False Eyewitness Testimony
It is easy for people that have been presented with false information to report witnessing events that
never happened. In the article Can fabricated evidence induce false eyewitness testimony? by Wade,
Green, Nash discusses the way in which fabricated evidence impact the accuracy of someone being
able to accuse a person of a crime they did not commit. The participants included 60 university
students, who were then divided into three groups of 20. Participants were told that researchers were
going to study the way in which people behave when gambling real money versus virtual money and
were told that the one with the most profit would get a cash price at the end. Participants were
instructed that they would be taking a multiple choice quiz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Phase two consisted of researchers tampering with the video and replacing the check mark with an X
on the video recording of the accomplice playing, making it seem as if she was cheating although in
reality she followed the rules. Some subjects viewed a digitally manipulated video of their partner
cheating; some were told that video evidence of the cheating exists; and others were not told anything
about the evidence. Subjects were asked to sign a statement confirming that they witnessed the
incident and that it could be used in disciplinary actions against the accomplice. The results showed
that see video subjects were three times more likely to sign the statement than Told video and Control
subjects. Wade et al concludes that visual and verbal false evidence can lead to false eyewitness
testimonies while being aware there would be consequences and penalties against the accomplice. In a

determinants of the misinformation effect the conclusion made by wade et al is

British Colonialism And British Imperialism
The empire on which the sun never sets is name familiar to all, this was the name given to the British
Empire in 1921 after a period of rapid growth and ceaseless land acquisition. With such a wide range
of power, one would think that imperialism was seen as beneficial to all involved, with the exception
of the natives whose land was slowly being destroyed. A common theme in literature around this time
was the condemnation of british imperialism. Some writers wrapped up their opinions in neat yet
artistic lines, simply hinting at their disapproval while others went out of their way to make their voice
heard and their opinion crystal clear. This style of writing, no matter how the author went about it, was
known as postcolonialism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orwell doesn t bother with winding metaphors or flowery imagery to disguise his view on
imperialism, a little more than a paragraph into Shooting an Elephant the reader is presented with
Orwell s opinion, presented in a way that leaves little room for multiple interpretations. I had already
made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out
of it the better (Orwell) The bold diction used is important because while the words evil and chucked
up very clearly state Orwell s dislike of the very cause he served, these also reveal just how strongly
he felt. Writers tend to avoid the word evil as it runs the risk of coming off as over dramatic and thus
loses its significance. Orwell simply hates British Imperialism which is a strong feeling because to
simply hate something is to hate it wholeheartedly. Orwell almost feels as if the topic is worth little
time, so he describes it exactly as he views it evil. Both Orwell and Conrad also employ the use of
syntax to get across their subtler points on British Imperialism, using rhythm to set the mood for the
reader. The first thing one might notice in Orwell s essay is the switch from long sentences explaining

Whole Foods Market
(i) Environmental Analysis External Opportunities and Threats
The demographic, economic and the socio cultural segments would be the most relevant segments to
Whole Foods Market. These segments have a direct impact on the profitability, sustainability and
survivability of Whole Foods Market, and the organic food industry. The relevance of the
demographic segment stems from the fact that the age structure, income distribution and population
size are important factors which will influence the demand for organic products. The economic
segment is relevant, as an affluent population will continue to drive and sustain demand for organic
products. The socio cultural segment is another relevant segment, where attitudes about quality of life,

Given that the organic foods industry is a rapidly flourishing one with a huge potential for profits, this
would be an attractive industry to compete in. The high entry barriers, lack of substitute products and
the huge pool of potential consumers will certainly mean an immense potential of opportunities in an
industry that has just started to grow. Whole Foods Markets is in an excellent position to capture these
opportunities and this will be explained below.
(iv) Responses to Wal Mart s foray into the organic foods industry
Focus strategy on market penetration, using existing stores situated in prime locations
Whole Foods Markets has been able to reach out to its target markets through the prime geographical
locations of its stores. By further leveraging on these locations through the offering of more
customized organic products, Whole Foods will be able to penetrate the market deeper. Given that fact
that it has established the Whole Foods Brand in affluent communities, it will be in a better position
than Wal mart to widen its target market and to reach out to potential customers.
Increasing brand awareness, appeal and loyalty though a more aggressive advertising and public
relations campaign
By increasing brand awareness and image, the reputation of Whole Foods will be enhanced. This
would be critical in reaching out to potential customers, as well as retaining current customers. As
mentioned in the case, Whole Foods does minimal

Liane Moriarty s Three Wishes
Dear Mrs. Garriott,
Lyn, Cat, and Gemma Kettle, from Liane Moriarty s Three Wishes, had a pretty bad childhood. Their
battling parents Frank and Maxine ruined everything for them. They are now divorced, after years of
conflict like Frank blowing up his ring finger at the girl s sixth birthday. Apparently, it was a symbol
of an exploding marriage. Years after the divorce, the triplets make the decision to move out. They
have always stuck together. My sisters are my best friends (p.38). The quote shows their relationship
with each other. Best friends are always there for you, but sometimes you get in fights. This, in my
opinion, sums up their whole story. After a few years having moved out, they learn things about their
relationships that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her husband, Dan, explained that he had a one night stand with a drunk girl, Angela, that he met at a
bar about a month before this topic came up. He was drunk as well, which he thought would change
her response towards this awful news, but it didn t. He remembered a lot about her her name, what
color her eyes were, and her clothes. The fact that he remembered so much about her was really
upsetting Cat. He got this off his chest when they were watching a show called Med School. During
the show Cat was calling out to the TV I d want to know. I couldn t stand not to know the truth. (p.12)
she said, which was why her husband told her everything. She was talking to a guy on the show, Pete,
who cheated on his girlfriend. Dan thought that this would be the best time, so he told her that he had
to talk to her. After she finally got that this was not a joke, she began to cry. Dan felt awful, and was
continuously telling her how much he loved her and that he didn t mean to hurt her. To the sisters this
would be known as the Cat Crisis . Cat is pretty much obsessed with finding out who this girl is and
what she is like. She sat in her car, in front of the women s house stalking her, until her sisters came to

You Are Who You Pretend To Be
I recently was introduced to a Kurt Vonnegut quote by a friend. It was mentioned only in passing and
was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in my
thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are who you
pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we might like to
think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare ourselves to
others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists independently of that
personal ideal. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of our apparent individuality, the way we act
around others, how we dress and talk, and our general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When we actively pursue our desires, we take on traits favorable to the completion of our goals. The
assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition, but they
become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged.
This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in
literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this essay at
least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some works which we
have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually unwise to look at the
main character. Although that is the main place to find character development, it wouldn t be a good
novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors.
The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever despised
Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a character who we
see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on Hester and
Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. Unless he was a peculiar individual in his life before
the story of the scarlet letter, it could be assumed that he was not previously driven by revenge. It is
understandable, then, to look at him as an individual

The answer that is yes, because the company did background checks and references and noted that
Rhonda had already been in four different altercations of assault with customers. In the broad vision
the company knew there might be a possibility of Rhonda attacking a customer since she is a
salesperson. One might assume that in order to sell a product the employee would come into contact
with the customer. Sandley knew there was a chance of an altercation but still hired and retained
Rhonda. In the case Medina v Grahams Cowboy, the court ruled in favor of damages to the plaintiff
because the bar knew of the doorman s reputation and still hired him, which made the bar negligent (
Medina v. Graham s Cowboys, Inc., 1992). This can also lead into the second part of what actions did
Sandley do once the allegations were made about their employee and if negligence would fall on the
company. If management recorded each incident and did not reprimand the employees, then that
would also be negligence on the company. The company would know what an employee did and if
there was a reprimand to the action. In the case of Rhonda, the first assault should have ended in her
termination effective immediately. For Martina, who did not have a background of violence the
company would not be considered at fault the first time. However, this goes back to how did
management handle the first assault and why would they keep her in sales. Sandley would be
personally responsible for the next two assault victims because Martina has already struck a customer
and now she is a liability that the company knows about and they would be held for negligence. The
last question revolves around was it Sandley Vacuum s intention or policy that the employees had to
follow rules about how to deal with customers and that such a policy should result in physical contact

