4. When researching for my Short Film rotation, I completed a
PowerPoint which included primary and secondary audience
research. When conducting my primary research I created a
survey based on peoples ideals for a short film. There were very
mixed results but all together, they helped me create a short film
which will benefit my audience. Included in this PowerPoint was
also a few slides on secondary audience. This means information
which you have conducted. When completing this section of the
PowerPoint I had to research the different statistics of the short
films to be shot in each region by year, I found out that London
shows the greatest variation over this time period. I also went on
the yougov website to back my primary research up, I found out
all the demographics and psychographics for this subject. My
short film is not targeted at any gender, anyone is open to watch
it. However, the yougov profile was said to be targeted at males
aged 18-24. However, I have focused my film for 16-24 year olds.
I lowered the age group by 2 years as I wanted the industry to
benefit by the younger audience as its not the most popular type
of film genre. I think I carried out my research out very effectively
but I would of liked to add more secondary research, there was
barely any secondary compared to my primary research. If I had
more time, I would of found more secondary research like
statistics and facts to add into my research PowerPoint. I think
5. Another side of my research PowerPoint was my
experiments. When I started this rotation on the first
week I conducted two experiments. One which was
focused on the filming and sound effects and the other
was just focusing on the Foley sound effects. I enjoyed
making the experiments as it gave me a insight into what I
would be doing in a few weeks time. To start off with I got
given a storyline where someone finds a key and I had to
create a film about it. I think the most noticeable
weakness when filming was I didn't know how to entice
the audience with my shots. I wanted to add some
technical shots in there like a focusing shot etc. I did not
know how to do this to I want to learn some technical
shots before I start filming my actual short film. The effect
which this would have on my product would be vital as it
can increase the atmosphere and even increase my level.
When doing the Foley sounds, I researched how to make
effective sound effects and went round college
experimenting with the different noises. This was very
effective as I felt it was one of my strengths when doing
the research. This was mainly because I knew how to use
the recording device and I knew what sounds I wanted to
6. When planning for my short film product I had to complete various
planning tasks. One of these tasks was the proposal. The proposal
consisted of specific word counts for identifying my audience, creating a
rationale and a project concept and so on. When creating the proposal I
found it very useful to write everything down so I have a feel of what I
need to include in my film and so I know what my film is going to be like.
I think the thing which I struggled the most with was creating all different
kinds of concepts and wanting to be more adventurous with the shots I
would create. Included in the Proposal was a schedule which had every
week and the overall plan. I wrote in detail all tasks which I would
complete in precise week. This means that when I got to creating my
own film I could use this schedule to make sure I keep on track of
everything. Another planning task which I had to complete was a Pre-
production PowerPoint, this included a storyboard, shot list, Risk
assessment and Contingency plan. This was all very straight forward
and I completed all the work in time. When I started to film my shots for
my product the planning really came into use, I knew my shots which I
wanted to create and I knew what I wanted the characters to look like
with creating the storyboard and shot list. This made my production day
very easy and relaxed. I was finished in 3 hours. When I completed the
risk assessment I found this rather hard as you have to think of any
possibilities that might happen which probably wouldn't have happened.
I would consider this a weakness and if I could improve anything it would
be to spend more time on the risk assessment. This would mean that I
7. Over the 5 weeks in which I have been planning and
producing my short film I would consider that I had good
time management as I had all my work in on time and by
the deadline which was set for that week of work. Time
Management is key when creating your own product. I
do feel as though I spent too much time on some of my
work which lead to not having enough time at the end to
finish my work off and perfect it. I do believe I could of
improved the film if I had more time. If I had more time I
would of reshot some of the shots which I included in my
film as some where out of focus or the exposure doesn't
look good. Another thing which I would have improved is
to create my own sound effects. I found it very tricky to
create my own gun shot noise as everything which I tried
didn't sound effective enough. I was running out of time
so I ended up having to get a royalty free gun shot sound
effect. I initially didn't want to use sound effects from
YouTube but in cases like this I had to. Moreover, I do
not think its noticeable that I ran out of time on my film as
everything is in place and all my shots and sound effects
are there. If it was not completed it wouldn't be exported
and on YouTube if I ran out of time. Overall, I think I
handled my time management really well and would only
improve the little things which are not very noticeable.

