Fmp weekly diary
1. Week 1
For week 1 I focused on my FMP theory which I researched 3 people or companies who are a big part to the sport I
am going to be focusing on in my trailer. So this first week has mainly been for me and my knowledge of what I am
going to be making. This part of the FMP is important to me because it is letting me get some knowledge in the topic
before I fully start the research which means that I can start research in a better way because I will know what I
want to research and also what I need to get out of the research because there are a lot of elements in the topic I
am doing. I have a few worries going into this project because unlike the surf film I know that I can surf to a standard
which isn’t bad to watch and my brother is a really good surfer that could make the clips interesting and pass off as a
real surfer in a movie. Whereas for the snowboarding and skiing trailer, I haven’t snowboarded in a long time and I
have never skied which means I am going to need to learn quickly so that I can keep up and film the other skiers.
Luckily my friend in a good skier who goes often and can take care of themselves which I can try and record in
different ways while he is going down the path or mountain. Because I have made a trailer before I have learned
different types of editing to go with the videos such as making all the clips look similar such as if it is a little bit
darker on a day because there is clouds blocking the sun I can edit it to make it look a little bit more vibrant so that it
doesn’t look out of place compared to the clips because it may be sunny on other days. I have also done visual
effects such as a 3d effect which pulls out different colours from different things which makes it super trippy, I have
also done VHS editing with exposure and green screens and I have done key framing text and objects such as the
Super Saiyan effect over a UFC fighter in a video. All these little editing skills can be helpful with different things or
help with different paths I want to take while making the video. I would say the areas I need to develop in is
definitely the actual skiing part of the video which I am hopefully going to get used to in the first or second day so
that I can focus on the filming part while doing it. Also I am going to need to analyse all the aspects and angles ski
and snowboarding videos and trailers include so that it feels professional and also has a lot of content which is
interesting for the viewer and lets them keep invested into the video so that they would want a real movie coming.
3. Week 2
For the first week of research into our project I decided to begin with existing products because this will allow me to
gather some information and also a look at what a normal snow trailer looks like and it gives me some inspiration
and guidance to what I am going to be adding into my trailer. I have been trying to get different looking trailers so
that I can have a wide range of different takes to snowboarding and skiing trailers which will give me the most
amount of information rather than just looking at the same type of trailers which will be boring to talk about but it
will also not allow me to have different thoughts on what I can add to my trailer because I will only know what that
certain type of trailer includes. I have done four existing products which have a massive vary of style, meaning and
editing which I have tried to breakdown and compare to other trailers and how they draw attention and keep the
audience entertained throughout the duration of the trailer. This is important to my research because I wanted to
have my own opinion and experience with the trailers before I did secondary and primary audience research
because if I didn’t know what they were talking about then having that same age experience wouldn’t work because
I wouldn’t know if I like it and can relate to what other people are talking about. I also did an analysis on the existing
products which let me sum up with I learned and also what I have been inspired by because when I start doing my
planning I can come back to that slide and look back at the summary and get all the information I need so that I can
start planning how I am going to be making my product. I have done around three thousand words so far going into
my research which I think is good for my starting week because the minimum is one thousand five hundred. I also
decided to try and find a female only trailer to see how successful that is compared to a male dominated trailer and
also who is watching them and comparing them because I think that is what is pulling more females to the sport and
movies because if it a female dominated trailer and movie other women will be watching it and get inspired by it
because they are becoming more popular and frequent nowadays. So the third week will be finding out all the
information about the trailers I have looked into and finding out the age and gender of the audience and also their
opinions on the different types of trailers.
5. Week 3
Week 3 of production research was heavily based on the audience with secondary and primary research. This will
help me understand the age and gender of the viewers and then most likely who will be watching my trailer for the
“film”. One of the sites I used to gather this information actually tells you the age and gender of the people on their
sites which is a big help for me because then I can see the charts and graphs they give to my advantage and look at
all the differences so that I can make a clear idea of who my audience is. After I talked about the audience I then
moved onto reviews and peoples opinions on the film because this would let me decide on what to add and not add
into my trailer because certain people hated things and others wanted more, I never really saw people dislike
something and then other people say they like it. It is usually everyone dislikes it and then they say what they would
replace it with or changed so that it would be better, and then you had the hardcore skiers and snowboarders who
wanted the film to be nothing other than pure skiing or snowboarding. The reviews helped with my recording
because I tried to implement what people enjoyed such as the scenery, fast skiing/snowboarding and soon to be
editing. These reviews were very important to my project and will be going forward with the research and planning.
