Ruby Bridge Through My Eyes Essay Thesis
Imagine you love to go to this deli and you have been going to that deli your whole life. One day you
walk in and you see everyone staring at you. They say because of your skin color that you re not able
to come back. This actually happened in the 1960 s because Whites thought anyone who was African
American didn t deserve the same goods that Whites did. The African Americans started boycotting
and in 1964 African Americans got the same rights as everyone else.
Segregation affected the people living in the United states in many ways. One way is that African
American kids did not get the same education that Whites did. In Ruby Bridges Through my Eyes,
Ruby takes a test to see if she will get into an all white school. She goes to an all black school and
they don t have the same tools that they do in the all White school. In Segregation, the kids thought
that when they got the same rights they would be able to do the same things like swim. Their parents
were talking about how they would get a better education and make a living out of themselves. ...

In Through my Eyes Ruby s parents ended splitting up in the end because they didn t agree on Ruby
going to school. Ruby s dad though that it was a bad idea for Ruby to go to school and that they
should just do what the whites want. The mom thought that if one of her kids got a chance to get a
better education that Ruby should take it and use it to make a living. In the Watsons go to Birmingham
the mom and dad have disagreements because the mom says they should have stayed in the south and
the dad disagrees. Also they have disagreements where the dad says that in the North they give your
kids integration and none of the segregation nonsense. Then the mom will say at least in the south they
say what they mean and don t keep lying to look

Volumnia s Triumph in Shakespeare s Coriolanus Essay
Because Coriolanus is largely a stage of competing self interests, it seems wholly unnecessary to
acknowledge their centrality in the play. Most of these interests are ephemeral or situational, and are
thus without true devotion. Thus however enraged particular interests are, they are rarely triumphant.
However, Volumnia s self interest warrants noting, as she is consistently resolute and passionately
advocates her opinions. Her self interest ultimately triumphs over Coriolanus psychologically, and in
consequence leaves him vulnerable to be triumphed over physically. Assumingly on account of the
marginalized status of and opportunities for Roman women, Volumnia uses her son Coriolanus to
satisfy her otherwise unrealizable longing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As Sicinius remarks, Being moved, he will not spare to gird the gods. (1.1.254) Coriolanus assumes
that he deserves unrequited honor and consequently treats any and all who contradict his intentions
with the utmost disrespect. He is relentless and debasing in interactions with the plebeians, treats them
as if they are animals, and considers them unworthy of respect. What s the matter, you dissentious
rogues,/ That, rubbing the poor itch of your opinion,/ Make yourselves scabs? (1.1.161 163) Nearly
every word in this statement contributes to its abusiveness. He calls the people dissentious (though not
in their opposition to him), rogues (although the plebeians are the one s being denied rations, rights,
and respect), their opinions itches (because they irritate him) to be scratched, and culminates by
calling them scabs! Attitude is learned, and Volumnia has been Coriolanus most influential teacher.
While she insists that he be diplomatic and even fake when necessary, Coriolanus shows that he
cannot selectively curb his attitude. It is difficult to say whether or not Coriolanus seeks fame on his
own behalf is or does so on account of his mother s insistence. The latter suggestion is quite plausible,
as Volumnia continuously references the importance of fame and honor. She insists that Coriolanus
run for consul, saying, it shall hold companionship in peace/

Pros Of Confounding
To become a more thorough researcher, one must be able to evaluate and analyze the various
components of their study, including that of the independent and dependent variables, the participants,
the experimental setting. Even during the process of designing one s study, trying to design a study
that does not have confounding variables, it can be a difficult task with much benefits. According to
Halpern et al. (2007), the fundamental goal of psychological research: to discover the causes and
consequences of behavior (Halpern, Roediger, Sternberg, p. 131, 2007). Thusly, for psychological
research to show proper and true results without any alternate explanations, the study must be free of
confounding variables. If there are confounding variables ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having many measures in my study, with multiple readings and questionnaires, the order of the
materials could have become a confound variable. For example, if I were to let participants read the
manipulated trial transcript then complete the questionnaires, they could guess the purpose of the
study (which is not juror decision making). I believe that besides one analyzing their study, having
peer reviews is very beneficial for founding out confounds that could occur in one s study. For my
peer review group, the suggestion of changing the ages was beneficial because not only have I haven t
thought about the issues with the previous ages (18, 23), but I understand why the new ages (17, 21)
are more suitable. With the change of the ages at a more appropriate age, my chances of confounds
have decreased and could decrease suspicions from participants regarding the age difference. This
chapter has also made me aware of what experimental methods to lean on if I wanted to perform a
study that was correlational. Overall, being able to critically analyze the study and make changes to
avoid confounds is the best for experimental and correlational studies to remain internally valid for not
only that current study, but future research as

