The document discusses research on existing snowboarding film trailers to inform the creation of a trailer for an upcoming film project (FMP). Key points:
- The Art of Flight trailer uses suspenseful music, dangerous locations, and varied shots to build intrigue. Curt Morgan's directional style emphasizes wide landscape shots.
- Dark Matter stands out with its fast, disorienting editing and "sinister" music. It incorporates unexpected images and creative transitions.
- Full Moon has a relaxed, "chilled" vibe through its music and footage of the snowboarders having fun together off the slopes.
- The Collective mixes different types of skiing with smooth musical transitions. It
2. Existing Product â The Art Of Flight
The art of flight is one of the existing products that I am taking inspiration from and also it is going to be a guide for what I am
hopefully going to be making for my FMP. The only parts I wont be able to replicate is the helicopter shots and also the
snowboarding tricks because I am not on that level and neither is my friend. This trailer is directed by Curt Morgan, I have done
background research on him on my FMP theory power point and this movie is one of his best snowboarding movies he has ever
made. The trailer is full of suspense and it builds on that throughout the trailer until around half way which it then turns into a
teaser of some of the most extreme parts of the movie such as avalanches, big airs, falls and natural life in the most extreme
places. The music is really well done with the editing and also how they created the trailer because it begins with fast ticking and
a fast beat behind it which creates an unsettling and suspenseful feeling when watching the trailer. They put the music over clips
where they mention the weather becoming more dangerous and deaths have occurred, one of the pilots disagreeing and saying
how dangerous and stupid going to certain places are to the director and also a dramatic statement saying you canât escape from
the place they are wanting to film. For this to be the beginning of the trailer it really catches your attention and drags you into
watching the full thing which is what I am aiming to do because you need a really good beginning to keep the audience
interested and not just leave after the first 30 seconds. Curt also uses a wide range of angles and footage to keep the trailer
flowing and different throughout its duration such as low shots that only capture people walking and the snow moving to car
footage of the people having fun to the destination and then wide long shots showing the tricks and the extreme area they are
filming in so that people are constantly thinking about the dangers and skill that goes into this movie. I have also noticed that all
the tricks used in the video are in the air and nothing else which goes together really well with the name The Art Of Flight.
3. Existing Product â Dark Matter
Dark matter is a snowboarding trailer made by quicksilver and also Curt Morgan, I didnât know at the start that this was made by
him but after seeing the cinematography and all the wide long shots of mountains I had an idea that he could have been apart of
this because that is his style of video. This trailer is by far my favourite trailer I have seen so far while doing this research but my
opinion could change due to my lack of knowledge of the different types of trailers there can be in this area of work. Dark Matter
took a completely different route of trailer compared to the Art Of Flight trailer I talked about on the first slide. This trailer had a
bunch of editing, lighting and also hidden photos and a completely different feel to it after watching it. First of all this trailer is
only 1 minute long but has more action than the other trailers I have seen compared to the time difference. The beginning is
super fast and sinister due to the music being a sharp and disorientated sound which is completely different to a up beat
snowboarding trailer. The fast change in photos and videos at the beginning compliment the sinister music which makes it even
more intense as you get to realise there isnât just snowy mountains and snowboarding in the montage, there is eyes and dark
skies with moons bundled up with the other footage which shocked me as it is so out of nowhere with what I was expecting
going into this trailer. The fast pace stops for a moment when it changes to two people on the side of the mountain speaking
which then they use a really clever transition because the snowboarder starts to slap his knees which then triggers the music that
uses bongos which is a little comedy added into the trailer but also a smart way to transition into the next part which showcases
all the snowboarding and the editing such as the 3 person snowboarder on the top right. It ends with a static beep to change the
text which makes it go back to this mysterious, sinister feel and also the editing is amazing but dark at the same time. I have done
this type of editing before so if I get a good shot of a mountain, I may add this type of editing into the trailer because I thought it
looked really cool and felt right with what they were going for.
