INTRODUCTION OF ‘GPS’ 01/08/12 GPS
Space-based. Global navigation satellite system. Constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. Provides location and time information. Maintained by U.S Govt. Freely accessible. 01/08/12 GPS
  HISTORY 01/08/12 GPS
Developed in 1973. U.S (DoD) for military had to have a precise form of worldwide positioning. Became fully operated in 1994. 01/08/12 GPS
HOW DOES GPS WORKS ? 01/08/12 GPS
GPS works in six logical steps: The basis of GPS is ‘triangulation’ from satellites. To ‘triangulate’, a GPS receiver measures distance using the travel time of radio signals. To measure travel time, GPS needs very accurate timing. Along with distance, GPS needs to know exactly where the satellites are in space. GPS must correct for any delays the signal experiences as it travels through the atmosphere. Finally (for us), we can now obtain the precise time and location from the GPS satellites. 01/08/12 GPS
USEFULNESS OF GPS 01/08/12 GPS
Provides critical capabilities to military, civil and commercial users around the world. Maintains future warfighter advantage over opponents. Being used now in cell phones as a popular application to implement the emergency (‘911’) location system. Calculates the speed and compass heading of the person or craft carrying it. Modernizing the global air traffic system. Used on boats, ships, airplanes, cars, and ambulances as well as by hikers, explorers and mountain climbers. 01/08/12 GPS