Symbolism In Susan Glaspell s Trifles
Trifles is an amazing play filled with many subtle symbolizations of the recently widowed woman
named Mrs. Wright. The play starts when all the characters walk into the house of John Wright. The
characters are two women, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, and three men, a sheriff, county attorney and
Hale. They walk into a home to investigate the murder of Mrs. Wright s (Minnie Foster) husband who
was found strangled to death. There are many Symbolic messages that are all connected to Mrs.
Wright throughout the play. From the beginning of the play, you know that Mrs. Wright is angry and
depressed. Between a conversation with Hale, Mrs. Wright has no emotion about the death of her
husband; Hale: Can t I see John? No , she says, kind o dull like. ... Show more content on

Peters says Oh, her fruit; it did freeze (1394). She is talking about her bottle of fruit which represents

woman in that house, expected her to do everything and knew that after a while her heart would freeze
and she d stop singing. So just like the fruit froze and broke so did Mrs. Wright.
At the end of the play, Mrs. Hale finishes the play with the following statement; We call it knot it, Mr.
Henderson (County Attorney) (1401). Throughout the play the question of whether Mrs. Wright was
going to quilt it or knot it kept coming up. As the play progresses the women find clues and start to
realize that Mrs. Wright killed her husband which is why Mrs. Hale makes that statement. The men do
not realize this though as they always thought of the women s findings as

The Hiding Place vs. Night
Many outsiders strive but fail to truly comprehend the haunting incident of World War II s Holocaust.
None but survivors and witnesses succeed to sense and live the timeless pain of the event which
repossesses the core of human psyche. Elie Wiesel and Corrie Ten Boom are two of these survivors
who, through their personal accounts, allow the reader to glimpse empathy within the soul and the
heart. Elie Wiesel (1928 ), a journalist and Professor of Humanities at Boston University, is an author
of 21 books. The first of his collection, entitled Night, is a terrifying account of Wiesel s boyhood
experience as a WWII Jewish prisoner of Hitler s dominant and secretive Nazi party. At age 16 he was
taken from his home in Sighet, Romania and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important theme portrayed in Night is defined later by Wiesel himself: The executioner
killed for nothing, the victim died for nothing...During the Middle Ages, the Jews, when they chose
death, were convinced that by their sacrifice they were glorifying and sanctifying God s name. At
Auschwitz, the sacrifices were without point, without faith, without divine inspiration... (Douglas)
Wiesel feels that the genocide of WWII came and went and proves no point to the world, gives neither
strength nor hope to the individual, and is basically pointless. After the inhumane persecution, his God
is not praised by a greater audience, Hitler and his Nazi party does not gain more power, Jews are not
respected by others, and the world as a whole is not given reassurance of a better future. To Wiesel,
the Holocaust represents nothing but evil, guilt, and the decay of human morality. (Popular World
Fiction, II 35) As does Wiesel, Ten Boom preaches of the importance of learning from past mistakes
and not recycling a detrimental experience. However, the evangelist in Ten Boom preaches beyond
historical remembrance into the depths of spiritual growth. She strongly believes that the world and its
creatures are fated by God and that every experience witnessed by an individual is predestined with
the purpose of teaching a life lesson. She survives with the hope and

The Impact Of Ordinary People Essay
As people live their daily lives, they have an effect on others whether that is knowingly or
unknowingly. These effects can be positive or negative, but either way they contribute in the making
of individuals identities. People that have the advantage of having someone come into their life, and
help them form a healthy identity are quite lucky. In Ordinary People, by Judith Guest, Conrad was an
adolescent who was severely depressed until he met that person that helped him form a healthy
identity. The person who did this was his psychiatrist named Dr. Berger, and he helped Conrad
transform his identity from a confused to a confident person. Conrad s psychiatrist prevented him

I mean he wasn t telling me anything I couldn t figure out for myself. Really, the only one who can
help you is you. Well, you and God (Guest 55) . This demonstrated that Karen was unwilling to
receive help; since she had no one to lean on she decided to end her life. Conrad did not give up like
Karen did because he got the social support he needed to cope with his grief. The decision Conrad
made of continuing to see Dr. Berger was a very smart step because a lot of people like Karen give up,
but he kept trying. This helped him avoid extreme measures and was a sign that he was starting to find
his identity. Equally important, when Conrad went to Dr. Berger for support after Karen s death he
said this to Dr. Berger after they talked about it, I don t know what I would have done if I couldn t
have gotten you this morning. I feel so shaky (Guest 227). This proved that Dr. Berger did hold
Conrad back from not hurting himself, and helped him control his feelings. In short, Dr. Berger helped
Conrad avoid suicide, which then gave Conrad the chance to realize he was a stronger person than he
thought he was. With this, he found his confident identity at the end of the book, which he would not
have gotten without Dr. Berger.
Berger also helped reduce Conrad s feelings of remorse. Conrad felt a lot of guilt for attempting
suicide because he felt his mother, Beth would never forgive him. They had a very rocky relationship

Benefits Of A Flight Attendant
Working as a waitress in a bar or a restaurant, and working as a flight attendant may sound the same
but these are different types of careers. A flight attendant is a person who offers services to customers
in an aircraft. While a waitress or waiter, is a person who offers services to customers at a table in a
restaurant. Anybody can become a waitress. But to become a flight attendant, there are certain
requirements to meet up with such as; having a valid passport, a passed background checks, a one to
two years experience in service occupation. A flight attendant need to undergo training and take and
exam and can only be awarded the license upon their success. Even though being a waitress or a flight
attendant may sound the same due to some similarities in providing services to customers, and
ensuring customer s safety, certain factors make these two careers different from each other. The first
difference between these two careers is the knowledge required. Apart from serving food and drinks to
customers, a flight attendant has a lot of weeks and months of training to undergo such as; service
training, customer s safety in case of an emergency, and layout such as how to open and lock the door
of the plain. Moreover, a waitress requires training too but not as vigorous as a flight attendance. A
waitress or a waiter needs to know the various menus, how they are being prepared, and the kinds of
ingredients used in case a customer is allergic to something. A waiter or

Walking Dead Sociological
The episode I chose was Season 2, episode 10 of the Walking Dead, 18 Miles Out. In this episode,
Rick and Shane have a chat about the night Otis died. They then drive about 18 miles to a compound
and scrounge for supplies. Rick and Shane dump Randall but then he says, I went to school with
Maggie and that makes Rick decide he needs to think it over. Shane doesn t like this decision, and a
brawl happens between him and Rick. Their brawl ends, when a bunch of walkers appear and attack.
On the farm, Beth is wanting to kill herself. Andrea, Lori, and Maggie handle this in very different
ways. There are many sociological concepts apart of this episode. A big one is anomie, a lack of social
norms or normlessness. It describes the breakdown of social bonds between an individual and the
community. This can happen under unruly scenarios, resulting in fragmentation of social identity and
the rejection of self regulatory values. In this episode, Rick, Shane, and Randall had to let go of ...

Anomic suicide occurs as the result of not belonging to a specific group, or society in general. There is
such much normlessness in the post apocalyptic world that Beth feels she should kill herself. In that
world where there are really no norms governing behavior and there is a lack of morality, the amount
of anomic deaths is bound to be high. Beth was lacking social contacts and a sense of belonging. This
episode supports the material presented in this course. In the textbook we have used for this course,
deviance typically takes the place of rule breaking or lawlessness (Conley, 92). In this episode, the
survivors murder the walkers even though that is not they would usually do if the world they lived in
was normal. The textbook also supports the anomie felt in the world of the walking dead. Durkheim
says that the one of the biggest forces that leads to people committing suicide is a sense of
normlessness, or anomie (Conley,

Example Of Uncertainty Reduction Theory

Professor Dr. Fred Fitch Journal 2 Uncertainty reduction theory
Firstly, Uncertainty reduction theory was written by Charles Berger, his theory focus on the way
human predict and interact to others. His theory focused on two types of uncertainty and eight Atoms
for uncertainty. According to Charles Uncertainty reduction theory is an increased knowledge of what
kind of person another is, which provides an improved forecast of how a future interaction will turn
out. In another word mean that communication is the key to form health relationship. As human we
communicate to generally understand one another and to also reduction our uncertainty. I can apply
uncertainty reduction theory to my love life, my first day at a new school, making new friends and
meeting new people, new location, and I can also apply uncertainty reduction theory to my first job
interview, and many other situation to my life.
Charles also believe that No matter how close two people eventually become they always begin as
strangers . I can relate his theory to my personal relationship with my boyfriend. On my first date with