The Sex Of Sex Work
The world of sex work has been around for countless years. Hollywood portrays it as a normal way of
life in all the cowboy movies and put a glamorous feel around it. However, Hollywood is about selling
dreams and fantasy, though the reality is quite different. The reality is that sex work is dangerous. The
act in and of itself is not usually dangerous, nevertheless, the situations in which it needs to be
conducted are. Today s sex work incorporates more than just prostitution; the adult film industry,
Dom/Sub work, phone sex operators, together with exotic dancing are all considered sex work. The
focus of this essay has been narrowed down to just the prostitution aspect of sex work and the
decriminalization for the means of creating a safer environment for the worker. Decriminalization of
this particular type of sex work would render the job safer for the workers given that they would have
the ability to screen clients, an established place of employment, safety in numbers, a positive
relationship with law enforcement, and enhanced means to protect themselves from health risks.
Screening of the clients is a key aspect of keeping the sex workers safe. Screening the clients is a lot
about reading people, their clothes, their attitude, how they hold themselves and trusting the
experience of the worker s instinct. The screening process will not work every single time, however,
the ability to make the decision to go with a client or not can save the workers life. Escorts and

The Storm Eased
The storm eased. Clouds parted and allowed the golden rays of a Camelotian sunset to fill the room.
Taran and Veerah separated, but held hands, patiently waiting for Alis to check over their babies.
Meanwhile, Siti, Cait, and Asla offered hugs, kisses, and congratulations, then wandered out to tell the
men the good news. Your babies are lovely, said Alis, carrying over the first bundled baby and resting
the child against Veerah s chest. This is your son. I ll bring over your daughter for Taran. Gods, Taran

This tiny being had come into Taran s life perhaps a half hour ago, and he could never imagine being
parted from her. As Alis offered more instruction, Taran and Veerah swapped babies. Now he held his
son, Leo, who looked just like his sister, except with slightly less roundness to his cheeks. Leo let out
a grunt and opened his eyes. They were blue, Taran s deep blue, and Taran did not bother to check his
tears of love. Did you hear all that? asked Alis, a soft smile on her face. Not a word, Taran confessed.
Veerah chuckled. Don t worry, Alis. I ll relay anything he needs to know. I appreciate your knowledge
about twins, as I have little. I ve only delivered one other set of twins, so much I what I know is

Veerah to hand over their daughter. He held both his children, gazing at their beautiful faces, relishing
in the warm afterglow of new fatherhood. Taran, cradling his babies, was at peace, and would remain
so as long as his children stayed happy and healthy. And he would do everything in his power to see
that happened. XXXX Tell us again how you cursed at Taran during the delivery, Veerah, said Bili,
slapping his thigh and laughing. He, the rest of the men, the women, Taran, Ilene, and Llacheu sat on

Psy 220 Vitiligo Case Studies
Case Study: Vitiligo
Katelynn Schnepper
PHGY 220 Gerald McGraw
October 4, 2014
Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder that affects the pigmentation of the skin. Pigment is what gives the
skin color and is produced by cells called melanocytes. In the disorder, the body attacks the
melanocytes resulting in the loss of color in patchy areas. When the color is lost, the affected area
becomes a white irregular shaped patch on the outer layer of the skin. Vitiligo can affect a very small
portion of the body or affect up to fifty percent of the skin. The most common areas of the body
affected by the disorder include the hands, feet, arms, face and sometimes the genitalia. This illness
can be treated but it cannot be cured ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1665, a scientist named Marcello Malpighi came up with the idea that the skin coloring was mainly
dteremined from the granules of the stratum mucosum, not by those of the stratum corneum of the
dermis. In 1879, Moritz Kaposi was the first man to observe the lack in pigmentation in the rete pegs
of vitiligo. Rete pegs are epithelial extensions that project into the connective tissue in the skin and the
mucous membrane. About 4000 years of knowledge about vitiligo has been recorded and observed
from the time man first noticed the white patches appearing on the skin until the melanocyte was
determined as the actor for causing the depigmentation in the skin. Two to five million Americans are
affected by this disorder according to a poll in 1996. People under forty years of age are most
commonly diagnosed with vitiligo. The disease appears in middle stages of life and will be chronically
present from time of diagnoses. Vitiligo has been found in both genders and in all types of races,
affecting people world wide. Although when comparing the cases of vitiligo in the US and around the
world, people affected is between 0.1 8 percent. Significantly lower than the US and Europe. About
one third of all patients have had family members develop vitiligo before the age of

Use Of Literary Elements In Stephen King s On Writing
Authors use literary elements and techniques as tools to convey meaning. These devices are the means
by which authors bring richness and clarity to a text. They express moods or feelings that allow the
reader to connect with the writing. In On Writing, the author, Stephen King makes use of literary
elements to tell his story. The techniques King uses are effective in portraying vivid images and
feelings in the reader s mind. One example in which King uses such elements is early in the book.
King writes, Mary Karr presents her childhood in an almost unbroken panorama. Mine is a fogged out
landscape from which occasional memories appear like isolated trees .... the kind that look as if they
might like to grab and eat you (17). In the first sentence, King is describing the delightful grasp Mary
Karr has on her childhood. He depicts her memory as an unbroken panorama which creates the image
of a beautiful, wide view. The figurative language here is successful in expressing the totality of Mary
Karr s memoir, which King uses to differentiate his memory with. Next, he describes his memory as a
fogged out landscape , which conveys that his recollections are hazy and disjointed. King mentions
earlier that he lived an odd, herky jerky childhood, and moved around a lot in his earliest years. The
figurative language he uses is an another way of making this clear in the reader s mind. Then, King
uses the simile, like isolated trees to illustrate a barren image, which enforces