My film
Similarities:
Both of the films have been edited to
the same style.
Both posted on Youtube.
Differences:
I have included a different way
of showing the texts, if I had
more time I would of make it
like this.
Different time lengths.
11. Bitter Attachment is very basic and
looks pretty good. Most of my shots are
in focus and have good lighting
depending on the mood of the scene.
The visuals in my film I particularly like
is the scene to the left. I like this
because I added a pull focus technique
which gives the audience more detail
to what is going on in the scene.
When re-watching my film I realised that
there is quite a few bits which if I had more
time could have improved. To the right is a
screenshot from my film which I would of
liked to change. In this scene the
background was not lit very well, this meant
that when I was editing I had to move the
clip into after After Effects and try make the
lighting more brighter. Overall, I do think if I
had more time than I could of made my film
12. The target audience for Bitter Attachment was aimed
at any gender aged 16-24. I chose this audience as I
thought that they could relate to the storyline and
reflect from it. The surveys which 9 people
completed really helped when creating this short
film. It let me know what type of people wanted to
see a short film and what they found most interesting
about a short film. All the answers which I received, I
tried to add into my film.
Many 16-24 people enjoy horror films, my film is a
thriller which is similar to a horror. This appeals to
my audience as they like the thrilling aspect of a
horror film so they will find my film rather enticing.
The characters in my film look the same age as the
target audience, this makes my film even more
relatable as they all have gone/going through what
the other is feeling. The only thing which I wish I had
included was a male character, as stereotypically
males don’t watch a film with a cast full of females as
they have no one to relate to and can find it rather
14. What did you like about the product?
The storyline was very direct and easy to follow. I liked the way some
scenes were sequenced and shot, like when Maya steals India’s phone and
uses it to text Sim, the editing for this is all very well done.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The context of the line “Time is running out” doesn’t make much sense. It
doesn’t change any of my perceptions about the film and it feels a bit
shoehorned in. Aside from that, it’s all acted and shot pretty well.
15. What did you like about the product?
The products storyline is extremely clear and easy to follow. Most shots were
very focused with good lighting. Overall, the film was good.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The sound was very loud in volume so for future references keep the volume
minimal. Also, to improve your film I would make the audio more smoother
between the transition.
16. What did you like about the product?
What I like about the product is: how clear the shots link together. This
gives a clear indication on the story line which means the audience can
follow it easily and clearly.
Also, I feel like the audio works well and shows the mood perfectly.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
The improvements I would suggest making are: the audio to be
smoother. This will just make it less dramatic as the mood changes,
which will create a more effective film.
17. What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
When reading through the peer feedback, there are a lot of
improvements which I can agree needed to be made. For example,
Feedback 3 says about making the audio smoother. I completely agree
which this comment as if I had more time I would of added a more
effective fade and make the audio build up to the tense soundtrack.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
I don’t really disagree which any of the peer feedback as I think its very
useful as I now know there interpretation of my film and how they would
of liked more information.
18. Upon my peer feedback, I would change a few things in my film so it is
more beneficial for the audience.
Referring back to my feedback, I would take the first persons feedback
into mind and make the ‘Time is running out’ less shoehorned and make
it fit into the story. I think it would improve my work as it would add more
tension and more of a storyline.
When reading feedback 2, I would make the audio more smoother and
make it fade into the scene instead of the audio before that ending and
a second later the second audio starting.
Most of the comments which were made about my short film were
focusing on the audio and sound effects. The reason for this would be
that I started to run out of time when finishing my production time. If I
could make any changes to my product it would be spend more time on
the audio as this reflects my peer feedback.
What changes would you make to your product based upon your
peer feedback and why?