According To Mead Generalized Order
Generalized order is an organized community or group which an individual belongs to. These are
attitudes that one would assume is common for the whole group. Additionally, if we can assume the
attitude of the generalized other, we are capable of forming abstract values and principals regarding
freedom, equal rights, and fairness. For Mead, generalized order clearly demonstrated the relationship
between society and self. Therefore, in order to be ourselves, it is essential to become in a community
of attitudes that control the attitudes of all members. In doing so, individuals can create effective
organizations and activities. According to Mead, the language process is vital in regards to the
development of the self. The term communication

means a person you spend a lot of time with often because you are friends or because you are

here wanted to link the word to the drugs, so he or she changed the ordinary meaning of companion
and put the word into inverted commas. By doing this he or she crated ambiguity: who should the

one step further. What if we put those smiling, happy, well dressed couples down, in the drug taking
part, and instead the marginalized teenagers up? Probably it would still look odd, since the Italian
government, which acts from the white perspective, would warn people not to take drugs (but the
people portrayed do not look like druggie so bad companions to be abandoned, do they? They are still
white, well dressed, good looking people) and at the same time it would encourage the reader/receiver
to get engaged and create families, by showing multi ethnical couples. This is the shift of the meaning
that would probably be perceived, but as the image clearly shows this is not the case. The black is still
bad, the white is still good. The reader/receiver is here exposed to one of the current form of racial

The Differences between Normative and Pathological Child Behavior:
Oppositional Defiant Disorder
DEFINING OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANT DISORDER Children diagnosed with oppositional defiant
disorder, ODD, are characterized as displaying symptoms of age inappropriate recurrent pattern of
stubborn, hostile, disobedient, and defiant disorders , usually appearing prior to the child entering his
eighth year of age (Mash Wolfe, 2013). The DSM also lists impulse control disorders, substance abuse

The study compared rates of symptoms of oppositional defiant disorder between children referred to
behavior health clinics, and children who had not been referred. Symptoms studied included losing
temper, defying adult s requests, argues with adults, purposely annoys others, blames others, easily
annoyed, angry and resentful, and spiteful and vindictive (Keenan Wakschlag, 2004). Overall, the
study found that rates of oppositional defiant disorder symptoms were significantly higher in referred
than non referred preschoolers (Keenan Wakschlag, 2004). In other words, while only 4 8% of
children not believed to have oppositional defiant disorder exhibited the symptoms in question, a
significant amount of children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder, ranging from 30 73%, did
exhibit the symptoms. These numbers are strong evidence supporting the theory that oppositional
defiant disorder is, in face, a legitimate psychological disorder, and is not merely bad behavior.
COMORBIDITY
Oppositional defiant disorder, apart from being characterized by behaviors more severe than those
exhibited by children not diagnosed, is also correlated to an increased risk in several other disorders.
These disorders include impulse control disorders, substance abuse disorders, and mood and anxiety
disorders. A

Social Process Theory Paper
This paper will be discussing the three theories under the Social Process theory, Social learning theory,
Social Control theory, and the Social labeling theory. This paper will also be discussing the similarities
and differences of these theories. The Social Process theory is the view that criminality is a function of
people s interactions with various organizations, institutions, and processes in society. Social Learning
theory is the view that people learn to be aggressive by observing others acting aggressively to
achieve some goal or being rewarded for violent acts. A man by the name of Albert Bandura came up
with an experiment the studies the Social Learning theory; the experiment was called the Bobo Doll
Experiment. In the early 1960 s, Albert Bandura conducted this experiment and in this experiment, he
had children watch a video of an adult aggressively playing with toys, including a Bobo doll. This
adult hit the bobo doll, knocked it down and jumped on the doll screaming POW! AND Kick him!
After the children watched the video, they were then allowed to play with a lot of toys, including the

Social Control theory explains that everyone has the potential to become a criminal, but most people
are controlled by their bonds to society. Social Control theory was developed by Travis Hirsch in

Don John s Tragic Flaws
The definition of a tragic flaw is, a personality trait that ultimately leads to a character s own downfall.
Much Ado About Nothing clearly displays to the reader that Don John s actions coming from his
tragic flaws negatively affect him along with others around him. He is extremely jealous of the
success in Don Pedro and Claudio s lives, and is attempting to ruin Claudio and Hero s happiness in
their upcoming marriage. In the book, Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare, Don John
appears to be the character who is the most tragically flawed by being jealous and deceiving.
Don John s tragic flaw, jealousy, affects him and others around him as well. He had successfully
fulfilled his plan to ruin the wedding. The fact that he dilapidated

India s Foreign Corporate Tax Rate
Abstract
At the conclusion of this report, I will try to show whether there is a relationship between India s
Foreign Corporate Tax Rate and India s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Through my research, we
see that India s foreign corporate tax rate affects its FDI negatively. The time period we will be
looking at will be from 1997 2013, due to the limited data available. Furthermore, I will explore some
policy improvements which may increase FDI in India.
1. Background
FDI is defined as cross border investment by a resident entity in one economy with the objective of
obtaining a lasting interest in an enterprise resident in another economy. The lasting interest implies
the existence of a long term relationship between the direct investor and the enterprise and a
significant degree of influence by the direct investor on the management of the enterprise. Ownership
of at least 10% of the voting power, representing the influence by the investor, is the basic criterion
used. (OECD Factbook 2013: Economic, Environmental and Social Statistics) Foreign direct
investments were prohibited in India prior to 1991. Liberalization was introduced in 1991 which
allowed for FDI. Defense, petroleum gas, banking, airline, telecom, single brand retail, and multi
brand retail are fields investors can enter after obtaining approval. Below we see the investment caps
for each industry (EY). The title of this report is FDI by FDI , which was phrased by the new prime
minister of India, Mr.

Hannibal Barca Made The Correct Decision By Not Directly...
THESIS STATEMENT Although he was questioned and is criticized, Hannibal Barca made the
correct decision by not directly attacking the city of Rome. A commander under Hannibal, Marhabal,
was greatly mistaken when he openly attacked Hannibal s decision to refrain from attacking Rome.
PURPOSE STATEMENT Through research and analysis of historical events, it is apparent that a
direct attack on the city of Rome would have been ultimately futile, and quite possibly self
destructive. INTRODUCTION In 216 BC at the hilltop village of Cannae, in Apulia the Roman army
stood to fight Hannibal and suffered the greatest losses in a single day in Roman history. As the sun
rose the next day it shone on the bodies of the Romans who had been so cleverly trapped and
slaughtered. Not far from there, Marhabal, a cavalry commander under Hannibal, tells Hannibal that
in five days he shall dine as victor on the Capitol hill . Marhabal s prediction was not just hyperbolic,
but it was ludicrous. Not only would it have taken much longer than five days to reach and capture
Rome, but Hannibal and his army had no means to even attempt it. Hannibal understood this and when
he denied Marhabal s proposal, Marhabal responded, [y]ou know how to win a victory, but not how to
use one . Hannibal did know how to use a victory. He knew that there was no way he could capture the
city of Rome. Hannibal had neither the manpower nor the resources to enact a full scale attack or siege
on Rome, and too few

How Does Soda Affect Diet Soda
People nowadays believe that in order for them to live longer is to have a healthy lifestyle, which is a
fact. However, a lot of people seem to be doing it the wrong way. If you go to a local supermarket, you
will see products that says either low fat or diet , this is actually an advertising strategy for companies
so that people would want that particular product more and they wouldn t feel guilty consuming it.
What people don t know is that these products can actually have more bad effects than the regular
ones. Especially when it comes to carbonated drinks. DIET SODA S EFFECTS ON THE BRAIN The
fact that diet sodas could actually affect the brain is no surprise, sugary drinks itself does have certain
effects already. There is a study that was included in the medical journal called Stroke that showed a
relation between how consuming diet soda could affect having a stroke or having dementia. It turns
out that people who consumes one diet soda a day have more chances of suffering from stroke or

hard for the person to taste other drink or food. So if you choose to ditch diet sodas, you would