4. Existing Product â Full Moon
Full Moon is a film trailer about a group of female pro snowboarders coming together to ride isolated mountains, this trailer is
the most mellow and chilled one out of the 5 I have seen so far during this research. The music and certain footage they have
presented during the trailer created a nice and relaxed vibe throughout the trailer which wasnât the case for the Art Of Flight and
Dark Matter. This trailer shows a lot of group friendship and community as there is multiple clips of the group dancing, eating and
messing around together in different scenarios. This type of trailer doesnât throw you into the deep end straight away as it
charms you with the connection you get and lets you see the amazing tricks and adventure they go and do in the trailer. I chose
this trailer to talk about because of the harsh difference to the other trailers and lets me be able to pick what type of trailer I
want to do. Editing is minimal as it only uses text and a filter which goes over some of the footage such as the second to the left
where it creates a old look to the footage. The snowboarding footage has some length to it but its mainly fast and cut short
videos with some repetition to a couple of the videos they show. This was used to create a bit of suspense to the trick one of the
people did and showed the nasty fall leading up to the land which they cut short so that you get the satisfaction of seeing the
completed trick in the real film which is a method used on pretty much every trailer I have seen. There is also a lot of
advertisements going on through the whole video which I donât see often in the Curt Morgan trailers or Red Bull. This type of
trailer could be viewed by non snowboarders or skiers because it has the energy of a normal film because of the separation of
the snowboarding and the footage of everyone together. This is the biggest difference I have seen because the other trailers felt
like they were aimed at only people who are hardcore snowboarders with no other interest other than crazy and extreme tricks
and falls. Overall Full Moon is the closest to a films trailer rather than a snowboarding only trailer which could work depending on
what type of footage I am left with after the trip to Norway.
5. Existing Product â The Collective
The collective is a ski movie made by Red Bull which has a completely different trailer feel and look to what the other Red
Bull trailers are like. The trailer has a relaxed song over the top which stays the same beat and speed throughout the trailer
giving it the smooth transitions with the beat. This trailer has a mix of different types of skiing such as park, urban and
mountain skiing which is a nice mix during the trailer because it lets everyone be entertained as everyone will have their
own likes of skiing and how they do it. This was also one of the first trailers I have seen with a mix of female and male
skiers as it is usually just male or female for the duration trailer which could be because they want to inspire the different
genders or because the companies that are making or sponsoring the video will be made for male or female
snowboarders/skiers. What I liked about this trailer was the music choice and the different type of footage they used that
makes the trailer exciting and different to the normal mountain or park only snowboarding/skiing. They had some really
interesting shots such as the top left when they are going through pipes which is a really unique and cool following shot, I
also like how they cut most of the tricks out before they were landed which adds to the surprise and suspense for when
the full movie comes out. The music fits the trailer really well because it is very chill and easy to listen to and it had a clear
beat that they went along with for the transitions that made the trailer look smooth and nothing felt intrusive or out of
place while watching this trailer. Unlike most snowboarding/skiing trailers Red Bull didnât use much scenery footage after
the beginning which shows all the different places they were at which I liked because it focused on the athletes all
together having fun and also focuses on the actual skiing and snowboarding aspect which all trailers do but they used less
filler footage which was a nice change.
6. Research Analysis
For my existing product research I watched around 10 trailers because I wanted to see what changes and what stays the same in
each trailer so that I can add or alter ideas and put them into my own trailer. For the four that I picked to talk about I chose two
similar ones and two very unique and interesting ones which stood out for me. What I noticed most trailers had was a scenic
introduction, even if it was fast paced or slow the introduction had some type of scenery that showed where they were or just
showing off the landscape they were filming in. This happens because people will want to know where they are and also it adds
the fear and danger factor into the trailer such as in The Art Of Flight the pilot says no one ever leaves that place over the crew
filming the isolated and dangerous looking terrain which adds suspense and danger to the footage. This makes every trick and
adventure even more dangerous than a normal snowboarding trailer which is what they were going for due to the extreme film
they were trying to make. When it comes to editing in these snow trailers, it is usually quite minimal even if it doesnât look it such
as Dark Matter with the snowboarder getting turned into three, this is a pretty simple trick and I most likely will be using it in my
video because I like the way it looked in slow motion and if used in the correct footage I think it could become a really nice
looking shot. Angles and point of views are also I massive aspect of snow trailers as they make the rides, jumps and falls dramatic
and exciting for the viewer. I have noticed first person is used a lot when it comes to jumps because they usually start off with
first person and gradually go further and further with the cameras to showcase all angles and positions for some jumps. This is
used to show how dangerous some of the stuff they are doing and by constantly showing different angles and positions it can
really put into perspective of how dangerous what they are doing really is. I also like it when they edit some of the footage such
as slow motion or stopping in time because it gives people the chance to watch the surroundings and also if they are doing
something crazy such as jumping a gap which is super deep, you get the chance to fully see the depth or darkness of the gap
which adds a fear element for the viewer because they know if they mess up then it could be a really bad fall. All the directors
have their own style to the trailers and films they produce, so every trailer will always have some type of unique feature to them
which is nice to see when I try get ideas because they can be really helpful sometimes. Also the time for trailers vary but the
main time for a snow trailer is 2 minutes 30 seconds which is long enough to get the point across or just showcasing the skill of
the athletes but not long enough to bore you and want to switch it off. The only trailer I have found which I only a minute long is
my favourite one called Dark Matter this is because of the song, editing and speed the trailer goes which makes everything
perfect in my opinion.