What s the harm? I got home safe. That is what most people say after drinking and driving, but what

American Transcendentalist Writers Essay
Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the
Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was
once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles.
Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph
Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of
writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and
untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the
more `popular and recent Mark Twain.
Let us begin with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message,
and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America,
there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of
the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open
pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour
in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image
of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he
begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the
question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little
of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist
America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine?
Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also
attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within
the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts.
Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had

After the Abbasids took power, Jabir went back to Kufa. He began his career practicing medicine,
under the patronage of a Vizir (from the noble Persian family Barmakids) of Caliph Harun al Rashid.
His connections to the Barmakid cost him dearly in the end. When that family fell from grace in 803,
Jabir was placed under house arrest in Kufa, where he remained until his death. It has been asserted
that Jabir was a student of the sixth Imam Ja far al Sadiq and Harbi al Himyari;[9][17] however, other
scholars have questioned this theory.[18] The Jabirian corpus[edit] An illustration of the various

many of these works consist of commentaries and additions by his followers,[citation needed]

Character Manipulation in Howells The Rise of Silas Lapham
Of all the characters who undergo change in The Rise of Silas Lapham, Lapham s change is the only
one looked upon in a positive light by the narrator. William Dean Howells uses the corruption of other
characters to promote Lapham s newfound morality and reinforce his ultimate triumph. Before
Lapham s financial ruin, he is the only character with fault. Yet as his world crumbles, so does the
credibility and innocence of his wife, two daughters, and former partner, Mr. Rogers. At the same
time, the very catalyst of Lapham s ruin exonerates him. This allows Howells to reinforce Lapham s

one speck (123) is removed, and his rise to moral perfection and humility begins. To underline this,
Howells at the same time destroys Mrs. Lapham s so diligently established perfect character.
Howells cleverly uses Mrs. Lapham s morality to bring about her demise. It is Mrs. Lapham s pushing
her husband to come clean with Rogers that eventually leads to his economic ruin. Perhaps this is why
she fails him when Rogers comes to the house to beg for their cooperation:
Lapham glanced again at his wife; her head had fallen; he could see that she was so rooted in her old

upon her; he perceived now that when he had thought it was for him alone to decide, he had counted
upon her just spirit to stay his own in its struggle to be just.(305)

Existentialism and Rebt
Existential Therapy and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
Integrated Approach to Counseling
During a lifetime, most individuals question the meaning of their existence at one point or another.
Existential therapy aims to help individuals find purpose, have better defined goals, and live life to the
fullest. Existential therapy takes into account cultural, social and political values of the client. It
attempts to help the client live more deliberately, while accepting life s unpredictable challenges and
contradictions. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is complementary to existential therapy
by providing techniques to help clients make changes once their awareness is increased through

There are many reasons why individuals are afraid of death: inability to take care of dependents, pain
and sadness that loved ones will feel, or fear of the afterlife. But one of the most common reasons is
the fear of nothingness and loss of self (Yalom, 1980). Death anxiety can manifest itself in many
different ways (Yalom, 1980). One s feeling of missing exciting events or the desire to control the
surrounding world, demonstrate this manifestation. These unhealthy thoughts help individuals ease
fear of death by dealing not with the real and terrifying source of anxiety, but indirectly, through more
socially acceptable actions. Many people protect themselves from death anxiety by denying it. Yalom
(1980) discussed two ways that accomplish this goal: the ultimate rescuer and personal specialness.
Both ideas lead people to feel that they will not be affected by misfortune like others might be. The
ultimate rescuer is a type of defense mechanism leading people to believe that someone will come into
their life and save them from their problems. An example of this would be a person with severe
financial problems needing money to take care of health problems believing that someone or
something will bring the needed money and the situation will work itself out. Personal specialness
involves the belief that one is in a way different from others and therefore immune from the hardships
of life. Personal specialness

The Pros And Cons Of Cochlear Implants
Cochlear Implants are an object that is very controversial in the deaf community. A Cochlear Implants
is a device that provdes direct electrical stimulation to the auditory (hearing) nerve in the inner ear. (
Cochlear Implants ) Cochlear Implants bypass the damaged hair cells, and directly stimulate the
auditory nerve. Depending on when the Cochlear Implant is implanted it allows people to hear sounds,
and sometimes even their own voice. While it does not cure hearing loss or deafness, it does allow
people to hear. On more technical terms a Cochlear Implant includes parts like a microphone, speech
processor, and a transmitter which each play a different part in the Cochlear Implant. The microphone
picks up sounds, sends them to the speech processer, and then the speech processor analyzes and
digitized the sound signal, thus sending them to a transmitter worn on the head. The debate of whether
or not Cochlear Implants are right in the deaf community is one that has been going on for years.
People believe having Cochlear Implants are a good thing, because they allow deaf people to
communicate with hearing people, it allows people who are not helped by conventional hearing aids to
be helped, and it creates new possibilities for deaf people. However there are also people that argue
that having a Cochlear Implant is a bad thing, because it proposes the idea that deaf people need to be
fixed, it can give deaf people false hope, and it proposes the idea that deaf people have a