Essay Characterization in The Good Soldier
In The Good Soldier, Ford Maddox Ford does not fully develop any of the characters. The reader is
intended to use the narrator Dowell s disconnected and inaccurate impressions to build a more
complete version of who the characters are, as well as form a more accurate view of what actually
happens with the sad affair (Ford 9) of Dowell s pathetic life. This use of a single character s various
perceptions creates a work that follows the style of literary impressionism, which, to some extent,
should be only a series of personal impressions that culminates in the portrayal of reality as a
subjective experience (van Gunsteren 239). This very subjectivity of reality is clearly evident in
Dowell s perception of other people and events. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He also says that her heart had made him lead the life of the sedulous, strained nurse (13), constantly
needing to watch her and protect her from anything that might possibly excite her or cause damage to
her heart. While this apparently constrictive relationship could be construed as irritating, Dowell does
not seem to have any objection to the role Florence has given him, even when he later realizes that she
had faked her heart condition to manipulate him. For the most part, Florence even inspires some
degree of pity in him, and she often becomes poor dear Florence (12) in his mind. That he is capable
of pity for such a manipulative person is only explained by his oblivious nature. This particular
version of Florence shows the full extent of his lack of understanding as he attempts to explain things
to himself. It also shows the degree of his gullibility. Dowell also describes Florence as weak and
simple minded, saying that she was bright and she danced (17). This portrays Florence as an
essentially superficial person. However, this superficiality does not really say anything directly about
Florence, but illustrates what Thomas C. Moser phrases as Dowell s conviction of the
meaninglessness of existence (Moser 354). Dowell s life consists entirely of a series of dinners and
teas, none of which he sees any point in, aside for

Rhetoric Theories And Their Impact On The Pre Modern...
The History of Rhetoric Theories and Their Impact on the Pre modern Discourse Rhetoric is the art of
discourse that is aimed at improving the speakers or writers ability to motivate, persuade and inform
audience in specific situations. Rhetoric has played a central role in European tradition as a subject of
productive civil practice and formal study. Rhetoric provides heuristics for developing, discovering
and understanding arguments for particular situations. The five canons of rhetoric which were first
coded in classical Rome help a speaker to design a persuasive speech. The five canons of rhetoric are
delivery, memory, style, arrangement and invention (Blake, 2009). Alongside dialectic and grammar,
rhetoric is one of the ancient arts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Greek rhetoric was extended by certain Romanian rhetoricians such as Quintilian and Cicero.
Although the ancient classical rhetoric theory was basically concerned with oratory and to improve
public speech, it was also meant to influence writing instructions. During the roman time for example,
a process of composing a speech had evolved. The stages that were involved included discovering or
inventing, organizing or arranging the ideas and putting them into words that enticed the public or
audience. Of the ancient rhetoric, Aristotle is recognized for making a great contribution to the
rhetorical theories which have formed the basis of today s communication. Aristotle due to his
contribution became known as the Father of Speech Communication (Sloane, 2001). In his rhetoric,
Aristotle addressed the role of audience, speaker and the speech itself within the three pillars; logos,
pathos and ethos. In ethos, Aristotle shows that before delivering the message, the audience must first
accept the speaker s credibility and worthiness of delivering that message. In pathos, the message must
have the quality of persuasion that attracts the audience s emotions. This means that the speaker s
message should evoke the feelings of love, compassion, sympathy or fear. In logos, Aristotle shows
that the message should make sense and should be based on facts, evidence or statistics. Classical
rhetoric divides oratories

Surgical Wound Care Case Study
Problem 1
Wound Care
Justification
Dougherty and Lister (2011) stated that it is important to keep post surgical wound free from infection
because the healing of the wound depends on the amount of care being provided. There are potential
complications associated with infected post surgical wound, which includes wound dehiscence,
surgical site infection, and hematomas. These complications often occur within hours after surgery, so
therefore, high priority should be place on wound care for a patient who has had a resection of recto
sigmoid tumor and is left with a laparotomy wound.

and Erv Woolsey was a song about the life and sacrifice of a rodeo cowboy. This song begins with a
phone call from a cowboy on the rodeo who is always on the road. He calls home to his wife to check
in and also apologize for letting the rodeo and the life he is leading, take precedent over their
relationship. During the phone call, the cowboy guarantees her that he is coming home, but a tone in
her voice alerts him that something is wrong. The chorus talks about how the woman is fed up with
the life he has left her with and that she has decided to leave him for another man. As much as that
pains the cowboy, he still decides to pursue his true passion, the rodeo. Even though he second
guesses himself about his decision, he still feels that his love of the rodeo will mend his heart.
Cheyenne is the most significant rodeo around. Without telling her, he was going to skip Cheyenne to
come back to her, even though that would be the biggest sacrifice a cowboy could ever make. I Can

huge success for George. According tocountryweekly.com, Check Yes or No started because Dana

Many of life s experience colour the way we look at ourselves and society in which we live. The novel
Montana 1948 by Larry Watson is indeed all about the tragic event of David Hayden s twelfth
summer, which irrevocably changed him. These events help us understand the idea of coming of age
and how childhood experiences change us and affect how we define ourselves as adults.
Montana 1948 is set in a small country town in Mercer County, Montana called Bentrock. The story is
about a young boy David Hayden who couldn t be happier.✔ But one afternoon when David
eavesdropped on his parents, his life changed forever. He tells us in the prologue that, From the

text.
As at the beginning David was a young boy who is like any other kid in 1948. He likes to play outside
with his friends, ride horses, he preferred the wilderness of the country compared to the rules enforced
by people in town. He doesn t have a care in the world as any twelve year old should.
He thought that he had more status with his parents than he did but finds out that his Uncle molested
Indian girls and possibly his beloved Marie. He wanted to be included in the events that was going on
around him. He wanted to know what the adults were talking about. Every single detail. I think that
kids like David want to know what is happening and I think its quite a bad idea because they pick up
things they probably shouldn t and as they grow older they find out that it isn t actually a good idea.
So David eavesdrops on the conversation and he wants to know what s happening. He wants to have
adult status within his parents But the one time he did listen to what his parents were talking about
even though he wasn t supposed to know changed him for ever. He says, I would never have heard the

Cisneros Representation Of Identity Formation Of...
Literature is a vehicle for personal growth that can produce learning, ethnic validation, and empathy,
which encourages solidarity among different communities (Vasquez 2005). Despite the growing
amount of research on migration, few studies focus on their sociocultural wealth and creative
production of migrants (Simich et al 2009; Litwick 2010; Chavez 2013). Conscious of this trend, I
study the representation of identity formation of migrants in both fictional and nonfictional works as
represented by two Latinas and transnational authors, whose identities are deeply rooted in the story of
migration between Mexico and the U.S. In addition, Humanities has traditionally studied immigrants
identities from the concept of assimilation, when assimilation does not reflect the diversity and
complexities of migrant groups. To reach a more comprehensive understanding of the subjectivity of
migrants identities of and of their identity formation, I applied the anthropological theoretical
framework of liminality.

Feminism in Anthem Essay
Feminism in Anthem Throughout history, women have been brushed aside as the inferiors of men.
From the time of the Greeks to the modern day world, men have been the dominant beings. Mary
Astell, an English feminist writer, says, If all men are born free, how is it that all women are born
slaves? She questions the societal norm of women in predetermined constrictive roles. This theme of a
submissive and obedient female pervades many literary works, specifically those by Ayn Rand. Rand s
portrayal of women in her novel Anthem further drives the female into a position of inferiority.
The descriptions and labels applied to Liberty are Rand s way of demonstrating man s dominance over
women. A person s name is their identity. When someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If danger threatens you we shall face it also. If it be death, we shall die with you... Do as you please
with us, but do not send us away from you (82 83). Liberty helplessly follows Equality into the forest
and pledges her obedience through life and death to him. She begs to never be sent away, as if she
cannot survive without him. In this passage, Rand emphasizes that the highest priority of a woman s
life is to support and follow a man. Rand s view on women s responsibilities to society are evident in
her construction of the society within Anthem. In the government, women are a minority. There were
five members of the Council, three of the male gender and two of the female (25 26). Because there
are fewer women, Rand sends the message that their opinions do not have as much value or
importance as mens . In a male dominant society, everything becomes just that: male dominant. The
imbalance in government represents an imbalance in rights and opportunities for women, and
ultimately takes away their voice. Women s voices are suppressed because they have nothing
important to say, they are not important enough to be heard, and they cannot be heard because they are
not allowed to have a voice. The novel Anthem illustrates women in an inferior light, demeaning their
importance and value to the world. Ayn Rand creates woman as a creature to lick the dust from the
soles of man s feet, and to endure anything he

