Haloalkanes, alkenes, and alkynes are organic compounds that contain functional groups. Haloalkanes contain halogen functional groups where one or more hydrogen atoms are replaced by halogen atoms such as fluorine, chlorine, or bromine. Examples include chlorofluorocarbons which were formerly used as refrigerants but deplete the ozone layer when broken down by UV light in the stratosphere. The loss of ozone increases harmful UV radiation reaching Earth and has negative effects on human health, air quality, and agriculture.