Demian, tells the story of an older man s reflection on his childhood. Throughout the novel, main
character Emil Sinclair struggles to find a purpose and meaning for his life. He faces many difficulties
in an attempt to find himself. This is a novel of self discovery and the pursuit of happiness. Because
Hesse displays a power struggle between two elements of binaries, the binaries mirror the struggles
that Sinclair faces and his final acceptance of this. The novel begins with recollections of 10 year old
Sinclair. Hesse illustrates the two realms or worlds that Sinclair is aware of at this age. One world is of
light and one world is of darkness. The world of light consists of everything good, pure, and innocent
while the world of darkness is everything evil, sin and deceit. It was wonderful that here among us
there was peace, order, and repose, duty and a clear conscience, forgiveness and love and wonderful
that all the rest existed, all those noisy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having grown up in the world of light, Sinclair believed in the bible and all things God. This also
means he believed in the Devil. When he enters the dark world, he begins to experience the Devil
more than God for the very first time. This is really hard on Sinclair and he was living as frightened
and tormented as a ghost (Hesse 15). It isn t until he learns about Abraxas that he finally understands
the purpose of these two binaries. But it seems that Abraxas has a much greater significance. We may
look upon the name as that of a deity who had the symbolic task combining the godlike and the
devilish (Hesse 60). Understanding Abraxas and his significance is able to put Sinclair at some peach

Microsoft, Microsoft And Microsoft
Later, US Justice Department filed antitrust charges in 1998 against the software company, claiming
that Microsoft had taken over the internet browser competition and limited consumer choice. In view
of antitrust regulation in the US and EU, and increasing competition in the desktop software market,
Microsoft was determined to move beyond the PC software industry. By formally recognizing the
emerging business opportunities introduced by the new internet era ( Web 2.0 ), Microsoft began to
reinvent itself. It wanted to extend its software products into web based services for businesses and
consumers. It wanted to try new sectors such as media, television set top boxes, game consoles and
other broader technology services. Microsoft aimed to transform itself and wanted to set a standard for
accessing, communicating and doing business over the internet.
Microsoft had entered various new markets in which it has no propriety advantages with it s new
diversification strategy. Microsoft could not conquer all the markets alone as they would have to face
new challenges and many industries were against Microsoft getting into their industry as they feared
that Microsoft would monopolize the market. Hence, it improved its already existing as well as
created new partnerships in the newly targeted industry. Microsoft hence, needed to constantly
monitor the dynamic changes in the markets and adjust its strategies to capture opportunities in these
markets.

A Pair Of Silk Stockings Gender Roles
In the short story A Pair of Silk Stockings written by Kate Chopin she explores stereotypical female
roles. These include thinking of her family before herself, as well as creating cloths for her children,

her hands on 15 dollars and is looking to spend it which she has started to plan out. She says A dollar

The Literary Representation Of History
Le drame de l Afrique, c est que l homme africain n est pas assez entré dans l histoire. (SARKOZY).
Discuss the literary representation of history in relation to this controversial statement.
Considered as la parole officielle française la plus raciste depuis longtemps , Nicholas Sarkozy s 2007
speech in Dakar elicited widespread disapproval (Heams, 2007). In highlighting a binary opposition
between France and Africa; the progressive and the stagnant, Sarkozy reinforced a euro centric idea of
progress whilst criticising the inadequate insertion of l homme africain into history (Sarkozy, 2007). In
the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Europeans similarly believed that Africa lacked a

Whilst the main body of the text serves to represent the history of the Baoulé people and their leader,
Queen Pokou; in constantly questioning and subverting the narrative, Tadjo constructs alternative
endings to the well known legend of the Ivory Coast (Ligaga, 2011: 488). One chapter that best
exemplifies the dual meaning of histoire is La Traversée de l Atlantique , where Tadjo rewrites the
original legend in the context of the transatlantic slave trade. Here, the use of language is emotive,
enabling Tadjo to stress the cruelty of the trade. For example, the use of metonymy when describing
the captives on their passage is unsettling (Cazenave and Célérité, 2011: 75 76). Corps contre corps,
ballottés par les vagues (Tadjo, 2005: 58). This dehumanises the slaves and parallels their worth with
that of commodities, as subalterns, corps . Similarly, the repetition of corps , elicits a disturbing image
of slaves, both alive and dead, in close proximity in the hold. In grounding this version of the narrative
in fact, Tadjo intensifies the emotional impact on the reader. We thus sympathise with the victims on
both a factual and fictional level. The use of three successive nouns, ils avaient perdu leur visage, leur
nom, leur lendemains , enables Tadjo to further illustrate the process of dehumanisation during the
journey across the Atlantic (Tadjo, 2005: 59). They

In The Time Of The Butterflies Expository Essay
There are many instances of Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor being applicable to In
the Time of the Butterflies. One such instance of this is the appearance of the bible in the novel.
Religion had a large impact on the Mirabal sisters, especially Patria who was more in touch with her
religion than the other sisters. This is increasingly apparent in her views of Pedrito who she calls her
earthly groom. Also, Trujillo is similar to a god through his use of spies, through which he can see