Social Construction Of Gender By Lorber
Although still problematic, gender roles constructed by society and cultures have progressed
throughout the years, not as much as hoped but in small ways. The social and cultural construction of
gender in definition means the construction of gender roles created by others that determine their
behaviors and develop standards based on their sex. In the article Social Construction of Gender by
Lorber the author demonstrates the social and cultural construction of gender stating, Yet in Western
societies, we see two discrete sexes and two distinguishable genders because our society is built on
two classes of people, women and men . Once the gender category is given the attributes of the person
are also gendered.... (Lorber, 11). In the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It could be seen in many perspectives how the social and cultural construction of gender are being
developed. Women and men are often being told what they should or shouldn t do. Being molded into
something society wants and favors. It s all developed through interactions with the media, in school,
with family, whether it s direct or not, it creates a huge impact on women. In the reading, it states For
men in Western societies, physical competence is an important marker of masculinity (Lorber, 12 ).
This goes to show how in different cultural settings there are expectations that mark the gender you
identify with. Culture makes a huge impact on the way a person looks or speaks. Being a strong
person could be known as attractive in a certain era or area of the world, however, being extremely
pale could be an attractive feature to have. This process interestingly affects the person and makes
them do exactly what society wants them to do. Whether it s an unconscious or a conscious decision.
Piercy, although, uses the actions of the tree being cut and shaped into what the gardener in the story
wants it to be. She demonstrates a perfect example of how women could easily be shaped and

Similarities In American History X
The movie American History X truly shows how racism upon race, class and gender was really
effected the world. The movie was based upon the Vineyard family who seemed like they had a lot
going on in their lives. The two main characters were two Caucasian males by the names of Derek and
Danny.
Derek and Danny have different strengths and weaknesses throughout their relationship as brothers.
They both clearly care for each other, but they do annoy each other throughout the movie. Danny
looks up to his older brother, even though he was headed down the wrong path. Although they have
their similarities, they also have their differences. The biggest similarities between to two is their
hatred for certain races and ethnicity. The two both show so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Danny completed the task, and that s a huge reason Derek became so widely known. After David was
released from prison the first time, he was out to take his anger out on the illegal immigrants that were
working in the supermarket. Eventually Derek realized his life was headed down the wrong road, and
he was a bad influence for his younger brother, he was on a mission to get his life back on track.
Derek was highly respected by all of the other Caucasian people in Venice. He made the decision that
he wanted to leave Venice for his families sake, but when he told the people in his town, he became
known as a Ni**** lover. Derek shows his hatred towards African American people by permanently
putting signs on his body. He shows so much hatred towards black people because his father was
killed by a African American. On his right arm, he has a tattoo that says white power. This shows how
race effects the way society was during the time this film took place. A major scene in American
History X when race and ethnicity was discouraged upon was when Danny was being recorded by
Seth. Danny said I hate the fact that it s cool to be black these days. He also added I hate this hip hop

Non Verbal And Interpersonal Communication
Non Verbal and Interpersonal Communication
Introduction
Humans are very intelligent beings. We say one thing and mean another, most of the times at least.
While having a conversation, it is important that we asses, analyze and then respond to have a
meaningful conversation. This is true more so in the case where we are interacting with a lot of cross
cultural people.
Non verbal communication is nothing but body language in generic and facial expressions, postures,
gestures and interpersonal space in specific, to name a few.
Facial Expressions
Facial expressions are a part of non verbal communication. People can recognize other persons
emotions by reading facial expressions. In recent work, researchers define 21 distinct emotion ... Show

Eye contact is looking into people s eyes with mouth curve up and brows relaxed, while staring at
people is looking at people with brows wrinkled and lips tight. In fact, staring at people reveals the
signal of hatred that you never want to bring coworkers and customers. In addition, smile with apples
of the cheeks states truly delight. However, smiling while frowning is more or less fake and it exhibits
the feeling of being embarrassed. While talking with customer or answering their questions, a person
picks up ears and turns head to one side a little bit implies he or she is patiently listening and serious
about the conversation. Plus, as a professional staff, he or she doesn t want to be indifferent to
customers and thus snorting and crinkling nose up with mouth curve down are definitely forbidden in
business talks.
Finally, conversations between friends and families are more casual. In this case, people are relaxed.
They may not keep eye contact all the time but they prefer to use their multi facial expressions to
express plentiful emotions. For instance, smile, laugh and grin are three popular expressions in casual
conversation, they look like the same but they do vary. The corners of mouth curve up present a smile.
The mouth is opened a bit more and the voice is then heard, which shows a laugh. Smiling broadly
and showing teeth brings a grin. Facial expressions are a crucial part of interpersonal communication,
for it conveys various

Commemorative speech on Michael Jackson Essay
Commemorative speech about Michael Jackson
My Favorite idol
Special person, one of the greatest contributor to American pop music industry.
Influenced billions of people worldwide with his many self composed songs and dance moves
Famously known to have changed his skin colour
Won total of 13 Grammy awards (8 in one night during the 1984 Grammy award ceremony which
earned him an entry in the Guisness world record )
A controversial figure. But let s just focus on his achievements and his humanitarian efforts.
Make a guess?
1. As a musician remarkable vocalist

As a dancer
Concurrent with his singing career, Michael also trademarked some his unique dance moves
accompanied by some of his songs like Billie Jeans and Ghosts . Though I am not a dancer, I am
absolutely awed by his dance moves such as the moonwalk, circle slide, the pelvic thrust and the spin,
all of which serves as a trademark icon to him. No doubt, many dancers all over the world had been
greatly inspired by Michael as with the many singers and musicians.
E.g. Moonwalk, Circle slide, Pelvic Thrust, The Spin
3. As a Humanitarian
No doubt as a well accomplished entertainer, however, Michael s effort as a humanitarian seems to be
relatively unknown to the public at large. His contribution and efforts in supporting good causes
earned him Guisness world record for the most charity supported by a pop singer.
Some of these efforts include
Setting up the Heal the World Foundation which aims at providing medicine for children and fighting
world hunger, drug and alcohol abuse, and child abuse
Michael supported the efforts of the NAACP, to fight prejudice against black artists.
Raised $3.3 million dollars during Michael Jackson and Friends concerts in Korea and Germany for
the humanitarian agencies UNESCO , Nelson Mandela s Children s Fund and the International
Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies .
Conclusion

Is There A Breach Of Contract Between Both Parties,...
1. Is there a breach of contract between both parties, especially if revoked? A contract is very clear and
concise, regarding its components and requirements. Hence, it includes an offer, acceptance (by both
parties), and consideration. There was an intent by Jenny to buy the car, I am interested in buying your
car , followed by consideration which shows a reliance on the owner selling it for $23,000. The
offeree allegedly agreed to this offer by his performance for the promise made, I will take the car off
Sometree. I am really excited for you to buy this car , eventhough Jenny was only interested . Thus, a
clear miscommunication in words is present, not resulting in a binding contract in which Jenny is
bound by. This assures that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The dialogue between the parties suggests its conditional nature; the fulfilment of said conditions
would lead to a binding contract. The nature of a conditional offer is also evident in the Financings
Ltd v Stimpson 1962 case, where the Defendant in the case, refused to pay charges against the
appellant. Consequently, the plaintiff sued him for breach of purchase agreement. It was held that the
Defendants offer was subject to the agreement, that the condition of the car should continue in its
undamaged state and that the failure of the condition would deem the contract non binding. Hence,
this case relates with Jenny s circumstances, in which there is a breach of conditional contract, which
should be legally rectified. It is also apparent that the decision of revocation is apparent from one of
the parties. Thus, revocation is legal and effective only when it has been communicated to the offeree.
Henceforth, the issue is that the owner of the car has not effectively communicated this to the other
party, only until after both parties accepted the offer. Therefore, the owner of the red sports car does
not have grounds for revocation. Similarly, this was upheld in the Stephenson Jaques Co. v McLean
(1880) case. The judges decided that McLean was authorised to revoke the offer before Monday
concluded, which was not effective until it reached the plaintiffs, Lush J charged the defendant the
amount of £1900, which was to be paid to the plaintiff s .

