeness centrality, which is defined as the inverse geodesic
distance of a node in the network [1]:
(1)
Where Aij is the total amount of passes from player i to j. This formula uses incoming and outgoing
passes as equal measure. This will show how well connected the players are to each other.
Another way is betweenness centrality, which measures the extent to which a node lies on paths
between other nodes[2]:
(2)
Where is the number of geodesic paths from j to k going through i and is the total number of geodesic
paths.
The PageRank algorithm can be defined by: (3)
Where = is the total number of passes made by player , is a heuristic parameter that represents the
probability of the player keeping the

Stereotypical Roles of Australian Males Essay
Stereotypical Roles of Australian Males
The typical Australian: lazy, beer guzzling, faded blue singlets, thongs, slang words. This is the
dominant reading formed by the media, commonly in advertisements and novels. The image
constructed by such media is one of an unfit couch potato who sits around all day drinking and
watching television. This stereotype is not only downgrading, but constructs Australian males as
underachievers in society. Some Australians may be like this, as for many the pursuit of leisure is a
serious business. Indeed texts such as Chris Franklin s Bloke (2000) and The Wind and the Monkey
(1999) support this theory of the common Australian man. However texts such as Crocodile Dundee

everyone he meets. He tries his best to greet everyone he sees in the street by saying, G day, mate. The

abide by the laws of America, but he acts on what he believes is right. There are many scenes in the

Crocodile Dundee is set in the cultural context of outback Australia and it s Aborigines. Michael

performs many cultural acts that only the Aborigines do. Such as He s gone walkabout. In outback
Australia nothing changes, the towns are small and everybody knows one another. The social context

Film Is Not Yet Rated Essay
This Film Is Not Yet Rated brings up many issues against Motion Pictures Association of America s
rating system. I am in favor of the issues brought up in this film as it seems that some ratings that the
MPAA s rating board give out do not always follow a concrete rule. For example, movies that
contained scenes with homosexuals having sex with each other received an NC 17 rating, compared to
other movies that have similar scenes, but with heterosexuals instead received an R rating. In the end,
it is still two people having sex with each other and should not really be differentiated by their sex or
gender.
The individual rating types are also not a good portrayal of the movie as a whole. Bully was a perfect
example of this. Amanda Kehrberg from the Phoenix New Times says The R rating is based on a
handful of swear words used by students in the film who, by the MPAA s standards, wouldn t be

Connotations In The Road By Cormac Mccarthy
The Road, by Cormac McCarthy revolves around a dystopian world. Throughout the book there is
very little hope but enough for survival. McCarthy focuses the book around a father and son trying to
move west. McCarthy s writing style throughout the first section of the book shows how hopeless the
world is, by extinguishing character names, negative connotations, and almost all of society. In the
beginning the narrator introduces the characters with pronouns only, when he woke in the woods in
the dark and the cold of the night he d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him (McCarthy 3).

The diction that goes along with mostly any word with connotations are positive while in all other
cases the negative phrases do not get connotated. When McCarthy talks about the father in the book
there is the lack of connotations, He hadnt kept a calendar for years . (4) When the man and the child
are speaking to each other in a neutral setting connotations are used, I m right here (5) . When the
father talks to the boy about anything he tries his best to stay positive but when the boy has a dream of
his mother he wants to die more than ever. The father abruptly attempted to stop the boy from talking
that way, Dont say it. It s a bad thing to say (47) The lack of connotations can refer to being very little
hope and the hope that they have should not be exhausted on every word but only on those that are
crucial to say to another person. This goes back to the use of short choppy sentences. Even between
the boy and the man the sentences are kept short but informational for the other. The characters within
the book do not speak much to each other in general either. The talk of death is constantly there
because the son will continue to bring it up and ask, Are we going to die? as often as he can when
something bad happens. The dream with his mother in it, made his want of death increase because he
wanted to see her one more time and to be a whole family again. He will only ask that question or
state that he wants to die. Both of which are short sentences that are constantly used throughout the

Should Federal Agents Be Allowed For Collect Dna From...
Should Federal Agents be allowed to collect DNA from anyone arrested? This is a controversial issue.
In my opinion, DNA is a very powerful and useful tool because many sex crimes go unsolved because
of lack of evidence, but if federal agents can look in a database where DNA samples are stored and
compare it to anyone who was arrested especially those who committed sex crimes more crimes
would be solved. Many say DNA testing violates suspects rights under the Fourth Amendment of the
Constitution of the United States. DNA testing has toppled the way federal agents gather evidence in
various criminal cases, particularly assault and homicide and thus had an expansive effect on a lot of