7. Research Analysis
While doing the research for the trailers I have been looking at how successful trailers are made and also how the average
snowboarding/skiing trailer is created and its interesting contents that keeps people watching. I also have been trying to
see the different edits they use which have been very minimal and I have done some of the edits which is good because
that means I can create some of my favourite scenes in the trailers I have talked about. Music also varies a lot depending
on how you are approaching the trailer and also the vibe you want to give off to the audience, such as with Dark Matter
you get a dark and sinister vibe coming from it because the music is disorientated and the ending is a static beep which
isnât nice to listen to so you get this weird vibe throughout the trailer which is why this is my favourite trailer because of
how unique and meaningful the trailer is. Once I have decided what route to take with my trailer such as a chill and
relaxed ski trailer or something like Dark Matter which focuses on small details mixed with fast editing and distracting
music which makes you repeat the trailer cause you feel that you have missed something which you do and I had to
slowdown the trailer to see all the little details they added into such a short amount of time. I am going to use some of the
editing that was used in the Dark Matter trailed because I really liked how they added some off topic pictures in the little
speed cuts at the beginning and I am still trying to figure out if the end mountains with the stars is edited or not because
they look so cool. Luckily I have done this type of editing before because I was needed to learn it for my skateboarding
video which I edited the background of someone with a space theme that looked exactly the same as the Dark Matter
video. Another thing I am going to be trying to implement into my trailer is the transitions Dark Matter did using the
footage and music to create a really interesting transition rather than the normal cut or slide. In the Art Of Flight they used
a lot of travelling footage which I will be able to get because I did this before so having extra footage will help because I
didnât do that last time so learning from what I didnât do last time will really push and help with what I need to do for this
FMP to come out as good as it possibly can. Filler footage isnât used that much in snow trailers because they are trying to
bring the interest into the actual snowboarding/skiing element which I am going to struggle with so if I can create a good
amount of interesting filler footage without it being to intrusive or just loads of that type of footage I think it will really
help with my trailer such as in the trailer The collective, there was a good amount of skiing and also a good amount of filler
footage.

The Art Of Flight
The Art Of Flight is a well recognised and well praised snowboarding film which has a lot of positive reviews and also has had an
impact on what people film and show with snowboarding ever since this film has been released. Luckily IMDb have all the
statistics and different age, gender and country the people who have reviewed are and are from. This helps me get a detailed
analysis on who my audience could be and also I can see peoples full non filtered opinion which is perfect for me who is
beginning the journey in making a trailer for this certain topic. I am surprised by the age range who are interested in this film
because you would think it would be dominated by people around my age which it is completely the other way around. But I
know me and my mates would never leave a review whereas I know my dad would, so this could show that the older ages are
more vocal about the subject. It is also dominated by the Male gender which doesnât come to a surprise to me because I think
that female extreme sports are still not as popular as male so women wonât be as interested as the other gender which has been
around in the extreme sports for a longer time and has a bigger platform at the moment. âThe cinematography of this film is
amazing. Fantastic scenes, the distant views are brilliant, fantastic slow-motion shots. It starts with a journey of small cliffs
gradually taking you to some of the most dangerous conditions that these guys snow board inâ. This is pretty much what
everyone says and also the 2-3 star reviews say âNo disrespect to the photographers or makers of this film. And its for them I give
any stars at allâ everyone seemed to enjoy the cinematography but it was the content that the people who gave the low stars
didnât enjoy which was a vary of people just wanting snowboarding to people comparing it to a unfunny jackass because of the
stuff they did on the journey. Having seen this, I think a lot of people care about the shots used so I will focus on doing that.

