GPS was developed in 1973 by the U.S. Department of Defense to provide precise positioning for military use. It works by using triangulation from signals sent by a constellation of 24 satellites to measure the distance to receivers, allowing locations to be calculated. GPS provides critical capabilities for military, civil and commercial users worldwide by determining location, speed, and direction for applications like emergency services, aviation, and navigation on land, sea and in the air.

8. GPS works in six logical steps: The basis of GPS is ‘triangulation’ from satellites. To ‘triangulate’, a GPS receiver measures distance using the travel time of radio signals. To measure travel time, GPS needs very accurate timing. Along with distance, GPS needs to know exactly where the satellites are in space.