Not any law enforcement agent can collect DNA samples.
If federal agents detain and arrest an suspect, they have the power to take DNA from you and to
promptly transfer it to CODIS. In certain states an arrestee may be obligated to give a DNA test. The
DNA Fingerprint Act of 2005 permits states to transfer profiles to CODIS. Eleven states (Alaska,
Arizona, California, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Tennessee, Texas,
and Virginia) at present take into consideration automatic DNA collection from people only arrested or
associated with a crime.
Generally the police require a court order to collect DNA unless they have been convicted of a crime.
Under federal law, the government obliges individuals arrested for specific unlawful acts to give DNA
samples. These laws violates the fourth amendment to the U.S. Constitution which ensures the right to
the individuals to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and impacts against unreasonable
searches and seizures.
Pros and Cons
DNA profiling has numerous uses, both positive and negative.
Pros

Karl Marx and Marx Weber Essay
Karl Marx and Marx Weber The latter part of the nineteenth century was teeming with evolved social
and economical ideas. These views of the social structure of industrial society came about through the
development of ideals taken from past revolutions such as the Industrial Revolution which steamed

Weber was elected to the Soviet where he met Kurt Eisner, its leader. Eisner was a creative and
innovative man who seemed to know what to do when no one else did. Weber considered him an
archetype of the charismatic leader and wrote his theories under his silhouette. Weber s primary works
include The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism.
Weber can be said to agree with Marx concerning the alienation of the individual in Industrial Society.
For Weber this centers around the rationalization of the West due to the spread of bureaucracy. Weber
s belief was that Industrial Societies inevitable trend was to more and more rationalization. Thus he
was certain bureaucracies were the most efficient and most rational known means of exercising
authority over human beings. Offices are ranked in a hierarchical order and their operations are
characterized by impersonal rules also appointments are made according to specialized qualifications.
Therefore bureaucracies were thought to be reliable, precise and stable. Bureaucracies were also based

The Importance Of Fashion
One of the most popular trends all around the world is fashion. Fashion is used to express how
someone feels without using words, and it describes the custom or dress of a person. Many people
think fashion is not important, but they use it every day. It embraces a person s inner beauty and the
way people do things. Fashion is not just clothes or hair styles, it s about how someone feels, how
someone acts, and somebody s perspective on fashion. First and foremost, how someone feels is
important when it comes to fashion because people want to feel happy and comfortable in their
clothes. Clothing impacts a person s mood, but the outcome is positive. For example, Danielle
Armstrong, is usually grumpy in the morning but when she throws on bright and joyful clothing, she
tends to feel better than when she woke up. (Hartley) Danielle put on a yellow dress, so she felt happy.
Clothing brings joy to many people, but the color must be bright or it could be there favorite color.
People who oppose of bright clothing are most likely to be in a bad mood, for example, a girl walks
into her class wearing black clothing from head to toe, someone else walks in with a bright red shirt
and a big smile on their face, the girl wonders why there so happy, turns out it was because of the
color clothing the person had on. (Satenstein) Also, fashion can change a person s entire life around.
There are many reasons why this could happen, for example, many people can suffer from depression
or anxiety

electronic commerce. The current system of payment is consisting of the merchant, customer, and the
payment gateways, the procedure is that the merchant receives the information of the customer s
payment and forward this information to a payment gateway in order to process the payment. This
procedure holds several risks to the customer s information because of the ability of the merchant to
save the information related to the customer and may misuse this information later. The other

The Non Technical Disadvantages The non technical disadvantages of the application of E commerce
can be summarized by the following aspects: The security and privacy issue, where it is hard to ensure
the privacy or security over the online payments. The lack of feel or touch of products during the
online purchasing process. The initial cost of E commerce, where the cost of creating and building of
the E commerce application in house could be a very high cost which could lead to a delay in the
establishment and launching of E commerce application because of mistakes, or lack of experience.
The resistance of users, where users might not trust the unknown faceless seller websites which will
drive them to mistrust the seller and make it difficult to switch from the physical stores to the virtual
online stores. The access to the internet is still not cheap for some customers and still inconvenient for
many potential customers such as those customers living in the remote villages. The rapid changing