We Are What We Eat Analysis
The importance of food to identity formation is certainly not unique to the immigrant experience.
Whether a part of invisible majority culture or deviant minority culture, food environments influence
our constructions of credos and categories. Generally speaking, eating preferences and behaviors are
part of familial and societal legacies. We may prepare the signature dishes of deceased relatives to
mark holidays or guard the secret ingredients of a family recipe. In other instances, particular spices
may evoke strong emotions or memories in us. Even in disordered eating behaviors, we tend to reflect
social values and constraints.145

Incidentally, food is one of the habits that immigrants in the US often maintain to some degree, even
as many other cultural practices slowly decline. 147 Several factors support this phenomenon,
including food s ability to: provide the immigrants with a daily portion of home, communicate cultural
values and social economies, as well as aid in the process of economic mobility. Food literature
expresses this legacy of migration, reflecting these same beliefs and their consequences.
For this reason, the identity discourse on food and survival resembles the lived experience of early
Arab immigrants.148 Like many other immigrant populations, they formed ethnic enclaves, in which
they continued many of their previous cultural practices, including those that involved food.
As Naff chronicles in her detailed history, Becoming American: The Early Arab Immigrant
Experience, Each settlement was, in fact, a stage on which the memories of village life were
reenacted. 149 Naff goes on to describe the eating habits of these early settlements, which preserved
Syrian foodways as much as possible. She writes: Their preference

Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich s Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed
as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich
finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a
background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in

the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the excitement that
she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that she does in fact
have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the progression in the

Primo Levi s If This Is A Man
Primo Levi employs a cool and calculated tone throughout If This Is a Man to emphasize key
moments and gives the reader a peak into what it means to survive the Holocaust. I believe that the
reader was incredibly effective at getting his message across in the book. That despite what you may
think, it was unimaginable what the Jews went through at the hands of the Germans. The book also
gets across that although Levi survived the Holocaust he didn t make it out unscathed.
The detached and scientific tone of this book works remarkably well, making the atrocities even more
unnerving because Levi is so matter of fact about them. However, there are moments where he allows
the reader to feel his pain. In the preface to If This Is a Man, Levi claims that he was lucky to get
deported to Auschwitz in 1944 because Owing to the scarcity of labor, to length of the average
lifespan of the prisoners destined for elimination... temporarily suspended killings of the at the whims
of individuals. This gives the reader an impression that maybe now the conditions aren t so bad at the
camp. However, later in the first chapter Levi describes his arrival at Auschwitz, saying that only
ninety six men and twenty nine women entered Auschwitz and more than five hundred people from
the convoy were killed. The matter of fact tone of the statement is met with this: This is the reason
three year old Emilia died: the historical necessity of killing the children of Jews was self
demonstrative to the Germans . Allowing us a peak of how he may feel and leaves the reader ... Show

Dr. Connie Bertka s essay, A Primer on Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism, expands on
Kingsolver s idea that science and religion have cohabited by explaining how science and religion are
formative elements that shape society and serves to contribute to the common good. The relationship
between science and religion can be described as a conflict approach which means that science sets
the standard of truth to which religion must adhere to or be dismissed or religion sets the standard to
which science must conform. On the other hand, science and religion can form an interactive
relationship in which ideas converge from a scientific and religious perspective. Dr. Bertka mentions
that religion and science can be taught in a classroom, since their interactive relationship can
constructively benefit from engagement, since they both lead to individual insight and communal

Credit cards have become the most common way to pay for large purchases; however, using a credit
card means you will be paying more for a purchase due to the interest gained. Simply saving for a
purchase over time, called a sinking fund, will be worth it when the purchase can be completely paid
in cash. Saving up cash has no interest on it, which means a purchase will be cheaper paid in cash than
on a credit card. Establishing a time frame to save up for a specific goal will prevent borrowing
money. One easy way to save money is to put away a certain amount of money into a savings account
every month. Moreover, it s important not to ease up or decrease the amount of money going into the
account. Bank systems have even produced a way to automatically transfer money into the account.
Another important aspect of saving should be to create an emergency fund, but make sure it is separate
from other saving accounts. Emergencies occur in everyone s life and being prepared for whatever life
brings is being one step ahead of the game. Once the monthly expenses are calculated in a budget, it s
a good idea to create an emergency fund containing three to six months worth of expenses. The quote
save for a rainy day is what an emergency fund is for. Saving money takes discipline, but it will help