Imagination In The Mark On The Wall, By W. B. Yeats
After losing considerably in the war, people had to begin to decide for themselves what was important.
Their identity had been marred by reality and the only way to fix this was to shed their old priorities
and construct new ones. Among these priorities were: creativity, originality, and possibility.
Imagination is simple because one can access it from anywhere. For this reason, authors utilize it
often. This is evident in Virginia Woolf s, The Mark on the Wall and W. B. Yeats s, Sailing to
Byzantium. Woolf s narrator claims, I can think sitting still as well as standing up which is only made
possible by imagination (Woolf 2148). Similarly, Critics writing on [Yeats s] poem have perceived
Byzantium as, variously, a representation of the imagination, the imaginative act, the soul, the vision,
and Unity of Being (Pruitt 225). Of course this Byzantium Yeats references is only one in the mind
slightly based off of memory. This corresponds with Woolf s work and how she uses memory as a
beginning point and, therefore...in remembering the event the narrator is transported back to the scene
so that it seems to her to be happening in the present, or happening over and over (Cyr 199). Likewise,
in Sailing to Byzantium the reader is invited, to contemplate such an ideal location, projecting it over
the past, present, and what is to come as if it too, is out of the reach of time because it is constantly
occurring in the imagination (Tucker 68). Also using imagination,

Benefits And Backlashes Of High Stakes Testing
The Benefits and Backlashes of High Stakes Testing
What if the determining factor of whether or not you would be successful or a failure in life was solely
based on the results of one test. Regardless of all the progress you have accomplished over your life, it
all comes down to this big moment, the big test! That is the reality many students face annually due to
high stakes testing. High stakes testing is the use of a summative test or an assessment to make
decisions that are of prominent educational, financial, or social impact (Kubiszyn Borich, 2013).
Decisions such as graduation/grade promotion, school/state funding, or even job placement or
termination.
Many critics of high stakes testing believe that these test cause teachers to teach to the test. Pedulla,
Abrams, Madaus, Russell, Ramos, and Miao (as cited in Madaus Russell, 2010) found in a national
survey that 80 percent of teachers admitted to increasing time spent on subjects that are tested on.
These critics also believe that test scores increase as a result of placing sole focus on the test and
revolving curriculum and instruction around the specific high stakes test of that school. I do not agree
completely agree with the statement that test scores increase as a result of teachers teaching to the test.
It is unfair to say that since the vast majority of teachers are teaching to the test, that all other teachers
are also doing the same. Sometimes increased test scores are a direct result of the hard work of

