This document provides an overview of a GIS training on exploring spatial data. 3. Arc Catalog
Data management application which is used to browse datasets
and files on one's computer, database, or other sources.
 Following kinds of information can be organized and managed:
 Geodatabases
 Raster files
 Map documents, layer files Globe documents and 3D scene documents.
 Geoprocessing toolboxes, models, and Python scripts
 Standards-based metadata for these GIS information items
 And much more
ArcCatalog organizes these contents into a TREE VIEW.
Help to search and find information items and manage them.

5. Arc Map
Application that is used to view, edit and query geospatial data,
and create maps.
 Consists of two main sections:
 A table of contents on the left and the data frame(s) which
display the map.

7. Export to Shapefile?
 *.shp – File that stores the feature geometry/coordinates.
 *.dbf – File that stores the attribute information of features .
 *.shx – File that stores the index linking geometry attributes.
 *.sbn and *.sbx = Files that store the spatial index of the features.
 *.prj = File that stores the coordinate system information.

8. Arc Toolbox
Contains Data conversion, geoprocessing and analysis tools, along
with many other tools.
Batch processing (for frequently repeated tasks) is also possible
with ArcToolbox.

9. Arc Globe
ArcGlobe literally presents a globe of the earth over which users
can navigate easily in three dimensions.
