Using the Computer with Windows
Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer displays the hierarchical structure of files,
folders, and drives on your computer. It also shows any network
drives that have been mapped to drive letters on your computer.
All media drives (e.g., hard disk drives, DVD-ROM, flash
memory) are displayed in Windows Explorer using a letter. Use
the Computer icon on the Desktop, or the <Start>+<E> key
combination to open Windows Explorer.
Creating a New Folder
• To create a new folder, from the File menu, select New, then
click Folder. When the folder is created, name it what you
want, then press the Enter key.
• You can also create a new folder by clicking the New Folder
button, which is located on the toolbar.
• Right-click on any empty space in a folder or desktop to create
a new folder. When the shortcut menu opens, select New,
then click Folder.
• The <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<N> key combination can also be used to
create a new folder.
Changing the Name of a File or
Folder
• To change the name of a file or folder, first select the item (file
or folder). Right-click the item, then from the shortcut menu
select Rename. Type the name, then press Enter. Note that file
names cannot contain the following characters:  / : * ? “ <>|.

Selecting Files and Folders
Selecting multiple files or folders helps you copy, move, delete,
and compress these files.
• To select non-consecutive files or folders, press and hold down
the Ctrl key, then click each item. To deselect an item, click it
again.
• To select consecutive files or folders, click the first item, press
and hold down the Shift key, then click the last item. You can
also select consecutive items using Shift and the arrow keys.

• To select all the files and folders in a window, from the Edit
menu click Select All or use the <Ctrl>+<A> key combination;
you can also click and draw a rectangle around any adjacent
files you want to select.
• To cancel a selection, click a blank area in the window.
Copying a File or a Folder
• The copy operation duplicates the file or folder. To copy any
item, click the item, then select Copy (<Ctrl>+<C>) from the
Edit menu. Next, go to the destination folder and select Paste
(<Ctrl>+<V>) from the Edit menu.
• Another way of copying an item is by dragging it from its
source folder to the destination folder while pressing and
holding down the Ctrl key.
• You can also right-click an item, select Copy from the shortcut
menu, then right-click a blank area and select Paste.
Moving a File or a Folder
• The move operation transfers files or folders to a different
location. To move any item, click the item and select Cut
(<Ctrl>+<X>) from the Edit menu or Organize button. Go to the
destination folder, then select Paste from the Edit menu
(or use the <Ctrl>+<V> key combination)
• You can also transfer files and folders by dragging them from
one folder to another.
• An alternative way of moving a file is to right-click an item
from the shortcut menu, select Cut, then right-click a blank
area and select Paste
Deleting a File or a Folder
There are two ways to delete items: send them to the Recycle
Bin or delete them permanently.
• To delete (send to the Recycle Bin) any item, right-click on it,
then select Delete from the shortcut menu.
• You can also delete a file using the File menu or Organize
button. To delete an item permanently, use the
<Shift>+<Delete> key combination.
Restoring a File or Folder from
the Recycle Bin
• To restore a deleted file from the Recycle
Bin, open the Recycle Bin and double-click
on the item you want to restore. When the
dialog box opens, click the Restore button,
then click the OK button.
• The Recycle Bin uses the memory space of
the C: drive, which means that a full
Recycle Bin may slow down your computer.
Emptying the Recycle Bin will delete the
items in it, which means that items will be
permanently deleted. To empty the Recycle
Bin, right-click its icon, then select Empty

Creating a Shortcut on the
Desktop
• A shortcut is a file that provides immediate access to a
program, folder, or file. Shortcuts appear as icons with curved
arrows on the Desktop or in a folder.
• To create a shortcut right-click an item, hover over Send to,
then select Desktop (create shortcut)
Sorting Files and Folders
• Sometimes you may have too many different types of files and
subfolders in a folder, making it a nightmare for you to find the
item that you want. Sorting files and folders may help you. You
can sort files and folders according to their names, types,
sizes, or date modified. To sort your items, right-click any
empty area in a folder, hover over the Sort By, then select the
criteria you want for Ascending or Descending order.
Grouping Files and Folders
• Grouping your items puts your files and folders in several
groups according to your criteria. After creating groups, you
can collapse or expand them by clicking little arrows located at
the top-right edges of the groups.
• To group your files and folders, right-click any empty area in a
folder. Hover over Group by in the shortcut menu, then select
any criteria you want for Ascending or Descending order.

• You can change the view of your files and subfolders in a
folder or desktop, depending which kind of view you like.

• Next, use the arrow to slide between
view options; click any view style you

• Press and hold down the CTRL key while