  • 2. False Eyewitness Testimony It is easy for people that have been presented with false information to report witnessing events that never happened. In the article Can fabricated evidence induce false eyewitness testimony? by Wade, Green, Nash discusses the way in which fabricated evidence impact the accuracy of someone being able to accuse a person of a crime they did not commit. The participants included 60 university students, who were then divided into three groups of 20. Participants were told that researchers were going to study the way in which people behave when gambling real money versus virtual money and were told that the one with the most profit would get a cash price at the end. Participants were instructed that they would be taking a multiple choice quiz ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Phase two consisted of researchers tampering with the video and replacing the check mark with an X on the video recording of the accomplice playing, making it seem as if she was cheating although in reality she followed the rules. Some subjects viewed a digitally manipulated video of their partner cheating; some were told that video evidence of the cheating exists; and others were not told anything about the evidence. Subjects were asked to sign a statement confirming that they witnessed the incident and that it could be used in disciplinary actions against the accomplice. The results showed that see video subjects were three times more likely to sign the statement than Told video and Control subjects. Wade et al concludes that visual and verbal false evidence can lead to false eyewitness testimonies while being aware there would be consequences and penalties against the accomplice. • 4. British Colonialism And British Imperialism The empire on which the sun never sets is name familiar to all, this was the name given to the British Empire in 1921 after a period of rapid growth and ceaseless land acquisition. With such a wide range of power, one would think that imperialism was seen as beneficial to all involved, with the exception of the natives whose land was slowly being destroyed. A common theme in literature around this time was the condemnation of british imperialism. Some writers wrapped up their opinions in neat yet artistic lines, simply hinting at their disapproval while others went out of their way to make their voice heard and their opinion crystal clear. This style of writing, no matter how the author went about it, was known as postcolonialism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Orwell doesn t bother with winding metaphors or flowery imagery to disguise his view on imperialism, a little more than a paragraph into Shooting an Elephant the reader is presented with Orwell s opinion, presented in a way that leaves little room for multiple interpretations. I had already made up my mind that imperialism was an evil thing and the sooner I chucked up my job and got out of it the better (Orwell) The bold diction used is important because while the words evil and chucked up very clearly state Orwell s dislike of the very cause he served, these also reveal just how strongly he felt. Writers tend to avoid the word evil as it runs the risk of coming off as over dramatic and thus loses its significance. Orwell simply hates British Imperialism which is a strong feeling because to simply hate something is to hate it wholeheartedly. Orwell almost feels as if the topic is worth little time, so he describes it exactly as he views it evil. Both Orwell and Conrad also employ the use of syntax to get across their subtler points on British Imperialism, using rhythm to set the mood for the reader. The first thing one might notice in Orwell s essay is the switch from long sentences explaining his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Whole Foods Market (i) Environmental Analysis External Opportunities and Threats The demographic, economic and the socio cultural segments would be the most relevant segments to Whole Foods Market. These segments have a direct impact on the profitability, sustainability and survivability of Whole Foods Market, and the organic food industry. The relevance of the demographic segment stems from the fact that the age structure, income distribution and population size are important factors which will influence the demand for organic products. The economic segment is relevant, as an affluent population will continue to drive and sustain demand for organic products. The socio cultural segment is another relevant segment, where attitudes about quality of life, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Given that the organic foods industry is a rapidly flourishing one with a huge potential for profits, this would be an attractive industry to compete in. The high entry barriers, lack of substitute products and the huge pool of potential consumers will certainly mean an immense potential of opportunities in an industry that has just started to grow. Whole Foods Markets is in an excellent position to capture these opportunities and this will be explained below. (iv) Responses to Wal Mart s foray into the organic foods industry Focus strategy on market penetration, using existing stores situated in prime locations Whole Foods Markets has been able to reach out to its target markets through the prime geographical locations of its stores. By further leveraging on these locations through the offering of more customized organic products, Whole Foods will be able to penetrate the market deeper. Given that fact that it has established the Whole Foods Brand in affluent communities, it will be in a better position than Wal mart to widen its target market and to reach out to potential customers. Increasing brand awareness, appeal and loyalty though a more aggressive advertising and public relations campaign By increasing brand awareness and image, the reputation of Whole Foods will be enhanced. This would be critical in reaching out to potential customers, as well as retaining current customers. As mentioned in the case, Whole Foods does minimal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their battling parents Frank and Maxine ruined everything for them. They are now divorced, after years of conflict like Frank blowing up his ring finger at the girl s sixth birthday. Apparently, it was a symbol of an exploding marriage. Years after the divorce, the triplets make the decision to move out. They have always stuck together. My sisters are my best friends (p.38). The fact that he remembered so much about her was really upsetting Cat. He got this off his chest when they were watching a show called Med School. • 7. You Are Who You Pretend To Be I recently was introduced to a Kurt Vonnegut quote by a friend. It was mentioned only in passing and was likely meant only to carry the conversation on, but I have come back to it many times in my thoughts. The quotation was a warning: Be careful who you pretend to be because you are who you pretend to be . The truth behind this sentiment is far more pertinent to our lives than we might like to think. We all have visions of who we are based on what we know, how we compare ourselves to others, and how we attempt to act, but the actuality of who we are exists independently of that personal ideal. The truth of the matter is that, regardless of our apparent individuality, the way we act around others, how we dress and talk, and our general ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When we actively pursue our desires, we take on traits favorable to the completion of our goals. The assimilation of those traits into our personality may be little more than a result of repetition, but they become a basis upon which our identity might change or, more consequentially, be judged. This idea of the formulation of identity is not unfounded, and, although not overtly present in literature, can be witnessed in certain characters just as in the real world. In order to keep this essay at least somewhat on topic with the class, I would like to relate this idea to at least some works which we have read. To observe such formulations of identity in literature, it is usually unwise to look at the main character. Although that is the main place to find character development, it wouldn t be a good novel if the character were to constantly change his ideas and behaviors. The first character who I believe shows just how this idea of identity holds true is the ever despised Arthur Chillingworth. The very nature of his character is action. Though he is not a character who we see as active physically in obtaining his goals, without his drive for revenge on Hester and Dimmesdale he would not be noteworthy at all. Unless he was a peculiar individual in his life before the story of the scarlet letter, it could be assumed that he was not previously driven by revenge. It is understandable, then, to look at him as an individual ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The answer that is yes, because the company did background checks and references and noted that Rhonda had already been in four different altercations of assault with customers. In the broad vision the company knew there might be a possibility of Rhonda attacking a customer since she is a salesperson. One might assume that in order to sell a product the employee would come into contact with the customer. Sandley knew there was a chance of an altercation but still hired and retained Rhonda. In the case Medina v Grahams Cowboy, the court ruled in favor of damages to the plaintiff because the bar knew of the doorman s reputation and still hired him, which made the bar negligent ( Medina v. Graham s Cowboys, Inc., 1992). This can also lead into the second part of what actions did Sandley do once the allegations were made about their employee and if negligence would fall on the company. If management recorded each incident and did not reprimand the employees, then that would also be negligence on the company. The company would know what an employee did and if there was a reprimand to the action. In the case of Rhonda, the first assault should have ended in her termination effective immediately. For Martina, who did not have a background of violence the company would not be considered at fault the first time. However, this goes back to how did management handle the first assault and why would they keep her in sales. Sandley would be personally responsible for the next two assault victims because Martina has already struck a customer and now she is a liability that the company knows about and they would be held for negligence. The last question revolves around was it Sandley Vacuum s intention or policy that the employees had to follow rules about how to deal with customers and that such a policy should result in physical contact by ... They walk into a home to investigate the murder of Mrs. Wright s (Minnie Foster) husband who was found strangled to death. None but survivors and witnesses succeed to sense and live the timeless pain of the event which repossesses the core of human psyche. Elie Wiesel and Corrie Ten Boom are two of these survivors who, through their personal accounts, allow the reader to glimpse empathy within the soul and the heart. Elie Wiesel (1928 ), a journalist and Professor of Humanities at Boston University, is an author of 21 books. At Auschwitz, the sacrifices were without point, without faith, without divine inspiration... (Douglas) Wiesel feels that the genocide of WWII came and went and proves no point to the world, gives neither strength nor hope to the individual, and is basically pointless. After the inhumane persecution, his God is not praised by a greater audience, Hitler and his Nazi party does not gain more power, Jews are not respected by others, and the world as a whole is not given reassurance of a better future. To Wiesel, the Holocaust represents nothing but evil, guilt, and the decay of human morality. (Popular World Fiction, II 35) As does Wiesel, Ten Boom preaches of the importance of learning from past mistakes and not recycling a detrimental experience. However, the evangelist in Ten Boom preaches beyond historical remembrance into the depths of spiritual growth. She strongly believes that the world and its creatures are fated by God and that every experience witnessed by an individual is predestined with the purpose of teaching a life lesson. These effects can be positive or negative, but either way they contribute in the making of individuals identities. People that have the advantage of having someone come into their life, and help them form a healthy identity are quite lucky. In Ordinary People, by Judith Guest, Conrad was an adolescent who was severely depressed until he met that person that helped him form a healthy identity. I mean he wasn t telling me anything I couldn t figure out for myself. Really, the only one who can help you is you. Well, you and God (Guest 55) . This demonstrated that Karen was unwilling to receive help; since she had no one to lean on she decided to end her life. Conrad did not give up like Karen did because he got the social support he needed to cope with his grief. The decision Conrad made of continuing to see Dr. Berger was a very smart step because a lot of people like Karen give up, but he kept trying. This helped him avoid extreme measures and was a sign that he was starting to find his identity. Equally important, when Conrad went to Dr. Berger for support after Karen s death he said this to Dr. Berger after they talked about it, I don t know what I would have done if I couldn t have gotten you this morning. I feel so shaky (Guest 227). This proved that Dr. Berger did hold Conrad back from not hurting himself, and helped him control his feelings. In short, Dr. Berger helped Conrad avoid suicide, which then gave Conrad the chance to realize he was a stronger person than he thought he was. With this, he found his confident identity at the end of the book, which he would not have gotten without Dr. Berger. Berger also helped reduce Conrad s feelings of remorse. They then drive about 18 miles to a compound and scrounge for supplies. Rick and Shane dump Randall but then he says, I went to school with Maggie and that makes Rick decide he needs to think it over. Shane doesn t like this decision, and a brawl happens between him and Rick. Their brawl ends, when a bunch of walkers appear and attack. On the farm, Beth is wanting to kill herself. Andrea, Lori, and Maggie handle this in very different ways. There are many sociological concepts apart of this episode. A big one is anomie, a lack of social norms or normlessness. It describes the breakdown of social bonds between an individual and the community. This can happen under unruly scenarios, resulting in fragmentation of social identity and the rejection of self regulatory values. In this episode, Rick, Shane, and Randall had to let go of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anomic suicide occurs as the result of not belonging to a specific group, or society in general. Beth was lacking social contacts and a sense of belonging. This episode supports the material presented in this course. In the textbook we have used for this course, deviance typically takes the place of rule breaking or lawlessness (Conley, 92). In this episode, the survivors murder the walkers even though that is not they would usually do if the world they lived in was normal. The textbook also supports the anomie felt in the world of the walking dead. Durkheim says that the one of the biggest forces that leads to people committing suicide is a sense of normlessness, or anomie (Conley, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What if we put those smiling, happy, well dressed couples down, in the drug taking part, and instead the marginalized teenagers up? Probably it would still look odd, since the Italian government, which acts from the white perspective, would warn people not to take drugs (but the people portrayed do not look like druggie so bad companions to be abandoned, do they? They are still white, well dressed, good looking people) and at the same time it would encourage the reader/receiver to get engaged and create families, by showing multi ethnical couples. Symptoms studied included losing temper, defying adult s requests, argues with adults, purposely annoys others, blames others, easily annoyed, angry and resentful, and spiteful and vindictive (Keenan Wakschlag, 2004). Overall, the study found that rates of oppositional defiant disorder symptoms were significantly higher in referred than non referred preschoolers (Keenan Wakschlag, 2004). In other words, while only 4 8% of children not believed to have oppositional defiant disorder exhibited the symptoms in question, a significant amount of children diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder, ranging from 30 73%, did exhibit the symptoms. These numbers are strong evidence supporting the theory that oppositional defiant disorder is, in face, a legitimate psychological disorder, and is not merely bad behavior. This paper will also be discussing the similarities and differences of these theories. The Social Process theory is the view that criminality is a function of people s interactions with various organizations, institutions, and processes in society. Social Learning theory is the view that people learn to be aggressive by observing others acting aggressively to achieve some goal or being rewarded for violent acts. • 22. India s Foreign Corporate Tax Rate Abstract At the conclusion of this report, I will try to show whether there is a relationship between India s Foreign Corporate Tax Rate and India s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Through my research, we see that India s foreign corporate tax rate affects its FDI negatively. The time period we will be looking at will be from 1997 2013, due to the limited data available. Furthermore, I will explore some policy improvements which may increase FDI in India. 