  • 2. Scarface The Movie Psychology In this essay I decided to watch the movie Scarface (1932). This movie is directed by Howard Hawks and Richard Rosson. Its lead actors are Osgood Perkins, Paul Muni, Ann Dvorak, and Karen Morley. Scarface is a film about guns, gangsters, and pretty woman, it follows a story of a fast rising gangster who lives by the moto the world is yours, but once he finds himself at the top he is quick to find his world is tumbling down around him. Looking at scenes of sexual innuendo the film handled it with showing minor skin or even kissing. One scene of a sexual innuendo is the dialogue with Tony (Paul Muni) and Poppy (Karen Morley). In this scene you hear Tony say I m not hungry. Except for you. You got something I like hinting to Poppy that he is interested in her more than he is food. Even with the films restrictions on not showing a lot of skin or even a sex scene the directors were able to still put their points across to what the characters implied, and that there was a sense of romance between the two without having to show any explicated scenes. ... A kindergarten teacher who is teaching students to work independently and in small groups while learning about numbers must understand that the students are very diverse and have been taught in many different ways. • 4. Narcissism And The Recent Advent Of A 1 Question Scale For my discussion paper this week I chose to look at narcissism and the recent advent of a 1 question scale to determine narcissism. In particular I will look at how this study relates to concepts discussed in Chapter 2 of our readings. The scale and its development is outlined in Development and Validation of the Single Item Narcissism Scale. My interest in this subject is sparked by interactions with a family member growing up, who among other things, could be construed as highly narcissistic. From Wikipedia: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a personality disorder in which a person is excessively preoccupied with personal adequacy, power, prestige and vanity, mentally unable to see the destructive damage they are causing to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Reliability and validity seemed to be important concerns for the authors of this paper. They ran 11 different trials in order to rule out confounding variables and ensure that their one item scale was indeed positively correlated with actual narcissism. In total 2,250 participants were surveyed across a wide range of scenarios. In study number one participants were also asked to complete scales which are already known to measure narcissism such as the 40 item narcissistic personality inventory (NPI). This provides a way to cross check the results of their own SINS scale to make sure that it is valid. They found that SINS was positively correlated to the NPI with an R value of .40 and a p value of .001 Study 3 of this paper was used to access the reliability of the scale, that is to say, are the results of the SINS scale replicable? To accomplish this task 141 undergraduates from the University of Michigan took the SINS test online and then completed it again 10.9 days later in the presence of the authors of the study. The test retest correlation the authors found was r=.79. This is a fairly strong correlation, indicating that their scale is indeed reliable. In study 7 the authors were afraid that using an 11 point scale had caused some participants to undervalue their own narcissism because participants were unwilling to rate themselves so high. To remedy this situation the authors reduced the SINS scale to a 7 point scale and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Reoccurring Themes Of Evil In The Fellowship Of The Ring The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines evil as morally reprehensible and causes harm . Some will debate that evil is an inherited trait, while others will argue that evil is acquired over time. Throughout J.R.R. Tolkien s first part of The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring , there are reoccurring themes of evil and corruption, most of which surround the One Ring, and can vary depending on who possesses the Ring. While both natural evilness and developed evilness are demonstrated, The Fellowship of the Ring suggests that evil is not inherited, but acquired over time. Evil is prominent throughout The Fellowship of the Ring . Shortly after Boromir suggests that they use the Ring against Sauron, Elrond responds saying that the Ring, is altogether evil (267). The Ring was crafted with the sole purpose of evil. This is seen in the inscription on the Ring which says, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness to bind them (50). This script shows that the ring was created to draw other to darkness , which is often used to symbolize evil. While the Ring itself is evil, it is the only truly evil thing in Middle Earth: For noting was evil in the beginning. Even Sauron was not so. (267). Throughout The Fellowship of the Ring , there is a close correlation between the one ring and evil, as Elrond says, The very desire of it corrupts the heart (267). Lecturer s name: Kevin Manton Word Count: 1502 words Nationalism is a very broad concept that only emerged in the beginning of the nineteenth century. Before the idea of nationalism, people were loyal to their own religious spheres. There is therefore a general consensus that nationalism is a modern invention. (Kidd 1999) In Europe, people were attached to their religion, mainly Christianity. The concept of a national identity was inexistent. However, ever since the nineteenth century, people have started to see themselves as nationals of a particular nation. (Kedourie 1960) The shared characteristics of people within countries have created the concept of nationalism, where people feel bonded within their own nation. The main notion of nationalism stems from the fact that people share something in common and thus they have a national identity. (Spencer, Wollman 2002) This common bond can come in many forms political, cultural and territorial. Given the ever changing nature of social relations, powers and political systems around the world due to globalization, the idea of a nation and people s national identity may be threatened. Essay On Risk-Dependent Lncrnas 3) Risk dependent lncRNAs transcripts significantly recaptured