MEANING OF
FOREST
A forest (also called a
wood, woodland, wold,
weald, wellard or holt
) is an area with a
high density of trees.
Uses of forests
We know “The best
friend of earth of man
is the tree. “ When we
use the tree
respectfully and
economically, we have
one of the greatest
resources on the
 Forests are the lungs of the earth. It
is trees which absorb the carbon dioxide
released by the burning of fuel by man
and keeps the air fresh.
 The leaves use this carbon dioxide to
produce food during photosynthesis,
which is needed by animals.
 The leaves after photosynthesis
release oxygen which is a by-product
of photosynthesis into the atmosphere.
 This oxygen in the atmosphere is
needed by all living organism for
respiration. Without oxygen no animal
or plant can survive on this earth.
Forests help in improving the fertility
of the soil by the rotting of the dead
leaves and animals
The roots of trees help in absorbing the
water from the ground and bring it up to
the leaves. The excess water is sent out
through the stomata and so the water
vapour is released into the atmosphere.
 The forests help in increasing the
rainfall as this transpiration from leaves
increases the cloud formation and thus
brings plenty of rain.
Forests cover prevent soil erosion.
FOREST PRODUCTS
A forest product is
any material derived
from a forest for
direct consumption
or commercial use.
FOREST PRODUCTS
Timber
Grasses
Cane
Medicinal use
Fruit
Floss
Fibre
Essential oils
Bamboo
BAMBOO
• Bamboo is one of the fastest-
growing plants on Earth, with
reported growth rates of 250 cm
(98 in) in 24 hours
• Unbeatable strength...
Bamboo is the strongest woody
plant on our planet, with a
tensile strength superiour to that
of mild steel.
General Uses Of Bamboo
Decorations
From picture frames to room
dividing screens, bamboo can make
some elegant and exotic decorations
for the home.. Bamboo can also be
colored so that it can fit into any
décor.
Building materials
More and more furniture, flooring, and even
homes are being built with bamboo. It is
becoming a more popular building material .
The smooth floors hold up well in kitchens
and other rooms, and the furniture, bound
attractively with rattan or leather, gives any
room a modern look.
Fabrics and clothing
A fabulous trend right now is
bamboo fibers being used in fabrics
and clothing. Bedding made of
bamboo fibers is as soft as or softer
than most cotton beddings, and
drapes with the look of silk without
the expense. It is becoming a
mainstream trend to have bamboo
fabric products or clothing,
populating many major chain retail
stores.
Cooking
Cooking with bamboo is nothing new in Asian
culture. Bamboo shoots are a common food in
that part of the world, and have also migrated
into cooking utensils. Bamboo cutting boards
are notoriously good for not dulling blades on
knives as quickly, while bamboo utensils like
wooden spoons are excellent for not scratching
the bottoms of expensive non-stick cookware.
Instruments
Hollow tubes make excellent
instruments, whether it is a flute or a
drum, and bamboo is one of the best
bases for instruments. The light, durable
quality of the bamboo is coupled with
its musical potential, and creates some
of the most beautiful sounds that music
has ever heard.
Other uses of bamboo
• Pulp and Paper Industry
• Wood Industry
• Bioenergy Industry
• Automotive Industry
• Sports and Recreation Industry
• Electronics Industry
• High Tech Industry
IMPORTANCE OF BAMBOO
• Enviromental Restoration
• Bamboo for erosion control,
windbreaks and noise barriers
• Waste water treatment

WOOD/TIMBER
WOOD is one of the
earth’s most versatile and
probably most familiar
natural raw material and the
important role it plays in
our daily lives often goes
unnoticed.
IMPORTANCE
Wood and wood-based products are the
most important of all man's resources
for three main reasons :
 Wood is universal. It is a raw material
that can satisfy almost every
requirement or existence.
 Wood is abundant.
 The wood resource is inexhaustible.
THE UTILITY OF WOOD
 One of nature's greatest gifts to
mankind is wood. Not only does it
provide food, shelter, energy for warmth
and cooking, clothing, tools and 10,000
other products, but it renews itself
naturally .
 Products made from wood fiber include all
kinds of paper and board materials, cabinets,
decorative woodwork, mouldings, beautiful
furniture, construction materials, sports
equipment, parts for weaving and knitting
mills, flooring, home building, rayon and other
fibers, tanning chemicals and thousands of
other products that touch our lives daily.
ITS MYRIAD OF USES is staggering.
Wood, in its easy to recognise natural state
provides us with furniture, building
components, musical instruments, sporting
equipment, household utensils, etc. In its
altered (processed) form its role is not so
obvious, yet it is there, under the guise of
paper, fabric, glue, alcohol, rubber, food
medicine, etc.
Medicinal Plants
Since time immemorial
humans have been
depending on the forest
to cure them of various
ailments. Of all the
medicinal trees found in
India, the neem is the
most important.
Some of the plants used for medicines have been
listed below
TREE/PLANT MEDICINAL VALUE
Cinchona Tree An alkaloid, Quinine is
extracted from the
bark of the tree and is
used to cure malaria.
Curare Lianas This large poisonous
vine is full of alkaloids
used for treating
bruises, fever and
kidney stones. It also
helps to relax muscles.
Saw Palmetto Extracts from Saw
Palmetto's berries is
used to treat certain
urinary problems.
TREE/PLANT MEDICINAL VALUE

SPECIAL LEAVES
TENDU LEAF
Tendu Leaves plays
important role in
generating livelihood by
making bidi. Tendu leaves
also known as bidi patta in
Hindi.
• Central India is main
producer of Bidi patta and
Madhya Pradesh lead first
position in tendu leaves
production.
ARECA NUT LEAF
The Arecanut palm is one of the
important commercial crops of
Assam. It is a hard material and
has good tensile strength and is
available in abundant in most
parts of Assam. Arecanut sheaths
(extension of the leaf) can be
utilised for manufacturing
disposable plates and bowls.
These disposable utensils can be
used for serving and eating food.
OTHER PRODUCTS
Fruits
Fruit trees are an important source of
income and food for the rural
household. In some areas fruit trees are
commonly planted along the field
borders and around the wells. Mango,
coconut, orange, pear, jackfruit and
many others grow wild in the forest.
FIBRE
Plant fibre has many different uses. Soft
fibres such as jute are derived from the
stems of the plant. Hard fibre from the
leaves of hemp and sisal are used to
make fabrics for various applications.
Coir, another form of fibre from the
fruit of the coconut, is used to make
ropes.
Tropical grasses such as lemon
grass, citronella, and khus are
the source of essential oils.
These oils are used for making
soaps, cosmetics, incense,
pharmaceuticals, and
confectionery.
There is a fun way to remember the most important
points in forest preservation called TREES which
means...
• Teach others about the importance of the
environment and how they can help save rainforests.
• Restore damaged ecosystems by planting trees on
land where forests have been cut down.
• Encourage people to live in a way that doesn't hurt
the environment.
• Establish parks to protect rainforests and wildlife.
• Support companies that operate in ways that
minimize damage to the environment