Dark Matter
This film (Dark Matter) has been out since December 24 2019. So this is most likely the reason for why there is such little amount
of reviews compared to The Art Of Flight because that has been out for 9 years now. The reviews left for this film are well
detailed so that I can still gather enough information from it to make it research and also guidance for what I should add into my
trailer. Because IMDb had no reviews which I could read, I had to gather information from the voting system they use and then
the reviews on amazon. On amazon the only negative review (2 stars) was because they misunderstood what the film was about
which isnât the fault of the film so I am not going to count that as something you can learn from or try avoid because it was the
fault of the viewer. But they also said that they are only giving stars because of the cinematography which is also what happened
on The Art Of flight review which goes to show that the audience is looking at the cinematography because a lot of reviews seem
to praise the footage used but obviously you get some hardcore snowboarders that only want snowboarding which this film is
perfect for because there is no story just snowboarding. I feel that with this community that I have seen so far there is never
going to be a perfect snowboard film because some people like a story and the cinematography while you have the hardcore
snowboarders who just want epic and dangerous snowboarding tricks down a mountain so having that perfect balance is either
going to be impossible or itâs a very thin line. But because I have seen only a few people who fit into that hardcore category then
I am going to focus on what the majority enjoys so it will be good looking shots and some type of story going with the video so
that it feels like more of a trailer to a movie rather than a trailer of just a snowboarding/skiing montage which is what I am not
aiming for.

Full Moon
Because amazon doesnât give out the gender percentage and the age percentage then I will need to guess for the gender
because age canât really be worked out unless they had a profile picture or something giving away their age so I am going to have
to guess from what they said and how they said it. From the twenty six reviews left about this film I had to go through them and
try gather who was female and who was male, my only evidence was the username they had and also the type of user name
they had. So I found four female accounts with the name being shown and everyone else I think is male due to the names
already being shown to be male and also some of the accounts are called amazon or kindle user so because this sport is
dominated by men I am going to go with the norm and say that they are males as well just because the percentage would back
me up. Starting with the negative reviews first there was a massive hate towards the acting and how they presented themselves
with one person saying âwhat a waste of my time and insult my intelligenceâ and another saying âMain character is incredibly
unappealing and boring. Hard to say if she's well-acted. Plot is likewise uninterestingâ. I think that they wanted to show a bunch
of people having fun and shredding mountains but they went over the top and made the film uninteresting with how they acted
and showcased themselves which would be because they arenât actors they are athletes and it shows when you are making a
film. Other than that a lot of the viewers enjoyed the picture quality and music choice which went into the film, these were the
people who gave it 5-4 stars. From these reviews I have gathered that I should probably use less acting in my trailer because me
and my mate arenât exactly actors so I am going to use minimal acting with more scenic shots and snowboarding/skiing because
that is the safest route to take due to heavy hate about the type of acting shown in that film.
11. Secondary Research â Review summary
For my first part of secondary research I decided to look and evaluate reviews on three unique film trailers I talked about in my
existing products research at the beginning. This was because I wanted to get the most dynamic type of reviews I could because I
had a all female trailer, a trippy and edited trailer and then a mix of danger and story trailer. I feel that this secondary research
will be good for my planning and filming because I can make a plan with all the negatives and positives of the reviews and try to
make an even amount of praised and wanted stuff within my trailer. Obviously I wont be able to please everyone but having that
guidance there for me will be helpful during my time doing production because I can incorporate the missing content some
people were wanting and that will hopefully make some people who share that opinion stay interested during my trailer.
This chart is a massive help for me because it lets me know
the age and gender of the people watching and reviewing
the film so I know what type of audience I could be getting
while I create this trailer for the genre. This also saves me time doing a survey because I could go through a lot of different snow
movies and record the average of male to female and also the ages which are watching as well. So far middle aged males are the
main audience for this genre which has been proved due to the charts for multiple snow films that I have looked into.
The chart on the left is also a very useful chart to have because it tells me the percentage of people who have voted and also
their opinions and rating of the film. This is good because 1/10 can be more informative rather than 1/5 because you could have
a near perfect reaction to the film but 4-5 is a bigger gap compared to 9-10. This just allows people to really show where they
stand in the rankings for the film and also their voiced opinion can back up and show any errors they found during their time
watching the film.
12. Primary Research â Interview 1
Age?
19.
Gender?
Male.
Have you ever snowboarded or skied?
I have done both.
Do you follow the sport such as watch films or competitions?
I watch some snowboarding competitions and Iâve watched many snowboarding videos.
Would you like editing involved with the videos of the sport such as edits or trailers?
Editing with most things can be used to great effect but too much editing can take away from what you are actually watching
which is the sport.
What pace do you think a snow trailer should be going at?
I think a trailer for any sport should be at a high tempo to symbolise the high adrenaline you would get from taking part in the
sport itself.
Do you like a story involved in a snow film or just snowboarding/skiing?
A story can be nice but for me it depends on how I am feeling that day because I may not want to concentrate on a story line and
just chill out and watch them actually snowboard.
13. Primary Research â Interview 2
Age?
18.
Gender?
Male.
Have you ever snowboarded or skied?
I have snowboarded.