both neural tube specific enhancers that were validated in vivo and the neuroblastoma susceptibility variations that were found by GWASs. In order to discover oncogenic noncoding loci, we first asked whether deregulated noncoding transcripts between two distinct risk groups over represent functional enhancers that have been evident by tissue specific enhancer activities and disease susceptibility alleles in neuroblastoma. To identify functional enhancers from transcriptome profiling, we have reanalyzed dysregulated transcripts derived from total RNA seq data (GSE49711, n=498, tumor cell content 60%) pertaining to neuroblastoma patients with risk stratifications (28). These in vivo validation was tissue specific, thus an empirical p value was also calculated per type of tissue and enriched for neural tube (empirical P 0.005, Fig 3D). We conclude that risk group dependent lncRNAs are a powerful metric to indicate tissue specific functional enhancers. A risk dependent enhancer was hereafter defined from the neuro tube specific enhancers if its locus overlaps with any risk dependent lncRNAs. Oncogenic signaling underlying these tissue specific and risk dependent enhancers is ready for interpretation. We identified 37 neural tube specific risk dependent enhancers, of which we observed three strong associations to oncogenesis below: We first inquired the TF binding potency, as the binding of sequence specific TFs to cognate motifs is typically required by enhancers to regulate gene expression (32). 70 human TFs showed significant binding potency (odds 1.5, FDR 0.001, with more than 10% instance proportion), with tumorigenic regulator FoxM1 among the top 5 (Fig 3E). None housekeeping genes were captured, agreeing with the idea that housekeeping genes are in general regulated by simple promoters (1). I am a positivist; we believe that knowledge is found via empirical observations (obtained through the senses). Positivism follows an identical approach as the study of natural sciences in the testing of a theory. Though their is a difference between the two fields the deductive approach works just as well in both. You create a theory, generate a hypothesis, test with empirical data, and see whether or not it confirms or rejects it (6). If it is confirmed by empirical means, then it is knowledge (9). I believe that the world can be objectively experienced and described, via quantitative research: collecting data, transforming it into statistics which then formulate into facts and uncover patterns (14). Ontology as Bell states is split up into two camps, by two questions, firstly: is social reality real, or is it a set of mental constructions? (12) Secondly, is social reality pre existing or is it created through our actions? (12) I am an objectivist; I believe there is a pre existing social reality, were social phenomena exist outside the influence of social actors. My assumptions, would impact my choice of research design by limiting my selection. More than 460,000 compete as NCAA athletes, and just a select few within each sport move on to compete at the professional or Olympic level ( Estimated Probability ). Everyone agrees that Americans have to improve academic achievement in schools today; however, it is hard to do so with a barrage of athletic activities. Students are focusing more on sports then academics, and this diversion seems to be costly. In order to fix this, high school athletes should be required to maintain a 2.3 grade point average in order to participate in sports because the primary mission of any serious academic institution must be to develop the young person s intellectual and cognitive skills and help one get recruited; also, there is a very low chance of athletes continuing their careers at the college or professional level. The primary purpose of any academic institution is to develop and prepare a young person for after his schooling years. In, The Purpose of Schools, Michael Peterson states the two goals of any school: to teach students who have specific skills to perform jobs, and introduce students to active citizenry (Peterson). One of the first connections that immediately made to the reading was the part where Miner talked about how the human body was viewed as disease and an ugly thing. How could someone view this of their own body? But that is exactly the way Americans consciously or not view our bodys. The way that we go to the doctor often and take vitamins or shots against viruses and disease. Often we are even required by schools that we have certain vaccinations. From depicting things such as struggling with disorders, problems with the boss, or average family life, most North American families are able to relate to the The Simpsons and that is why we keep crawling back each Sunday night. In the episode Mypods and Boomsticks, Bart Simpson meets a new friend from Jordan named Bashir. After learning they share many common interest, especially coming to food, Bart and Bashir become such good friends, Bart learns that Bashir is a muslim. After learning this, Marge is proud of Bart for meeting new people and stepping outside a comfort zone to meet and share new experiences. Homer s reaction is quite the opposite. Once word gets out that Homer s son has befriended a muslim, Homer s friends begin to spit stereotypes in Homer s face about muslims and the culture behind Islam. After long, persuasive conversations, half witted Homer decides to invite Bashir and his family to a dinner in an attempt to Assimilate them to American culture, this includes offering them Pork Back Ribs and a large american flag cake that Homer later states is Poisonous. • 23. Ernest Hemingway s Experiences Hemingway used his written work as a depiction of his own life experiences in a number of ways. Like many other author s he uses his stories and his poems to show his life. In stories such as Soldier s Home , A Farewell to Arms, and In Another Country he portrays the characters as a reflection of himself. In each of these examples Hemingway explains multiple different aspects of his own life including, his life prior, during, after the war, and his love of a woman named Agnes. Although these stories aren t exact descriptions of his life, they can be interpreted as depictions of his experiences. In the story titled, In Another Country , Hemingway speaks with an Italian major at a hospital. He