3. Youth in York
Even though York is mainly an area for middle aged people and
for shopping there is a small population of young people still
hanging around it and do activities in it. Such as game, game has
made a LAN party area where you and your mates can go and
play games there. This area from what I have seen is dominated
by young people with very few older people in it. This is because
you can host parties there and it has tournaments for certain
games which appeal to a younger audience. Also you have
rowntrees park which has two big areas for kids to play, a skate
park, basketball court and a tennis court. This area is also where
most of the younger people go because there is loads of
different things to do there and also a lot of areas to meet up.
4. Skating
Skating can be made into anything if you edit it correctly, with
some edits having a cartoon outline around the skater which
changes and makes the skate clip look more interesting and
colourful. The reason skating could be something that I could do
is because in York there is a skatepark which is filled with skaters
that I have skated with and talked to and it is a little community
within York. This is something I could work with because it
means that the small population of young people in York could
be acknowledged and shown. So making a York art skating edit
could be something that is liked by the younger people because
it is something different.
5. Flooding
Flooding is a big part of York because it can happen so easily with
harsh rain. This topic would be a little harder to do an artsy style
to it because it is a more informative topic rather than a chill
thing to do. So it would need to be shown in a different way to
get the warning/message out rather than a normal informative
video. Young people in York would treat this as a more
educational thing that they need to know about because with
climate change we will experience more rain which can lead to
more floods and dangers as we are being brought up. But I feel
like the younger generation will be interested in it because of
what's happening with the world and the climate change
movement happening, so I think more people will be interested
in it more than ever.
6. Community
There is a strong community for skating or any skate park sports
in York. Rowntrees park and Zoo skate park are the two mains
spots for young people to go and do these sports in a safe
environment. The zoo is ran by people and is the only indoor
skate park in York, whereas Rowntrees park is an outdoor skate
park which is not ran by anyone. The reason I am talking about
these spots are because they both got communities that use
them regularly which shows the interest in the sports and why
making a skateboarding short film, trailer or some kind of video
including it could be a good interest for the younger people of
York. In the york press they say this about the community in York
“We also know that there is a strong and growing community of
people that love participating in skate sports and we want Zoo to
be the destination for all of these users.” This means that the
interest has reached local news and will also gain some new
people to come to the sport because they may find it interesting
and start watching videos and getting invested into the sport.
7. Audience
My target audience will be around 15-20 because this is the
main area of young people who are at the skate parks. You do
see a lot of really young people but they wouldn’t understand or
want to watch something like this unless they were really into
skating. Also if I am needing to do an artsy kind of skate video,
this means people are going to have to enjoy the type of editing I
put into it and also make it interesting enough so people will
watch the duration of the video rather than start watching it, get
bored and leave which would make me realize that the type of
editing I went for mostly didn’t work for the age range I wanted.
So I am hoping this age range will enjoy the artsy kind of editing I
am needing to put into it.
8. Primary research
I questioned my friend who has been skating since he was 14 years old mainly in York
some questions about how he feels about skating in York and other questions about
what he thinks about certain aspects of editing/music in skateboarding videos.
1. How popular do you think skateboarding is in York?
1a. I think York is quite low in terms of popularity compared to larger cities for skating
2. What music do you think fits with skateboarding videos?
2a. I think lots of different types of music can fit with skating and when it comes down
to it there’s a lot of dependence on the style of skating and editing for the video for
how it fits
3. Do you like editing in skateboarding videos, if so what type?
3a. I like editing in skate videos a lot as I believe they allow for a lot more variation and
for more of someone's personality to come to the forefront than if you were to just
watch their raw skate clips. And when it comes down to it I really enjoy all types of
editing in skate videos as long as they are done to decent quality otherwise it can
come across as tacky
4. What age range do you think enjoys skating?
4a. I think there’s quite a varied age range that can enjoy watching skating and if you
look at some of the prominent people within the scene there’s a great deal of
evidence with pros like Steve Caballero being in his 50’s whilst a lot of people get into
it at a much younger age such as myself who started at 14. It’s really like any other
sport where it just comes down to their personal taste.
9. Existing product – Luis Mora street edit
Luis Mora was the first person I thought of when I wanted to do a short skate video
with a lot of editing for the duration of the video. Luis has a wide range of fans
because he travels to different parts of the world and does really good edits of
skateboarding in the areas and he also creates small documentaries which showcase
different aspects of a professional skaters life or even a country where skateboarding
hasn’t been seen before. These draw new fans to his channel because of how well
made the videos are and makes people want to start skating which was one of the
reason I started. When you go into the comments of this video, the first one you
encounter is ”god damn you killed it with the editing” which currently has 810 likes.
His editing mixed with his friends and his own skating skill makes the perfect video
because everything comes together perfectly and he is really skilled with footage
angles and also the editing that comes with it. He also mixes anime with a lot of his
videos which may come from his big fan base in Japan because he focuses on a lot of
Japanese skaters to give them the recognition they deserve.
10. Existing product – Vans “no other way” video
The editing in no other way was a lot different to what Luis does in his video which makes it
something I enjoyed because of its simplicity in the editing but also the sick footage they
had of the skaters in different spots. At one point they had a throw back scene of someone
kicking them out of a certain spot which then stays in the same angle of them landing the
trick which was a really cool and simple transition to the trick but it also made it unique to
a normal change of scene. The change in quality and colour of the scenes were also
something I really enjoyed because they didn’t force the changes they fit in really well with
what was going on in the video which made it look cool but also didn’t feel out of place.
Such as the two skaters chilling in the closed area which you can see on the top left, this
just makes the video have a chill vibe to it because they are having fun just cruising
anywhere they want. They also include the skaters having fun such as the middle image of
him just goofing around which makes he video feel less serious and something you can chill
and watch without needing to feel that you must watch everything closely. But the skating
speaks for itself with the gnarly grinds and gaps they do throughout the video which
contrasts with the chill fillers.
11. Research Benefits
Audience research for this product would give me major benefits while
editing the video because the age range can affect music choice, editing
style, the speed of the video and what type of skating that is involved in
the video. This is because if it was a younger audience I would be likely
to not choose a song with a harsh or negative tone or if it had sensitive
lyrics which could influence a kid to start saying bad stuff. Also age can
affect the speed and tone of the video because they will grow and have
different tastes and also different attention spans. So being able to stick
to something that the age range I think will be able to keep up with and
understand will be the best course of action. Also research in the area
you are going to record is a massive plus because you can research
different spots to record and also know what to bring and prepare for.
Skating has a different type of recording style so learning how to record
like some of the photographers do then that could make the video look
more genuine and lets it fit in with the rest of the skate videos.