  • 2. Ruby Bridge Through My Eyes Essay Thesis Imagine you love to go to this deli and you have been going to that deli your whole life. One day you walk in and you see everyone staring at you. They say because of your skin color that you re not able to come back. This actually happened in the 1960 s because Whites thought anyone who was African American didn t deserve the same goods that Whites did. The African Americans started boycotting and in 1964 African Americans got the same rights as everyone else. Segregation affected the people living in the United states in many ways. One way is that African American kids did not get the same education that Whites did. In Ruby Bridges Through my Eyes, Ruby takes a test to see if she will get into an all white school. She goes to an all black school and they don t have the same tools that they do in the all White school. In Segregation, the kids thought that when they got the same rights they would be able to do the same things like swim. Their parents were talking about how they would get a better education and make a living out of themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Through my Eyes Ruby s parents ended splitting up in the end because they didn t agree on Ruby going to school. Ruby s dad though that it was a bad idea for Ruby to go to school and that they should just do what the whites want. The mom thought that if one of her kids got a chance to get a better education that Ruby should take it and use it to make a living. In the Watsons go to Birmingham the mom and dad have disagreements because the mom says they should have stayed in the south and the dad disagrees. Also they have disagreements where the dad says that in the North they give your kids integration and none of the segregation nonsense. Then the mom will say at least in the south they say what they mean and don t keep lying to look ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Volumnia s Triumph in Shakespeare s Coriolanus Essay Because Coriolanus is largely a stage of competing self interests, it seems wholly unnecessary to acknowledge their centrality in the play. Most of these interests are ephemeral or situational, and are thus without true devotion. Thus however enraged particular interests are, they are rarely triumphant. However, Volumnia s self interest warrants noting, as she is consistently resolute and passionately advocates her opinions. Her self interest ultimately triumphs over Coriolanus psychologically, and in consequence leaves him vulnerable to be triumphed over physically. Assumingly on account of the marginalized status of and opportunities for Roman women, Volumnia uses her son Coriolanus to satisfy her otherwise unrealizable longing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Sicinius remarks, Being moved, he will not spare to gird the gods. (1.1.254) Coriolanus assumes that he deserves unrequited honor and consequently treats any and all who contradict his intentions with the utmost disrespect. He is relentless and debasing in interactions with the plebeians, treats them as if they are animals, and considers them unworthy of respect. What s the matter, you dissentious rogues,/ That, rubbing the poor itch of your opinion,/ Make yourselves scabs? (1.1.161 163) Nearly every word in this statement contributes to its abusiveness. He calls the people dissentious (though not in their opposition to him), rogues (although the plebeians are the one s being denied rations, rights, and respect), their opinions itches (because they irritate him) to be scratched, and culminates by calling them scabs! Attitude is learned, and Volumnia has been Coriolanus most influential teacher. While she insists that he be diplomatic and even fake when necessary, Coriolanus shows that he cannot selectively curb his attitude. It is difficult to say whether or not Coriolanus seeks fame on his own behalf is or does so on account of his mother s insistence. The latter suggestion is quite plausible, as Volumnia continuously references the importance of fame and honor. She insists that Coriolanus run for consul, saying, it shall hold companionship in peace/ ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Pros Of Confounding To become a more thorough researcher, one must be able to evaluate and analyze the various components of their study, including that of the independent and dependent variables, the participants, the experimental setting. Even during the process of designing one s study, trying to design a study that does not have confounding variables, it can be a difficult task with much benefits. According to Halpern et al. (2007), the fundamental goal of psychological research: to discover the causes and consequences of behavior (Halpern, Roediger, Sternberg, p. 131, 2007). Thusly, for psychological research to show proper and true results without any alternate explanations, the study must be free of confounding variables. If there are confounding variables ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having many measures in my study, with multiple readings and questionnaires, the order of the materials could have become a confound variable. For example, if I were to let participants read the manipulated trial transcript then complete the questionnaires, they could guess the purpose of the study (which is not juror decision making). I believe that besides one analyzing their study, having peer reviews is very beneficial for founding out confounds that could occur in one s study. For my peer review group, the suggestion of changing the ages was beneficial because not only have I haven t thought about the issues with the previous ages (18, 23), but I understand why the new ages (17, 21) are more suitable. With the change of the ages at a more appropriate age, my chances of confounds have decreased and could decrease suspicions from participants regarding the age difference. This chapter has also made me aware of what experimental methods to lean on if I wanted to perform a study that was correlational. Overall, being able to critically analyze the study and make changes to avoid confounds is the best for experimental and correlational studies to remain internally valid for not only that current study, but future research as ... • 5. The Sex Of Sex Work The world of sex work has been around for countless years. Hollywood portrays it as a normal way of life in all the cowboy movies and put a glamorous feel around it. However, Hollywood is about selling dreams and fantasy, though the reality is quite different. The reality is that sex work is dangerous. The act in and of itself is not usually dangerous, nevertheless, the situations in which it needs to be conducted are. Today s sex work incorporates more than just prostitution; the adult film industry, Dom/Sub work, phone sex operators, together with exotic dancing are all considered sex work. The focus of this essay has been narrowed down to just the prostitution aspect of sex work and the decriminalization