uses the character named Nick to portray his own self. One example of this is My knee did not bend and the leg dropped straight from the knee to the ankle without a calf, and the machine was to bend the knee and make it move as riding a tricycle. But it did not bend yet, and instead the machine lurched when it came to the bending part. (Hemingway, Ernest. In Another Country. ) Hemingway uses this to depict his own real life leg injury that he went through when fighting in war. Another example in this story is when Hemingway has his character talk to the Italian Major. He conveys his own message through him speaking with the man. Why must not a man marry? He cannot marry. The 1950s is often viewed as a period of conformity, when both men and women observed strict gender roles and complied with society s expectations (Women in 1950 s). Society placed a very high significance on different expectations on behavior in public as well as at home. Women were to be homemakers, caring mothers, and to be an obedient wife to their husbands. • 27. Analysis Of Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree Essay Vic Gatrell s The Hanging Tree explores the opinions of average and lower class citizens on public hangings on England from 1770 until 1868 rather than the opinions of bureaucrats, royalty, and other elites as many similar histories do. He argues that the opinions of lower class citizens grew more and more unfavorable during this time, and the movement of executions to a private setting in the 1860s was a direct result of the diminishing support for public executions. At the same time, the gradual shift among elites and other government officials toward the abolishment of public executions was a reaction against increasingly unruly crowds and the squeamishness toward the spectacle of the execution (67). This book is organized into six sections with a total of 21 chapters. The first section describes the mentality of the audience present at public executions, and the second section covers the private opinions of plebian, or lower class citizens on execution. The third section defends Gatrell s argument that the outlawing of public executions was more of a solution to large rioting crowds than it was for humanitarian purposes. The fourth and fifth sections offer detailed accounts of specific court cases that demonstrate the unfairness and ineffectiveness of the Blood Code and public execution in England. Finally, the sixth section contains Gatrell s argument against those who deem themselves reformers who, in Gatrell s opinion, only reformed out of self interest to dispel ... Both countries are divided into districts with single member representation. However, the United States uses a majority system, first past the post, while France uses a majority plurality, two round system. With each system there are separate advantages and disadvantages. Nonetheless, the first past the post system used in the United States is more efficient, cost effective, and comprehendible to the average person. The United States of America elects the lower house of government using simple majority. This system can also be described as a plurality, or first past the post. The United States is divided into 435 different districts by population, with one individual representing each constituency. Members of the House of Representatives, the lower house of government in the United States, are elected every two years. Having a currency called the Yuan , China has one of the most successful economies of our time. Their structural reform in the late 1970 s and their integration with the WTO (World Trade Organisation) has enabled them to fully integrate with the world market and obtain several advantages leading to them being an export oriented economy (Yang Yao, 2011). China s devaluation has had significant effects on its own economy and the rest of the world such as making its exports cheaper and affecting the aggregated demand of China. The devaluation of the Yuan will also have an effect upon the imports by making them more expensive. In this essay these effects will be analysed to a greater extent. Theoretically speaking there are three main types of exchange rates. The first type of exchange rate is the floating exchange rate. According to Sloman (2015, p. 457) a floating exchange rate system can be defined as When the government does not intervene in the foreign exchange markets, but simply allows the exchange rate to be freely determined by demand and supply . The second type of exchange rate is the fixed exchange rate whereby the government fixes its currency to that of another currency. Introduction Network theory is becoming more and more used within football to help teams analyse and change their style of play. In football, the nodes represent the players of a team, the edges will be the passes between them and the weight will be the amount of passes between them. We will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The PageRank algorithm gives more weight to a link if it comes from a high ranking page. In terms of football this means a pass from a popular player is more valuable than a pass from a player who is hardly involved in the game. Player s statistics constantly change throughout the game and the PageRank score of a player depends on the score of his teammates so all scores must be computed at the same time and the algorithm is only finished once the game has ended. In summary, PageRank algorithm roughly assigns to each player the probability that he will have the ball after a reasonable number of passes have been made. [8] Mathematical Background One way to analyse players position is closeness centrality, which is defined as the inverse geodesic distance of a node in the network [1]: (1) Where Aij is the total amount of passes from player i to j. This formula uses incoming and outgoing passes as equal measure. This will show how well connected the players are to each other. Another way is betweenness centrality, which measures the extent to which a node lies on paths between other nodes[2]: (2) Where is the number of geodesic paths from j to k going through i and is the total number of geodesic paths. The PageRank algorithm can be defined by: (3) Where = is the total number of passes made by player , is a heuristic parameter that represents the probability of the player keeping the