1. Background FDI is defined as cross border investment by a resident entity in one economy with the objective of obtaining a lasting interest in an enterprise resident in another economy. The lasting interest implies the existence of a long term relationship between the direct investor and the enterprise and a significant degree of influence by the direct investor on the management of the enterprise. Ownership of at least 10% of the voting power, representing the influence by the investor, is the basic criterion used. (OECD Factbook 2013: Economic, Environmental and Social Statistics) Foreign direct investments were prohibited in India prior to 1991. Liberalization was introduced in 1991 which allowed for FDI. Defense, petroleum gas, banking, airline, telecom, single brand retail, and multi brand retail are fields investors can enter after obtaining approval. THESIS STATEMENT Although he was questioned and is criticized, Hannibal Barca made the correct decision by not directly attacking the city of Rome. A commander under Hannibal, Marhabal, was greatly mistaken when he openly attacked Hannibal s decision to refrain from attacking Rome. PURPOSE STATEMENT Through research and analysis of historical events, it is apparent that a direct attack on the city of Rome would have been ultimately futile, and quite possibly self destructive. INTRODUCTION In 216 BC at the hilltop village of Cannae, in Apulia the Roman army stood to fight Hannibal and suffered the greatest losses in a single day in Roman history. As the sun rose the next day it shone on the bodies of the Romans who had been so cleverly trapped and slaughtered. Not far from there, Marhabal, a cavalry commander under Hannibal, tells Hannibal that in five days he shall dine as victor on the Capitol hill . Marhabal s prediction was not just hyperbolic, but it was ludicrous. Not only would it have taken much longer than five days to reach and capture Rome, but Hannibal and his army had no means to even attempt it. Hannibal understood this and when he denied Marhabal s proposal, Marhabal responded, [y]ou know how to win a victory, but not how to use one . Hannibal did know how to use a victory. He knew that there was no way he could capture the city of Rome. Hannibal had neither the manpower nor the resources to enact a full scale attack or siege on Rome, and too few ... The reader is intended to use the narrator Dowell s disconnected and inaccurate impressions to build a more complete version of who the characters are, as well as form a more accurate view of what actually happens with the sad affair (Ford 9) of Dowell s pathetic life. This use of a single character s various perceptions creates a work that follows the style of literary impressionism, which, to some extent, should be only a series of personal impressions that culminates in the portrayal of reality as a subjective experience (van Gunsteren 239). For the most part, Florence even inspires some degree of pity in him, and she often becomes poor dear Florence (12) in his mind. That he is capable of pity for such a manipulative person is only explained by his oblivious nature. This particular version of Florence shows the full extent of his lack of understanding as he attempts to explain things to himself. It also shows the degree of his gullibility. Dowell also describes Florence as weak and simple minded, saying that she was bright and she danced (17). This portrays Florence as an essentially superficial person. However, this superficiality does not really say anything directly about Florence, but illustrates what Thomas C. Moser phrases as Dowell s conviction of the meaninglessness of existence (Moser 354). The stages that were involved included discovering or inventing, organizing or arranging the ideas and putting them into words that enticed the public or audience. Of the ancient rhetoric, Aristotle is recognized for making a great contribution to the rhetorical theories which have formed the basis of today s communication. In pathos, the message must have the quality of persuasion that attracts the audience s emotions. Rand s portrayal of women in her novel Anthem further drives the female into a position of inferiority. The descriptions and labels applied to Liberty are Rand s way of demonstrating man s dominance over women. A person s name is their identity. When someone ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If danger threatens you we shall face it also. If it be death, we shall die with you... Do as you please with us, but do not send us away from you (82 83). Liberty helplessly follows Equality into the forest and pledges her obedience through life and death to him. She begs to never be sent away, as if she cannot survive without him. In this passage, Rand emphasizes that the highest priority of a woman s life is to support and follow a man. Rand s view on women s responsibilities to society are evident in her construction of the society within Anthem. In the government, women are a minority. There were five members of the Council, three of the male gender and two of the female (25 26). Because there are fewer women, Rand sends the message that their opinions do not have as much value or importance as mens . In a male dominant society, everything becomes just that: male dominant. The imbalance in government represents an imbalance in rights and opportunities for women, and ultimately takes away their voice. Women s voices are suppressed because they have nothing important to say, they are not important enough to be heard, and they cannot be heard because they are not allowed to have a voice. The novel Anthem illustrates women in an inferior light, demeaning their importance and value to the world. Ayn Rand creates woman as a creature to lick the dust from the soles of man s feet, and to endure anything he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sugarcane ( Saccharum Spp ) Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), a C4 photosynthetic plant, is a perennial grass that is cultivated in tropical, and subtropical regions of the world for its ability to store high concentrations of sucrose in the stem. Recently it is also gaining importance as an efficient feedstock for lignocellulosic ethanol in converting energy from sunlight into chemical energy that is usable as a biofuel source. Recognition of sugarcane as an important energy crop was recently heightened by the advent of large scale sugarcane based ethanol production in Brazil. The strong association of lignin with cellulose and hemi cellulose blocks the access of cell wall degrading enzymes like cellulases to cellulose and hemicellulose during saccharification. Social Construction Of Gender By Lorber Although still problematic, gender roles constructed by society and cultures have progressed throughout the years, not as much as hoped but in small ways. The social and cultural construction of gender in definition means the construction of gender roles created by others that determine their behaviors and develop standards based on their sex. In the article Social Construction of Gender by Lorber the author demonstrates the social and cultural construction of gender stating, Yet in Western societies, we see two discrete sexes and two distinguishable genders because our society is built on two classes of people, women and men . Once the gender category is given the attributes of the person are also gendered.... (Lorber, 11). In the poem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the reading, it states For men in Western societies, physical competence is an important marker of masculinity (Lorber, 12 ). This goes to show how in different cultural settings there are expectations that mark the gender you identify with. Culture makes a huge impact on the way a person looks or speaks. Being a strong person could be known as attractive in a certain era or area of the world, however, being extremely pale could be an attractive feature to have. This process interestingly affects the person and makes them do exactly what society wants them to do. Whether it s an unconscious or a conscious decision. However, smiling while frowning is more or less fake and it exhibits the feeling of being embarrassed. Finally, conversations between friends and families are more casual. In this case, people are relaxed. They may not keep eye contact all the time but they prefer to use their multi facial expressions to express plentiful emotions. For instance, smile, laugh and grin are three popular expressions in casual conversation, they look like the same but they do vary. The corners of mouth curve up present a smile. No doubt, many dancers all over the world had been greatly inspired by Michael as with the many singers and musicians. E.g. Moonwalk, Circle slide, Pelvic Thrust, The Spin 3. A contract is very clear and concise, regarding its components and requirements. Hence, it includes an offer, acceptance (by both parties), and consideration. There was an intent by Jenny to buy the car, I am interested in buying your car , followed by consideration which shows a reliance on the owner selling it for $23,000. The offeree allegedly agreed to this offer by his performance for the promise made, I will take the car off Sometree. I am really excited for you to buy this car , eventhough Jenny was only interested . Thus, a clear miscommunication in words is present, not resulting in a binding contract in which Jenny is bound by. This assures that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The dialogue between the parties suggests its conditional nature; the fulfilment of said conditions would lead to a binding contract. The nature of a conditional offer is also evident in the Financings Ltd v Stimpson 1962 case, where the Defendant in the case, refused to pay charges against the appellant. Consequently, the plaintiff sued him for breach of purchase agreement. It was held that the Defendants offer was subject to the agreement, that the condition of the car should continue in its undamaged state and that the failure of the condition would deem the contract non binding. Hence, this case relates with Jenny s circumstances, in which there is a breach of conditional contract, which should be legally rectified. It is also apparent that the decision of revocation is apparent from one of the parties. Thus, revocation is legal and effective only when it has been communicated to the offeree. Henceforth, the issue is that the owner of the car has not effectively communicated this to the other party, only until after both parties accepted the offer. Therefore, the owner of the red sports car does not have grounds for revocation. Similarly, this was upheld in the Stephenson Jaques Co. v McLean (1880) case. The judges decided that McLean was authorised to revoke the offer before Monday concluded, which was not effective until it reached the plaintiffs, Lush J charged the defendant the amount of £1900, which was to be paid to the plaintiff s . ... • 49. Imagination In The Mark On The Wall, By W. B. Yeats After losing considerably in the war, people had to begin to decide for themselves what was important. Their identity had been marred by reality and the only way to fix this was to shed their old priorities and construct new ones. Among these priorities were: creativity, originality, and possibility. Imagination is simple because one can access it from anywhere. For this reason, authors utilize it often. This is evident in Virginia Woolf s, The Mark on the Wall and W. B. Yeats s, Sailing to Byzantium. Woolf s narrator claims, I can think sitting still as well as standing up which is only made possible by imagination (Woolf 2148). Similarly, Critics writing on [Yeats s] poem have perceived Byzantium as, variously, a representation of the imagination, the imaginative act, the soul, the vision, and Unity of Being (Pruitt 225). Of course this Byzantium Yeats references is only one in the mind slightly based off of memory. This corresponds with Woolf s work and how she uses memory as a beginning point and, therefore...in remembering the event the narrator is transported back to the scene so that it seems to her to be happening in the present, or happening over and over (Cyr 199). Likewise, in Sailing to Byzantium the reader is invited, to contemplate such an ideal location, projecting it over the past, present, and what is to come as if it too, is out of the reach of time because it is constantly occurring in the imagination (Tucker 68). • 50. Benefits And Backlashes Of High Stakes Testing The Benefits and Backlashes of High Stakes Testing What if the determining factor of whether or not you would be successful or a failure in life was solely based on the results of one test. Regardless of all the progress you have accomplished over your life, it all comes down to this big moment, the big test! That is the reality many students face annually due to high stakes testing. High stakes testing is the use of a summative test or an assessment to make decisions that are of prominent educational, financial, or social impact (Kubiszyn Borich, 2013). Decisions such as graduation/grade promotion, school/state funding, or even job placement or termination. Many critics of high stakes testing believe that these test cause teachers to teach to the test. Pedulla, Abrams, Madaus, Russell, Ramos, and Miao (as cited in Madaus Russell, 2010) found in a national survey that 80 percent of teachers admitted to increasing time spent on subjects that are tested on. These critics also believe that test scores increase as a result of placing sole focus on the test and revolving curriculum and instruction around the specific high stakes test of that school. I do not agree completely agree with the statement that test scores increase as a result of teachers teaching to the test. It is unfair to say that since the vast majority of teachers are teaching to the test, that all other teachers are also doing the same. Sometimes increased test scores are a direct result of the hard work of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