for the means of creating a safer environment for the worker. Decriminalization of this particular type of sex work would render the job safer for the workers given that they would have the ability to screen clients, an established place of employment, safety in numbers, a positive relationship with law enforcement, and enhanced means to protect themselves from health risks. Screening of the clients is a key aspect of keeping the sex workers safe. Screening the clients is a lot about reading people, their clothes, their attitude, how they hold themselves and trusting the experience of the worker s instinct. The screening process will not work every single time, however, the ability to make the decision to go with a client or not can save the workers life. Escorts and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Storm Eased The storm eased. Clouds parted and allowed the golden rays of a Camelotian sunset to fill the room. Taran and Veerah separated, but held hands, patiently waiting for Alis to check over their babies. Meanwhile, Siti, Cait, and Asla offered hugs, kisses, and congratulations, then wandered out to tell the men the good news. Your babies are lovely, said Alis, carrying over the first bundled baby and resting the child against Veerah s chest. This is your son. I ll bring over your daughter for Taran. As Alis offered more instruction, Taran and Veerah swapped babies. Now he held his son, Leo, who looked just like his sister, except with slightly less roundness to his cheeks. Leo let out a grunt and opened his eyes. They were blue, Taran s deep blue, and Taran did not bother to check his tears of love. Did you hear all that? asked Alis, a soft smile on her face. Not a word, Taran confessed. Veerah chuckled. Don t worry, Alis. I ll relay anything he needs to know. I appreciate your knowledge about twins, as I have little. I ve only delivered one other set of twins, so much I what I know is anecdotal... The women kept chatting, and Taran shifted Leo into his left arm, then motioned for Veerah to hand over their daughter. He held both his children, gazing at their beautiful faces, relishing in the warm afterglow of new fatherhood. Taran, cradling his babies, was at peace, and would remain so as long as his children stayed happy and healthy. And he would do everything in his power to see that happened. XXXX Tell us again how you cursed at Taran during the delivery, Veerah, said Bili, slapping his thigh and laughing. • 9. Psy 220 Vitiligo Case Studies Case Study: Vitiligo Katelynn Schnepper PHGY 220 Gerald McGraw October 4, 2014 Vitiligo is a chronic skin disorder that affects the pigmentation of the skin. Pigment is what gives the skin color and is produced by cells called melanocytes. In the disorder, the body attacks the melanocytes resulting in the loss of color in patchy areas. When the color is lost, the affected area becomes a white irregular shaped patch on the outer layer of the skin. Vitiligo can affect a very small portion of the body or affect up to fifty percent of the skin. The most common areas of the body affected by the disorder include the hands, feet, arms, face and sometimes the genitalia. This illness can be treated but it cannot be cured ... • 10. Use Of Literary Elements In Stephen King s On Writing Authors use literary elements and techniques as tools to convey meaning. These devices are the means by which authors bring richness and clarity to a text. They express moods or feelings that allow the reader to connect with the writing. In On Writing, the author, Stephen King makes use of literary elements to tell his story. The techniques King uses are effective in portraying vivid images and feelings in the reader s mind. One example in which King uses such elements is early in the book. King writes, Mary Karr presents her childhood in an almost unbroken panorama. Mine is a fogged out landscape from which occasional memories appear like isolated trees .... the kind that look as if they might like to grab and eat you (17). In the first sentence, King is describing the delightful grasp Mary Karr has on her childhood. He depicts her memory as an unbroken panorama which creates the image of a beautiful, wide view. The figurative language here is successful in expressing the totality of Mary Karr s memoir, which King uses to differentiate his memory with. Next, he describes his memory as a fogged out landscape , which conveys that his recollections are hazy and disjointed. King mentions earlier that he lived an odd, herky jerky childhood, and moved around a lot in his earliest years. The figurative language he uses is an another way of making this clear in the reader s mind. Then, King uses the simile, like isolated trees to illustrate a barren image, which enforces ... American Transcendentalist Writers Essay Following the influx of the puritanical style of writing in America during the 17th Century by the Founding Fathers, it could be said that what we now know as the collective `American writing was once created almost as an effort to distance its own style from that of other European styles. Perhaps not being incredibly popular outside their own circle of influence, writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalists began, in the 19th Century, to weave a new form of writing using philosophy as the `vehicle of thought . While this allowed them to explore new and untouched areas in the mind, it also greatly influenced many later writers from Henry Thoreau to the more `popular and recent Mark Twain. Although some critics may treat Walden as simply a text on the love of nature, Thoreau s message, and indeed philosophy, seems to lay deeper. Although he never openly criticises the state of America, there are certainly references to suggest that this text is somewhat a social commentary or criticism of the society in which he lived. For example he suggests `Better if [men] had been born in the open pasture and suckled by a wolf, that they might have clearer eyes what field they were called to labour in . Through this extract, and indeed through much of the text, we can see that Thoreau uses the image of nature to suggest his own ideal of society. It seems that by isolating himself from civilisation, he begins to understand himself through self realisation and thus establishes his own identity. From the question, `Why should they begin digging their own graves as soon as they are born? , we learn a little of Thoreau s philosophy on life: he disagrees with the collective identity of the increasingly capitalist America in which he lives, asking why should we passively comply with a capitalist machine? Similar to the way in which Thoreau isolated himself from civilisation, poet Emily Dickinson also attempted to question the values of this new society in which she lived, except this time from within the seclusion of her own home in Massachusetts. Clearly Dickinson s poetry was far from anything the American public had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

