America is within the top four countries for the number of executions due to the death penalty since
1999. Citing the, Amnesty International in For What Tomorrow (2004), more than 1,800 people were
executed in 31 countries, the vast majority of these in China (1076), Iran (165), Saudi Arabia (103),
and then the United States (98) (NAAS, 43). The death penalty is currently an intense debate
involving the idea of whether or not we as people should be able to sentence another person to death.

positive effects the punishment has. However, it would be extremely difficult to apply these rules to
today, because of the many different crimes and circumstances.
Bentham was very against the death penalty and his proposed alternative to the popular punishment at
the time was life in prison with hard labor and even occasionally solitary confinement. When given
the choice between the death penalty and the life imprisonment of which Bentham spoke, he believed
that as a Utilitarian he must choose the life imprisonment. Bentham believed that the threat of living in

process. This would compare to the quick death they would receive if they got the death penalty.
There are five major points that he makes against the death penalty using his utilitarian theory. The

a social goal, or an economic goal. According to Clausewitz, war is the continuation of politics by
other means, and the reason why nonviolence resistance can be considered a type of warfare is