After this I summarised everything that I did and tried to show that the things I talked about was important to the
project and also pointed out what was important and why. Primary research was the easiest part of the production
research because I had friends who had done different aspects of the sports which gave me a variety opinions and
also they had similar opinions on some questions which let me know that I could implement that and would be ok
with all types of person who does the sports. I tried to ask a variety of questions which I would add into my trailer so
that I could think about what people say about each element of my trailer and then change that to what I think
people would enjoy watching. I then finished the week with planning a production experiment that I am going to do
for my trailer because I liked the way it looked in a trailer I watched and it made it a interesting change during the
trailer so I am hoping to make something similar and also have the same effect on the viewers like it did with me.
7. Week 4
This week has mainly been about different problems I may come across while preparing, filming and making the
trailer because there are many elements that could fail or be mad impossible because of certain things not going to
plan. My biggest problem will most likely be the editing part of my project because I am having to constantly change
the plans for it because I either cant find a tutorial on how to teach me the edits I want for my video or I am going to
need to change my plans and find a new type of edit to replace the old one which may not work or may look out of
place because I wasn’t planning to use it until the last minute. I am going to try and change that by having a open
mind when coming in to edit my video because then I can find cool edits and go through my footage and find some
areas I can edit without thinking about that one edit I want to use. I am going to be testing different edits which I am
going to research and see if I can add that into my work to make it more interesting and unique and also have some
back up edits to add if I cant find any which can replace the main I want to do. I think we are doing problem solving
now because if something does go wrong we have had the chance to think it through before it has happened and
can prepare ourselves and overcome whatever has failed us at that moment without freaking out and ruining what
is going ok. My strengths in my project is my athletic ability because I am going to need to learn how to ski very
quickly (three days) and also make my trailer look decent so I know I am a fast learner when it comes to sport
because that is something I have managed to do throughout my whole life so having that means I could progress
and get to filming for my project quicker which would benefit everything. I think that my project at the this moment
is going smoothly with minor problems so I am hoping this carries on and I can finish with something I am proud of
without making it look rushed in any way.
9. Week 5
For week 5 I focused on experiments and finding the music for my trailer as I will need this for my trailer when I am editing it in
production week. The experiments I did was finishing the duplication experiment, glitch experiment and then the music
experiment. Finishing the duplication experiment was me trying to figure out new and unique looking ways to use the technique
so I have different ways to showcase the technique in the trailer so that it makes it look fun and keeps the attention of the viewer
so that they don’t get bored of the same thing being shown over and over again. After that I decided to look for a different type
of effect that I can use if I want to in my trailer which was something I can add to the duplication effect which would turn it into a
glitch effect. This could be used if there was a static sound in the music that I am using or I could find a sound effect to go with it
to make it look like there was a problem in the film or if I was wanting to make the video look retro. Or I could turn the glitch
effect into something that doesn’t come often and change the colours which could look pretty cool as a quick switch scene so
that it adds some colour variety and also making it stand out so people are drawn into the vibrant colours. The last experiment I
did was the music experiment which I had to find the music I wanted to add to my video which took a lesson trying out different
genres, paces and sounds to fit with what I wanted. After I found the music I wanted to use for my trailer I then wanted to edit
the music so that it fit with the duration of my trailer so I cut out a lot of filler music which would be the long introduction and
then the repetitive middle part of the song which is the same beat so I zoomed in on the music clip and cut out some of the
same beat so that it carries on like it would but it would be half the time then it would be usually which meant that I could still do
an introduction to my trailer with enough time to add small edits and fun to it while having a good build up to the main part of
the trailer which would be the actual skiing and snowboarding. These experiments will help my trailer in a positive way because I
can set up the music perfectly so that I can edit the clips with the music already well positioned and that means I can create
everything smoothly and in flow with music. The effects experiments will help add variety to my trailer and because I know two
new techniques that means I can add that to what I know already and have a good looking trailer. Because I have already got all
my footage, learning placement of the videos by watching and editing different types of footage would be a good thing to know
and learn before heading into the production week because that means I can have some knowledge on the placement of the
footage and it could look more professional because the footage would be layed out correctly and make sense throughout the
trailer.
