TOPIC : FEATURES OF PERCEPTION
What is Perception?
 Perception is the process by which people
select , organize, interpret and respond to
information from the world around them.
 Perception may be described as a person’s
view of reality.
i. Sensory experience:
Perception is our sensory experience of
the world around us and involves both the
recognition of environmental stimuli and
actions in response to these stimuli.
ii. Subjective:
Perception is a subjective process, because
different people may look at the same event
from different angles and interpret the same
in multifarious ways.
Features :-
Often, people tend to behave on the basis of
they perceive reality to be and not necessarily
as what reality is.
iii. Filter:
Perception is a way of forming impressions
about oneself, other people and daily life
experiences. It serves like a filter through which
Information passes before it has an effect on
people.
iv. Seeing things differently:
Seeing things differently is an inevitable
Outcome of an perception. What we see may
actually differ From the truth. As rightly pointed
out by Plato, we See reality only as shadow
reflected on the rough wall of a cave.
v. Basis of human behavior:
There can be no behavior with out
perception and perception lies at the base of
every individual behavior.
vi. Unique interpretation:
Perception is a unique interpretation
of the situation, not an exact recording of it.
It is in fact, a very complex cognitive process
that yields a unique picture of the world, a
picture that may quite different from reality.