There are many reasons why individuals are afraid of death: inability to take care of dependents, pain and sadness that loved ones will feel, or fear of the afterlife. But one of the most common reasons is the fear of nothingness and loss of self (Yalom, 1980). Death anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways (Yalom, 1980). One s feeling of missing exciting events or the desire to control the surrounding world, demonstrate this manifestation. These unhealthy thoughts help individuals ease fear of death by dealing not with the real and terrifying source of anxiety, but indirectly, through more socially acceptable actions. Many people protect themselves from death anxiety by denying it. Yalom (1980) discussed two ways that accomplish this goal: the ultimate rescuer and personal specialness. Both ideas lead people to feel that they will not be affected by misfortune like others might be. The ultimate rescuer is a type of defense mechanism leading people to believe that someone will come into their life and save them from their problems. An example of this would be a person with severe financial problems needing money to take care of health problems believing that someone or something will bring the needed money and the situation will work itself out. Depending on when the Cochlear Implant is implanted it allows people to hear sounds, and sometimes even their own voice. While it does not cure hearing loss or deafness, it does allow people to hear. On more technical terms a Cochlear Implant includes parts like a microphone, speech processor, and a transmitter which each play a different part in the Cochlear Implant. The microphone picks up sounds, sends them to the speech processer, and then the speech processor analyzes and digitized the sound signal, thus sending them to a transmitter worn on the head. The debate of whether or not Cochlear Implants are right in the deaf community is one that has been going on for years. People believe having Cochlear Implants are a good thing, because they allow deaf people to communicate with hearing people, it allows people who are not helped by conventional hearing aids to be helped, and it creates new possibilities for deaf people. One chapter that best exemplifies the dual meaning of histoire is La Traversée de l Atlantique , where Tadjo rewrites the original legend in the context of the transatlantic slave trade. Here, the use of language is emotive, enabling Tadjo to stress the cruelty of the trade. Rhetorical Analysis of Cultural Baggage Essay Jenny Stout Professor Bowers English 1102 5 September 2014 Rhetorical Analysis In Barbara Ehrenreich s Cultural baggage, the topic of ethnic heritage is discussed as the author is responding to an acquaintance asking her what her ethnic background is. Ehrenreich finds her purpose for writing her essay in making readers aware that no ethnic background is in fact a background. She takes on a not so common viewpoint of herself as most people pride themselves in where they came from and the traditions of their culture, rather than feeling almost embarrassed to claim their background. Ehrenreich claims that she has no ethnic background, disregarding her Scottish, English, and Irish heritage. While others stand up and proudly reclaim ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ehrenreich was finally able to feel a sense of pride knowing that the race of none marches on. The author wrote her essay including several references to certain traditions that different cultures practice. The audience is assumed to have some general knowledge of different cultures, but nothing to extensive. The author also assumes that the audience is somewhat well educated due to the higher level word choices she makes. Ehrenreich is describing her realization of heritage to her audience in the possible hopes that the readers can either relate in some way or share some of the excitement that she does in her own ethnicity, or lack of. Ehrenreich was able to make her point that she does in fact have an ethnicity other than Scottish, English and Irish. It was intriguing to see the progression in the essay from the authors feeling of disconnect with her heritage to a sense of pride in her family that refrains from carrying on cultural activities. She recognizes where she came from and concludes that no tradition is a tradition, rather than trying to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Primo Levi s If This Is A Man Primo Levi employs a cool and calculated tone throughout If This Is a Man to emphasize key moments and gives the reader a peak into what it means to survive the Holocaust. I believe that the reader was incredibly effective at getting his message across in the book. That despite what you may think, it was unimaginable what the Jews went through at the hands of the Germans. The book also gets across that although Levi survived the Holocaust he didn t make it out unscathed. The detached and scientific tone of this book works remarkably well, making the atrocities even more unnerving because Levi is so matter of fact about them. However, there are moments where he allows the reader to feel his pain. In the preface to If This Is a Man, Levi claims that he was lucky to get deported to Auschwitz in 1944 because Owing to the scarcity of labor, to length of the average lifespan of the prisoners destined for elimination... temporarily suspended killings of the at the whims of individuals. This gives the reader an impression that maybe now the conditions aren t so bad at the camp. However, later in the first chapter Levi describes his arrival at Auschwitz, saying that only ninety six men and twenty nine women entered Auschwitz and more than five hundred people from the convoy were killed. The matter of fact tone of the statement is met with this: This is the reason three year old Emilia died: the historical necessity of killing the children of Jews was self demonstrative to the Germans . Dr. Connie Bertka s essay, A Primer on Science, Religion, Evolution and Creationism, expands on Kingsolver s idea that science and religion have cohabited by explaining how science and religion are formative elements that shape society and serves to contribute to the common good. The relationship between science and religion can be described as a conflict approach which means that science sets the standard of truth to which religion must adhere to or be dismissed or religion sets the standard to which science must conform. On the other hand, science and religion can form an interactive relationship in which ideas converge from a scientific and religious perspective. Dr. Bertka mentions that religion and science can be taught in a classroom, since their interactive relationship can constructively benefit from engagement, since they both lead to individual insight and communal discernment. ...