Do you follow the sport such as watch films or competitions?
I am on and off with watching competitions and I have seen a few films.
Would you like editing involved with the videos of the sport such as edits or trailers?
Depending on the editing choice and how it is put into the film then I think it can be good as long as it isnât over the top and
doesnât fit with the style.
What pace do you think a snow trailer should be going at?
I think it should be a fast paced trailer because that draws the attention and makes people keep watching because they donât
want to miss anything during the time it is played.
Do you like a story involved in a snow film or just snowboarding/skiing?
Too much of a story can be boring depending on how they are doing the sport such as if it is mountain snowboarding or skiing
then I would rather have just the sport but if it is a pro athlete then a story would be nice because you can see how they got to
that point.
14. Primary Research â Interview 3
Age?
17.
Gender?
Male.
Have you ever snowboarded or skied?
I ski twice a year.
Do you follow the sport such as watch films or competitions?
If I see it on the TV then I will watch it.
Would you like editing involved with the videos of the sport such as edits or trailers?
Yes I would because I like it when itâs not just raw footage as it makes it more interesting to watch.
What pace do you think a snow trailer should be going at?
I think it should go at a fast pace to match the skier or snowboarder.
Do you like a story involved in a snow film or just snowboarding/skiing?
If they add one thatâs fine but I think the actual sport is enough by itself.
15. Primary Research Summary
For my primary research I decided to interview three of my friends who I know have done the sport at some point in their life.
Luckily I managed to get a variety because one of them has only done snowboarding, one has only done skiing and the other has
done both. This could mean that they have different views on the sport and also different interests because they are coming
from different angles in the community. I tried to ask a variety of questions which fit into the category I am working in such as
asking if they enjoy a story within a film, editing and the pace. These three things is what I am going to be focusing on within the
trailer because that is what essentially constructs the actual trailer. I also asked if they follow the sport with film or actual
competitions because I wanted to know if they have any experience or knowledge on the topic because the opinion needs to
have some substance to it otherwise I am having someone influence my project with no knowledge in that area and that could
create the wrong image when I go into making the trailer. What I found out was that they all had the same opinion when it
comes to the pace of the trailer, they all wanted to see a fast paced trailer because they believe that the trailer should match the
pace of the actual skiing and snowboarding. This is probably because faster trailers are always more interesting because you canât
look away and also it matches the rush and gives you that energy boost just like if you were doing the sport in real life.
With the editing two of the people agreed and the other was more into editing than the other two. I agree with the two people
because over editing the footage can take away from what you are actually wanting to watch which is the sport and considering
itâs a snow trailer and I have seen people complain because its something other than the actual sport I donât think its worth going
against it if people enjoy it.
The last thing was about the story being involved with the film because having a story in the film means that I am going to need a
story within in the trailer to show that it wonât just be a snowboarding and skiing montage. Its different for everyone because I
think it depends on if you want to watch people shred or actually follow a story, so I am going to need to plan what I want to do
because it seems it is different for everyone because they would watch it if they wanted to but if they donât want to follow a
story they will just find a snowboarding/skiing only film.
16. Production Tutorials - Duplication
For my project I am wanting to add a little bit of editing for the trailer which
is subtle but I think it looks really nice when placed in the correct place during
the trailer. It also adds variation to the trailer because having different clips of
skiing and snowboarding is cool but have slight changes throughout the
trailer even if it is one then it just adds that variation to the trailer and makes
it a little more unique. I have done something similar to this when I was
making my music video because I wanted to make trippy edits which pulled an
image slightly to the side giving off different colours but the same image outwards. Once I find a tutorial on how to do this
technique I would imagine it could be similar to what I did before. After doing some research I have found out that it could have
been done using masking which is where you cut out the person from the clip and stick them onto the footage that you are using
which is exactly what I have done before with my skate project. This is going to take some time because I am going to need to go
through the footage a couple times and then also cut out the person perfectly frame by frame which was my biggest time
consumer on my last project. Even if I only use this technique once or twice throughout my trailer I think that will be enough
because it will add more variety in the trailer and also over using the technique could make it quite boring to look at after awhile
and also it wouldnât make the trailer have variety because I am just using the same thing over and over again. I think if I use this
correctly and with the correct timing and placing it could be a really nice change within the trailer to make it more interesting for
the viewer. The only problem that I could think of with this type of editing is the shot they used is a facing down view which is
something I donât have much of because I had no drones or vantage points which gave me the type of view they do in the top
right corner. So I am going to have to pick a good video because it could end up with a lot of wasted time if I mess up because of
how long this will take if I do it perfectly.
